Bad battery life? Charger could be at fault. - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Woke up today to my backup phone, I'm waiting for my e4gt replacement's replacement to arrive, fully charged. I've been using the phone for one hour and forty five minutes on the web and I'm down to 72% battery. This phone is almost three weeks old and should be in the nineties or high eighties with the battery by now. I was charging it with an old Samsung charger last night. This is the second Samsung charger that I'm going to throw out because it doesn't have the charging capacity like it used to. I had a friend, years ago, that used to say to unplug the charger when not in use because it will shorten its life if you don't. He claimed the electronics inside wear out after awhile. I thought it was nonsense at the time but I am wondering now if he might have been onto something legit. Just one more thing to take under consideration when trying to figure out why your battery isn't charging fully, even with its trickle top off charge.

Gee, I don't know oscar, but you would make an interesting case study about what not to do with electronics.
I have two Epics since 11/2011 original phones with the original chargers that have not been unplugged since day one, except when we travel and unplug them to take with us, and the only thing that's been done was replace the batteries last Dec.
They are rooted since day one only one soft brick, and haven't had no issues, no trips to the sprint store, they just function every day, no problems, no complaints.
Hmmm. Maybe you have a unusual electromagnetic polarity that causes your body to damage electronic devices?
Do you have problems with toasters or microwaves? Hmmm.
Do you work where Homer works, in a nuclear reactor? Hmmm.
If you pick up a light bulb does it lights up? Hmmmm.
Try a ground strap.

Maybe try wearing a necklace/pendant with orgonite or particalized quantum quartz crystals, those devices have both been shown to reduce personal interaction with EMF, it might help your electronics issues somewhat, as well as providing the obvious benefit of potentially reducing the undesirable effects of EMFs on your body.
I've been wearing a quantum balance nano particle quartz mineral composite around my neck for about 2 months now, and it's been working great (just like Seeder, no one can agree that it ACTUALLY works or how it works, but almost everyone that sincerely tries it out gets good results despite that).
Disclaimer: I am not a hippie, but I don't worship the status quo either, this is just my 2cents on newer ideas about dealing with EMFs. Open minds required.

He'll I wish that after an hour and forty five minutes of screen on time I was only down to 72%. Sounds like a complaint about the battery being too good.

I hear the usb cables could to blame as well. the "charging juice" gets used up in them over time.

On a side note concerning battery, I noticed that my battery charging is occurring in less time than before.

I think the stock battery of this phone is 2500 and it usually doesn't go down that fast. When I was getting ready for work I turned off the phone and hook it up to a different charger. Then on the way to work, I put it on the car charger and he was fully charged by the time I got to work. Right now, it is over 6 hours later and I am at 74 percent battery. And this was with listening to a lot of streaming radio.

I said in my first post that I had a backup phone. It isn't an e4gt. Regardless of what brand it is, or where this post should be, I have experienced this with my e4gt many times. Back to the subject of the post. I charged my backup on a different charger last night. I unplugged 50 minutes ago and I'm at 93% now. This is what I meant when I was talking about sometimes old chargers can stop providing a good overnight charge. I've read in instructions for after market extended life batteries to let it top off trickle charge for a few hours after it hits 100% full charge. I know this topic might have been brought up before. There might be some who didn't see it or might at least take it with a grain of salt to try if they might have battery or charging problems in the future. I put my e4gt, the one that is waiting to be replaced, on the same newer charger last night when I was at work. It already had a full charge with the extended battery that was in it. When I got home, unplugged it and started using it, it stayed at 100 for around 30 minutes before the level began going down.

Well since you aren't directly talking about the E4GT, you are in the wrong forum. It is not the chargers fault anyways. It is either an old battery or erroneous apps causing your battery drain. How can it possibly be the charger when it isn't connected to the device? It is in no way related to the charger not providing enough power. If that were the case, it would either not charge the device at all, or charge it very slowly. Once it us disconnected it will have no effect on the phone.

Maybe the power company is reversing the polarity on your electricity and sucking the juice out of your battery?

