[Q] Rooting to uninstall Samsung's crap - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The only reason I want to root my Note 2 is to uninstall Samsung's crap. Allshare and ChatON come to mind, but there's probably more.
I have a few questions, though:
1. Is the toolkit mentioned here worth it??
2. Can I uninstall TouchWiz after rooting?
3. If I want a pure Android 4.2 OS (like a Nexus device), which ROM should I get?

All the answers to your questions DO exists in this forum. You can search as this way you ll make informative decisions and also know how to get out of trouble if you encounter any.

1. Yes the toolkit is amazing. I use it myself, it makes things very simple and easy!
2. If you use a Samsung ROM, you can't really remove Touchwiz. Touchwiz is in the messaging app, it's in the browser and it's in the pull-down menu, S-Note is Touchwiz, as is the camera. Touchwiz is a framework, a collection of apps, app settings, theme components, features... Touchwiz is not just the launcher. You can however de-Touchwizify your phone by using a different launcher, for example.
3. If you want "pure Android" like on a Nexus, what you need is an AOSP ROM. Look in the "original development" part of the N7100 forums.

He meant touchwiz launcher if I am not wrong.

In this situation you won't have any launcher and you won't have option to select any menu from device.
In such case you can do
login to web version of play store from PC with same a/c on device
and you can install any launcher from web, once it install launcher, you can again use your device normally.

[REQ] easy app uninstall

Ok, I have noticed on some alternative launchers (like launcher pro for example) if you drag an icon onto the "desktop" from the app drawer and hold it on top of the trash for a few seconds, it will prompt you to uninstall the app.....
Is there any way of getting this implemented into some of the custom roms around here? or is there something I could install as an "update.zip" to acquire this ability? I like the stock sense launcher so I don't really want to install and alternative launcher for this.....surely there is a way!

does it do what I requested? I've never heard of it....I'll have to look into it, thanks!
It's an app you click into it lists all installed apps so you can uninstall easily its not the same thing but its easier uninstalls

I'll pass then....if I'm gonna do that then I'll just go into the built in manager apps and uninstall it.
Thanks anyway!
Like I said, it is a feature that I like about launcher pro, but I don't want to install a different launcher JUST for that feature. Oh well, I'll just deal with the normal process!

[Q] Stock Launcher and TouchWiz Launcher

Hi guys. Sorry if this is a old and aready answered question.
Is is normal that if I can get to the stock Android launcher?
I can do so by two (2) ways:
1. Selecting a different Sprint ID pack (the non Samsung pack)
2. If I clear the setting to use the default launcher Samsung TouchWiz launcher.
Thanks,
bennzbennz
P.S. I have CREDO Mobile which uses Sprint for phone and service.
Normal... Sammy usually leaves stock launcher. easiest way to use it is clear defaults from twlauncher... Ive heard once you uss sprint ID you cant get rid of it without flashing... But some love it i guess...
Thanks

[Req] Splanner & Snotes on Google Edition?

Wasn't sure if this would be a Q&A topic or Themes..
Has anyone tried installing Snotes & Splanner on Google Edition?
I attempted to install Samsung Bloat, failed attempt, pushed thought fine in CWM, apps don't appear in the app drawer.

im pretty sure you need touchwiz framework for those, in which case they will never be on google edition roms, or aosp. But not totally certain.
yes, you need tw framework. and no nobodys ported it.
I tried to run Splanner apks on the 4.3 GPe, it would open without showing any calendar data then FC after a few seconds.
I assumed Google Calendar was for Gmail only and wouldn't work with my Exchange server--but I was wrong, it worked fine.

The Google play edition has stock touchwiz framework but is deblotted and has all aosp stock apps so just find the apps your looking for and move them to /system/app and reboot and they should work.

