Opinion about Galaxy Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey Galaxy Nexus community!
So, I'm looking forward to buy a new phone and G Nexus is the first one on my list due to price range. Do you guys think it's worthy to buy? I own a Xperia Play and I want to buy other phone because I rarely use the gamepad (and it makes the phone too thick and heavy) and I want a device that runs Jellybean smoothly.
Thanks in advance

Well... it depends on what you're looking for. Development device and a nice phone? I love my toro for that. Camera leaves something to be desired. Are you steering away from the Nexus 4 due to price constraints? I don't personally own one, but newer has to be better, right?

Newer is usually better.....USUALLY....the nexus 4 is a good phone but doesn't have LTE .....doesn't work with Verizon....and only has a maximum of 13GB of usable storage....as for the op.....I would wait a couple months if you have an upgrade as MWC and Google I/O are right around the corner....if money is a concern and you don't have an upgrade grab a galaxy nexus....it still got 4.1, 4.1.2, 4.2 and 4.2.2 before any other phones except the other nexus devices....and they're pretty cheap right now....as the person above me mentioned the camera is lacking a bit behind but it hasn't hindered my year with the device at all....good luck

I'm looking for a fast, beautiful, practical and durable phone that has active development, the camera is not something I'm really happy with on the Galaxy Nexus but I can live with it.
I would rather have a Nexus 4 but it's not easy to get one in my country and the price is a problem :\
Can you tell me how the screen brightness performs outdoors?

The galaxy nexus will most probably be my choice since it's a good upgrade from my phone and it fits my wallet.

Congratulations. you have made a fantastic choice.
I have mentioned this before, but the only issue i face with my Nexus is the camera quality and low sound output of speakers.
Since camera is not a concern for you, and sound can be improved using different mods, the GNex will be a great choice.
The screen on this device is brilliant. Although i have a matte finish screen guard, i am able to see very clearly in almost any light scenario.
And all the other points: Budget, active development, point to the GNex.
Do let us know once you make a decision.

The Galaxy Nexus is a work horse of a phone. Good decision, have fun with it.

ROMs and Kernels
Congratulations on your choice. When you get your phone you might be interested in custom ROMs and Kernels. Here's a source that might be helpful:

It's new so there isn't much there yet, but it has great potential.

What do you guys think of the One X????

I don't own a nexus but I considered buying that beautiful phone many times. But now I think I'm gonna get the HTC One X. What do you guys think of that phone? Any of you getting it?
It's a nice phone.....but not worth the upgrade from a Galaxy Nexus.
Tegra 3 ain't too great for starters. But luckily they have a Krait option in the One XL.
The protruding camera has poised to be a small problem also.
And it's just so damn expensive right now.
Will probably end up holding this GN till the next nexus device comes out as I just got it. Unless the SGSIII is too damn amazing to pass up.

But in all seriousness, don't think you'll find many people with the Galaxy Nexus who will dump it for a Sense device, a mere 4 months (at most) into owning the GNex. Just not that big of an upgrade, even if it was stock Android 4.

Cool I respect that. There is no doubt that the nexus is an awesome phone.
I'm not a fan of tegra 3 really, omap or qualcom preference. But the one x looks stunning. And I want HTC to sell a ton of these to get back in the game and mix things up.
Nexus always for me...
Camera is a lot better than I expected on the Nexus. Was expecting the worse, took a few snaps after updating to 4.0.4 and it's pretty good. White balance and color tones etc...are true and accurate.
In low light, there's a bit of noise but it's to be expected. Because it's 5MP can tell some shots just can't get all the detail when zoomed in and looking at the pics.
But the One X camera is a beast. The 4FPS is nuts, it's just continuous and stays in focus too for the most part. But it seems that it still isn't the best which is surprising. Just competitive with the other best camera smartphones.

