[Q] Can't connect to camera on AOSP Roms? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I can't seem to connect to my camera after flashing my ROM. I get "Camera Error: Can't connect to the camera". I'm using an N7105
I've tried:
1. CM10.1 and AOKP-JB-mr1-build6 roms. Restoring to the stock ROM made the camera work again, but flashing to the AOSP roms again after that breaks the camera.
2. Tried the NEAK kernel.
3. Tried removing the sdcard.
4. Tried fixing permissions in CWM.
I noticed that this seems to be an issue with AOSP Roms and S3s, but I can't seem to find a fix for the Note II. Is there one?
Thanks in advance!

Try some other kernel....

Any solution to this? I'm experiencing the same phenomenon, nothing seems to remedy it. Flashed different roms, kernels, etc.

Did u guys used touch focus or the camera app wont Just open? The aosp camera works fine but Whenever u use the touch focus while flash is set on : always on: then it will FC.. reboot and try again.. (my experience)
Cheers

Nah, for me it just won't open up at all, in any AOSP ROM i try. Full wipes of system, caches, etc. I don't know what else to try.
App starts, I see controls and black screen, then "Cannot connect to camera"

Exactly the same problem for me. Tried multiple camera apps all with the same effect.

Im aware that this is for the Galaxy S3 but looks like a similar problem and might be worth trying out.

I will give it a go when I get a chance but busy at work today so may not happen any time soon.

I find this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moblynx.camerajbplus
to be the best alternative.

Its not about the app. Its about the Camera. No app can connect to the camera because the firmware doesnt exist in the AOSP ROMs, only in the stock ROMs

I think I read that a recent CM nightly made some kind of stride forward in the camera dept. Haven't tested it, as am surprised to find myself happy with the stock ROM (albeit debloated).
from tapatalk (Galaxy Note 2)

Does it have to do with fixing permissions? I had this same error on my T-mobile Note 2 when I tried using an AOSP rom. I tried re-wiping, flashing etc to no avail. I was just getting ready to try an updated version to see if this fixed it.

Ofcourse it does, prior to installing this app the default camera was working just fine with slimbean which is based off of AOSP. Ive only changed my default camera because of the extra options, otherwise default work. Get your facts straight. Also i can connect to the camera just fine using any application including social and media apps..

Okay, so maybe it has been added to that ROM or maybe your camera has a different firmware to mine. For reference my camera firmwares are
REAR CAMERA:
Cam FW Ver: ZMGA01
Phone FW Ver: ZMGA01
FRONT CAMERA:
Cam and Phone FW Ver: S5K6A3

So after a couple of days of research I have managed to solve this problem.
Problem
When using a non-stock rom if you try to open ANY camera application that uses the rear camera you get the message "Can't Connect to camera" and the application force closes.Solution
Flash back to a stock ROM where the camera works and root your device.
Dial *#34971539# in stock dialer.
Check your camera vendor using "Phone/CAM FW Ver Check". For me it was ZMGA01
Install Root Explorer from the Google Store
Use Root Explorer to navigate to /data/cfw/
Copy the SlimISP_xx.bin to your SDCARD where xx = the first two letters of your firmware. For me it was SlimISP_ZM.bin
Flash the ROM you wish to use. I installed CM10.1
Using Root Explorer place the SlimISP_xx.bin into /data/cfw/
Change the permissions on the file to 775 (rwxrwxr-x)
Change the owner to System
Change the group to Media
Launch your camera app of choice
Take photos.
I have submitted my camera firmware file to CM10.1 so hopefully if anyone else has this camera it should start working for you i you flash the latest nightly in a few days.
I would rate this as something that is easy to do yourself, the biggest problem I had was researching it.
Thanks,

/data/cfw/ empty for me

I believe on some ROMs the camera firmware is kept somewhere else (Obviously) filename format should be the same though.

The mod is not anymore necessary, look a the cyanogen install package under /system/vendor/firmware
All the firmware have been submitted.. but I had the issue...
I fixed the whole thing using NEAK kernel.

