[FAQ] Xperia Play Frequently Asked Questions [WIP] [Updated 21st Feb] - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Frequently Asked Questions
Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please feel free to PM me with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.
Q1: Why isn't Flashtool working?Make sure you have installed the drivers that are included in Flashtool. Make sure you are flashing the correct FTF for your device and make sure your phone is in the correct mode, fastboot or flashmode. You can refer to this guide for more help "How To Flash A FTF Using Flashtool" or "Little Flashtool tutorial".
Q2: How do I root my device? This depends on what firmware you phone is currently on. If the phone is below "xxx.xxx.62" then you can use the ZergRush exploit via superoneclick or flashtool. If the device is on "xxx.xxx.62" or above then you will need to downgrade or unlock your Boot Loader and use a auto-root kernel. Here are 2 useful tutorials "Root Firmwares Below '.62'" and "Root Any Firmware (Unlocked Bootloader)".
Q3: How do I unlock my Boot Loader? This also depends on your device, If it is a unbranded (has no carrier applications or branding) device then you can unlock it using sony's website. Unlock Bootloader Sony. Here is a useful guide that will help your determine if your device is unlock-able via the previously mentioned method "Unlock Xperia Play Bootloader (Un-Branded Devices)". If your device is branded or not unlockable via official methods then you can pay to have your boot loader unlocked by XDA Senior Member "Alejandrissimo" via PM or at his site "Paid Xperia Play Boot Loader Unlock".
Q5: Why should I unlock my Boot Loader? The main reason you would want to unlock your Boot Loader is to be able to install custom ROM's such as CyanogenMod, AOKP, Slimbean and even more. You can also flash custom kernels with a unlocked boot loader allowing you to get additional features, "Turbo Kernel" is a brilliant kernel as it allows you to multiboot 4 ROM's and they can even be GingerBread, ICS and JellyBean.
Q6: What is ADB?ADB is short for Android Debug Bridge it is useful for many things including getting logs, debugging and more. Here is a more detailed guide "ADB Guide"
Q7: What is the best ROM or kernel? This is probably NOT a good question to be asking. Asking this question will most likely get you made fun of, and since it is against the rules, your thread or post will most likely be deleted. The best ROM or kernel will depend on how you use your device and what you are hoping to get out of it. So, only you can answer this question, have a little bit of fun testing different ROMs and kernels and then pick the set up that works the best for you.
Q8: How can I "Multi-Boot" my device? The Xperia Play is now able to multiboot up to 4 ROM's and they don't even need to be the same android version, Jellybean, Ice Cream Sandwich and even Gingerbread is supported, For detailed information on how to multiboot your device visit this link "Multiboot Kernel (CosmicDan)" you can also get more information about multibooting here "Multiboot Guide and Help".
Q9: How do i install a custom Kernel? To install a custom kernel you will need to have already unlocked your Boot Loader. You can refer to the "Flashing a Custom Kernel" Section of "Flashing a Custom Kernel and ROM" for more information.
Q10: What is a custom Recovery?A custom recovery is required for installing most custom ROM's, Xperia 2011 devices do not have a recovery installed by default. You have the choice of 2 recoveries currently, TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and CWMR (Clock Work Mod Recovery). Most kernels include CWM by default but some do have TWRP aswell.
Q11: How do i install a custom Recovery (CWM or TWRP)?To install a recovery your can either flash a custom kernel with the recovery already installed (Refer to above question) or use this "x-Parts CWM Installer" although it is in the ARC section it will work find on the Xperia Play.
Q12: How do i install a custom ROM?The first thing you should know is that all Xperia 2011 devices including the Xperia Play are unable to flash the kernel via recovery and therefore the ROM And Kernel are installed separately. To install a ROM you will need a recovery installed on your device. You can refer to the "Installing a custom ROM" Section of "Flashing a Custom Kernel and ROM" for more information.
Q13: How do return my device to Stock? The first thing to do would be to follow the "Flashing a FTF File" Tutorial. If you unlocked your boot loader you will also need to flash the FTF from "Relock Bootloader". This will put you phone back to stock ROM and Re-lock your boot loader.
Q14: What Rom/Kernel Should I use? (Question not to ask)Please don't ask questions like this. This is down to you to decide. Try some ROM's and Kernels out and stick to the one you prefer. Don't forget you can install 4 ROM's at the same time using Turbo Kernel.
However You can find "everything you need to know about the Xperia Play here, It includes a list of most recent ROM's, Kernel's and more."
Q15: Whats the Best ROM/Kernel for Battery Life/Gaming/Performance etc.? (Question not to ask)Again these are not the sort of questions you want to be asking. Try some out and see what you like and how each performs for your needs.*