Yea i'm over there looking at threads and replying and stuff.
Probably not now that I got a Galaxy Nexus. I was thinking about getting the AT&T version when it came out but I probably wont now. Doesn't seem worth it.
I might use my upgrade on an iPhone 5 or something or SGSIII depending on how the phones are.
Then sell one of them for the new Nexus in November/december
While the phone nerd in me wants the newest toys I know I would hate sense. I hear its gotten a lot better but I love plain Android. I tried miui and restored my back up 5 min later lol

I think One X is a significant upgrade:
1. cpu is almost twice as powerful
2. gpu is 2-3 times more powerful
3. camera is a LOT better accoridng to reviews
4. Display is apprantely the best on a smartphone ever. (this one may not be a very big deal for us but still a good upgrade)
5. Design is just awesome, seems a lot more robust and slim than gnexus.
When it falls short is the software. I've never owned an andorid phone other than gnexus so I don't know: do you guys think vanilla ics will be fully functional on this phone and when do you think it'd be available?
I'll try and get it when it comes to ATT

From my experience......AOSP on any other phone besides a Nexus is nice, but it just doesn't feel right. There are some small minor things here and there that just makes you want a Nexus instead so you don't have to deal with the little bugs.
It will definitely get Vanilla ICS eventually, idk how long....it looks like the One X will have a good dev community behind it. A lot of people are thinking it's one of the great phones ever lol
The CPU is better, but its literally just 2 more cores of the cortex-A9 which is what we're running also. And nothing is really utilizing it efficiently.
GPU is better but thats not hard honestly. Nvidia apparently isn't using any real new tech in it, they said it themselves somewhere. I'd wait for "Keplar" to be in it with Tegra 4 revision.
Screen is a toss up, it could be a lot better, and it might not...idk i don't have one lol. I have a feeling its nice, but idk if its a drastic improvement over SAMOLED HD.
Either way....best to know what Samsung does with SGSIII before making any decision. It might turn out like the SGSII and Sensation where SGSII just ended up smoking it. Though, the Sensation had a great dev community and definitely one of the largest outside the Nexus, and SGS series phones.

Totally agree
I'm usually on a one phone a year cycle with the Nexus phones, but since my GN screen is cracked I will probably jump on the SIII early summer and then sell that for the new Nexus and Jellybean at the end of the year. If the SIII comes packed with a bad ass Exynos processor then I'll definitely do this.
One thing about the nexus though, how strong is the screen? I mean it's not gorilla glass. Is it really resistant?
Definitely a great phone, i doubt ill be trading my Nexus for it though. i have convinved an iPhone user to buy it for his next upgrade so ill get to try it out

It is similar to GG in terms of scratch resistance, from personal experiences using SII and now GN. Sand seems to be the only thing that scratches it, so make sure u dont take it unprotected to the beach . it wont be as strong though, but under normal day to day conditions it should be fine, scores well in drop tests.

Too late to buy this?

I'm considering buying the Nexus now that it is 400 dollars but I'm not sure if I should wait for the next best phone. Suggestions?
Edit: I'm concerned that I will get a phone that has banding issues/purple tint. I've read a ton of threads about this issue and it is concerning.

A lot of us here will tell you that the next best phone won't happen until the next nexus and none of us know when that'll be as there hasn't been any formal announcement.
I've got my galaxy nexus a little less than a month ago and I have no regrets.
You could pretty safely buy this for $399 and hold onto it for the next Nexus. The resale price won't be much lower. Or just hold onto the GNex why not.
Got my nexus 4 days ago, and I'm really glad i chose this phone. Haven't experienced any lag yet, and I have been running the most heavy 3D games available for android.. so you should definitely not be concerned about performance.
It's also easy to root, there's lots of development going on, it has a big super amoled hd display etc.. this phone will also be getting android jellybean when it's released.
Yes, there is several phones getting higher scores than the nexus in benchmarks, but performance-wise, there's actually not many areas where this phone could be improved. I don't really see the need of quad-core cpu's yet.
So, yea... I totally recommend you this phone!
edit: If camera is one of the most important things you're looking for in a smartphone, this phone's probably not for you... personally I take like 2-10 pictures a week .. so I really don't care about the cam..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
It really depends on what you use the phone for. Do you watch movies more than you take pictures? Do you use the speaker to listen to music? That's just two of many factors you have to look at. Do you root and flash roms? Overall this phone is a good device should you over for some time. I for one get tired of phones and have to change every 5-6 months. I love the gnex but I think the camera and speaker volume could be better.

