Got my ZL today... - Sony Xperia ZL

...and will send it back tomorrow.
It's a pity, the display is even worse than my 2 year old LG optimus speed, and I'm not talking about the viewing angles. Colours are washed out far more as expected, the icons look terrible compared to my old phone. I tried to calibrate the display as mentioned somwhere here, didn't get better.
Besides the display the vibration sucks. I like typing text with a little vibration, but ZL is far too loud. I cant't feel vibration, I just hear it.
I wanted a new phone to make a step forward, but not in this direction...
Damn,I'm really disappointed, I thought this is THE phone for me...
So goodbye sony community!

I am planning to get the white one, then see your post.I've experienced the same screen color issue with The Xperia T

I think you mean realistic display rather than over saturated crap that's on most phones. I actually find the display
Temperature with the styling quite mature and refreshing.
The vibration needs some tweaking but it's not a deal breaker.

Vibration can be set to low there's an option in the menu, seems like you never liked the zl from the start. Most of things you are complaining can be fixed, well except the viewing angles

I find it comical that members feel the need to open a new thread only to voice their displeasure. Thanks for your opinion and best of luck with whichever device you obtain next. I wish I had such trivial things to fixate on as vibration sensation.

I had a previous unit where the vibration was loud it made a very cheap sound. I eventually replaced the unit due to a bad camera everything was noisy. My new unit is much better, the vibration is no longer strange in any way. Maybe some bad units going around.

Lol... yes, that's why i bought it...

Do you mean the colors are washed out head on? If thats the case, then you should try getting a different unit. My screen looks really good. Its only when you tilt it does the screen wash out real quick. It sucks and detracts the quality of the phone, but the pros of the ZL far outweigh something which wont matter to me as i rarely look at the screen from an angle.
As for the vibration, I didn't notice yet before you mentioned it. But yes, it does seem a little weak.

I got my phone like 3 days ago, not having any issues with it. Screen looks great while watching videos or playing games. I don't need that blue tint or any of those oversaturated crap.

Yep, thats why I absolutely detest AMOLED screens! However, no reason Sony couldnt have put in a LCD that looks as good as the One X. The screen on that phone is spectacular

+1, no need for a new thread.. if it was an in-depth review that's another story...

up to the user
I just read this thread now and I agree good luck to you on whichever phone you like and hopefully it is all you want it to be.
I have now gotten into a seemingly 6 months or less cycle before I decide to try something new...ugh
The only thing I have to say is having an unlocked phone is so much better as you are not tied into the cell providers Android update cycle (if they want it) and their bloatware.
One more thing, having had a note I am not a fan in general of the crazy colore on the AMOLED screens.
As it is it is a feeling - I just love my ZL (and my Nexus 4 is going bye bye - I do have a Nexus 10)

As compare to Nexus 4,How is looking your Xperia ZL Colors(I'm not asking about viewing angle), is it possible to Put Stock Android in Zl if yes anyone try it,How the experience feel with stock?

hmm
Those over saturated screens make the screen look amazing. Why did you guys choose to get an xperia? I'd rather get the s4 because its easier to root and plus there's always a ton of ROMs for it

I like Sony for their design. If samsung would change the design from plastic to something better then I wouldn't mind buying one from Samsung. The phone feel too light and like holding a toy in your hand...

The colors seem very comparable, neither phone has over-saturated colors. The ZL screen is gorgeous, but if you are looking for a deal, the Nexus is it for 350.

Screen tech is a matter of personal choice. Those over saturated colors give me a raging headache if i look at the screen for a long time, i.e playing games, watching movies. I dont know how exactly to put this but LCD screens just LOOK more sophisticated and toned down. Uhh, like a printed sheet of paper. Unlike AMOLED which looks like a kindergarten kid went wild with crayons on the screen.
And Samsung phones easier to root? Building ROMS for them are a PITA. Ask every single dev who has completely abandoned Samsung phones. there might be plenty of ROMs sure, but all of them have some or the other problem. Not to mention the fact that Samsung are a bunch of liars.

