[ROM][ZIP] Stock Rooted Deodexed/ Debloated GC01 for SPH-D710BST(Boost) - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

[ROM][ZIP] Stock Rooted Deodexed/ Debloated GC01 for SPH-D710BST(Boost)
Ok, bear with me. This is my first attempt at cooking a ROM. I want to start off by saying that I am by no means a developer, just someone who is interested in learning how to develop and theme custom ROMS, and wanted to learn disxda’s kitchen while at the same time hopefully giving back however I can to such an awesome community.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for YOU messing up your phone. Flash at your own risk
This is built from the SPH-D710BST_GC01_1014517_Rooted_Restore.tar.md5 http:///www.rwilco12.com/downloads.php?dir=Files/Devices/Samsung%20Galaxy%20S2%20%28Boost%29%20%28SPH-D710BST%29/Stock%20ROMs/JB/GC01/Full%20Restore/Rooted
This may be used as a base for ROM developers. All I ask for is credit for taking the time to put this together.
This DOES NOT wipe the internal storage.
This DOES not include a custom kernel, and you WILL lose custom kernel/recovery when you flash. However, I have posted a link to Garywnn’s OP, with his permission, of course, which has the latest and greatest GC01 SPH-D710BST kernels with Agat’s recovery. Version 3.0 is the latest as of this post, and I have confirmed that it works with this ROM, as is it what I’m using with it at the moment.
This DOES NOT wipe the data partition.
ROM has been tested on Boost and Sprint (Thanks Stryke_the_Orc and MoHoGalore). If anyone wants to take a chance and see if it works on Virgin, it’d be much appreciated. Let me know if it works!

3. Wipe cache/dalvik(Good habit) – If you want to wipe everything, use JB Format x2
4. Flash Modem (If needed. You need JB Modem to have data)
5. Select install zip from sdcard
6. Select choose zip from sdcard if your zip file is on the external sdcard or select choose zip from internal sdcard if you downloaded the zip right to your phone
7. Select the zip. If you downloaded directly to your phone it is in the Download folder. Otherwise, it is wherever you put it
8. Select Yes
9. Wait a moment while it installs
10. Reboot, give it a few minutes to boot up for the first time
11. Enjoy!

Outstanding. Gives me something towards which to strive, measured way into the future, of course.
Wish I had a Boost device so I could try it.

Okay, now you've done it. I'm going to do a nand of my current and flash this mofo. Looks on the surface to be my dream ROM. Debloated and unthemed, so I can tinker. I'll have a flawless ROM to which I can always return (Jellyverse, thanks SG), and plug in my launcher of choice (ssLauncher, Nova Prime), widgets (Eye on the Sky, Zooper, UCCW), and other apps, and have at it. (Check out John Nada's work over at My Color Screen, for instance.)
That stated, it looks like my set-it-and-forget-it contentment was but vapor.
How dare you sir!
Thanks. Will post screenies when I've made some progress.

Hi, JD:
Thank you sir! Very nice indeed, free RAM looks good, running smoothly.
Got my MSL the old fashioned way, by calling Sprint from my handset and playing stupid "(the guy at the store told me before I left last night that I'd have it on my paperwork...well, I can't find my paperwork..."), gal gave it to me instantly, checked that it worked before I started, then installed. Did a full wipe, by the way, including user data. Then changed my MMSC URL, and moved to the next stage.
I have installed Mobile Odin Pro from the App market, and reinstalled Titanium Backup Pro, and getting back in business with custom recovery, my contacts, my call and MMS/SMS logs, &c.
Before I continue onto theming, quick questions: Can I flash TD's AIO 3.5 Deodoxed? Secondly, can I go to bilgerryan's incredible collation of apps and flash what looks intriguing (making sure, of course, that they are zips and deodoxed)? I'd like to kill the Boost logo, for instance.
Thanks again for all of your help!
Best,
Mike

Smooth. No tweaks...just stock ROM that's been optimized and a few tmobile apps gone. A good Base Stock ROM. Only thing is that in the Video app...only 2 of my 22 videos are animated. This happened on another ROM...but works perfectly on stock Samsung.
If you're looking for a STock ROM that's smooth with no CIQ. This is it.

