Review of iOttie Easy One Touch car mount holder w/lots of pics!!! - General Accessories

This is a review of iOttie Easy One Touch car mount holder for Note 2: http://www.iottie.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=1008&ProductType=321
When a company puts "easy one touch" in their product description, you know they mean business I went through a number of different car mounts in the last few months and this is the first one which allows a very easy one hand operation. I don't look for fancy car mounts with power cradles or already attached cables limiting my setup. I need flexibility of universal grip mount where I can manage where and how I attach my micro-usb power cable without a need of taking a case off my phone to fit into the holder. There is a few other car mounts available in this category, but what I found is that nobody delivered it to perfection like iOttie car mount.
Starting with suction pad, you get a very strong gel base adhesive material and the pad itself made out of thick and durable silicone. The suction cup is actually labeled as "super suction cup", and trust me - it will stick to anything like a cement glue. But at the same time, with some force it will be easy to remove, doesn't leave any residue, and after rinsing under the water it's like brand new. There were no issues sticking to a textured dashboard in my car. As a matter of fact, this is the only mount I was able to stick to a vertical textured area above glove box door in my car - totally insane!!! And just to prove that it can stick to any surface and be removed without damaging it, I also used it at home in a kitchen mounted to the top and upside down, as well as vertically mounted to my painted wall and the door. In every case it stuck dead on, and after removing (did require some force) it came off clean without leaving any residue or damaging the surface. Something to think about if you are planning to use it in the house as well. Arm connecting the mounting base to the actual holder has multiple adjustment knobs for different angles and full 360 degree rotation. All the knobs are easily accessible and very comfortable to adjust with fingers and doesn't require any additional tools. My only comment is that I wish it would have a universal ball joint connection as an option to be compatible with other mounts, although I'm not sure if its even necessary considering how capable this mount already is.
Now to the holder itself. It's as simple as it can get, yet brilliantly executed to work with one hand. You just push on two side bars to open both extendable arms which pops up a trigger button in the middle, and place your phone inside which pushes on the trigger button to securely lock the arms. That's all! Both arms and a trigger button have soft lining, no worries about scratching your phone or the case. And also you have an adjustable extension shelf for an additional support to find a better position for your phone placement relative to holder where side arms doesn't interfere with power/volume buttons. Everything is made out of durable plastic material. Also, I have to mention that both the packaging box and iOttie website have a very detailed installation/operation instructions.
This mount does exactly what it says - it's easy and it's one touch. Also it's a bargain for under $20 on Amazon, where it's actually #1 selling car mount.
Here are the pictures taken both at home and in the car. I still get a kick out of the one mounted vertically above my glove compartment

I enjoy the iOttie as well for my car dock needs. The only knock on it, and it's more for selected people, you can only use it with the OEM/slim battery and a slim case, such as yours or TPU case. It's not Defender friendly.
The only dock I think may compete with it is the Clingo you see on TV. But that dock may not work well with cases that are silicon based such as TPUs. But the Clingo Neklit works pretty well with my Cruzerlite TPU case.

does it come with any audio/power cableing, or is it just a mount?
thanks!

I can attest to the strength of the suction cup. It's the most insane one I've ever seen. Even when you don't pull down the locking tab, the suction cup holds so securely I had to literally peel it off the glass on the windshield. I've mounted it on the dash as well and if I pulled hard enough I think I would've cracked the dashboard.
The mount is great and there is only one thing I don't like about it, the locking screw for the actual phone clamp part is very sensitive. If you do not tighten it enough, it will slip and the phone will turn, but if you tighten it only a tad more, it won't move at all for adjustments. There is little margin for flexibility in the mount tightening.
Other than that it's great for the Note2.

Just a mount, I pictured whatever is included in the box. These are typically universal mounts, leaving flexibility to connect whatever else you want afterwards.

I don't recall any cables being included. Really 2.0A car charges are cheap, and you got a USB cable with the phone or you can pick one up one the cheap as well. The charger is open enough that you can use pretty much what you like to attach USB or 3.5mm wise.

Just ordered this as well. I liked the fact that suction can stick virtually anywhere. I'm tired of just putting my phone in my cup holder, even though I don't use my navigation too much I think I might now lol.

