LTE OTA update today? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/18/t-mobile-lte-network-expansion/
Starting today, an over-the-air update will begin rolling out to existing Galaxy Note II handsets that enables the previously dormant LTE radio. Which, if you've been keeping close tabs on Magenta's LTE plans, falls right on schedule with its previously announced 2013 deployment timeline.

OH Yes!

Yay! ! Waiting on teshx

Now the question for the many of us who are rooted...what to do? hard decision. I hate to give up root...

Would be nice. Since now there is a very small pocket of LTE in Queens, NY, I can actually try it out. I just hope that LTE buildout would be faster than Sprint's.

I'm in te same boat... HSPA+ is plenty fast enough for a few days until someone posts a new ROM with that update.

I already know what to do. most likely the same as you, keep root and wait for a nice new ROM. BUT I really want to test out the LTE speeds so I can show off to my boss who has an iphone 5 on AT&T and the only thing he has over me is the data speed!

What does root have to do with it?? You mean having to wait a little for teshx? Or do you think you can't upgrade?

Haha I am in Brooklyn (Bensonhurst) but I may pass by Queens to test it out. I had Sprint LTE and it was 2x slower than current HSPA+ speeds I get with Note2. Hopefully T-Mobile won't disappoint in speed department.

If you are rooted, chances are you have a "modified" status on your phone which means you will not be able to get the update OTA. You will either have to wait for someone to extract and post a stock or custom rom in order to manually flash it to the phone or unroot the phone and reset the counters and then you will be able to update OTA.
I simply cannot unroot and give up:
1. Free tethering
2. Custom auto correct samsung keyboard
3. multi-windows (any app)
4. Debloat and custom kernels (better battery life)
5. etc.

T-Mobile’s LTE Network Gets Official Trial Run As LTE Update Releases For Galaxy Note II
March 18, 2013 David Beren 8 Comments
T-Mobile’s LTE network is beginning to show some signs of life as a number of sites just posted some hands-on results conducted in New York City last week. That means some good news for Galaxy Note II owners as the long-awaited LTE software update finally rolls out beginning today.
The tests, conducted by The Verge, Engadget, LaptopMag and CNET, we’re getting a first look at what the network is truly capable of. There’s a caveat of course, that all of these tests are running on microcells with absolutely no traffic on it so real-world speeds will be theoretically be slower with thousands of customers on a tower at any given time.*As was case with the HSPA+ rollout, the use of new tower equipment along the necessary LTE hardware should result in better coverage for everyone says T-Mobile Product Management Director Randy Meyerson. That’s good news for customers who may choose to ignore T-Mobile’s first round of LTE handsets as improved coverage is always welcome.
As for those of you looking for the BlackBerry Z10, T-Mobile’s first LTE-ready*BlackBerry, that’s still on the calendar before the end of March. The carrier says LTE is ready in both Las Vegas and Kansas City*and*all that’s left is flipping the switch allowing customers officially on the network. With the promise of a network that covers 200 million people with LTE before the end of 2013, T-Mobile’s rollout is bound to ramp up quickly.
As for the speeds themselves, LaptopMag was able to hit download speeds as high as 58.8Mbps, with uploads running as high as 25.5Mbps. Engadget faired a little better pushing above the 60Mbps mark hitting a high of 62.13Mbps and a download high of 25.67Mbps. Overall, speeds appeared to average well into the high 50′s on the download and in the high trends on the upload side. Remember the earlier caveat though. a
One major advantage for T-Mobile’s LTE network and a selling point the company will certainly use when it rolls out its rumored “Dual 4G” marketing later this year is HSPA+ 42Mbps as a fallback. The ability to fall back on speeds that T-Mobile has long claimed rival competitor LTE networks is an advantage T-Mobile will attempt to use against the likes of Verizon.
For now, T-Mobile highlights that its LTE network will be focused on measured adoption, with an emphasis on higher-end handsets focusing on the technically savvy, media heavy-set of customers. As for*how long it will take before T-Mobile has their LTE network rolled out to more than two cities? That’s a great question that T-Mobile is playing coy with answering. With plans to have 100 million customers cover in LTE before summer, we’re certain we’ll find more cities lighting up in the near future.

is AT&T Note II compatible with T-Mobile LTE?
OK so I'm currently using an AT&T Galaxy Note II on T-Mobile. I've been able to load T-Mobile stock and custom Roms on the AT&T Note 2 as well as the stock and custom radio firmware from the T-Mobile note 2.
So does anyone know if the AT&T Note II will support the new T-Mobile LTE? Is it compatible with a simple radio firmware upgrade?
---------- Post added at 07:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:29 AM ----------
Would love to know when their going to flip the switch on the Los Angels and Southern California region.