[Kernel] SEtweak

SEtweak kernel for Xperia S.
Intro:
I know I failed last time (with Play - it was stolen) and left development. But let's be serious this time.
Since it'll take a bit to set up everything again, I've taken DooM's ramdisk (hope you don't mind) for the first test.
Note: I don't have the device so I can't test it. If you want to, you can donate via Donate button on the left.
Sony finally published everything we need to build kernel.
Due to some possible bootloader problems, kernel might not work.
Features:
Codepage 852 (purely selfish reasons )
NLS UTF-8 (Native Language Support)
NTFS support
TUN/CIFS support
Default governor set to 'ondemand'
Prerooted
init.d support
Coming soon:
More governors
Recovery
Download: be patient
Best regards,
Blagus
Cool.
Ive unlocked my bootloader already so ill test it for you.
Im not rooted yet tho. I did have the rooted rom installed form another thread but i was having issues with app crashes so i flashed the stock .67
Hi there,
I hope the kernel wil be pre rooted and have some nice features....
I will try it
I need someone to send me kernel.sin of 6.0.A.3.62 firmware.
Hi there,
You can download it here : https://github.com/DooMLoRD/Xperia-2012-Official-Kernel-Sources and if its not there you can find it here http://eddy.uni-duisburg.de/bin4ry/L...1257-3921).ftf

Don't bother Blagus. At this point, you can't really use a custom boot image due to a bootloader bug.

Really? Any more info on that?
It seems to affect some units at this point, I know of others which can boot just fine though using the instructions provided by Sony. This is the one thing preventing CM9 porting at this point.

hi defer,
what is the bug exactly?
i faced some issues yesterday when testing out kernels on a users device...
whenever we tried hotbooting the kernel (fastboot boot kernel.elf) the bootloader always returned "Wrong range" even though i used exactly the same ranges as given by Sony....
the test kernels are posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23868276#post23868276
if anyone wants to try them
I don't know the specifics of the bug, but it's in the bootloader it might be anything really, no way to know. However, what happens is that the bootloader is able to boot signed kernel.sin files but not the unsigned kernel.elf

[Q] How to root and flash

I know these threads of newbies can be annoying, since it's been posted a million times, but please hear me out.
First I just tried to root my device but I don't think it worked, since I checked with root checker and it says my device isn't rooted. I used this method:
Download
DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit [v2.0](zergRush Exploit)
You made need:
Xperia Play [Neo Arc] AcroIS11 Acro S0-02C USB Drivers
Before You Begin
(1) Make sure you have installed ADB drivers for your device.
(2) Enable "USB DEBUGGING" from (Menu\Settings\Applications\Development).
(3) Enable "UNKNOWN SOURCES" from (Menu\Settings\Applications).
(4) [OPTIONAL] Increase screen timeout to 10 minutes.
(5) Connect USB cable to PHONE and then connect to PC.
Instructions
(1) Download the attached file, extract it using Winzip.
(2) Proceed to the folder where you extracted the contents then execute "RUNME.bat"
(3) MAKE SURE to read and follow the instructions on the screen! That's it!