Do you know of a good car mount that will work with the Otterbox Defender case?

It comes with one! Well, after a little modification....

Anyone out there who's had this for more than a few weeks care to comment on durability? I'm seeing some reviews on Amazon saying that the joints get weak very quickly and start to sag; any truth to that?

I've been using this mount for a couple months and it is excellent. The suction cup is the strongest I've ever seen.

I'll post some
pic's in a new thread with the mount and my phone.

Ok I had this ordered back in Jan. But after I got back from CES show in Vegas. I got my hands on the mount I posted above!!:thumbup:
But I will say I did try it b4 it got returned to Amazon 1 week. #1 strong suction hand down! #2 Will stick anywhere, because the back is made of the same material as the lil sticky pads we use to, use on the dash! #3 Went from one case too another, it stopped working as it was. Because the new case was a lil thicker! So it kept popping out, cuz of the small handles on the sides! :banghead:
# durability is so so. It'll hold up for sometime for you?? Pending on use!

Yes it it strong but, but when it wares out after moving it so much it'll just b like a regular suction. They say rinse it off, but I've had that type of material b4! Fyi
Side note: please PLEASE, keep in mind if you leave it on your dash it WILL leave a permanent circle if used for a long extended period. The week I had it on the dash the circle is still there!!!:banghead::banghead: I'll post a pic 2morw!

I've had mine since December. I haven't noticed it sagging any more or worse than the other car docks. All of mine eventually loose grip in the ball joint. So, from the get go, I have it where the phone sits on the dash.
I haven't noticed the ring, but mine has been on the dash for months. I use it almost everyday.

There are many car mounts I have used, compared vent mount, dashboard mount and windshield mount, I prefer dashboard mount. The 360 degree design adjust my phone or other device until can clearly fit the screen, aLLreLi car mount is I'm using now. It's useful and flexible.

DIY custom car dock for the Galaxy S3

So after getting my new S3 a couple weeks ago I decided I wanted a dock for my truck to be able use navigation, music, etc a little more conveniently….
I was really surprised to find out that Samsung has not made an S3 specific dock yet….
After doing some searching, I found a thread here that showed the Infuse 4G car dock worked (thanks ookba!), so I picked one up from ATT last week to play with.
While it does what I want, I couldn’t use it with my Aduro shell holster case as it does not come off easily. In addition, I couldn’t mount the dock where I wanted in my truck.
So I decided to make my own dock and mount; hopefully someone here can benefit from this. This won't win any beauty awards, but it works.
The materials I used are as follows:
1/8” black Kydex (McMaster-Carr PN 8650K112)
Cannibalized Infuse 4G dock

Pro-Fit Toyota specific VSM G3 mount – This was sort of a mistake; I didn’t look closely enough where the mount was intended to be installed into my Tundra. The mount was made to be installed on the passenger side of the radio which is way too far away for me. So I ended up using the parts, but as the kit was $50, I probably could’ve done it cheaper if I was paying attention.
1/8 x 1.5 x 6” aluminum strip (Home Depot)
In addition, So I did not melt my expensive S3, I needed to make a replacement that I could use to form the Kydex with, once I heated it up; For that I used the Incipio case that I had first bought, but didn’t really like.
I also got some polyester casting resin and activator from an art supply house to make the form.
(Black electrical tape placed over openings to keep resin from leaking out)
After about 24 hours I had a "new" GS3! This picture shows the new resin S3 in the Incipio case...
Out of the mold. Note that the textured side of the Kydex is what contacts the phone; it almost feels soft.
Next I needed to fit the USB portion of the Infuse dock onto my cradle; In order for my S3 to slide onto the USB port, I had to mill the back of my cradle until the phone slid onto the USB smoothly. I ended up taking off nearly 1/16” from the back.
Once that was done, I cut out the center portion of the Infuse dock connector so I could fill it with epoxy and make it a bit stronger. I also had to grind down the bottom a bit to make it flat.
The scary part was actually gluing the 2 pieces to together so the USB plug lined up with the phone; For this, I had to use the actual phone and not my resin mockup…… Fortunately I did not end up gluing my phone to the dock!
Not the prettiest, but fully functional!
I did polish up the edges so they were smooth with my Dremel.
Here is the dock with the Pro-Fit Lock Plate (PN BR202-LP) secured to the back. You can also see that I molded the top of the cradle over an Exacto knife handle as a retainer for the phone.
With phone
I may cut off the tab at the top, as the phone fits in nice and snug by itself, so I don’t think it is in any danger of falling out. We’ll see…
Next, I need a mount!
I hammered on a 6” strip of 1/8” aluminum to make my mount. You can see the Tundra Pro-fit mount below it… More on that later…
Here is the mount sitting on my dash
This was an experiment, but I decided to try using some Command wall strips to secure the mount to the dash.
Command strips installed, Pro-fit mount bolted onto the end.
Mount “secured “ to the dash….
This is the mount temporarily secured where I wanted it with the owners manual as ballast.
So how did it work? It worked pretty well actually, with just a couple issues: The mount vibrated around a bit too much while driving and was a little too close to the steering wheel; however the dock itself worked well. I will probably mod the mount to stiffen it up.
Very creative !