[Q] Note 2 TouchWiz 5x5 format

I'm a new XDA user and new to rooting so please bear with me. I am simply looking for a TouchWiz launcher mod (I think mod) that allows me to use a 5x5 app format. I have the SGH-I317 with build: JZO54K.I317UCAMH3. Can anyone help me out?
You just need a different launcher...
Give Nova launcher a try from the play store..
No root required ...and it gives you the options to grid up to 6x6 I believe ...
Otherwise ...to get TW launchers with grid changes you would need root and a custom rom most likely ...g

I haven't had the best experience with launchers from the play store. Had a go launcher before and it was just too much. I went with the root because I figured I could just mod the touch wiz or flash a better touch wiz Rom.

Never mind. I gave up looking for a mod and downloaded the Nova Launcher. VERY easy to use, customizable the way I like and very smooth.
Now the only question I have about having multiple launchers is... How do I prevent them both from running at the same time? I already set the default that when I press the home button, it goes to the Nova Launcher. And then in Nova Launcher settings "swiped away" the touchwiz launcher. But is it still running in the background? Do I even still need it? If I don't, how do I remove it? And no worries, I have a backup from before I installed Nova.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Once you swipe away the tw launcher you have set nova as default. Only the default launcher will run. I would not remove the old tw launcher as it can be a backup in case nova acts up. In other words, its good to have multiple launchers installed. Only one launcher is active at a time.

Any way to apply icon packs from Play Store?

Does anybody know if there is a way to apply icon packs from the play Store rather than the ones on the Samsung themes store? There are some amazing ones in play store.
Thanks
Edit : obviously I can install Nova or another launcher but I love touchwiz so rather stay on it.

I'm on my first Samsung phone and run into the icon pack problem as well. TouchWiz goes a little further than most overlays like HTC's Sense, or Asus's ZenUI, so its not as easy, not for me anyways, to just throw another launcher into the mix!
There is a free app on the playstore that allows you to use your preferred icon packs in TouchWiz without any other modifications! Two to be exact. The first app is Zedge. It has been a popular website for a long time to download ringtones, other items and they have an app on the playstore that basically does the same thing, but it also includes icon replacement in stock launchers that do not support custom icon packs. I would not prefer this one due to the fact that you have to choose from the apps built-in icons, not your own installed from the playstore. But as with all others, there may be a few things you prefer about the app besides the icons.
Second, "Awesome Icons" app on playstore. It has an icon option under menu, and it will automatically pull up a list of all your installed apps, and out to the side, all your icon packs, just pick and choose which icons your prefer for each individual app you are going to be using a shortut on a screen!
Only downside is, takes a minute or two. Upside, ability to use icons from icon packs off playstore of your choice! Plus, you can even mix & match individual icons for individual apps you have shortcuts for!!!!
Hope this helps!

As the first poster put it's probably easiest to install a custom launcher from the Play Store.
Nova Launcher guys.

Thanks for the obvious advice guys haha but I don't like 3rd party launchers. Love touchwiz so rather stay on it. But looks like there's no way to get third party icons on touchwiz.

Love touch wiz? Have you tried nova? So much more to customize and you can make it look the same and act pretty much the same. But better!
On that note every new phone or any time I have reset I try touch wiz. But end up trashing it due to its limitations
I haven't minded Touch Wiz so far actually but I'm sure eventually I'll switch back to Nova.
I have tried nova and dozens of others. I prefer touchwiz for many reasons which are not relevant to this topic. Let's not change the topic of this thread to convincing me to switch to nova ??

Good luck In your effort. If you find out let us know.
There is a reason people use a custom launcher. Icon packs are part of it.

There are lots of icon packs in the Samsung store. Not very nice though
@mahdibassam have you tried Awesome Icons? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.momocode.shortcuts&hl=en
I used it back in the day. Not sure if it still works or would work with the new touchwiz
Alright so I'm trying out Nova again. Is there any way to import my folders from the touchwiz app drawer? Already imported home screens but all apps are loose in app drawer.

Nova sure has a ton of customisability. But touchwiz is a launcher that grows on you as you continue to use it. Sure it might be limited in functionality, but there is a simplicity to it which nova cannot replicate. Plus it's made by Samsung for their devices, so why not keep it?
