Portable Gaming Mod for the Xperia S/Acro S/Ion! With USB flash drive support! - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

So I've been trying to figure out how to get my Acro S hooked up to a PS3 controller by a wire instead of using the Sixaxis Controller App. Wanted to try to avoid bluetooth because of battery life. But if you try to OTG cable the PS3 controller, the Xperia S/Acro S/Ion will spit out the error of "USB power consumption error". Basically our Micro USB port doesn't output enough power for the PS3 controller (yet a Galaxy S II does it just fine )
So then I discovered this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822653
Charging an Xperia and using OTG at the same time. Got me thinking. I can charge the phone while gaming and provide enough power to use the PS3 controller. All I really need is one of those USB battery packs and I can make this portable! No need for a dock. This is perfect. Gaming on the phone just burns away battery life. This would kill two birds with one stone.
So I ordered a few things online and I made the proper cable needed with the info from the thread above. Got a bunch of stuff of ebay, cut it up, solder it together and threw in some heat shrink.

Plugged the phone, USB battery pack and PS3 controller together... WTF?! Same error. Why won't it draw power from the USB battery pack. Eventually I figured it out. Went back online and ordered some more stuff. What I need to do is to take my custom cable and plug the Mini USB side into a USB Hub instead. That way the USB Hub will draw power from the USB battery pack and still charge the phone. And now that the USB Hub has plenty of power, it can now power the PS3 just fine.
So with a few extra parts I am able to make a mobile gaming dock for my Xperia Acro S. Without realizing it, by adding a USB Hub to this combo I can now how extra storage space by plugging in a USB flash drive. I could even watch more movies and watch them long due to the extended battery life.
Parts list:
- PS3 Controller
- GameKlip, for mounting the phone on the PS3 controller
http://buy.thegameklip.com/
- A basic case for your phone. Needed for mounting on the GameKlip. Just a simple backing case from ebay will do.
- Any USB battery pack, the one I am using is Maxpower E500i
http://www.maxpower.us.com/collecti...axpower-e500i-premium-v3-1-power-bank-5000mah
- A small USB hub, grab mine off ebay. Made sure mine had a Mini USB input.
http://www.amazon.com/Self-Power-Port-Black-Laptop/dp/B006Z9ULUY
- Easy to assemble usb connectors. Just ebay "diy USB" and you will know what I mean.
- USB to Mini USB & Micro USB cable. Ebay this as well. Only issue is the Mini USB only has the power wires. Lucky I ordered a bunch of them and cut up the cables I needed... or you could probably just buy the right kind of cables
- 100K Ohm resister. I just went to a local electronics shop.
- Some heavy duty double sided mounting tape
If your wondering, the weight comes in at 527g with my Acro S... a bit heavy but hey still works!
Thanks for reading!

Dude,
This looks epic, will get the kit and then have ago at it myself.
Awesome work

My previous phone was the Xperia Play and I really miss the physical buttons on the phone, so when I saw the gameklip and when they finally provided a more universal solution it was a no brainier to buy it. I don't game too much but when I do, I have to do it right! Don't think I would bother trying to sell it. It's really annoying working with such tiny wires when trying to solder everything together. Too much work for something so simple.
I will probably change it a bit later. Maybe buy an extra battery pack (since I only have one and use it for many things) and have it dedicated. Also I was double sided mounting tape was just to quickly slap it together to see what it looks like. I think I will switch it to industrial velcro. That stuff has super sticky tape side. And it would be easier to separate the battery pack when charging or to remove half of the weight from the PS3 controller (and put it down on a table or in your pocket/bag).
johnnybalboa if you ever get it working with your AR drone, post it and show us your results!

WoW! IF I just have a PS3 Controller I'll do it too.

This is pretty crazy, but if you wanted to play snes roms so badly, getting a PSP and modding it or an Xperia Play would have been much easier

I don't think the Acro S is such a great device for gaming. It heats up quite fast.

Will a USB game pad work with Galaxy S II ?

Since the galaxy S II can have a USB port using this adapter .

My question is : Will a USB game pad work with Galaxy S II ? ?
Like Xbox 360 , PS3 or PC game pads .
Great news if it does! Is that adapter only compatible on the Galaxy S II?
If Samsung haven't done some tweaks on the adapter itself .I think it'll work on any device that support "USB OTG" e.g. Motorola Atrix .
I'm pretty sure the adapter is just a micro USB -> USB adapter, and does nothing more. Now I really doubt you'll be able to use gamepads out of the box or even keyboard/mouse because it might not function as a USB host (only USB OTG as Dark Sector said), and it certainly won't have the drivers needed to use a USB keayboard, mouse, gamepad etc.
But if the SGS2 has an unlocked bootloader and devs are able to change the kernel, then it should be possible to use about any USB device, like on the Nexus One (not saying it will happen though ^^)
So a USB female-female cable might do he trick
One thing i want to note is that the Galaxy S II support the USB host
The only thing that keeps me wondering is if the USB game pads will work with the wii mote software with or without tweaks .
Fingers crossed someone finds a way of pairing a ps3 pad!

