[Q] HTC OneX ROM - Data recovery option(s) - HTC One X

Have OneX which I applied Vendor/Supplier ICS/JB update too... resulted in ROM not bootable and only access to fastboot. Device can be sent for warranty but issue is Data Recovery for me (or the wife in this case) so happy to loose any warranty if I can access the Media/Photos etc.
Have run through HTC Dev site to get unlock code, my hope is that I can flash CWM Recovery to then enable mounting of 'SDCard' or media to PC to recover data. At present Fastboot connects to phone via PC and can run any command but ADB does not show any devices. As I've only worked with cooked ROMs on GalaxyS the HTC OneX is new ball park for me.
I have the All-in-one pack... would be interested to know if unlocking alone will allow ADB to work and in turn allow me to 'pull' data from the device? Alternatively I would then be looking to flash CWM to the device as next option...
HBoot is 1.12
Ver-main 2.17.980.6
Any ideas/help/direction to recovery the data is greatly appreciated.

yes you can unlock the bootloader and flash this recovery
http://db.tt/Krlm4dPs
Then enter it, go to mounts & storage - mount as usb mass storage (last option in the list)
What i did was, i enabled the autoupload of pictures to dropbox .....nice feature and maybe something that could help you too

Yeah data = priceless as it's our Baby girls first Xmas phots's etc... have just moved all PCs @ home to Ubuntu so hadn't quite got to figuring out data bakups etc. Warranty is only about another 3or4 months so would happily dismantle the phone if needed... will also get me out of the dog-house with the wife if I get the photo's back.
So the recovery rom in dropbox is CWM or something specific to this HBoot etc?

No its a general custom recovery that can be used on every hboot......and yeah those pictures are indeed priceless !

Champion... any recommendations/links to a good guide to follow once I've been able to get data off the device as the Vendor/Carrier ROM is dead and i'll need to flash a full custom ROM next.

Here is a full guide........detailed questions can be posted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843585

Hi... reading through that guide they've indicated that unlocking bootloader will wipe the phone? Are they meaning that flashing a new ROM will wipe the data... I've not been able to test process yet as phone went flat.

Yes it will wipe the phone to factory state.....don't know for sure if it will wipe sdcard, didn't think of that in the beginning

Any chance I can apply a Custom recovery without unlocking bootloader

If this was a Galaxy wouldn't be an issue as they obviously do something different with the OneX... I've read in places that it's called a /sdcard but the flash used is not that separate and factory reset may or maynot wipe that data? As the ROM is not accessible I can't get to enable usb debug mode and although flashboot responds at present I've never been able to get adb to display the OneX as a device...

Nope !

Can anyone confrim that a 'factory reset' wipes the personal phone data but leaves /sdcard alone?

I've relocked/unlocked the bootloader several times and never lost any data on sdcard.
Maybe adb only works in bootloader only on newer hboot versions? I gotta try on 1.39 when I get home...

Edit: missed the last page again
I really don't know about the factory reset...

Adb in recovery and running os. Fastboot in bootloader

Success... thanks for the help. With CWM recovery was able to get adb working and pull all the media which will save me great pain. Now to get a new ROM loaded... after I had got everything off rebooted the phone now it's sitting @ HBoot: Checking SD Card upate...
Dunno if it thinks it's going to try and apply the update that made the mess in the first place?
Edit: Seems like it just didn't like the USB charging cable being plugged in. Now I just have to figure on how to restore someones backup or find a RUU...

I have pressed the force stop of music player and cleared the data and also clicked force stop on gallery and cleared the data ...all images and vedios and my music is deleted can I recover data pls help me :'(

Wiped SDcard after flashing custom rom = Bricked!

I think I bricked my HOX.
I have custom recovery installed and lots of battery left. I tried to install a new rom (android revolution) and it worked fine, then I noticed that I had lots of left overs on my sd card from earlier installations. So I decided to format it and cleaned /data /system and /cache. The result is that the phone is stuck at "HTC - Quietly brilliant".
Is there anyway possible for me to connect the phone to the usb and transfer the rom files again to flash them?
Or what should I do to have my phone working again.
I have read the guide and I am currently downloading a RUU file, but I prefer not to lock the bootloader > revert to stock > flash rom again.
Please advice,

What is stoping you from booting into recovery, plugging it in via USB and sticking a new ROM on there... Sorry if I'm wrong, don't have the phone yet but seems like what I'd try to do...

When you boot into recovery do you not have an option to toggle USB storage when you plug the phone in via usb?

