my DHD is a killing SDCards machine... what to do? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok guys im sick of this.
My Desire HD is killing all of my SDCards till now.
every once in a time (like 2 months, 3 months)
my DHD just kills the sdcard that is inserted..
I try to plug the SD to other devices but it shows it doesnt work and it is demaged..
So everytime i go and buy a new SDCard and everything is working fine for 2 3 months.
2 days ago my DHD killed another SDCard and im preety much sick of this.. i forget to backup like a moron and it freaks me out.
I will go and buy a new SDCard, but I just wanted to know how to fix it. how to prevent my DHD kill another SD Card..
Formatting really doesn't matter, its something with the system..
I have wondered if there any thing i can do? for example buy a new SDCARD reader suitable for my dhd and replace it with the one i have now or something?
is there anything like that or something?
My DHD killed like 4 SDCards till now..
Thanks.

Well what brand SD cards are you using?
Also do you have any apps that constantly write to SD? Reason being is that flash memory has a limited amount of reads and writes. If you have some random app that is using your SD as its sandbox then that would explain it.
As for the brand, better brands tend to make cards that last longer.
Finally by formatting, I assume your referring to formatting the card after it dies, to see if it will still work. If not try that.

SD Card Randomly Appears Empty

Hey, I've had my Evo for a couple weeks now, and have recently started experiencing an issue that has been since happened quite frequently - the SD card will randomly appear empty, and I won't be able to add files to it. The only way to get around this, it seems, is to reboot the phone.
At first I thought my MicroSD card that came with the phone was defective, so I got Best Buy to exchange it today, but it just started happening again! My phone is rooted and running the latest RvU ROM, if that could have anything to do with it. Does anyone have any help, or is this just a hardware problem? (If it is, I'll just exchanged the phone at Best Buy, since I'm within my 30 days.)
Thanks!

Same thing for me. I tried Baked Snack and now Fresh 0.5.3, both have the same issue. Rebooting seems to work for a short time, but it always fails when I'm using programs that access the SD a lot such as the Gallery app or the Camera. As long as I stay clear of those it seems to hold up a bit longer, but I've had it fail while using Astro File Manager too.
When I was running The latest stock OTA I had no issues. I posted a similar question in the threads for both ROM's with no response yet. Because of that, I was beginning to think I had a bad card too.
I don't want to go back to stock. I just can't understand why this keeps happening.
Glad to know I'm not the only one.. I just wish there was some resolution to this.
I contacted HTC and they said it wasn't a known issue with the phone, so they said I should go to Best Buy and exchange it. So maybe our SD slots are just defective?
I have this problem too. It empties every day it seems and I need to reformat the SD card just to get it working again. It erases all my pictures and video and is very frustrating.
It seems to happen most often when I am taking a picture or going into Gallery, but has happened in other instances as well.
I hope HTC releases a solution that addresses this.
Also, it tells me in the notification bar that the SD card is damaged or unsupported file type or something along those lines.
And for the record, I am running a stock Evo.
i welcome u guys to my world.i been having the problem since day one tried everything and nothing worked.fully rooted, new radio, tried few roms, formated SD card, put in a new SD card and still that random SD failure.i reboot about 3-4 times a day and its really irritating.im afraid i might brake my evo one day or jus claim for a new one.

This is how I feel
I'm tempted now to go back to stock and verify, but I never had a single issue on my phone until it was rooted. However, it's possible that the problem was there and I didn't encounter it.
If I take that step and find that it is still an issue on the stock OTA, I will most likely try to get the card replaced or have the phone if it persists after a new card.
It's very inconvenient and makes the camera pretty unreliable. Plus I am a field tech, and I store .pdf's on the card for different devices. If the SD is frakked I can't be sure I can get to important paperwork in the field.
It's not the SD card.I have already reformated the SD and even put a new 16gb SD card but same issue everyday.

It's definitely not the SD card. I've formatted it, gone to Best Buy and had the SD card replaced, and used a different SD card.
It could be the ROMs we're using, but I've got a serious problem with this phone if using a rooted ROM does this.. And few other people are experiencing the problem. That leads me to believe it's a hardware defect.
My suggestion jus get your phone exchanged ASAP.