This bring back great memories with the ownership of the Vibrant.
With this new phone, the learning begins all over again, this time around I am a bit wiser to the phones hardware and to the rom's capabilities. Now this will enable Developers, Themers & Kernel cookers to explore their development skills and to take a stab a themes.
Now I have to spend time with this phone and identify the bloatware and look for the right tool to remove them.
Thanks again oka1
Excellent Rom
I love this Rom - to me it is the best out there. Everything works fine. It's plenty fast with a stock kernel, no quirks from what I've seen. I've tried CM9 and other roms which are good, but this is a good base Rom.

[FIX] Dual Core always appears to be on OR off, governors default to performance.

Maybe some of you on custom ROMs have noticed that your second core functions strange, which would also mean terrible battery life and abnormally hot phones.
Well, this is due to something causing the cores to switch governors to "performance" upon boot. The only way to fix it is from a script or other app that controls CPU. That's not all. The second core seems to not function according to specs. It will either always stay on, or always stay off. mpdecision doesn't appear to work properly.
Well, I've narrowed this down to "samsungani" and "samsungpowersound" which are located in /system/bin/. Removing these at an attempt to get custom boot animations working and to get rid of boot sounds are what's causing the funky core behaviors.
The fix is to restore the two files and chmod them 755 as well as chgrp to 2000 to get them back to the way they're supposed to be.
I'm not sure if any of this effects custom kernels but it sure does on the Stock kernel.
The file I uploaded will restore the samsungani and samsungpowersoundplay files to /system/bin/ as well as copy over silent PowerOn and PowerOff sounds.
Wow that's awesome that you figured this out. Great job!!

Does this do anything to the cpusleeper app (eugene)? Not the script, but the actual app for those who have it installed? Will the zip you provide defeat the need for the app? Thanks for any additional info!

Nah, the zip will only be adding those files back to /system//bin/ if they were removed, like in order to get support for custom boot animations.

Do we need to flash this after we flash a rom obviously your rom will have the fix so I'm not worried about it but for others who arent using your rom.
Edit: is there any way I can test to insure both cores are doing what they are supposed to be doing like an app per say

Well, it really only will matter if your current ROM includes a different boot animation and/or removes those files. In any other case, it will do nothing.

OK thanks again love the rom I know you get asked this a lot but if you ever need a tester let me know I use to test for mijuah but my son stole my s2 so I'm bored now lol.
Zip applied, and I had to duplicate the process to confirm what I thought I saw:
Been running blazer 1.6 for a few days now and I honestly don't know what (if any) boot animations are built into that rom, but in the spirit of testing (and flash addiction) I used this zip.
This is what I noticed (and duplicated to confirm)--
Chainfire's live dmesg/logcat (I used paid versions) were replaced by this zip file.
When I "reinstalled" the first attempt found no boot animation files. I attempted install again and this time it did indeed "repair" the logcat/dmesg boot screen.
This is my first dual core so I have no experience in these apps working or not on such phones.
If this is wide spread then perhaps chainfire might want to look into an update to his code, if this is specific to the sgs3 then maybe we have deeper issues to delve into.
Sprint...LF9...Blazer1.6...no other customizations

[HOW TO][EASY] ODEX your rom, make your phone faster!

As some of you may know, odexed roms offer better battery life and superior performance compared to deodexed roms, but the one drawback is that they're harder to mod. I was looking for a odexed rom (coming from the HTC One X, almost all stock roms were odexed, so I expected the same, lol) but couldn't find a single one. So I went on a search to find a script or something to odex the rom I was using, and I came across this!
"Odex Me" by Paulobrien! Here's the link to the original thread, all credit goes to him! :good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1215271
Now here's where my part comes in, my step-by-step guide!
This will work on ANY DEODEXED ROM, I'm compiling a list of confirmed ones however for you guys that are weary of this.
*Use this only AFTER you've made any changes to the framework or flashed .zips that change the framework.*
First and foremost, make a backup! You should always do this before messing with system files!
1) Make sure you have a rooted rom, without root the app won't do much but install.
2) Allow "Unknown sources" by going into Settings > Security > and scroll down.
3) Download the .apk either down below, or from the link above.
4) Install as a normal app.
5) Open the app, make sure you give it root access, and it will run.
6) Let it run, it will reboot your phone, take around 5-10 minutes, and then reboot again. You will be greeted by "Android is upgrading" which means its rebuilding your dalvik cache.
7) Once its at the lock screen, done! You can make sure it did its job by using a file explorer with root access (I use Root Browser, if that helps) and go to the root of your phone's memory, go to system > app, and you should see a bunch of "appnamehere".odex files.
You will see a noticeable increase in performance with all the system apps like Messaging, Phone, Browser, etc. And because all the base apps are now odexed, you will also see an increase in battery life as well.
List of ROMs confirmed working
FreeGS3 R6 (confirmed by me, using it currently)
Intrigue ROM
Crimson v4
Wicked v2 (confirmed by as well, check post #48 for screen shots)
Let me know if you think there's a way to make the guide more clear, or add some information in. I will also try and answer all questions you may have! Enjoy this, its truly amazing!
If you're having issues with it not odexing on ANY rom, try using the Trinity kernel. I've tested every rom with Morfic's kernel and it works flawlessly. Don't forget to thank him for his work! :good:
Trinity Kernel, use the latest #46 release for best results and speed.
Please, if it worked for you, let us know what rom you're running so others can be assured that it works!
Here are some sources that explain the benefits of odexing in more technical and specific terms.