There is an option under Mounts and storage menu in CWM that allows me to "mount UBS storage" However it is not working and returning an error, "Unable to open ums lunfile (No such file or directory)"
I guess boot into bootloader and then push your desired .zip over...

Oh, well in that case the only reasonable thing would be to also disable the "erase sd-card" feature also, to prevent issues like this
Woaahh just saw your signature, you got a 4s over the SGS II? (I'm guessing) ohh dearrr
why did you format /system? ROFL thats ur problem right there.
Your only options are
a.) wait till recovery is released w/ USB mounting currently there is none.
b.) obtain the correct official HTC RUU (HTC vendor tool) and flash in fastboot. This WILL WORK but you need the exact correct RUU for your specific build
c) use adb push commands
And btw bricked means the phone is completely dead, you can boot but not in rom

Ok, i got this baby running again. Have to say it was real dead at one time too. No battery left and no possibility to charge. Promised myself not to play anymore with it if I bring it back to life again.
However, I read somewere that I could use the iphone charger to get some batterylife to boot it and it sure worked. Left it on and the next day the light was green on the phone. My face went from to
With full battery I downloaded the 1.29 RUU but it still didnt work. Read somewere else agian that I had to relock the phone again to be able to use the RUU. So I did and it sure worked. Brought it back to stock and here I am again with a working phone in my hand.
I couldnt stay away from ARHD so I unlocked the bootload again, flashed it and customized
Must be real real hard to brick this phone completely!

If you used adb then you know more than I do.
The only thing I can think of is if you are full wiping.
Booting into recovery
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe dalvik
Format all partitions except sd card.
I suggested to get 4ext touch becauee you can use the screen to navigate in the recovery section instead of the volume buttons to format and flash.
If you are having hardware issues, could it be a hardware problem? It happebed after you got nervous which leads to believe it may be software related. But if you flashed a stock rom using adb, did that fully wiped your phone? I don't know.
If it didn't, try a full wipe.

It is all software related, well i tried everything but the same...it is not a harware problem. I think the rom that had an error when i was flashing it had a bad impact on my media driver. I don't know how to fix this crap now....please keep posting and keep in touch...and do ask your friends to fix this issue if you could please.

when i was flashing a new ROM through CWM then an error appeared stating installation aborted...I got panic and when this error appeared....i just flashed the other ROM...but i didn't wipe the data of the Error making ROM...I think that is why this problem happened...but new ROM was flashed successfully and when i tried to work volume keys in the ROM and in CWM they were not working, Camera and Earphone slot wasn't working as well....After that i tried 4EXT Recovery to wipe everything and flashed the ROM once again but same problem for every ROM..Even i Recently flashed an RUU Stock HTC ROM VIA ADB but same....Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't help your problem, but if everything is really down and you're back on stock ROM, without root, go and complain to HTC and whatever your service provider is. Pretend like you don't know what happened. If you have a good provider, or if your phone warranty hasn't expired yet, then they should fix it for you.

4. Connect your phone.
5. Open up a windows command prompt and navigate to your sdk tools or platform tools folder. tools (c:\android-sdk-windows\tools) or platform-tools (c:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools) (ore where you have the adb)
6. Type FASTBOOT DEVICES to make sure your computer "sees" your phone and is ready to flash the recovery. You should get a serial number and then the word fastboot as the output.
7. Type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and press enter. Give it a minute to do it's thing. You should get a message that says writing recovery and success.
(you must have the recovery.img on the same place as fastboot)

Replacement Battery, Or broken phone?
Looking to replace this naff ass broken "replacement HTC Desire HD" battery. Any suggestions? Are these High Capacity Gold battierys any use?
This battery if I turn the phone on it then powers off as dead. Unless I have it connected to a charger first. Then I can see the battery is actually got a charge in it.
Is this the battery of perhaps an issue with the phone?

Please help! Too many pattern attempts...

So guys I have HTC One X, it isn't rooted and it's stock...
Yesterday one stupid girl made too many wrong pattern attemps and I was locked out of my phone and now it says sign in to your google account, and I do that but since the wifi was off and my mobile internet is also turned off - I can't unlock my phone even when I'm entering my gmail and password.
Is there a way to turn the wifi on and unlock my phone, I don't wanna do a factory reset because I can't copy all my data from my phone so I don't wanna lose anything.
Thank you so much!

