[Q] Werid issue where my GS3 is stuck in Factory Mode - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Let me start by saying I've read through several other threads with a similar issue, but they all have a common connectivity problem that I'm NOT experiencing so I thought I'd ask this in a new thread. I was using AOKP build 5, and I decided to try out a more TW stock rom to see how devs have modified it. I chose Intergalactic v 2.8, wiped data/cache and installed like ya do. Almost immediately I got the pop up saying, "Unfortunately, Factory Test has stopped." I didn't think much of it, even though I had never seen it before. I restored my app data via Titanium Backup and starting fiddling with my settings. Made a couple calls, a few texts. Put my phone down to go about my morning. Later when I went to unlock my phone I realized I don't have a lockscreen. Thought that was funny so I went to boot into recovery but punching the power button just turned the phone off; So I investigated and I realize I'm in factory mode. and I can't seem to get out of it. I've tried running the terminal commands to turn it off, but that didn't work. It looks like my ESF folder is empty or doesn't exist.
So here's what I know after all of my research: My IMEI somehow seems to be intact since I can make calls and get on the network, but because my ESF is empty or gone can't turn off factory mode, which is causing all kinds of other buggy issues such as no lockscreen, no power menu, and the annoying Factory Test pop-up. If there is a thread out there that had a similar problem, I apologize that I couldn't find it. is there any way to recover this info, since the IMEI is still intact? Thanks.

Tried to restore the stock JB with Odin and it didn't fix the problem. I'm attempting to flash the stock ICS, then attempt an OTA update to see if that does the trick. Will keep you posted.

So I flashed ics and then allowed AT&T to push my JB update to me OTA. Still in factory mode. I guess I'll just have to investigate this more thoroughly. I'm using widget locker as a work around for my lockscreen, but still no power menu and the popups are still showing up every now and then. Super annoying, but at least my phone is still functioning. If anyone has any other ideas I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Try taking and EFS folder from a stock ROM and push it to your current ROM and see if that helps

How would I extract it from the EFS folder from the stock image? I figured I would need to do with through ADB, but I have no idea what commands I would have to execute.

I saw this fix, but frankly, I'm skittish to try it as my IMEI is still intact and I'm afraid of making the problem worse. My EFS folder is there, but it's empty.

Don't be skittish. It really and truly is the only way to get everything back to how it should be. Ton's of people have tried it and this allows you to push the IMEI back into your phone the way it came from the factory. It's not for spoffing or doing anything illegal.
Now its usually for replacng a lost IMEI from flashing a ROM. Sometimes happens when going from a non-stock type ROM (i.e. CM or AOKP) to stock type ROM (i.e TW)
Search on how to push files with ADB and you should be good to go
BE CAREFUL though and don't skip steps or go fast.
I meant to ask...can you use your phone ? does data work ? Have you tried to get into download mode ?
If you can then download good manager and select reboot into recovery or any other number of apps that let you boot into recovery without having a power menu

Yeah, the phone works perfectly other than a lack of lock screen, no power menu, and the pop ups that annoyingly show every once in a while. Download mode works, and I pushed stock back to my device using ODIN. It now occurs me me to wonder if I might have had a different result if I had flashed my stock rom using ADB.

Yessir. When the phone booted back up it didn't go through the setup process. Just goes straight to the homescreen. Also when I boot into restore mode I see this under the menu options:
E:failed to mount /efs (Invalid Argument)
E:failed to mount /efs (Invalid Argument)
# MANUAL MODE #

Successfully applied multi-CSC.

I tried turning it off with terminal emulator at one point last night, but it didn't seem to work, I THINK because the EFS folder is empty. I'll have to re-root tonight and try it again since I've restored my stock firmware.
It may seem like I'm shooting down every suggestion you guys throw at me, but I really appreciate the input. XDA is a big place and I tried to be very thorough when searcing for a solution before posting this thread, but I'm sure there's something out there I've missed. Thank you for your efforts.

I think I found something that will allow me to restore a generic EFS here:

Asked the originator if it will work to restore my files. If so, gonna try it when I get off work tonight.

Ah exactly what I have been looking for on this one for you. I found a few that explained how to push your old EFS folder with ADB but none about making another. How crazy it was yesterday it popped up on a post. That looks like your best shot as you folder seems to be corrupted and although IMEI is intact you need a new one folder that is intact. Let us know how it turns out

Can you hit me with the stuff you found about pushing it through ADB? My efforts have been less than fruitful on that front. I'd rather be armed with as much information as possible.

