BUG: JB 4.1.2 update - Pressing Home Button to wake brings up task manager sometimes? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

I dont see a lot of posts about this. But, there is a very annoying bug after the update; where if I press the Home Button to wake the screen, it will sometimes launch the task manager about a second later. I've seen sporadic posts about this for Tmobile as well as Sprint for JB 4.1.2 update; but nobody seems to have a solution.
I guess it's possible that some people dont think it's annoying enough to post; or, it's a possiblility it only affects people who have the factory rooted update installed.
I'm hoping someone smarter than me has already figured out a way to circumvent this very annoying behavior. What makes it really bad is that it only sometimes happens.
PS: The only carrier that doesn't seem to have this issue after the 4.1.2 update is ATT. My guess is they caught this bug before pushing it to all their customers.

I'm going to bet that is you disable your lockscreen you'll see this behavior just about every time. I'm fairly certain I tracked down at least one way to circumvent this behavior - check out this post for some info on it. The take home - my approach requires a wee bit of smali hacking, and everything that utilizing such a solution entails...

Dwitherell, thank you so much for responding. I was even considering on reverting back to 4.1.1 because of this. I don't use any kind password or pattern lock.
Forgive my ignorance, but the post you pointed me to locks like its on a Jedi ROM. I don't even see any specific references to this issue. What is this fix for specifically? If it is for sure going to restore normal behavior, i guess i could try to do this hack.
If this issue is as wide spread as i think it is, is there any chance you could make a tiny root app that fixes the problem or some way of automating a fix for not so technical people? How wide spread is this issue? Thanks a million for your help.

My annoying fix...
I have been plagued by this since the update as well. I have tried factory resets and uninstall programs one by one. Nothing worked. Today I decided to try removing my lock screen pin, just used the swipe to unlock. That did not work. Then it came to me...
I set back up my pin to unlock, and switched the setting "Lock automatically" to Immediately instead of having a delay that I love. That "worked" as in it no longer goes to recent apps. But now I have to chose to have a pin to unlock it every time my screen turns off or remove security or deal with the recent apps issue. Any way you choose it's an extra annoying step to unlock.
I'd like to hear if anyone else has found any other solution.
Edit.... I have tried every lock option and as long as set to lock immediately, it will eliminate the problem. And the same with setting any delay, with any lock option it will result in the recent apps.

I forgot to mention that lock screen prevents this bug from happenening. I'm guessing that's why not everyone has complained about the issue.. and why the bug somehow sneaked passed beta testing of 4.1.2. I would think this changed behavior was a new "feature" as horrible as it is, but it looks like it dad unintentional since its not consistent behavior.
I'm hoping that a kind android developer who also can't stand this problem, Kay offer a small script or app for rooted user to patch this problem.

It was posted in a Jedi thread, but only because that is where I noticed it was mentioned. The context outside that single post was someone stating the same observation as you, my responding saying that I was also annoyed by it, with a later edit saying I may have come up with a workaround for it, and their response of "tell me more". As far as automating a fix or creating an app or the like - that is well beyond my paygrade unfortunately. What are you running? If you are interested you could PM me - all I need is your android.policy.jar (or to know what you are currently running) and I can try to get a fix together for you given some other conditions (i.e. have a custom recovery installed so you can flash things). It seems to have fixed it on my end, but I would be very interested in getting some others to test

You did it! Your fix works perfectly! The bug is gone! ...like the bug was never there. My understanding is the fix prevents the phone from stupidly trying to launch the task manager when the screen wakes by the home button. I also donated for you time and effort. Thanks a million.

No, thank you for making me learn how to put an odexed mod together and testing it for me!
So this fix will work for anyone running a stock odexed version of 4.1.2 UVBMB4 - you just need to be rooted, and having a custom recovery would be nice so you could flash it but you could also just copy the files over. That being said - would this be worthwhile to post?

I wish i had know i could just copy the files over.. that's actually less convoluted process than depending on a script. I thought the reason you made a patch via flashing is because the system files were locked/open by the system. Anyway, i am extremely thankful for this'll as there is no other way to fix the bug without adding extra steps to wake the screen.
You should definitely share both odexed and deodexed patches with others. I personally don't know how i could tollerate that bug for much longer. I'm sure there are others who don't use the lock screen. Plus, this would give a chance for others to appreciate your work by dontating for your time and effort.

