What do repair companies look for to see if warranty is void on phones? - HTC One X

I have a HTC one X, got the black screen of death. I assumed it was a loose connection as the phone is sometimes dropped. I found a forum online mentioning that its the motherboard thats faulty.
I had the phone fixed by HTC after the LED screen was shattered, this cost me around 140 quid. They sent me a refurbished phone, I noticed the screen flickered under certain colours but assumed it was a driver issue. I updated the phone and found 2 updates and seemed fine after that.
Then few days back I put my phone down for couple hrs and come back to it to find the screen is black. Apparently is the video driver shorting or something.
HTC basically gave me faulty phone, thats how i see it, just wondering if I was to send it off what do they look for to see if the case has been opened. Hopefully I can seal it back and they might not notice?
I wanted to fix it myself initially, because I have data on my phone thats not backed up.
Also is the motherboard replacement under warranty or?

Hello.
If you open the phone, i would assume they can see its been opened before. This can be done in many ways. Some screws show signs of having been removed, and scratches on the top of the screws also indicates this.. Then there are the "warrenty if void" stickers across places you need to breach.
Do you plan on opening up the phone? From what you write you have not yet opened the (faulty) phone you got from them, as a replacement? If they gave you a faulty phone, they did not fix the issue with it (you still have issues), and then i believe it should be straight forward to return it. Simply telling them what you write here (got it, noticed wierd stuff, updated it and then it seemed fine, but now its dead). The phone never REALLY worked, after you got it back (refurbished = phone returned to HTC that they send out to other customers as "NEW" while its in fact "CLEANED AND AS-GOOD-AS-NEW" - right?)
My advice would be to NOT OPEN the phone, start by having them replace it. If THAT fails, you can resort to opening it yourself.
Kind Regards

The problem was I was kinda impatient, and assumed it was a loose connection. Also I have data on the phone and was convinced I could fix it myself (have done other phones). I know when you send the phone off they get wiped before any work is done on them.
I have opened it, there was one screw at the top of the phone with a void print on it. I didn't scuff the screw and was put back in the exact same place.
There was no void stickers or tags to move, the only thing was the battery was stuck down to the base of the phone. It's now loose, i was hoping if i just stick that back and send it off they won't notice anything. There's no marks inside or outside of the phone, look new still.

AW: What do repair companies look for to see if warranty is void on phones?
Well I think there is no way to get a new phone, because you bought a refurbished phone. There is a warranty on refurbished phones, but I'm pretty sure that its nearly impossible to proof that it was their fault or already damaged when you got it.

I bought the phone brand new from a phone company (in store), since then I've had the phone fixed 3 times. Twice was my fault, but the other fault was the touch screen buttons on the bottom of the phone. They were no longer responsive.
I basically shattered the LED screen, sent it off to HTC, paid 140 quid for repair and sent me this crappy refurbished phone back. This one had the flickering issues and eventually fried the motherboard. Something about shorting the video driver i read in another xda thread.

[Q] How to fix my screen?

My screen died last night. The phone works as I can hear all the sounds and my bottom buttons still light up, etc but I have a black screen.
I called a local repair shop and they stated it wasn’t worth repairing and that they’d be guessing what parts need replacement. Based on the symptoms above is this true? Can anyone tell me if they know what part I would need to buy to try the repair myself? Is it worth trying to fix myself?
There are two parts, the screen itself and the digitizer. The digitizer is the actual glass you touch, if that's not cracked, then you are good with that. The screen is the actual lcd under the glass.
Both can be found on ebay for 20-50 bucks, and there are tutorials here and on youtube to show you how to take it apart and fix it. FYI, there are two types of lcd's, one with a small ribbon and one with a wider one. The only way to know if to take your phone apart so you order the right one.
Seems like I can get both parts from Amazon Prime for less than $50 total which makes this worth a try. Can you suggest a good tool kit for this project?
Thanks!