I think this remains to be seen, the Nokia N8 with USB OTG will work with USB keyboard/mouse so there is hope yet that the SGSII will also support these. I will be testing it with my USB OTG adapter when my phone finally arrives. I do agree that gamepads are unlikely to work.
I wonder how hard it would be to create bluetooth drivers to allow use of the ps3 game pad
Quite difficult it would seem, since nobody managed it for the original Galaxy S, which I would think will have essentially the same BT stack as the SGSII.
The original SGS didn't have usb-hosting though. That could make all the difference and it's the best chance we have of getting the ps3 controller to work.
I just wish I had the knowledge and talent to have a go at it myself. I'm sure those who know what they're doing will be very interested in the challenge

This is the main problem and what got me thinking about the USB game pads as an alternative .
Because i really want to play with emulators when i get my GSII but it's hard to play without a game pad .

Wiimote will work because there is a dev behind it, usb gamepads like xbox 360 and playstation3 should work theoretically with the right drivers. Just need someone to develop it.. But the phone should handle it
well the sgs has been out for a while now and you still can't use a wiimote on it yet not with the original fw, and as i recall it there was development on getting a ps3 remote working with android but haven't heard about it for a long time. but i still hope for it.
yes this really is the device to get a gamepad working on it. If we could get ps3 controllers working then add a micro usb - hdmi cable + tv (ideally a new one which charges your phone at the same time) and you have a portable ps1,snes etc. Now once they get 1 controller working hopefully it wont be too hard to add another. be pretty awesome to be able to play some tekken off your phone on a big screen + charge your phone at the same time

That one works on Android too. So does a lot of others, including Wii controllers, Xbox controllers, PS3 controllers, etc.
I use an Xbox360 controller on my Galaxy Tab, and a Phonejoy controller (which is made for Android) on my S II. Use it with a DIY S II holder I made for it:
that is an 'icontrolpad' and can be used for our sgs2

yes i know this, i owned this one some months ago, and let me say: DON'T BUY IT
it's only cheap plastik. yes, there is an adapter for quite all phone models, but it's very unconfortable, buy a psp if you want to play seriously on the road.
if you are only a casual gamer, virtual touch controls are enough, and on the beautifull touch screen of gs2 it's better than crappy physical controls.
listen to me: for casual gaming use touch controls on your phone, for REAL GAMING there are pc-ps3-xbox-wii, in the middle psp-nds (for kids)
Anyone tested OnLive controler ???
It looks like great to use because the phone is attached to the joypad but i think it is quitte uggly.

I use the PC wireless adapter plugged into my Gaalxy Tab 7.0 Plus via USB. USB/BT Joystick Center for the setup, and through root and the joystick2touch setup it gives compatibility with pretty much any game that has touch buttons.
How do you do it mate ? Can you please explain this step by step ?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
This is sort of the thing that you shouldn't be doing if you can't read your way to how to do it on yourself, simply because there are so many different ways it can not work, but ok. You install USB/BT Joystick Center, and if you have root, the joy2touch addon. You make sure you've enabled USB/BT's USBjoyIME fake keyboard in input settings of your device, start the app, and plug in your x360 wireless adapter via USB. You give it permission to use the USB input, swithc to the USBjoyIME "keyboard", turn on the xbox controller, pair it the way you pair those controllers, select the controller in the app. Test that buttons show up, and that's it for non-root setup. You then program buttons normally in whatever app you use. If you have root, you can start the touch addon from within the main app, and when in-game, hold 4 fingers on the screen to enter touch edit mode. You then press a button and click on the screen where you want it to go. That programs it to send the device fake touchscreen input data when you press the button
Note that I do this on a Galaxy tab, not the S II. I just mentioned it in passing and actually use a phonejoy on my s ii
Thanks mate ..i am gonna try this once i am free.

Have you guys tried the sixaxis app with a ps3 controller? It lets you setup 'touch profiles' where you can map the buttons to anywhere on your screen. You can virtually play any game with it, but works the best with emulators.

That question suggests you're not really aware of how game controllers function on Android...which is perfectly understandable. I'm working on a guide to game controllers on Android that will be done tomorrow or so, it should help clear up a few things
I have the iControlPad (OP's post) and I can say that it works beautifully with my S2.
I had to drill a hole in the retainer clip in order to make it hold my phone+case (It will hold a caseless i9100 without issue otherwise), but other than that it is a wonderful piece of hardware. Makes playing the Kairosoft games a breeze!

Amazed by HDMI cable!