The flashable zip is just one method to get the files where they need to go. Literally all it does is overwrite the 2 files in /system/framework by moving the 2 files over from the zip - but there are definitely other ways to do such things. Some are more comfortable with this route, others are more comfortable w/ getting /system to be rw and move the files manually.
I'll likely post this at some point in the next few days

Glad to hear

Is it possible that my phone isn't affected? If its a 4.1.2 bug, it should be in all phones with same version right?
This is not happening to my phone. Whether I have lock screen activated or not. I'm rooted but running stock ROM and I have Nova launcher installed if thats even important.

It's not all notes.

TP2 Is Amazingly Slow..

i just got my touch pro 2, it was used, but it was still new
it still even has the original plastic on the screen.
ever since ive had the phone though, everything on it is really really slow.
opening up a text, sending a text, going back to the home screen, opening up opera, clicking on the notification tab. EVERYTHING is really slow, or has some kind of lag to it. Why is this happening? What can i do to fix it?
This is really bothering me, and im about to trade for another phone because i cant take it. It takes me 5 minutes to send a text message, after i hit the send button.
ANY help is appreciated, thanks!!
First thing you want to check is which ROM is running on the device. Is it stock or a cooked ROM. Which version TP2 do you have? is there a carrier logo on it? The more information you can provide about the hardware/software on the device the better we can help you.
its the stock ROM. Original T-Mobile branded version. Its pretty much new out of the box it seems.
Since you just got it, and someone may have been using it before. i would suggest hard reset first off to remove any junk the previous user may have installed.
ok thats sounds like a good idea, how would i go about it?
(sorry for some of the questions i have been / will be asking, i just came from android to WinMo, so im completely lost)
1. While the HTC Touch Pro 2 is off, press and hold Talk/Send, End and Power until you see a message on the screen about deleting all data.
2. Release the buttons after the message appears.
3. Press the Volume Up button.

The T-mobile stock ROMs do not have push pages and as such I do not believe it makes use of the Dynamic Proxy.
I came from an Android device (briefly, in between my Wizard to Rhodium). The screen itself is different. This may be part of the lag you are experiencing. I actually prefer the WinMo platform over the Droid one, as it feels more responsive and stable to me. My friends however, who have the the G3 or iPhone hate my Rhodium...so again, I suspect that if, after hard booting your device, it still feels laggy, it may be the differences in how the screen responds versus a Droid screen. The Devs here could explain it in much better techie terms than I.
There is a thread here pushing for a Droid port over to the Rhodium, and I sit here scratching my head asking why. I truly believe that much of it is perception, mine being that Android just isn't for me. You may consider checking out that thread and seeing if the port over is any closer to happening.
In the meantime, I have heard that the Energy roms are quite stable and fast, so you may consider flashing one and seeing if maybe your response issues are handled. Be sure to read up on unlocking/flashing your device first so you don't brick it.
I'm sorry I'm not much help here. I do think though that perhaps some of the issue may be the screen...I could be way off base here too, though.
I am testing out the Dymanic Resource Proxy hack to see if it makes any difference to me. Will let you know what i find, so far idling at about 55%
update:
well, i went ahead and did a system restore, it was faster, but still not to my liking, so iwent ahead and flashed a ROM to make one final test. i went ahead a flashed energy ROM, and i have to say, i very much enjoy it now. ALOT faster, much smoother transition between applications, accelrometer works alot better, an overall greatly improved experience.
thanks to everyone that helped me!
one last question though, after flashing the ROM, my ALT key doesn't seem to work. Any fix? i would do a search, but im already typing a response, so i thought i would go ahead and include it here.

