[Q] Fail to flash any rom in my Note 2 sgh i317 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello guys,
It's my first question to the forum. I hope you can give me a clue resolve this problem.
I bought a Note 2 SGH i317 some days ago.
It was my first root but with your trheads everything was ok (for some days).
I tried JediX, Custom Rom 4.2.5 and some other.
But after tried some custom roms, I noted that when I flash any rom the phone stucks on Samsung Galaxy Note II screen and I have to pull out the battery to turn off the phone.
I tried with many others roms and all did the same.
Later I realized that the flash process was very fast compared to the first ones, so I guess the flash proccess fails in some instance.
I returned to stock rom and root it again with same results.
I tried with CVM and TWRP.
I can restore some nandroid backups to get the phone working, but can't flash any rom now!
Do you have any suggestion?
Thanks in advance.

Did you wipe the data/wipe the cache partition and clear the dalvik cache? I would start with those things.

Hi.
Yes. I did every step.
Sometimes I wipe both before and after flashing rom.
In some cases I format /system also.
I'm thinking in format some special partition/folder, but I don't know where to start or if it will works...

I rooted it via Odin using Galaxy Note 2 Toolkit form here:

with my specific tar file.

Not sure what went wrong. I would search through the forums for anything similar to the issue that you're having. If all else fails I'd flash the stock firmware via Odin. Good luck!

Yes it is. You can find the stock here.
http://galaxynote2root.com/galaxy-note-2-stock-firmwares/

If flashing stock rom doesn't help, your internal memory might be corrupted, and might need to format it through recovery.
It's not a sure thing but it's another option to troubleshoot your problem. If you're gonna try that, make sure to backup all your stuff

I think that something like that is the real problem.
Must I format /storage/sdcard0 or format everything except my external card?
By the way, how can the internal memory becames corrupt?

It's hard to say what made it corrupt (if at all, remember, this is only an assumption). Could've been an app that caused it, could've been flashing a custom rom, and something went wrong during the flashing process.
If you're using twrp (which i highly suggest you do), in the 'wipe' menu there's an option to wipe internal sd. DON'T FORGET! before you do this make a nandroid backup and keep that backup on your external sd, or on your computer. Also, backup all your stuff, like pictures, music, etc.

How long do you usually wait at the samsung logo?

I'll try.
I'm using CWM right now, because I thought that TWRP could be part of the problem.
I have two backups with CWM and two with TWRP, An one complete with Titanium also!

The only thanks you could give is just hitting the thanks button on my answers to you. But you don't really have to, it's entirely up to you. If you think my responses are helpful to you, then by all means ... In order to close a thread you could ask a moderator to do so. I'm not sure you're obligated to do so.
Btw, if cwm gives you an md5 error, could be most likely because you changed the name cwm has originally assigned to that backup. To solve this, just change it to what it was. If you didn't change the backup name, you could try going into advanced menu in cwm and toggle signature check to disable

[Q] Cant Restore My Phone

Hello.
I want to restore my friends galaxy s2 (t989), but no matter what I do it will not restore. I tried odin and I tried flashing a different rom through cwm recovery, but everytime i boot it up after restoring it stays the same way. Meaning that all of the app, settings, photos, etc remain on the phone. As if I didnt even try to restore it. I am guessing it is a virus but I dont know how to remove it Another hint that it is a virus, every time i remove or install a new app from the play store, when I reboot the changes are un-done, meaning that the apps that I removed come back, and the apps that I installed are gone. It is almost as if it is stuck on a state and keeps reverting to it after every reboot. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks
Try doing a factory reset in the phone settings then go into recovery and wipe as if u are about to flash another ROM. Manually put the phone into download mode and try to restore from there

In recovery go to mount and storage section. Then format data, system, and cache. Then factory data reset. This will fix it. The same way you format a sd card and it wipes it clean thats what happens when you format data, system, and cache.

