Why screen protectors? - General Accessories

Almost all phones now days have screens made with some kind of scratch resistant glass (like Gorilla Glass) so why do people still insist on putting a screen protector on? surely anything that could sctrach your screen now days wouldn't be stopped by the sheet of plastic. I get just as many marks on my screen from using it (fingerprints and such) by using a screen protector or not.
so why do people still insist on using them, I just don't see the need.

I only use the ones with anti finger print. Because my screen gets all covered in prints..

a screen protector and case add substantial extra protection. Even a just the phone falling to floor, without a screen protector can badly scratch or break screen.

I don't use those protectors anymore becuase the material is very often very cheap. All my protectors got soo many scratches so i "put it away" and now I don't get any scratches on my display.

I haven't used a screen protector in a while. I just use the case with my S3 and leave it without. You just gotta make sure you clean off the screan from prints and that's it. I find the screen protectors were more of a pain in the ass than anything.

I'm with iXanza, I specifically have the anti-smudge protector because between me and my girlfirend and babysitting my cousins my screen gets so greasy and gross I can't even enter my unlock code without having the protector..

Beacuse I already scratched my phone in my pocket without that protection. I put together wuth my car keys

Not got one for mine, and so far so good.

Because it keeps your screen like new

Gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof. Sodium is very sharp, and can damage gorilla glass. Sand is even worse. When you can buy screen protecters cheap, why not? Replacing a protecters is a lot better than replacing a screen.

Because anyone with a wife knows they will DESTROY any device that isn't protected... My wife ruined a very good screen protector the first week she had it on her phone. Mine looks new up until I sell my phone, perhaps years later. I can't imagine what kind of damage a naked phone would have after a trip in her purse. Lol

+1 to all posts differentiating scratch resistant vs scratch proof. No glass is scratch proof, so the trick is finding a screen protector that doesn't dramatically compromise touch screen sensitivity. Going without screen protection will equal scratches, but people balance usability vs. Protection to determine if they slap a protector on there. Wow...it's just like condoms in a way.

I gave up on screen protectors...didn't think I needed one due to the higher quality glass in todays phones. But alas, there is a huge scratch across the screen of my Xiaomi MI. Kind of disappointed. I much prefer the clarity and sensitivity of not using a protector but...
~j

I used to wear a screen protector on my phone but now i dont.
I put my phone into my bag with keys and other accessories and the screen protector did a great job but i had to replace it often.
So i abandon the idea of a screen protector and i bought a leather case that protects whole device and everything is ok.
Additionaly the sense of "naked" screen is better of any protector...

They all have the same purpose whether you like it or not, i.e. protect your screen. So save money for something else more important if you don't think you would need one. I got 2 kids and they have been fighting to each other everyday just to get the Nexus 7 and it's been scratched up like hell. So I must have one to protect it.

Screen Protection?

Yea or Nay?
I saw a Zagg at Best Buy for $29. Worth it? I know i do not want to scratch the screen.
I've been going back & forth whether or not I should get one as well. I tend to see more negative reviews than positive ones for the Zagg. I won't be as rough with it like I am with my cell phone. I'm wondering if I will need a protector at all.
I got an InvisibleShield and I think it's worth it. It's just comforting to know that I can do whatever I want to the screen, and there won't be any scratches on it.
I have one on my captivate, my laptop and have ordered one for my tab. I will say they are definitely not for everyone. So heres how I would describe it:
-100% will protect your screen from scratches (micro and major). Even gorilla glass will scratch.
- Feels like a orange peel or rubber/plastic on the screen. I love it, some ppl really hate it.
- After cleaning it, you might notice your finger catching a bit on swipes and drags. Its minor but some people again like that super slick glass feel for a touch screen and thats understandable.
- Might have some small bubbles after applying. They WILL go away over time, I promise.
I just picked up a tab yesterday and when I saw the price for the Zaggs, I said forgettaboutit!
I have had them on my phones for years, deff not putting one on the Tablet. It's not carried around in your pocket. It has scratch resistant glass so any normal day to day stuff shouldn't scratch it.
Those wet application orange peel ones all suck.
Static screen protectors are much easier to try and remove if you dont like them.
Not sure if the GT has gorilla glass but my Evo does and i have dropped it atleast 6x i the year i have owned it. All 4 corners got marks and i even managed to drop it face down in a compacted gravel parking lot. It slid after it landed face down! Still not one scratch when im sure normal glass would have spider webbed. So if its gorilla glass dont need a screen protector baby!
On my phone? Absolutely. On the Tab? I don't think it's necessary. I've had my ipad since it launched without a screen protector, and don't have a single scratch, because when I'm not using it, it's in a case

