[Q] Can't copy anything from my PC to my internal/external sdcard - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

The PC shows my device and my external and internal drives.
If I browse through my external or internal sdcard, it shows my folders and the files in them. If I try to paste something in either storage, it tries to move the file for like 3 minutes then it gives me the message that my device might not be able to view or play the file. If I tell it to move it anyway, it gives me a message saying that it can't copy it and also "My device might be unresponsive or disconnected". I tried to paste a song as well but it denied my request saying how "the device doesn't support .mp3 files" which can't be right since I did it before.
Also, if I go to recovery and try to mount it, the pc doesn't show any drives for it.
I thought it might of been a hardware id issue so I followed this method found here but it didn't help me. I have version 1.4.6.0 of the samsung usb drivers installed and I have Kies installed as well. I'm running the Anthrax Kernel w/ Jellybomb v. 14.
I've tried looking at other threads but I've had no luck with them. I would be grateful if someone could help me
Edit- I ran a troubleshoot program on the device manager for windows and it said it was a driver problem. I clicked the box for more info and it said the MTP USB Device failed to install. If i reconnect the usb cable, it installs fine on MTP mode. On PTP Mode, it fails to install. Regardless, I'm still not able to paste anything to the internal or external memory. Another strange occurence that I found out was that I waited like 10 minutes and tried to copy my files to the internal storage, and it worked! But, I tried copying the same files to the external right after that and it gave me "the device has either stopped responding or is disconnected" error.

Noob here, but I have a similar issue. Just watched an XDA video discussing the problem. ... MTP is the issue. It works differently than mass usb storage. I'll try to find the thread again and post the link.

Interesting, the video helps explain it clearly. I'm wondering if it's a ROM issue though. I was gonna try switching ROMs...maybe even do a factory reset if I get a free day.

It has to do with how TW handle the PC connection when you plug it in, so its only specific to stock or stock based
AOSP always has and will allow you to mount as a drive

I'm running JellyBomb v14 , and do not have that issue. One thing you may want to try is reformatting your SD Card. Ran into the same issue on a friends device. Turned out it was his SD Card. You can use sd formatter. It works quite well, and it's free.

I'm rooted, but running the stock ROM. At this point I'm sure it's the ROM. I'm going to load the gs3 toolkit on my pc, see if it works before I try a different ROM.

So I've got a work around for us, air droid or WiFi droid.
I tried Wi-Fi data transfer, but I couldn't access the external SD card.

You could try to install Kies, it comes with samsung usb drivers. Then you can uninstall it and the drivers will remain.
Also, microsoft mtp drivers are included with the latest media player. Maybe update that.

Yup it's checked.
Maybe this is relevant, when in clock work mod recovery, I tried to format ext SD. said it completed, but it didn't wipe the card...

I know this isn't ideal, but you could always use 'adb' to push and pull files to/from phone. I do that frequently when on linux as MTP support is meh.

Did you ever format the SD Card? What I mean is actually pulling the SD Card out of the Device, and formatting it. Copy your stuff to the Desktop. Then format the SD Card. You can use SD Formatter as I suggested before.

I've formatted the ext sd. Tried different cables. Tried connecting in download mode. Nothing works. Right now I'm just pulling the sd and using a adapter for the pc to transfer data, it's a pain, but faster than Wi-Fi....

Do you have an SD Card adapter? If so, look on the left side of it. There should be a little tap. When insert your Micro SD Card in make sure the tap is all the way up. Up is unlocked on most SD Cards.

I tried various methods to resolve this copying problem (settings, drivers, cables, different USB ports etc.). Eventually I gave up and tried the WifiDroid and AirDroid style apps to transfer files reliably. They worked without error but were clunky to use. Especially if you wanted to copy multiple folders at once and still use the phone for other tasks. The best product I found to do this was Solid Explorer on the Play store. Its very easy to create a FTP connection between PC and phone and then simply to drag/drop multiple files/folders in the traditional Windows manner. Better still I can walk around at home listening to music or a book on the phone while the files copy in the background. Quick, reliable and no annoying file copy errors.

[Q] How to grant access to SD on PC once using cm7?

I follow the quoted post of Aleks to root my phone and setup cm7, it can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194&page=50
Unfortunately I was lazy and used Samsung Kies to access my SD cards instead of following his instructions to allow my PC to view them. Now using cm7 I don't get the usb utilities option he describes when I go under wireless and network settings.