Well Sprint's LTE markets won't even be in the double digits until 2013. And a couple years after that to be "nationwide coverage". The vast majority of Sprint's customers will be on 3G for the foreseeable future.

I haven't seen anyone else talking about the Sprint LTE. Have they just been testing it in different areas or have you seen official Sprint tests? I googled, but couldn't find anyone else talking about it. I'd be interested to see what other people's experience with it was, i.e. if it has been improving, signal strength, etc.
And sadly it lasted less than an hour. Luckily I caught it. But everything was extremely fast. It was awesome. If LTE gets full bars in my house I might consider getting rid of my internet...

And why don't I? Show me their national WiMax coverage that they rolled out in the last 2 years.... right, it doesn't exist. Same will be for LTE. Sorry, but just because Sprint says they're going to roll it out by the end of 2013 doesn't mean anything to me or any other slightly skeptical person.
Believe me, I'm pulling for them. I'd love to see Sprint step it up big time and challenge AT&T and Verizon's LTE efforts, but I find it hard to believe that Sprint will ever be able to catch up. Even if they completely covered their 3G network with LTE in that time (which they just can't physically/monetarily do), they won't be catching Verizon or even AT&T by that point.
Lol right sprint won't do it everyone forgets clear was the primary doing the rollouts and yeah. The BOD wants this to happen I am sure they will make sure it happens by the deadline or before and then once that is done they can hopefully jump it down to the 800mhz band as well. I think it will and if not 24 months from now I will move on but there are more posts of LTE then I saw of WiMAX when that started.
Not to mention other cell companies that work with sprint well one anyways atm is also helping.

When Sprint saw the writing on the wall for WiMax, they did the smart thing and stopped investing in it.
Good for them. They instead began their LTE preparations along with beginning their Network Vision deployment. They accelerated their 800mhz refarm.

Sprint has never been able to compete on coverage - 4g or otherwise. Hell, their native CDMA network is smaller than T-Mobile's network. That said, Sprint has a big ol boatload of spectrum, which means they can continue to provide unlimited data (or eventually, faster speeds) far longer than their competition can.
Now, I'm a T-Mobile customer as well as a Sprint customer, and was about to drop my Sprint line for a prepaid line, but Sprint (and T-Mobile) are on the upswing and I very much like the progress they're making.

I think Sprint could potentially do better than AT&T with their LTE rollout as AT&T seems to be going pretty slowly about it. However, VZW is lighting up more and more areas every few weeks, so I don't think anyone will catch them until VZW has started moving to another network standard. I have read that Sprint's LTE plans are very aggressive, so it could just be they are installing and testing the network in several large markets right now to turn on several cities all at once rather than just a small handful like AT&T did at the start.

Interesting theory, but Verizon and even ATT will complete their rollout before Sprint does. So by the time Sprint gets to enjoying LTE across the network, Verizon and ATT will be looking at deploying VoLTE.
They can have buttloads of spectrum, but they don't have the resources to compete with rollouts or to to advance in a timely manner. They will always be playing third base.
Heck, MetroPCS rolled out LTE before them (Verizon too, for that matter).
I managed to get a weak signal in parts of the KC metro, probably coming from the area around the Sprint Campus in Overland Park. I may drive closer later today and see what kind of speed I can get.

Sprint 4GLTE arrives July 15th

Summer is here and so is the first wave of Sprint LTE markets. Today, CEO, Dan Hesse, announced that Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City and San Antonio will have LTE launched on July 15th. Additional market launches in 2012 will be announced later this year. By the end of 2013, we expect to have largely completed the build out of the 4G LTE nationwide network covering 250 million people across the United States.
As part of the Sprint’s Network Vision promise, we are building an all-new, nationwide 3G and 4G LTE network. This means that whether you are using a smartphone to share a video or to check the Web, Sprint 4G LTE will make it faster. In addition to LTE, the new network provides significant enhancements to Sprint 3G service. You can expect to experience better signal strength, less dropped/blocked calls, faster data speeds, expanded coverage and better overall performance as the improvements roll out across the country.
“While other carriers are simply rolling out their version of a 4G LTE network, we are rolling out an all-new network that will also significantly improve the 3G and voice experience over time – at no extra charge to the customer,” said Hesse.

