By accident I encrypted my GSIII with a CM10 nightly and could not update the phone. I then was stupid and tried to install a new ROM from the external_SD because I could not mount the internal sd due to the encryption.
Now my phone is stuck on the Samsung Galaxy SIII load screen. Is there a way I can format the phone and re-install a CM10 ROM? I have ClockWorkMod Touch installed.
Thank you for any help or guidance. It would be greatly appreciated and even rewarded!
Have you tried to boot into CWM and do a factory/data reset? If that doesn't work, you might have to download the Stock rom, and use Odin to flash it.
Make sure you back up what you can, cause you might have to wipe your phone..

Thank you for responding. I tried the factory reset in CWM but it still hangs. Could I reformat the sdcard? Will that do anything in terms of allowing me to install a ROM or do I need to install a stock ROM through ODIN?
I'm new to this portion of ROMS so any guidance or links to step-to's would be awesome. I'm virtually phoneless right now because the new Galaxy SIII SIM doesn't fit into my old Galaxy S.
You'll need to Odin back to stock. And hope that works. Your steps seem to be unique. Let us know how/if you fix it for future reference.

ODIN to stock did not work. I still get stuck on the Samsung Galaxy SIII screen. However, I can still access CWM. Is there a way to reformat the sd card so that the encrypted drive is no longer there and then re-install the stock ROM?
Under mounts and storage -> you can format all partitions.

Hard way, I realized formatting SD card wont mark it as decrypted. Only a factory reset resolved my issue.

I think this has been said, but here are the steps I took to resolve this issue:
Odin back to stock
Boot into recovery
Factory reset from recovery
I originally attempted to use CWM to reflash Paranoid Android ROM. This would fail due to the fact that CWM could not mount /data and /sdcard (I believe due to it being encrypted).
After using ODIN and stock ROM, the system would still hang after putting in password to decrypt device. Booted into Samsung recovery and did a factory reset from there and it removed the decryption...

I'd like to regretfully confirm that these instructions work perfectly. I just lost EVERYTHING after a failed encryption process, but thankfully I was able to unbrick my phone after following these instructions. The lesson for everyone is to ALWAYS make a backup ON YOUR PC of your NANDROID backups.

I have a b/u of all my devices on drop box, google cloud, my ext drive for my network, AND my office computer. Yeah I know a BIT of overkill, BUT I never know which device I will "play with," and where I will play with it.
Can't wipe /sdcard or /data
I tried doing a factory reset from recovery, but I can't mount /data or /sdcard. Has anyone experienced this? I encrypted my data before applying an update. Now I can boot into recovery or download mode with CM10, but I can't wipe anything to go back to stock.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

you need to odin back to stock as has been stated. the stock firmware thread is in the android development section.
then you need to boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset.
get back to stock and wipe. this is the only way i've heard of this issue being resolved

I'm going to assume you're able to boot into a custom recovery (CWM). I persoanlly use TWRP, but either will work well for this. If you can't go through the root process again, based on qbking77's thread. Check out the videos and learn how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery. (always good to take a refresher course).
Here are directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Make sure the zip of the Rom you downloaded is on your externalSD Card or the root directory of your internal memory.
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's a certainty that at least one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though, as you never know exactly what might be left over from your old Rom (especially when going from 4.1.X to 4.2.X or vice-versa).
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache (can't hurt).
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
MOAR rom already installed. If, in the future, you flash an AOSP Rom, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms (such as the MOAR Rom) have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).

I could tell you but from what you're asking, honestly I think it's better not to and to force you to read a lot more. I am pretty new to this stuff too, joined this site in like march but I did about 3 weeks worth of reading before I rooted and flashed my first ROM. I'm not trying to be mean here but the question you're asking will be the least of your worries once you read a little more. I recommend you read this Q&A thread, it's also at the top of the Q&A forum.