As far as using Command strips for adhesive.... lets say that was a waste of cash!
I parked in the sun for a couple hours and the mount dropped right off... i measured almost 180 degrees on my dash with my IR thermometer.
I'll just try some heavy duty double sided tape next.... I was hoping to get something that could be removed relatively easily.
Do you by any chance have a power drill I could borrow??? lol
Nice work! i would have ruined the case, cut off a finger or drilled through my phone if I attempted something like that!

I've used thos strips as well and they do not hold up in the heat. What I've found to work is using 3M outdoor mounting tape. It holds up to the hot Phoenix weather. Nice Tundra by the way :good:

UPDATE
Sooo, I did discover the downside of using Kydex.... I originally selected Kydex as my material due to its relatively low "heat forming" point...(~150)..
I am in Denver this week for work, so I brought my dock with me to use in my rental car; this afternoon I left work and when i put the phone in the dock I found one of the "wings" that holds the phone had opened up a bit.
It was 95 degrees out and I know from my measurements in my truck back home, that I was seeing 175 degrees (measured on the dash with IR)
Judging by how hot the steering wheel was, I'm guessing the interior heated up close enough to the forming temperature of Kydex that it softened up a bit..
This isn't a huge deal for me as I can just remove the dock from the mount when I'm not in the car and set it aside out of the sun.
I would like to get a material that will be more heat resistant though, which means that it will require more heat to form, which in turn means that my current resin mold won't cut it....
Looks like I will have to get some heat resistant silicon and make a mold that I can pour a liquid metal into to make a heat resistant form.
Stay tuned!
In response to previous request about how I secured the Infuse dock to my cradle; here is some additional details...
If you have the Infuse dock, this is the part that slides to insert the USB connector into the phone; I simply removed it from the dock it self. On the rear is a thin piece of plastic that just pulls out; under that you will see 4 small philips screws. Those are what holds this piece to the rest of the dock.
Once I had the screws out, I cut out the center portion so I could fill the cavity with epoxy. My original plan was to fill with epoxy to strengthen it, let harden and then secure it to my cradle with screws. I ended up just using the epoxy to secure it, so probably didn't need to fill it, but no big deal, either way would work.
THis is a close up of the back of my cradle (i think this picture was also in the original post) I took my dremel and with a sanding drum I carefully sanded out an area so the dock would fit correctly.
I spent quite a bit of time lining up the dock with my phone and sanding until it fit correctly
Here is the dock epoxied to the cradle

Imagnet magnetic car mount

This is a magnetic phone holder. Ive ordered two of these and will post pics/video when they arrive. Looks like a great product.
I also talked to John from the company and suggested they build in qi charging capabilities!
This is on sale for $19.99 and free shipping.