Hi,
i have changed rom to cyanogen 10.2 because my original rom not working camera (error connecting to camera). so i tried to reset to defaults with same result. I changed rom to cyanogen 10.2 (it was very good) and i have the same camera problem. I changed with another N7100 camera (in other phone it worked fine ) and it work for 1 day (in the other phone a put the "not working camera" and it worksssss) . So i think tnat is not a camera hardware problem. In cyanogen the dialer pressing test function doesn't work and in "/data/cfw" directory i have 8 files : SlimISP_BH, SlimSP_GD, SlimSP_GH, SlimSP_GK, SlimSP_ZD, SlimSP_ZH,SlimSP_ZK,SlimSP_ZM files. I have to had only one of this (i don't know my original firmware) or the cyanogen generic N7100 rom have all camera firmware to logically work with all N7100 firmware? I think that every specific firmware phone get automatically its file for the firmware they have. But i think that all firmware in the same direcotry can overload the rom information firmware too. I need to return to stock and check with original rom by dealer what firmware i have ? It was an original N7100 tim branded phone (samsung changed already 1 time camera in warrenty time but after 2 months the same error). I don't want to think its a logic board problem because or work or not work. I think its a "stupid" firmware problem.

- thanks britoso
2e recovery available
Flash GTalk 1.3 with recovery
Enjoy!
no 2e recovery
(1) Download old froyo SpeedMod kernel (to get 2e recovery back - only to flash update)
details http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
eg. speedmod-kernel-k13e-500hz.tar
(2) Flash speedmod with ODIN
(3) Flash GTalk 1.3 with 2e recovery
(4) Reflash back to previous kernel
Note: Chainfire v3.1 (same as kernel from v2.2 of romkitchen beta)
CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS.zip see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
(5) Unzip CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS.zip, and flash with ODIN
Note: Attempting to install talk1.3.update-signed.zip via ROM Manager fails the signing check if 2e recovery to available.
[Note: Gingerbread ROM (romkitchen.org/beta v2.2) doen't yet have 2e recovery]
Thanks to habylab for the suggestion of swapping the kernel.

Thanks,, well test it later
will it work with CWM recovery 2.5?
Hi!
I can not find the way to use the front camera for videocalling in my SGS i9000, the main camera is the only video source you can use.. Do u know this? how to fix it?
Thanks!
What's going on here?
Just push the app using ADB into the /system/app .. or use root explorer. and
Do the same for that library file... to /system/lib... clear dalvik. restart.
Why all this reverse 2.2 flashing and everything?!!
Also... Search the forum before asking the doubts.. Front camera is not yet available in this hacked version. it has been told more than ten times ( or hundred) already. Straight away asking for a fix for a hacked app wont help it.
Work fine on deodexed jvh here.. Tq ...but only audio? Can't make video call
--editt--
sorry...can make video call, but no image/video shown...

I did it, for your information and the hundred of people who asked it. it's possible to switch between cameras in some terminals / roms . People who made it call Gtalk 2.0 to this app (Hacked) able to do it possible. (if somebody knows the link or URL.. would be very kind from them to post it )
This post is located at SGS i9000, if i made a question about that it was due to we´ve read gtalk 1.3 version.
Anyway thanks for the information, i've been searching/goggling and there's nothing about switching between cameras for any OFFICIAL RELEASE already.

You can make a video call, rear camera output shows on the phone but doesn't get received at the other end.
Video incoming to the phone displays fine.
Audio works both ways.
I may have been using gapps-gb-20110503 too. Don't remember sorry.

I'm on Darky's 10RC3. Supposedly Darky 10RC6 has some talk app from the SGS2... I don't know if that's working.
So big FYI here...
I installed the flashable version (Talk1.3.update or something like that) it is worked exactly as described in Sprint's post. PC user could not see my camera output (don't know if other phone user could see or not see). Also note that you need to enable others to hear you in the application.
I tried installing the gapps-gb package...and my gmail program disapeered. Because I didn't use a condom...uh...I mean make a backup... I had to reflash my ROM in order to get gmail back.
I too have noticed that on some ROMs of some phones, people do have the ability to switch between cameras. So I was hoping there is a "hack" solution to this problem.
Anyone know if Bluetooth works for audio calls?
Thanks, gonna try that

When I saw this, I though, "Your'e crazy!" But I tried it anyway...yeah, I'm crazy too...Amazingly, it actually works!! It's pretty slow (and the camera preview goes wonky just like the stock JB camera app), and video recording is broken on this ROM currently (Pons CM10-Unofficial-11-01). But the 4.2 camera actually works.
I copied the files over manually and fixed permissions (I used X-plore, but Root Explorer or adb would work as well), that way I could back up all the files I was replacing in case things went ugly. I quickly found:
The Problem. There's not enough room on the system partition for this newer (bigger) camera app and for the extra libs it requires. SO it will fail if you just try to flash the .zip. The easiest way to get it to work is to use Titanium Backup to uninstall some stuff. First to go is Gallery (we're replacing that), then I uninstalled Email, Exchange Services, Setup Wizard, Google One Time Init, and Trebuchet (make sure you have another launcher installed before you remove Trebuchet). THen, it was just a matter of copying the new files into place, fixing their permissions, and rebooting. But if you clean up some space on /system, you should be able to install the .zip from recovery and be good to go.