Not worth repairing? I'ts cheap as hell to repair your issue.
**LINK**
You can also buy the replacement parts from that website as well. However, you might browse ebay first to see if you can get the parts for cheaper.
Edit: If the guys at the repair shop can't have any kind of educated idea as to what would be the problem with your screen going out then i would suggest not letting them anywhere near any of your computers either.
1. If screen turns on when the phone initially starts and then stops working when Android attempts to load then you've obviously got a software issue.
2. If screen doesn't work at all during the phone's initial startup process then you've obviously got a hardware problem.
3. A quick Google search shows the parts involved in replacing a screen and countless videos on how to do it. Takes only a few minutes to get a complete understanding of how it's done (It's not all that dissimilar from replacing a laptop screen). And it probably take 30-45 minutes, taking it slow since it would be a new process for the tech, to actually do the replacement.
4. Any semi-decent tech should be able to diagnose your problem within 5 minutes of looking at the phone and then have your phone back to you an hour and a half after receiving the parts.

#2 describes my phone except the screen came back on today so it is intermittent or possibly in the process of dying. The phone is rooted but running stock so I don't think software is the issue.

Disconnected Ribbon

I was playing with my phone today, and all of a sudden the screen stopped working. I opened the keyboard and it lit up, and everything was good, but the screen was black. Rebooted, no good. I looked on the back of the phone, and right there was a disconnected ribbon. I have no idea how this ribbon got disconnected, but with my limited knowledge, I believe this ribbon is what connects the phone to the screen. I know the phone is working, I did a blind backup of my ROM, and when I booted normally for a few minutes, I felt a vibration from a text message. Is there anyway I can fix this? I already scheduled to go into the repair store tomorrow, but I kinda wanna do it now if anybody knows how I can fix it.
Also, I think it'd be smart to restore my phone back to stock, just in case they need to send it in for it to be replaced? I mean, I wouldn't want to find out they have to replace it, and then have to come home, restock it, and then go back on a different day just to wait 2-3 days for it to be replaced, or is it an in store job? (If so, can anybody direct me to a download link to a stock.tar? All of the links in the Thread with them all aren't working.)
Flashing to stock is always advisable when taking your phone in for repair - have you searched the forums for this problem already?
In my last repair issue...the screen was smashed and then four months later, the ribbon went bad, so they just junked my phone and gave me a new one since the screen was cracked. I actually hard bricked my phone instead of flashing to stock and wiped all data before that.

I recently got my ribbon cable issue fixed, it ripped because of a card sliding between the screen and keyboard. Originally they only replaced the top half of the phone for 35$ but the part they put on didn't work correctly. The speaker didn't work at all, so they ordered me a refurb it took a day and I didn't have to pay again. I hope they can fix your phone thoug.

Here's what happened. I took it into the store, and they told me that it was a hardware malfunction, and that they could not fix it. They told me had I purchased insurance, they would've fixed it, but it's not covered by my manufacturer's warranty. So now I'm stuck with no phone. I'm taking it into a 3rd party repair store to see if they can fix it, but until then, I'll probably have to order a new screen -__-.
EDIT: If I but a new Main Flex Cable, would I be able to replace it myself? Or would I need to replace the entire screen?
ALSO: If I take the phone apart and try to tighten the Main Flex Cable with some tape or something onto it, would that be possible?

Is this fraudelent or not?

Hi guys, I'm currently on my second one x as first was faulty.
This handset is also faulty and I have a replacement due on Tuesday. I booked the replacement within minutes of getting the handset as the same issues occurred (graphical corruption on most screens, like a garbled cartridge game lol. Also signal dropping not reconnecting)
Annoyingly, my gf handed the phone to me in town today, we fumbled and dropped the thing (headbutting each other in the process, not graceful lol) and now there are several minor scratches on the screen. Not immediately noticeable but you'd see em if you looked for em.
So, in a longwinded way my question is thus. Is it fraudulent to continue with the replacement? I'm hoping they'd right the phone off as a manufacturer fault anyways without much of a check, I'm only on day 9 of my conteact so replacements are easy at this point. Bit fearful they'd just charge for a repair though. Can't afford that,..
What say you fellow xda members, Is this wrong or fine considering the handset was unquestionably faulty on arrival?
Just send it back again, mine has that graphical corruption u r on about, but very rarely happens, it usually on the browser, I'm gonna wait for my SLOW o2 network provider to push the updates out before I decide to send back, just incase that fixes it