The mount showed up yesterday and is awesome!
I will post a video as soon as i have time. Its still very busy at work from Hurricane Sandy!
I am using this with my UAG case and it works great. NFC works too. Qi test to follow when i get my receiver from China.
There is a small metal disc that sits between your case and phone. Its round and smaller than a half dollar. Thickness is very thin. Its just a hair more than 4 sheets of copier paper. Its much thinner than i thought it would be.
There are also two additional metal discs that have 3m tape on them you can use for other devices. These are the same thickness but are retecangular. Im guessing they are about 2" x 2.5".
The mount has a super sticky suction cup on the bottom. On top where you place your phone, it is soft and flat. This top piece has a ball mount on it so you can swivel it.
See pic below showing the trimmed down rectangular one to fit in the groove of my uag case.
This is a steal at $19.99! Order now before the sale is over!
Update with short video on cinder block wall! Show me another mount that works like this!!!!

This is very nice, I wonder if I can slip that metal between my hyperion batt and seidio cover, not sure if there is enough room.
Its pretty thin. I was able to slip it in between my blackberry cover and battery. I cut it with a good pair of electrician scissors. It's like a thin piece of sheetmetal and is flexible. Try 5 sheets of cut paper, not folded. If that works, you wont have a problem cause its a little thinner than 5 sheets.
Thanks I will def try it and get it if it fits, thx again
just a caution depending on how you place etc.. this may break NFC

I am using one with hyperion battery, the round metal sheet fits between the door and the battery, but yes it breaks my nfc, no big deal i don't use it anyway.
How well does this hold up with bumpy roads, I live in Michigan pot hole season is coming also does the charge cord drag the phone down. It looks really cool.
If you put the disc right over the battery, it will hinder nfc. If you move it down a little, nfc works as normal.
Bumps have no effect. I used it in my work van all day today and it never fell off. Also, the cord does not drag it down or spin it in horizontal mode.
Awesome thanks for the reply
dumb question i know, but how does this affect the phone? I mean with such a strong magnet. I know the old "dumb" phones don't always play nice with magnets but what about the newer phones
The magnet is in the mount. The piece in the phone is metal. I havent noticed any problems so far.

well, it depends on what you mean by "compass". while using navigation, it doesn't at all (because that is dictated by your movement.) IF you are using the magnetic compass in the phone.. you are always going south. even Ulysses speedometer reads fine (my favorite "car mode" app.)
I just bought the iOttie. Haven't received it yet, but it got TONS of great reviews. Amazon. Check it out on YouTube.
(⊙_⊙)
I had an iottie universal mount (not the one touch) that lasted a week. The suction cup part broke and the suction cup came detached. It was flimsy junk.
Having used both, there is no comparison. The iotte (even the one touch) has a basic clear 25 cent suction cup on it. The imagnet one is super sticky black material. I just dont see an advantage to a clamping style mount versus a magnetic. There is no way i could EVER use a clamp style mount again!
The imagnet suction cup has a patent!
Updated 2nd post with short video.
I have found that the iMagnet stand works quite well with the magnets from the Touchstone mod. I also bought a Khomo rubberized back plate to increase the friction so it doesn't slide. It doesn't work particularly well with a case but is pretty stable otherwise. I've driven around for a couple of days now and my phone hasn't budged. My grand plan is to affix an NFC chip to the iMagnet so that I can just set my phone on it and all of my settings will revert to car mode.

That is what is holding me off from buying one of these mounts.

Nfc is not an issue with the metal plate. I will try the magnets later tonight but im guessing it wont be a problem as noted in the touchstone threads.
Case wise, it works great with the round metal plate in both the uag case and incipio silicrylic case.

I don't believe that the NFC should be a problem. I have tried NFC with my Nexus 7 and the Touchstone mod doesn't affect it. Since the NFC chip will sit above the iMagnet base it shouldn't interfere. I think the key is keeping the metal plate/magnets in the bottom half of the phone since the NFC is located at the top of the battery. Once I get everything rigged I will try to upload pictures to better explain.
Also just to be clear I am not using the metal plate from the iMagnet kit and am only relying on the magnets from the Touchstone mod to hold it to the iMagnet base.

ExoGear ExoMount 2 review with lots of pics!!!

