Is there a point to 1080p screens? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With all the talks about Note 3 having 1080p screens - made me wonder, would there be that much a difference between 1080p and 720p screens when it comes to such small screens? I'm not talking of the screen quality, which is a whole different topic. Obviously it requires much more battery power, so is it worth it, really?

Makes no difference to me. I think my note 2 screen is good enough as is. Would choose battery life over pixel density any day.

Me too.I looked at the Note 2 and HTC One screens with the same image at the same time and i don't noticed any difference except the Note 2 being a little bit more saturated. And I like that saturation

The difference between 720p and 1080p screens is nearly not noticable for the human eye unless you realy blow up the image .

1080p is pointless on a phone sized screen. The only reason they made that jump is for marketing purposes. To the ignorant masses 1080p must be better because it's a higher resolution. The note 2 screen is already amazing and while I may upgrade to the note 3, which is almost certain to be 1080p, it would be for reasons which aren't the screen.
Sent from the mighty Note II.

Coming from an S3 to a Note 2 I did notice the Note 2 screen looked more "grainy" due to the larger pixels. However now I'm used to it I can't tell the difference.
I'll have to see the 1080p screen before I make a definitive judgement but I suspect you will be able to see the difference on a 5.5"+ screen. And bear in mind that the note 3 may well have a larger screen.

Same here, the S3 screen was so sharp and vivid I was slightly dissapointed when I had both in my hand to compare but on it's own merit I now love the Note II's screen and the phone as a whole, and would much prefer a little more battery life v a 1080p screen.
In fact, I don't even have the urge to upgrade anytime soon to any other phone as the Note II ticks all the boxes for me :good:

On a 5 or 6" screen the difference is not noticable by the naked eye.
I rather have a 5" 6mm thick Note 3 with no bezel, 120 grams and 3 days of battery life.
But Samsung seems to take it into a different direction which will ultimately result (I think, this is my thought) in loosing customers that prefer a thin, light and slick device over a feature bloated brick. So I will NOT update to the note three but either go 'back' (in screen size) to the S4 or switch to another brand altogeter. The HTC one seems nice if they fix that camera...

It's just a thing that looks good on a spec sheet. The only jump from 720p would be to 4k to see a difference. A few years back when I was looking for a tv everyone said unless your having a tv over 32" the difference between 720p and 1080p is negligible. So to see a difference on a 5" screen, doubt it.

It will be noticeable even with a naked eye, we just like to say it doesn't to keep ourselves satisfied with what we already own.

[Q] Screen

hey guys i was thinking about getting a galaxy but my only concern is the screen i have like an ocd thing about pixelation and i heard their hardly isnt any on the galaxy note 2 although it has less pixel density as well, well maybe at least compared to the gs3. how are you guys liking the new screen?
I came from the high ppi iPhone 4, from 326 to 267, and I'm very happy.
I'm not as OCD as you, but I'm still OCD, and with all the features of the Note 2, and humongous battery, I am definitely pleased.
1280x720 > 960x640 anyday, albeit lower ppi.
If you mean, clarity of small text. I can read full page pdf docs with smallish writing, in portrait mode. Dont have to zoom in. Iphone would be just a blur. The massive screen more than compensates for effectively tiny ppi differences. Wait till we have 1080p on 5inch displays then it will be more noticeable.

No problems here either. I've owned all of At&T's recent top end phones (iPhone 4, Note 1, One X, and S3 to name a few) , and I think it's the best screen on a mobile device to date. PPI isn't the end all be all. The bigger the device the greater the viewing distance is. The greater the distance the less PPI really matters. Can't really compare a 4" and 5.5" device on PPI alone.

1080 screens

Wanted some input from someone more tech savvy than I. Since the difference between 720 and 1080 smaller tv screens to our eyes are not much different (so I was told it only matters on very large tv's)
Will there be a huge discernable difference btween 720 and 1080 phone screens to the naked eye?
Thanks

I'm sure it makes a difference. How big of a difference I don't know. I haven't seen a 1080 screen yet. But the Note 2 has the best screen I've ever seen. I can't see the pixels, but when I look really close I can barely see the ragged edge of text. Simply reading it's wonderful, no pixels.
For a screen as big as the note 2's, you will definitely see a difference between 720p and 1080p.

