GNEX RUNNING SLOW !!help!! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello there new to the Gnex... OK here is my issue. I previously had an S2. On quadrant I was scoring 3600. My GNex is only scoring 2300 on a good day! I do not have a lot of apps, as a matter of fact I have the same apps I was running on my s2. I switched to the gnex for the pure Google experience and the plethora of knowledge on this forum. I've been scouring the different threads reading about all of the different ROMs and kernels out there all I want to do is to make my gnex as fast as the S3. On some other forums I was reading about the SUPER NEXUS which is an S3 rooted with the gnex software. Can you guys and gals help me to solve this issue??? I'd surely appreciate it. My apologies in advance I'm really not all that techy as most of you here but again that's one of the reasons I switched up to the Gnex because of the huge support base . Hey thanks in advance!
P.S. is there a swype gesture feature on this device? Or do I have to download swype? I find it most useful at times when I can't use both hands to type.

Dude benchmarks don't say everything about user experience, and especially not Quadrant. GPU on Gnex is slower than Mali-400 on S2. Plus it has bigger, higher resolution display and thus more pixels to push. It will always score worse than S2 unless you OC it.
Galaxy Nexus still provides great user experience but it cannot compete with todays flagships like S3 in terms of speed. It' a different league. No matter how you try u will not make tiomap 4460 faster than S4 Krait.

Making a GNex as fast as an SIII is simply impossible, you'd fry your hardware before you would even come close to the Quadrant results of that phone.
That being said, I have to agree with the previous reply, pure horsepower isn't everything, and I for one have never experienced any lags or slowdowns.
Then again, I keep my phone clean of anything running in the background, for example I only use ONE widget, and that also only on the Lockscreen (CyanogenMod's cLock).

I have a widget on every homescreen and device still feels snappy. Smoothness remains practically unaffected by those widgets.

I just picked up a Nexus and have been using it lately, I think it's fairly snappy for the age of the device. I was curious on the Quad score so I just ran mine and I'm at 2676 which isn't to hateful....no overclock just a custom kernel and rom

P.S. is there a swype gesture feature on this device? Or do I have to download swype? I find it most useful at times when I can't use both hands to type.

Haha. I know right.

What about to try some 3D games and find out the result instead of weird benchmarking that say anything.

Whoa!! Hey people read carefully! I'm new here and to the whole rooting and unrooting whats good and what isn't? Just some simple answers are all that's needed. Thanks to those who helped your input was very helpful.

try using custom kernel like AK

^ive been meaning to give that kernel a try

Really you must uninstall that benchmark, do a lot of read and help yourself. I was a sgs2 user, and i am happy when i switched to gnex. The only thing that bad from this device is camera, s2 is better but i don't care.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Your GNex will never be as fast as an S3. It just doesn't have the hardware. With that said, benchmarks test a different set of the phone's capabilities relative to the way a normal user uses the phone. I would try out some ROMs and kernels, read up on tweaks for your chosen ROM/kernel combination, and go from there.
And swiping is in 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 stock keyboards. You might need to enable them from the Settings - Language and keyboard menu (I'm not 100% sure because I use Kii).

Want a really fast GNex?
1. Install CM10.1 latest nightly
2. Install Franco kernel
3.Over clock to 1.6ghz
4. Enable force GPU rendering
5. profit
You will get 54fps in epic citadel high quality and never lag. This phone may not "keep up" spec wise but there isn't a game or anything I can't run on this phone. Nothing can challenge my GNex

Brilliant solution, not everyone has enough cash for an S3.
Also, for me at least, the S3 is too big while the GNex ist just about right, and I don't really have small hands.
But everyone has different preferences.

Disable "Scrollingcache" for buttery smoothness?

Could anyone throw in a modified framework.jar for stock ROM or CM9 with scrollingcache disabled? For the Sprint galaxy nexus
Most people think the Galaxy Nexus is pretty smooth, but for us OCD type and especially us former iPhone owners know it's not 60fps smooth.. It's very stuttery due to the scrolling cache... Disabling it makes it MUCH smoother.. Like iPhone 4S smooth.
I'm not sure if this was ever done on other models of the GN but there's nothing like that available for the Sprint version yet. AOKP has that option, but so far there isn't a port, either.
Thanks!