This is a review of ExoGear ExoMount 2 Car Mount holder, http://www.exogear.com/products-exomount2-car-mount-holder.html
With so many reviews I already posted in this forum, this is a first time I'm going to use "sexy" to describe the product!!! Yes, indeed. But then you be a judge of that while looking at the pictures below! The concept of this car mount is very unique and totally different from other bracket wise-grip style products. Its a grip in a shape of a clip that can easily hold any smart phone including our Note 2 phablet. The clip is attached to a base with universal ball joint which allows rotation in every direction to position your phone in portrait or landscape or any other angle in between, including a wide tilt angle. The material is of an exception quality, made out of a strong reinforced polycarbonate. Combined with a polyurethane grip and reinforced springs, this is one solid piece of car mount which you can leave on your dashboard without worrying of melting under the sun I actually took the clip portion off in one of the pictures below just so you can see details of ball joint connection. A lot of engineering thought vent into this where its not just a typical plastic sphere but actually a special design with a rubber ring in the middle. This will enable rotation without loosening up the joint connection. I mean, this is just a common universal ball joint connection used in most of the car mount and gps mount devices, but in this case it was re-engineered to improve it. Also, a very common problem with other devices where a joint pin can pop out has been addressed with this car mount where the clip pin has 2 round stoppers on each side to keep it from sliding.
But one of the most impressive details of this car mount is it's suction cup base. Soon enough car mount accessory manufacturers started to realize that people want to have an option to attach their car mount not just to the glass or permanently stuck disk on the dashboard. That's when we start seeing introduction of the gel-base suction cups which allow mounting on any textured surface such as most of the modern car dashboards. I have seen and tested a number of different gel-base suction mounts, and found this one to be one of the best!!! Its a combination of gel donut which attaches to any surface and smooth rubber inner part to pull the air out - very clean and nicely executed. Once you attach it, it sticks to any surface in either horizontal, vertical, or upside down position. I have tested and included pictures of it attached to a painted wall, a wooden door, and upside down to the kitchen island counter. Once removed, it leaves no marks, don't even need to wipe anything. And the stickiness of gel is rejuvenated once you rinse it under the water. Basically, you can use it not just in a car, but also at home.
Now, here is something I want to bring up as well. It was already mentioned in this forum about similar looking knock off product you can find elsewhere and as I matter of fact I tested one of those. Let me tell you, it doesn't even come close to this original!!! Every detail of ExoMount 2 from quality of material, to ball joint, spring mount, suction cup, etc. is by far superior in this original product. And considering this is 2nd generation of the mount, Exogear continues to work on improvements. Also, it's awesome they're offering this mount in both black and white, and as you can see it looks great with white Note 2. I think that really makes it stand out when on your dashboard, and nobody going to mistaken this for just another cheap gps stand. Also, by unique nature of the clip, it will allow you to use your phone as a dash-mounted camera without any obstruction. Also, you have a freedom to use ANY case with your phone without taking it off and flexibility of bringing in micro-usb cable from any side.
Overall I'm very impressed with Design and Quality of this product, and can definitely recommend it!!!
Here are the pictures I took around the house and in the car to show you more details:

Nice review - I've got the Exomount 2 in black. Very happy with it ... except for the price point.
Got buyers remorse when I later discovered the 'clipper car mount' on ebay for as low as $5/ea ... and it's the exact same thing! I then also got a clipper off ebay for 4.95 ... but now suddenly they've jacked up the price to $34.95. But a coupon for wowparts was included with package so I'm assuming this is the actual non-ebay store. http://www.wowparts.com/universal-car-mount-holder-for-galaxy-s4-i9500-i9300-iphone-5/
I can post pics of the clipper for comparison if you'd like.
I have had the Exomount 1 in black for a couple of years. I've had the Exomount 2 in white for about 8 months now. Love the ExoGear products! By far the best car mount available! The Exomount 1 has been with me though 3 phones now, and the Exomount 2 through 2 phones. I love that it's so easily adjusted, and will work with a variety of products!

I have both, the exo gear and the generic one from e bay.. The only difference is the exo gear can stick to any surface.. But they both make the phone wobble around like crazy

Does Exomount 2 wobble? Is the phone steady when the car is moving?