Today I get an micro HDMI to HDMI cable from eBay, and tested it just few minutes ago, and I can only say, WOW. Great experience and quality of transfer, from watching simple pictures, to watching HD videos.
My long time problem with not being able to watch my favourite shows/movies on LCD is now gone because I don't need to burn all shows and movies to DVD's and then watch them in my crappy Samsung DVD player, which interrupts playing every 15-20 mins because of aged laser lens (not to mention limitation to standard definition .avi files only).
One more nice thing is, you can browse your phone on your HD LCD, and play some of your favourite games too, and they look really amazing.
The best thing I ever get for some of my phones from eBay. Ofcourse I could buy this regularry in some of the tech shops in my town, but this way it costed me about 30% less, with longer cable, and golden connectors.
Now excuse me, I'm going to watch Star Trek (2009) in HD...
Must say, I never thought that it would be that good quality. First time I plugged it in, though it was a bit of a gimmick. Wasn't very smooth and the quality was bad. However.....
As soon as I fired up a tv show, it suddenly changed to being crystal clear. Life On Mars played as good as it does on my PS3, also sounds great too. It's perfect to plug into a HDTV when your on holiday. No more need to lug around a laptop or many DVD's
I play with my phone using a 360 wireless controller, charging at the same time (livedock) and plugged to a bravia tv... Amazing...
To be honest I prefer playing that way with my phone than with the xbox360, the games are funnier and free...
I cant do that with my galaxy s2, thats why I love my arc s
Hahha, Overdose I thought I am the only Crazy guy playing like this! But you proofed me wrong! The only thing I own is an Xperia Arc and a no name TV which supports HDMI( 72op HD Ready) .. So , I got a controller from my friend -and started to get creative and end up using my phone as a console !

And how do you play games that require screen interaction (Angry Birds and so on...)?

Trying to get my hands on the white Nyko, but so far release date was moved to 11/15/2012. Can't say that in all my time searching I found much of a smaller one. There is one on Kickstarter that is pretty small and fits as a keychain, but the problem is that the games have to SUPPORT the controller. So far, Nyko is the only controller I've seen that wont require this since it will have the options to customize touchpad, button control, etc. to the controller itself. IMO wait for the Nyko controller. The black Nyko is out right now.

not small and may not be cheap depending on what you may already have.

you can also use a USB PS3 controller or Xbox USB controller (native support IIRC) get a used one and chop the cable to short it with a $2 ebay OTG cable.

Robust enough so it does not break. feels also heavy enough in your hands to give good user experience.
not need to install the driver - Plug and play worked on Win 7.
identical to brand-named joypads.
Thanks! Do you know if the regular playpad works the same way?

Just saw this on ebay.
Looks an awful lot like the Gametel with 2 analogs and a better dpad.
I quite like my phonejoy, though for some reason, the price has gone up (by $15) since I bought mine.
That's because shipping cost is now included I think.
I still wonder what I'm going to buy. I already got the Gametel but it feels cheap and really lack precision.
I play a lot of emulators and need something great for fighting games.
I don't feel really confident about Sony gamepad.
Their Dpad wasn't good back in the days, hard to make 2x quarter circle and stuff like that, but I never tried a PS3 controller though (are they really different from PS1 / PS2?).
I like the Logitech Dpad you can find on old RumblepadII and the F310-710 series.
But compatibility seems to be not that great from what I could find (few infos) and using the usb port (need to charge? stop playing ).
Phonejoy Dpad is great? you play fighting games?
this is pretty sweet i think im gonna buy one
Since I don't play often, and when I do it's just emulator stuff, I just use my Wiimote.

can anyone recommend a gamepad thats not too expensive?

Hi, i only play games now and then on my tablet so i don't need a brilliant expensive one, i just want one that will do the job and make game playing on certain games (gta, sonic etc) better, i find using the screen all the time a bit rubbish and makes me not want to bother with the games i have.
can anyone recommend one?

Someone link me to an OTG cable?

Assuming you have an android phone as well you could try this app it works for me I use it with nesoid and n64oid and believe it should work with gta and sonic it turns your phone into a bluetooth controller for use with a tablet or another phone as the host. Heres the link to the free version which I am using I am thinking of getting the full version so I can have other controller layouts. Full version is a $1.10 aus.

How do u like this controller? Does the left and right analog thumb sticks have 360ºaxxis or do they only have 8 points of direction?

Just picked this up from GS today. Works like a charm. Have it paired to My Note 10.1, Note 2, & Nexus 7. Works perfectly with all three.
Tested working on ShadowGun/DeadZone, Dead Trigger, Shine Runner Beach Buggy, RipTide, and sort of on Samurai Vengeance(roll/evade doesn't map)
Does not work on Bat Man TDK, or NFSMW

I want to get a gamepad to use on my note. Does the ps3 controller work like it should ie all directional controls, jump, fire etc?.
I use the ps3 controller works great.. Just have to make a custom profile and it will work with every game

Thanks for that. I will pop down to the shop tomorrow and get one. Do you use sixaxis to use the Ps3 controller?

This. You need the OTG adapter + MiniUSB cable to pair it though (but once paired you dont need the adapter, it'll remember the pairing) I dont do a lot of gaming but when using it, it's been quick and responsive. (it does require root - and remember to change the input method after its paired and change back when your done or the onscreen KB wont show up)

You don't have to change the input method. You just have to select "Enable Gamepad" under Preferences -> Gamepad Settings. The gamepad buttons will work as long as the checkbox for "Sixaxis Controller" under "Language and input" in "System Settings" is checked. Pressing the start button will act as the home button even if you have the Samsung Keyboard set as the main IME.

I didn't realise that, I've been selecting it each time I use my controller. I only use it to play modern combat upto now. Tried playing gta vice City but the button configuration isn't that good.