The speaker problem can be fixed with apps like Volume+, after installed it my speaker is quite loud. But the camera is really a concern.
I recommend this phone for almost everyone, the only exception is if you really need a good camera on the phone. This camera is average at best.
That said, I would buy this phone again today. The One X is really a temptation, but I know that being an Android geek that loves updated software I would regret to buy a not Nexus device. Did this 2 times and it was a pain in the ass, now I just buy phones from the Nexus line.
I am kind of in the same boat, lol. I just got the HTC One S, tho. I would like to switch to verizon for coverage reasons, but there seem to be issues with the 4G/3G connections. I played with one at the verizon store by my apartment, and it had a lot of issues. And I have read about the problems with data dropping, which it seemed to be doing at the store. I also love the loudness and clarity of the speaker on my one s. The one s camera has some fun things to it, tho. However I generally turn the pixel size down to under 5M anyway. Good luck with your decision. Maybe I will get the HSPA+ one and sell whichever one I don't like later.
I think I would miss having the MicroSD slot (even though I don't really use it). I don't have LTE in my area so that isn't really an issue for me. I'm slightly nervous about the display. I've read a lot about the banding issue that a lot of people have as well as the purple tint that others have. The prospect of fast updates sounds good (still waiting for ICS for my skyrocket...) but I'm not sure how much I really want the nexus.
The next best android phone comes out way too frequently. I personally wouldn't use this as a deciding factor. Do you like the gnex or not? Does it have features that will satisfy you? Does it have the community support that you want or need?

Just got my Sprint Nexus on Sunday and so far I'm psyched about it. I wanted a sexy looking device along with performance and the SG3/EVO LTE didn't have the look factor I wanted. I can sacrifice .2 ghz of a processor and don't find the camera all that bad on the Nexus. Plus Sprint was giving me 70 bucks for my Evo and 50 bucks through Google Wallet. So technically, after all is said and done, I'd pay $70 for the Nexus.

honastly you cannot go wrong with this phone, I love the freedom that it has provided to me with being a pentaband phone. You will always be waiting for the next best phone. Unless your looking forward to all the graphicly intense games in the pipline for tegra 3.
But if your a normal user IE social networking, email, music streaming, and casual gaming. This phone should not disappoint, look at it this way.
if your picking this up now, for cheap I can only imagine what next years nexus will be priced at around this time next year.

A nexus always has the latest OS and the Galaxy Nexus has few bugs... You really can't beat this device. The HTC One X is a bit better, but it will always be on par or behind on upgrades. So, if you upgrade every year, sure wait.... If you upgrade every 2, then go with Nexus, it'll take longer for it to feel like an old device due to quicker software updates.
I bought mine a week ago. No regrets. I spent a year on Windows Phone and couldn't have asked for a better way to cone back to Android.
I'd heard some complaints about they camera, but mine is very good. I do have the international version. No blurriness or off colors.
The phone is fast. Nothing else to say about it. No lagging or stuttering, fast app switching, beautiful screen. I noticed pixels on the Galaxy S Pentile display, but this one is beautiful.
Oh yea, I've left the phone stock. I'm sure I'll mod it in the future, but right now I haven't found a reason to. It runs exactly how I want it to.
I say buy the phone.

GNexus vs. S2?

Hi!
I just wanted your opinion of choosing between those two.
So I just sold my Sony Ericsson Arc S. It was a good phone, but since I'm addicted to my phone, and do everything possible with it(I hardly use computer anymore!), I decided to buy a dual-core phone!(Yeah, I'm always on the later era) Arc was way too slow.
Basically Nexus is 30€s cheaper than S2, but that's not a game changer.
I like the design of Nexus more. On the other hand S2 is more powerful. Nexus has bigger and better screen etc.
But one thing I appreciate the most, is the community. I've had a couple of Android phones before, and I've been pretty active here on Xda lately. I love flashing new roms and so on. S2 is the second most sold phone in the world, so I bet it has bigger community here, but quality over quantity.
Nexus has roms like MIUI and Cyanogenmod too. Also I see hundreds of roms in XDA. Anyway, I can't compare those two by looking at the roms they have, that's why I asked you guys.
It's such a hard decision... Please help!
BTW: I'm too cheap to buy S3 or ONE
And I'm European so I'd be only interested in the international version obviously! (No T-Mobile or Verizon etc...)
EDIT: I read that Nexus has more powerful chipset while S2 has better GPU? Is that correct?
I have both the nexus and the sgs2. And I'd say go with the nexus. The SGS2 is now my spare phone. Although specs wise the SGS2 other than screen resolution. On this note the nexus 720p screen can be the real deal breaker over the wvga screen on SGS2.
People can debate about specs all day but the Nexus is definitely way more fluid. Also you get all sorts of custom rooms and kernels to tweak the nexus to get that little bit more.