Understandable. I've been trying to get my nexus as smooth as my 3gs. If u want to disablr scrolling cache, u could put in your build.prop
persist.sys.scrollingcache=3
Some custom ROMs, like the latest AOKP, allow you to disable the scrolling cache. Otherwise, it's not built into the default system.
I'm a bit confused. Isn't scrollingcache supposed to help with smoothness? Why does disabling it make the system smoother?

liquid ics has the feature
Hi,
Found this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411317&highlight=scrolling+cache
- Some android applications have some lag when they scroll.
I found in logcat that garbage collector is working to much when I do some scroll in application.
I googled about it and found the 'scrollingcache' function inside android making problem.
Some application developers recommend disable 'scrollingcache' in app's internal config.
But not all applications have disabled scrollingcache.
So the mod I'll do will disable the scrollingcache throughout the Android OS.
All apps will have no problem with scrollingcache.
I've had scrolling improvements with facebook, playerpro, poweramp, gallery apps , etc.

I was also an iphone 4s user and i noticed a huge difference in the smoothness of the devices, the 4s is much smoother and actually has 0 stuttering, on s3, even on the home screen if i scroll medium to fast i see the stuttering.

I just wanted to confirm the OP. A good confirmation came from improved scrolling in Adobe Reader, which was horrid across multiple ROMs I've tried. It was a great deal faster with the newest Sprint OTA and GLaDOS 2.1 kernel.

The advantange of disabling the scrolling cache is more smoothness.
But what is the advantange, when it is on?
Wgich advantage has the scrolling cache?
hate to echo some users above, but wouldn't scrollling cache set to true/on be better for smoothness?

For those curious about the scrolling cache here's a video called "the world of ListView" :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skD1fjxSRog (jump to 37:14) .
Even though it's quite an old video, there are still many questions on StackOverflow related to ListView which would get solved by just watching this video.
OP, Learn a little bit about how to use Android and Linux. And then ask your questions.
I use stock CM11 with Smitty's Kernel. OC'd CPU 1.5Ghz and GPU at 512Mhz. ZRAM enabled. And a custom 3800mAh battery for battery.
Gotta say without any additional Linux tweaks my device is flying!

Considering getting rid of Quad Core One X for Nexus

As per the title, will I miss the Quad Core? Especially concerned about smoothness in the browser, for example scrolling when viewing flash elements is as if the flash element wasnt there on the One X.
Im considering the swap as I want a Nexus device for dev support and can have a bit of money left over for the next Nexus if I do this swap.
It will not be a regret! I was a fan of the build quality of the one x and its speed but the nexus with jb on it ownes the one x (in my opinion). Plus there is a port of HTC sense 4.0 if you are a fan of sense!

Thanks for the reply mate. How does the battery life compare (screen on times)? And does the Nexus feel "cheap" this is one criticism i see levelled at it a lot. I have the option of the S3 but that does look ugly and cheap (too much chrome and too much shine as well as too much plastic.)
I will miss the One X's looks but I love the look of the Nexus, particularly on the front.
Could you give me a test of browser/flash performance? How is it on the Youtube website scrolling when the video is playing? Are button presses on the flash object (like pressing play/mute/pause) instant? I'm a heavy flash user (cricket/football/Sky Sports streaming) so this is important to me.

Brilliant. Just trying to think of things I could throw at you lot here - I know what works smooth on the One X and what doesn't. For one thing CVG on desktop mode would have lag from when you put your finger on the screen to the actual scroll taking place.
PCgamer.com was also similarly troublesome on the One X.
What "Screen On" times can I expect with a Nexus? I get 3/4 hours on the One X
You'll get comparable screen on times. Most people get in the three to four hour range. Some less though, and I have seen upwards of five plus hours. A lot will depend on your setup and kernel of choice.
The One X is a nice phone, one that would be tempting to me, as I do like Htc's build quality.
The Nexus doesn't feel overly cheap to me or like to much plastic. I think that may be due to the Glass front and I run a cover so that kinds of changes the feel of the textured back to me.
I do really like the dev community and support that the Nexus receives. One of the reasons that it would be hard for me to leave the Nexus.
Good luck in your choice.