Rootandandroid short article on odexing

Because it splits the .apk (app package) into two parts, the .apk and a .odex file. Usually, for the phone to use an app, it has to decompile the .apk and get the parts it needs to run the app. With the odex files, which stands for "Optimized Dex" the startup time is much faster since the phone doesn't have to perform any optimizing at startup/runtime, and because of that, it also uses less CPU power, and thus makes it faster, smoother, and battery life is increased.

Well after flashing a deodex rom (all the roms here) and any add ons, running this to make the phone faster and increase battery life is nothing short of amazing. Don't have to compromise over customization, or performance.
And yeah, its because of the One X that I realized the benefits lol
I personally prefer odexed roms as well because of the overall smoothness. But I really wanted the features of some custom Roms. This app is perfect...thank you for sharing!

Didn't work how? Be more specific.
It did everything but when you go exploring with a root browser, you don't see any odex files? Or it didn't even reboot? We need more man.

How long did it take to reboot? The process should take around 5-10 minutes. Try uninstalling the app, reinstalling, and running it again.

[GUIDE] How to port ROMs

This guide is going to show you how to port ROMs to our Sprint GS3!
Before we begin, please download the programs 7zip and Notepad++ as we will need them. And get a Stock JB ROM for our Device(Preferably DeOdexed)
So lets get started!!!
1) Download the ROM you want to port
2) Open it using 7zip
3) Replace the kernel/boot.img with ours
4) Go to /system/lib/modules. Delete everything and replace with ours
5) then go to /system/lib/hw. Delete and replace everything with ours
6) For the Hard keys and soft keys to work go to /system/usr/keychars and delete and replace then go to /system/usr/keylayout and delete and replace with ours
7) Now go to /system/etc and delete the following and replace with ours:
- vold.fstab
- /wifi
- /ppp
Congrats! You have ported your first ROM! But please do the devs, and myself a favor and don't spam the Development Subforum with ports!
At the risk of sounding stupid.... is it really this easy???... LOL

I'm thinking the same thing. If so, somebody should start a single thread (idk which section) that houses all of these types of ports. This just sounds too simple to work though.
I believe that there is a program that allows you to link a rom to port with a rom from your device.. It processes it.. And spits out a supposed, ported rom. I don't remember where I read it. Maybe this is the manual method... But, I agree.. It sounds too easy

Yes, it's that easy. But porting,to me, is like the simplest form of creating a custom ROM. Next is theming and modding, then comes building from source.
Nonetheless, hopefully this motivates some people to get their hands dirty with some work

This is good for cm based roms or roms for same device but separate carriers (sprint, Verizon, etc.) But for most others it would take much more. Just have fun and don't go trying to port htc sense right away lol If you're lucky you won't have to edit framework or anything
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
If we did this would we be able to you the mods/morphs that the ROM comes with? This sounds cool and all but Sprint I believe and I could be wrong are the only one with JB Final others are leaks. Don't want to go down that road again.

I did all of this just as you said, in attempting to port an AT&T gs3 rom to my Sprint gs3. It gave me an error when I tried to flash it in CWM. I think it was error code 6? Any idea what I did wrong?

I tried porting the gnote 2 sprint rom to my gs3 but I keep getting a status 1 error in cwm. I guess its not that easy. But I did notice that there wasnt a modules folder in the gnote 2 rom that I downloaded but I still added it in there. Any thoughts??