I would not recommend using it with Zerolemon. Too heavy and too thick to be mounted in that setup on a suction cup.
It wobbles all the time.. It holds it nice and I would buy it again because anything fits in it.. But it does wobble side to side.. Sometimes not to bad other times.. Wtf.. Is tolerable but annoying too..

Thank you guys for the input.

If mounted correctly to your dash or windshield, the phone and mount will NOT WOBBLE at all! There's an adjustable piece on the back of the mount that allows you to adjust the viewing angle. Once adjusted to the proper viewing angle, tighten that piece back up and the mount will NOT move at all, much less wobble or bounce! Mine never moves, even when going 70-80mph down the road

I have mine tighten as tight as physically possible. And I'm a big strong guy.. And it still wobbles.. I've tried all different positions and everything.. I even added a drop of super glue on the mount and arm attachment. It wobbles..

My exo mount 1 wobbled too. The neck design is just a bit thin, seems they have carried that design choice over to the new one aswell. Great review btw.

I think there was some improvements with ExoMount 2. But what I'm referring to in my last comment was about it's compatibility with Note 2 and Zerolemon 9300mAh battery. It doubles the weight of the phone and it's thickness. No matter how tight you are going to secure the mount, it will eventually get loose. Note 2 by itself is at the limit of ExoMount 2 "universal" fitment. Doubling the weight and thickness puts extra stress on the joint/mount. As a matter of fact, I found the spring of the clip of those $3 ebay knockoffs to be stronger and to hold the phone better. I personally switched back to my old Arkon mega-grip now. Next week I have iBolt coming my way for review and have some high hopes for it.
I think I would avoid Exomount 1 and 2 since the grip looks the same.
There are complains that the grip of Exomount 1 will break easily at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2103947 and comments in http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=SG&v=ZED_ZzjXTUU&hl=en-GB

Review of ExoGear ExoMount Touch and Touch CD w/lots of pics!!!

This is a review of ExoGear ExoMount Touch and Touch CD. http://www.exogear.com/products-exomount-touch-one-touch-car-mount-holder.html and http://www.exogear.com/products-exomount-touch-cd-slot-mount.html
I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with ExoMount clip mount. Well, they are back with a new one-touch mounting grip designed to accommodate any smartphone with a display size of 3.5" to 5.8", which as you can imagine covers everything from original iPhone to Note 3. Since I was just recently reviewing UAG case for Note 3, I figure to put it to the test with ExoMount Touch system.
Just like any car mounting system, you have two basic parts with a grip to hold the phone and the base to attach to a surface. The grip has very minimalistic yet sturdy design. You squeeze the release buttons in the back to open up a non-slip rubber grip and place your phone inside which triggers one-touch mounting button (in a shape of red X) that locks the grip. Very easy, very robust, and universal for any phone inside of the case as long as it doesn't exceed a maximum allowable width of about 84mm and 14mm in depth. Now, these numbers are VERY important. I know the product can accommodate a phone up to 5.8" in diagonal display which is Note 3, but the most important thing is to make sure it will not exceed width/depth dimensions. For example, UAG case for my Note 2 is a few millimeters longer and deeper then Note 3 UAG, and unfortunately I wasn't able to fit my Note 2/UAG inside of this mount. With Note 3 w/UAG as you can see from the pictures below is was perfect and I'm sure it will work with any slimmer case as well. I know some people carry their Note 3 naked, they don't have to worry about these limitations. But if you are have a case and its a bulky one, make sure to measure it.
With grip out of the way, the 2nd parts is a mount. Here ExoGear offers 2 options. One is your traditional gel-base suction cup which can be attached to a dashboard (even textured surface) or windshield or anywhere in the house vertically or horizontally. The sticky part of the suction cup is super strong and attaches like a cement glue! Thankfully, it has a release tab which makes it easier to peel it off. Also, typical for any similar sticky pad, you can always rinse it off under the water to clean it and to restore "suction" power. The base attaches to the grip with universal ball joint connection that allows 360 degree rotation and swivel. Also, it means either the mount part or the grip parts are interchangeable with any other mounts which support the same joint. The second base-mounting option is a CD slot mount. Some of you have probably seen this before from another vendor, but in case of ExoGear - they re-engineered the mechanism to make it more sturdier and safer when you put it inside of your CD player slot. In today's day'n'age, who even listens to CDs in the car? We have our usb sticks or smart phones, while a lot of the cars still come equipped with a standard CD/radio unit. Taking advantage of that space with Car Mount attachment is a perfect solution! The part which goes inside of the CD is soft touch rubberized and should not damage anything. Once you insert it, just tighten the lock screw and you are in business!
Overall this is a great universal mounting system to accommodate any smartphone, even as large as Note 3 with a case on. The built is very solid, the material is top notch, and it's very simple to operate with a one touch mount. Currently they are on Amazon for $24.95 shipped which is a great value as well.
Here are the pictures, a lot of them!!!

