Question about DPI (and MHL output) - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got the smart dock that lets me output to my LCD monitor from my Note 2. However everything looks a little blown up since it mirrors the screen exactly. Not exactly space-efficient.
I understand that changing the DPI to 280 or 240 will effectively make everything smaller (and thus appear higher-res) on the monitor output. I just wanted to ask some questions before trying this since I heard it 'breaks' certain apps.
Is there a way to switch DPI on-the-fly?
Was thinking of something like switching to 240dpi when I plug it into the dock so the output on the monitor doesn't look so blown up? I've never tried to use the phone at 240dpi all the time since I haven't really had a problem with the stock resolution.
Are certain apps completely unusable at 240dpi? I'd rather not have to download alternatives for a whole bunch of apps.
Currently running a stock 7105 ROM with basic tweaks like unlimited multiwindow apps, extra toggles and extended power menu. There is a version of the ROM that adds 240dpi with 'Xposed' but I'm not really sure what that is.
Would appreciate some advice

No need to flash another rom, and just search and download xposed installer and then install xposed app settings app. You can set individual dpi for every app on your phone including your launcher. That way if you have certain apps that break with lower dpi then you can individually set a higher or default dpi for those apps. I hope this helps you.
Sent from the rabbit hole.

That would be perfect! I'll give it a try. Thanks!!!

[Q] ICS tablet mode - launcher recommendations

over at rootzwiki i just learned that ICS can go into tablet mode, so i did switch and i find it perfectly usable. some apps are even more useful than before like settings, mail, etc.
my only gripe right now is the launcher, it wastes space. i use nova with a 7x7 grid but in portrait mode its too small and in landscape mode i'd like to have more icons in the app-drawer.
does anyone know which launcher will do better? also, is it possible to get back stock launcher2? im on aokp b27 and it had trebuchet (which crashes) and nova.
thanks!
ps. for those who don't know it yet, try it out:
0. make a nandroid. should your launcher crash you are screwed
1. get latest aokp
2. change dpi to 190 in rom control
3. add hide-navbar option in powermenu
4. press powerbutton and hide navbar
5. reboot
trouble-shooting:
market trouble can be resolved by following the steps indicated in the AOKP dpi changer. i still had to manually delete its cache and data plus force close it until it finally shut up and let me download.
phone.apk will likely crash. it can be fixed be exchanging it with the one from AOKP's droid incredible build: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4168356/Phone.apk.html
i used adb, can also be done via root-browser i guess

ADW Launcher Ex works fine...
looks like what i needed, thanks!!! will now download and try
btw, i had problems using the phone app, it crashed. i read pushing the Phone.apk from aokp droid incredible build into /system/app works. and it did. now it runs perfectly, no fc's, no crashes. i uploaded it here in case anyone needs it: http://www.file-upload.net/download-4168356/Phone.apk.html
Yea I was going to say, ADW is my choice for my 10" Tablet.
My Setup:
Hide Dock Bar
Hide Status Bar (top part with App Drawer and redundant menu icon)
Hide Desktop Icon Text
Create a Drawer Icon coupled with whatever desktop icons.
Crank up the desktop Row/Column
This gives you a pretty large work area that is edge to edge. I don't use the dock bar but rather hide it and place my own icons. This removes the restriction of a 5 icon dock.
However I've never done this on my Nexus so I don't know how small the icons would be.
Hiding the statusbar is tricky because it doesn't work via the options checkbox. You have to create a gesture to hide/show statusbar. Go to the desktop and perform the gesture to hide it. Then go back into settings and delete the gesture. Now you'll gain access to the top bar.
With the Status bar gone, you access ADW Settings via the App Drawer like other ICS launchers.
why hiding the navbar? it's only initially since tablet mode brings its own, and i really like it so far. i find it more useful than the one in stock ICS even.
i installed adw and sadly i really don't like it so far. it feels like gingerbread and i hate having to theme ICS when im on ICS. but function-wise i got tiny icons in portrait mode and they seem to behave kinda strange. for now i got nova back, wastes space but i find it optically more appealing.
what i search would be a launcher that can stretch icons. i'd like it to behave just as before, if i use a 4x4 grid it would be cool if it could use the entire screen and not just a tiny fraction. nova comes close using a 7x7 grid but 49 tiny icons look kind of cluttered - not really nice for a homescreen.
btw, look how youtube reacted to tablet mode, never used a tablet or owned one, so my jaw pretty much dropped when i saw it running.
APEX launcher does the job. uses 100% screenspace and icons are big enough.
Also, check out Go launcher Ex. Make the icons larger in the settings menu. I manual set them to 80 and they look great. I also remove the top bar in the launchers setting menu. Set the screen to 6x6 and it looks perfect. Of course running an ICS theme but I don't mind a theme when I am actually on ICS. it is when you are on GB running an ICS theme that makes it feel cheesy!
I wish we could run the density in 160 but it seems like no phone.apk will run in that density. While running in 190 you need to use a modded market but it still seems like the market causes issues with certain apps while trying to download them. 160 would be native so we wouldn't need a modded market.
i still know it from my gf's phone, but must say i never liked it much. i guess im pretty happy now with apex in tablet mode, looks almost stock without the dpi changes, as it should. if i had the 5-button dock back and the notification-curtain (don't like they way they implemented that for tablets, it sucks) yeah it would be perfection but that can't be done unless the rom gets rewritten. im using it now daily, can live with small kinks and the new gapps/settings more than make up for it - would never ever want to revert to old mail/youtube/contacts/callendar, etc.
btw, are there rom's out there making dedicated use of it? i guess could care less about the newest tweak that gives me 5 minutes more battery power. but something that transforms the entire UI/IX into something more useful...
Go Launcher HD is made for tablets. I haven't tested it, but you can get a beta on their site.