Trust me, i owned htc and samsung phones, and since my htc desire days i stopped using stock browsers and dolphin was the main one on all phones that followed. after getting the gnex i was still skeptical about stock browsers, but it's really the best browser i've tried so far, adding to it's speed all the cool stuff like guick controls and inverted screen rendering, u just can't go wrong with it. Furthermore the jelly bean experience is far away from anything available on any other android device out there. I posted a youtube link a while ago about a review for JB on gnex , a part of the review concentrates on browser performance, i'll post the link here as soon as i get to my pc (don't feel like searching over my phone)
Edit: as for screen on times, it depends if u're planing to get the gsm or cdma (verizon/sprint) version. I have a gsm one and on ics i used to get continuosly over 5hrs screen on. On jb it dropped to ~ 4-4.5 hrs , i think Google Now is eating the battery, (giving me navigation and calculating traffic to home) even though i don't need it, and actually i'm still enjoying all these JB features so i guess i'll turn some of those uneeded gnow cards OFF soon, pretty sure it'll improve my battery life more

Guys you're being ridiculously helpful and I'm seriously tempted to jack in the One X and get the Nexus tomorrow even!
That review you mentioned above would be great to see.
What JB ROM/Kernel combo would you recommend and could you point me in the direction of the thinnest case for the back of the phone?
I'd be on GSM in the UK BTW.
Does overclocking to the 4460's 1.5ghz massively impact battery life? And how effective is undervolting? I've read you can UV the CPU/GPU and Screen as well as another chip?
For the fella above that had the ONE X would you say the camera/screen is markedly better on the HTC or is it negligible? Screen more important than camera to me.
Also is this colour accuracy patch still in use with many Kernels? The ONE X screen is streets ahead in terms of colour IMO and this seems to certainly help? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521195
Lastly just to reaffirm, scrolling performance with a flash video playing is instantaneous?
Don't even need 1.5ghz. Its smooth at 1036mhz.

Achieved it yesterday. Well actually almost everyday. Stock jb with stock kernel. Only rooted deoxdexed, bigxie version. I don't use setcpu or anything. Gps and bluetooth on when needed. And since I don't use nfc, I turned it off and greatly improved the battery too. Auto sync are all on, auto-brightness n also plume updating every 30 minutes.
Btw, I use it alongside my one x too. The thing is, it's been 24 hours since I last touch my one x. Damn it that shows how much I love nexus and aosp! You won't regret it mate. I prefer using my nexus over one x in anything! Really tiring waiting for CM to come official for one x. Grrr...

I can't say on the Stock Browser with Ics, as I was using Chrome. But on JB with the stock browser, I just opened Youtube, and had no lag at all. Very smooth. I've been really impressed with the improvements to the Stock Browser in JB. I tried Chrome, and it was choppy. With the performance of the Stock Browser, I see no reason to use anything else now though.
What everyone else has said about not needing to overclock. Very true. I run at 1036 with no issues. I will push it up to 1500 if I want to run a bench test, but other than that, there really is no reason for me to OC.
The Gpu can be OC'd. I haven't noticed a lot of difference between 384 and 512. I don't play a lot of labor intense games though. Jelly Defense and Ski Safari are the only two games I have installed at the moment. Even the stock 307 setting works fine for these.
I have tried a few of the Kernels, but have been using Trinity exclusively now for the past few months both on Ics and now on Jb. It's all subjective to personal taste though. If you make the switch, there are many Kernels and roms to choose from, all with there pluses.

Your expert opinion please

Hello guys n devs,
I have a Galaxy S phone and thinking of moving to Galaxy Nexus. Would you like to comment and give your opinion on this please?
With respect to Battery life, overall performance, any specific issue you would like to mention about.

Performance on this phone is beastly, especially with jelly bean update. Battery life is under Android average. Some issue that some people are having is signal loss and such, but had none of those problems.

Yes, screen is one of the BIG issue with galaxy nexus. Whites are very washed out, but the worst part is, in low brightness level, everything looks so grainy and such. Of course, you can just flash custom kernel that supports screen adjustment and that does help a bit, but still is disappointing in my opinion. You still can get used to it.
Edit: also, I haven't tried it miui and probably won't, since I don't like it. Battery on Wi-Fi is exception in my opinion, but once you use mobile data, it drains the battery. For Rom recommendation, I can't say which is the best Rom, since everyone prefers different roms. What I recommend you to do is try all of them that you are interested in. I personally used many different roms and stayed with AOKP jelly bean, because I love all the features that it brings

Hi man i was in the same situation as you i had a galaxy S and now i moved to nexus. Let me share some ideas.
First it's a great phone. After you play with android stock interface never ever you will turn back to touchwiz bull****t. Even for an S3.
You said you have Miui. I remember also i used that on S best rom in matter of performance. Here on Nexus you will have a lot of pure Android interface roms with a good performance. I'm sure the design it's enough good to not come back to Miui. I tried it on Nexus but don't like it (to big screen for iphonish intreface).
As for other aspects screen: one of the best on the market Hd display, performance now with jelly bean it's ok. It has the same gpu as S so if you are not a gamer it's enough you can play almost all the games. Battery instead will last shorter than on a S you know dual core hd screen but it's decently. Also custom roms are more 'professional' here since it's a dev phone.
So you will have what and where to choose.