Completely agree, here. I came to the ZL from nothing but Samsung phones (Captivate, Galaxy Nexus, SGS3), and I much prefer the ZL's screen to any Samsung phone screen. For one, I can never read Sammy screens when outdoors on a cloudless sunny day, even with the brightness at maximum. I have had no issues reading the ZL screen in the same conditions, which I'll take over better viewing angles and oversaturated colors any day. As for comparing to LG screens, well, if I'm not mistaken, LG also makes amoled screens, so I wouldn't expect much different than Sammy screens there -- last I checked, the two were suing each other over the technology. The ZL compared to the N4 -- I must say, I finally saw an N4 in person this past weekend, and the screen on it is quite beautiful. I still like my ZL, though, and the lack of LTE radios in the N4 makes it a non-issue for me, no matter how pretty the phone might be (and I'm not keen on a glass back anyways).
I do agree that it would have been great had Sony used something as nice as the LCD in the One X, though. That screen was amazing looking (I had the pleasure of seeing one in person when my brother had a One X for awhile).
Good luck to the OP in finding a device that meets those expectations -- the ZL is the first AT&T LTE capable unlocked phone to hit the USA, and that's a big part of why it intrigued me, too. I suspect it'll be awhile before there's another device like that ...

[Sprint] - Time for upgrade. GSIII a worthy upgrade? Or hold off...

I am due for an upgrade, now. I am coming from an OG EVO. I have not been keeping up with phones lately. Obviously this is a GSIII sub forum, so I am expecting biased answers. I asked a few other places as well.
Check out a couple of in depth reviews.
If your going Android. (which i presume is why you asked) you will not find a better device. The only one that comes close would be the HTC ONE X, But no expandable memory, removeable battery, etc.

Depends on your preferences... the two obvious choices would be the GSIII or Evo 4g Lte...
I used the Evo for a few days before getting the GSIII and the deciding factor was pretty much the poor multi tasking and the lack of a removable battery on the Evo. It does boast a superior display imo and a slightly better camera. I find I'm getting the same battery life on my GSIII probably a little more. I would suggest going to a store and use both for a few minutes, you should be somewhat familiar with HTC sense but Touchwiz isn't that horrible.

I thought the Galaxy line was notorious for having AWESOME screens. You're telling me that the EVO LTE's LCD2 is actually slightly better?
How do these screens compare to the Iphone 4s?
I don't own a GSIII..I'm really just here to see how LTE is looking for GSIII users in Dallas. I own a EVO LTE and here's what I got for ya
iphony is right . Multitasking is a little off...meaning, you go from the browser to the music app and the music app reloads. Go back to the browser and the browser reloads. Kinda annoying. The update for the phone kinda fixed it but not really.
Dev scene isn't as great so you're really gonna have to be satisfied for how the phone is right off the ****. The devs have managed to fix the multitasking issue but I don't know to what extent. I'm still on stock and I'm happy with it.
The screen is pretty damn sweet. I came from an iPhone 4S and I haven't really noticed a difference. Still seems like a retina display to me, just a bigger screen.
The big plus for me is the beats audio EQ...because that EQ plus switching the beats audio mode to urBeats puts the audio quality on par with the iPhone. Audio sounds real good.
Other than those things...you'll probably get the same experience. It all comes down to the little things the phones do that you like- so you're really just gonna have to play with both them.

I saw you posted this a minute or so before mine so I'll just repeat what I wrote..
going from the 4s to the EVO...it felt exactly the same. It seems just like the retina display..the only difference I can see with my eye is screen size. So it's pretty much a bigger iPhone 4s screen. It's gorgeous. Unfortunately I have my phone in an otterbox so the quality is degraded
And another thing about the screens...
The 4s, idk what it uses for its screen, but you don't need a screen protector. There is 0 smudging...it's like it cleans itself or something. The EVO 4G LTE is not like that. idk about the GSIII...I've yet to get my hands on one.