Sprints network needs a lot of work I hope these upgrades end up being worth the wait. The last thing the US market needs is something bad happening to Sprint. T-Mobile is already kind of iffy.
As usual, for folks in other cities the best informed speculation about future rollouts is to be found at S4GRU.
What the hell!! Stillwater, Oklahoma has nearly 50,000 people! Why would we not be first to get LTE? This is a bad move by Sprint. I know at LEAST a couple people that might switch carriers because of this, so they'll be out 10's of dollars. You should all demand Stillwater be fist on the list. It's important to you.
I'm done with Sprint. Way too little, way too late. The second my Verizon S3 arrives, i'm porting my number over and buying out the rest of my Sprint contract. It's worth it to me to switch to a carrier that has.. oh let's see... data and voice! Not to mention already having an LTE network in place already and growing all the time.
I am confused why people are upset, they announced these cities months ago. How is this such a surprise. I live in Baltimore we where added to the first round, but won't be lit up on july 15th. My 3g is pretty good in Baltimore so i can wait a month or two.

The Sprint LTE rollout schedule is being tracked here. They plan to cover over 130M population with LTE by end of this year and the entire Sprint footprint by 2013. Then they'll start rolling out LTE on 800Mhz which will significantly increase coverage.

Sprints new "Spark" LTE 1GBPS LTE Service

I have been contemplating leaving Sprint for their terrible data speeds and lost promises of a reliable and fast data network and now read about yet another attempt at an even faster LTE network rolling out capable of 1GB/ps speeds.
I never got a reliable Wimax connection, still dont have a reliable LTE connection.
Do I really want to hold out hope and wait again for a real working network or just jump ship now [END RANT]
http://newsroom.sprint.com/presskits/sprint-spark.htm

Sprint Spark
Sprint Spark is a super-high-speed capability offering 50-60 Megabits per second (Mbps) peak speeds today with increasing speed potential over time.
Sprint Spark is a super-high-speed capability offering 50-60 Megabits per second (Mbps) peak speedstoday with increasing speed potential over time. Given Sprint’s spectrum and technology assets, it is technically feasible to deliver more than 2 Gigabits per second (Gbps) per sector of over-the-air speed.
Sprint demonstrated 1 Gigabit per second over-the-air speed on Oct. 30 at a Sprint lab near Silicon Valley, Calif.
I got real excited about this also since I'm in Tampa, but I have read in a couple places that you will have to have one 01 the new tri band phones . Iam thinking of leaving Spnnr de to the spotty service and am not sure if I want to renew for another two years to test this out

Yeah its pretty much useless if you dont have a triband phone.
And the only ones that are going to be triband so far are the Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy Mega, LG G2, and the HTC one max....and I think some hot spot devices.
This is good news but im still jumping ship I'll wait till next year or so when they do have their network data on point and better tri band phones as to im not a fan of tge G2 or S4 mini or the mega or htc one max lol. I think Sprint indicated in a press release it would be enabled after launch, but maybe that only applies to another phone.

Sorry to burst your bubbles but it wont reach 1gps on devices..... if anyone thought that it may beat Verizons AWS LTE, in select markets. Go to S4GRU.com to learn more information, and upcoming devices, and network info.
No one really needs 1gps bandwidth on their mobile device unless you dont have internet at home even 1gps is still too much for that purpose. With that beign said anything over 100mbps for a mobile device is too much.

famous last words. I remember people saying that one needed 100MB hard drives either back in the 80's. Look at today.
And there is a push going for services provided by the cloud. I can see uses for more bandwidth, and even thought much. The biggest issue I see is more the limitations of the devices because of the hardware or software. Then again, I see smartphones just portable computers with phone service.
And even, and if, the service does hit, doesn't mean that the we're getting reliable and steady 1G throughput. I see it more as overall, we're going to be more bandwidth. And since it's suppose to be triband and switch quickly, hopefully that helps in the reliability, maybe even maintain, higher bandwidth.
I'm ditching Sprint as soon as my contract is up, fed up of no LTE in my area when everything else has LTE. Without wifi my phone is useless with slow sprint data speeds.

Greatest decision you could make, I know it's not the same for everyone and some people have great speeds with them but I friggin despise sprint so badly with their less than dial up like speeds, over here in Bakersfield, CA it's T- Mobile or Verizon or GTFO!