Thank you guys for answering, I tried both methods but neither worked. After some more research I found out what is causing this to happen. Apparently the internal memory of the phone is stuck as read only, I don't know how he did that. While I am searching for a way to make is read and write, I came across this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025475 but it is for the skyrocket and there was no solution. However, I also came across this http://androidforums.com/incredible-support-troubleshooting/347685-internal-phone-storage-becomes-read-only.html for the HTC Incredible, but to be honest I have no idea what he did and whether or not it will work on this phone. Do you guys have any idea how make the internal memory of his phone read and write instead of read only? Any help is appreciated thank you.

Flash new rom then go back into recovery and format everything and reset. some recoveries have mount system options so maybe find another one. Something is definitely weird going on. Root explorer, Root toolbox, and other apps have option to mount system as rw as well like biglil said

Im bad at explaining stuff so let me try explaining it a different way.
Like I said, I want to change the rom on my friends phone. I have a fair amount of experience in doing this since I also have an s2 running jedi knight 6. As usual, I would reboot into recovery, wipe system/factory reset, wipe cache/dalvik then install rom. This is where it gets weird, after I boot up the phone, it goes back to the way it was, as if I did not wipe anything. I even tried flashing a completely different rom and I even tried restoring it back to stock rom through ODIN nothing happens. Also, the mount toggle in root explorer is only for the root system, not the internel memory of the phone. Thanks for the help though.
Ok use titanium backup. Two options guaranteed to work. Find the wipe all system and data option use that. If that doesn't work find unintegrate system dalvik option and use that. One these should definitely work.

[Q] Having problems upgrading roms

Any time I try to flash a rom or anything I keep getting this message: E:/error opening '/data/lost+found'
I've tried flashing different roms but it hasn't helped.
I'm having this weird problem where when I flash a new rom about 20 random apps are transferred over to the new rom. (like random games and apps)
Also every time I uninstall any app I get "cannot read data/xposed/modules.whitelist"
The app still uninstalls but this just concerns me.
Could anyone help me out? I just want to do a fresh install of liquid smooth.

Wipe everything, data, system, cache and dalvik
Then try reflashing your rom
Ok have you installed any app to sd type of application? It sounds like your internal storage is being read as external and visa versa.
Also i know there's lots of support for twrp but I swear by cwm when it comes to the GS3. I use twrp on my Nexus and that's fine but on the S3 cwm has always worked better in my opinion.
What roms are you trying to flash? They are sprint s3 roms right from this section?

I've done that. That's what the one post suggested.
I just don't understand why I'm still getting apps showing up when I install new roms.
What about wiping storage? I know you don't want to lose anything but it sounds like something in your storage causing this.

I haven't installed any app to sd type applications.
I do think part of the internal is being used as external but I thought that's just how it was.
I only have roms, nandroids, and titanium backups on my sd card.
I installed twrp because when I first started it seemed like that was what most people were recommending but it doesn't matter to me. I might switch.
Also I've been switching between cleanbean and liquid smooth, both from this section.
The main thing that bugs me is when uninstalling apps says "cannot read data/xposed/modules.whitelist"
The app still uninstalls but it just doesn't seem good.

A couple weeks ago, I was switching from a AOSP ROM to a TW ROM and I got the same error. Thinking it was TWRP, I hooked my phone up to my computer and flashed CWM. I then tried to flash the ROM in CWM and it was a no go. I still got the same error. I just decided to transfer all my data from my internal sd to my computer. I used Odin to flash the stock tar file. After that, I used QBKing77's method to root from recovery. Then I flashed my ROM and I got 0 errors. So all I had to do was start fresh haha. It took a bit of time because I was taking many precautions (as should you) Good luck!
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Yes just as posted above, but before going the route of Odin back to stock. Copy all your files (important) from internal and external to your computer. Then boot into recovery no need to change now and reformat your internal and external storage, wipe cache and dalvik and fix permissions and reboot. Then download a fresh zip of a rom to flash and test it. If it all works then go through your files and move back what you need. I'm pretty sure you have a bunch of O folders in your internal.

