[Q] A better camera - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I dont like the quality of the pictures I take although I have set the quality to superfine. The pictures I take look a bit dark and I think that a phone with 8mp camera can take better pictures. Also, the pictures I take at night are not so good. Are there any tweaks or mods I can flash or even settings?
Waiting for your answers!

I found this guide really helpful. It's for the SGS3, but is good for the SGN2 too.

You may try turning on the "Low Light" shooting mode. Drastically improves brightness in low light situations without the usual graininess/noise.

And this is why I hate the Nexus camera

I made a thread the other day saying how 4.0.3 seemed to fix the focus issues. Well that's great, now maybe an update needs to fix the actual quality? I mean, this is TERRIBLE. Look how dull/dark the picture is on a perfectly sunny day.
After seeing this I took a look at the exif data and it shows a shutter speed of 1/3000? SERIOUSLY?????????? It needs to be around 1/600 to look bright and not so damn dull.
We seriously need manual controls on this camera phone. I'm usually one of the first ones to say, "it's just a phone, get a real camera if you want good pictures," but this is just damn ridiculous now. Pictures look like they came from a flip phone.
What's funny is it looks bright and excellent on the phone. When I first saw it on the phone, I thought, "wow that's a nice picture." Until I looked at it on the computer...

What's wrong with the EV controls? Or even the scene settings? I feel I have pretty much control over my pictures from my GN by trying different settings or even another camera app.
I tend to take mobile shots not to seriously as I use a DSLR on a daily basis.
Mobile cameras aren't "there" yet. Period. The older nokias took great mobile pictures, but somehow the necessity for high en cameras got lost in the transitions to smartphones. I've heard the (the name we won't speak) 4S camera is one of the better ones on the market? Tried that?

Maybe your monitor isn't set correctly. There's nothing terrible about that picture for a camera phone. It's underexposed by about 1/2 to 1 EV, but not terribly. Automatic metering is often off by that much; you can easily add an EV or 2 of compensation if you're not pleased with the results. Or just run it through Auto-Fix in the built-in editor, the results are actually very good in my experience.

My monitor is fine. It's not like this is the only picture I've ever seen on my computer.

No more excuses. Yes, mobile cameras are "there" now. Look at the galaxy s2. That phone takes excellent pictures, even better than the iphone 4s.
I don't usually take mobile shots seriously either unless they look absolutely terrible.
If this thing can shoot 1080p widescreen it should be able to take widescreen photos.

Doesn't mean you've seen them correctly.
Explain what you think is wrong with this photo, because I'm not seeing it.
EDIT: Histogram of your image attached. As I said, 1/2 to 1 EV underexposed, but there's no clipping in the shadows or highlights.
Just use another camera...I'm using miui v17 and it shoots widescreen and takes decent pictures with control over autofocus

Looks fine to me, but then again it is a phone
So many excuses.
I love my nexus, but it takes terrible photos. Simple as that.

Dude, that's not a bad pic at all. Yes, the GSII takes better pics, but that one isn't bad. If you need the best quality pics grab a DSLR or something.
You keep saying everyone is making excuses but you aren't answering any questions. I have taken great pictures with my camera. Would love to post some but I'm at work right now.
What questions?
If you guys don't think that picture looks bad, then you aren't someone who is really into photography.
Dull colors, dark, noisy as hell, grainy, etc.
Just did VERY QUICK adjustment for you. Is this more of what you're looking for??
Much better.
I think the issue here was the shutter speed. I have NO IDEA why it used a shutter speed of around 1/3000. That is WAY too fast to gather any decent amount of light on a cell phone camera.
I've been looking at other pictures I've taken with slower shutter speeds, and they look fine.
Sorry for freaking out guys. I think my issue here was I took a picture in an area with plenty of light, where the nexus camera is supposed to shine, and I was shocked when I actually saw the picture on the computer. Just wish we had manual controls on this thing (shutter speed, iso, etc).

yeah your right, this is a phone forum not a camera forum...plus people who are really into photography dont do it on their phones...trust me I am married to a photographer...while she snaps pictures of the kids all day on her phone she would NEVER take it out to do a wedding or photo shoot.

Thats not what I mean.
I'm saying if people are happy with flip phone quality photos on a smartphone in 2012, then they don't really know photography at all.
Anyways, see my post above. I'm a little calmer now lol.

I'm no expert but it looks pretty good to me. Maybe the abundant lighter colored walls reflect too much light and require a faster shutter speed?
Interesting house. I assume the garage doors are hidden in the back.
Electronic rolling shutter vs mechanical shutter

Camera phones have shutters? This is news to me. They have electronic rolling shutters, but no mechanical shutter. It seems like the shutter speed you're relating to DSLRs is mechanical shutter speed. In this sense, 1/3000 doesn't really mean a whole lot.
In my opinion the camera takes great photos! I have taken a number of photos that are all brilliant quality. I have had the photos printed out on photo paper in a number of sizes and recently had a photo printed on a 16x16 canvas and it looks stunning! There has been no loss in quality with the photo on the canvas and I know that there will be no loss in quality if I have 46x46 canvases made!