Custom ROM S3 vs Stock (TW) S4

Just a quick comparison...
My boss has a Verizon S4, completely stock....Today she asked me to go through it and set up her blue tooth, office Wifi, and get rid of some of the notifications she's getting all the time.
I took this time to dig into the phone and compare her stock Verizon S4 to my At&t DeTmobilized (1.5) S3. First off, I love the S4.. But after playing with the two side-by-side, my NEED to get one has subsided quite a bit.
S3 - Snappier/faster UI.. Everything seemed to respond quicker (this is a very snappy ROM)
S3 - Opened apps quicker
S3 - S Voice responded quicker
S3 - S Voice gave quicker results (when a question was asked to both at the same time)
S3 - Opened up websites quicker using Chrome
S3 - loaded websites faster, but didn't render them as fast (if that makes sense?).
S4 - Camera was amazing, pic quality seemed pretty close (at least on the small screens)
S4 - Rendered the websites slightly faster (became clear faster).
S4 - Quadrant Standard showed it was 4000 points higher than the S3 (S3 was around 6000, S4 was around 10,000), but didn't feel it when using it.
At&t's LTE was faster in this location with the At&t S3 at 26mbs and the Verizon S4 at 14mbs.
Just some quick comparison... I realize if the S4 had a custom ROM, it would have smoked the S3 in most (or all) aspects. But this makes me feel good having an S3.
This is a nice comparison. Ive actually owned both an S3 and an S4 on AT&T and have great LTE coverage here in Nashville. And your Comparisons are pretty much on par with my experience. I've since went back to the S3 just for a pound for pound better device software wise.
Thanks for your work.
I agree!! Been running the same ROM since inception and love it!! I really wanted an s4, but will probly hold out til the s5 or something, this phone is more than good enough for the time being. On a side note though, quadrant is not reliable at all, and the score proves nothing!!
At&t LTE is faster than Verizon's LTE for me too. Thanks for the comparison. S3 is also nice because it has an unlocked bootloader.

Yeah, I kind of figured that.. I can run it 3 time and get 3 different results that range from the mid to upper 4000's to lower 6000's on my S3. But I figured 4000 points is a "ballpark" comparison.
Just curious, are there any good bench-marking programs our there?

I just recently installed my first custom rom on s3, and the difference is insane. It's soooo snappy. It was starting to feel a bit slow with the S4's and HTC One's of the world floating around, but my desire to upgrade has also subsided a great deal.
Not planning to upgrade anytime soon. S3 is freaking awesome!

I am more than happy with this device and don't see much of a reason to upgrade.
We have a working build of 4.3 (CM 10.2) thanks to some very keen developers. Performance wise CM 10.2 on this phone is on par with GS4 or HTC one as any lag I noticed in 4.2.2 is gone and everything feels more "buttery". The improvements from 4.2 to 4.3 are anything but minimal (http://developer.android.com/about/versions/jelly-bean.html) and it really shows on this device.

Good comparison of the two phones. This actually calmed my phone upgrade urge also. I wish we could see more of these type of threads especially those that used both phones. It could bring some interesting discussions and information.

I feel exactly the same way. After using my friends s4 I realized that in terms of real world use they don't differ by much. Not really worth the upgrade, at least not right now.

CM 10.1
I've been installing ROMs on my SGIII for awhile now and I highly recommend CM10.1. Its fast, very functional, pretty, and has a wonderful battery life.
The best app for rating battery life is Better Battery Stats
strat just released RC5 for Intergalactic 3.0. Its great! You may want to keep an eye out for the final release.
cm 10.2
Im loving my s3 with the latest build of cm 10.2

Did anyone else catch the article about Samsung cheating at benchmarks on the S4?

Yes. They inserted code to basically overclock just for the tests. Sneaky.
I only played with the S4 in the att store... (ahh rhymes). But I really love my S3 on tasks AOKP with KTs kernel. Feels nearly faster. I think I'll wait for the S5 and for task to build his AOKP for its!

att vs. vzw?
I wonder how much of a difference the two carriers' versions of these phones make for the performance. I also have an AT&T S3, and on the newest CM 10.2 it is very snappy and the battery life is great. I have a friend who has a similar set-up on his Verizon phone and his stutters sometimes and doesnt get as good battery life as me. I do have AT&T LTE in this area, not sure what kind of coverage Verizon has though.