Official Sammy 2000mah vs anker 1900mah

I'm getting both soon so ill post a review. Anyone have experience with both?
Initial reaction to 2000mah - WOW. destroys even my old iPhone 4. And on my iPhone I actively turned off wifi, data etc. On my sgs2 wifi is on the whole time, and I've been listening to music on my Beats (battery hog) the whole time. Right now I'm on 80% after 1.5 hrs screen on 33% brightness, and beats playing the whole time. Stock ROM btw!

ive posted pictures in the other anker battery threads , you can see the explosion marks , iam so glad i was at home while it happend , that the battery wasnt in my phone at the time and nothing more serious happend
ive sent it back to amazon on the same day i got it and bought a genuine 2000mah battery from clove now lmao
others seem to of had better luck then me but thats now 2 people who have had these explode that i have read/experienced about , thats 2x too many for me to use one again and risk my face or phone or a house fire

itll probs be ok dude but i got to say and warn people otherwise if anything happend i would feel bad
i think it was more the charger , it was the cheap black one , not the white anker one , perhaps this is why it blew up??
however this is a review for the sensation version and again it blows up when in the charger
http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-rev...?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&filterBy=addOneStar
here you can see the cheap black charger
here you can see the proper anker white charger
I bought the same kit, two anker batteries with the black charger, no problems, been charging them fine, in fact they last a fair amount more than the original battery, my usual usage on the standard battery has me reaching for the charger around 8 hours, I am typing this out with the same kind of usage with 42% battery life left, I would say you had a faulty charger, not unusual with most things made so ****e these days from china, hardly any product testing done anymore, I have used my anker black charger lots and its worked a treat.

it exploded in the charger, not in the phone...
99% it was a faulty charger that havent been tested. I dont think it will ever blow up in your pocket
As stated before these batteries are fine it's the very cheap build chargers, if you ever open one up you would more likely dash it in the bin exposed connections. Bay the batteries and a good brand changer...

Spare OEM Battery

I've been Quoted INR 900 (USD 17) for OEM S3 battery by Samsung Service center and tomorrow I am going to buy it, as mine last only 1.5 days.Anyone thought of doing same?
R u mad?? 1.5 days is more then enough
This is ridiculous
If I have assisted you, please press Thanks button.
With my S1 and then S2 I purchased 3 spare batteries and in-wall charger off eBay for about 11usd. In roughly 2 years they never let me down. Keep 1 in the car, 2 at home and 1 in the phone obviously.
I have already bought 3 for my S3. Should be here next week.

Why charge your phone when you can just pop the back cover and slap a full battery in? I have rarely used the charger in 2 years.
From 0 to 100% in 30 seconds. That's why I love a removal battery.

Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
You do make a great point. Replace a battery in 3 minutes or charge the phone for a few hours.
I have never used a spare battery,
All my phones have only needed one charge a day, my iphone 4 i would plug in for on hour or so before getting out of bed
I have modified my S3 so it just needs to be placed on the palm touchstone, so whenever i put my phone down on the bedside cabinet it charges
Samsung will be releasing thier own wireless charger in the next few months, nothing simoler than just placing your phone on the charging pad, certainly easier then messing around removing tne fiddly and delicate rear cover of the phone
Even car charhers are so cheap now, and just 20 minutes on the way to work will add quite a bit of power
Its not like a few years ago when the smartphone would need constant charging because the battery on lasted a few hours
However, if you prefer keeping spare batteries then thats your choice, and whatever works for you is all that is important.. Enjoy your S3's.

The only trouble with no oem batts, is they dont normally have the NFC stuff in, so no good if you use NFC
Last year I was caught short 6 times with unplanned stuff that happened and didn't have enough charge and had to swap the battery over, so I'll definitely be getting a spare and keeping in the glovebox along with my emergency charger, and if I had an IPhone or One X I would have been stuffed, and that's why I'm never gonna buy a phone without a removable battery even though some experts say that's the future of Smartphones.
Im always by a charger but sometimes (weekend night) I will need a spare so its always nice to have the option to swap batteries.
Question though.
If I get another OEM Samsung battery with NFC chip does anything on the phone need to be reset each time I swap back n forth or will it just pick up after each swap.

