replacing flex cable - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

okay so my epic is turning off all the time when i open or close keyboard and its happening more frequently...iv been calling around phone repair stores in my town and every1s saying its the flex cable and goes out every 2years or so they said....so has any1 every done this???it cost like 7bucks for a flex cable and in my town it cost 45 bucks to repair this and would rather do it myself but it looks so hard to actually get to the flex cable to replace it :\

My Epic did that with the extended battery. I put a piece of matchbook cover between the battery and cover... Problem solved.

I dropped it in water . Watched a you tube video for opening the epic. I think it was for screen replacement. It was about a year ago so i dont remember the details. I stripped the thing down completely and cleaned the inside. It was not difficult so I imagine just replacing the cable would be slightly simpler.

I think it might be my extended battery and might try match book thing as said ima order a slim qcell epic touch battery see how that goes I lost oem battery and battery door cuz I have 3extended hyperion batteries and not sure where the hell my oem backing and battery are 2of the hyperions have messed up bars where the battery connects to the epic and the good1 dosnt make my epic turn off much at all

off topic. Its been a while I was the guy who posted that guide on unbricking the epic so far i have developed 3 roms from source:laugh:

I have replaced my flex cable twice and my hinge assembly once on my personal Epic, and was employed at a cell phone repair company where I replaced several others. There are YouTube guides on how to do this (Ifixit is a good source), but you will need patience and a good, small phillips head screwdriver and pry tool (I recommend a guitar pic). It should calmly take you 45 uninterrupted minutes for the entire repair.
When you buy one cable, buy TWO- you will most likely cut the flex cable upon reassembly unless you are careful. I have used this cable/company several times (the same company also sells on eBay): https://www.wholesalegadgetparts.com/product.php?productid=17839

Speaker phone defaulted on

So still running a froyo based Rom and whenever I make a phone call it always defaults with speaker phone on. Just started doing this a couple days ago. Tried rebooting, cleared cache and still the same. Any suggestions?

If its caused by the car dock mode I think I found a fix.
I turned my phone off, cleaned out the USB port on my phone and bridged all the connections in the charging port with a piece of aluminum foil then removed the aluminum foil and rebooted it.
It happened after buying a charger from five and below. I'm thinking its caused by poor insulation allowing static charges on pins that aren't supposed to have a charge on them, however, I am not sure what causes it...
Either way, cleaning didn't work but the crumbled up piece of aluminum foil did the trick. Give it a try and let me know if it helps so I can chalk it up to actual fix or random chance.

Well the car panel app starts up when I reboot the phone so I unchecked the automatic start and the app don't open anymore. So I basically just take the foil and shove up in the port then plug the charger in?

I had the same problem just a few days ago. I took my phone in after having putting it back to stock (Stock Rom and S-ON). They ran the diagnostics and then replaced my phone for $35 under the 1yr warranty. Their first suspicion is water damage but if your water markers are in perfect condition and your phone looks like its in good shape then they might replace it. My 1yr launch day phone looked like the day i got it so they replaced it without any questions. Good Luck!

Ok, let me post very clear instructions on what I did. If your car dock comes on when you turn the phone on , this is the exact same problem I had.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, I DO NOT GUARANTEE THIS WILL WORK AND I AM NO RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DAMAGE YOUR PHONE. Below is exactly how my phone was fixed once and for all.
Here are very specific instructions on how I fixed mine:
1. Power off phone
2. Remove battery entirely
3. Get toothpick, CAREFULLY and GENTLY clean all debris in the port, I pulled out a ton of dust.
4. If you have compressed air, use it and clean it out with that as well
5. Take a piece of aluminum foil, crumple it up a bit and carefully stick it in your charging port and bridge all the tiny pins together, BE GENTLE but kinda move it around and make sure all the pins get touched by the aluminum foil at the same time.
6. Remove aluminum foil from charging port and discard.
7. Put battery back into phone
8. Power on and hope your phone doesn't have its speaker on next time you make a call.
Good luck.
Well apparently my phone must be f'd up. Tried the fix posted above a few times with no luck tried 3 different chargers with no luck. So I guess maybe I should unroot and maybe get the 3d. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Thanks for this post, I was about to post the same thing. Ended up doing the tin foil trick (took some from the hat I wear on my head). No more answering on speaker phone
So the strangest thing happened. Made a call before lunch and phone went straight to speaker as usual..went to lunch and left phone in the car, car was hot when I came back went to make another call and no speaker lol. Plugged in headphones and was able to control volume. And so far made couple more calls and all is good. Seems it took a week for it to work itself out idk.
Its def the charging port causing the issue. Had the same thing happen to mine last week on my Launch Day evo (Hardware 0002).