The screens are both great, the screen on the evo just stands out more to me, while the GSIII has a more natural looking colors. That being said I went with the GSIII because it's a better overall phone and I tend to prefer Samsung phones, but a few things on the Evo did make it a hard decision.

The S III uses a pentile display, meaning images aren't as sharp as the Evo's and you'll see some pixelation or the "pentile effect" if you have good eyes. The E4GLE's display has warmer and more "realistic" colors than the S III's "saturated" and cooler colors. It's also a little sharper and you can't see the pixels, or at least I couldn't. I also found that the S III's screen was a lot dimmer in sunlight than the Evo's.
That said, I still stuck with my S III because of the massive development that will happen in the coming months.
As for the iPhone comparison you would have to get that from someone else, not my cup of tea.

The EVO LTE screen is sharper but the GS3 has all the benefits of amoled displays (darker blacks, beautiful colors). The EVO LTE is also going to be hard to put custom software (roms) on because it's bootloader is locked and any exploits are patched.

Love my gs3...but screens...lmao...
LCD kicks any version of amoleds ass all day long.
You can make the "oooh but the blacks are so much better ...." well that's great but everything else is garbage.
Don't get me wrong performance wise the gs3 is full of win, and fanboys will start whining how they like the galaxy screens, but there's not even a fair comparison as the lcd2 is far superior to any Samsung screen.
The fact of the matter is the htc rezound STILL has the best screen of any of any phone on the market. Slcd2 screen of the 1x comes close.
Sammy is so far behind in screen technology its ... strange.
BUT I will say the gs3 is a different and refined version of the samoled screens and its tolerable.
People who say the gs3 screen is better don't have a clue, and obviously its merely a personal preference, and not based on facts.
S-amoled(yes even pluss) is VERY saturated, whites are just omg horrible.
Also this gives the false pretense of how your images are from the camera.( which btw is neck and neck with one x)
BUT the pros out weigh the cons and the gs3 IMO is the best phone on the market.
If htc ups the aentie , which it appears they might I will probably go back.
But .... its iffy.
No removable battery
No removable storage...
Deal breaker for me
I really like having tons of development, and everyone here is pretty cool. Although I'm sure ill be called a troll for my truth about the screen FACTS. RRAAWWWRRRR!!!!