[MOD] NFC With the Screen Off

Wow. It's been a long time since I made anything useful. Not being able to use NFC with the screen off has always been a pet peeve of mine with my Nexus, so I figured I'd fix it
This is a modified Nfc.apk, which is the system NFC service that runs at boot. It allows you to scan NFC tags either with the screen totally off, or with the screen on but still at the lockscreen. You get to choose which one you want to flash. Just download one of the zips below, and flash it via recovery (tested with ClockworkMod). To restore to stock, just pick the stock version.
The screen off version means you can ALWAYS scan an NFC tag. Don't have to turn the screen on or anything. Just touch the phone to the tag.
The lockscreen version lets you scan a tag whenever the screen is on, but it doesn't have to be unlocked. You can't scan while the screen is off, but you can just touch the power button to get to the lockscreen and then scan. If you have a passcode, no need to unlock your phone to scan a tag.
This has been compiled against CyanogenMod and tested on my own self-built tree based off CyanogenMod source. There is nothing here that should be specific to that ROM.
Devices
Sprint Galaxy Nexus (toroplus)
Fully working on CyanogenMod based ROMs
Fully functional on most AOKP ROMs. Throws random errors on some, but everything still works.
Not functional on some stock ROMs
GSM Galaxy Nexus (maguro)
Fully working on CyanogenMod based ROMs
Fully functional on most AOKP ROMs. Throws random errors on some, but everything still works.
Not functional on some stock ROMs
Verizon Galaxy Nexus (toro)
Untested as far as I know. If you test it let me know
Should be similar to other Galaxy Nexus SKUs
HTC One X
The user StephanSch has created a version for the One X. Get it in this post.
Only screen off seems to work, not lockscreen.
Don't know if this is for the Qualcomm S4 based One X or the Tegra 3 base. Not sure about carrier versions either.
Samsung Galaxy SIII
The user mayhemer has created a version for the SIII. Get it in this post.
I'm not aware of which version of the SIII this is for, now which ROM. As soon as I have info, I'll update it here.
Nexus S
Reported working from at least one user. Don't know GSM or CDMA version, nor which ROM.
Probably working on any CM9 build for either SKU, and possibly stock or AOKP.
It probably will not work on any manufacturer based skins on any other device.
If you try it on any other device, please let me know how it goes! I'll update the OP with your results!
Also of note, I do not know if this will allow you to use Wallet any differently than you can right now. I don't have any way to test it, and don't personally use Wallet. If you do, let me know whether it works or not so I can update this post!
Liability Disclaimer: As always, I hereby absolve myself of responsibility for any damage you cause to your phone by flashing this. There is inherent risk in modding your device, and by flashing anything in this thread you are taking that risk into your own hands. If something goes wrong, I will try and help, but I am not God.
Source Code Disclaimer: The only code modified here was given under the Apache v2 license. That means that I am not required to release source for this. It is an incredibly simple mod at this point, but I plan on taking it into the next level and creating a patch that makes this an option in settings, rather than a zip you have to flash. I will release source with this, but I want to wait until I clean it up and submit it to the CyanogenMod Gerrit as a full feature, rather than a cheap hack! Sorry if that disappoints anyone, I just wanted to get this out ASAP.
In the meantime, I explain what I'm doing in this post. That should be enough info if you're compiling from source, and might be enough if you are using a Smali edit. If you're critically concerned about it, shoot me a PM or an email and I'll try and help more.
How things stand for Jellybean:
I put this on hold for a while. The further I got into making this a toggleable option in settings, the deeper things ran into the system code. With the big change to Jellybean around the corner, I want to wait until Jellybean becomes the main CM branch so I can avoid the breaks that all the code churn will cause. I'm not done with this, but there's no point in putting the work in to make it fully functional when CM10 is around the corner to break it all. I'll get on it as soon as CM10 becomes closer to release. Before the code freeze for CM10.
In the mean time, @PHtQuE got ahold of me on Twitter and I told him what was happening. I gave him a couple pointers and he got it compiling on Jellybean at the same level it is right now on ICS. I may be wrong, but I believe this is his post right here. Regardless, this is a working screenoff version for JB.
Reserved, just in case...
That will definetly come in good use. Thanks

It's definitely possible. I'm working on getting the option in Settings now, and should have it working by the end of the day. Once there's an option in Settings, it should be super simple to add a notification bar toggle option as well. Haven't messed with that part before, but it's not too dissimilar from WiFi toggling, so I've got code to look at.
I was hoping to get the settings mod done in time to submit it to CM before they started the code freeze for CM9. Well, they went into code freeze this morning so I missed that. I'll still get it submitted ASAP, but don't expect to see it in the initial CM9 official build unless you use the nightlies. I'll of course update everything once I submit the patch and if it gets accepted.