Yeah.. I've contacted Best Buy and they'll let me know when they get their next order in
Unfortunately I am am outside my 30 day exchange period so I cannot do that.
Well, I hate to break it to you guys, but custom ROMs is not the issue. I am stock and have had my phone since launch morning (June 4) and today, for the first time, my SD card contents disappeared. I was changing wallpaper when the default wallpaper kept coming up as the wallpaper. Note that the when selecting a wallpaper, the gallery showed all my images (cached?) but when I went to Gallery, nothing was there. I pulled the battery to reboot and now the SD card contents are back.
I had the same thing happen with me. I've also experienced other strange things related to the card. When hooking the phone up to my macbook, sometimes files copy and sometimes they don't (to the card). I was thinking it was an app corrupting the card. I've tried large files (100-200mb) and small files (like apks or old video game console roms). It seems that when data is going to the card very aggressively, it doesn't wasn't to copy. What I mean by aggressive is like 2+ dialog boxes of files being copied at the same time.
More often than not, it seems like lots of small files pisses the phone off and it parts me back by bowling the card. Lots of files means hundreds to thousands.
I saw this thread awhile ago but didn't look at it until today. At least I'm not going crazy or even maybe have a bad card. The cards never gave me any problems with the devices its been in for maybe the last 3 years until last week.
I gotta find another card to try. I am using sandisk 16gb. Maybe a different brand? Anyone try that yet?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'm doing a test now. I removed the suspect 16gb card from the phone and put in a 8gb card that has never been in the evo ever. I put the 16 in a sd adapter which goes into a usb adapter. All are official sandisk. I formatted the 16 in my macbook as fat32. I am now copying 8557 files to the card which size total is about 6.97gb. After a few minutes, I'm down to 6291 files to go and almost half way finished copying. I have not received one error message or anything that might lead me to believe there is something wrong somewhere. I'm starting to think there's nothing wrong with the card(s). It's the gd phone! I am so pissed now!!!! I keep looking back at the progress window and it's chugging along no problem. I am thinking about something tho. When I was changing cards I noticed that even when the card's lock bar was down, the card could wiggle a little. HMM. I'm gonna get a piece of thick paper and put it on top of the card and see if that helps make the card not want to wiggle as much when the lock bar is in place.
I will report back if I find out if it works or not in like 24 hours or less.
I don't think it makes any difference what rom you are running but I went to the one stock rooted "EVO_1.47.651.1_Rooted_stockrom.zip" one calkulin posted.

That link is just in case someone stumbles across this post later and wonders what I'm talking about.
So far, so good. I will give progress reports when I'm at work when I'm able to. I hope I may have stumbled across a simple fix to a defect.

I had the issue you guys are talking abou this is what I did to resolve my issue.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Just got a new SDHC card and simpleroot worked. The SDHC that came with my phone died. I placed a spare in there that was a 2gd regular micro and Hboot would not read the IMG for nothing.
If simple root is not working then it's the Sh!tty card acting up.
Happy ending for me.

For those who post before reading the thread, I am STOCK and this also happened to me. Battery out/in fixed the issue (for now).
So far I'm going on around 16 hours without the card screwing up. If you wanna try this, get a business card. Pull the card out of the phone. Lay the card on the business card at a corner. Measure about twice as long and normal width. Cut the business card. Fold the piece in half length wise so its the same size as the sd card. If it's too big, snip the non folded end of the paper and measure it so that its the same size as the sd card. Put the card into the phone and make sure its ask the way in. don't force it to hard. Then hold the card down and slide the paper, folded end first, on top of the sd and into the card bay. Make sure the paper isn't sticking out of the card well where the battery would be on top of. Gently push and lock the lock bar down onto the card. If you have to push firmly then the paper is too thick. Place the battery in the phone and put the cover back on. That extra bit of thickness added to the card I think is keeping it from scooting around in the sd card well and judging by the size of the contacts on the card, it wouldn't take much movement to get off the contacts. The folded end under the lock bar and the other end being held down by the battery I think is doing the trick. Just power down before removing the battery next time.
So far, this is working for me and I'm keeping my fingers crossed...
Just another update and bump off the topic...
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I agree the ROM probably isn't the problem, but definitely come back and let us know if the paper helped at all. It could just be that the SD card is loose.. It seems like sometimes if my SD card stops being read, but I leave the phone alone, it'll work again later, without rebooting, which is odd.