Man that thanks button is in a bad spot. You just got a freebee.
That launder does not work with the densities that we can use. It does work at 160 in portrait but not landscape.
Wish someone implemented this as a stable and full functioning ROM..
Worked well with AOKP until it went into airplane mode and never got out. I then rebooted and my cellular data was gone all together. Guess it really thought it was a tablet.

Yeah, data seems to be a little weird. I downloaded a file then it just stopped and wouldn't connect again and I couldn't make a call either. It was still showing full bars and 4G though. A reboot fixes it. I was running Franco's kernel so thought maybe it had something to do with that so I am back on stock kernel and going to see how it behaves. I so don't want to give this up. It it pure awesomenes!

thats terrible, i better make a nandroid before i try it. a custom rom would be great though, im getting really tired fixing this up.
the thing is, i really dislike the new tablet notification center, and the launcher. i wish it would behave just like before, if it could perhaps be tricked into ignoring the fake dpi. and i reaalllyy miss the notification curtain and the dock-bar. i tried hours to find some replacement for the old dock, the only thing that came close was desktop visualizr from the market, it creates resizable launcherbuttons with or without label and let's you set icons/images.
i love the new apps and settings, but the homescreen looks kinda long and dorky.

guys, i modded apexlauncher with apktool. made some changes in dalvik code to trick it into getting back the old dpi and brought back the dock through changes in the res files. icons are back to normal size aswell. it craps its pants though when it goes to landscape and the appdrawer shows only half of the screen, definitively needs more work. if someone could help with this i'd really appreciate it.

[MOD] TABLET/HYBRID MODE UBER MOD [2012-04-24: v2.0: Nova is tablet-mode ready!!]