FI-27 sprint samsung issues.

With regards to either poor battery life or usb failure or modem issues. This has been acknowledge by sprint. As i sent my phone in today they were already aware of the problem. For those of you whove had luck with stock fi-27 good for you. For others nothing will save your phone your better off just sending it in. Reverting back to gb will do nothing because of the coding from ics that causes your usb port to fail and then this becomes a hardware failure. Just a heads up.

The "voltage too high" warning is hardware failure not software related. Its caused by either the USB port getting dirty or going bad or the charging module on the logic board failing. Battery bulge is caused by excessive heat and/or overcharging which is caused by the charging module not shutting the input off like its supposed to. Both are hardware failure and not directly related to software. Although the excessive heat issue can come from wakelocks keeping the processor running for too long increasing the phones temp which will result in a swollen battery if left alone. I had the battery bulge from excessive heat plus my battery has been charged more times than the avg 500 cycles which weakens its core structure making it more likely to fail from excessive heat.

What would you say is a normal battery temp?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
My battery temp ranges from 24C at idle to 42C under load. In normal use it sits around 32.
lol cool story bro. get a replacement and never update your phone.. ur more then able to always stay on old setups .. fi27 has been amazing for me.. only issues ive had were user error

Try to stay below 115°F in use anything over 120 starts causing damage after long periods (30+ mins @120°+) idle it should stay between 90° and 100°F due to body temp if its in your pocket, below 90° if sitting on a desk or table indoors. I've had mine get as high as 150° F while charging over night when my battery started bulging so now i place a gel ice pack with a towel on it on my desk and sit the phone on the towel while it charges overnight until my new battery arrives. Its kept my phone around 80° F when I wake up and as low as 70°F when the ice pack is fresh. Once the bulge begins the battery gets really hot really fast from the internal damage causing a chemical reaction. The bulge separates the internal deviders that keep the chemical blocks separated normally. If a good(structurally sound) l-ion battery reaches 200°F it can rupture causing severe chemical burns. I've done a few tests using a Plexiglas box over a hotplate with a battery on the hotplate until it ruptured, after I saw reports of laptop batteries exploding and didn't believe they'd really blow up.

Okay thanks! Mine got to about 115F but that was because it was in the car and it was also off. When mine charges it only goes as high as 92, which I'm going to guess is good.

I am running FI27 and I have no problem with this release. This release is probably the last ICS we will get. I'm running at 19 hours and it's at 67%.
Oh and BTW I did have the over voltage charging problem. Went in and had them replace the phone and a brand new battery and it hasn't happened at all. This was a couple of months ago though.

Yea the cooler the better, I live in FL if I left my phone in the car it would probably explode in the summer. It can easily get over 175 in the direct sunlight inside my car. It gets so hot it steals your breath when you get in. Before my battery started bulging I'd rarely break 110 using it playing a game for 2 or 3 hours. Now with the bulge it barely gets below 100, but my battery looks like its pregnant its swollen so bad. Once it starts it just get worse and worse and the longer it goes the faster it swells. This last week I've been able to see a difference day to day with the naked eye. Hopefully this new battery gets here soon, so I can ship my OEM to Samsung, already got the shipping label just can't go without my phone while I wait.

Im just gonna get right to it. On my last two topics i explained how after the new update my battery life is beyond terrible. 20% drop in 30 mins with no use. I got my battery replaced. Same result. Went to my sprint store a day later. Found out after people have updated to the new ics FI27 35% now have borked phones. Atleast 18% are battery issues. I am one of the percents. With said i hope people read this. If anyone can offer suggestions to fix this im open to it. But please know i have gone back to gb and the technician at sprint told me it wouldnt matter because of the coding of ics. This also relates to the car chargers telling your phone when trying to charge it the "voltage is to high."
With that said besides going back to gb im open to other options. Thanks for your help.

