[Q] Few Questions to prepare Evo 4g for flashing - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello people, I tried doing minor research and I got overwhelmed with all the information available that I have no idea where to begin. If you guys can point me in the order I need to read things so I can flash my phone to the MikG rom or a better rom that would be great. A little background on my phone, I have an evo 4g, the charger port doesn't work, I had a guy help me set it up to boost mobile. So far its running great but I want to try putting some newer features onto my phone and make it run better. I hear a custom rom is the way to go.
Software Information
Android Verions: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.05.02
Kernel Version: [email protected] #1--Fri Apr 8 12:20:26 CST 2011
Build Number: 4.12.651.1 CL41771 release-keys
Browser Version: Webkit/533.1
Any help in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks.
EDIT: Continued reading along and was able to find all the answers I needed. Mods please delete this post. Thanks. ^_^

What is the best rooted 2.2 upgrade for me?
Where can I go to find out what all the above means as well as odex and deodex?
Thanks,

Please search
check the wiki to point you to various roms and their threads, and read through the threads it links you to (or Neifs grid in the wiki, but i don't think its done yet) - it's all about personal choice, you'll have to try them all to find the one that you like best/works best for your phone. I wouldn't worry to much about all of the specs you posted, none of it comes into play for most people.
odex and deodex come into play if you plan on theming your phone. Generally you can only theme deodexed roms.
Sorry, but what is wiki or Neif's grid in the wiki?

OK - I'm going to try and be nice and help you out, but you're not really giving me much to work with here. Don't take this the wrong way, but if you don't know what a wiki is (or at the very least, know to type wiki into google to find a definition) you really don't belong here, and you will most likely brick your phone (which means turning it into a paperweight), because you don't know what your doing. You may want to just stick with what you have.
At the top of the Q&A section (this one, the one you posted this question in) is a thread called "HTC EVO Wiki".
A wiki ( /ˈwɪki/ WIK-ee) is a collaborative Web site oriented to providing knowledge in some domain. Anyone can enter information, or change or comment on anyone else's contributions.
So you go to a wiki to find and get information (ever hear of wikipedia?) Neif is a member here who is putting together a grid of the various rom capabilities - that grid is housed in the wiki.
PLEASE, do some reading, do some searching, and read the stickies in each section (stickies are the threads that are "stuck" at the top of each section) before you go any further.
Thanks for being kind and helping me out. I know what wikipedia is, but didn't understand the concept of a wiki. Everybody has got to start somewhere, and I've learned a lot from you guys especially timothydonohue in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746408
Its nice to have a little direction when trying something new.
The only dumb question is the one not asked...
Thankyou

[Q] How to update everything?

i did some searching and I wasn't quite able to either understand how or find the info I was searching for.
My phone has been rooted for a few months...
I'm pretty sure I need to flash a recovery? Sorry, I'm used to WM6.5
I would also like a new ROM if possible. If someone could just guide on how to do this or give me a link to a guide, that would be VERY helpful.
Info:
Firm: 2.1 update 1
baseband: 1.36.00.04.02
kernel: 2.6.26-ac94cf60
build:1.17.651.1
software: 1.17.651
PRI: 1.34_003
PRL: 60671
q&A please
I believe unrEVOked is the current way to get a custom Recovery & therefore custom ROM working now. Have you taken a look yet?
Use the Latest RUU posted here in the Dev Forum.. then use Unrevoked.. that will update everything.. and re-root you..

[Q] Downgrade from 2.42.405.2

Hi all. Yesterday i updated to gingerbread ... now my "desire z" info says:
Android version: 2.3.3
HTC Sense version: 2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.10-g7b95729
Build number: 2.42.405.2 CL84109 release keys
Software number: 2.42.405.2
Browser version: WebKit/533.1
so as far as i know there isnt any way to downgrade that - is it true?
correct me if im wrong but downgrade for me is needed in case i want to root/s-off my phone and install some new roms (with better look and funcionality) - do i get it right?
i updated my phone just because i thought the senseUI will be updated too but i was a fool - i thought desire Z is a good phone and they will continue to support one of the best touch and type phones...

no one is lynching you, he posted a link that states it cannot be downgraded which confirms your original question: you cannot downgrade yet and are stuck with the 2.42 update for the time being.
If you want root, you shouldn't have accepted the OTA undate. There is a pre-rooted version in the Development section. But you're pretty much hosed, no way to downgrade or root the new update, until somebody figures out a way.
In the future ask questions first and install updates second

Help from fellow Aussie owners [maybe optus specific]

HI all, long story short i have an optus "messed with "gnex that i patiently waited for the 4.04 update to be released on, but now its here and its a buggy POS (thanks optus) so i finally wanna go down the path of returning the phone to standard yakju and bathe in the glory of jelly bean.
ive read a few guides on the different ways to do it so i have a rough idea, ive also read that a few things can make it go wrong and it seems in alot fo cases knowing the details of your phone prior to the conversion is key however nothing seems to match what my phone says namely the kernel/build version.
so what im after is given the details of my phone if someone who knows alot more then me could point out the right method/files to use to match my details that would be ideal, the boot loader is already unlocked and the phone is rooted for what its worth
so its a

any other details can be supplied if needed, just desperate for help from those more knowledgeable

DO NO USE ROM MANAGER ON THIS DEVICE!!
Unless you wish to make an expensive paperweight!
I'm guessing you are new to this phone.
Take some time and read through the stickies in all the sub forums.
Especially the 'How not to brick your phone one.
Seriously, this device is great and the developers in this forum are fantastic. But they cannot keep you from making horrible mistakes by you not taking your time to learn.
Read through the stickies. Read through the popular posts (and when I say read I mean the entire posts and follow-ups).
A few days or weeks of reading and learning and you will surely have a great time with your phone.
Haste and impatience will just end up having you wonder why you are stuck at a blue light special.
Welcome to the E4GT forums. Look, read learn and you will be rewarded.
Good luck.