NEWS
Looking for a flashable ROM that does more than dropping you into tablet mode?
With little manual hacks and fixes we came only so far ... true hybrid mode with actual fixes and ICS-framework rewrites is being developed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619582
UNLOCK HYBRID MODE IN 3 SIMPLE STEPS MANUALLY
Note: If you followed all the steps and you get something else than what is shown in the snapshots above, please search the thread, many things have been answered a dozen times already. Also make sure you do a full backup before you attempt to change anything!
1. Change your DPI
Edit this line in your /system/build.prop: ro.sf.lcd_density=192
192 is for Galaxy Nexus only! You can calculate the magic value for your phone, the formula has been explained here.
2. Hide the Navigation-Bar and reboot
Add this line to your /system/build.prop: qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 and reboot
We have collected no experiences with hardware-button devices yet, if you're on such a device check out Xylograph's efforts
3. Drop a couple of apk's
They all belong to their respective owners
3.1-3.2: Use ADB or Root Explorer, do not install, just drop it into /system/app
If you encounter problems, go to CWM and wipe cache/partition & advanced/dalvik cache. Also wipe cache & data in Androids app manager (Settings/Apps/All/...) and push the apk's again
3.1 Nova Launcher: 1.1beta (still has some small blemishes) or our Hack (for now its closer to stock): Rapidshare, Mediafire
ICS launchers do have some issues with tablet mode, all except Nova
If Nova was already installed pre-installed, delete it before you push. In that case you might want to backup your Homescreens in Novas settings
I suggest you use a sane grid like 5x4, small margins for both width and height and persistant search bar on always
3.2 Hacked Play Market: Rapidshare, Mediafire
The old market gives you compatibility issues
Just backup the old one before you drop the hack (rename it to appname.apk.bak, appname can be either Vending or Phonesky, depends on your gapps package)
3.3 Keyboard: Play Marked
Androids standard keyboard has a weird sizing issue, it looks quite awful in tablet mode
1. download & install
2. rename /system/app/LatinIME.apk to LatinIME.apk.bak
3. Keyboard Settings/Advanced/Vibration Setting/10ms
More working keyboards:
Swype Beta
Swiftkey 3 Beta
Thumb Keyboard (paid App!)
HINTS
Go to Settings, Display, Font size, set it to Huge
AOKP: Uncheck the IME Switcher in UI Settings
CM9: Check "Auto Hide" in System/Statusbar to finally get real Fullscreen
Correct Wallpaper size + Template
You're on AOKP, troubled by button-spacing issues? Xylograph has found your fix
You're on AOKP, troubled by a crashing phone? Try this one: Rapidshare, Mediafire
CHANGELOG[/SIZE]
2.0: flashable ROM thanks to Zer0_Cool!
1.9: new keyboards up + IME switcher hint, thanks go to bill12690!
1.8: new google play fix, seems to find apps that it didn't find before, imdb for explample
1.7: nova spacing issues, better overscroll layout
1.6: nova optimized for "Huge" font settings / new experimental Google Play hack
1.5: fixed folder grid size / fixed app drawer layout / fixed dock divider height
1.4: nova 1.0.3beta instead of apex / app folders work! / grids/stacks work / no fixed grid, configure as you wish!
1.3: new phone.apk which works under aokp 4.0.4, thx to faunh for finding it!
1.2: market fix from lcd desity modder, thank you raubkatze for extracting it! ::]
1.1: apex v1.0.2beta / landscape works, dock excluded / optimized for settings/display/font-size: large
1.0: dock / normal sized icons / set apex into hybrid mode / phone.apk from aokp/droid incredible
This MOD looks awesome!
Thanks buddy!
I was looking for this since I ve got a taste of it on my Note
Good job
Cool! How is it in landscape? Data drops? More info on stability would be very helpful! Thanks!

no landscape in the launcher for now, just deactivate it. landscape for everything else is fine. i guess i'll fix it when i find the time. the dock has to be glued to the right side then, it should, in theory, not be so hard.
i did not experience data-drops until now. i can be reached just fine. i have to get back to my original country first and see if its an issue, sure hope not though. are you dead-sure it's not a radio/kernel/rom issue? by no means im an expert but in my naive mind i couldnt think of a reason why changing the dpi would make your signal drop.

No problems here with that. Did you push the phone.apk in the OP?
molesarecoming, no need to disable your navbar. Tablet mode does this automatically. I don't even have the option with Milestone 4 of ASOP and everything is just fine. And if people want even more room, all they gotta do is disable "show persistent search bar" in apex.
Also, imo no need to set your phone to always portrait. The app draw or home screen doesn't look perfect in landscape mode, but it's not all that bad. I have mine set to default which makes it only rotate in apps, never on home screen or app draw. (Not sure if that's what you meant) That's how I usually have things set anyway so it's perfect for me.
Been running this all day and I'm loving it!
Thanks again.

