DashClock Word of the Day Extension - Nexus 4 Themes and Apps

Okay Guys,
Just for fun, as a little side-project, I wanted to play with the DashClock extensions API, and being a self-proclaimed "word nerd" I figured a cool "Word of the Day" extension might be fun to put together, so that's what I did .
It allows you to currently display a new word on your locksceen each day, and select from a variety of sources, such as Merriam-Webster, Yahoo, TheFreeDictionary, and others. Clicking the item takes you to the feed source for additional details, or you can elect to select from alternate lookup sources, such as Google and Wikipedia.
For the less intellectually inclined, you can even choose The Urban Dictionary as a daily word source :

Thanks guys. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Next release I am looking to give the option to auto-rotate the sources on a specified frequency, so that you can see more than one word per day if you wish.

Will give this a try.

Ha, Ha, that's my own personal extension that tells me the status of my garage door at any given time. It interfaces with my personal "OpenSezMe" garage door opener app that communicates with an Arduino for toggling a relay to open / close the door (app has come a long way since that video).
The DashClock extension receives PUSH notifications using GCM (Google Cloud Messaging), that the Arudino sends out when the reed sensor attached to it changes its state (open / closed), so I instantly know at any given time if the garage door is open or closed (or remains open too long), be it via a regular remote, the keypad, or my app on my or my wife's phone, etc
But I digress

I wish it was "portable" enough to do that. That was my goal at the outset, but as time / development went on, I realized there is way too much configuration unique to my envorinment (location, home network topograhy, hardware, etc).

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions, ideas, etc.
Working now on a couple additional features:
Dismiss / clear word & definition on lock screen when clicked (versus persistent), and not display again until new word is received from selected source. Essentially seeing once a day and disappearing once clicked.
When in persistent mode, rotate between all sources on pre-defined basis, so you can see more than one word / day if desired.

This is fun. Urban Dictionary is hilarious. Thanks for this.

This is amazing, thanks

This app is very good! I'll go rate it five in the play store immediately!

how do I stay logged in at XDA

I use dozens and dozens of forums across the interwebs, and yet I can't seem to stay logged in at XDA and do on every other forum I use. Every time I leave and come back, I have to log in... it gets real real annoying. Am I missing some setting, or is that just the way it is here?

Yes but as far as I recall last time I checked it doesn't allow you to create a master password which is a bad lack or security imo.
Firefox is much better.
I don't see this problem, All what I'm dong is to check the "Remember Me" box, and it does it all.

Mozilla Firefox xD
If you use LastPass, you can make a master password and set sites to automagically log you in. This doesn't work on all sites, and some sites will fight LastPass over login protocols, so it's kind of a trial and error thing to get it to gel right with your online experience. Facebook for example works well. Bookmark the root site (Facebook.com) and set it to auto login. It just works. And it works in all the major browsers, even little ole Chrome.
I prefer Firefox... well, Pale Moon... well, Pale Moon Portable, haha. Same difference. Between Adblock Plus, NoScript, and Cookie Whitelist With Buttons (silly name, don't laugh, it does good) and a search box, Chrome just can't keep up. I've been fortunate enough to have avoided the memory leaks that Chrome users say made them switch, and Pale Moon is plenty fast enough for me. I could run Windows 2000 if all I cared about was speed. You start adding features, it slows down a hair, it's a fair trade.
Anyway, I've checked "Remember Me" when I log in, and it still likes to log me out after ~5 minutes of inactivity. Cookies are fine but I'm only accepting first-party cookies (i.e. from xda-developers.com while I'm here). NoScript is blocking a script from netshelter.net. It's allowing them from google-analytics.com, googleapis.com, and of course xda-developers.com.

[APP] Barometric - Barometer app and widget for Galaxy Nexus

A good while ago, when I got my Xoom I almost finished a barometer app. Unfortunately the project was put away, but inspired by korr92's post today I decided to do some work on the app.
It is in early alpha, and there are still some bugs to iron out (see post below). But, I need feedback, so feel free to try it out.
Beware that I'm planning to release this as a paid app on the Market when (err...if) I finish it. But, it will stay free for a while, and I will post well before an eventual release so that you can download the app for free.
The regular app will update the pressure almost instantly, while the widget will update when the devices wakes up, or every 10 minutes if the device stays awake .

