USB OTG + Charge? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Accessories

I just recently got a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and so far I'm quite happy with it --- except one thing, I cant find a cable that lets me charge the tablet *and* use the USB Host (OTG) port... (i.e. read files off a USB drive or play a game with a USB game pad while keeping the tablet plugged in)
Is there a way to do this? it would seem to me that all it needs is a splice to give power to the Power +/- pins on the connector while keeping the OTG Data +/- pins active...? (I know nothing about the pinout so I could be wrong on this)
Just to be clear I want to use the OTG adapter WHILE CHARGING (I've found one device that gives both these options but says "only one function may be used at a time")
Ideas?

Discussed dozen times in 10.1 forum. Actually it is not possible. Build an otg + power cable myself but it only works with timing and with a specific procedure... quite annoying. Wait for a custom rom somewhere in the future as I do.

You may have issues trying this, OTG cables are iffy under Jelly Bean. Some may work, some may not. In fact, Google removed references to OTG support for Nexus devices last November since OTG is so spotty. Splicing a cable that might work may kill it. Decent battery-powered USB and SD hubs are available and bypass the OTG problems. I have the RavPower RP WD01 and love it. The USB port will support drives upto 3T. It also has an SD card slot.

Powering the USB devices isn't a problem, I have a nice hub that powers them without issue, even extremely power-hungry devices. I was wanting to charge the tablet's battery while using the OTG adapter (original thought was for USB-gamepad-ing since high-requirement games drain battery, but I've since started using a PS3 controller over bluetooth so I can use the OEM charge cable and wireless for gaming --- but USB drives I'd have to copy the files over to internal flash or a MicroSD card to view while charging and i've found that the cards dont like files that are 8gb in size... (FAT-32 restriction iirc))

I saw that when I google'd but thought maybe there had been some new developments (especially with how this site's members love to tinker with electronics and write custom firmware). It's not a huge issue, since the Note 10.1 has amazing battery life (it's actually matching or doing BETTER than my iPad in most circumstances) I just like to never run the battery down low.. (why cant tablets have user-replaceable/swapable batters like most phones?!)
Thanks for the info!

MHL & USB host

Anyone know if it's possible to use MHL in conjunction with a microUSB to USB host adaptor to output to HDMI and access an external USB drive at the same time? That'd make the SGS2 an amazing portable media unit.
No, it is not posible. Its an either/or connection to the micro USB port.
Shame, because as you say that would really be a great thing. MHL consortium are considering a number of improvements to the 2.0 MHL spec, so in future devices this may be a possibility.
So MHL can't be used when I'll plug a USB-Hub?
No, sadly not.
It's a shame - for now I'd prefer micro USB & separate HDMI port so USB can be utilised as well as an external display.
As would I, and a lot of others I suspect.
But you've got 16 GB memory and can copy your stuff to the memory and watch it later via MHL on your Flat? So this is not a big problem, I think

Yes, but 16Gb of FAT32 and you can't copy a file > 4Gb
I would use allshare to stream the movie or whatever to your phone from a laptop and connect the phone to TV via the MHL HDMI adapter...that way you have access to ur laptop's data without being hardwired to it

Not that I'm aware of...
I bought one from Ebay and can't really do anything good with it. Display shows briefly for 3-4 seconds on TV then disappears again. Don't know why.....I hope it's not the device itself because I tested 2 phones, they were bought at the same time, but none of them would work correctly....
If by generic you mean a not samsung one or one not dedicated to the SGS2 then i actually use a one, from ebay or someting like that, everything works perfect you just cant forget to plug power to it, and about the not working one, it seems mine gets jammed by gsm signal (i.e. when receiving a call), so from time to time the image disappears in a blink of noise, maybe that is your problem too, try it in airplane mode.
Oh, I think I misread that question - I have actually used a generic one with my SGSII (a prototype from the MHL consortium) and it worked fine!

Uhm no. I've been streaming with WIFI through MHL no problem for MONTHS. Using the Original Samsung MHL connector of course.
I have to put mine in offline mode to be able to use the MHL adapter.....
As for USB-OTG no luck yet.....
On Amazon, Ebay, DealExtrem ... you will find adapters that can do 3 things at a time:
- output HDMI
- let phone work as usb host, so that you can plug kbd, mouse, and external HDD (second wifi card, wired ethernet ...); once you have the usb A plug, just pub a hub
- recharge the phone (what is not possible with the legacy short OTG cable).
+ read memory cards
Such devices are sold as MHL devices. Some MHL devices don't to all that.
Take care. MHLv2 is more complex than MHLv1.