NANDROID Backups Don't Restore

The problem is I can't restore my Nandroid backups as they fail every time the custom recovery reaches /data. I have tried every custom recovery for the T-Mobile Galaxy S4. I'm no noob when it comes to android, I have done my research and haven't found any solutions. I flash a lot of custom roms and not having a Nandroid backup to go back to is a big pain. This is my first time I've posted on XDA and I really need some help.
You have to odin back to stock and reroot only way it worked for me, kept getting into bootloops when going back to nandroid

Can't say I've had any issues with nandroid restores (just backed up and flashed, knocking on wood...) do you have sufficient space in your internal storage? Others have report, and I've seen, internal storage filling up from backups that are 'hidden away' by CWM but don't get deleted by a data wipe.

I have my backups stored on my External SDCard, I don't think that space is an issue. Also, I odin'd back to stock, re-rooted and all that and I'm still getting the same error.
I feel your pain, but doing odin is a pain in the a$$, have you tried any other recovery yet? That way you can see if it is a recovery issue, do a backup and then a restore to see, maybe even rolling back a version or 2, I would try these, before I go thru all that again.
The Ax says, just trying to help here. Good luck.
Sorry didn't see your last reply, must have happen when I was replying, wow today's technology.

Your microSD card might be defective. As uncivilized suggested try the restore from internal SD. That should work.
So I just backed-up to the internal SD-Card then Restored from the Internal SD-Card and it failed again.:crying:

Im using twrp v 2.5.0.3 but im not seeing it in their website. Try using an earlier version than 2.6.0.0 , I would format internal sd card flash a rom from your ext-sd card then use odin to flash an earlier version of twrp.tar
I have followed all of your steps exactly except for I flashed 2.5.2.0 instead of 2.5.3.0 and it still failed, this is pretty frustrating but thanks for the help.:crying:

So as I was flashing a rom and decided 2 wipe my internal memory from recovery(maybe where I went wrong??). Now after flashing a rom I can't reboot my phone without it freezing. Any help or answers will be very much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Odin back to stock it's your best shot. I've done the exact same thing and that was the only choice I had left and the only one that worked..

Try flashing CWM recovery on it.
I you are on twrp wipe everything (advanced wipe and click everything) 3 times. Then flash your ROM of choice (TW: wicked recommended, GE: evil unwizzed recommended, AOSP: domination recommended) clear cache, dalvek, fix permissions, reboot, and let sit for a bit, (5 minutes min.) Reboot and enjoy.

TWRP is the issue. I am going to assume thats what you are using. A known issue with that recovery is it will mess up your phone if you format internal with it. You will need to Odin to stock to fix the partitions and start from there again.

Okay you need less speculations and more solid answers. To do that I need more information.
What recovery are you using?
What exactly do you mean by freezing during boot? Be specific. Tell me what happens during the boot process and where it fails.
Have you tried starting over and flashing the ROM again?
Have you tried redownloading the ROM adn flashing a new copy again? It's possible that this is as simple as a bad flash or that your download was corrupted.

I wasn't speculating. Those symptoms describe the issue exactly. If he is using TWRP then that is the problem. It has been documented a number of times that if you format internal memory using that recovery, your phone will freeze at that screen or just boot into recovery only. I appreciate your willingness to help but try not to be condescending towards others who are also here to help.

Easy, tiger. No one is attacking you and I didn't even have you in mind when I posted. Relax. Multiple people are throwing out random ideas about a cause and a cure based on very limited information from the OP.
You said you aren't speculating...then said IF he is using TWRP. You don't know he is. That is speculation.
Then is matters which version of TWRP. 2.5 is very different than 2.6.
And even if he is using TWRP those symptoms could still be caused by other factors, including the issue you mentioned.
Without knowing all the details any suggested fix is based off of speculation.
You could very well be correct. But you are making some assumptions to fill in missing data not provided by the OP to reach your conclusion.