Im not worried about ICS, Im on JB. Root your phone, get rid of all the bloatware, and load what you want. Take control of your situation, or sit back and complain. It your choice.
Hey OP, I'm not minimizing your issues at all, I'd just like to know where those percentages came from for borked phones from fi27..?
And 35% from what number of known updates at the time? Gotta have a base number to have a percentage.

You mean the sprint reps that can't give you the same answer twice? Yea OK, I'm sure s/he pulled some numbers out of thin air to shut you up and avoid doing anything resembling real work most of the reps/techs at any service center's knowledge is limited to what's on the piece of paper infront of them. So I've been looking at these mounts and am on the fence about it. Costs a bit more than you would usually drop on a mount ($70-$100), but reviews of it are quite amazing. The sticky/suction pad is apparently really good, and the arms are stable and have a smooth release. On top of that it has a built in NFC chip. Now the Wireless Charging is where i get a little iffy. This device puts out 750mA. Comparitively the Nexus 4 charging orb puts out 1,000mA. I also have read in various places that some of Nokia's wireless chargers have a cycle issue where the device charges/stops/charges/stops. This effect might be visible on a Nexus 4 using this charger at this video (53seconds). Anyone have one they can test, or have recommendations to a similar mount?
I've read a lot of reviews about a critical part breaking easily.
Sent from my SGS3.
So, did anyone tried it? Does it work with Nexus 5?
From the info that i could dig, the nexus 4 does not work, probably because the location of the charging coil.

From what I've read and researched, the problem wasn't with Nokia's chargers but the first versions of the N4, later revisions worked fine.

When you put a Nexus 5 in the Nokia CR 200 it initially shows charging. Some time later (5, 10 ,30 seconds, maybe a few minutes - it seems to vary) it will stop charging. If you leave the phone in the dock, it will intermittently charge.
In my test over a couple of hours, the phone discharges pretty fast.
My conclusion is that it's useless as a charger for the Nexus 5.
If anyone has a workaround, I'd love to know, as the CR 200 is an otherwise sturdy bit of kit and I'm not sure what QI Wireless alternatives are available.

Thanks for letting us know. I've been actively seeking a qi car mount with nfc and this one was the prime choice aside from building my own. I wonder if it has to do with the bottom piece that sticks out for holding your phone in portrait mode, maybe the qi coils just aren't close enough together.
Nokia CR 200 works with Nexus 5 without any problems.
I received the Nokia cr 200 from Amazon yesterday and can confidently say it works brilliant. I haven't got any problems as mentioned in this thread. Just place the phone in the charger and the light at the bottom goes green and charged as it should. NFC is OK but got to know where the NFC chip is at the back of Nexus 5. I used the Google maps navigation and BT music streaming to my ford sony dab unit at the same time for about 50mins and the battery percentage just stays at the same level as before putting on charge. With BT music streaming it actually charges as the screen is switched off I guess. Its a good quality car mount but he clip is not the strongest I would say. Suction is absolutely fine as it has a stickiness to the suction. I don't know what app I got to use to check the charge voltage etc. Pls let me know if u want to know any details. But it works as it should very happy.
Out of curiousity, if NFC is so important, why not just buy an NFC sticker and slap it on there? Is it because it wouldn't look as cool?