I saw a droid dna and note 2 comparison side by side of the same .jpg image and I mean on the 1080p screen of the DNA you could definitely see the shadows on the space shuttle were more defined and not as washed out as the note 2 . Other very minute details were visible when you really looked at them . At first glance you could again see the dna was *slightly* more defined. Due to the lower pixel density and the 720p of the note 2.
That being said . Any difference was only slight and would not have lead me to chose the DNA over the note 2 alone. Now THAT being said. If you were going for the most high definition clearest possible picture with super bright colors . The note 2 is definitely not the winner.
I purchased the note 2 because I was going to buy a tablet in addition to the phone I had and the note 2 was JUST big enough to where it was acceptable for browsing the web and gaming as well as all the standard smart phone features. Im pleased with my choice as far as what I was looking for / expecting in my comprimise.

Agreed totally I was going to get a ipad mini for portable
. Browsing as iphone 4 was too small and iphone 5 didn't impress me with the changes so I branched out saw a note 2 it was love at first site I truly have a pc in my pocket everywhere. Yes it can be slightly more time consuming to do things but while out the house this is just a beast!

Same here. I had the nexus 7 and a Galaxy nexus. When the Note 2 came out I bought it simply because it's just big enough for both without carrying 2 devices. As far 720 vs 1080 I don't know that there would be to much visable difference. Not to mention you would need more battery to carry the extra on a 1080. I'm very happy with the screen on the Note 2!

NZTechfreak's connectivity review seems to imply that it can do this, are you sure it can't?
The Note 2 has plenty of pixels to do everything you want it to. Adding more pixels isn't going to make your user experience much better. Maybe worse if it drains the battery. Also, I would rather have the extra .5 inches of the Note 2.

Should Note 3 be slightly bigger?

For those who got this as a pseudo tablet? its been almost 6 weeks I got the beauty and about 2 weeks since I got the allshare cast, and I haven't touched my roku or asus media player
Note 2 is everything for me, after using it so much, the screen size is normal to me ( compared to my previous S3 ) but I really don't mind it being slightly bigger - about 6"

This question is redundant for many reasons, the biggest being I've seen about two active threads on XDA, about this...
Cnet: Galaxy Note 3 with 6.3-inch display reportedly in the works
The rumor is that 6.3" will be the next screen size. Whether this is true remains to be seen. Too early to tell.
With a 16:9 aspect ratio for the screen, that would mean the width of the phone would grow approximately 0.375" more, or 3.5". (Note II's width is 3.125".)
Personally, I actually like the idea. I probably wouldn't even mind a 7" (Approximately 7.25" if I go by 9cm x 16cm.) screen if they keep to the edge thinness around the screen, if not thinner. That should allow the growth of the phone to be as minimal as possible. Of course, I'd stop at 7" for the max size I wouldn't mind on my phone. Any larger and many people will definitely start having problems holding their phones edge to edge.

General Thread - thus the question
I am basically saying that since many of us got this as pseudo tablet, it would be nice to have a slightly bigger screen so we could read ebooks etc
When I got the S3, screen seemed big and then we get used to it, same with the note - but we could increase that threshold to perfection
Its still a phone man...are u kidding? if thats the case u gonna expect them to make it 8 inches next year???

I know but much better than carrying 2 devices, what I am saying it would satisfy being a tablet and a regular phone if it was slightly more bigger
I have no issues carrying it now, hands have plenty more room
I wouldn't care for a larger screen so much as I would like Samsung to natively support a better pixel density so that I could fit more onto the screen. Something like 182 instead of the default 240(?).
If they kept the phone the same size, but increased the screen size, it would not be too bad.
I'm wondering if the next Note could eliminate the home button. That would be one way of increasing screen real estate, without making the device too much larger. It could go fully-touchscreen, as Jelly Bean devices are supposed to be, anyway. However, I think the home button has sort of become synonymous with the Galaxy line of devices, so it may stay. I would love 6 - 6.3" inches on the new Note. I wouldn't have issues with mobility.

Then its like the tablet, but seriously, slightly more bigger would be sweet
I would like to see no home button and screen extended all the way up and down. 6"-6,3" screen would be awesome.
I am fine as is hope they don't make the size of the phone bigger. If they can make screen bigger but keep same size I am OK with that.