Risk of MicroSD wearing out if running Android all the time?

can anyone tell me if my microsd card will be able to last if im going to be running android everyday? because i heard that constant usage would result in a "fried" or worned out microsd
I think that is something to be worried about, but it's no different than running off a HD. Just be sure you are using a quality disk and you should be ok.
Every HD or flashdrive I've owned have failed at one point or another. So there's no point in really worrying about it because if it happens it happens.
I agree with the post above mine. But at the same time, its a mircoSD card, I spent 21 bux on 8g one, that i wont fill up anytime soon for personal phone reasons (the usb headset crashes my phone in winmo not risking in xdandroid). But at 21 bux you will be ok if the only thing that happens is your card gets fried.

[Q]HTC Desire HD SD Card Un-mounted Itself?[Q]

Hi XDA, seriously problem here that I really, really need to fix.
My father left his phone at home for the FIRST time ever today, his HTC Desire HD was one of the first in the UK, he go it the first day it came out. Today he forgot to take his phone to work, so I put it on charge for him and left for school. He came home halfway through the day to find a warning in the notification bar alerting him that the SD Card had been un-mounted. On seeing this he immidiatley blamed me, as any father would do to a son that enjoys messing around with electronics, however after taking a closer look I noticed that the phone will accept any card except the one that was in it when it unmounted itself at some point within the day.
The card that broke, is the origional Samsung 8GB that came with it (on Orange anyway ~ unbranded as first in UK FTW) when the Samsung Card is inserted all the stats about the card show as Unavailable, and the phone doesn't even recognise a card as being inserted, the same happens when the SD Card is plugged into my computer running Ubuntu & Windows. The card is not recognised at all, infact Ubuntu thought I inserted an empty SD Reader, and thats from Ubuntu! My dad has so much saved to that SD Card, like literally 5 months of holidays and things, I know he should have made back-up's, but is there anyway we could get this back. Thanks.
Hey i had a simmaler problem but i fixed it with my 16gb micro sdcard by takeing it out of my phone and pluging it into my lapyop and move all the files off the sdcard and onto the desktop and then move then back and then put it back into the phone and turn it on and see if it worked
If it didnt please responed and tell me the exact message it says

Hey Man,
I would do this, but my computer doesn't detect the MicroSD even if its in a SD Reader and plugged into my PC?
I had a similar problem... after i got my DHD, I bought a 16gb card for storage. I used this for about 4 months then I started to get the dismount messages every now and then, particularly when the card was being used a lot (playing music from it especially). Then a few days later it would do it after every boot.
My PC can see the files on the card, but trying to copy them off throws an error. I can't format the card either. I have since bought a new one and that is working fine, so it may have just been a faulty card.
It is HTC's fault, bug in the rom causes that. Your father should get an OTA update any time soon that will prevent it from happening again. You can format the SD using a PC and a card reader, it might just revive the card.

If you want to retreive data on the SD do not format or delete the partition.
Try to use a "data rcovery" tool first.
But if it's not recognise at all (like a piece of plastic and not as a non formated sd) all data maybe lost.
Usually OS corrupt the SD, it doesn't destroy it. If it's dead it not your fault or the OS fault. It's just no luck (try to explain this to dad ).
And beside I think its an San disc not an samsung, like I have, and try read it with partition manager. If not you can get a new one. And never buy Kingston cards, I had 5 of them and all died in few weeks.

Kingston makes the best and fastest cards, you have just abused them or something like that..

I do not think so, all Kingston was a waste of money for me, but my sandisc m2 micro sd are working fine for 6 years with no problem at all.

Well, both Kingston and SanDisk have worked well for me, and the price is usually almost the same. The difference is that Kingston gives absolutely awesome warranty, and the cards are fast has h*ll. My Class4 Kingston reads 21 megs per second, and writes 12 megs per second.

IMO the Kingston of England is not the same one in Finland, call me stupid but I lived in both countries and bought many Kingston memory sticks/SD cards from both

Loads of bootleg Kingston cards in England and I never noticed any kind of warranty on them while it was the most tempting thing on the ones I used to buy from Finland

Problems with my SD-Card, black screen, corruption.