-If you dont feel like reading that thread then ill give the short version.
I tried cleaning it out with electronics cleaner and it didnt help. Heck, i used a bit to much on my last attempt (of 4) and it got under the screen. The phone still worked like a champ but i hated that water look. So i claimed Ins on it and paid the 100 on it.
I should have been smart and had unrooted and taken it to the sprint store and paid 35 for the warranty.

I'll second the NoDock. I bought the paid app and it was the only one of a few I found that worked reliably. No issues for me anymore. I'm not bothering with replacing my phone at Sprint as I plan to leave them as soon as Galaxy S2 comes out anyway.
This was a bug caused apparently by Skype for me, in fact almost all the bugs on my EVO 3D are coming from Skype.
No Skype running or logged out, no problem.

That app worked for me, But its caused by a broken charging port, I unrooted my phone and s-on took it sprint showed them the car dock problem and the speaker on straight into calls and they replaced my evo.

Anyone nail down the HW cause of the Black Screen of Death (Sprint wont fix mine)

So pretty simple, I got the notorious Black Screen of Death that happens to a lot of epic users. No Samsung/Boot animation logo displayed on boot, but the phone boots successfully. I can have touch response, along with my soft keys lighting up. I have tried every single possible fix for the Epic 4g, including spare batteries, ODIN, etc.
I've searched through a ton of threads on XDA, unfortunately all of them end on "go to Sprint". I went to the store today and was told because I've had my phone 13 months, It's no longer covered by warranty and they refuse to do the $35 replacement. Right now I have only $40 to my name, so the $100 Samsung is quoting me for a fix isn't possible atm. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what exact HW part is failing? I'm an EE, so working with tiny electronics doesn't phase me. Idk if i should look for a blown cap./chip, disconnected wire, or a bad solder joint. I'd like to have a plan before I go into it. Does anyone have any ideas? If i can buy a spare part I'd gladly do it.
I don't really have a solution to the screen of death, but you can sell your epic to Sprint or Bestbuy for like 40$ and add the 40$ you have left and purchase another.
http://m.cowboom.com/index.cfm?page=details&contentID=850763
Maybe just odin again. I had no samsung logo on one odin and then I odined the same thing and it fixed it. I think its a sw issue not hw.

If that's the case could you point me towards the thread or give me a vague direction? My Epic is in about 8 pieces on my desk right now and I'm thinking of a full reassembly to at least make sure none of the cables have come loose.
Here's a tear down video for the epic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeO89VGAPuU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
If you ribbon cable is damage it cost between 5$ -10$ to get another one.
Thx for the info. As a follow-up heres what my cable looked like when I took it apart: instagram com/p/Ow3Jj4uyW6
It looks like the sliding of the cable wears down the thin black base of the cable, causing a short to occur on the cable. I've ordered a replacement and will update when it gets here
Good to hear you found the problem, btw do you have TEP? Sprint would have fixed it for free if you took it there.

Nope, hence why I'm at DIY stage right now. I usually don't get TEP because most software problems I can fix, but I never expected a manufacturing defect

[not SOLVED] Phone keeps not charging!