Request for Virgin Mobile Stock

Hello all,
So I bought my HTC Wildfire S Virgin Mobile on black friday like everybody else. I waited a few days and then rooted. And then I had the brilliant idea to try installing the CM 7.1 Mod for it. And well, I didn't do a Clockwork Backup, and well, it didnt work very well. The phone got stuck on the HTC screen. So finally I installed a different ROM, JikantaruROM, and I managed to get past the bootscreen but I can't use my carrier anymore. So I was wondering if anybody could either tell me how to flash CM 7.1 Unoffical release to my phone, or if anybody knew a way I could get back to the original Virgin Mobile software. It seems that you have all the other stock roms, so I would REALLY appreciate if someone could share the Virgin Mobile rom too.
Thanks in advance,
Wieland959
Seconded. Although I think mine is in a slightly worse case; I kept flashing roms and ended up in a state where it turns on, screen remains black, then the phone vibrates three times and evidently does nothing. So Wieland959, I'd advise you to stop flashing until someone posts the ROM.
And if someone could let me know how to recover from my current state, I'd very much appreciate it.

Your in the same boat I was just in. My solution was to go back to radioshack with the receipt and tell them it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Just doing the 3 vibrations. I did spend hours trying to search about how to fix it, but I dont think theres a way unless you use a jtag hookup and some sort of fancy programmer.
@Wieland959, If you want. I just tried to do the OTA update through the settings on the phone itself. It would let me download the file(I believe it should be flashable through the cwm recovery), but when I tried to let the phone install the file, I would get the android with the exclamation mark after the reboot. Ill try to post here, if it will upload. But......
DISCLAIMER!!!!
I take no responsibility for anyone damaging their phone using the file here. This file, as far as I know, should only work with the Wildfire S Virgin Mobile USA CDMA model A510C as this is the phone the file was downloaded from.
Thank you for the file, but I couldn't flash it. What might work though, if you are willing is, if you have rooted your phone, to make a cwm backup and upload that here. From there I should be able to recover and then factory wipe my phone. But thank you anyways for the file. I will keep kicking until the phone doesn't boot.
How are you planning on restoring from backup if the phone doesn't even boot?
Sorry, I'm new to this...

Okay. I managed to boot my phone and am able to send/receive texts. The rom I used? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367701] It seems to work pretty well. However, I would still like to have the original rom if someone could still upload it.
VM USA Stock Clockwork Backup
Well, I don't know much about stuff like this, but here is my clockwork mod recovery backup. It's just the stock VM USA w/HTC Sense. I have realized that I deleted the bloatware, so that's the only thing that isn't 100% stock. Hope it helps.
*Unzip the file before placing on you sd card. (Contains the clockwork folder, which contains the backup folder, and then the folder that contains the backup itself.)*

Thanks for the backup! It worked perfect for me!
would you mind if i posted the link on another forum? i know of a couple people looking for a backup aswell.
You should be able to switch back with the recovery no problem. Correct me if I'm wrong, but to install boot into recovery, install from SD, select specific, and select the zip of the rom. Also, I don't have my phone on me so the wording might be a little different.
MMS is a known issue with the rom from what I've read. I don't have it installed personally.
@brandonhun, Thank you so much. You're a life saver. As far as the rom goes, it still have sense on it and there are tons of MMS errors. So just wait and eventually something will pop up.

I haven't done this ROM change but if its the stock HTC Sense go to personalize and get HTC widgets (perhaps its get more HTC widgets) and you should find an update to the clock widget. That should give you the original clock plus a bunch more new ones.

I checked the forums and couldnt find my answer.
I am rooted and have twrp, and the android market installed. I would like to go back to bone stock.
I can just reset the KF under device right? How do I uninstall twrp?
Thanks
No thats incorrect you dont just reset the device you must wipe well and flash stock I must tell you numerous people are bricking themselves fairly bad attempting to do the same personally I would avoid it just flash modaco instead other than that the method to return to stock is in the second post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1638452

The only mention of ADB is "adb push C:\kfu\software\update-kindle-6.3.1_D01E_4107720.bin /sdcard/update.zip", which you can easily avoid if you don't want to touch ADB.
Just rename your downloaded file to update.zip (watch out for the file extension, Windows hides most of them on default settings), then just copy it into your KF like you do any other file. Do not place it in any subfolder.
Be sure to follow the steps carefully, or else you may end up with a soft brick (fixable).