Could you post a link as an example for such a device, that works properly (if you've tested, or you know it works) ?
Thank you
I can post links, but ... I have not tested any of those. And don't know any one personally who tested it.

Monobloc:
http://www.ebay.fr/itm/Micro-USB-Ho..._MobilePhoneDataCables_JN&hash=item258600844e
I don't like the monobloc version; I fear it's too heavy, and may help breaking the phone plug.
There are all sorts of OTG and MHL cables. I have seen OTG dongles as short as 4cm (monobloc), with small cable (8cm: 4-8€), with long cable (1.5m .... should be 7 feet), pure HDMI (passive cable, no card reader, 8-12€), VGA (including very cheap HDMI to VGA converter, 20-30€ ... including sound output). In some case, you need to buy accessories (extra power supply, extra uUSB cable, extra HDMI cable). Also seen a very cute hybrid card reader: http://dx.com/p/285865 (I love this product design, and I love this URL syntax )
Don't forget that there can be mistakes in item description.
Here I have described how to build an external battery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54036759&postcount=17
On previous phone, I just soldered additional battery to internal one; on my new phone, I will do something more complex, and more flexible.
Loosing power via OTG/MHL is not a fatality. Most phone have an other hidden power input:
généric, that uses the USB plug:
http://www.dx.com/p/reverse-qi-wire...arger-receiver-for-micro-usb-cellphone-312805
TRIPLE CHECK POLARITY; I took the wrong one; have to fold the cable.
So ... even if your OTG/MHL module takes power from your USB, and can not recharge your phone, the specific shell can charge your phone the other way So, you need to build an internal specific module:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK7PRJ4SiK0
S2 specific back shell, so called receiver:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2013-newest-wireless-charger-for-samsung-galaxy-s2/1266101036.html
http://www.exportprive.com/en/batte...reless-charger-set-for-samsung-galaxy-s2.html
http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/QI-Wireless-Charger-for-Samsung-Galaxy_821969998.html?s=p
The SGS2 is not designed to accept wireless chargers, so, you have two options:
- solder and take the pins out (cf youtube) (do not solder coild to battery, or you could overcharge the batt, and burn your phone ... I mean, physically set fire)
- find an item that includes back shell + specific battery (exportprive)
Many recent phones have the internal connectors, so you just need to change the back-cover. In this case, the software will be able to know the charger is wireless (as opposed to AC, and USB; advanced battery tools will show those 3 possibilities). I believe the motherboard for my HTC One M8 is designed to have those pins, but I can't find the specific cover yet (maybe in a few months); only found it for M7.

[Q] USB OTG *AND* charging at the same time.

Hello,
Can you have USB OTG and phone charging at the same time? Or even better: HDMI + USB OTG + charging? Without power the phone discharges fast, not to mention - with HDMI out connected I won't be able to connect external HD with movies... Oh, bother...
Or is there some magic do-it-all dongle?
I need it too .
I hate some cable in my bag. One Cable for all is great
USB OTG does not support charging as it has to supply current to the external device.
MHL (HDMI output) does.
Dude, I really hope I'm not misunderstanding, but what is the problem to which 'USB OTG and charging at the same time' is the solution?
Surely you pop your USB stick in, transfer the file and then... stick the charger/HDMI cable back in... and stream wirelessly/over your network?
What were you hoping to achieve? There are several options...
Just taking a guess... maybe he wants to use keyboard and mouse etc with his phone, desktop style

I wanted to do the same thing but it isn't possible . I do however stream from my nas if I don't want to copy stuff to the phone.
Technically, the USB-OTG standard includes provisions for handling this.
There are several occasions where you would want to plug an accessory into a USB-OTG port and still be able to hold the state-of-charge in the host device.
The specific document: Battery Charging Specification, rev 1.2
ACA subsection (Accessory Charger Adapter)
The ID_OTG pin acts as an input in this mode of operating, indicating whether or not the host is allowed to charge.
Figure 6-6 shows the typical architecture.
Sounds promising. I will look into that! Thanx.
Any news on this?? :fingers-crossed:
so can we use otg and mhl at the same time without charging
Yes, this is pretty much possible. I have implemented the aforementioned OTG ACA support and got it to CyanogenMod9 upstream. Anything which uses the same kernel (or, if you can cherry-pick changes and compile your own kernels), could use that too. Changeset URL: _ttp://review.cyanogenmod.com/#/c/15850/
You need to use a regular USB OTG cable, but place a 36 KOhm resistor between ID pin and GND, then you should connect GND and Vdd to some power source. I used an MHL adapter which I had no use for, as it had two of three connectors I needed. This setup allows me to watch movies from 2.5" notebook hard drive while simultaneously charging my phone if I plug in a 2A-rated adapter. Note that it's impossible to use 650mA charging rate due to chip restrictions (USB HC is too stupid to understand the direction of current flow, and it reports an over-current condition); you have to settle on 450mA.
If you don't know how to solder, or if you use something else than CyanogenMod9 and cannot compile your own kernels, you are out of luck.
I have tried to find an existing USB OTG ACA dongle, but I was not able to find any. If you will be more lucky than me, you can just use it--my patch is compliant with USB specification and will support any compatible dongle.
It's possible.