In theory, it should work on any 4.0.4 base ROM, on any NFC device. No guarantees though
This is just what I've been looking for (FOR AGES) I know that it doesn't come like this from stock, due to the potential security risks, but sod it! Lol, i love it.

im curious as to the effect on battery life. how noticeable is the difference?
I think that this is a great feature. But I thought that the reason
the NFC only worked with the screen on and phone unlocked was
a security reason. Meaning someone could not just walk up to
you and scan your phone without you knowing. you would have to
have the phone on for anything to work. I think that the settings
idea is great that way if you want to open then you can have it open
if you want it closed then you can keep it like stock. Great work. Worked
good on my GNexus (Sprint).

I can't speak for the battery life, as my phone is plugged in either for tethering or testing code all day. Shouldn't be too noticeable.

Security is exactly the reason it doesn't come like this by default. It's also why I made two versions. If you're worried about security, then flash the lockscreen version and you have to turn the phone on to be able to scan.
Currently, there is no way that I know of to get anything malicious by scanning against someone's will. It doesn't just offer up credit card numbers when you scan it. If you have NFC Task manager on your phone, someone could scan it and make it start an app you have installed or turn off wifi or something mundane like that, but that's about it. Plus they'd have to get within ~5" of your pocket

It would appear that the One X's Nfc.apk has different hardware support. When I flashed your zip, NFC ReTag couldn't detect NFC hardware any more. And the option for NFC disappeared in Settings. Nothing a restore of the original apk couldn't fix, but it's unfortunate it didn't work.
Any chance you'd be willing to share what edits you made? If it's smali, I can probably tweak the One X's apk to be similar.

It's actually compiled from source. I've never messed with Smali, so I don't know how useful this will be. The easiest way is to tweak a variable called POLLING_MODE in the NfcService class. There are a couple different settings. 3 is the default, 2 works on lockscreen or unlocked, and 1 works with the screen off, at the lockscreen, or unlocked.
I don't think Smali keeps variable or function names, so that might be of no use at all.. The other method, in a function called applyRouting() there are a couple if/else statements that check if the current state matches POLLING_MODE or not. If you take those out, then it should also work although for some reason that only seems to enable it to the lockscreen level.
You should be able to see a copy of the file here, if that helps.

I did not mean anything by my comment, I think that having to turn the phone
on to use it is a bit much. I like that you have the ability to run it form the lock
screen. I understand that right now you really cannot do much with the NFC,
hacker wise, other than changing settings you are not stealing information by
scanning. But being that NFC is still new(ish) I also feel that all the security
holes have not been discovered. I just wanted people to consider every angle.
I still think that you have created a great feature.
I love what I'm seeing here, well done! Can anyone confirm if this breaks Google Wallet functionality?

I've recently updated to Jedi Mind Trick V. 9, I would of posted this in the development thread, but I do not have enough posts.
Every time I install the Xposed Installer and then link to the Tweakbox Module and restart, I constantly get 'process system not responding', I've tried wait before and the phone just restarts anyways.
I have absolutely no idea what could be causing this error, I've done the installation instructions correctly, wipe cache, wipe data, etc.
I'm completely new to this rooting and rom process so go easy on me.
I don't necessarily need the CRT effect from turning screen on and off, but I just would like this answered for anyone else in the future who wants this effect and wondering why this is happening.
If anyone can tell me how to generate an error report of this happening, I would gladly do so.
Thank you for taking your time to read this and I hope anyone can help!
For the most part it is a known issue. It happens to some people and not others for some reason. I experience the same problems most people do when trying to use/install Tweakbox. It also messes with the lock screen and generally locks up the entire phone at times. Maybe someone with more experience will have a better answer but ptmr3, the dev, knows about it. Whether or not he can, or wants to, fix it will remain to be seen.
If it makes you feel any better it most likely is not something you did. If you followed the OP's instructions then you did what you are supposed to do. Sometimes things just don't work the way they should for every device out there.