Download the rom on your pc and transfer it to your sd card or internal sd card on your phone. Don't put the rom zip file in any folders as it's easier to find, commonly referred to as the root of your sd card. Power off your phone if your still on stock, after it shuts down hold the volume up button+the home button and then hold power button, this will take you to your custom recovery. First thing to do once in your recovery is make backup of your current rom, make sure you have at least 3GB free space on either your sd or internal sd, some backups can be even bigger, if you don't have space it should tell you. After your backup is done, wipe cache, dalvik cache, factory reset and then flash your rom, after it's done and you see it was successful, fix permissions and reboot...you should be good to go at that point. If all is running well you can boot back into cwm, select restore and only restore /data, to get all your apps and their data back, fix permissions again and reboot. You can use titanium backup or my backup root /pro to restore apps and data but personally I don't prefer those methods. If you have any issues, restore your backup and try again.
I see I was slow again as topherk said everything and then some lol...still posting this just in case it helps at all.
Edit; just to throw it out there I'll tell you how I do things, once your more experienced this could make flashing roms, kernels, tweaks ect, easier. I always make a backup first before I switch roms. Then I simply wipe cache, dalvik cache, flash new rom and fix permissions....reboot and enjoy, this is known as a dirty flash, some roms don't dirty flash well, some work great.
Also I always 100% of the time download roms, kernels ect straight from my phone, never had a bad download that I'm aware of, I don't check md5 sums, I just verify the size of the dl matches what I dl'd. My dl's go to my download folder on my ext sd card so when I go into recovery, I know to look in my download folder on the ext sd card.
Other things to note about dirty flashing if you choose to do it, figure out your rom issues quietly and it can't hurt to try dirty flashing if you always remember rule#1.....make a backup first. If you get stuck in a boot loop, just pull the battery, put it back in and 3 button boot to recovery and restore your backup.
Yeah, the main reason I prefer a clean flash is that when people dirty flash, any and all problems will not be supported by the developer. And since the person is asking how to flash a Rom, I doubt that they'd know what to do with a FC. I'd prefer if they would do a clean flash until they get used to it. I do all my app backups in Titanium Backup, and even then I have to be careful not to restore something that might mess up the new Rom.
Anyways, I really liked your advice with the backups: if you're ever stuck in a bootloop, you can just restore your backup. I recently tried out a new Rom that I wasn't too fond of, and in a few minutes was back to my LiquidSmooth. No sweat.

Hi, I will have my hands on this tablet very soon and want to use the Cleanrom that is listed in a thread here. This will be my first time doing this and have been searching around for a guide. I have read a few bits and pieces but would like someone to explain in a few steps so i can get this right the first time.

I havent installed anything yet as i will be receiving it for christmas. Not 100% sure on process so was posting here hoping someone could explain the process a bit more in laymans terms as this will be the first time i will be doing this. i understand you have to root the device so you can change the ROM, wasnt sure on what to do after that.

All you need is to Install Custom Recovery to change ROM, that will allow you to do anything you want with your device (such as System Backup/Restore, installing .zip packages, and etc.) read thread about TWRP so you can find everything you need to know.
But notice the fact you'll lose your warranty installing custom roms, as I know there is no way to change warranty bit back to 0 yet.
All information you need to know about Custom Roms is already there.

Make sure you get the right version, whether Quality or Exnyos. I had a freeze until I got the right version.

Build says CleanRom 1.0 but all apps are still present
My build says CleanRom 1.0 but I still have all of the apps that others say are removed such as Sketchbook. My note was rooted using the AutoRoot file with Odin and then the stock recovery was flashed. I then used the twrp 3.0 file and booted into recovery. I then installed CleanRom (without reset per instructions) and the device rebooted and everything worked except all of the apps were still there. I then tried to re-flash CleanRom and perform the wipe but I then got stuck on the Samsung splash screen to no avail. I booted into recovery and tried re-flashing the CleanRom zip to no avail. All I could do to get this thing booted was to flash the auto-root file again in Odin, re-flash twrp, and install cleanrom again from the recovery but all of the apps are still there. Before I did any of this I had a bunch of the bloatware either frozen or uninstalled in Titanium but now some of those apps show lines through them in TBP. Either way, my device is showing CleanRom 1.0 under the build but I really don't think it is... any ideas on how to fix this?

