[Q] Why don't emailed text messages thread properly? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I have older relatives who do email but not text messaging, so I've enabled them to text me by putting a "mailto" link on their desktop that uses a provider's SMS gateway. As an example, for a verizon owner, if I set up this mailto it would address the email to "[email protected]". In this way, my older relatives can text me by just sending an email. This works pretty well all around.
However, I'm finding that the text messages I get have a 10-digit number in the "from" field, and even with messages from the same person, that number is always different, although it appears to increment. As an example, I sent myself three text messages in a row via email, and the number in the From incremented by one each time.
These messages won't thread obviously because the From field is always different, which is a little irritating but I'm more curious about how this is working than anything else right now.

I've always had this issue but don't use it often. I never figured out how to fix it. Have you tried a different app ? Not that it would matter but maybe its sending programs issue and not the phones

Issues with text messages - Receiving multiple issues and text messages from 9016

I literally just got the phone yesterday, and have been setting it up. However, I have a weird issue with the phone.
I have been getting:
//Android: Provisioning successful CFv320c.0=07cyssw33WNC//CM
From reading around it seems to be a text message for Visual Voicemail application. I have opened up Visual Voicemail and opened up all of the voicemail files. I use Google Voice, so these texts are useless for one, but I don't even want to receive them. I can't select a different Voicemail option in the "call" settings menu, otherwise I would have changed it.
Second, I keep getting the same text message from people. I have received 7 instances of the same text message, and I know that they aren't sending the same message because it has happened for four people, and for the message contents listed above for the visual voicemail.
This is not a rooted phone, I will probably end up rooting it, but not just yet, so is there any way to get around these messages and text issues?

Did you have google voice?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yes, I have used Google Voice on my previous phone (HTC Hero) as well. Google Voice is also setup on the Epic 4G Touch, using the *28 code.
Bump, I am aware that it is a networking issue, but I want to rule out some things first.
I have an "airave" at my house, and I am wondering (because the airave is on a different floor) if the phone is swapping between the tower and the mini-sip tower, making me receive multiple text messages?

Question for Google Voice users

Hi everyone,
I'm using a GSM version of our GN. I only use Google Voice as I change carriers very often therefor I never want to give the carrier phone number.
When receiving a call on ICS we have 3 options:
- pick up
- Decline
- or send a quick preset text message.
Is there a way to make the phone send the text message out of GV and not the carrier Caller ID?
I'd pay for an app to do just that.
Thanks
turn off texting on the phone altogether and it forces GV to send any texts...but you lose MMS capability...
when you choose to send text, does it ask you if you want to send it through GV or regular? probably not if the call comes in on your regular number...try having someone call your GV number and send them a text to see which number shows up...
if that works, just use the GV number for everything
Yeah the text reply is useless because it uses the built in texting and not the GV app. That was the case when I tried it a year or two ago it might have changed now but I doubt it.
Also GV has MMS now (receiving).

I've heard rumors some people can get MMS. (through some kind of forward to gmail setup) but it's never worked for me.

Not quite... you can receive MMS from a Sprint sender. That's it. Your provider doesn't matter, nothing else matters. Only Sprint senders.
None of my friends have Sprint (or anyone I know really) so for all intents and purposes GV still doesn't have MMS (at least for me).
On a similar note...does anyone else feel google treats Google Voice as a red headed stepchild?
I have been using a year and a half old version of the app because it's the only one that treats the back button as an actual return to main screen button...instead of some funky cycle through every previous text button. It is also the last version to handle notifications correctly (newer versions keep the notification in task bar if you reply to one online)
I've tried setting my phone to use GV as the default way to send texts, but still see he same bad behavior with Verizon texts being sent from quick messages. Sucks!
Probably will need an updated dialer from google, but if anyone has any other ideas I'll try them...

I don't think so. I receive MMS from people all the time in my inbox (Sprint and non-Sprint). You have to make sure email notification when you get a text is on I think.

[Q] Split texts over 160 characters. Is there a fix?

I have two related mediocre annoyances with text massages:
1. When sending a text greater than 160 characters, the receiver receives it split as two, starting with "(1/2)..." and "(2/2)...".
2. When receiving a text message greater than 160 characters, I not only see the same "(1/2)," but when it should be only two separate texts, it gets split into three and almost always out of order.
I've tried the stock messaging app, handcent, chomp, and go sms...same thing for all of them. I understand that this mostly has to do with Verizon's CDMA network. Is there anything that can be done in custom ROMs or Messaging apk's to fix this?
My info:
Network: Verizon
Phone: Galaxy Nexus
ROM: AOKP M3
Kernel: Matr1x
160 characters is the limit for sms text messages for every phone on the planet.
its the limit of the sms system, not the phones or the cellphone companies.
This is definitely just how SMS works.
That is an option in the settings of the SMS application. Normally, the message is joined automatically by the receiver phone, unless you specify that the GN has to split it itself.

Yes, I'm well aware of that. However, the text messages are not getting rejoined by neither sender nor receiver as they should be.

ICS Messaging - Only show contacts w/ Mobile number option?

Hi All,
Back in the days of using GB, I remember that the stock messaging app had an option to show only contacts w/ mobile numbers, so that you wouldn't accidentally select a landline or office phone to text (it might have been default functionality, actually - if a number was labeled as 'home' it wouldn't show up, however all 'mobile' numbers would).
Anyway, in ICS, I noticed that *all* numbers for a given contact show up when composing a new message. This seems to defy common sense, as I cannot send a text message to my parents' house landline.
Is there any way to make sure non-mobile numbers aren't shown when composing a new message?

I am having the same problem on my rooted HTC Rezound with ICS. Not only does the text message compose function show all of the phone numbers for a contact, but it displays their mobile numbers as "Home" along with their real Home numbers, so it is impossible for me to know which number to select. Surely someone has figured this out already?
I think you just have to make sure that mobile numbers are set as mobile numbers and home numbers are set as home numbers. To do this you will have to edit each of your contacts. It might be easiest to do it from a computer.

[Q] Text Messages Compiled help

I have a problem that i have tried to google but haven't came up with any results, maybe i'm asking the wrong way but this is a big issue for me personally.
some contacts i have (eg John) uses to mobile numbers, a personal and business.
i send text messages to both of his numbers depending the time of day and what the messages are concerned.
htc stock text message app compiles both these numbers under the same thread under the same contact name.
so basically when i go into the message thread, i'm seeing messages that i send to his personal and business number.
i can select to view which number for John the messages sent and received but sometimes it gets confusing, not used to
is there a way where i can have 2 John message threads when i get into the stock text message app? as this way will help me determine on what number am i sending to and keep the business to business and personal to personal.
i can't find any setting for that within the app and still have not come across this topic when tried to google
**besides using another 3rd party app like 'GO SMS' is there a way to solve this?