Thanks everyone for all your help! I have been using TWRP, and the freeze is while it's booting down. It will show the samsung s4 then freeze, the only 1 possible thing I can do after that is: pull battery, manually boot into recovery, format internal data again, reboot recovery, full wipe (data, system, cache, dalvik cache), flash rom, and never reboot.
I really like "Odin back to stock" n think that is all I can do at this point as lagunas11 has mentioned. I hope this works because I really don't want to go through the whole process I just mentioned because I can't reboot my phone at all. Thanks again everyone!

For clarification on the Non Specific comments I've read which are disingenuous to the TWRP Recovery , I've been using TWRP 2.5.0.2 Without issue for months. I have read about issues with version 2.6.0.0 which I'm unsure if they have been resolved. With the above being said, I would:
Install TWRP 2.5.0.2 if not already
ODIN Samsung Stock Firmware
and start from the beginning.
I don't have a dog in this fight regarding Custom Recoveries. I've used CWM on my previous devices, and ever since owning my S4 I've been using TWRP 2.5.0.2 Without issue, although there are other Custom Recoveries which also work well without issue

This. TWRP 2.5 is much less problematic than 2.6
It is the way to go.
I would try flashing 2.5 an doing a full wipe and clean install first before the Odin option just because its quick and easy to try. If it doesn't help then Id try Odin.
Just make a backup of all your data with Titanium first so you can easily restore it after you are all fixed up.

[Q] Problems with freezing and phone soft-resetting itself

Hey guys, I've been having this issue for a while now, but I've been deathly busy the last couple months so I haven't posted about it!
My issue is this: I've been having issues with the phone randomly freezing which results in the phone soft-resetting itself. I also have issues with apps randomly crashing. Occasionally, I will turn off the screen and when I try to turn it back on, it won't work and the phone will soft-reset. Another interesting thing I've noticed is that when I'm listening to music (stored on the SD card), sometimes I'll get distorted sound for a while. Usually, it fixes itself, but occasionally this leads to the phone soft-resetting. In general, since these symptoms started showing up, I've been dealing with stuttering and lag on my phone
Is there a possibility that my microSD card went bad? (could that even cause this kind of problem?) My card is kind of old, but I don't have any spare microSD cards to test
I'm currently using STS Rom on MK4, but this problem happened before I flashed that ROM. Before that, I was using Whompasaurus 4.2 (MA7)
Please let me know if you need me to do something to my phone!
Thanks in advance! I appreciate it

I have the same problem. A d about your quesrion if the sdcard can be causing this freezing. The answer is yes. Try formatting both Internal and external memory. Put all your data to your comp and then format and see if that work's. I havent done it because my comp wont turn on :/.
Hopefully it helps

I'm relieved that I'm not alone, but sorry to hear you're having the same issues. It's not fun at all
I've reformatted the memory before, but I'll try it again. I'll let you know how it goes!

Yes it sucks. It is what it is :/. Alright sounds good!!
so, a quick update. Unfortunately, after wiping everything, I'm still having issues, but it doesn't seem as bad. It might be a wonky flash though, so when I get some more time next week, I'll try flashing again.
I do have to get a new SD card for sure though. When I use that SD versus a backup one that I have, I get more crashes.
I had the same issues. Noticed it was happening whenever my signal was low - Wifi or mobile radios. It would just freeze for minutes at a time or soft reset. I couldn't get anything done! I ended up flashing different custom recoveries and wiping partitions and formatting system, data, cache, all storage, carrier and efs (after backups of course) I flashed the StockMC2 zip with flash counter reset and it seems my problem worked itself out. I thought it was a hardware issue for sure, but that seemed to get it working again. Even fixed my laggy home key issue.
I recommend being extremely-and-dangerously careful if you find you want to venture towards the efs or carrier partition meddling. Read up to the fullest and make sure you use backups.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try it sometime and report back
To isolate the SD card issue try storing all your files to the internal and see how that goes first? If the problems persist then it could be the card?
When I ran Whomp it was very smooth, fast and stable (on multiple Note 2's). Could be a bad download? After clearing up the card issue I would recommend odin back to stock and start fresh again to see if the issues get fixed.