Nay for the tab. It's going to spend most of its time in my house on the coffee table. Gorilla Glass has me covered, in my opinion.

The IO edition uses a different display than the retail. So it is possible the glass is different as well.

I'm not a big fan of the smudges either but you only notice them when the display is off or you're viewing the screen from a wide angle. When I'm using it right in front of me, I can't even see them and I know it has a lot of smudges on it.
Like others said, it's not my phone so it won't be directly exposed to keys or other things that may scratch it. I can't wait for my Samsung book case to arrive to I feel better about it sitting out when I'm not using it.

Boxwave Cleartouch Anti-Glare is really good at resisting fingerprints, if you don't mind a matte screen (I prefer a matte anti-glare on all my mobile devices)
Wasn't available yet, last time I checked, for the GTAB 10.1 but I'm sure it will be out shortly. Have one on my XOOM and my GTAB 7.
Are there any pics or videos of this on the web? I've never used anti glare screens I feel like its going to drop the screen quality.

It's the brand-name for hardened glass that everybody knows about. Like all brands of tissue are "Kleenex" now.
Even though most products do indeed use Gorilla Glass brand hardened glass even if they didn't I doubt anything ships with the poorly thought out glass and plastic that PDA touch screens of yore had on them.
RIP iPaq and Casiopea
I'd just buy this screen protector (it's only $5).
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0057RMT3C
But looking at the gorilla glass website, I noticed that the overseas GSII is on the list, but not the US varients (which I'd assume does have gorilla glass.)
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/samsung
Oops, screen protector is only $5.
I wouldn't bother with a screen protector. They just make the display look muddier, reduce sensitivity, and the glass used (which I'm pretty confident is Gorilla Glass) can stand up to essentially everything that the screen protector would protect against.
Waste of a beatuiful screen getting a protector. Gorilla Glass holds up to anything a protector would like the last post says.
Sprint's Epic 4G Touch guide was leaked a couple weeks back and it said it's got Gorilla Glass.
Save money and enjoy your awesome screen the way it was intended! My original epic got dropped sooo many times on hard floors, cement, etc. Not a single scratch on it. Even accidently put my keys in the same pocket on accidnet a few times. Nothing!

I've seen my friend attempt to scratch the surface of his phone with his keys as hard as he can and still did not scratch. that being said I tend to have my keys in the same pocket thus wanting to prevent scratches.
As other poster stated, i rather not have a screen protector since it makes display, sensitivity, ect... crappier.
If it is indeed gorilla glass then no need for screen protector, if not i will buy one to protect the phone.
i'm not asking because i'm afraid of screen getting cracked, i know gorilla glass is just as easy for regular glass to crack. people have a misconception that gorillas glass does not crack. it's just scratch resistant and nothing else.

Have him try that with sand...sure, the screen protector is even less resistant to sand but at least it's a barrier.
...that said I always use screen protectors. I don't know what kind of screen protectors everyone is using that muddys or dulls the screen. There may be a nearly imperceptible level of sensitivity lost, but, my phones have always been as bright clear and sensitive as I could imagine I would ever need them to be, often more and I've never noticed a difference with the screen protector off.