Absolutely right. There are people that have problems, but I guess I'm
one of the lucky ones, because I used it on all ptmr3's Roms (I'm currently
on The Sith) and it worked flowlessly.
I hope you use TWRP and in that case, maybe re-download the Rom and
do more than the recommended instructions, like if it says "Wipe Cache", then
go ahead and do it 2 times (except flashing the Rom)....and so on....
That's what I do every time and it looks like it works, coz' I never
had any of the regular problems other people have after flashing.

I actually used Clockwork Mod, it's one I'm familiar with. I never used TWRP for rooting.
Not being able to use the CRT effects doesn't bother me that much, I just wanted to find out if something was wrong with my installation or phone... it's good to know it's neither!
Thank you for the advice!
Don't use it.... Tweakbox changes things in the framework and android policy jar along with the systemui that don't match our phone's, You're only asking for issues to pop up everywhere. Best thing to do is flash a theme that's for the rom you're using or do the changes you want to the files in the rom yourself.

ok , its 4.2 stock android. it cant auto rotate my apps menu anymore as well as the clock in the lockscreen , however if i open an app or browser , i am able to rotate it , i wasnot doing anything fishy , just downloaded some apps from google play , normal apps, and never rooted or tried anything on it. it was working fine from last week when i got it.. please tell me about any other thing you may need to know
also tried checking/unchecking the autorotate option , rebooted several times.
I'm bone stock, and neither my app drawer, nor lock screen have ever had rotation, to my knowledge
Cmoore0965 said:
I've never known the app drawer (which I assume you're talking about) to have a landscape mode. In fairness, I never really cared or looked for it, so that could be my own oversight. The clock app, does, however rotate, so I guess you've got an issue. If you flashed, reflash with a clean install. If you're ota, then you're options branch out depending on if you're rooted, and/or your access to custom recovery. Anyone here is going to need more information, though, to help you. Might start with your current firmware, and method of installing it.

ok actually its pure stock , nothing tweaked , iwas planning to but now after this problem ,i dont know
Lol I'm not used to such quick responders on threads, I apologize for my edits and timing. You're first response posted while I was typing. Like I amended my post to say, I've never known this phone to have that function on stock, and mine definitely don't since I've checked just now. We're they rotating before you updated to 4.2?

oh ok, i just figured it out , it was basically almost new for me, not much data on it , so i did a factory reset and now the lock screen clock working fine, i guess u rite about app drawer. could wait lol
could you please tell me th best method to root and unlock, as their are so many methods, and then wha are the next possibilities.
Best method to root is a mildly interesting debate around here lol depends on your comfort level with simple adb commands, and a little footwork to find the drivers to do it manually, or your comfort in little understanding of one stop shop toolkits. The toolkits are pretty reliable, and the only discouragement I've heard against them is the fact that you don't have to learn what going on to achieve your goal. The manual method isn't difficult either, you'll have to set up the proper drivers, and sdk on your computer, and use an extremely simple series of commands utilizing fast boot. Either path to root can be found in the stickies around here, and I've only given a very fast a loose overview of the processes lol but keep an open mind, follow the instructions to the letter, and they're both easily attainable
As for further possibilities passed unlock and root, there's always the hunt for your favorite rom, there's extremely useful scripts you can run to modify particular necessities for your experience or shortcomings you may find, there's even guides on compiling your own stuff if you're particularly taken by this wide world of amazing android user control lol you can do whatever you want, buddy. If you've got the time, the selfless dev, mod, and member community here has almost certainly posted how to get it done

[Q] Complete Action Using?

Some times when I try to open an apk, movie, etc., I get:
COMPLETE ACITON USING
(SELECT APK)
ALWAYS JUST ONCE
When I select the Apk
I select Always
Then I get the display:
CLEAR DEFAULT
OK
I select OK and that apk opens.
My question is even though I selct ALWAYS and CLEAR DEFAULT OK it never stays as the default even when I don't restart/reboot.
Is there some way I can associate an APK with a specific action/ext, etc.?
Apparently there is no solution for this? Thanks for viewing it.

I see where 119 people have viewed this posting.
Has anyone else found this to be the same on their Note 2 as I described?
This is really something that I think is annoying. Why can't the Note 2 OS accept that a specific ext. is always opened by a specific apk?
Would really like some opinions on this.
Thanks!
On my note if I choose always, it gives me information how to clear defaults and next time I open that kind of file it starts choosen app without asking.

