Authentication Error - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Is anyone getting an authentication error displayed on access points? I get this random on my work/home access point and yes I am close to the access point. I dont think it started doing this until the 4.1.2 update.

Did you try "forget" on your connections and then recreate them?

Yup, I deleted all and its fixed for a few hours. If I turn wifi off and back on it fix's it for a little while. Its random, but it looks like the S3 and the Note 2 have the issue. I googled it and found other people with the same issues.

Very odd. I'm assuming you're running stock and not a bleeding edge custom rom. Is this any ap, or just one or 2? Ones you control?
I really don't know enough about the spectrums and noise congestion, but if they're ones you can control, use a wifi app that'll show you all the aps and channels in your area. That should help you find a less congested one.
Until someone more knowledgeable chimes in, all I have are ideas. :/

Same problem
Yea this is really weird. I have a ASUS RT-N66U router with a 2.4 ghz band and a 5ghz band as well as a second router being used as an access point. I have a fairly large house and my first router didn't quite reach some spots. So at first I had the SSID the same for both routers. I was having problems with the setup so I changed the SSID of the access point router and all was well for a couple of weeks. then all of the sudden the RT-N66U router started giving me the Authentication error. So I have tried everything including giving the 5ghz band a diffrent SSID and that worked for the 5ght band. I can access the 5ghz band but still get the authentication error with the 2.4ghz band.

Getting this problem too.

I have the identical problem as well with the same router and the same phone.

I got this error as well on my RT-N66U and S3. So, is this a Samsung and ASUS issue?
I haven't seen this issue with other phones connecting to my N66U.

I've had this issue as well. Although I am using a belkin router.
I tried the forget this network and still had the issue come up occasionally. I reset my modem and router and haven't had the problem since.

using 2 routers in the same house is always asking for connection troubles, even if you have one of them set as "access points"; I have a netgear router, and a netgear access point in my large house, and they work just fine; I have set up the access point with a different network name than the actual router, and, when I am in the part of my house, or outside, which is closer to the access point location, I just switch wifi networks on my phone/tablet to the "other" network, and it connects just fine....

Ive gotten it randomly also...

Wow...same router (RT-N66U), same phone, same problem...!
Although for me it only happens on 5Ghz...I have the strange feeling that this will remain a mystery...!
EDIT: Got sick of this. I've scanned for other 5Ghz networks in my area in there were just 2, very low reception from where I am. Removed WPA2 and now running open with wifi mac filtering. Voila.

Got same router with note 2 and note 8 on 5 ghz. 2.4 is not an option(exceopt for poor chromecast) as it is flooded with 20 other APs. Only 1 other 5 GHz AP around on different channel with very weak signal. Note 2 is pretty good about staying conencted but somedays note 8 just will not play nice and have to switch to 2.4 GHz SSID. see new FW for outer release 9/11. Will try when i get home.

it must be your router.

no problems here...
I was running it with the following:
SSID broadcast off
WPA2 Personal
Mac filtering
I turned SSID broadcast back on and it works fine now, someone else want to replicate those settings and see if they have problems?

I am having problems connecting to my wireless router, my Evo is saying I have a "poor signal" at my computer desk but my computer is showing me at 100% signal. I think its a Evo software thing but thats my 2 cents. I don't use my wifi often with my phone any way so no biggie for now.
I also have ssid broadcast off and I cant get it working.

Hi everybody, So far I love the EVO even without 4g. Anyway after I turned on my ssid I connected okay. I can see the market and find what I want to download. It says downloading but never does. I have downloaded apps with the 3g but I don't have a signal at my home. I always used winmo before and had no problems downloading on my home network. I wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to what I might be missing. I got root okay and have been having a blast but I sure would like to download some more apps while I am at home. Thanks, Rick
SSID broadcast off and no issues for me thus far.
Yes, me too. Sort of.
My Evo shows 1 bar of wifi signal strength at a distance of 8 feet from the router where my iphone shows full bars. I do get decent download speeds using xspeedlabs free but the upload speed seems to cap at 750kbs where the iphone goes over 1mbs with the same test. There is definitely something weird going on.

I am having similar results as far as signal strength. Sitting 2 feet away from my router I am only showing one bar of signal strength and getting very slow speeds. All of my other wifi devices (including those that are on the opposite side of the house and downstairs) are getting signals ranging from "good" to "excellent". Something definitely seems to be up with the wifi.....