It said it was rooted successfully but my rootchecker didn't agree
Is there another "easy" method to root my Xperia R800at play?
---------------------------------------------------
And for the Custom Rom... I have been reading a lot on this forum, but I'm still a bit confused so please bare with me.
First - I've read that the ICS and JB don't really do justice when it comes to the gaming, and that Gingerbread is the best software for when it comes for the full xperia play experience?
Second - I would like a Gingerbread custom rom that's very very stable and smooth. My Wifi connection is a bit unstable so I'm hoping that a custom rom might fix that.
Third - Can someone provide me with a download link for the best Gingerbread custom rom, and the easiest method to put the rom on my device?
I also find that some games like Grand theft auto and Fifa are really laggy at times and after gameplay my phone really slows down, doesn't matter how many times I use the task manager to kill all the application. I've already updated to the latest official software of at&t but I'm not really satisfied.
I'm sorry if I wrote to much or demand to much lol, but please help me out. I will like the crap out of you if you do:highfive:
Can you guys please help me out here......
You should download flashtools http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351299 in that post you can see the link to download.
the rom that I use is jellyzeus, is a JB rom, it's so great fast, no lag here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021373
you have to flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1817548 version 7a works fine.
If you want a ICS rom you should try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1854682 This rom is so great, unoficial rom from sony, everything works on it.
Sorry for my English, hope this help you.

And it isn't hard either to not be a ***** about it. Posts like this are completely useless. Don't you think I've done that? Or anyone else that's a member of this site? How do you think I've found this site in the first place? A lot of the information on the internet is very vague, especially for noobs. So forgive us, for not wanting to **** up are newly bought phones, and for wanting explicit information.
Thanks to the guys above. Y'all are flawless!

Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

I've made this thread to help people who have some problem and make new threads instead of searching the common questions. In my next post I will start posting the FAQ's and since it's not possible for me to be online 24/7 so it may take sometime but i will keep updating it. And if anyone have some doubts feel free to ask. BTW Ifeel free to PM me if you have some ideas or nice questions to improve this thread
Q1: I get bootloop after installing a custom rom. What is the problem?
A: Have you done everything correctly?
-Firstly post your problem in the ROM thread as the devs there may help you better.
-Check your mobile compatibility with the ROM
-Check if you have installed the correct kernel for your ROM.
-Check whether you have done the correct wipes as mentioned in the ROM thread.
-Some ROMs require formatting system. So if it is mentioned in main ROM thread then you must do it.
-Some releases may require stock rom first before flashing the custom rom. So flash the stock rom and then the custom rom over it.
If nothing works just download the stock ROM for your mobile and flash it using flashtool. This may solve your problem.
Q2: Can you suggest me the best ROM or kernel or something like that for my smartphone cause i'm really lazy to do a bit of searching...?
A: First go here and beware before asking these type of questions again otherwise you will end up with a bunch of people like me mocking you and nothing else.
Q3: I have rooted my phone successfully, now how can I install CWM (ClockWorkMod) Recovery?
A: If you have locked bootloader you can simply install CWM using an app called x-parts from Google Play and install recovery from it. And if your bootloader is unlocked you can simply flash a custom kernel with CWM or some other recovery present in it.
Q4: I have a problem with this ROM and what should I....
A: It's a ROM specific question, better post it in the ROM thread. They will help you better.
Q5: My phone can't boot in fastboot mode. Please help me!
A: Firstly check that fastboot is enabled on your mobile and the correct procedure to go to fastboot mode is by holding back button and connecting to computer via USB.
Q6: WIFI is not working. What should I do?
A: See if it is listed as a bug in the specific ROM thread. If not try custom kernels and if you can get correct WIFI modules flash them. If you're lucky WIFI will work.
Q7: How do I install custom rom/kernel on my mobile?
A: Mihahn has worked really hard on making his guide not because he wants some people asking again and again the same questions instead of using a bit of the "SEARCH" feature.
Q8: What is the safest way to root my phone or unlock its bootloader?
A: There no such thing as safest way. If you do everything correctly you will be successful in rooting you phone and unlocking the bootloader and also Follow this .
Q9: How to activate MSC(mass storage mode) on CM10?
A: Though this question is of a particular rom but still I've listed it here since many people asked this question. Just go here, thanks the person and perform the steps correctly.
Q10: I did an OTA(Over the Air) update after unlocking bootloader. Now my phone is dead, what should I do?
A: Just go to this thread, thanks the person. Refer to section 6 and download the unbricking package from no.16 of XX.Downloads section, perform the correct steps and most probably your phone will be back to life!
Q11: How do I unlock my bootloader if it says Bootloader Unlock Allowed:No?
A: No one has actually got a 100% working solution since it is because of your simlock, thus you may have to pay for it. You can try WotanServer or Omnius and if you're lucky it will be unlocked and fastboot might be enabled.
Q12: How do I OC(OverClock) or UC(UnderClock) my phone?
A: If your kernel supports the function and if your ROM has inbuilt option for the fuction then you can do it directly from ROM or else you can buy/download apps like SetCPU for your phone and can use it easily to OC, UC or change governer of your CPU. *Playing with your CPU is at your own risk and if you go anywhere wrong your phone might not be able to recover(permanent brick). So if you are a newbie(noob) just stay away from these things*
Q13: How much OverClocking is advised for my phone?
A: Though there are some kernels which provide Over Clocking from 1.6-2 GHz(GigaHertz), but still you should not overclock above 1.2-1.4 GHz for daily use or else your CPU might burn, turning your phone into permanent brick. *I personally do not advise overclocking at all so do everything at your own risk.
Q14: How do I partition my sd-card?
A: Follow this very nice guide given by sayhellotwoheaven. Don't forget to THANK him.
Q15: How does Thanks Meter affect my profile?
A: Thanks Meter actually is not useful in becoming Recognized Contributor/Themer/Developer. It is actually the appreciation you get on you works. Thanks Meter has been made so that members of XDA stop posting just THANKS on threads and thread could be clean and helpful.
Q16: How to be a Recognized Contributor/Themer/Developer?
A: Recognized Contributor is a role intended for members who produce some of the best original and helpful guides for users, as well as helping other users who have problems, in a friendly manner. Recognized Contributors will get a custom user title and the faster ad-free XDA template, as well as access to developer tools currently being created. Any Senior Moderator on XDA can add Recognized Contributors, should you feel deserving of this title.
Recognized Themers are those users who work (often tirelessly) on designing new theme graphics and user interface overhauls for ROMs. Users who aspire to be Recognized Themers should be creating original graphics work for their themes being released, demonstrate a commitment to crediting other users’ work when applicable, and seek the relevant permission in advance from the original creator. Recognized Themers will receive a custom user title and the faster ad-free XDA template, as well as access to developer tools currently being created. Any Senior Moderator on XDA can add Recognized Themers, should you feel deserving of this title.
Recognized Developer, as the name suggest are those who develop really good ROMs, kernels, etc. Anyone who is skillful and publishes his own creation other that just copying and pasting can be termed as recognized developer.
For more details and how to apply for these posts. See this.
Q17: How to add framework mods like skipping track via volume button, small apps, CRT-off animation, etc.?
A: See this very beautiful guide
Q18: How to Decompile/Recompile ICS apk files?
A: Here is a great guide by stalin salu. Just follow that and you can very easily do it. Just don't forget to give him THANKS.
Q19: What are Governors and I/O Schedulers, etc.?
A: See this very good guide by zhanjia and anyone can know everything about them.
Q20: My ROM doesn't have x-loud and BE(Bravia Engine). How do I install them?
A: Simply download a very nice app know as Pimp My Rom from Google Play and install it and you can get many tweaks and options in that. It also has an option to download BE and x-loud for your ROM if it's compatible.
Q21: Does ChainFire support my phone?
A: The simple answer is download and use it. But if you are on ICS/JB I would recommend you not to use it as it may most probably result in bootloop. ChainFire is compatible only upto GB.
Q22: Why does my phone say Bootloader Unlock Allowed: No?
A: It's most probably a simlock. The mobile you bought has a simlock of the particular company whose SIM is being used. Normally the companies used to provide the unlocking code after sometime but now I think it won't be provided from now since simlock unlocking has become illegal. But you can break your simlock through WotanServer, Omnius or some local shops.
Q23: Can you tell me how does thanks meter increases with regard to number of thanks?
A:No. of Thanks and meter:

Q24: What are BB Codes and what BB Codes can I use in my thread?
A: Mainly every kind of text formatting that we do in XDA thread is governed by BB codes. Here is the list of all the BB Codes we can use in XDA and explanation of each code.
Q25: Is there anyway to mount my sd-card using CWM recovery?
A: Yes! Many versions of CWM support mounting sd-card through it. For that go to Mounts and Storage->Mount sd-card and you're done! But remember if you press back button then your sd-card will unmount instantly.
if u guys have Q/A let me know here ill add in the list

CM11 - KitKat
Hi!
I'm currently using the latest nightly version from CM10 on my Xperia Arc, and I was thinking about trying this new build of CM 11.
Can I install it using the CM updater? If not, every time I install a new update I'll lose all the data from my device?
Thanks.
Bluetooth connectivity and xperia home problem
Hello
I'm currently using arc s and have recently installed z1 honami custom rom
Whenever I reboot my mobile first thing that flashes on the screen after the entire reboot is unfortunately,Xperia home has stopped
and a new thing that I noticed is when i turn the bluetooth on it gets paired with the device but when they try to send a file to my phone it says connection failed
I have tried with other devices to checkout if it's my problem or the other device's!!
The same thing happens even with all other devices.
I've tried all the possible ways but can't find a solution
Bluetooth worked fine with other custom rom such as ultimate hd 5.0
Please tell a solution
Thanx in advance

and a new thing that I noticed is when i turn the bluetooth on it gets paired with the device but when they try to send a file to my phone it says connection failed

Hi!
I'm currently using the latest nightly version from CM10 on my Xperia Arc, and I was thinking about trying this new build of CM 11.
Can I install it using the CM updater? If not, every time I install a new update I'll lose all the data from my device?
Thanks.

its always better to start fresh if you move from one version to another, other wise some leftover data might conflict with the new version and you'll get lag and other issues with your device. but if they mention in their forum that you can just flash the new Cm11 on cm10 then it should not be a problem but i will got for the first one.

i had the same problem but my mobile was charging fine,
find any way to charge your battery, insert in another arc or some thing,
computer does not recognize it what did you do before that with your mobile ? ( Ex installed a new rom or something ) you messed up big time
if you do get to charge your mobile you can use another computer to flash official firmware again thats what i did used my another laptop and it worked over there for some reason.
Or
you can place an rom on your sd card and flash it via cwm but in any case you need that battery charge first.
I have a question, I have installed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545354 and can i flash back official firmware (tft file) ?

[Q] New G3 owner with some questions.

I checked several of the threads in the various subforums but since I am currently really busy (have the phone for 3 weeks and I am not using it cause had no time to check XDA ) if you are kind enough I have some questions that spending more time in the threads would probably answer themselves but alas...
A: If I root the G3 can I bring it back to stock without any indication it got rooted (I heard some phones have special logs that show if a phone has been rooted that survive the various flashes), in case I need to send it for service?
B: Should I go with the root method shown on XDA TV (which doesn't show how to install a custom recovery) or one of the one click auto batch scripts?
C: I think generally this question is not allowed cause it can lead to flame but which ROM would you recommend I try first? I need just a clean, smooth running ROM. Disclaimer: Avoid arguing with other users if you disagree with something they said, just state the ROM and if you want your reason for picking it and I will scroll through them and decide.
Much obliged if you care to answer them and apologies to mods if this breaks any rules.