my tablet is rooted but after the rom flash ,when i reboot ,just after the "galaxy note edition 2014" logo there's a black screen
the only way to repair is to flash with the mk1 stock rom after or to restore my old version saved with TWRP

Before flashing your rom perform a factory reset in twrp and format /data. All your apps will be deleted and you should be fine if you are stuck on the samsung boot logo it might help to boot into recovery and format /cache and dalvik cache

So, I did the factory reset in twrp and then formatted the data. Naturally, everything was lost but when I went to install CleanRom it was no longer on the internal memory due to the format... but I did copy it to the Ext SD Card. MY problem is that twrp won't install the zip from the sd card. Each time it says its unable to mount "/data" even though I'm going into "advanced settings" and placing the check mark. I re-flashed twrp and tried using file manager to move the file to the internal storage but came up with the same problem. Also, I can't place the check on mount data for some reason. Now, my tablet starts to boot up but hangs on the samsung screen before the boot animation. Basically, its like there isn't any firmware on it and I tried re-doing the auto-root and stock recovery but thats a no go as well. Is this thing toasted?

Boot into TWRP and click "Restore Back Up" (Cannot remember exact verbiage) . Find where it says internal storage and press it and it will switch to a drop down and you can choose "External SD" Then go back and and it should be going to External SD instead of internal SD when you select install
Make sure you factory re-set. For safety, I advance wipe but I don't think that is necessary.
You may need to re-flash recovery if you're unable to access it.

Your device is not toasted I always have the Rom zip on the root directory of the device so formatting /data will not affect the rom zip. If you cant get it working then you might need to flash a firmware via odin and after that copy the rom on the internal root directory. Resetting your device should not format the whole internal storage so you can install the rom afterwards. Good luck mate

After the holiday (and many stressful attempts) I was finally able to re-boot the device and get past the splash screen. Opening Kies seemed to "kick" past the splash screen even though it said my device wasn't compatible with Kies. Anyway, I flashed the stock recovery, wiped, reset, flashed original firmware via Odin, flashed TWRP again, and then installed the CleanRom zip. Phew... it's FINALLY over with no issues and running smooth. I think the problem came in with TWRP not wiping correctly even though it said it did. I do appreciate all of the help and advice as you guys are life-savers!

When I installed with TWRP 2.6.3.3 & 2.6.3.1 I got the write permission denied and then I tried with 2.6.3.0 it got hung while installing CleanRom 1.5R2. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Thanks
First Yes i have searched and i found several posts but none had enough information or ended up with directing the op to the de-brick thread I feel its not bricked and I don't want to run into more problems.

using 4.2.1 Rom
using CWRM 6.0.3.1
I tried to encrypt my phone (don't ask me why as if i could go back in time i wouldn't have tried it)
So first it would only boot to the screen that says encryption failed factory reset and try to encrypt again and has a restart button at first nothing worked even the Rom UI would crash at this point and the restart (software button) on the screen was unresponsive. I then went into recovery and tried to load a recovery and it could not mount /data as it read as it was secured. So i went and formatted it and was successful with restoring a backup Although as soon as it booted again it brought me right to that same screen?
I am going to try to start over with a new Rom installation while i wait for a reply.
I just hope i can get it done simply without Odin or connecting it to my PC as i tend to not have good luck with that. IDK whats up with my PC.
Anyway if a simple Rom install fixes it ill be happy but something is still there saying i want to encrypt it or IDK what is causing it to go to the encryption failed page when I have formatted all but /sdcard (i was afraid to unless I'm told) I know everything else is fine /system /data /cache are all replaced by the Rom so i know its OK to format them but /sdcard is all the data on the phone so I'm not afraid of losing music ringtones pictures etc if i do need to format /sdcard but i want to be told i should first
also please ask me for any in formation you may need i want to fix this and also i need to go find a Rom so also a Rom suggestion is fine too (if its going to help otherwise I'm going to find a basic 4.2.1 Touchwiz based Rom and flash that