If you like a phone with an appealing UI with vanilla android and is super easy to install and try out custom ROMs on, go with a Galaxy Nexus.
If you want a phone with an ugly UI, Samsung's ****ty firmware yada yada yada, go with an S2.
The Galaxy Nexus also has HD resolution, bigger and better screen there's a ton of support ready for you if you ever need help. Also, pair AOKP with Franciscofranco's kernel and you won't believe how fast this phone is.

Thanks for answer!
I thought myself that while S2 may be a bit more powerful, it doesn't mean Nexus couldn't run all those nice games, it is anyway a dual-core phone.
What about the battery life?
So far I think I'll go for GNexus... It's more... exotic! and I really like the screen. I just need to be very sure about it, I have bought so many phones just to get disappointed at them after two months... Though these two are pretty high-end phones(for me anyway!)
Thank you too, Theshawty! It doesn't mean that while S2 has more roms, it's automatically better. Nexus has pretty cool roms as far as I know
And I'm pretty damn sure Google's support is more reliable than Sam's
The SGS2 has a worse screen, but a better performance because of it. The Nexus on the other hand, has double the pixels, but a worse performance. SGS2 will run games smoother, but it won't look as good as when the Nexus runs it. Performance vs Great screen.
Dev support is good on both ones, but Nexus will be much better long term compared to the SGS2.

You're welcome! Yeah, the ROMs we have so far here are great, and they're starting to pile up to become even more since afterall, this phone has a "developer-flag".

What a sad misconception. The S2 has AOSP roms just like the Nexus does. They have AOKP just like the nexus does, and they have awesome kernels as well.
What it really comes down to is screen size/resolution and size of the phone. Both will run ICS just fine.

Thanks to evrybody! I think I'll pick GNex... It's just such a hard choice... But it's a lil' bit cheaper and I really appreciate the bigger/better screen.
One thing that I wanna know the answer to, is, how long will Google support GNex? I reckon it'll get the next Android upgrade unless it's tablet-only, but what about after that? Time to move on?

Should I go for the Galaxy Nexus?

Hey guys/girls! So basically i had the Galaxy Note for some time now and really enjoyed the experience, however sold the Note in order to start saving up for a new phone. I got around $475 from the Note. So now i have cash in hand and will be able to save up some more over time. Here is what i want to know:
Should i go for the galaxy nexus or a high end device like the S III? If you recommend this please give your insight on the outdated hardware and what i will expect from it? Also please tell me about the Jelly Bean performance and does it make a large difference? Most importantly please tell me about whether the SGX 540 GPU and TIOMAP CPU will live up to expectation in future?

Don't do it. The Gnex is soooo outdated. Seriously though, you will have to make the decision on your own. Coming into a Gnex forum asking if it's worth it may not give the the info you are looking for. I love mine. I am sure many here love theirs. I personally I would pick up the Gnex now as it is super cheap and save you money for the next Gnex (hopefully coming this Fall/Winter).
Good luck! :good:
The GN is an amazing phone, coming from the HTC One X.
GN + JB + Butter makes for the best phone I've ever owned.

Honestly, if you want gaming performance and camera, I would wait it out until the next nexus (probably this winter if I had to guess). The GN's camera simply isn't the best on the market and the same goes for the gaming power. If you want the best cam and performance NOW, look at the HOX or GS3... keep in mind though that you are giving up much of what makes nexus great, like up to date OS, zero bloat, and a very strong developer community.
The HOX on AT&T for instance does not have a released source code or unlocked bootloader (unless you do the CID trick).
I'm pretty sure the GS3 also does not have an unlocked bootloader unless you get the "developmental" edition or something.. I haven't been keeping track.
The SGS3 isn't really better than the gnex other than camera.
The processor benches better, ok yeah we know krait does, but the gnex never lags, so why do you need a slightly better dual-core that benches a little better on paper?
2 gigs of ram... Yeah that's a gimmick, the SGS3 I had lagged compared to the Gnex because Samsung written ICS cannot compare with AOSP Jellybean.
Same screen size (basically) and same resolution. The only thing the SGS3 really has over the gnex is the camera. If 5MP "good" camera isn't enough, and you need the 8MP with better optics, then I guess drop more money for it, but I have used the SGS3, the HOX, the Note, and the GNex, and out of all of the above, the gnex is better for my money. Great performance, great development, no ugly ass home button, just a better overall experience.
But then you can't brag about how technically your processor is better and the extra useless gig of ram to keep 50 apps open, and the camera that still isn't an SLR so why bother

The only Galaxy phone to EVER have a locked bootloader is the Verizon SGS3, all others are unlocked.
For the price, you can't beat it. Unless you want to pay more than $500 for the next nexus then you can wait, otherwise the gnex is one of the best phones out right now IMO. Plus it runs everything smoothly. Also it was the first phone running JB so I don't know why you're calling it outdated.