No, that's not all you should do to get back to stock... follow ALL the STEPS. Wiping is VERY important. Ie, don't just rename the file to update.zip and flash it right away, or you'll most likely end up with a soft brick. I was only clarifying that one specific step.

Just a side note after restoring to stock you need to then perform a factory restore as well which will wipe your sd card if all goes well it should smooth out from there

[Q] Boot hang after flashing using Odin back to stock rooted

Hello all,
I am facing problems with my SIII right now. I was running AOKP but due to the bluetooth not being able to sync with my stereo, I decided to go back to stock rooted. I just flashed back the stock rooted image using Odin, but now my phone sits at the Samsung screen with the blue notification light on. I have tried rebooting, and it gets to this point (after the rethink possible screen) and just sits. I am thinking another flash in Odin is in order? Is there a stock, non root image I can flash via odin? I am just really lost for ideas right now and any input would be appreciated! Thanks!
Update:
I tried flashing with odin again and this time I got a failed. It was in the process of flashing the "system". I am kinda starting to freak out. I am hoping that it's just the file I'm using (though it just worked not even a few days ago.) I am trying again and if this one bombs out, I think I am going to try a different file. The one I am downloading to try next is the "stock unroot" from the how-to video. Anyone have any luck with this?
Another Update:
I just re-flashed with odin, this time it says it successfully completed but once again it's stuck at the flashing Samsung logo with the indicator led on.... I am starting to really freak out lol. I have another file downloading that is supposedly just stock, no root or anything...

Actually have the exact same situation going on right now, I will post if I can find a fix. Downloading an alternate stock build I found now and will let you know how it goes.

I've always noticed the LED being on during boot (or some of the boot) and it was also on when I had a bootloop during cm9 so I don't think it means anything.
Fair enough, I guess I never paid that much attention till now when things don't work heh. I do recall reading about someone else having the similar issue using odin...I am trying to find the post and if there was any follow up on it.

Correction : Used that link you had posted, it was still stuck so I loaded up the toolkit and used option 20 for reboot options to force it into default recovery, wiped data & cache from there and let it reboot, it seemed to have hung but waited a few minutes and it came back to life. Back to complete stock here now, hope it works for you.

When you say toolkit are you talking about the one from the thread labled [SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 QCOM TOOLKIT V2.3] Drivers Backup Root CWM BusyBox + MORE [ATT]? And if so you just opened it and used option 20? nothing else? This sounds great if it works hehe.

Should have explained a bit better. Yes that toolkit
While it was stuck at samsung screen.
1 For AT&T (Obviously)
20 For reboot options
1 For recovery.
Then wipe data/cache
Then wiped cache (no idea why)
then rebooted.
When i did an Odin to stock I also froze on the Samsung logo. I had to boot to recovery and do a factory reset I side recovery to get it to boot. Keep in mind everything will be deleted though

That is exelent. I am downloading the toolkit right now and will report back shortly.
Once you got it to boot, did you still have root? I am wondering if you flashing the "stock rom" that I posted, if that had any impact. I have only pushed the root66 file, so I am expecting root when(if XD) I get this thing going again. I appreciate you being more thorough with your instructions, and will report back with my results as soon as I get some
Also, are we loners on this? I am not seeing any other posts about going back to stock/stock rooted from modded roms using odin? I am trying to figure out the best method to go back to stock. I made a nandroid and I am sure that would work, but all of this word about having to flash different kernels and bluetooth/wifi drivers to get stock working properly makes me wonder if just using odin is the easiest method, as it restores everything on the phone (to my knowledge).

That is great, this may sound a little silly, but how do I boot to recovery? Thanks!
UPDATE:Nvm, google hehe. I just did the factory reset...Things are looking good so far, the haptic lights turned on at least...BOOM! We are good gentlemen. It looks like all it took was the recovery wipe. This is great news! I will try to figure out how to mark this as solved, and you crash822, you get a thanks
NP sir. We all have to start somewhere. Luckily for me I was already planning on doing a full wipe so I backed up everything I wanted to keep from my phone onto my computer before using odin.
I seem to be having the same issue. I've downloaded the toolkit as you guys have suggested. are you guys in download mode on the phone while you use this? it seems to want me to be in debugging mode and i can't get to that. I've tried a factory reset with no luck.