THANKS I tried flashing a fresh ROM after formatting everything now im in a boot loop and as it not bricked (soft bricked anyway) i was hoping a new route66 via Odin would be my main option.
Now as far as it goes on updating to 4.3 what file should i flash via Odin? should i use T999_UVDMD5 to get it working again then use T999_UVUEMJC to update to 4.3 (how i went from ICS to JB so would it be the same to KK ,4.3,) or can i just do a single Odin to T99_UVUEMJC so I u can be ready to use 4.3 roms. I just want to make sure because if I don't' have to use a 4.13 route 66 ROM to com back from this boot loop can I skip the step of using Odin to UN soft brick my 4.1.2 and go straight to 4.3.
I just want to know the best way to go about eventually being able to load 4.3 roms on this phone more because they are easier to find (as in more developed at this time) and to be update

Never EVER flash UVUEMJC. Let's first get you back working with UVDMD5. Once that's achieved, I will get you 4.3 by another way.
For now, If you are right now on that bootloop/softbrick with just the UVDMD5, then great. If not go back to recovery, factory reset and wipe the cache and Re-flash UVDMD5 via Odin. This time, in Odin, make sure to uncheck Auto Reboot.
Once Odin has succeeded, Flash a custom Recovery such as TWRP via Odin. After that is done, reboot to recovery. Wipe Dalvik and Cache and then reboot normal.

Hey everyone so I took my phone out of my pocket and it was stuck in a boot loop. I tried taking the battery out, volume up + power + home, volume down + power + home but nothing. I've tried booting it also without a battery.
I have Quantum running on my phone, and have never had any problems. The occasional restart but now my phone won't even get to the home screen. I get just a boot loop with normal sounds, and then my LED begins to flash. Then it just loops again ..
Don't really know what to do.

Now that I have flashed to factory, I am stuck on the glowing samsung logo.. I have to tried factory reset / wipe but still nothing. Download mode is still working.

What is on the phone's screen while the device is detected by Odin?
There are a couple of notn-standard images that will actually function as download mode, allowing you to reflash a custom recovery. And then, hopefully restore a nandroid of your rom.

I get two options for either volume up and volume down. After pressing volume up I got the android with "Downloading Do not turn off target"

I agree with dawgdoc. Use Odin to reflash the latest version of TWRP, or the custom recovery of your choice. Uncheck auto reboot before you flash. Upon successful flash when it says reset in the status window unplug USB then pull the battery. Replace battery and try to boot to recovery with vol up + home + power; keep holding all three for a second or two after it vibrates until you see the blue text for booting to recovery (hopefullly)...
Then restore a nandroid backup, or load CM 10 or 11 on a microsd and flash that.

Using the same battery but now I can't get into recovery at all. I get the little blue text in the top left hand corner but I can't get to recovery.
Edit: Just realized I used the wrong TWRP for my phone. I redid everything and now I can get into Recovery mode. Going to try and put a rom on my device. Will be back shortly with an update.

So I keep getting a bunch of errors with TWR. I tried installing AOKP but got stuck at a boot screen again, and after trying to wipe my phone I get an error message saying "Failed". Now I'm trying install Quantum again but get an error message saying "Zip file is corrupt". T__T
Going to try another rom..
Update: I've tried Quantum again and it finally installed but now I'm stuck in a bootloop again. This is so frustrating ...
It seems like you are on the correct track. Don't give up.
Hopefully it is not a matter of the internal sdcard going bad.
If you continue to have trouble you might consider reflashing the bootloader and modem that the phone is currently on, or a newer one.

Installed Clockworkmod to see if TWR was the issue and still I'm getting boot looped. Is there a clean start from scratch method I can do that guarantees a fix for this ?Although I didn't get any errors with Clockworkmod just getting looped again. I haven't tried anything with the bootloader and modem. Is there a updated tutorial on this? I can't find anything

Couple of thoughts:
Is there any chance that following the tutorial in your original post you tried flashing a ROM image using Odin that had a bootloader different that what was on your phone when it was working normally? If so was it an older or newer version.? If older, then reflash the newer one that was previously on the phone, along with its matching bootloader.
It could be that a full wipe before trying again to flash the ROM would be what you need.
If the wipe doesn't work you may need to flash a stock based ROM and then go back to Quantum, or whatever you choose.