Technically it works, but not well. If you plan on using this, trust me use his modded apex. Most everything else looks like crap. The exception being ADW EX, that looks good as well.
not compatible apps
So I wanted to try this out cause it sounded awesome... now I have it installed and I am loving the look... but when I try to download my apps again most now are saying not compatible with my device... and suggestions?
Also is there a way to get a stock looking keyboard on this cause mine is like half the screen....
Thanks
Looks good OP. Nice job. You should use a newer Apex Launcher. v0.8 is 2 versions behind the latest 'stable' Apex version. I'd like landscape as well .

You need to use a hacked version of market/play store. I'm pretty sure there's a thread around here on xda with the necessary hacks for free or you can buy lcd density modder pro on play store which gives you access to a hacked version (both 'markets' accomplish the same thing from what I've read).
I'm excited for this one. Once this is easier to implement, i'll switch to this right away, best mod i've seen so far congratz!
Great mod also I just used spb shell 3d works great in tablet mode using this it uses the screen space well

every launcher "works," well, except trebuchet. but nova wastes space, shrinks your icons and hides the dock. if you can live with that, yes then it works.

go back to 320, force close market, delete cache and data, start it and press OK. go back to 192. it works, well, better but you still get that stupid message every now and then. but really it's their fault. it's easy to mod though, and there's been solutions for this.
install swype. it's the better keyboard anyway.

yeah i was wondering, in m4 the option was ... missing? weird. it's in my poweroptions now anyway. the problem was, system.UI crashed if i didn't disable the navigation-bar before reboot. it always did, so can it perhaps be they fixed it in m4?
in the hack at least landscape kills it, the dock gets punched out by the divider.

i dont know, its actually a feature of ICS - it does most of it by itself. can cna hide the navigation-bar? if not you can hack your framework. here's an instruction: http://baroqueworksdev.blogspot.com/2012/02/launch-tablet-mode-android-403-on.html but don't go to 160, it's way to small man.

i guess it can be modified, why not. trick it into believing the dpi of your device is 192. if you want you can have my apktool project (it took me days to figure out how to compile/decompile ics apk's without getting a crapload of error messages). with apktool you should be able to do this quickly. but as i wrote in the first post, if someone would invent a root-app that could individually set dpi for apps, it would do so much for us.