I used to think I'd want a Note 3 to have a 6" screen with small bezels and no home button. Now that I've played with my Note 2 for a week, I'm guessing I'll prefer going the other way. I'd rather have a 5" 1080p phone with very thin side bezels, a thin top bezel, and a thicker bottom bezel with 5 configurable capacitive buttons (I have a Nexus 7 and I like most things Nexus, but disagree with the move to on-screen buttons which most of the time waste real-estate). I'd be fine with a thicker phone too though to get an even bigger battery - heck, I'll take 4000 mAh or more, now that I know what 3100 can do. I knew the Note 2 was long and had tried mockups before buying, but now that I have the real thing, it's a bit too long for me - not a deal breaker, but I no longer think about going bigger. By the time 5" 1080p screens are common items and I upgrade from the Note 2, I hope there will be lots of options, some with pens (which I'm not convinced I need, but an interesting thing to try), and ideally, some without Touchwiz which I really don't like so far - I'm sure I'll be trying a ROM with a more Nexus like experience before I'm done with this phone. Too bad Google missed the ball (for me) so badly with the Nexus 4, I would have liked to consider it. Maybe the Nexus 5 or whatever the first 1080p Nexus will be called will be better.

This has absolutely no chance in hell of happening, for a plethora of reasons.
1) It would be going backwards, when sales of the Galaxy Note line have proven that people like phones with really large screens, so Samsung backtracking to anything smaller that 5.5" inches would be stupid, and would eventually run into product overlap.
2) The product overlap would come with the rumored Galaxy S4. The S4 is strongly rumored to have a 5" screen. There's probably a good chance it will also have 1080p, but I sort of doubt it. At any rate, there would be no business case for Samsung to have two products that are virtually identical. The S III already shares a significant amount of the Note IIs features, sans having an S Pen. You make a Note III with a 5" screen and you'll just have an S4 with an S Pen. That's utterly asinine.
3) I'm willing to bet the vast majority of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 720p screen and a 1080p screen. This is just the hype for this year. Seems like every year there a new hype geared towards sheep and ill-informed people. One year it was 3D technology. Last year it was quad core technology. This year its 1080p. Another year photo pixels were all the rave. Another year Apple's retina display was all the rave. Pretty much none of those things mean jack s*** in the grand scheme of things. I remember when I was going to purchase a new 40"+ 3D LED TV. I read many reviews to see if there was a huge difference between 720p and full-1080p HD. EVERY review stated that the only time the difference between 720p & 1080p became noticeable and worth considering, was when you had a screen larger than 40". So, if that's true, there's no way in hell anyone is seeing a noteworthy screen difference in a device as small as a cellular phone. At one point, I had a 720p Plasma HDTV and a 3D LED HDTV, simultaneously. To be honest, I was more impressed with the display on my 720p plasma, than I am on my 1080p 3D TV I ended up keeping. And I only kept the 3D television because it was packed with more features that sort of leveled the playing field.
If you desire as smaller phone, the great thing about Android, is that there's seemingly an endless array of phones to choose from. Get an S III or S4 or DNA or Nexus. Sounds like the Note II isn't a good fit for you.
Currently I'm sure I can't tell the difference between 1280x720 and 1920x1080 for a 5" display. When I finally break down and admit I'm old enough to use reading glasses (which I should have done years ago as my close focus distance moved from 7" where it used to be to 13" now), then I suspect I will be able to tell the difference when holding my phone closer than 8". Other than focus, I have no issue holding my phone that close and I'll be able to get that much more detail into my brain (from maps, text, whatever). You can call 1080p hype if you want, but I think it is still actual progress. I don't know what photo pixels are, and I was not interested in 3D myself, but 1080p I am optimistic about.
Sorry if I'm not following thread rules or something - I'm just saying what I was thinking. I agree that Samsung Note 3 will quite likely go bigger, especially if the S4 is bigger. Who knows, anything could happen by the time I get another phone - maybe the glasses concept will be so appealing, I'll go that route.
I chose the Note II because a) I wanted a 5" or more display, b) I wanted to try out the s-pen concept which I don't know if it will be for me or not till I try, c) I wanted a big battery, and SD storage, d) I don't want to change carriers since as much as I don't like AT&T for many reasons, I'm on a family plan which I don't want to change and they are the only carrier with good coverage over my work campus. I ruled out the Nexus 4 and the Droid DNA pretty fast though I looked at them. I absolutely didn't need LTE and my data experience with AT&T around Los Angeles for a few days and Las Vegas for a few days has been very unimpressive - no better than my previous 3GS iPhone. Hopefully that will improve as the network improves.
Anyway, it's pretty early to speculate now - I better get back to figuring out how to use my phone to get my core iPhone use cases working again: podcasts, visual voicemail (both of these use cases require installing add on software I've found), offline topographic maps (I have 3 programs I've been trying on the Nexus 7), and a few other things. For ROMs, the HyperNote sounded the most interesting to me, but it seems like the AT&T model won't run many ROMs yet (e.g. no HyperNote yet) - I hope this is some transitional issue as porting ROMs from the International to the various carrier versions (which is a huge annoyance to me that this fracturing even exists) is worked out.