Exogear mount
Over a year ago I purchased the first generation (exomount) for my iphone 4s. It did exactly what it was made for. The only problem I had was while driving, the exomount wasn't strong enough to to hold the phone in one position.
The bottom of the mount is made of some soft silicone type of material that will get dirty, but you'll be able to wash it off with water. One thing to keep in mind, when your gonna remove the mount from any surface, take extra care in removing it. The silicone can break off little by little if you pull to hard. Overall it's not a bad mount, I personally would not buy it again.
Once again, thank you for your review.
P.S.
Great pics!
Great!
Just great and perfect for our Note 3 but i can`t find it in Romania to buy it with cash money!!!
I bought a ExoMount years ago, then bought the ExoMount 2 when it was released. I didn't buy the 2 because my original was failing in any way whatsoever, but because they offered 2 in white. I hope they'll release the ExoMount Touch on white as well! If not then I'll just stick to my ExoMount 2 and TechMatte 1-Touch mount (which functions just like the ExoMount Touch).

For anyone who has this mount, what's the diameter of the ball in the ball/socket joint of the mount? I have a Garmin-compatible 17.2mm ball already mounted on my dash and want to know if I could use the ExoMount Touch with the existing ball.

How's your Exogear Touch after several months?
Does it still stick on the dashboard?
I am asking because I bought a sticky pad ''gekko'' that was very sticky for months but then even with water washing it loosed all the grip, I wonder if the silicon base is the same quality.

Review of Arkon Mobile Grip 2 Universal smartphone car mount w/lots of pics!!!