I did exactly what you put and it WORKED!!! you have no idea how excited I am thank you so very much!
Just by way of confirmation, it does work (and is easier) to install the 4.2 camera this way:
1. Install your favorite JB ROM and gapps; boot the phone.
2. Using Titanium, uninstall gallery, and a few other things as mentined in post #2.
3. Boot into recovery again and install the 4.2 camera zip. (the one that's patched to work on non-nexus devices, procured elsewhere)
4. Boot the phone again and enjoy the goodness!
If anybody figures out a way to get anything useful out of photosphere on this phone, let me know.

All good advice, and uninstalling unneeded system apps is prudent with JB Roms. But to short circuit all this - I simply use the Camera360 app, which I find to be much better than the native camera app.

Except this thread is about the 4.2 camera which has Photosphere it in, not the stock app itself.
Well photosphere seems to be pretty much a functional failure on the Dinc, but the new gallery app is pretty cool. It's fast (it took some time to 'settle in'), plus the photo editing features are pretty neat. I'm liking it!
do you have a link where the 4.2 camera zip is? The 4.2 camera being discussed in this thread had been ripped from the Nexus 4 and patched by Android Police (I believe) to work on other phones. I don't have the link handy, but I'm not sure it would do you any good anyway. What are you trying to fix? The camera (except for video recording) works on tiny's CM10, works better than the 4.2 camera actually because the camera preview goes nuts sometimes on the 4.2 camera, and tiny's CM10 uses the legacy (ICS) camera which does not have the preview issues. If you really want the 4.2 camera, an easier way to get it is to flash tiny's CM10.1, but like I said, this will have the preview issues. The only difference between the default CM10.1 camera and the patched 4.2 camera is Photosphere, which does not work on our phones anyway.
If you're looking for a camera 'fix' for CM10, the only thing that needs fixing is the camcorder, and for that you have two options:
1. Low-quality video recording with VideoCam Illusions, free on the Play Store
2. Use a Gingerbread (or older) ROM.
sorry for misunderstanding, I've been looking everywhere to figure out the issues I'm having with this dinc. I can't get the camera working or Netflix running tinys cm10. I don't think it's the Rom but I can't figure out where I've gone wrong. I've been lurking these forums for a while and have been able to troubleshoot the three other devices pretty good with the amazing info on here, but this one is getting the best of me at the moment. bought this dinc reconditioned, it was running 2.3.4 and I followed a tutorial to downgrade to 2.2 and root and get s-off with cwm. I upgraded to the latest cwm recovery and have flashed this rom 3 times trying to make sure it was clean. just keep getting a black screen when I try any camera app until it force closes. when I play a movie on Netflix everything works but the video is a black screen, even the sound plays. I realize this is in the wrong place but I can't post in dev yet, maybe I should start a new thread?

Netflix is broken on this device past gingerbread. I've yet to hear a single user report video on Netflix as working.
Do you remember having a working camera when you first started using it? It could be hardware failure for the camera. Also which gapps file did you flash? If you flashed the wrong one it could cause funkiness. If you didn't flash any, the camera should be working. I know that doesn't make sense but try to answer these questions as best as you can.
I followed the link to the gapps from tinys cm10 thread and downloaded jb 20121011 signed. I'll try without gapps tomorrow to see what that does. I hadn't begun to look into the Netflix issue yet so thank you for saving me the time on that. if that's not the right gapps then I'll try another, I appreciate the help, thank you. thanks for an awesome Rom btw, I have yet to find one this nice for any other device I'm using. Front Camera Lag/Stretch in 3rd Party Apps