I bought the $15 pack of screen protectors today with the phone and the guy put it on for me.. it adds a slight haze to the screen which sucks and I think I may pull it off later and see if I notice the sensitivity being any better and if the screen looks that much greater to me.. normally I like my phone naked.. but my last phone.. the galaxy s 4g for tmobile.. within a week I had little light scratches on it..like my keys hit the screen in the middle in my pocket.. which always slightly bothered me.
Screw it, I'm naked loving every minute of it
I have used with and without. I notice that it is harder to play games that require constant touch WITHOUT a protector. I love the feeling of the bare glass as well but I also like to play games.
Specifically: Gun Bros Pocket Legends, Legends Arcana.. any that require lots of constant touch.
Also, you do Not want to chance getting a 2$ screen protector from someplace like Ebay... I would recommend something of a bit higher quality..
I used a protector from Monoprice on the wife's Thunderbolt and you cant tell its on there. That one Was cheap but I also trust Monoprice supplies.
Besides, why even CHANCE taking damage on your investment? We do so much with these things, why chance hurting our enjoyment of them.
I'm not...never used one on the og epic with gorilla glass...won't use one on this one....I will however keep it in a pocket by itself

I found out the same thing, only after putting the phone in my pocket with my keys. The screen with scratch so I highly recommend that you put on a screen protector
I'm glad this thread hasn't gone retarded with a bunch of assumptions and stuff.
Gorilla glass is just a name. other tempered/reinforced glass can be designed the same way or even better but is not called "gorilla glass".
Like others have mentioned, the glass is pretty sturdy and can protect it from scratches from most day to day objects and items that you use. However, sand in your pocket or on the table can scratch the **** out of the glass because it is compiled by a lot of different minerals.. shoot there might be even diamond in it.
I'm sure most active users on XDA take care of our devices and will be annoyed by the smallest scratches on the screen, so I would recommend a screen protector. It definitely helps prevent scratches and add an extra amount of "cushion" from small drops to prevent shattering your screen.
BTW I was fortunate enough to buy inexpensive screen protectors (like 5 for $4) on amazon and they turned out to be like the SGP ones. They were actually some of the best screen protectors I ever used, it felt identical to the glass. Just a thought if you decide to go the cheap route that there are some good and inexpensive generic ones.

Is it nessessory to get a screen protector for SGS3

Is it nessessory for me to get a screen protector for my new SGS3?
I heavily rely on the sensitive feel on the screen, and i just don't want to sacrifice its original beauty. i heard the screen on galaxy s3 use gorilla glass, need no protector any more, but i still worry to see scratches.
How about u guys? will u buy a screen protector?
I have a zagg screen cover (regular, not full body) but didn't care for it too much. It was put on perfectly (or as perfect as it could get) and I felt like it did dull the screen colors down a bit
I recently took it off when my Diztronic case came in and now just carry a micro fiber cloth with me. If the phone goes in my pocket I can slid that right over the screen
So I'd say no screen protector. If you have an extra micro fiber cloth around I would just use that

In all seriousness, no, it's not. The glass is pretty tough, it may get a few little scratches, maybe one or 2 big ones over the life of the phone. BUT if you're OCD about keeping the glass pristine, you want one, because gorilla glass is not invincible.
I got one for the future resale value bonus of "No Scratches", and as long as you get a smooth dry application screen protector, you won't notice a degradation of the feel of the surface of the phone.

which kind of screen protector did u get? cuz i think smooth ones will definitly influence the touch feeling and sensitivity. i play games a lot, so i hope to maintian its sensitivity with no scraches.
Iv never used a screen protector on any of my glass screen phones starting with 3gs on launch day. Iv never had any scratches at all. My right pocket is for my phone never anything else and I never set it down. Its in my hand or pocket

You dont need it, the screen is gorilla glass and the protection will make it look less vibrant and feel cheap

Not necessary, but recommended. Glass is glass it will scratch.

agreed! I accidentally used a Starbucks napkin to clean the screen from my greasy hands and fukin regret it dearly. My screen got three pretty long noticeable scratches (visible only when the screen is off and in the light) bothers me knowing that it's there and how stupid of me to have used a recycle napkin made with "at least 40% post-consumer fiber".