This is a review of Arkon Mobile Grip 2 Universal Smartphone car mount. http://www.arkon.com/mobile-grip/
Smartphone car mount plays a very important role in my every day commute since I use my Note 2 as Nav. That is why I pay a very close attention to the build quality, ability to hold my phone with a rugged case, easy accessibility to a charging port and power/volume buttons, and making sure the mount will not fall off or release the phone going over rough terrain. From a list of all my reviews, you probably seen that I tested most of the popular car mounts, and I still keep coming back to Arkon Mega Grip and Slim Grip Ultra. I have been using them for years, in extreme hot and cold weather, and it never failed me. Plus I know I can count on their 2 year warranty. They are also very reasonably priced in comparison to other brand name mounts, which is also not too far away from other cheap junk on ebay. But one mount I was always curious to test from Arkon was Mobile Grip, in the past available only for smaller phone models. Finally, Arkon released Mobile Grip 2 and made it compatible even with larger display phones. This new Mobile Grip 2 will fit any phone or phablet with a case in width of 2.4"-3.6". So let's take a closer look to see my impression after testing this new car mount.
Although it arrived in a basic plastic bag packaging, in no way its a reflection of the product quality. I often make a comment about packaging where it could give an impression of a premium product or set the mood of what to expect, but in this case a reputation of a company which has been in business for 25 years speaks louder than a basic no frills packaging. In the package you will find a mobile grip 2 holder, a mounting pedestal with adjustment ring, and 80mm adhesive disk along with an alcohol cleaning pad. Mounting pedestal is designed with a multi-surface sticky suction base and an adjustable mounting arm with an universal 17mm ball joint connection. The specific model I received for my review was MG279 with a deluxe enhanced suction base which I found to be the strongest I ever tested. As you can see, I demonstrated using it on different smooth and textured surfaces, in vertical and horizontal and upside down positions. It was amazing how it got attached to any surface like a cement, and after a number of tests when I felt the sticky base was not as strong anymore - I just rinsed it under a warm water to rejuvenate it's sticky force. As a matter of fact, Arkon even included a warning with their detailed instructions to use provided sticky disk if you have a soft vinyl or fine leather dashboard surface so you don't damage it or leave a permanent imprint. Of course, sticking it to a windshield is another option, or if you visit Arkon webpage you find a dozen of other mounting options with everything from a drink cup to a seat rail or headrest and bike handle mounts.
The mounting arm has a multi-angle adjustment which is locked in place by easy grip thumb screw, and the universal ball joint connection allows 360deg rotation and compatibility with other accessories using the same joint. Of course, the star of this car mount is the new Mobile Grip 2 holder. I can tell you with certainly, it's probably one of the most minimalistic and slimmest low profile mounts I have tested. The spring loaded mechanism allows single hand operation by inserting the phone angled and pushing to extend it. The side grips are made out of rubbery material that will not scratch your phone/case, and they have flexible tips with ridges for a more secure hold. On the back where you have a connection to universal ball joint and a thread for adjustment ring, I was very pleased to see a permanently attached rubber insert. One of the problems with ball joint mount is that friction of plastic on plastic can loosen up the connection, especially under a weight of the attached phone. Here, by adding a rubber insert Arkon enhanced the grip to make it extra secure once you tighten the adjustment ring.
You can clearly see they paid attention to every single detail, and design feels very solid. One detail you simply can't miss is a little rubber stopper on the side of the mount. Once you remove it, you realize right away that you are dealing with universal 1/4" camera mount screw opening for use with most of the camera tripods. Even so I used my own for testing, you can find Arkon offering a similar design in their catalog. The screw hole is all metal, no worries about stripping a plastic thread. It worked quite well and considering very slim design of MG2 the rear camera on my phone was not obstructed and ready to be used for picture or video taking. Btw, this is also an advantage if you want to use your phone as a dashcam mounted on your dashboard.
Overall, I was VERY impressed with Arkon Mobile Grip 2, and for the price of under $20 it's one great value especially if you choose MG279 model with deluxe sticky suction mount. The versatility of its slim minimalistic design, the quality of the build, the easy of one hand operation, the ability of keep your rear camera unobstructed, and flexibility to route power cable and having all the power/volume buttons in the open puts it on my list of high recommendation. As a matter of fact, I find this Mobile Grip 2 to be equally acceptable for use in the car and at home on any surface and any room.
Here are the pictures.

That's exactly the conclusion I came up myself. If you look at the list of my reviews (sticky at the top or in my sig file), I looked every popular car mount, and this one definitely at the top of quality and usability.
Do you think this mount would hold up with an S3 with a ZeroLemon 7000mAh battery? I'm not going to be able to upgrade my phone for a few months, so I was looking for something that would work both with my S3 with extended battery, and then whatever phone I get next, probably sans extended battery.

Measure the thickness of your S3 w/ZL and let me know. I will see then if it could work.
What do you think the likelihood is that the suction mount will be sufficient on a car dash? I'd really prefer not to use adhesive.

Like a cement glue!!! That is a beautify of this gel-based sticky suction mount where it attaches even to textured surface with a strong grip.
How sturdy is it? I drive a big rig and need something that will hold my S5 without flinging it to the ground while I'm bouncing down the road.

Absolutely love this mount for my Note 3. Really holds my big phone sturdy, even when connected to a car charger. Photo attached.
Does the dashboard mount ever fall off without the optional adhesive disk? I might have to get the holder with the 4 legs as I'm using a Xperia Z3 and the magnetic charger, power button, and volume rockers are all located in the center.
id3alistic, no mine has never fallen off in multiple months. I use it without the optional adhesive disk.
I been using quite lots of smartphone holder and most of smartphone car holder damage after hot sun burn. I living in tropical country. The connection the base to grip the suction rubber mostly made by plastic and damage easily like crispy cracker. So I curious with your review. What material between suction rubber and the base?