USB works fine for me on cm7. Adb also. Although I know some people can't get it to work. The first time you plugged your phone in after flashing cm7 did you let all the drivers install when you plugged your phone in? It took my laptop like 10 minutes to find and install the drivers

Okay using the stock Android OS when I go into Wireless and Network settings there is an option for usb utilities that when I go into allows me to access the SD cards on my PC. Does this appear only if connected to a PC via usb? Because I recall looking in the same or similar settings option when running cm7 and not finding usb utilities.
SD card mounting works fine if you use Auto USB Mount from the Market.
Wifi explorer from marketplace works for me

Galaxy Nexus Mounting to Mac/Windows issues

So i am trying to mount my Nexus mass storage drive to my mac and windows computers and my phone will not connect to the phone. It will sometimes open up the file manager app and show me files on the computer, but the files it shows are wrongly named, previous deleted and wont let me copy anything to the drive or delete .
But when i use a file explorer on the phone, i see the right files and no mess ups.
anyone have any ideas on how to fix it so my computer reads my phone properly?
ive tried restarting all devices, used different cables and Wiped formatted and installed new roms
only thing i have not tired is format "sdcard" on the phone.
anyone know how to do this?
it was working for a little bit, but i do not know what i did to fix it. anyone got any ideas?
i am also using a LTE U.S. version of the nexus if that helps.
Im rooted running the newest AOKP Build 28
and running imoseyon_leanKernel_v2.7.2gnexus
The Nexus does not have a mass storage mode. It uses MTP. The easiest way to transfer files using a Mac is to use wifi file explorer. I had a hell of a time getting it working on my Mac using USB, so I ended up just doing it over wifi with wifi file explorer.

Try changing it from MTP to PTP. Let the computer find it again, then switch it back to MTP. Works for me every time

i seriously dont want to use airdroid.. i need to move heavy files and i dont want to spend years by my PC waiting for my phone to finish transferring files over the air.. i want to be able to see my sd card via usb.
thanks for the encouragement.. i know i'll get a solution with your help..
Fair enough. What if you do install windows media player 11 and see what that does?
Sent from my SGH-T999
Um the sdcard can only write at about say max 80Mbps sustained. WLAN will be fast enough at 40.. what is USB2.0?
Anyways if you are putting lots of files, leave them on external, and don't have to worry about copying again. No good reason to have then on sdcard vs external.
You can just copy to ext then use any file mgr program to copy it using the phone.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I use N so it's 100mbps and fast enough to not notice any difference. I'm guessing your problem is that XP is old as F. A simple solution is to just plug the sd card into your computer. But as it was pointed out the sd card is slower than wifi so it really doesn't matter.
Oh and I'd just like to point out you could have moved the files 10000 times by now. With airdroid you can move around the house while files are transferring. So you can relax and still use the phone instead of being tethered to the computer. And if you have splashtop you'd never even have to touch your PC.
Put Linux on a flash drive and use that?

Phone Detection

Everytime I plug in my phone I get this message about hardware ID not recognized. I have to reinstall usb drivers each time this happens..Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I running the synergy rom. Computer is Win7
it's a Windows issue. Samsung or Microsoft have the wrong drivers on Microsoft's servers.
You can try installing the KIES drivers for windows from Samsung's site. Personally, I just don't install Samsung drivers. Windows will install enough drivers that you can access the phone and SD card. You just won't have access for ADB. Here's a thread I did on it explaining the process: XDA linky

However it transfers god awfully slow and if the file is a ccertain size or will say it stopped copying.
For instance when I copy over Isi and cso format files, For the PSP emulator.
Which means I have to take out the SD card inserted into a card reader then put it into my computer then transfer the files and then put it back into my phone which is a nuisance

I don't doubt what you're saying. If you checked out the thread, it was a limited solution. But for most, it was good enough to move files back and forth fine. May not be the fastest, but it was faster than the plug and plug the USB cord, or uninstall and reinstall the Samssung or other drivers.
I've tried most of what other suggested, install previous samsung drivers while disconnected from the internet, installing KIES drivers through Samsungs site, and so forth. Some worked better, but all eventually failed fairly quickly; I think I got two days with the KIES drivers.
The biggest problem with the solution is the lack of ADB. Being able to use ADB with the GN2 may not be used often by some, but it's a life saver when used.

Xperia S Deleted sdcard folder and general panic

While meaning to transfer all my junk from my old Xperia S to my laptop, I found the then foreign looking sdcard folder, empty save for another folder whos name I now forget, and deleted it, not knowing the havoc that would ensue.
The appocalypse happened as a result, and I can no longer find any of the 15gigglebytes of files I meant to back up. The internal storage says it's empty, no trace of the files in either the phone or via my laptop.
After reading through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2080449 I downloaded SDmount and tried recovering the files with Recuva, but upon selecting Mount as Mass Storage in SDmount my computer won't recognise my phone at all, it doesn't react in any way once I've plugged in the usb cable, other than charging the phone.
Am I doing something terribly wrong? Is there any method I've missed? Is it possible to undo the damage by somehow restoring the sdcard folder?
Please help, I am at wits end here. It is a rooted Xperia S with android 4.1.2, my laptop is running windows 8.

Is you for real?
EDIT: I have made progress. While reading through the SDmount thread it dawned on me that I had not turned on USB debug mode. My laptop now recognises my phone as an undefined mass storage device.
Now the lingering question is, should I wait for further directive from more helpful posters, or should I give Recuva or Photorec a try?
EDIT2: Photorec is doing its magic! It's ripping files out of that thing like a snowblower. Absolutely beautiful. No pictures yet, mostly .ogg files and the five demo movies you see running on demonstration phones in stores, but it's something!