There is a thread that says its possible to make a backup by adb commands ! Don't ask me where the thread exactly is but I've seen it
And what about flashing a custom recovery and make a nandroid backup then you do a factory reset and after that you restore just some parts of the nandroid ..... You can chose in the recovery to just restore data only. So the system where your pattern lock is located will not be touched anymore
Just thinking out loud for a minute
Ok, I would try anything... But how do I install this app if I can't use wifi?
About the adb command thing i dont know much, sorry about that. And i see you are still on stock and not rooted, so you probably also have a locked bootloader ? If you unlock it you might void the warranty of the phone.
Unlocking, flashing custom recovery, doing a backup and a partial restore will probably work the best and it is also the only way to do this. At least as far as i know (if somebody else has a better idea please pitch in )
Marcel.
What happens if you try to connect it via usb?
Doing an adb backup is not an option if OP didn't have usb debugging on.
One way out would be unlocking bootloader like Hofs said, but then your warranty would be gone.
If you don't want to void warranty, it might be a good idea to contact your local HTC repair center and they might salvage your data for a small fee.

CRAP :banghead: completely forgot about that !!! My humble excuses
When you said your data, what kind of data ? Those files on sdcard/HTC Storage ? Or data such as apps that you installed, email settings/passwords
I will make a test with my device later. Now with USB debugging is off, I can still browse my files in recovery mode. (I'm using a PC based explorer to browse). I will install the stock recovery and stock boot.img and let you know
There'a no fastboot back up option just hboot, boot reboot, reboot and shut down. Well data like my pictures and music and stuff that I don't have anywhere else. I don't care about apps and email I can restore that.

No, you need to go into fastboot mode on the phone and then from your pc, use the fastboot tool.

Now, all I can do is get into 'bootloader v0.0.13-ICS: Starting Fastboot USB download protocol'
If i connect to pc, doing adb devices shows no devices..
any ideas? :crying:

Adb commands don't work in fastboot mode, you need fastboot devices instead, so adb devices not working doesn't mean anything. If it did work that's odd though lol. Also, booting in fastboot is the wrong mode anyways, use the other volume key for recovery, for now remove the external sd then boot recovery and report back what happens there.

Ok, removed the usb and external SD.
Do the other boot I get a quick message saying 'erasing cache before sd-update'
Hold on...
While typing this, it's changed..
Before I had the 'droid' then he fell over when '!'... it's done that again, but straight away it's got loads of messages.
E:Can't open /dev/block/mmcblk0p5
(no such file or directory)
that is repeated several time for dif files/directories...
Then it displays the recovery menu.....
reboot,
apply update
wipe data
wipe cache
apply update
1st time it's shown that....
Next step??
Anyone help??
I have the Android system recovery utility...
What now?

You can try wiping but that error is usually a dead or dying emmc.
Also, have some patience, we have lives to live we answer when we can.

lol, sorry... 2nd post wasn't meant as a 'hurry up and fix mine, because i'm more important'.....
I was typing something else in, then i decided that was stupid, so i deleted and put that instead....
my bad...
just as an update, this may seem silly to some but if I don't tell you i'll never know...
The recovery does nothing, so I put it in bootloader mode...
connect up the usb,
then typing 'fastboot reboot' does reboot the device... so maybe other commands will work??
how do i wipe?
and i'm clutching at straws....

Fastboot commands will always work provided drivers are installed and it can boot into fastboot, it doesn't mean you aren't in the process of bricking, just hasn't gone all the way yet. When its final you won't even get a screen that lights up or vibration.
Since you asked though in recovery you can wipe cache but that will likely give errors again. The nuclear option is fastboot erase userdata but that's like massive data destruction, even internal sd I think.
As you're stock, stop now, and get in touch with acer and see if they'll cover it for warranty repair under their 1 year BS coverage.

Please excuse my ignorance to some things.
The tab isn't under warranty, it's 15 months old
It wasn't stock, i had one of the modded roms installed... (but i can't remember which one, I did it last year sometime to swap internal disk for external one to give me more space)..
I'm not worried about anything on the tablet at all as luckily I did a complete system backup on titanium 2 days ago on my external sd.
Cheers

I said stock because you have a stock recovery, though fastboot mode says you rooted and all that at some point. Probably ran a stock based Rom and ended up overwriting recovery which makes this harder to figure out. But its 99% likely its dying.
You can manually flash a recovery in fastboot and try to factory reset there or just do the fastboot command in my last post.

Thanks for all the replies... I'll look round the forums to work out how to flash recovery in fastboot mode, then i'll try the wipe userdata.
If that fails,i'll just wait.... I noticed that the genius's are currently looking at ways to fix the numerous brick problems so maybe in the future there will be a simple solution..
Has there been an actual reason for the brickage... Is is motherboard related?

Read the brick thread for info on it, but short answer is emmc died.