Boot Looped - reboot nvbackup

So, I was working with a friends SIII and I read about running reboot nvbackup. Like a dumba$$ I decided to run it on my N900T in terminal and now I'm boot looping. I've Odin'd back to the stock ROM with no resolve. What did I do and how can I fix it?
TIA

Before you Odin'ed back to stock did you do a full wipe using TWRP/CWM which includes:
"Wipe Data", "Wipe System", "Wipe Cache", "Wipe Dalvik Cache" and last but not least did
you do a full "Factory Reset" in TWRP/CWM ?
After doing all the above your phone should no longer boot loop, what it should do after doing
the all the above is to go into download mode and or recovery mode.
If it boots into download mode then odin flash the official stock rom which must match the specific
model number of your phone. After doing that you should be good to go.
Best place to find and download the official stock rom is at " SamMobile.com ".
The only roms that SamMobile.com has are the official stock odin flash firmwares which
displays exact baseband (model numbers) which needs to match your phone's baseband.
Good luck!
Thanks for the reply. I've done what you have mentioned, but still boot looping. Trying other methods that I've found and will report back unless someone has any other suggestions. Primarily, I'd like to know what the reboot nvbackup actually did.

I skimmed through the thread on nvbackup and it seems like you borked your efs/IMEI. Could be wrong, I only scanned the thread... This was made for the S3, why would you do this to your Note 3?? Anyways try this thread here: let me grab it real quick..

Did an "adb shell" when phone is in recovery mode to run commands via TWRP
From the ADB shell: Wiped the EFS partition with the following command:
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p12*
mkdir /efs
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /efs
(the last two commands probably did nothing, but thats what I did anyway)
Did a Factory Reset*
Then... reboot to system
Afterwards, no more boot looping, the phone successfully registered on the mobile network, and my IMEI is there and correct. Seems like the EFS partition can rebuild itself now I guess...

I did it because I'm a dumba$$...no, really...it seemed innocent enough to me...no files to load, etc. Lesson learned.
Anywho, yes, I've also tried that one too to no avail. Just since it is already borked, I ran the reboot nvrestore and that locked it right up to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 screen. I then Odin'd back the original factory rom and tried the above steps again. Back to boot looping. I would imagine there is an answer since I'm able to get into recovery, but I just need that silver bullet.
Thanks for trying though.

Hey zonly1, were you able to fix your note 3? I'm did what you did.
No, I'm still dead in the water.

Hey guys, I did the same thing on my note 3 and I tried everything to fix it but in the end I was still within my 14 days and I took it to the store I bought it and swapped it out. At this point you have a couple of options, call Tmobile and do a warranty swap or go through samsung directly. If you go through samsung expect to not have your note for about 1-2 weeks.

Broken note3's aren't funny. Mine was broken for over 6 weeks, I didn't give up, and today I figured out how to fix the FSG partition that Samsung left vulnerable by the toxic "reboot nvbackup" command. Hope one or two of the guys read my fix and get their note3' gowning again
It wasn't meant to be funny as in ha ha, but rather a doubtful funny that anyone in the thread still has this as a problem. They would most likely of had the issue fixed or replaced their phone by now. Going on now more than 60 days is a but long for most here for a working phone.
I do commend you on coming up with a solution, most don't have that kind of patience.
this is no joke as you all have stated, it's an easily caused brick, but it would have equally been as easy to look up if this unfamiliar command (at least to me) would cause a brick/loop. I'm familiar with adb but had no idea that's a problem samsung left. please let me know of a fix or provide me with a device dump for those partitions, I think it's mmcblk0p's 12,13..17,18, thanks in advance

need help " Factory Mode is on"

any one help plx, i try to flash many ROM and try to back to stock Rom, and still have this message come out every time restart the phone, i want my phone back to normal mode, plx help

Might help?
try this
1. You have to install a terminal emulator from google market
2. Type su
3. Then enter the following after the #
echo -n ON > /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
(yes ON is the correct setting to turn it off)
anything i doing wrong?
Might be why you are having the problem. Is the EFS and EFS/FactoryApp directories there?

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm in the same boat as you. My efs folder was somehow deleted by TWRP and after I recovered from the brickloop this caused I found that "Factory mode" is also activated on my device. I was able to solve this by pasting the contents of someone else's Verizon Note 3 efs folder into mine, but the files disappear every time I reboot. No one has responded to my inquiries about this as of yet, but after some searching it seems that there might be a efs.img file that the efs folder is built off of upon boot of the phone. At least that was my understanding...