Stock camera takes very noisy/grainy pictures?

I noticed that our stock camera app loves to raise ISO in situations where one may not want to, and because the app doesn't have a preview option we tend to end up with a lot of bad shots we can't use. I can always go in and manually set the ISO, but that's a whole lot of trouble especially when I'm looking to snap a quick picture.
I recently downloaded the newly updated CameraZOOM FX since I heard it's a lot better after it's most recent 4.0 update. After playing with the app I've found that in AUTO mode it does take better images than the stock GS3 camera app. When comparing the EXIF data I notice that pictures taken with the Samsung app generally have higher ISO, which is consistent with the grainier pictures. But I also noticed that the Samsung app pictures have a 1/30 second exposure time while the CameraZOOM FX pictures have a 1/15 second exposure time. So I don't know how that would play into picture quality.
I like the Samsung app because of its options and it's performance, but I don't like the quality issues that are mainly related to high ISO.
Is there a way to modify these values somehow?
I've attached a few comparison shots between the Samsung app and CameraZOOM FX v4.0.
Edit: because attachments weren't working.
I too notice grainy pics from the stock camera. I'm currently using jelly bean leak and it seems to function better than ics.

wow. I thought the lack of grain (compared to the S2) was phenominal in this camera. gonna have to check this out.
Camera FX is nice but I can not use it. ANYTHING less than 8mp is not acceptable to me. needless to say I was miffed when I discovered all the burst shots I took with it were 960x720 (ouch) not even 1mp. what is the point of that.
that program NEEDS to have prominant on the screen at all times what RESOLUTION its shooting at if its anything less than the rated res of the camera.
Ever think it's a screen protector? On my screen and computer they look flawless man.

Better camera app?

Has anyone found a camera app that better utilizes the 13mp camera? It can take some pretty sharp shots but I'd love to find something a little better built.

People say Camera zoom fx is nice. Personally I want the 4.2 camera app ( not the pre release app, the one with the update). If anyone has an apk for it, please post it.

I've used zoomfx the difference between it and the stock camera app are stark. Check the topic on pictures with the 13 MP camera I started a few days back. I posted comparison shots of results between the two apps. It's not even close zoomfx is much better in low light settings, haven't played much with zoomfx with daytime shots, but in good lighting so far about the same I think, but again haven't really played with it much yet.

Thanks guys, I just tried it out and noticed a huge difference in the low light pictures. So much more detail was captured by zoomfx.

Galaxy note 2 best configuration for camera ?

I want to know what configuration for the camera is the best for the night. Because when i take a picture at night the quality is poor. Post your pictures at night taken by your galaxy note 2 . And the configuration.

I typically just use auto with flash and photos turn out pretty decent.
Otherwise i have found that the low light mode does petty well too

Low light mode. Unsure what the outdoor visibility would do. Might be worth experimenting with auto contrast.

HDR is camera setting. It basically makes a better photo. Go to Camera then to Settings. Then somewhere there you can change the mode to HDR. Btw I use HDR and the rest auto settings for lowlight. It makes decent pictures. But the camera is way better in daylight. But that's every camera though, remind yourself it is still a phone!!
I absolutely disagree. HDR doesn't make a photo better. Why? I really have no time to write. Please Google.
Swyped from my GT-N7100
Hdr is high dynamic range. What it does is take 3 or more photo of the same thing, typically a normal photo, under exposed photo and over exposed photo. Then mixing this 3 photo together to create a beautiful photo.
Hdr doesn't really help in low light scenarios. Try using low light mode in low light situations. But take note that Low light means low shutter speed. Have your subject stand really still or it'll be a blur.

Camera Settings best quality?

what settings are you guys using that gives u the best quality ?

The higher the resolution is set to the less noise there will be.
The more light there is where you are taking pictures or videos the noise will be less.
The better the quality of the camera is it will also produce less noise.
Good Luck!

This isn't always true... I've found that 6MP widescreen takes the best photos... I've compared them side by side and 3.1 and 6MP generally take less noisy photos than the full 8MP resolution of the sensor - especially in low light conditions.
HDR will be your friend once you learn the conditions it works best in. Plenty of videos or there on educating how to use a camera, same rules apply: be it a digital camera or smartphone camera.
T-Mobile Galaxy S 3, stock and rooted.
you need to have very super steady hands to use the HDR option. Just mess with the cam color filters and increase the resolution to the max quality
I haven't got HDR ever working on my S3, I can't even manually adjust the exposure. Is it just a problem with AOSP roms?
i used HDR setting on TW roms and i see no difference on the pictures....
maybe im doing something wrong. lol

Take a picture of a tall building with the sun right behind it, you'll notice a difference alright... although you might not like the difference at all.