Well, acer support want £55.15 just to post it back to them, then they will call with cost of repair... lol I don't think so somehow..
Luckily I am in a good position at the mo, so i've just purchased a nexus n7...
I'll monitor this site until 1 day maybe one of the genius's on here will find a cheaper cure..
Good luck all...
(i'll be moving to the nexus section now then.. look out overthere.... :silly

[Q] HTC One X keeps turning off after new rom install

Hello all,
I'm having a bit of a problem with my HTC.
Just flashed the Tripnraver CM rom. I flashed the boot.img, then went to CWM, did
a wipe data, format system, then install zip from sd..
After the first boot (welcome, choose your language), I choose my language and then
the phone just turns off without an error message.
When I turn the phone back on, it boots normally (and again with the welcome screen).
Then again I choose my language and I can complete the setup.
Once the setup is complete, it turns off again. When I use my phone for like 5 minutes,
it will also turns off with no reason..
I flashed the correct boot.img provided in the zip.
Also, i searched the forum for people with the similar problem, but I didn't found anything
that could help me.
This is driving me crazy, I can't use my phone normally, it keeps powering off all of the sudden!
Is there someone who can provide me some information or help with this problem?
Thanks in advance!
Are you certain you wiped everything properly? Do the whole process once again and flash this script instead of wiping manually : https://www.dropbox.com/s/mh1mcpe3v2y9c1a/Super wipe script.zip
and also don't forget to fastboot erase cache after flashing the boot.img via fastboot!
Thanks for your quick response!
Gonna try it again and this time with the super wipe.
I'll post again after the progress is complete.
Okay, I flashed the boot.img, then erased cache, did a full wipe with the super wipe u linked.
Phone boots normally (ofcourse first boot takes some time), did the setup (welcome blabla),
the phone didn't went off 1 time! I guess I didn't wiped the correct way.
As far of now, my phone works normally. I waited for like 15 minutes before I made a post, because
maby the problem wasn't solved.
Thanks mate, I really appreciate it! +1
**edit** Actually I still don't know what I did wrong. You think the problem was because of the ''not correct wipe''?
Dammit, it's back again.. It turns off again.. for no reason.
This is driving me crazy ...
Do you (or others) got some more tips?
Aarrghhh!! Dammit! No idea why's this happening...
try to flash a different rom and see whether it's happening or not? Repeat the same steps to flash the new rom... (even the boot.img)
Thanks again for your reply.
I flashed another rom ( RD MIUI this time), same routine, flash boot.img, erase cache, in CWM super wipe,
then install zip from sd card. Then my phone boots into the welcome screen, and AGAIN it turns off..
I really want to throw my phone out of the windows right now..
I've not seen this problem on XDA forums so far, so i think no one can help me with this one ?
I'm beginning to think it's a hardware problem now!
Post the result of fastboot getvar version-main Will find a RUU or a nandroid backup for your device...
This would be the last thing that I could help you with... Go back to stock and see whether problem persists... if so, send it to HTC for warranty!
Alright.. thats sad to hear.. ..
My version is 3.14.401.31.
I think I can't bring it to HTC because I unlocked my bootloader so my warranty is void.

Download this RUU: http://bugsylawson.com/files/file/1...-r-radio-5120416229-release-302015-signedexe/
lock your bootloader: fastboot oem lock
Run the ruu on PC with admin privileges! It will take you back to full stock... Now see whether the problem persists or not!
Ig it still does, send it to HTC... Yeah, unlocked bootloader might void your warranty, but I don't think there's anything that you can do to solve it by yourself...

Actually the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I used the wipe script as suggested by @vin4yak and followed exactly as he has instructed all to no avail. Then tried something slightly different, i used the wipe script for cache, data and system but I used the PC to format the sdcard and my Hox is fine now. Don't know why it worked but it did. Format sdcard as fat32 but change allocation size to 32 in the drop down, it should be 16 as default
Bite me
I feel your pain.
I've had this issue for quite some time.
My Phone went to HTC early on for the WIFI issue, I mentioned the rebooting issue and they said there was no issue. It's a real pain as sometimes it will go away for a few days and then return. it happens when it's freshly wiped and installed, it happens when the phone has been in use for months.
Does your Front facing crash when apps try to use it. If I use ANY rom that isn't based directly from the 4.2.2 sense ROM it goes weird.
I have flashed all manner of ROMs to try and solve it. I will post here if I find anything.
it's such a shame but I won't be buying another HTC anytime soon, HTC Desire/HD/Sensation/One X all have had really severe issues. My wife had a Galaxy S2 and now a Sony Z1. I'm thinking I get a Sony Z2 and be done with the issues.