I'm having an issue on my SPH-L710 where the back camera works in all cases, but the front camera is laggy and stutters, and has a skewed / stretched aspect ratio in all applications except the camera app itself. That is, the front camera works as expected, fast and looks normal in the stock camera app or the google camera app, but when it is embedded in another such as facebook, snapchat, etc., it exhibits the problems above.
This is not a problem on ND8 (4.4) stock, but has happened on all the custom roms I have tried in the list below :
Slim-d2lte-4.4.4.build.7.0-OFFICIAL-5979
Slim-d2lte-4.4.4.build.7.2.1-WEEKLY-6080
cm-11-20140814-NIGHTLY-d2lte
cm-11-20140805-SNAPSHOT-M9-d2lte
BeanStalk-4.4.4010-20140722-d2lte
Quantum.4
I do a factory wipe and erase the cache every time. I have tried force closing the camera and gallery apps and clearing their data. None of these solutions have worked. What roms are other people using that don't have this issue? If the issue is this widespread, I would think there would be more posts regarding it.
I just tested the front camera on Facebook and another app. I was not able to replicate the problem and experienced no issues with the front camera preview.
Tested and working on CM11 20140812 Nightly w/ stock kernel and just finished testing with DKP kernel.
It could be hardware related if you are not seeing this as a common issue in forums.

Can't see it being hardware related if the camera works just fine in the stock camera. I'll install that nightly and see how it works.

Right. You did mention that detail. Hope another nightly works for you.
Just tested cm-11-20140812-NIGHTLY-d2lte and I am having the same issue. No idea what could be wrong. Are you sure its not skewed in any way on the front camera?
I wiped and installed the nightly and gapps-kk-20140606-signed, went straight to google play, installed messenger, and tested the camera. No funny business, and it doesn't display correctly.

I am 100% sure there is no skewing, distortion, stretching etc. on apps accessing the front camera outside of the stock camera app.
The only difference between our setup is that I use this GAPPs package:

I also use the DKP kernel, as I mentioned before. But, as I also reported, stock kernel worked fine for me, too.
No luck even with GAPPS pa_gapps-stock-4.4.4-20140629-signed with and without the DKP kernel dkp-aosp44-d2-20140726.

I was reading around a bit more on the Internet. Have you tried going into the Google Camera app settings when you launch the camera from one of the apps in questions and changing the resolution? I read on a few sites that this might fix the stretch issue. I'll keep digging around.
I don't suspect that it's a code issue, since mine is working normally. Do you have more than one camera app installed that is possibly tweaking the resolution? Just a thought.
I have tried to change the picture size from 1:1 to 4:3 of the front facing camera in the camera app, as well as change the resolution from 1.9 to 1.3, but neither change is reflected in the facebook messenger camera. I also tried using no GAPPS and installing the facebook messenger APK only after a fresh install, and still have the problem, so it's not a separate app causing the issue. Are you sure you're using a SPH-L710?
I'm assuming the problem is in whatever base all these custom roms are built on, but since it's working for you, I have no idea.
For the record, I am installing CM11 with recovery CWM-6045_touch_d2spr_naddict and the other roms philz_touch_6.48.4-d2lte only because CM11 wont install with philz due to assert failures.

Yes. I have a SPH-L710. I encourage you to ensure that you are using the correct and most current version of Philz recovery for our device, as I am able to successfully install CM11 using Philz.
Please download and try the latest Philz recovery here, and try wiping and reflashing the ROM and GAPPs.

The following procedure fixed the front facing camera 3rd party apps for me, but in turn now the camera app itself is broken. Still trying to figure this out.
Flash philz_touch_6.48.4-d2lte.tar.md5 with Odin 3.09
Flash ROM Slim-d2lte-4.4.4.build.7.2.1-WEEKLY-6080
Flash GAPPS pa_gapps-stock-4.4.4-20140629-signed
Ensure root (apps) is enabled on ROM (slimkat defaults to disabled)
1. Enable Developer Options - Click Settings / About Phone / Build number 5 times
2. Enable root (Apps only) - Developer Options / Debugging / Root Access
Install root browser (jrummy)
Install facebook messenger
Verify camera does NOT display correctly in facebook messenger
Using root browser, delete system/lib/hw/camera.MSM8960.so (Give root browser permission to superuser when prompted)
Using root browser, rename system/lib/hw/camera.vendor.MSM8960.so to system/lib/hw/camera.MSM8960.so
Verify camera still does NOT display correctly in facebook messenger
Reboot (Reboot necessary? Camera saved in memory?)
Verify camera does display correctly in facebook messenger