Thanks for the reply,
I tried switching SD cards and I still had the issue, so I figure it's not the SD card. I had Whomp before, but I've tried a few different ROMs since then and I've had the issue with every rom, unfortunately
Have you tried ODIN back to a stock firmware and re-root? Since I flash a lot of roms too I normally (as a habbit) flash back to a completely stock firmware just to get misc files/junk/bugs/slowness if any, off my phone and this normally helps with whatever issue I was running in to. Hope this helps?
Sorry for the late response. Just a couple days ago I ODIN'ed back to stock, but unfortunately, the problem is still there

Is it possible a logcat would help? If I remember right, it's difficult to grab a logcat for sudden and random restarts, right?
Regardless, taking a look at a logcat app, it seems I do get a decent number of errors. I'll look into this a bit more when I get some more time after my current set of exams

I tried using your method! The phone has frozen once in the first hour I've been toying with it, but I don't know if it's the same issue. Hopefully it'll work! I'll report back after using my phone for a while
Soooooo interesting thing that I found out. My data folder isn't actually being wiped in all this! I went to check it out and it turns out some app files in /data/data/ are still there even after ODIN, full wipes, etc.

Not to doubt your intelligence but merely just to make sure, which one-click version did you end up getting, because there are two (2) versions ... full restore and NoData restore Rooted and unrooted, I believe MK4 hasn't have rooted version and only full restore.
Have you tried a factory reset after one-click that should wipe it.
I used the MC2 full restore unrooted without any problems.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
Well, with the stuff that you linked, I used the MA7 full restore rooted. (Maybe I should try the MC2 full restore unrooted) But I've also ODIN'ed stock MC2 as well. I've wiped using factory reset from the settings menu as well as through Philz and TWRP making sure system and data were both selected. I wanted to avoid knox for now, so I used older versions.

Now come to think of it I might have actually done a format /system, format /cache, format /data and format /data and /data/media in philz under Mounts and Storage and rebooted into download mode and did the one-click MC2 Full Restore after that.
just make sure not to format the ext. SD card.
Give that a try.

That is the best way to go about this. Stick with the stock unrooted MC2 with flash count reset via Odin. You can then use The Note 2 ToolKit to root etc. I'm thinking if your bootloader was updated via the MK4 with Knox, you should try to downgrade it back to the MC2 version. toolkit allows you to flash the older bootloaders.
Do this:
FIRST flash Phil's recovery version 6.07.9.
Then wipe everything except external sdcard. Next flash the stock unrooted MC2 with flash count reset
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086769
Once you complete that, immediately do a rom restore from settings and verify you are on the MC2 modem and kernel.
Then use the Note 2 toolkit from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957155
At this point you need to flash the ALL IN ONE boot image, root &,recovery. I use the older version 2.0 of the ToolKit because it works best for my phone.
Once your rooted, etc. then reboot your phone into recovery and flash AGAIN Phil's recovery version 6.07.9
Then reboot recovery and once in Phil's recovery do all the wipes again and then flash the ROM of your choice.
You will also need to flash the correct modem for the ROM you flash. If you flash a JellyBean/MK4 ROM, you need to flash the MK4 modem. ROMS will have the kernel built in but if your flashing a TW ROM double check the kernel date and it doesn't hurt to reflash the stock MC2 or MK4 kernel because I have flashed a few stock TW ROMS that did not update the kernel so double check your kernel in settings-about phone.
This should get you back on track.