Well... While I think 1Gbps is unrealistic down or up at the moment for an individual phone.... I do expect the backhauls for Tri-band LTE towers are being upgraded to 1Gbps. Japan has proven that there's a market for it with speeds as high as 150Mbps down (per phone!) so I certainly believe we're slowly heading that way. In addition, by moving up to that high of a backhaul now it should potentially avoid serious upgrades like they are doing now for a few years at least.

To be fair...on has to remember why "4G LTE" is called "LTE". Because the actual 4G standard requires 1Gbps in low mobility applications (stationary, walking speeds) and 100Mbps for high mobility. The "LTE" moniker was created to bridge the gap until actual 4G tech like this came around.

Sadly I think we're still a way from there - even "LTE-A" will probably not reach that goal. Part of it is a lack of global 1Gbps global tunnels except in academia.... so even if you get 1Gbps local it may not do much if the file is hosted on a T1 equivalent line.
Considering what Comcast charges for their 100mbps service, I don't think that this will be something that will be covered under the $100 everything plan...
So this mean our Note 3 wouldn't have that capability?

Thinking twice about upgrading with T-Mobile

Anyone else have reservations about note 4 or any other smartphone with t-mobile after this update debacle?

Not me. The value of service and *relative* hands off approach to device customization leave me happy overall with T-Mobile.

I have to agree as well even though I am pretty upset that T-Mobile hasn't released the kitkat update for our device. Next time I'll get the international version of the Note or just go with the Nexus line.

What do you mean by service? For me, customer service is no better or worse than I received from Sprint. Much worse compared to Verizon.
And coverage is only decent in metropolitan areas. Better than Sprint here in Seattle. But, again, worse than Verizon. Wonder how some of the more off market carriers fare compared to t-mobile. I know there's always a steady migration of nexus users to other month to month carriers... I'm just not a fan of shady marketing tactics where a carrier tries to delay updates to the point of a phone being obsolete.

I meant service in regards to cellular service. I am in the Seattle market as well. I have not seen any speedtest results that come close for data performance. I get good to great performance from the network in the places I go and spend time. All at a significantly lower price than other carriers. With unlimited high speed data. I use 40-80gb a month, Tmo doesn't seem to care.
In my workplace tmo kills Verizon in regards to data & reception. We had to install a DAS system to get the other carriers customers devices to work reliably. Tmo didn't need help in the vast majority of the building.
Feel free to choose to base your carrier choice on the update practices for one device. I will not. I also don't see a way for others to change my priorities and have no illusions of being able to change others.

Don't understand your last statement about illusions and priorities but, as I mentioned, data is also decent for me in Seattle metropolitan and the only "one" device that's of concern to me is the note lineup since I don't see myself using any other device in the foreseeable future.
But forget all that.... How are you pulling off 80gb without being throttled?

The bit about "illusions and priorities" meant that I doubt I can convince you to change your mind when it seems so adamant regarding the issues discussed.
As to the data use and throttling, I am on the unlimited Simple Choice plan. Unless you do something stupid they don't throttle you. Stupid is tethering foolishly and getting noticed. My average use is 40-60GB a month. I've hit 80+. Others routinely go over 200gb. AT&T & Verizon have a tough time topping that at significantly higher cost.
Note 4 doesn't wow as much as I thought honestly so I plan to stick with this phone for a while still. T-mobile never pushing updates is a bit of a PITA though. My previous phone was never updated past gingerbread so the developers couldn't get a working ICS build for it but the international version is working right now with Kitkat and still has quite a bit of activity in the development section.
Damn I cannot even get over 5mb download speeds 99% of the time with full signal on t-mobile I'd have to be downloading torrents nonstop to achieve your usage lol!

Agree with T-mobile dropped the ball. But value and speed is same or better than all the rest in NYC and Long Island. If you want better that that try DN5v2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541860
and install all S5 or Note 3 features and you are running latest 4.4.2 TW rom. Install the N7015 version and stay on stock kernel for a while before installing Agni. When you do switch to Agni look for the stable scheduler and also there is an update in the thread that fixing GPS and few other stuff.
So running all S5 stuff and stable with right setup.
good luck.

I'm actually not so adamant just greatly disappointed, especially since my reliance on wi-fi calling prevents me from flashing non t-mobile based rom. Thanks for advice, I'll look into the details of this plan.
I'm upset with their update system..but have no qualms with the service or plans..think i'll just go with a nexus or a moto X device and not deal with carrier garbage in the future..