[Q] How is the screen size vs the Note 1.

Had note 1. For me note 2 is more comfortable than with note1. Note 2 way better in all aspects than note1
The screen is a bit higher, but smaller between the sides. I prefer it like this for games, videos etc. because that's why it fits much better in Your hand than the Note 2. The rounder shape is another huge improvement imho.

Thank you for your information. I liked the Note 2 in every way I was just unsure about the new screen size and how it would compare. How do you like it for viewing webpages and reading, does it seem to impact it much?
It is sounding like a better choices so far though
Well, there are fewer pixels, but I am the kind of person that can't stand pentile sub pixels, so for me, the image quality is much better on the note 2. It's easier on my eyes.

Aspect ratio on old Note was better imho. Phones are usually not held in landscape, so you need the real estate of the wider screen if it is to feel really big. 16:9 is better for movies than phones.
Never had anyone go 'omg that's HUGE' on the Note II, while it was quite common for the first Note. Not sure if it's the narrower screen that's the reason for that, or just that every other phone have grown for the past year
Apart from aspect ratio, Note II screen is better in every way.

I don't really think, Note 1 was better for browsing since You've got a pentile matrix there where it's not so nice to read anything. On Note 2 there are RGB-Pixels improving the overall screen impression. I really love surfing with my Note 2: It's just the perfect size for a smartphone You want to use for everything.

Having had the note 1 for some time as well I would say the wider screen is better for browsing on the note 1. However the note 2 fits infinitely better in your pocket and for me that is a small compromise to make. If im going to do some serious browsing I'll switch to the desktop. Most of the sites I access from the Note 2 have their own specific apps. Like xda
It sounds like it isn't the biggest issue to people who have one. I almost never use landscape mode unless for a video/game. I am glad to hear it seems to fit better in ones hand. I can one hand it, but it does feel awkward at times.
Thank you all for your help.

Optimus G Pro vs Galaxy Note 2 screen/batt life

Is the increased resolution of the G Pro a big deal ? What is the G Pro superior for and where (if anywhere) will you be able to tell the difference side by side?
What about the battery life?
The screen on the OG Pro absolutely blows Note 2's away. All benchmarks I have seen favor the OG Pro. IMHO, the only category Note 2 wins is the pen. If you must have a pen, and think you can avoid losing it, get the Note 2. (I've heard that the OG Pro will work with any capacitive stylus, just not quite as precise as the Note 2's pen. Haven't tested, though) Note 3 comes out this fall...
---------- Post added at 10:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:17 PM ----------
Note 2's battery can probably do a bit more screen-on time because of the less demanding display, otherwise pretty close in this category.
Ive had past experiences with lg and never will i be buying an lg phone again. I like custom roms and new updates..and with lg,they take a hell lot time to update their rom. Plus when they do it, they give u crappy software.
Get the note 2 and u wont regret it. Battery life is awesome. I get 6-7h of screen time with moderate use. Anyway just my 2 cents..Good luck with ur decision.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
I already have the Note 2 actually, but it's clearly a defective unit, as it randomly reboots and freezes. I'm thinking of returning it for another Note 2, but I was considering the G Pro.
I'm pleased with the screen of the Note 2.In what does the G Pro screen "blow away" the Note 2. Again, I know, more pixels... but is that really noticeable?
Don't like the locked bootloader on the G Pro
I spent some time with one in the AT&T store a few days ago. The OGP screen is all that it's cracked up to be. It's virtually impossible to see pixels, and in a totally other league from any of the 720 * 1280 screens available.
Ive played with the note 2 and the screen realy is that much better. Plus while lg does have crappy software there will likely be lotsa development once the bootloader is unlocked and will solve that problem. What can't be solved tho is samsungs shotty craftsmanship. U drop any samsung device from more than waist high, and ur replacing something, if not the whole phone. Just youtube droptests for samsung devices they consistantly do the worst of any device. As for a stylus the screen works with gloves on, anything can be used as a stylus on this ive seen more than one video where people used a regular pen although there no software support for it. While other phones may do 1 or 2 things better you can't buy a better all around phone right now. And its lookin like its gonna be that way till the note 3 and even then the enyxos 5s are barely outperforming the 600s although their design does give them better battery life.