I was having wifi issues too. I'm running dd-wrt on my router. Turns out just power cycling the router fixed it. I think I'm going to setup my router to reset weekly.
I get the same issue of having 1 bar of signal strength, regardless of how close I am... even tried on 2 different wireless routers, Linksys-dual band N, and Net gear A/B/G.
I get strong signal from both routers on all other devices, iPhone, iTouch, Touch Pro, Laptops, etc...
I've played with all the settings on the EVO, turning off the mobile data and only having wifi on, changing the encryption settings on the routers... nothing seems to work.
I love the phone, but kinda bummed about this issue.
I have ssid broadcasting turned off and I'm using WPA 2 with no problems.
There is a long, angry thread about this over at HTC's own EVO forum: http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/android/f/94/t/2929.aspx
I'm also getting less Wi-Fi performance on the EVO than on other devices in the house.
Using Fresh 1.0.1 rom and also the new Cyanogen rom, with the SSID off, I cannot connect with WiFi, with SSID on, it works fine. Using Cisco/Linksys e2000 router.
Tested with my iPhone with SSID off, it connects no problem. So the problem is not my router.
Is this limitation of EVO?

Won't connect to Cisco E4200 router with N only G!

Hi,
Just received my Galaxy Nexus earlier today and have been battling to have it attempt a connection to my WiFi router at home, it'll have a go at the neighbours routers but just says 'saved' on mine and never connects or fails regardless of password given or settings used.
Well - I just found the issue, if I set the E4200 to 'G' mode the phone connects perfectly, but it WILL NOT connect to the router set to 'N' speeds on 2.4 or 5GHz using 20 or 40 MHz channel width.
Anyone found there are potential issues with this phone and 'N' routers? I should mention I've tried 3 different kernels (stock, modaco and franco) and 3 different ROM's (4.0.1 stock, 4.0.2 Revolution HD and 4.0.3 build in the dev section) and all exhibit the same issue. Have not changed baseband as I'm using a 'T' model and want to keep my I9250TDVKK6 modem - this is probably where the problem is anyway.
Anyone else having similar or found a workaround or solution? Thanks!
Hi,
have you tried settings the MHZ band on auto or anything besides just 20mhz band? not many devices like this channel, I'm not having any trouble on the Aerohive system at work or other Netgear at home.
Thanks for the thought! 20 is standard but I've tried every setting - it will connect on 2.4GHz using 'G' fixed speed/protocol or 5GHz only using 'A', neither works at all on 'N' on any channel, width or security
It is bizarre, it's like the phone decides it won't try and says "saved" on the profile once the password is put in when its on "N" there is no connecting, authenticating or getting an IP feedback at all, it does nothing really. If I choose another working AP after trying an "N" one the "N" one says 'disabled'.
My SGS2 worked flawlessly and without complaint previously on any "N" or otherwise setting.
I have the same model router, and it is working for me. I have both the 2.4 and 5 ghz set to mixed network mode. Channel width set to auto, and security/encryption matching on both frequencies. On the Nexus, I have the 5 ghz specified in Wifi settings.