Thanks. Do you think they'll care the screen is now scratched? That's my worry.
I'm with three if that helps.
No aslong as there is no real bad damage, they know its hardware/software problem and the condition of the phone shouldn't mattter

[Q] htc one x problems after screen repair

hi, have searched and searched on the forum but no real answer to my problem.
i dropped my htc one x and the glass cracked, so i sent it away to a supposed reputable firm (i didnt realise htc repaired phones aswell otherwise i would have sent it there)
anyway the lcd display and brightness worked perfectly, the company have replaced the screen and now the backlight no longer works and flickers when touched or cpu is being used.
they have said it is the display IC, and coil etc,
they say that this was caused by the phone being dropped, and not by them and they have charged me (they take payment before sending phone back), they initially took the phone back, and 3 weeks later they have decided to wash there hands of it, have put the phone back together shodily tell me i have to put up with the phone as it is, and refuse me a refund.
they acknowledge that the ic was fine before they took it apart, but blame it on the nature of the phone design as to why it now doesn't work.
i would post link to another forum explainingg the possible issue (has no explanation of cause though) and pics of the phone has been returned to me, but i can't because im a noob
Basicly the question is,
Who is at fault?
And how could the ic get shorted out,
The backlight flickering is likely to be poor installation of the new screen.
Again this is an old example I'm referring to here. I used to replace the screens on the Nokia n95 quite regularly.
You get the screen assembly and the ribbon cable which attached to the motherboard.
If the ribbon cable was not seated 100% perfectly I would get the exact same symptoms you are describing.
No backlight. Pressing down on the screen would either get it to flicker or come on for a while.
It shows a poor connection. I took the screen back out and repositioned the cable back in. Reassembled and then it was fine after

Hi mate did you managed to get this sorted I am having the exact trouble same issue with a company call Elite Phones and Computers.
They are saying that the IC shorted out and the only repair would have to be a replacement board.

Sevice Reply on Dropped HOX with screen brightness problem

As some of you remember I dropped my HOX last week causing screen brightness problem.
I just got a reply from the service saying that the main board and battery has to be replaced(fortuntely they said this will not cost me anything as the phone is on warranty... )))) )
Do you think they are right considering that the phone appart from the screen brightness problem was working just fine?
Yes - not sure why you are even questioning it considering you are getting a virtually new phone out of it.

Just wondering because it doesnt seem very logic and it will take at least 2-3 weeks to fix as they have to order the main board.
Needless to say I am pretty happy with the service as they dont even try to charge me with anything.
They're unlikely to spend Warranty money doing unnecessary work, so just accept it.
You need to bear in mind, there are actually very few replaceable parts in these devices. There is the LCD, which tends to be basically one piece with everything sandwiched together (I know you can replace digitizers and surface glass separately, but the LCD unit comes as one pre-fab piece). There is the battery. And basically everything else is soldered to the mainboard.
Before one week they repleaced my HOX with new one. I have Black Screen of dead. They worked one month on the old phone and after 30 day they repleaced with new one and extend my warranty with 60 days. I am so happy naw with my new HOX. And this with stock rom and relocked bootloader. They did't say nothing for the relocked bootloader
Better be lucky to get a new battery on an old device.
I wish mine would have a new battery and not it's old, worn out one
My battery was worn out too so I cant say I am unhappy that I will be getting a new one and a new main board too.I do get that this is like getting a new phone but the wait to get it on my hands again is killing me.They said it will take max 3 weeks and that I might also get it next week.I do believe them...

One more thing to
add is that all this is cost free and the screen was replaced on May again cost free although I had ruined it spilling alocohol on it.All in all only the cover will be left from the device I purchased last November. One question though I asked for the cover to be replaced with the white one accepting the cost but they declined....Why is that you think?