Hey!
Iv'e had my desire for about 6 months soon, anyways ive had several problems.. mostly with the SD-Card. The first root I did back in January everything went fine except that I rooted with the wrong recovery so changed to Amon Ra because CWM didnt work for me.
I got problems with the screen that goes black for no reason, and when I press the power button to unlock the screen I only see the buttons shine up. Only solution for me was to take out the battery and restart the phone and the screen would work again. First time was not a problem to me, but it started happen all the time so I unrooted my phone, and the problem happened once more. After that it didnt happen again.
BUT! With the officiell RUU HTC Sense rom i started playing around with stuff like installing alot of APK for apps and stuff like that, in the end the problem would start to happen again that the screen would just go black? This was 2 weeks ago.
And Now I'm rooted again for 2 days and i'm loving it, only problem is that the damn screen went black 2 times, even when I formated the card. But it havent gone black today, just that the card for no reason told me to format it when I plugged it to the computer and I lost everything, something with a corruption and that the card was empty?
Back in january i switched sd card with my friend who has the exact same, and I didnt have the problem anymore and nor did he with my card... It's a Sandisk 4 GB, I don't know the class..
I've ordered Transcend microSDHC (Class 6) 8GB, and hoping for the problem to dissapear.
But would anyone like to figure out what the problem could be?
Thanks
screen black - i was getting that every couple of days on CyanogenMod
Well this kinda happens with root or without root... Does anybody know what the problem might be? I know it's got to do with something with the SD card.. I've ordered a new one, might that solve my problems?
In case it doesn't i'm going to unroot it and send it to service or something...
hi, just happens for the first time this morning... pull out the battery.
rooted 3 month ago with ext3 part
don't explain this, coul be the sd card, have read somewhere (don't remember) that ext partition on sd card could destroy it sooner that use to be. i'm looking forward that issue.
if i found sometiong i wil share it
No partitions since the day the n1table came out, now i got the the oxygen one and my card is pretty happy: no ext ftw
Thanks fragargon! =D I contacted Support, they told me to try the mobile without SD card for a while and see if it changes.
I got black screen also WITHOUT partition before, so partition is not the problem for me. Just the SD card I think...
Hi, have read that ext3 or 4 gives lot of I/O activities coz journaling of those extfs ... Since i can t get the logcat from that event it would be difficult to spot it. Hope this happens once more and able get logcat with adb

I dont really understand what that means bro but im not having problems now without the sd card, getting a new one tomorrow cant wait... also HTC said they would send me a new one for free lol, good service ey?
Fells like the phone is slower as hell on the original rom with HTC Sense, tried Launcher Pro and that was alot better but still slower. Is cyanogen faster that original rom sux really hard?
Thnx
hi mate, yeppp very nice service.
generally should considere that rom without sense are faster... don't know if cyanogen is faster but for sure faster than the stock rom.
as far as i known the faster rom is devnull but should like it coz a lot apk have been taken off. anyway i was still on the sdcard issu and spotted a nice tips for it.
look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010807
Ill check this out thank you, but I'm actually unrooted at the moment and I think ill be sending my phone into service for more information. But i'm getting my new card tomorrow or the day after, and then Ill see if the phone still has troubles or else im sending it to HTC!
Thanks

Did anybody find a solution to this?
I am really desperate to solve it... I pull the battery twice a day...
My SD regularly gets corrupted...
I have tried 4 different SDs. The one I'm using now is an expensive Sandisk class10 one.
Phone works find without and SD.
Re-flashed recovery, rom... nothing changed.
Anyone?
Thanks

SD or phone at fault?

I am trying to figure out whether it is my SD card or phone at fault.
The issue I am experiencing is that my desire sits at the carrier (O2) screen after about 5 days of use. I format the SD and install a new ROM and it works, again for 5-6 days then just gets stuck at the boot screen. I'm fairly sure it has to be the SD card but don't really want to buy a new one if that isn't the case. Has anyone else experienced this issue and was it resolved by getting a new SD card?
Its kinda hard to figure it out since the only information you provided is your carrier... and that you tried other unnamed rom
via xda app
Could it be a case of overheating which has affected many desires? Next time it hangs chill it down properly in front of an AC. Then restart.
My phone used to do quite the same thing. Sometimes it would just freeze and the only option was to pull the battery, or if it shut down because of empty battery though it would show about 17% actually, it would be stuck at the splash screen. I quickly figured out that sd-ext would get corrupt, and the only fix would be to format it.
When I finally got some time, I bought a new card and that seemed to have fixed it, but I cannot guarantee, since I was so excited about having bigger and faster storage that I flashed both a new ROM and recovery that week. Anyway, I haven't had any other issue since.
So I'd say try a new recovery and ROM after fully formatting your SD card (i.e. erase both /sdcard and /sd-ext and create new partitions) and if that doesn't cut it, you should think of getting a new micro sd.
Good luck!

yeah, sdcard can be worn. I had a few cards that worn out by using it with Data2ext, because than there were many I/Os operations and it finally killed one card so I couldnt even modify the boot record.