I have this model and connect via the 5ghz connection with no problems.
Same with E3000 with DD-WRT and Virginmedia Superhub
I've been suffering with this problem for a while now. I bought mine on the 19th Nov and tried it out in pure 5 Ghz mode almost straight away and was very impressed with the throughput from my 50Mb Virginmedia cable connection (40+Mb/s with Speedtest.net app).
All was well until I suddenly couldn't connect. It said the SSID was saved and the signal was excellent but tapping "connect" did nothing. I presumed my phone was acting a little screwy so did a had reset (stock unrooted 4.01F YAKU) and tried again but still suffered the same problem.
I started to suspect it could be a channel issue as the GN only supports a handful of 5Ghz channels, so set them accordingly in DD-WRT on my E3000...same result.
To rule out the router, I activated the 5Ghz wireless on my Virginmedia Superhub and what do you think happened?? Exactly the same as before. Everytime I tapped connect, there was no evidence of and attempt to connect to the network. I then tried the 5Ghz SSID on the E3000 and got the same result with the Superhub one dropping back to "disabled" as the OP noticed.
I'm trying to recall if the problem occured before or after the volume fix OTA but I can't really remember to be honest. I'm sterting to think that the handset is faulty as only a couple of people seem to be suffering with this issue...
---------- Post added at 09:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:38 PM ----------
I Googled the issue again and discovered a post on Androids bug posting forum which seems to indicate it's a hardware fault:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23296
I think a trip back to Phones4U is in order for an exchange.
It's happened again!!
I have the same problem with the replacement handset as before. I had just been using 5Ghz, disconnected and when I tried to reconnect, it just sat there as if I hadn't selected "Connect". I've been looking around on various forums and I'm inclined to think that they just die after a while as there arer many other posts similar to this with lots of people trying saying the same as I (and the OP did). Mine has been fine for over 2 months and suddenly has ceased to work...Looks like a warranty replacement this time as P4U were kind enough to replace the handset in-store even though I was out of the 30 day exchange period as I had shown them this forum post indicating it was a known problem that other users were suffering...Technology always fails me in the end
..
Wi-Fi on the GN is horribly broken—you just need to accept it until the Android developers get their heads out their *sses and fix it. Using our Cisco enterprise-class access points, the GN cannot connect at 5GHz—though every other Wi-Fi device that supports 5GHz can. That said though, the GN CAN do 11n over 2.4GHz. Go into Settings, Wireless and Networks, Wi-Fi and tap on your SSID. This should show you your link speed and 72Mbps is as good as you’re going to get with a 20MHz channel and the GN hardware—mine shows 65Mbps and this is an 11n speed, albeit a slower one. From the configuration of our enterprise-class access points, 11g covers “6.0, 9.0, 12.0, 18.0, 24.0, 36.0, 48.0 and 54.0”—whereas 11n covers “m0-m15” (MCS index). The GN only supports m0-m7 and, currently, my GN is connecting at m6.
Hope this helps! At least a little.

[Q] Really low speeds on wifi

When I try to use my wifi connection at home its really really slow. Sometimes it just loads part of the websites or some other it doesnt load at all and I have to refresh it several times so it loads. I also have an iphone and a laptop which dont have this problem at all. Theyre working perfectly fine with my wifi connection.
This only happens with wifi, on 3g it works fine. I havent been able to try more wifi networks to see if this only happens with mine

It also could be a WiFi issue. I was having WiFi issues with my GNex also that I thought was the phone until I started tweaking my Router settings. Some devices are more forgiving to certain routers. In addition some devices Roam to different AP's much better than others.
I have 2 WiFi AP's in my house to span covereage across 2900sqft. I found that my WiFi was just conflicting with each other causing issues with speed and connection so this is what I did.
My Modem is a TWC Wireless Modem - WiFi turned off.
Router 1 Linksys E4200 is Bridged to TWC Modem it is dual band so I have the 5ghz band set MyHomeAP in mixed mode with a 40Mhz Spread, using 36 as the Channel. The 2.4Ghz band is set to MyHomeAP-N in N only mode with a 40mhz Spread and 11 as the channel. I need a seperate SSID here because it was causing conflicts and I needed a 2.4ghz connection upstairs for my Transformer Prime Tab since it does not support 5ghz radios.
Router 2 Netgear WNR300L with DD-WRT loaded is downstairs on the other side of the house. It is a 2.4 ghz router which I have set to MyHomeAP with a 20mhz spread set to channel 1. This allows my devices that are 5ghz compatible to Roam between each AP without conflicts.
So with all that I am now getting 45 mbs WiFi when I am upstairs and connected to the Linksys and 21 mbps downstairs when I am connected to the Netgear downstairs. The Tab is getting a consistent 15mbps on each router which is acceptable for me. This is an improvement from getting 3mbps anywhere in the else regardless of the closeness to the router or the device being used. I'm now able to maximizesmy use of the WideBand service which gets about 52 mbps on a wired connection most of the time.
The GN has lots of issues with different network gear and a lot of it can't be solved by tweaking. Seems like I've heard the most success stories with netgear. I'm using ubee and trendnet and my wifi isn't great. I get between 5 and 20 mbps and its choppy with a lot of disconnects.

You always have to be careful using multiple Wireless routers in the house, because if they are not setup right you will get consistent disconnects and low speeds. Same thing was happening to me until I really digged in and configured my multiple routers correctly. Check my previous post on how I solved my router issues.

Just one router, the time warner ubee docsis 3.0 modem/router. The rest are trendnet APs at 1,6,11. All with same ssid and security. No interference as checked with wifi analyzer. The wifi just sucks. Not much more you can say except try different gear which shouldn't be necessary. All of my laptops etc work great.