Hello,
I'm new to this forum as i didn't need it yet but now I have a question.
I know this thread is kind of old and I'm not sure if there are still (m)any people using a GT-I9100... though it would be interesting if anyone found a solution on this topic.
I read several threads where people were discussion if charging and OTG is possible at the same time but no one could verify a specific resistor. Actually i tried a resistor valued 124k between GND and ID but it didn't work. I also read about 36k and other values but nothing verified. Could take a while to try several resistors but i really no one knows a solution i'd try this
So just so sum up, i don't need "MHL and charging" or "audio out and charging". The mode i'm looking for is "OTG and charging".
My Goal: a Docking Station with mouse, keyboard, flash drive(s) and charging to remote control my computer with a software like splashtop.
Hopefully anyone has useful information on this, thanks a lot for any kind of support

Thanks for your answer!
Today i made my 36k cable, this weekend i should have some time for the kernel patch - hopefully
I still have some questions about the kernel as i didn't use any custom ROMs etc on my phone. All I have is a "standard" root kernel without any further changes but root. Need some hours to read into this. What i didn't understand: Do I have to use a specific CM9 or can i use any CM9 (or maybe CM10 or any other CM past 9)?
I wasn't able to get the link working "_ttp://review.cyanogenmod.com/#/c/15850/" when replacing "_" with "h". What can I find on that page?

USB OTG cable with charging - is that possible?

While researching ability to use USB DAC while charging the phone in the car I found this video. The guy clearly says that tablet is charging while accessing all those accessories via USB OTG. Similar cables are found on ebay, called "USB OTG with power".
The big question is: would the Galaxy S3 actually charge while using USB DAC at the same time? It should be possible, but I don't have the phone yet (still considering it), nor do I have the cable, nor a USB DAC In theory it should be the same with any accessory - can someone actually confirm either way, whether phone can or can't charge in USB OTG mode with similar cable? This video shows similar setup on Galaxy S (only it's normal OTG cable, USB hub, usb Y-cable and card reader) and it's definitely charging while mounting USB devices! Will S3 do the same?
I fear that upgrading from Galaxy S with voodoo control of Wolfson chip to north-American S3 with worse audio path might not suit me if there's no way to power the phone and use external DAC at the same time in the car... I hope there is a way... I appreciate any advice and opinions.
It's a first time I see such cable...All I read was people saying it's impossible in the first place. Well, hopefully in 2 weeks I'll be able answer your question

Sonic, any luck with your friends phone? Really looking foward to your results :fingers-crossed:
Do you have part #s for the variable resistors in your samsung post or at least where you got them from? I would be willing to try some things out if I could find the right pieces. What I really want to get my hands on is the MHL adapter that was shown off with that spider laptop at IFA a couple weeks ago..
SUCCESS!!! I can confirm that this USB OTG cable (http://ebayitem.com/190710044655) DOES CHARGE MY GALAXY S3! I plugged in USB cardreader with SD card into the phone through this cable (it lit up and card is fully readable), then plugged USB cable end into PC and phone showed a charging icon! Moreover, after waiting for 5 min. with screen off (cardreader still glowing blue and working) battery has gone up from %72 to %75 (and while I was writing this, to 78%), so it is indeed charging! Yay! It probably won't get up in the car, where just phone alone is "not discharging" at best from the car adapter, but at least it should allow me to listen to music with quality DAC and use navigation without (or with minimal) discharging.
I have not tested it with USB DAC that I intend to use for my car (Behringer UCA222), because I have to go out and buy it. Hopefully it works. Anyway, this cable definitely works with simultaneously charging my north-american Samsung Galaxy S3 (from Bell Canada) while powering USB cardreader!
Somebody else has mentioned that another cable (http://ebayitem.com/120980364117) also worked in his Galaxy S2.
I bought Behringer UCA222 USB DAC and tested it in my car with the USB OTG cable with power that I mentioned. It works great! And the phone is indicating a charge. Sometimes when first playing music after plugging the device it sounds like fast forward for a few seconds (I guess clock rate mismatch or something similar), but after the presumably clock is locked it plays perfectly fine.