Application is attached to this post, and can also be downloaded from here.
Changelog:
2012-01-22:
-Widgets are now available in both 2x2 and 3x3 sizes.
2012-01-17:
-Enabled hardware acceleration and made improvements to the application so that hardware acceleration works as it should
-Reduced size of images used. Smaller APK.
2012-01-16:
-Improved graphics both in application and widget. The barometer now contains text ("Stormy", "Rain", "Change", "Fair" and "Very dry") describing the weather associated with the current pressure.
-Reduced size of APK
-Main application now has a "historic dial", which can mark a previous pressure value. To set it just tap the barometer, and it will be set to the current value. It will be stored until you tap the barometer again.
-Widget will now update every 30 second when the device is awake. It will not update when the device is asleep, unless other applications update. If this happens the barometer widget will also be updated.
Known bugs:
-Sometimes the pressure will be show as zero (the dial points straight up). This is some minor bug that I have yet to track down, where the service that updates the pressure is getting killed before the pressure is received.
Update: I think I have solved this now.
Planned features:
-Set the altitude, as this influences the pressure
-Mark in the barometer the corresponding weather for pressure values (e.g. illustration of a sun when the pressure is high) (DONE)
-More widget sizes (DONE)
-Graphing feature
-Trend
-Pressure reading in text
-Whatever you may suggest

Did you experience the bug I listed in the second post? It seems like it is rather inconsistent, and a little harder to track down than I thought.
I will try to get some work done on the app tonight, hopefully accompanied by the upload of a new build.
Theres no Widget
That's strange. I did a clean install on my Xoom, and the widget is there. It also works in the phone and the emulator(s). Is the widget missing for anyone else?
Hope you iron out this, looks like it could be amazing.
Swyped from my tuna surprise with extra back bacon.
Thanks nitrox1!

The widget is very large. It would be nice to have one that is 1x1, maybe a digital readout with a trending arrow.

I'm pretty sure, you must disable "force GPU-Rendering" in your dev-settings like in the other Barometer-App, too
Hardware acceleration is a good thing, so I have now explicitly enabled hardware acceleration, and made the necessary adjustments to the app so that it works with hardware acceleration. In other words, a new build is out.
Regarding failed downloads: I suspect that the downloads from XDA are not always stable. Have uploaded the build to my Dropbox account as well. Download link can be found in the first post.
Now, off to my day job. Next feature coming up is input of your altitude, so that the barometer is calibrated.
Gonna try it. Will report back later this day!

[TIP/TRICK] How to get ICS blue in Text Notify Premium (& possibly other apps too)

[TIP/TRICK] How to get ICS blue in Text Notify Premium (& possibly other apps too)
I have been using Text Notify forever now on all my phones, so when I saw the Premium version is available (and for only 99c), I jumped at the chance to get custom colors for my "toast" style text notifications and support a deserving dev. Instead of listing all my favorite features of the app, I will leave you with a link.
I wrote the dev inquiring about how I can get the ICS blue. (those color slider things are not my strong point). He wrote me back almost immediately letting me know an easy little trick to accomplish this, and told me it was alright with him if I shared it here. He also added that the trick is not limited to his app, but can also work with other apps. I'm sure most of you themers already know these workarounds, but for others like me I hope this will be useful.
So on to the ICS blue color trick for Text Notify Premium..
1. Open Root Explorer and go to the highest folder level you can (should have acct, cache, config, d, and data folders ect.)
2. Navigate to data/data/com.riley.textnotifydonate/shared_prefs/
3. Long press com.riley.textnotifydonate_preferences.xml, choose Open With, then select Text Editor.
4. Change the value of the color you want to change (textcolor = text color,
textbackground = text background, emailcolor = email text color,
emailbackground = email notification background, if I remember everything correctly). Change the value to -13388315. That will be the ICS Blue.
5. Click the back button, choose Yes to save changes. You [must] delete the .bak file it creates.
6. Open TN and click on the setting you changed just to make sure everything changed correctly. It should be the value you want when you open it up.
Click to collapse
That was part of the conversation I had with the dev this morning before he added an outline color, rounded edges, & time to display the notification. You can change the outline color the same way. Here is a screenshot of how I have mine set up:

Hmmm.. The idea of the app, to me anyways..is that when your playing lets say, GTA3, you dont have to stop running from the cops to see a "you have reached 25% of your mobile data" text message. However, if you are beating up on a hooker and you get a "Honey I just went into labor" text message, you can think about pausing the game and going to the hospital. Adding a quick reply that would pause the game, or worse, open a quick reply when you touch the toast notif would imo defeat the purpose of the app. But again that is just my opinion and the dev can/will add any option he wants, that's just my thoughts on the idea.
EDIT: Maybe you would enjoy the quick reply feature of "Handcent" or a similar SMS app? If you haven't tried that yet maybe give it a go?.