You are not alone. I had flashed handful of TW based roms on my Note 2 and this always occurs so I live with it. I am on Tweaked rom now and aside from this irritating flaw, it's perfect. I was a flashoholic and Tweaked rom cured me. I hope there is a fix but if not no big deal.
Edit: I had just cleared defaults for all user apps and tested and it works! OP and Dwitherell, I apologize for posting before testing. I had this issue for so long I always select "once" automatically.

Really...? Interesting. So no matter what the situation is, if you pick an app to act as default for something (like clicking a link have a particular browser used to open it) that default is not saved? If you go into Application Manager and go to the app you believe you set as default that is not behaving as such, is there an option to clear defaults there? Just curious - I have yet to experience such an inability to set defaults. I wonder if there is a common factor that is interfering in some way here. Do either of you have xposed framework installed? I remember there was one out there that let you choose the interface for selecting default apps (the jellybean/stock style or the ICS-based style) - perhaps that is causing an issue...? I'm really just stabbing in the dark here, I have little in the way of clues as to why the default selection is not sticking.
Been working on a solution for days. Thanks to all of you who have posted.
However, even when I rest defaults by going into:
Settings>Application Manager>Reset App preference (which will reset all preferences for: Disabled apps, Disabled app notifications, Default applications for acttions, Background data restrictions for apps.)
>Reset apps.
Then I go into a specific application and check to see if (Launch by Default is set) there are - no defaults set.
Tried this many times and it still has not solved the prolem.
I am running Stock Android version 4.1.2, Baseband version T889UVBMD1, Kernal vdersion 3.0.31-935627, Build number JZO54K T889UVBMD1.
Any other suggestions? Glad to hear I am not the only one who is experiencing this. It is very annoying.

I just posted how I cleared defaults for all user apps. Did you do yours the same way? If not, how did you do it? I cannot get it to work for me.

It works on Tweaked rom. I didn't apply any fix cuz like you I couldn't find any fix. For a long period of time I lived with this annoying problem. It didn't occur to me to try clear defaults and test to see if it works until I saw Dwithrell's post. I believed only my phone had this problem. I highly recommend trying Tweaked rom after you back up. If you decide you don't like it, you can always restore back. On my Note 2, I installed Tweaked rom, Alexia's Theme, Perseus Kernel, Viper Audio, and Crossbreeder. If you need links, I post them for you.

Thanks for your help. However, I have flashed many ROMs in the past and never really found much value in doing so. always the possibility of bricking your phone. From what I read lately about flashing Note 2 ROMs there are risks which I don't think I want to take. Your opinion?

My 1st smartphone was Samsung Galaxy S1 Captivate. I was glued to Captivate Android Developement forum and flashed many roms, kernels, modems, and mods and tweaks. There were always risks and anything I had flashed then had problems. Nothing was satisfying. So, I would turn to the xda forums to seek fixes. It was a never ending cycle. Then I got my Note 2. The cycle started again. All the roms, kernels, and mods had issues. TW roms were more stable than AOSP based so I only flashed TW based roms. I wanted to try Tweaked rom when I first saw it but reading the first page was intimidating. I didn't want to come close to bricking my Note 2 like I have with Captivate. It's pain in the butt to fix and very time consuming. Finally after getting courage to flash Tweaked rom, I am glad I did. I still have the itch to flash different roms when update is available, I don't. Except tweaked rom update. It's stable and every feature that I use my Note 2 for works and works great. Tweaks the tweaked rom offers, correct color display by Perseus kernel, beautiful theme by Alexia, awesome sound by Viper when it works( still asking to install driver once in a while but worth it), and network tweaks from CrossBreeder makes an AWESOME and STABLE combinations. Stock is good and stable but once you take a leap and decide to try custom, try my combinations. They are STABLE and BETTER than stock. Lastly, I want to thank all the developers in XDA putting their time and effort into the deveolpement.

Thanks for the info. I just found an app that supposedly will ROOT any Android phone. It is called KINGO Android Root. I have downloaded it and will try it tomorrow to root my Note2. Wondering if anyone has tried this with any luck?

FYI - Just completed my Root and it took ~ 3 minutes. I know it is rooted since I can now use Titanium Backup Pro.