I guess the OP forgot to mention this would only work with ROMs similar to our phones, for example, other GS3 variants. The Note 2 has an Exynos chip, not a snapdragon S4 like ours, so porting will require a bit more effort than what the OP stated.

[WIP][ROM][PORT][4.2.2]v2.9b Avatar ROM for Epic 4g Touch

Background:
PLEASE READ!!
I saw a request in Q&A asking if this ROM was going to be ported to our phone. So I thought what the heck, I’ll give it a go. I did not build the base, or the port, for this ROM. I simply followed very detailed directions on how to port(see link) and got a working Avatar ROM ported for the E4GT. With that being said, the reason it’s a WIP is because there are still a few bugs that need to be worked out. With the help of Stryke_the_Orc, I have tried and tried, to no avail, to figure out how to get the few bugs left sorted out. My desire is to post this as well as the steps I’ve taken thus far, and open the floor up for discussion, troubleshooting, and hopefully, through open collaboration and teamwork, we can get a fully functioning ROM up and running. Before you attempt to flash this ROM, please read the known issues section. It will save you a lot of heartache. Thanks!!
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for YOU messing up your phone. Flash at your own risk
Thanks:
If I missed anyone, please, please, let me know and I'll get you added to the list. I 100% believe in giving credit where credit is due.
Google – For obvious reasons
XDA – For this amazing site, and the phenomenal job you all do at maintaining it.
dastin1015 – For allowing me to use his CM 10.1 “Wild For The Night” ROM, as the base http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2099881
bippi79 and the rest of Team Avatar – For permission to port this to the E4GT http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060731
rishabh.raj37 – For putting together the very detailed tutorial used to build this port http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908008
chris41g and TheMuppets – For the proprietary SPH-D710 apks https://github.com/TheMuppets/proprietary_vendor_samsung/tree/cm-10.1/d710/proprietary
Stryke_the_Orc – For everything----I think that about covers it

Installation Instructions
Taken from CM 10.1 Wild for the Night(since it’s the base)
• Do NOT use a JB modem
• Flash a safe recovery (if required)
• Flash an ICS modem (if required)
• Wipe everything except sdcards if coming from any ROM except CM10
• Wipe cache and dalvik-cache and after boot wipe data on clock if flashing new version from previous installation of CM10
• Wipe cache and dalvik-cache if flashing new version from previous installation of CM10.1
• Flash ROM
• Flash GAPPS (if new installation or coming from CM10)
• Reboot
Note - I did not include the instructions to change kernel governor and change back, because I did not do this for testing purposes. From what I’ve read, this helps with fixing any Bluetooth issues, but again, I did not do this step.
Known Issues:
Text/MMS not working. I am on Boost Mobile. This could be an APN issue, but I have tried changing everything but the MNC(apn resets if I try to change this), and still doesn’t work. Has not been tested on Sprint. Would appreciate someone taking a shot at this on Sprint, since this is based on Sprint CM. I have also replaced the Port MMS.apk with the Base MMS.apk, to no avail.
4g not working – This is the biggie. I have left everything wimax-related from the base intact. As you tinker with it, you’ll see that original Avatar Rom doesn’t have wimax (none of the builds do that I’ve found). So the wimax jar is still in framework. All the wimax apps are still in system apps(as well as the other proprietary apks) All the wimax-related lib files are still in the library. The only lib files that I ported over from Avatar are the ones listed in the tutorial to get out of bootloop (which happened the first time). Every subsequent build where I brought over the entire lib folder resulted in the loss of the ability to get a modem to stick.
The only steps that I have done differently from the tutorial in the porting process are:
1. Left wimax apps in place in the system apps folder(and proprietary apps added)
2. Left wimax jar in framework

Update - I was just cruising the Avatar Rom website, and saw there is a new build for the i9100, that just came out today. Actually, there are a few builds that have been released since I built this port. I do not think, however, that the new builds include wimax, so until then, I will stick with v2.9b. Thanks!

I would like to make some room, lots of it, on my internal SD. Actually, I would like to kill most of contents prior to flashing (folders left behind from apps long ago installed, etc). I've backed up everything I need onto both my PC and my external SD.
What is the swiftest route to doing that prior to testing your ROM? Again, I have no problem at all with killing everything but the minimal content needed on my internal SD card.
Thanks for your input prior to starting.