[Q] Is my phone slowly deteriorating? (terrible performance)

Hello whoever is reading this,
I'm getting real tired of how slow my phone has consistently been slow for months now. I've tried a bunch of roms and kernels in combination, and while it seems to work smoothly after a clean flash, it slows back down to its usual laggy state within a few days (or even hours!)
I partially blame the age of the phone, as it's old processor probably can't handle all of the customizations being thrown at it that are really being developed for the Nexus 4. But aside from that, everyone in every rom or kernel thread is always raving about how "buttery smooth" or "lightning fast", or whatever else their phone is, claiming performance is awesome. It could just be that all those users are just used to some lag, but I'm really starting to feel like I'm the only one who has such performance issues.
For this reason I'm wondering if it's possible that something hardware-wise might be starting to die, similar to how "cheap memory is killing off Google Nexus 7". Is this possible?
Is there any app that can run hardware tests to check for things like that? I would love to see if my suspicions are correct or totally wrong. Is there anything else I should try?
I'm currently running the latest ak47 rom (AOKP Milestone 2 on top of VANIR (linaro), and using Fancy Kernel. I've found the performance is pretty good compared to other roms I've tried but I still find myself waiting seconds for the app drawer to open, to scroll through pages in the app drawer, etc.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Hmmm... if it is anything related to what was happening with the Nexus 7, then you've probably heard what Android 4.3 did for it. I'm writing this from my Galaxy Nexus, and it hasn't been faster since 4.1; whatever 4.3 did for the Nexus 7 has a similar effect on my GNexus. It took a couple days, but I have my butter back!
Before the update, I was in the same boat as you. Even the keyboard was ridiculously laggy. Now? Buttery. Not Nexus 4 buttery, but buttery.

I didn't hear what 4.3 did, but I gather that it improved the speed? Sweet, maybe I'll try that. My issue is I'm too addicted to AOKP
But I'll have to try a stock 4.3 rom or something and hopefully I'll find the same results as you. Thanks for your input!
My question about an app that runs hardware integrity tests still stands.

No problem! And it provided a lot of behind-the-scenes improvements for graphics processing. It also made FSTRIM turned on by default in the system; it will run whenever the battery is above ~70% and the device is idle. It basically stops the device from needing to perform multiple actions in the storage whenever it needs to read or write. You only notice the effects of it NOT being present over many write cycles, which is why performance may seem to have deteriorated over time.
And yeah, custom just gives you so many choices! But a few days with 4.3 should REALLY ramp up your performance. It takes a little while for FSTRIM to do it's magic. App drawer opens after 0.7 seconds or so, and swiping between pages is quite fluid and responsive.
Glad to be of service! Hope it helps out.

Aside from 4.3, I've found that if you goto Developer options, and lower the Transition, Window, and Animator scales from 1x down to .5x things seem to move more smoothly. Albeit they only reduce animation times, the visual effect may be enough. I also use Nova Prime launcher and turn animations to "Nova" speed. Things like the app drawer open instantly. Absolutely zero lag. What I'm running is in my sig...

This frustrated me for a long time until I came across this app (root needed):
LagFix Free: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix&hl=en
XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2104326#fm
"Some Android users suffer from poor performance after some days/weeks of heavy usage. This is due to a well-known TRIM bug affecting these devices. The source of the problem is that internal storage is not properly TRIMmed when needed. It is also well-known fact that running fstrim Linux tool from time to time fixes the issue until internal memory runs out of free blocks. LagFix is a user-friendly implementation of fstrim utility. It allows you to select which partitions to trim (you should leave defaults unless you know what you are doing) and run the process easily."
Android 4.3 finally implements this fix, so if you go a 4.3 ROM, you won't need this.
Yep, like they all said, 4.3 fixes that with things like TRIM, and I can attest to that firsthand.

I must say that the phone is faster on 4.3, but my battery life is horrible when comparing to 4.1.1 or even 4.2.2, especially when using the phone.
I don't know if it's true or I'm too bugged about it. Could someone please confirm it to me?

and for some reason, one screen time was BETTER than 4.2
I guess it's just bad luck haha.
Gonna test it calmly to be sure.