Much to the dismay of the salesperson I spent literally two hours playing with the Evo 4G and the SGS3 side-by-side at the local Sprint store a week or so ago, and this after reading every review and comparison I could find. Choosing between the two was VERY tough IMO. I ultimately went with the SGS3 and couldn't be happier.
Re; the screen being better on one versus the other... I think it largely comes down to your eyes. I've personally always loved the AMOLED screens, exaggerated colors and all, but my eyes aren't what they used to be so for me that brightness and saturation is actually a big plus. When I compared the two phones side-by-side I frankly couldn't tell the difference for the most part. It seemed like in some apps one would be a little better, and in some it was the other way around. Also, the whole pentile thing with the SGS3- again, my eyes being what they are, I can't resolve the pixels at all anymore no matter how much I squint, so for me that's a complete non-factor.
In terms of performance, all I know for sure is that the SGS3 is without question the smoothest experience I've ever had on any Android phone. The HTC seemed perfectly comparable though. I've seen various benchmarks that put one on top of the other (and then other benchmarks that reverse things) so, to me, you're probably talking about a relative wash here.
Build quality and feel.. .this one is weird because I've seen a few people saying the SGS3 feels cheap and not made well and that doesn't match my opinion at all. Yes, the chassis is plastic, but it feels like quality to me. There's definitely no bowing or creaking or any of that stuff. It feels solid and well-made to me for sure. Oh, and FYI, mine has been dropped from roughly 4 feet on a kitchen floor already with no ill effect, and no case or anything, so at least to a fist approximation it's sturdy (hopefully I don't test it any more than that! LOL) The HTC also feels like a quality device. Again, to my sense I'd call it a wash. The SGS3 I believe is a little thinner and lighter, which I sometimes find myself wishing it weren't, but most of the time not. The HTC does have that little kickstand, which is a nice plus, but come on, I don't know too many people that would consider that a deciding factor either way.
I like having the replaceable batter for sure, that's always a nice thing. Historically I've used extended batteries in my phone so a replaceable battery is required, but I'll tell you, my SGS3 has so far given me stellar battery life and it doesn't seem necessary. Still, nice to have the option. Similarly, being able to swap in a bigger SD card is nice too (although I have everything I can imagine ever wanting on my phone and it's only half-filling my 32Gb card so I'm probably done there... if the 32Gb model had been available at the time I would have gotten that and just not used a card frankly).
Samsung has also, in my opinion, done a good job augmenting Android without wrecking it. TouchWiz isn't terrible, but I don't run it myself... but aside from the launcher, some of the added features they've given us are nice. Sure, some are a bit gimmicky, and some aren't winners, but there's more good than bad, and they've done it without diverging immensely from stock Android. I say kudos for Samsung this time around, I think they nailed it and haven't gone too far either way. Some will still prefer a stock ICS experience of course, and I hear ya on that, I was running Cyanogen on my Epic before I got my SGS3, but in this case I don't at all mind and in fact LIKE the changes.
One other consideration is that historically Samsung has been pretty slow getting Android updates out to us (partly them, partly carriers fault). We don't know if that will be the case this time around, although I think it's worth noting that we've had already two OTA updates on Sprint so far I believe. Yes, minor updates, but still, that's in only a few weeks' time. I think this bodes well that Samsung may be set to do a much better job getting us our updates faster than in the past. Remember, they managed a nearly simultaneous multi-carrier release for the first time and have a top seller on their hands, I suspect they may not want to ruin that momentum getting us Jelly Bean at a minimum sooner than later. HTC, on the other hand, has historically been good with updates, better than Samsung certainly, so that's something to consider.
I think the bottom line, what I concluded in the store that day anyway, was that I was probably going to be very happy no matter which I chose. They're both great devices. Is the SGS3 worthy? Abso-fraggin'-lutely! Is there a better choice? Possibly, but it's a tough, tough call IMO.

But this is their first flagship that has the same hardware and build across all US carriers. And they also threw in 2GB to "future proof" it for Jelly Bean, so Samsung is definitely getting serious.

The Amoled of this phone is a step back from the Super Amoled Plus which I believe was a choice by Samsung made for ease of manufacture. I read something along those lines. Plus, on the home screen espescially, the screen if dimmer than what Galaxy line users are used to. The European version already got an update to address this issue, who knows when it will arrive over here. The dimness issue is fine for browsers and other applications that you are able to set individually. Of course I can't find it now, but there is a tips and tricks thread that lists it. I love this phone but I won't lie, it is fragile. Already dropped mine just 2 1/2 feet and the screen shattered to hell. I was on my way to buy a cover when it happened. Plastic bezel recessed below screen level offering no protection at all unlike my old Vibrant. That phone could take a tumble. Definitely worth to buy, but select you cover in advance!!!
I like my GS3 so far its a smooth phone! But My reception just flat out sux and I live right in the middle of dallas! There is a few bugs like the brightness sliding thing with the pull down and worst of all when im on google and I go to type in a search and the predictive searches show up below, it will let me touch it but it wont load! I HATE THAT!!! It was either this phone now or wait another 6 months! Soooo...
I just wanna know when we step into the present and recieve LTE like we are paying for!

I shall attempt to be polite.. but it's not an opinion, regarding brightness. It is objective. Yes you may prefer an AMOLED Screen. But the fact is, it's much, much dimmer. Compare EVO or HOX by S III Screen. S III is half as bright. Then of course PenTile on S III is blurry. And Black crush was visible to me in 5 seconds...all details of gray are lost. THen there are the tints, ink marks, etc. But again the worst thing is how DIM it is. S III is half as bright as a droid. Pathetic!
I am going to use my S III for 14 days. I don't think I will be keeping it though. For me anyway, AMOLED is just crap. And the bright colors? I'm sure they could do that with a filter on LCD too. It's a gimmick. Oh gee, Sammy cranked saturation. They mucked with the color table. Gee how clever Samsung. Anyone could do that. It causes Black Crush and colors are simply not accurate.
Not impressed. At all. S III Screen:: SUCKS.
So return it then, nobody is gonna line up behind you and do the same.