Here is a better link for all the ebay listings. Be aware of the differences, MicroUSB adapters would allow you to use your existing charge cable to plug into it while the standard USB would require you to be very close to the charger or have a USB A-A cable to attach to a power source.

The problem is that apparently not all of those cable work in terms of charging the phone. People say mostly that it doesn't work. The only guy mentioned success is with the cable I bought, but he then confirmed it with another, more convenient cable. I have the one that needs a USB extension cable to reach the charger, but it's about a buck on ebay, so no problem there. But not all cables work this way: most reportedly will allow you to power USB accessories but not charge the phone.
I found that this configuration works for charging while in USB HOST mode:
S3 -> standard otg cable -> Powered USB2.0 HUB -> devices (keyboard, usb dac, usb hdd...)
The only catch is that the hub must be powered before you plug in the phone or the phone will try to power the hub and will never enter charging mode. I'm using this setup in my car and it works perfectly. As long as I start the car before plugging the phone, we are good to go.
I only confirmed this works with AOKP JB builds. No idea about other roms/kernels. Hopefully this helps someone.

Can't Get Mirco to USB OTG to work

Hey Guys,
I recently bought a Micro to USB OTG cable but unfortunately can't get it to work on my new S Tab(10.5).
I am able to get it to work on my Galaxy S3 phone and old Nexus 7 tab so it appears that the cable works fine. My S Tab is not rooted and currently does have the latest updates. I also ran the OTG checker which verifies that my tablet has the necessary files. When I run the OTG troubleshooter tho it does not appear to be picking up my cable at all.
I originally bought this to use my wired 360 controller on my tablet, the 360 controller and flash memory sticks are the only things I have tested on the cable itself. Like I said above, my S3 and Nexus 7 picks up these 2 devices just fine through the cable.
Anything that I am missing? Any tips/quirks to get this to work?
Thanks so much for your time/help!
P.S. attempted to post link to my exact cable but couldn't because I am a new member.
Are you willing to have device root and flash a custom kernel?
If yes, then my SkyHigh kernel does support OTG and has in-built XPAD (XBOX) controller module and confirmed working by another user. Some games may require you to map the controller with a certain app, some without.
FS support is dependent on kernel. If you are trying to mount NTFS r/w, then you will need to also install Paragon app or navigate to /mnt/ntfs/.... for kernel NTFS r/o
It's possible that it could be your cable. I had problems a couple years ago with an otg cable not working on my Note 2 but working in a couple older devices. It turns out it was because the micro usb end that plugs into the phone was too short to plug in all the way. I'm not sure if it's a new standard or something, but my Note 2, Note 8, S5 and Tab S all seem to have a cable with a longer micro usb tip than any of my previous devices have.
Hold the otg cable next to the charge cable that came with your Tab S and see if the tip of the otg cable is a couple of millimetres shorter. Also plug the charge cable into the tab and notice the way it kind of "clicks" into place when you push it in the last little bit. Now plug in the otg cable and see if it has the same "click" feel. If not, then I'd bet it's your cable. I have an otg cable that specifically states that it's for an S5 and it works perfectly on all the devices mentioned above. I also have a generic otg cable that works on my old galaxy nexus but doesn't work on any of the above devices.
Here's the old thread in case that helps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43764083
Thanks for the reply's.
I don't really want to go down the Root road because I have never gone through that process and don't feel comfortable with it at this time.
The cable Micro pin portion definitely doesn't fit as snug as the S Tab charger. The OTG cable actually appears to be longer than my S Tab charger Mirco pin. When plugged in you can tell it sticks out a smidge....The thing with that though, it does the same exact thing on my other 2 devices that work with the cable.
Guess it could be the cable, just hate to send this back and order another and be in the same boat.

Thanks for the reply's.
I don't really want to go down the Root road because I have never gone through that process and don't feel comfortable with it at this time.

Cable or no cable, if you wish XPAD controller, then you'll need the kernel or loadable kernel compiled module. Other features (some I described) also require kernel. ... all requiring root.
Since you've ruled that out, you just need to forget many features that are available with some other devices and move on.
Best of luck.

