No, flash ROM from custom recovery first, then the boot.img from fastboot. Use a custom, not stock, recovery (CWM, 4ext, or TWRP).

I have no idea what you're trying to say. What recoveries have you tried to flash? How have you tried to flash them? How are you trying to flash the ROM? What is "cyan," ClockworkMod (CWM) or CyanogenMod (CM)? What is a "stock recovery .boot img"? You can't flash anything from the stock recovery. You can't flash the stock ROM's boot.img with a custom ROM. Recoveries do not have boot.imgs that you need to worry about. I am saying that you need to have a custom recovery, like CWM, 4ext, or TWRP, installed. You do that through "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img." You then need to download a ROM zip, boot into recovery with power and volume-down, factory reset, and install the ROM. You then need to extract the boot.img from the ROM zip you just flashed and flash it from the computer with "fastboot flash boot boot.img."

yes flashing a rom for the one xl is the same as flashing a rom which is intended for a samsung or sony phone, it's a completely different phone so won't work!
firstly you need a different recovery, get philz touch recovery and flash it, that will solve the touchscreen problem.
Now do a full wipe from recovery, data, system, cache and sdcard.
load another rom onto sdcard.
flash the boot.img from the rom and then do the command "fastboot erase cache". This is very important and may possibly be why magio wouldn't boot
now flash the rom and enjoy.

Now your device restored 4.1.1 rom ? If so flash Philz_Touch recovery then install the OTA.zip via recovery, after that flash boot.img from OTA, then fastboot erase cache > reboot.

Enough said. You need stock recovery to do OTA.
Try to locate OTA file and flash it manually

You won't lose root if you have stock recovery.
Do you even have a stock recovery? If so, just place it inside the adb folder, open the command prompt change directory to adb folder, boot into bootloader mode and type fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img The same way you probably got custom recovery onto the device.
Won't lose root because of stock recovery. You'll lose root because of the OTA though, but even then it's easy enough to regain root. You can then either flash back the custom recovery OR boot the custom recovery. I'd suggesting booting the custom recovery that way you can make a nandroid backup of the updated system before you flash anything again.
fastboot boot custom_recovery_name.img If you're using TWRP then it probably won't make a backup of the stock recovery, CWM/Philz will work better for the nandroid. After you made a backup(If you choose to make a backup, again strongly suggested) then you can flash a custom recovery again.
Was it really necessary to post in a massive font?

[Q] Stock Recovery 4.18.401.3 or 4.18.401.2

I'm attempting another go on getting back to stock on my HOX.
I'm looking for the stock recovery 4.18.401.2.
I've found a lin k in a earlier thread, but there I can only find the 4.18.401.3.
Does this matter? Can I use that one?
Am I correct, when restoring a nandroid back up, that I first need tot flash the recovery.img (and the boot.img) from the nandroid back-up, and after I restored the backup, flash the stock recovery?
Any 4.18 recovery will do. And yes, to restore a nandroid, flash the recovery that it's inside the backup folder, flash the boot.img, and restore from recovery the nandroid backup. Then u can flash the stock 4.18 recovery to go 100% stock.
Sent from my HTC One X
So I installed the nandroid back up, after flashing the boot and recovery from the backup.
After that I flashed the stock recovery, but just no luck.
When I boot into recovery I get the custom recovery.
Also when installing the OTA ..401.04 update, it failes and returns to the custom recovery.
After the backup and flashing the recovery, I did not flash the stock boot.img.
Is that the problem?
Then you either flashed the wrong recovery, or you didn't flash it correct.
Flash this one

Recovery

I for some reason can't get the stock recovery to flash the root file or any stock firmware. Also I can't get it to change recoveries for some reason I've tried in terminal with a few different ones and tried flashing the stock one also but it won't change. Does anything know how to fix this? Is there a back to stock thing I can flash it? I've been searching for days with no luck. Thanks

You have to flash the latest stock recovery! They patched the stock recovery and hashed for that!
Flash a custom recovery and make a nandroid backup. Save your backup for security reasons to your pc then install coloros completely new from 1.2.1and only update it with ota to 1.2.4 . Now use fastboot to boot from a custom recovery like Philz.(fastboot boot recovery.img)
Recovery.img should be replaced with the name of your recovery. Twrp won't work for this plan!, cause it don't backs up the recovery. Now make again a backup. Save the recovery.img from backup safely. Now restore your old backup and flash the captured stock recovery. Tada now your ota update should work fine!
Cheers
got it thanks a lot!! got root and that custom recovery worked! thanks again!!