Is the increased resolution of the G Pro a big deal ? What is the G Pro superior for and where (if anywhere) will you be able to tell the difference side by side?
What about the battery life?

I'm pretty much in the same boat but compared against the S4. Im also a bit more concerened about phone durability. I take care of my things but I want a little more cushion for when accidents happen. Is the OG Pro just as fragile as the s4? Has anyone managed to accidentally crack theirs?

I spent some time with one in the AT&T store a few days ago. The OGP screen is all that it's cracked up to be. It's virtually impossible to see pixels, and in a totally other league from any of the 720 * 1280 screens available.

OK, so I understand that the screen is better, but where will I notice it compared to Note 2? In videos? Pictures? Text? Brightness? Outdoor visibility? Colors?

I have a note 2, an iPhone 5, LG OG, GS 4, and have used One, plus all major devices before. For me, the main difference is the age old debate of LCD vs AMOLED. I prefer LCD. Colors are more true and whites are actually white. You can use different screen modes with the note 2 to minimize the over saturation, but o stool poetry LCD. The OG Pro also does better outdoors in sunlight. Overall the screen seems brighter and the increased resolution does make a difference. In my experience, the battery is not as good on the OG Pro, but still better than most Android devices.
The battery life is a concern to me. How much worse than the Note 2 should I expect. I have to say I have no idea what the Note 2 is capable of, as my current unit is defective.
Get the OGP if you like natural colors and a awesome screen
I had the Note 2. Its about the same. I used it for a while this morning before it even fell off 100%. The screen gets way brighter which believe me u will appreciate.

It's not just the color accuracy. The added resolution really makes a difference. I could read full desktop web sites without zooming in. The Note 2 lacks the resolution for that. The One & S4 screens are too small to do so comfortably. The only strike on the screen is that it can't get the almost infinite blacks of an AMOLED screen.
I've heard that the Note 3 will still use a pentile pixel arrangement. On the S4, that's fine. The pixels are too small for it to matter. But on a 6 inch screen, I know I'd start to see sub pixels. Sure, it would be less obvious than on an S3, but I'd rather not see them at all.
I just got a replacement Note II, and think I'm going to stick with it. The device is easier to get here in Canada, as oposed to the G Pro which right now I can only get from AT&T in the States... The Note can be unlocked for free and used on practically any network here... and the bootloader isn't locked.
I already find the screen resolution of the Note 2satisfying for watching video...G Pro could have swayed me if it was REALLY good in sunlight such as say the Nokia 920, but it appears that isn't...The battery life on the Note 2 is also bound to be better (since the screen is only 720p). The camera on the G Pro doesn't appear to better the one on Note II either, even though the resolution is increased....
Check out this vs review. Lots of good stuff. They put out some opinions and more subjective details. Lots of objective stuff.

I have checked it out previously... the G Pro appears to be significantly better according to that review is the Synthetic Benchmarks, but I have no idea if this is really something noticeable in real life? They actuallly stated that he Note II has better sunlight visiblity what the heck...???
The synthetic benchmarks are one measurement, but the difference for me is not really noticeable from a lag or fluidness perspective. The screen on the pro g is pretty reflective. They're saying the digitizer for the s pen gives it a bit of a filter.
I have the note 2, s4, HTC one, and this phone and LG Optimus G Pro has the best screen of them all hands down. It also has great battery life and the screen does kill note 2. Plus the phone is easier to hold in hand and handle compared to note 2. Note 2 has stylus which is nice but if you don't use it LG is better.

Well being only half an inch bigger then an s4 doesn't make an enormous difference. I had the note 2 and went to the s4 I'm not sad that I lost that half an inch. The pen was cool though. But never used it too much.