My experiences and quandaries with lower pixel density settings

Hi peeps,
I expect to get flamed for posting a repeat thread, for not fully searching the forums before posting, etc etc,
So instead of asking anything specific I'm just gonna share my experience so far with my Sprint Galaxy Note 2 and if any of you have any helpful tips for the issues I'm encountering, fire away.
I have searched for a few weeks now, and what I'm about to describe is where I'm at AFTER lots of experimenting and searching both this and other forums as well as plain old google web searches.
I researched devices before buying for something with enough processing power and RAM to replace my ASUS netbook, which, though small, wouldn't fit on my bike handlebars and was all around too bulky for outdoor adventures. Offline GPS app use, bike computer apps, taking videos in its handlebar mount as I rolled down the highway, etc, etc. I also fancied the idea of connecting it to the (usually 1080 16:9) TVs found in the hotel rooms across the country, most of which these days have an HDMI port on them. Also in my plans is to hack together some kind of case with a mini bluetooth keyboard in it.
I use Photoshop all the time on my Windows machines so I wanted something that would run Photoshop Touch. I downloaded PS Touch from the Amazon app store (paid for it legally) since Google Play wouldn't let me download it. I knew it was't officially supported before purchasing.
Then I set about hacking into things to get more content, icons, menus visible on the screen and tried to get PS Touch to display properly.
First I rooted the phone, installed super user, etc. Left the stock ROM on there. Then I modified the Build.prop for 180 pixel density, and voila, Photoshop Touch worked great, the full menus were visible. But a host of other problems presented themselves.
Some of the UI elements scaled to the display fine. 3rd party apps ALL look fine. They all scale correctly. The most obvious issue was that the home pages were still showing the same amount of icons, the grid count was the same, but all the icons where in the middle of the screen with lots of space around them. I noticed that the clock on the lockscreen was now in the upper left corner, and that Chrome was now showing (desktop/tablet style) tabs at the top. So I realized that some aspects of the UI and certain apps were coded to display different depending on the pixel density.
I'm wondering where in the APK's manifest.xml (or elsewhere) this is specified.
To get things looking better on the home screens and to enable landscape homescreens, I installed Nova Launcher, and I prefer it over the stock launcher. It's a more desktop like environment. I figured I could set up a homescreen page with lots of big widgets on it for fumbling with it on the go (making things big and easy to touch like with a 320 pixel density setting), and then I could have a bunch of icons on another homescreen page for the "desktop" style view when close to my face or connected to an external display.
All of this was fine except several of the widgets not longer worked, or didn't even show up in the widget list anymore. My list of issues follows:
- The multi-window app-chooser bar scales correctly when it's at the top or bottom of the screen, but does not completely span the display when on either side of the screen (in portrait OR landscape mode).
- The multi-window separator bar (between the 2 displayed apps) does not span the entire display, though it works otherwise
- In the stock e-mail app, landscape view works fine, but portrait view of the messages list and of the emails themselves is cropped to only the left side of the display, with blank space on the right.
- The drop-down notification drawer is the same number of pixels as it used to be (I believe) and therefore no longer scales to the entire display. In landscape mode, it's not only too small, but off-center as well. This is something I haven't been able to hack, there doesn't seem to be any notification drawer replacement apps.
- The alarm clock app (which honestly I liked better than any thrid party ones) stopped working completely. When I tap the Clock icon in the apps drawer, it starts up but only displays a black screen and then I get the error message that Clock has stopped. Bummer.
- The numeric keypad for the stock dialer app is up in the middle of the screen (vertically) and at the left edge.
- The UI elements, buttons, etc on the camera app don't scale, leaving buttons floating off of the gray background strips and over the top of the image viewfinder area. I prefer the interface of Camera JB+ anyway, which works great. But you can't use Camera JB+ with the stock messaging app if you wanna snap a quick pic to attach to a message. Unless you take the pic with Camera JB+, then go to messaging, then attach it from the stock gallery app. This leads me to one of my biggest questions. I'm sure it's been covered, but I don't know the terminology and numerous searches have yielded no answers...if someone just tell me what it's called, I'll do my best to search for it myself...I wanna know how to tell one app to allow me to use another app to import content What I mean is when, for instance, I go to attach a pic to a message, a list of sources comes up, gallery, camera, etc. But certain apps are't on that list...only the stock camera shows up, only the stock gallery app...sometimes this isn't the case...when I am in the stock contacts app, and I go to add a photo to a contact...it lets me choose from the various camera and gallery apps I have installed...when I click on the little button to message the contact, it lets me choose Handcent, etc...but the messaging app and the lockscreen wallpaper chooser in the settings menu don't let me choose images from anything but the stock gallery app, wheras the homescreen wallpaper can be chosen from any of my gallery apps. I want to know where to hack in and change this to "link" or "associate" the apps. Or at least I wanna know what this type of link between apps is called so I can search for it myself.
- The stock weather widget is just plan missing now. Don't know where it went. I liked it better than any of the ones I've downloaded.
I'm also noticing decreased battery life...not sure why, as I have a bunch of bloat apps removed and I'm running the same ROM. Maybe that's in my head.
So I'm looking at installing a custom ROM...but not sure where to start...I have searched and read about a bunch of ROMs for the Note 2. But nowhere did I see anything about how well the ROM's UI elements and included apps would scale to a 180 pixel density display...
I'd like a ROM that works well with my display settings, includes options for the number of icons on the home screen, where all the included apps see each other, and where I can ad any program to the multi-window list without hacking into each and every APK to enable it (I know there's really no way to do that, but perhaps an included feature to help you through the process without using a PC would be cool). I want everything deodexed so backups and restores are easy (I backed up a bunch of system apps and uninstalled them, creating a backup from ES File Explorer, AND saving the APK and ODEX files...but was unable to re-install them...).
Anybody have a good suggestion for a ROM that works well with different pixel settings?

I think you would REALLY benefit from installing the XPOSED app mod. Essentially, it changes the DPI value, but instead of changing the DPI for EVERY app, it only changes the dpi for the app you select.
so assuming you start from the normal 320 dpi, you can then assign Photoshop touch to run at 180 dpi, therefore ONLY affecting that app and leaving everything else the same.