It's the ONLY phone with an official JB build for months (probably this year)

Thanks for the correction :cyclops:
IF you have lots of money get SGS3. I think its better overall.
If you have money to buy SGS3 but you want to spend on something else and doesn't mind having 16GB of storage, decent 3D performance and decent camera just get the GNex no doubt! You can't get a better phone with a great software support on that price.
Nope steer clear these are horrible phones.

Basically the exact same phone as far as performance goes. It's up to you whether you want an IPS LCD screen, or an AMOLED.
Also to consider is whether or not you want LTE coverage as an option.
I personally would save my money and wait for the next generation of phones. I don't really think the GNex offers any significant improvements over the Nitro, except for AOSP JellyBean straight from Google.
I originally bought a GNex from the Google Play store and ended up returning it for a Nitro.
I could not deal with the display on the GNex. The whites were yellowish, and the colors were super saturated. The ghosting was also an issue. As soon as I turned on my Nitro I knew I made the right call. The screen is the best, IMO.
Nitro and GNex are competing products. Similar specs, similar performance, and nowadays the Nitro is even similarly getting CyanogenMod love.
In my opinion, it's a side-grade (not up, not down) to trade over to the GNex...Not worth the hassle of having to reload and reconfigure everything.
Keep the Nitro. With the Quad-cores hitting the streets now, by the time the Nitro hits its' 1st year anniversary, there'll be more solid choices for what to actually "up"-grade to.
I picked the Nitro because of the screen and the SD card expansion.
Ironically, I sold my Nitro a little over a week ago for $215 to upgrade to a Galaxy Nexus. I could no longer stand GB. LG then trolled me and released ICS less than two weeks later. Not sure it's worth the $135 upgrade, but honestly the Galaxy Nexus is the (slightly) better phone, and I love JB. But you can't do wrong with either phone.
About the only thing the Galaxy Nexus has that I really want is NFC.
Galaxy Nexus has the same performance as the Nitro HD but i prefer IPS over AMOLED, i think u should stay with the nitro HD.
thanks guys for all your input !
staying with the nitro and this community !
cheers !
I had this dilemma few months ago too. Ended up with the Galaxy Nexus, mostly because the top notch software support. I don't really like the AMOLED screen and hate the fact there is no SD card. Lack of LTE was another concern for me. Again, ended up with the GN only because of the software.
Last week I decided to see if I did wrong back then and got myself a P930 which I found at a good price. Software wise I can say I took the right decision picking the Nexus. But hardware wise, now I'd say I did not. Nitro's screen simply crushes Samsung's AMOLED pentile unit. LG's screen colors are right, screen is much crisper than Samsung's.
But now when Motor sees Cyanogen love, I'm hoping software advantage of Galaxy Nexus will be minimal. After flashing JB preview, P930 became a much better phone. Not as smooth as Jelly Beened Nexus, but I'm sure it will get there soon. Well, battery life on the nexus is at least twice as good, but there is no LTE, everything comes at price.
If you already have the Nitro, my advice is to not waste money on Nexus. At least not current one.

I would have to second the Nitro... What you give up on my GSM you get on the Nitro... I am awaiting my replacement...Been using my Nexus and the amoled is not as crisp or clear the speed is just not LTE worth...Yet I do like how you can esaily customize the Nexus I just put on CM10 and did Uber theme on it... Looks sweet...
Yet in having to decide I also think Nitro is the one up for a daily use phone.
Just a NOOB thought ...

NFC is still in its earlier stages and was proved to have several vulnerabilities. I would avoid NFC at this point of time.
keep the nitro but i'd pick up a used nexus if the price was decent, just to mess around with the softwares. must be pretty sweet to get a pure jelly bean running and all the little mods here and there, heh, for a flashaholic, i wouldn't get any work done if i had that nexus.
:silly::silly:
To be fair, you'd probably get the exact opposite advice from the Galaxy Nexus community. To get unbiased advice I'd ask your question in Android General or somewhere like that.