[Q] Strange WiFi connection issue

This is a strange issue that I have not seen before. I was starting to have issues with my phone connecting to the wifi at the house. I decided to flash a clean rom today and hopefully that would fix the issue. I did a clean install and now my phone will only connect to the 5G band and not the 2.4GHz wifi band. I would like to connect to the 2.4ghz band but I get a message saying authentication error. I removed the connection and connected using the wps push button but when i do this it only sees the 5G. Any ideas what is going on and how I can correct it?
Do you see the same issue on the stock build ??
You are running what rom ??
Try the rooted stock build as a test. ..and if no change. ..reset the router and set up the connection on the device again. ..g
Have you tried turning off the power saver?
I suspect your router as the culprit but you can try going into the advance menu.
Hit *#0011#* hit menu then wifi menu.
I think you may even be able to choose the band? I think you can choose auto or manually pick 2.4 or 5ghz. Either way see if shutting off the power saver helps.

That is strange usally its the other way around...I have my dual band set up similar to yours..I named the 2.4 actually 2.4 and 5.0 same password..sometimes ill have to hit scan to show the 5ghz band...sounds stuiped..but make sure you click show password and make sure your entering rhe correct one..it may be so simple you may entered wrong password...or try changing the channel on the 2.4 ghz in rhe router setring to a different channel..mybe be a conflict..change it to channel 11..and reboot the router. ..
I have tried it on a stock rooted rom as well as CleanRom 3. Does the same. I have not tried a CM based rom to see if it only does it with the TW based rom's. I have checked the router and I don't see anything there that should cause the problem. I have 4 other android phones, and android tablet, and 1 iphone in the household and none of the others are having this issue. I have also noticed that it doesn't always say authentication error. Sometimes it says out of range even though I can be standing right beside the router. I am stumped.

Did you ever solve this? I'm having similar problem with my Note 2. I have a strong wifi signal incoming to the phone, but the transmission signal is very weak (verified using dd-wrt on the router and looking at client signal strength). My Note 2 has extremely poor strength.. ~10% where every other device on my network is ~50%. I've tried factory reset, turning off wifi power save mode.. not sure what else to try.
I am having a similar problem for the past couple months. My Note2 (ATT) with custom ROM won't connect to a 2.4 GHz wifi. No problem connecting to 5GHz wifi.
I saw an answer to this for a Sony Experia that the problem is with 802.11 mode and to change a file option gDotMode from 3 to either 1 or 2, but I haven't found a file with that option in it yet.
Same problem here, no 2.4 authentication unless the phone is very close to 2.4GHz AP.
Same problem here, no 2.4 authentication unless the phone is very close to 2.4GHz AP.
I have noticed that in some public networks i can connect with no trouble, (I guess now that they're 5.8GHz)
but not at home

Galaxy Watch messing up my 2.4Ghz wifi network

Hello,
Ever since I've bought my Galaxy Watch non LTE 46mm, I've been having issues at home with the 2.4Ghz wifi network on all devices. Speeds won't go more than 18-20mbps, while on the 5Ghz I reach 350-400mbps.
My router is having these 2.4Ghz settings:
Channel 6, channel width 20mhz, mode 802.11b/g/n
All my devices: tablets, phones show the same behavior: very weak wifi speed on this freq.
Even my watch drops the BT connection to my phone in a matter of 3 meters from it, like from the couch to the desk.
I remember before having the watch that on 2.4Ghz I always got between 60-80mbps no matter the device used.
Have you rebooted your router recently? I've found that helps speeds sometimes.

Yep. I guess the only thing I can do is to try and mess with the wifi channels
That's a good idea. Maybe get an app to see channel usage around you to see what's open. A neighbor may have added things. Maybe change the PW on your router in case someone is piggybacking off it?

Well, my wifi is mac filter based, so no chance of someone from outside getting on. I have tried now with the watch turned off, speedtest returned 50mbps on my phone and 68 on my ipad. Once I turned the watch on and it connected to my phone, both devices fell to 17-19mbps.
Hi, may it be too bad reception with the clock because it is too far from your router? Is it the same problem if you put the clock near your router?

It's not about the wifi connection of my watch. It's about the fact that when the watch is connected to my phone via bluetooth, all my other devices including the phone, are having bad wifi speeds on 2.4ghz. When I turn the watch off, everything gets back to normal.
It sure sounds like an IP conflict on the network.
