So as everyone knows our brilliant screen and auto brightness eat batteries like candy. Many people, understandably, disable auto brightness to conserve battery life. I haven't gone that far yet as I do use my phone in many different environments and enjoy the dynamic brightness. With that said auto brightness does set the brightness unnecessarily high.
Would it be possible to adjust auto brightness so that it still functions but sets brightness 10-20% (or a user specified value) lower than normally?
I'm not sure this would save as much battery as statically setting the brightness (is it the "auto" adjustment that drains battery or the brightness it sets it at?) but I'm sure it would be better than stock auto brightness.
You cannot do this from stock rom to my knowledge, but I'm sure there is a custom rom that will allow you to do this. You might have to search around a bit though.

Cool, question: will this actually reduce battery usage or possibly cause more by enabling so many extra features?
If you're willing to rebuild android from source you could try changing device/samsung/tuna/overlay/frameworks/base/core/res/res/values/config.xml to have a more subtle brightness adjustment.
Or maybe running yet another app is easier in the meantime... But maybe someone who builds custom roms might want to hack at it...
The juice defender app has a schedule for brightness i believe, So it will come on automatic during the times frames you set..good luck

Ah thanks that's what I was looking for. You can't mod this file directly without rebuilding from source? Would be cool to be able to apply this to any ROM.

Editing default auto brightness levels was a Cyanogen 7 feature. If it hasn't yet been added into CM9, it'll eventually get there.

Why is it useless? I have been playing with it since yesterday and really like it, much better than system auto brightness. I don't really feel it's missing anything it the free version though I'm pretty sure I'll buy it just to support the developer. Very nice app.

Same here, it is a very nice app! I love how I can customize the brightness to match my environment and needs.
In my case, I selected "auto brightness inly on wake" in Lux Auto Brightness and it is draining battery. I paid for it but I am going to uninstall it.
Please Vito, let us know how to improve battery with Lux configurations. Thaks
While I can't provide any input on Lux, I also wrote an custom auto brightness application which can be found on Market here.
The market version isn't really good on Gnex though, you may just contact me and I'll send you the last dev version, it is now alright. I myself have a GNex and now it's alright. It would take me about 2 weeks till I'll be able to update Market version, most likely - there are enough things to add.
Anyone experiencing any lag with the auto-brightness adjusting when you you turn on the screen? It's not all the time but sometimes my screen seems to stay pretty dim for awhile before adjusting.

Auto brightness on this phone sucks big time. Its useless, either the screen is very bright or very dim. On my EVO lte auto brightness was kick ass. Its always gave me the right amount of brightness base on my light situation, while on this phone it only seems to have 2 settings.

As far as I know, there's no fix yet. But you may want to give Lux (workaround ) from market ago for now.

Have you noticed a significant battery drain with Lux? I'm assuming you need to disable the stock auto-brightness to use it right?

Ive been using LUX since i got my GS3.....im in and out of places all day long and LUX seems to work GREAT for me....no real battery drain imop.
Just hate having the icon in top bar.....but im used to it now

I was able to remove the icon in the settings.
Is there any way to remove the stock brightness slider from notifications? It's kind of pointless with Lux.

went from a well lit room to a dark room....no change opened lux and it changed levels. did this a few times.
that was an early build and ive kept the same settings since....maybe ill try again with current version.

Gotcha. I haven't had any issues so far but I'll post in this thread if I do. I love this app! It's 10x better than the stock auto-brightness setting.
xperia z1 compact brightness change itslef even when i have turned off the auto brightness. for example, the brightness becomes dimmer when the overall display colour is dark or black colour and it becomes brighter when the ovrall display colour is white or bright colour. i mean im able to notice there is a slight change in display brightness when im viewing photo, watching videos or surfing inernet. the brightness just change itself even when i turn off the auto brightness. so is there any solution or is there anyone has same curcamstances?

I've noticed the same issue, especially when browsing using Dolphin
Two ideas (which both may be totally wrong).
Does the phenomenon occur anywhere or only in certain apps? Some apps just ignore certain system settings and mess with the phone how they want or how is defined within the respective app settings (like switching to auto-brightness even when it is turned off in the android system settings). There seem to be some very basic points missing in the holy whatever-app-coding-styleguide for android: Options shall always be OPTIONAL and, in case of doubt (which is always), don't fcuk with stick to the system defaults ... but I'm running off the track here.
With auto-brightness turned-on, there may be some slight loop-back kind of behaviour in that a brighter screen also creates a brighter environment for the light sensor, thus, making the device turning up brightness even more. Things like that happen in control/measurement systems all the time (well, not really all the time, but they do happen). I've never seen it on my phone, though. So, this is a very very hypothetical hypothesis if I may say so.

I'll look again just to make sure, there might have been a placebo effect...
I noticed the behavior in the kindle app. When reading white text on a black background the screen got brighter when there was a white chapter start image.

You are right, just placebo on my part, when duplicating the error case I noticed it in, the CABL is still there.
I really really wanted it to work though, that must count for something... :-/

From google I got cabl=content adaptive backlight and it is intended for changing backlight change.. But what is its advantage?? Is it battery saver or battery eater??

I know this is for z1c, but I just got my hands on a z1 c6903 and it seems to do this a lot and fade on dark colours. I read that on 4.2.2 there used to be an optimized backlight option and disabling it would stop the screen doing it but it was taken out from kitkat. Does anyone know if any custom kernels would fix it? It's just really annoying.

Yes, once your devise is rooted, you can change the brightness in the build properties with Rom Toolbox. But, be warned that if you are not familiar with this you should avoid changing build properties. If you don't know what you are doing you can really screw up your phone.

Probably not, as the brightness for most people is fine. You may be in a group of select few who think the brightness is to low. Make sure your auto brightness is off and turn it all the way up. You will however compromise battery with the brightness turned all the way up.

I happen to think in most situations the auto-brightness selects too low a value, however in general (manual control) it is more than sufficiently bright, even in direct beach sun.

Have you tried training it for a few days by adjusting the brightness to your needs?
For me, it works perfectly after the training phase.
There is no way a normal user can do it, on a locked device. I am sure there are ways with root there are ways to fix this. This was my biggest issue for a week when I got Android 9, and now 10 (since in 10 whatever was learned in pie, at least for me, was lost). After a week of teaching it how I want things to do, it just does it at it should.

The point is ML doesnt obey my commands. Thats why i want to disable it.
It learns ok. but when it finishes his learning phase i cant control the Brightness manually.
For example:
ML increases Brightness to %100
but thats too much for me for that moment
so i am trying change it to %50 and then
ML immediatly increases Brightness to %100
I cant control the Brightness after the Learning phase. Its just so dumb.
I just want back my old but gold Light Sensor.

What do you mean by learning phase? It tells you, that leaning phase is over and it's not adjustable anymore or what? :laugh:

Indeed, you are right, the old fashion system pre-9 was much better, and much more reliable. You set a point on the slider and the auto-brightness only modified slightly in that area. Until the auto-brightness post-9 learns it's a chore, and after that... teaching it new things, it's again a chore.
The whole process is related to the Device Health Services subsystem where you can reset the whole learning to factory default. Maybe from there, you can have some success, but from what I've googled, there is no way to do that on stock locked. Maybe there are xposed, or magisk modules that could take care of that.

Wow.. I have never seen that. Been using 9 since it came out, with the latest sec. patch every time. I've adjusted the brightness many times, but I've never seen this happen.
Is it the same if you drag it instead of tapping a new location for the knob?
Also, I have the complete Digital Wellbeing bs disabled for a long time now, maybe that's why I've never seen this? Might have to do something with it.