OK... I keep having this problem where when even plugged up my phone is discharging.... Sometimes ill get lucky and it works and charges but most of the time it just starts dying and goes down to 0% so when phone accidently unplugs from charger the thing just dies and i have to try to get it to hook up without turning it on in hopes of after usually half hour trying it catches and starts charging.... Please help! Does this on any rom. Battery does not have bulge. Charger could be the culprit but i have even tried different chargers

Sounds more like a bad micro usb cable or jack to me...
or battery
I wouldn't assume charge issues are necessarily related to the OS, I would start with Cable, Battery, and then micro connector
in that order.
Well all I have is a screwy Verizon brand cable and multiple LG cables... Never had any problems until now

I guess the other thing worth checking is what is using your battery.
I've found that if I'm tethering a 4G connection and have the phone set to never sleep I don't get very good charge rates.
I think the fact that the micro usb connector has such small conductors probably bottle necks current flow, it would be interesting to see if having a high current capable power supply attached to the usb port would overcome the devices current drain, when being used heavily.
But again the internal micro usb jack is fragile, if this problem persists, I can see bad solder joints, or broken conductors being common.
I've took apart phone pushed the little pins back in the charge port not all the way but so they are even, cleaned the crap out of the charge port and it seems that might fix it

well that may help, but I think my point was the actual pins that solder to the circuit board could be an issue too, but that's a trivial fix for any tech that is familiar with soldering. Or even replacing the jack, but you need to illuminate all other possibilities, if that is the issue, I'm sure you can find a repair tech to reflow some solder or replace the jack.

Everytime I've experienced this issue it's been the cord. Some will charge and allow me to transfer stuff. Some will just charge and some do nothing. I stopped going cheap on em. Have had one for a year now that has never messed up. My wife has been through 3 or 4 for her Evo (HTC cord). Hit the pc section somewhere and buy em like that. Better quality and usually less expensive then one with a phone logo on it.
Hope you get it working. That's always a pain in the butt.

Note 2 not charging nor being recognized

Hello,
My phone suddenly stopped charging yesterday night. There is no physical or water damage to the handset. USB on the computer wont detect it and it wont even charge. I have tried changing roms too but it wont get detected. I bought the device from newegg and i have a warranty for replacement till jan 31st but now since usb is not being detected i cannot flash stock rom via odin. I tried googling for methods to flash stock rom without using usb cable but there is nothing that i can find. Please can anyone help me on this ?
Thank you
You might have tried but just to be sure.have you tried using a different usb cable?

Yes I tried with 3 different USB cables. It just started charging but the red led is sometime dark red and sometimes kinda weak. It seems to me like the port has shorted. There was a crazy snow storm here yesterday and so it water vapor might be shorting the port. I just wanna get back to stock rom.
Please help someone help me.. I've even tried discharging the capacitors by removing the battery and pressing the power button for a min or two.
Thank you
What about mobile odin? It shoukd allow you to install the stock rom through your sd card.

I have the rom ALJ3 on my sd card and when i go to odin by pressing the volume down+home+ power i cant see the rom there. It just says downloading. O dont know if i am doing something wrong here
Solved
Since I suspected it to be water vapor I heated my phone over the gas stove(held it in my hand leaving some distance between the stove and the phone) once it became hot the water vapor must have evaporated and my phone started charging and got connected to the computer as well.
Guess the snow storm was the culprit. I reverted back to stock rom successfully as well.
Thank you every one for your inputs.
Im glad it worked out for you. I know this wouldnt be fair thing to do but if you get the chance id suggest you return or exchange it as im sure some damage is already done and it will probably reappear again in the near future. Good luck.

I definitely want to get it replaced but I do not think they will coz now there does not seem to be a problem with it. Il wait for a day or two,if the problem still persists then I will definitely get it replaced
Hi there?
Did the problem re-apear with you? cause i have the exact symptoms but without snow or something, i was just using it when suddenly the application frozen, so i put it on the charger and it wouldn't charge, tried on USB, nothing, tried to remove the battery, sim and memory card, still nothing, tried to press the power button while the battery is removed, nothing.
Any suggestions?
Is there a red faint led sensor on top when u try to power it on ?