have a look at what "OWL" has to offer...I ordered One....we'll See what this thing can Do.
More of a note to myself so I can find the thread again, but also just ordered one. Have a long car journey next week so should be able to give it a good run in, if it arrives in time.
Amazon seem to be doing it for £54 which seemed to be the cheapest outside of ebay
So it arrived today from Amazon and have had a bit of a play
Initial thoughts is that it is quite sturdy and looks good. Did the shake test and it did not come away, however a point of note is that it seems to grip but give it another squeeze to make it go a couple more notches in which kept the back flush with the charging plate. Just squeezing the grips until it makes contact won't hold it firmly in place and you get movement like on the Youtube review.
I've connected it to my bench supply as I'm at work. With the screen off/no GPS running its charges from 72% to 100% in just over an hour. The screen seems warm to touch and the back hotter which was expected. I've not had it been or connect/disconnect charging as mentioned in some reviews but I stress that this is on my desk at work.
Tonight drive home is about 40 min so will run TomTom and see if there is any power drop and tomorrow I have a 200 mile round trip so I can get some good testing done then as well. I'm hoping I will see the battery stay at the same level as when it was connected.
Does anyone have any suggestions of a launcher tailored to cars (car mode)?
Hi More testing done and I'm impressed so far.
Setting back home last night, I set TomTom up, the Settings of the phone was
GPS - Device Only
Automatic Backlight
TomTom in night mode
The battery at the start was 66% and at the end of the 2 1/2 hour journey it grew to 79%. So the phone charged while the screen was on and was using GPS.
Now admittedly this was not during the day, I did not have time to check the battery on the journey to the destination, however I did not notice any really drop in the battery from the icon. However halfway through the journey I noticed that the battery was not charging as I was rushing when I placed the phone in the cradle it was not fully flush with the back plate and/or I did not squeeze the clips that would hold it in place securely.
I need more testing but I think using this would be fine, potentially if you had full backlight and GPS running with TomTom in day mode I guess there may be a drop in the battery, but not much.

I'm sorry but I do not have or use a case. If someone would like to send one to me for a few days I'm more than happy to test.
Next week when I have a chance I will attach it to my bench supply and do some testing at different levels of brightness and more than happy to test with bumpers/cases if people like to send them
I'm rather surprised by those of you getting it to charge, mine wouldn't put through enough charge when GPS, screen on and streaming music.

[*NEW*] Nexus 5 Battery Upgrade! BL-T19 2700mAh Mod (nexus 5x battery)

The Nexus 5 was produced a while ago, more than 4 years!
But this phone is still fast and I'm using it as my daily device. But there was one problem, the battery!
If you want to replace it you still get an (if you're lucky) an original used battery. If you're unlucky it's a fake one or it was just lying around, loosing all capacity and is at least as bad as the battery you already have.
In 2013/2014 a lot of people managed to press an Lg G2 battery inside the nexus, the BL-T7
BUT this phone and it's battery is very old, like the nexus 5
I tried the BL-T7 Mod, after receiving a lot of fake batterys, I finally got an original one, but yeah, still a 3 years old battery, that was lying around - so it was not good at all, and I lost NFC and Wireless charging
See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/3000mah-battery-mod-lg-g2-battery-t3651460/post73284739#post73284739
#############################################################################
Here is what I got for you:
On Ebay, I was looking for a new phone (because of bad battery life) and I found a perfectly fine looking Nexus 5x for 20€, the seller said it won't turn on. I ordered it and i did not manage to repair it, the seller just lied, bc he didn't say it was damaged by water
What I did: I saw the battery, thought about, "hey this is a 2016 battery, original and it may fit"
I ripped it out and really managed to swap this 2700mAh BL-T19 battery with my Lg G2 3000mah BL-T7 battery that was inside my nexus
And holy, THIS BATTERY LIFE! - 5hours SOT under heavy load!: https://imgur.com/a/sOdT0
https://imgur.com/a/HAm8e "normal load"
https://imgur.com/a/x2kXO min brightness, not doing much (only whatsapp), I know that is unrealistic, but at least, it's achievable!!
Benefits:
it's a new Battery (produced in 2015/2016)
NFC working!
Wireless charging working!
The nexus 5x had a lot of problems, a lot of dead phones, and if you're lucky you can buy a defective phone (like me) and get a fully functional battery!!
#############################################################################
NOTE: Use Tape, this is a powerful battery, if the wires touch each other, it may start burning
I won't take any responsibility if your phone get's destroyed!
#############################################################################
How I did this:
this is a BL-T19:

and this is the one in the nexus 5 (BL-T9):
as you can see, the nexus 5x's is longer, but it's the same width. It's longer than the lg g2's one so i had to make space
I won't make pictures of my mod because i already did it, closed my phone and I really don't want to reopen it did it, see below (5.)
1. Completely disassemble your phone, you need to remove metal from the frame
2. Search a dremel to make space: I have no dremel so I used a DC motor and put sandpaper with zip ties on it (https://imgur.com/a/O7SIU)
3. Now remove metal from the frame, I have here some pictures on my testing phone frame: https://imgur.com/a/53tbX
4. Replace the battery! Do it exacly like here: https://imgur.com/a/Yj7ww
I won't decribe it any further, you may ask for help here or in older threads (Lgg2 battery replacement)
5. Here are some other Pictures I edited for you, the 2nd and third are the important ones! https://imgur.com/a/lpz8W
here are Pics of my mod, don't worry, mine looks a little different because I used another batteryboard because I broke my original one: https://imgur.com/a/8BLVj
6. You're done! try to bootup, close the phone, and be happy about a big battery NFC and Wireless charging!!!
Note that you may have to remove some plastic from the cover that goes onto the mainboard,

Did that mod yesterday, so I don't know yet
Update: I did my first full charge 2 hours ago, have 1h sot and still 91% left, holy moly
Update 2: 77%, 2.5h sot: whatsapp, browsing and youtube half brightness and an slight overclock to 2.35Ghz (elementalx kernel)
Will report tomorrow after a full day usage because for now i'm gonna load it overnight
Okay my test results are here!
https://imgur.com/a/sOdT0
My display brightness was maxed out most of the time.
5h Sot for an intensive workload is very impressive! I tried everything except gaming to stress the hell out of that battery, and it lasted so long!
I'm gonna test a normal workload and upload pictures here if you want.
wow great work!
I'm still using the hammy as my daily driver and using the first original battery.
will try your mod if I have time and the technician
https://imgur.com/a/HAm8e 7 ****ing hours!
https://imgur.com/a/x2kXO Wow.
.... That seems a little crazy for a battery that has only 400mAh higher capacity than the original 2300.. so.. a 20% boost?
Well, I undervolted and my screen was on low brightness
But my core clock is at 2.35Ghz
It was not a worst case, but it's real
and it's not only 20%, because the original battery is veeery old, you are very lucky if you get one with more than 1700mah left
I doubt any of us were getting 5-6 hours SOT even 4 years ago.. maybe, though. It has been a long time. I'm not doubting you, just wondering out loud how that works out since the math sounds weird.

Mostly it's because I really tried to get the best Sot, with using it not much. So my phone was a long time on my desk with whatsapp open, and I was only texting.
That's no usual usage, my usual usage was 7 hours Sot, still impressive
Looks difficult to replace mate
sure, it's not the easiest swap.
Bit if you can use a dremel and solder 5 cables there should be no problem
I did my mod in 2h
expect 1h because theres no need to try and error anymore
I picked up a 5x battery and was going to attempt this but holy cow, you have to make about 1cm of room from cutting the frame/plastic covers. That's far more material than I'm comfortable doing... I'd say keep looking for a similarly sized battery since you're manually wiring the electrodes to the mainboard anyway...

EDIT: I reopened my phone to fix something up, I made Pictures: https://imgur.com/a/8BLVj

Ah I did miss that. Once I peeled the battery and swapped boards it appears to fit with trimming just the top and bottom borders.
That said, it still didn't work for me... I must've fried my board because it just keeps booting to the battery icon over and over, even when I remove the battery connections.
Also, in your pics you seem to only have two wires directly soldered to the three pads below the battery connector then another wire going into the battery connector itself... is that right?
Anyone know if there's a way to recover from the battery icon reboot sequence? I'm able to get to the fastboot mode, but if it tries to boot into recovery or system it'll just shut off and go back to the battery icon.

That's exactly the reason why I now use another battery board. I killed my original one and had the same battery icon reboot problem. And yes one wire is going to the battery connector itself because I broke the pin on the board, but don't worry, It's the same connection. So you can either use the pins or the connector or a mix between
To 'recover' your phone, try to just disconnect the third pin, this is the thermal sensor pin. It's on the board the very left one. Here's a picture with just the + and - connected: https://imgur.com/a/GVPMt
Great mod! I may try it when i get a nexus 5x battery. Btw, how are this golden "wires" called? (The ones that goes from the positive and negative to the board)