AWESOME tool to know about, thanks. That sounds like it would do what I need...though I'd still like more/smaller icons on the home screen....Which I think you can do at stock pixel density with Nova Launcher paid version...
Researching XPOSED now...some people complain about longer phone startup...is it the kind of thing where you can use the app to modify the APK, then uninstall the app? I'm gonna find out...THANKS.
There is also a thread in the app/theme section regarding resized stock apps. The dialer, camera, keyboard etc were are scaled to a lower dpi. That might help some of your issues

I appreciate y'all takin the time to help me with this, Helps me out a lot......I have one question about android and scaling of graphics in general...The notification drop-down drawer...is that technically an "app"? Like is it one of the services, or hidden system apps or something...or is that "part of the frame work" and not skinable or changeable without changing ROMs? because I'm wondering how to scale that...but also just so I understand the OS better, what is that status drawer part of? Cause it's obviously not part of the launcher...
I'm about to try all these things out...thanks.
For email, pull the note 10.1 email apk and exchange apk from a 10.1 rom and put it in system/app reboot and enjoy!
That and as mentioned...xposed app is full of win. I personally use go launcher or apex launcher to fix the whole launcher issue.
The drop down is customizable. .you may really benefit from spending an hour or so reading through the themes and apps section

Its part of systemui.apk which includes the status bar, notification pull down, etc
I like to break stuff!
Android ui is the lock screen and context menus btw.
System ui for task bar.
Xposed is awesome for low dpi settings

Dudes....thanks a ton. I got all of that up and running. I'm able to set it up just as I want and with the tip about which app controls the context menus, that answered my next question. Totally tweakable. My only issue is that the stock dialer and stock contacts are really within the same app...I wanted to keep the dialer at default dpi and scale the contacts to be smaller....I'm guessing that's what a "shared package" is....which isn't supported yet....but I'll try that 240 dpi version mention above and see how that works.

custom roms that support low dpi like 167? and samsung keyboard

hi guys, i haven't rooted my replacement GN2 after I returned my first one.
I was wondering, are there any roms that allow you to lower your dpi to below 200, I prefer to use 167 dpi when i had my Amaze4G, and would like to do the same with GN2 (i want to maximize this 5.5" screen).
Also, can the samsung keyboard work on the lower dpi? On the GN2 I initially had, once I lowered the dpi, the keyboard crashes.
Touchwiz based roms mostly work on the stock Dpi which is 320. Anything below like 280 can really start to screw things up. Like phone dialer button placement is offeset same with the keyboard and other sammy apps like the built in camera app. But you can get other apps to replace those Sammy apps and whatever dpi you have set should work fine with them.
Now if you dont care for Touchwiz then try a AOSP Rom those work on any Dpi's.

I am using tweaked rom and xposed framework with xposed app settings apk to adjust each apps dpi (should work on any rom ) this way I set systemui to 240, along with some apps and leave touch with stuff at 320 stock.

Will that work n touchwiz based rom? I cannot use AOSP since I use the spen quite frequently, and from what i've read, aosp/aokp disables the button on the s-pen, and not to mention I like the samsung keyboard alot, with the numeric keys visible on top...
Also, I rooted using the 2nd option in the how to root (using the CF Auto root).... Using this method, can I still install custom roms? I don't want to use the 1st option with the CWM +SuperSU method as that disables the allshare cast functionality, and triangle away can't seem to return the count to 0 when used with that rooting method.
Which TW roms would you suggest that has the wifi tether working and unlocked?

A way to change per app DPI on lollipop?

Hi,with KK i used a xposed plugin called "app setting " can permit to change per app DPI,now on lillopop there is a way to change dpi for Every single app?
There an app on the market called texdroid it works good on the g3 but as far as per app goes
any way to have a tablet ui?
Texdroider chages dpi on whole System. No per app setting. No tablet UI possibilities. We have to wait for Paranoid implementing the per app dpi setting or for xposed running under lollipop...
i would really like to this as well but TBH dont know if we will ever be able to, Xposed would probably never get update for lollipop!
unless someone decides to build an independent app that can do this we are doomed to use the default ugly looking DPI.
another option is to use CM12, its set to use 560 dpi by default and it looks great and there are no weird looking apps there. the speed is AMAZINGLY FAST. the only downside for me is the camera quality, its not a sharp as the pictures in stock rom.
anyway lets cross our fingures for a dev to make such an app.