Just encountered this problem two days ago and I am confused why this happened.
My N7100 wont charge and could not be detected in my desktop/laptop.
In my case, I charged my phone since it was below 20%.
When I plug it in, the symbol indicated it was charging.
An hour later, when I checked my phone, it wasn't charging at all.
Even the charging indicator was off, and the battery symbol has no "lightning".
I tried different chargers, wall outlet, even in the computer.
Still no luck.
I did a factory reset, thinking it was a ROM issue, still nothing.
Any help/suggestions/recommendations is highly welcome.
Did anybody solve this issue, It is happening to mine... No dropping, accidents or moisture...
i'm also having this issue. tried several different chargers, light says charging, in settings under battery it says charging but it's not. i'm just losing more power. tried charging with phone off and same thing. tried cleaning port, nothing. i don't know if the battery is just shot or i need the usb port replaced.
Literally just started for me right now, and I bought the phone off Swappa like a month ago...The USB flex is $20 and easy to replace, but I want to know if there's an actual fix. No soldering required.
EDIT: Just plugged it into my Samsung charger and it started work again randomly... Doesn't work with the dollar store cable I was using though. Could be that the cable went bad?
Same here for a week
It started a week ago when I tried a $5 dollar cable/charger from eBay. Now I tried a dozen cable all of them work with another phone. It was random not charging one day, charging the other day. But since yesterday, fails to work completely, and battery fully drained.
Yesterday evening I tried a charger/cable from a friend and it seemed to work, so i'll try again today and provide an update later.
U have encountered the issue before. Brought it to the service Centre for repair. When I got it back from the Centre, they told me that the sub motherboard was faulty. Hope this helps.

You're probably joking about being easy, it's very simple but not easy as shown on this video. And without appropriate tool, it's just heading for trouble.
Anyway I searched for the replacement part and the screw driver, it's about 60$, delivery in Europe included, couldn't find the part except in the US. The USB charger is $16, shipping $30, plus the screw driver 11€+5€ local.
However couldn't find the "whatever the name is of this blue flat stuff" to remove the display. Anyone knows how it's named?

It's a prying tool. They're cheap on eBay also. They're just plastic. You can use your fingernails if they're long enough.
Also I wasn't joking. It's a regular philips screwdriver (cross, but very small). It's the same one used to open the iPhone 4/4S (confirmed by me). After you take out the 6 or so screws from under the battery cover, you just run the prying tool through the gap along the display, and lift the midsection off. With the board exposed, unscrew the piece of plastic covering the USB flex and take it off. Then just pop off the flex cable and pop the new one in. Do everything backwards and there you go.
If you look for a kit to open the iPhone 4/4S, you'll get the screwdriver and plastic prying tool. I don't know where you're located but the part cost me $18 shipped. However for me it was a waste of time because the Note 2 I bought from eBay had its IMEI blacklisted, among other issues. So I returned it.

Thanks for the prying tool name, found a kit in the US for $12 including shipping and $2 in Hong-Kong
Searched again for the charger port, and found it in the EU for $15 and $8 in Hong-Kong
The procedure is very simple, but not easy, requires to be very gentle and patient (as the video shows), not sure I have both. Including my bad sight, it's going to be tough, but there won't be a local repair shop to top that pricing!
EDIT: They had to change the IMEI instead, couldn't they actually whitelist it?

Wow, didn't realize you were in the great white north , well you'll get a chance to get to know your GS4 more intimately.
It's not that bad, I've repaired a whole bunch of phones, mostly glass and screen replacements and toilet salvage when the wife dropped her GS2 in the terlet, battery pull and disassembly in one minute flat, total disassembly and stuck phone in the AC vent and left overnight, next day reassembly and all was well.
Used. YouTube as a guide.

You could take the part into the shop and have them do the swap. I did that recently with a rear camera replacement. I had bought the replacement camera on eBay.