Though everyone has an opinion I think that its a must. Don't be fooled by Gorilla Glass it is not scratch proof. I baby my electronics and had never scratched a screen on any device I had owned. Then I look at my Galaxy Note and there are 2 scratches from NO-WHERE. Just poof no drop no bump...
So to be cautious I will always have one now.
I had a package of cheap screen protectors from 2007.. probably not even made for touch phones! But they fit so we installed them. The touchscreen works great and the screen looks fine. I can hardly tell it's there.
I know it'd drive me crazy if I got a scratch on my phone and had to look at for the next 2 years I'd definitely recommend buying a screen protector! I'm sure anything being sold today is better than what we've got installed So hopefully you won't even notice it and can protect your screen
I ALWAYS get one. If it makes it feel cheap, you probably got a cheap and/or crappy screen protector.
I like Martin Fields and have used Seidio ones as well. ZAGG (I think it is) you can get a Best Buy and other places SUCK. They have a sticky or rather rubber feel to them so your fingers don't glide smoothly and probably are what give people the "cheap" feel. The first two I mentioned feel identical to the glass. You won't even know they're there. I get a new phone once a year and never had more than a scratch or two on the protector only. Peel it off ... brand new phone still.
I figure it also helps against breakage since there is an extra layer of protection reinforcing the structure. Kind of like laminated glass. A friend got a giant gouge in his RAZR. GIANT wound to the screen protector, but it didn't make it through to the glass surface. No cracks or even scratches ... to the glass.
I stopped investing in them. My iPhone 4 was without for a year and no scratches. The protectors had scratches but they aren't as durable as the screen

What the hell are those napkins made of? Dear lord.
Definitely get a screen protector. Get a dry install screen protector that is clear and I guarantee that you won't notice it. I recommend SGP Nano Clear for this phone. It is very easy to install and works very well with cases. The only drawback is that it leaves about 1 mm or so uncovered around the edges, but fortunately this will be covered by most cases.
If you are wondering about getting a screen protector, then get one. You may regret it otherwise.

I got the Steinhill Ultra Crystal. It's a fingerprint magnet, but so it the rest of the phone, feels just like the glass though.
Yes get a screen protector. I highly recommend that you get one. Gorilla glass 2 is not scratch proof. I already scratched my screen and my HTC evo 4g lte screen. :-(
Why would you not get a screen protector for this phone? This is not a cheap phone so do yourself a favor and get you a good screen protector. You touch the screen whenever you use the phone and everytime you touch it, you risk scratching it due to dirt being on your hands. Protect your investment!
Normally I purchase wet application protectors from bestskinsever.com but wet application protectors do not play well with tpu cases for this phone.
I recommend the Reearth dry screen protector. You can find it on Amazon for 11.99 and it includes 2 protectors. It's an awesome protector and you won't even know it's on your phone.

No ...I'm not getting one,..I dropped my s2 down a stairs, was hit head on by a drunk driver , found my phone about 200 feet from my vehicle on the road, it had one tiny scratch that you could barely see,..and the S3 has a stronger screen, but its whatever you wanna do

Don't you think display is too defenceless ?

This device mount gorilla glass 3.i trust it.But maybe the display under gorilla glass is tooo weak.damn i had a s4 used without protection for 2 years.absolutely no scratches.Besides use display protection with the zenfnone2's low brightness woud be bad.i have this zenfone from 2 months and an ugly scratch is often visible.so i think the display is weak.s4 has gorilla glass 3 too but its diplay is stronger itself, without considering the gorilla glass.this thing annoy me
Had mine for 2 week without screen protection and it had small scratches all over. Keep in mine i had the asus flip cover with it witch is covered the whole time it was inside my pocket and so. I dont know what the cause of this. But i order an tempered glass to protected it from now on

I use a simple & cheap protection foil and it works well. No problems with brightness.
You can enhance the brightness by changing a setting in the asus energy app. I don't know exactly - removed the app
I've had mine for a month and I have no screen protector and it's in my pocket and I have no scratches........