All you did there was delete and rename a camera library, which are stored in the kernel, and that I perceive to be the reason the camera broke.
Are you savvy on ADB?
I think at this point the best thing for your to do would be to:
Flash ROM Slim-d2lte-4.4.4.build.7.2.1-WEEKLY-6080
Flash GAPPS pa_gapps-stock-4.4.4-20140629-signed
Get everything back up to a freshly flashed ROM with GAPPs, then:
1. Enable Developer Options
2. In Developer Options, enable USB debugging
3. Connect phone to USB port on PC
4. Launch ADB
5. Input command: adb devices (to ensure the device has been detected by adb)
6. Input command: adb logcat
7. Launch and switch to front camera in 3rd-party app
8. Disconnect USB cable
9. Copy and paste text from ADB terminal into a Notepad document. Save document (e.g. logcat.txt).
10. Upload Notepad document as attachment (.txt file) to this thread on XDA.
Yes, well by deleting the one camera library and replacing it with the camera.vendor, everything works exactly as it should in the 3rd party application. Its just when using the stock camera app where it doesnt work now - essentially making the opposite situation I started with. FYI with the fix the stock camera looks fine and can take a picture but usually closes and forces a reboot right away.
Here is the logcat for opening messenger, opening the camera option and snapping a (stretched) picture.
It seems I've been summoned.
I didn't see a whole lot in the logcat (or rather, the camera spews so much debug info that nothing stood out). So far, I'm able to reproduce the stretched preview thing but not the lag. I think the lag probably depends on the app, so I'll try a few more.
I think I know what's causing the stretching, but I won't know for sure until I get a ROM built.
EDIT: My changes didn't help any.

Thank you tremendously for trying!
Any idea why it would only be affecting his phone in other apps?
Guessing there's no solution to this until someone in the CM main trunk figures it out.

Camera app broke

Hello, for some reason the portrait on my back camera doesn't work (normal and wide but on the front camera works). It's just hangs for a bit and it tells me "camera unavailable". I've used custom roms before but I'm currently running rooted stock 10f (no magisk modules). Also the AR sticker mode will just sent me back to auto mode when I try to use it.

Everything is working except for the Portrait mode. I've already tried deleting the data but it didn't work.
the portrait mode is with the com.lge.ellieservice.app too I believe I'll try to look more in to it see if I can help and would think you need busybox in magisk for sys link idk

From what I see from the log it tries to access camera Id 3. Why? IDK.
08-29 12:39:31.078 W/System.err(12330): java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: supportsCameraApi:2034: Unknown camera ID 3

I doesn't look like it's from the permission. I'm just going to reinstall the stock since at boot it shows that there's something wrong with the system.
you mean stock system if your getting errors at boot that's the reason if others don't we don't have root yet on tmobile g7 the android manifest.xml is normally the reason for java errors good luck
I used a gcam stark wide angle to work wide on g5 it fixed cam it was the back shell of phone I ordered off eBay it had issues updated to 8.0 used gcam worked kinda my front and back cam was swapped around it made it work

I need AsusCamera folder from vendor folder!

I tried to install asus camera rog phone port to see if it works. To do that i uninstalled the older stock camera 3.0 with lucky patcher. After a firmware reinstalling i got back the default camera 3.0 but there is the "DITLibStill, Load DIT lib error." I did a stupid thing. I think that some libs are missing which should be in /system/vendor/app/AsusCamera/lib. Someone could upload AsusCamera folder and send me the link please? Help me
EDIT. Ok. I found the weird solution which i've already experienced with asus gallery.... What i did was going in AsusCamera folder in vendor, install the asus camera apk you find here, open it and there won't be some features. It will be quite empty. Then go to the camera info and select "uninstall updates". That's it. It's fantastic. I think someone who is expert could explain this
Hi @Ryder.
I have this same error on the camera in a custom room that I installed. Do you believe that if I copy the folder "/system/vendor/app/AsusCamera/lib" to the new rom, can it work?

I don't know. But i think it would need other folders and files/libs too. For example the ones in /data/data/com.asus.camera. Then you have to set the right permissions of course
What custom rom did you install??
Got it. Previously I tried copying as many asus camera files (including multiple libs folders), but it did not work.
About the rom I'm using, it's the lineageOS 16.0:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-3/development/rom-lineageos-16-0-ze520kl-ze552kl-t3848349
Since I'm not very knowledgeable about how libs works, I'll be careful to see if anyone else will be able to solve this problem.
Anyway, thank you