OnePlus 7 USB-C Dock Advice

I just received the phone and tried to use it with this dock with no results (the power led lights on and android P notifications shows the connection with a USB device, however it is not properly recognized).
I tried with an USB key, a mSD and with a HDMI cable attached. Any advice on alternative solutions? (both HW and SW).
I wish I could relate or let alone try to understand what you just said. I would have been fine with typos , but clearly your sentence structure is off even without proper punctuation. Regardless, thank you for the information sir.

Thanks for the tip Sir. I rewrote the sentences in a clearer way to make them easily understandable.
I was using a third party DASH cable originally for my OP3, with my OP7P and noticed it does the same thing as your dock. Side note the OP7P could not be recognized in fastboot with said third party DASH cable.
But the OEM cable works without fail ever time could be pin/or chip? configuration but I don't know enough about Warp/DASH/VOOC to say.

I made some further tests and these are the results:
- With the dock powered with a PD cable (so charging the phone as well) the video signal works as expected but no other devices are recognized (I tried a USB key, a keyboard and the usual microSD but none are visible)
- Using a simple USB-C to HDMI cable the video out works like a charm
I think the USB issue might be related to the drivers needed to identify the device (a similar situation happened to me on the Nexus 7 several years ago and I fixed it changing the kernel). For now I think I will have to find a different dock. The best one for my needs should have 2 USB, mSD slot, HDMI and Ethernet. Any tips?

One further update:
I used the same dock on the Mi A1 with Android P and it is properly recognized with both the mSD and the USB key attached. Obviously there is no HDMI out since the port is only a USB 2.0 one rather than a 3.1 like the OP7P.
At this point I think it might be related to drivers only, because the notification for an attached USB is there but it is not simply recognized (to be honest if i use the PD-USB while having the mSD inserted, the phone is charged but no popup for attached USB device is shown in that case).

Yeah I'm having the same issue, tried an HP dock and a Dell dock. Neither one supported USB. I don't understand why this is, never had this issue on older model Android phones. Must be the drivers.
FYI - The HP one displayed the picture on the monitor via HDMI, but wouldn't charge the phone. Dell one would charge, but wouldn't support the monitor. I have another model Dell dock that I'm going to try next week that I think will work better.
Another quick update.
All the test were performed with OTG on and with USB debug enabled and disabled to see if there are any differences in results(no differences for now)
Atzbee Dock
- HDMI Out working even without an external power source
- No USB drive/key detected
- Phone charging works
EC Technology Dock
- HDMI Out working even without an external power source
- No USB drive/key detected
- Phone charging works
So how can we escalate this to OnePlus? We should not be having these problems.
I made some further tests with several devices.
original OP OTG
Works with every device so far (not tested with Ethernet)
Vava 8 in 1 old & Vava 8 in 1 new
HDMI, USB flash, sd card and transflash work at the same time (even without an external power source).
I am finding problems in the connection of a keyboard or mouse that are never recognized (except for the original OTG cable)
Ethernet is never recognized.
To make sure before I buy one, the vava 8 in 1 hub works with usb flash drive while charging the phone?

Yes (on USB 3.0), however it is confirmed that is a limitation of the kernel, since flashing a different one seems to make everything work smoothly as reported here.

So it only works on a modified device? (unlocked bootloader, flash new kernel) stock does not work?

it works on USB .3.0 on hubs with stock kernel, but no keyboards or mouse (charging always worked for me). Modifying is needed to achieve the full functionality of the hub
You have to flash a custom kernel to get the USB type C keyboard and mouse working! Stock kernel does not work! Flash it and whalla! read my thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/help/otg-usb-hub-recognizing-mouse-keyboard-t3936188
I just want to report that this issue has been resolved with Android 10. The HP dock I was using now supports the keyboard and mouse. Display and charging also still works.
Well that's a huge bummer, I regret buying the tmo variant. I reported this and chatted with one of the people there about pd+otg issues. I am able to get usb hubs to work if plugged into a c-typeA(f) adapter. That of course means no PD or HDMI, so it's awesome that Android 10 includes that fix!

Hello quentin0, could you please share with us the model of the hp dock you are using ? Thanks a lot !
Everything works, SD card, Ethernet, HDMI (Desktop mode or Mirror which one you want), Keyboard, Mouse, Flash drive. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07XRJDMLD?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
Rooted but stock kernel even charge the phone but slowly if you supply external power.