A: You can always go back to stock using LG flash tool with no evidence of rooting nor like samsung's knox
B: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3072767
C: I personally use resurrection remix rom based on CM12 due to performance but if you want fully working G3 with no bugs at all I recommend my favorite rom CupaChups 4.2. Super fast stock base rom with some extra features.
P.S. I recommend you to instal Kernel Adiutor from the play store after you root your G3 and change the governor from default Interactive to Conservative. Cos from some unknown reasons the Interactive governor is bugged on all G3 and changing that will highly increase your performance speed and feel. This works with base and aosp roms also.
Hope this helps

Thank you, is there a problem if the phone is already on stock 5.0? Can I still root it with the same methods or must I restore it to 4.4.x? (A simple restore to factory blabla does it?)
Cheers

If you have a look around there's a one click method that works for all G3 variants regardless of software version that is here on the forums. You can use that, download the zip for your desired custom rom, install a custom recovery and then flash the ROM and you should be good to go. There's plenty of guides for you to use, and each custom rom thread should have it's own installation guide

Well to do it, it's very simple, if you're on Windows just follow up this link:
If you are running Ubuntu or an Ubuntu based distro on your machine the process is different, and it's more complicated for a new comer.
So in order to make it simply for the user i released this zip containing an automate script so just run Zenfone2Root.sh into a terminal window and leave it work.

Q8: I heard there is a WhatsApp group and a Telegram one, which one is the best? There isn't a best one here, but a more secure one yes there is one, and that one is Telegram of course. Q9: I rooted my Zenfone, i'm on stock and i want to update it. What to do?Don't worry your answer is covered entirely here
Q10: I have unlocked bootloader and i want to upgrade my stock ROMIf you are on stock ROM and you got unlocked bootloader you are able to update your phone only and only if you didn't touched any system files, like xposed, root etc.. In that case yeah you will end into a bootloop or the installation will even fails.
Q11: We will have Android M?Ok so, this was and it's still talked very much by the whole community... Nothing is confirmed for sure,we're hearing some news about the fact that Asus is actually working on it,but officially nothing was announced yet. But don't drop your hopes guys cause Zenfone 2 got released this year so normally the Android M upgrade will be for sure confirmed, but we don't just know when. A talk thread about this can be found here
Q12: What's the difference between dirty and clean flash?Maybe you will be heard this many times on the forum,or if you didn't heard well i will tell you what's this all about:
Basically dirty flash is when you flash a ROM by cleaning only cache and dalvik and by complete flash we're intending to have besides the wipe cache and dalvik also the wipe data. .
Q13: I saw Asus also released a tool to unlock the bootloader what to do?Yeah, this thing was also discussed by some users. Well if you're unlocking your bootloader by the "Unofficial method" made by us on XDA Asus will not have the possibility to track your phone (Warranty things), so if you're unlocking the bootloader with the Unofficial method Asus will not directly know that your warranty is lost but if you're doing it with the official method then yes.
Q14: I'm on CyanogenMod but i want to go back on stockNo problem if you want to go back on stock, just pick up the latest stock factory ROM from here: but for the fact that you're using the TWRP you will also need to modify the updater-script of your zip in order to fit and make you flash correctly the stock ROM so for that just head over here

This is an informative thread in order to don't make threads for already answered questions, and to maintain a bit the order around.
I will continue to update this thread as much as i can for all the users.
Hope that's help a bit the new comers with this device

Stock android on ZF2
Hi.
Thank you very much for the super informative post. I am going to buy a ZF2 and I want to check if it is possible to run stock Android in this device. This is more an option for me and not a necessity. I just do not like customizations such as ZenUI, HTC Sense, TouchWiz and so. I have chosen this model for the price vs functionality otherwise I know that I could go for a Nexus model or a Motorola device that run on near stock android.
Thank you again.
P. S. I have never rooted any of my android devices so far. I am not familiar with the process and I always have the fear that I may brick my device.