Agreed with this guy. Mine's perfect? Maybe you put it in the same pocket as keys or something?
My dog stepped all over my screen and it's fine. lol Not even micro scratches.
No guys, i put it in quite secure places. Maybe in the same pocket of the lighter or the keys something like 1 or 2 times. However is a shallow and tiny scratch but sometimes it's visible and it's annoying
I have a couple minor scratches that aren't noticeable with screen on maybe 1 cm or so. . I have a glass protector on the way. . Don't know what caused it maybe the time I accidently put phone in pocket with screwdriver. Anyway hopefully screen protector hurries up from China

I put a screen protector on after about 1 week. The glass was flawless at the time. The screen protector now has several scuffs and scratches, but I'm hopeful that the glass under it is still in perfect shape.

Oh it's fine. If you ever have a spare one lying around or feel like testing buy a cheap one on eBay and it with a hammer. Not at full force obviously but if you just let gravity do the work for you it may not even Crack on first try.

I once saw an S4 with a very long scratch, maybe 4-5 centimeters long, after less than a week of use. You have to remember that no matter what, sand is the same hardness as the screen (glass is made of sand, after all ) and will scratch it.
Easiest solution, get a tempered glass screen protector. They're about $5 on ebay. If it gets scratched or cracked, replace it...
They work fine and I've had no problems with it...

I strongly agreed. In fact, I'd say phone makers should just stop using those fancy monkey-named glass to keep the price low, and let the customers spend the money on the tempered glass protector - or just make it standard accessories.

Has anyone found a site that sells an extra pace of gorilla glass for the whole display?

What do they feel like though? My sister has a screen protector oh her iPhone and it feels all plastic and horrible compared to the original screen; not sure what she used however. Does the tempered glass actually feel like glass?
Got to dedicate the right front pocket to only your smartphone. Do this and you'll never get scratches.

The tempered glass screen protectors are naturally quite rigid before application, but bizarrely I wasn't able to find many glass ones for this when I was looking. Perhaps it's something to do with the very flat profile that the body has around the screen, such would have a very discernible "step" between the screen and the body. I have a protector made by Celicious, which is some type of polyurethane and it seems to be doing a great job, not the typically easily-scuffed plastic protectors. Has anyone else used a tempered glass protector for the Zenfone 2 and what are your thoughts on it?

I have 2 Zenfone 2's. Both have glass screen protectors. The ones I bought have a curved edge and are really good.
Glass will always feel like glass (these are NOT plastic or anything else). Just make sure to get the version with the left hand side proximity sensor cutout as there were problems reported with complete glass versions where the screen wouldn't come back on after calls.
No real problems but if possible try to get oleophobic coating as it will cut down on fingerprints though a quick wipe will fix it if you don't have this.
As I said $5AUD on ebay for these, here - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/371300680925?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
I have tempered glass too..it surely protects...just be sure proximity sensor not covered by the tempered glass...mine has a cut specifically for that..

Problem with this it has not proximity sensor cut...i think the cuts for the front camera as shown?
I bought this one http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00SMAC0BW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00 on 1st july and it has no scratches at all (had the phone 2 weeks before that and no scratches there neither).
Also got the black hardcover (which includes a pretty ****ty protective plastic foil)
Btw, keys etc shouldn't be able to scratch the screen at all. Even with quite a bit of force (just tested it ... you can feel if it's just gliding smooth over the screen). Sand can have particles in it which are hard enough

Nope, it's for the proximity sensor. I have 2 on right now... The pictures are done wrong. The last screen without the phone is the right orientation...