App similar to OurGrocery that can also sync with a PC

I am looking for a app that can do a few things. I want to make a to-do list, and / or a grocery list. It needs to be able to install and sync between more than one android and a pc.
I want to be able to goto the grocery with my lady and both have the app open. When we find a item either of us checks it off, it syncs with the app on the other phone and is marked completed. Also I want to be able to make the list from my pc at home. Basically ourgroceries does all this except for the home pc part.
Anyone know a app that will fit the bill?

Hey no problem, it took me forever to figure out why the mobile app couldn't do the boxes but the pc could. One part evernote fails horribly is creating sub-bullets/indents on the mobile app. Drives me insane.

I use OurGroceries via the web and sync it to two Android phones. You create an account on the website. Then on the phone in the settings you send a request to the email address to the address attached to the web account.
I've been using honeydew since my blackberry days. Very simple interface, sync works fine between 2 phones. Not sure if it has a pc option
I use our groceries from the pc and the phone. they have a website at ourgroceries.com where you can log in with the same credentials as you did on the phone and it's flawless. It can be edited and sync in real time.

What's up with Message+ texting as default and...

So Sammy or Verizon made this the default texting app. I'm not liking that I can't even set an individual text alert sound per contact. I even went into contacts, added the extra field "Message Tone" and selected a unique one for given contact but always defaults to same stupid sound for all texts from all contacts. doh
Do I have to go 3rd party app to get what I want?
Nope. I disabled that crap and am using the real message app. It's there...

This is definitely a Verizon App and I'm uninstalling and turning off as many of them as I can. I don't even want to their cloud.
Thanks for the replies. Didn't even realize it was a damn Verizon bloat app. Going to go back to "Chomp SMS" I think.
I think it has some great features. such as being able to text on wifi if there is no signal. if someone send you a link it gives you a preview of the site before the need to click on it. it also handles pictures that have been sent back and forth very nicely. I could go on but check it out.

I was just going to say this. The vzw app is really nice. I have it on my Note 12.2 tablet too. Wifi texting is awesome. It's also integrated with glympse, which is so incredibly useful. my wife and I use it all the time.
Just because it's made by Verizon doesn't mean it's some hellishly crappy battery sucking phone melting app
I started using it last week. I discovered it by accident. It allows me to install it on my computers, my N7, and my phone. I can text from any of these devices and receive texts on all of them.
It is missing some of the cool functionality of the Samsung stock app, but it is definitely worth having. It's kind of like what Apple did with their "being able to text from phone, iPad, or Mac" thing.
Thats kind of cool.

If it works then I could stop using MightyText to text from my computer.
Cool will check this out, thx! I use handcent and pay $9.99 for the gold plan to backup all my mms/sms and can use on ipad, windows to text a year. Will check out verizons app more!
: )
Reporting back and it isnt the prettiest or hardly customizable at all but it works and honestly no complaints. Putting Textra and Mightytext sms app sync on the backburner while I try this out.
I installed the update in the google play market for this app and it allows much more customization with fonts, colors, backgrounds, list types, chat bubbles.
First Verizon App I like and use lol. Saying it here.:good:

Not sure if I had applied the update or not. Can you tell me if it allows individual per contact notifications assignments?

It allows individual sounds for different people.
Other than that its texting that works through wifi and my pc.
OK, that desktop app is pretty cool. On my iMac (OSX Yosemite) it wants access to my contacts, then my phone number, then sent me a text with a code that I popped into the app and wham! All my texts are now on my desktop app. Thanks for the heads-up!
BTW - I am still using the default Android text app on my phone and not the Verizon Message+ and I still seem to get the full functionality, so you can have the best of both worlds. One caveat - My Android contacts were not shared on my iMac so some of the desktop app messages show only the phone number and not the contact name. Looks like it is time to synchronize!

Wow, what a surprise that this app is actually worthwhile. I'm not sure I'm curious enough to stray away from Hangouts though, I get a lot of use out of that app. If only verizon would allow wifi texting to 3rd party apps.
Is it a battery/cpu hog? I'm hesitant to believe this is a well constructed app

I've been using it since yesterday. I haven't noticed any battery drain from using it.

Is the "cloud" texting intuitive enough to justify jumping ship from hangouts? I'm really torn here.
Honestly. Just use it for a whole day.
Only disadvantage I see is that its not as polished and if your friends are using hangouts then it might not work.