I honestly don't remember .. Any tutorials on doing a proper full wipe for my device? I did try initially flashing a stock based rom, but I'll try it again with Clockwork.
Also, how do I know which bootloader is correct and which files to flash if I can't access the info through my phone. I swear half of these damn tutorials have broken links and only spam files. I don't know what to do since there's so many damn options... I'm ready to throw my phone against a wall.

You still have download mode and recovery working, so there's still some things you can try. Don't smash it just yet.
I know how feel about searching for information on this phone. It's either fragmented and spread across a dozen forum posts, or you find stuff from tech websites and whatnot that is really dated. To make matters worse, some of the changes Samsung made to the more recent bootloaders made those dated articles and forum threads downright dangerous (stupid Knox and efuses). There are plenty of landmines and some bear traps out there.
Since TWRP is still functioning you can check what bootloader you're using; it's good to know if you aren't sure. I think you could do this on CWM too, but you'd have to use a computer and adb shell. Might be easier just to flash TWRP 2.8.5 back as your recovery if you don't already have adb and drivers set up on your computer. Boot into TWRP and go to Advanced -> Terminal Command -> the Select. In the command line enter:

getprop ro.bootloader
That will output your bootloader. Report that back here. It is not safe to flash any firmware updates with Odin or custom recovery without knowing your current bootloader version. Flashing wrong, downgraded, or mismatched firmware is the #1 way to brick this phone and it can be hard to recover from.
Was your storage encrypted when you were running normally?
The usual clean flash procedure for TWRP is this: Pick Wipe -> Advanced then tick dalvik cache, cache, system, and data then slide to wipe. These wipes will not touch files stored in your internal sdcard. Once those wipes are complete you're typically set to flash your new rom and Gapps, but...
If the rom zip you're going to flash is loaded on an external SD card you can also format the internal SD, also under Wipe. This will erase all your pictures, user data, etc stored on internal sdcard (you've been warned); it will also erase the rom you're going to flash if it is stored there. Do not format the internal SD if you aren't using an external SD card, or you'll have a blank phone with no rom to flash. You can recover from this with adb, but it can be tricky if you aren't familiar with it so just don't do it . The way your phone is behaving (spontaneously bootlooping in your pocket) I would consider formatting the internal storage, provided you have an external SD available to flash files from after formatting your phone. Any files that you must save on internal storage you could move to external SD with TWRPs file manager.
If a good clean flash and possibly fixing up your firmware doesn't cure it, I've heard TWRP and Odin just aren't as thorough as a full wipe in the stock recovery. Loading stock recovery and doing a factory reset in it might not be a bad next step, but check on the firmware and make certain you do a proper clean flash before you resort to stock recovery.

Thank you for the information. It's good to know that me being unable to find a solution wasn't just due to my frustration.
My bootloader is: I747UCDLK3
I did do the same type of wipe but all of my roms are on an external SD card. I was under the impression the internal storage was wiped completely. I currently have Quantum / Gapps / Kernel all stored on the external SD. At this point whatever it takes to get my phone working again will do.

LK3 is a pretty out of date bootloader, and in this case that might be a good thing.
You can go to sammobile.com and download the full firmware for your phone and flash it with Odin: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-I747/
For reference the newer firmwares (MJB, NE4, and NJ1) cannot be downgraded, any attempt will result in a brick. On LK3 you are safe. Repeat, don't try this at home unless you know what bootloader version you have.
This will Odin your phone back to pure stock Jellybean. This used to be the go to method for fixing screwed up S3's before Samsung started bricking us for downgrading the firmware at version MJB.

Alright I'm downloading this now. Assuming this works, should I do an OTA update then root or am I safe to root the device from odin as soon as this bootloader is installed?