Brightness Uniformity of Note 2 Display.

When you go into LCD Test (*#0*#), I notice that the brightness is not really all that uniform on the display. If I bring the device close to my face I see the brightness as same and when I extend the phone further away from I can see a little difference of brightness (very minute difference; extremely hard to tell unless you play with the different brightness modes). To appreciate the difference you need to squint your eyes. Am I trying to be too nit-picky?
Okay, my eyes are playing with me; just washed my eyes and everything looks normal, what AMOLED should look like, early mornings, lol :silly:

yeah seems you're trying really hard to find any imperfections. "extremely hard to tell, play with brightness modes, squint eyes etc"
should i do this under a full moon or candle light?
i usually stay away from these threads but just found all the conditions you mentioned funny. just use your phone under normal conditions. i havent noticed a single flaw... cause im not looking & digging for them.
you have three threds open discussing screens, mura & audio problems... seems like maybe you're trying to convince yourself or others about something?
EDIT: Four threads.... Refurbished phone
Perhaps, I know I paid too much, and finding flaw's like these shouldn't be so easy. I mean, I've been through '3' Note 2 already, currently on my 3rd Note 2, and am I trying to mend my relationship with the Samsung Company, especially after facing more or less similar experiences on the S2 and Note 1. I know my AMOLED display is fine, but physical things like chrome-paint finish, and elevated home button are things I really hoped Samsung would improve their quality-control on; pretty soon, they will loose business as a result of this. I made threads not only to share my insight, but to also have an open discussion about everything I have come across with the Note 2. Not surprising, many have seemed to confirm the same things that I see. So, I'm just joining the bandwagon and moving along. :good:
I think I'm going blind because im very satisfied with screen on my note or maybe I'm not that picky. I be happy if it last next 2-3 years or until my next impuls buy.

(Q) Is display really as bad as people make it out to be?

Hello,
I'm very interested in buying an unlocked ZL, but the only thing that has me thinking twice is the display. Almost every review I've read mentions that the ZL has terrible viewing angles, and the contrast isn't very good.
I'm coming from a Nexus 4, and the viewing angles on it are great. The contrast isn't the best, but I'm not expecting AMOLED black levels here.
So, I just thought I'd check in here and hopefully get a response or two from people who actually own the phone. It's either this or Oppo Find 5, but this one will have tons more support. Thanks in advance!

Why dont you try going through a few threads here? You'll have your answer.
Short answer: Viewing angles worse than N4 even though overall screen quality is much better. If you have a habit of looking at your phones obliquely, dont buy the ZL.
I just went to a Sony store to check it out in person, I really think the display is not bad at all. you should definitely go to the store to see it on person, I am planning to get it once it will be on sale this coming week.

I got my zl 6506 for three days now
my old one is sony lt29i first time compare to my lt29i
it looks not very bright not colorfully but after couple days
it looks not bad at all I don't know how to say it but for me
I can accept and very good device
I have had mine for 3 weeks and I think the screen is great. Viewing angles are not great, but in my daily use and in my personal opinion the screen looks great. I don't look at my screen from odd angles so it is never an issue for me. Webpages and YouTube videos look fantastic

I personally look the device at local Market, some of Bad issue with the screen is or May be we can say Bad-luck of Sony is that the Software UI Background Color is Grey & its not in Black color, it's the main reason the screen is not looking good & everyone judge it as a washout screen,If we change the theme of Xperia Z the Screen looking Good at All.so I think its same for ZL too.
So viewing Angle are still not good as in IPS panel are, but remember the viewing angle issue is raised in just the Case of Xperia Z/ZL Cause Sony using the same TFT panel in all of their Smartphones & since than No one Complain or Raise even about A bit for the viewing angles,
Xperia T/TX are using same TFT screen Panel but no one said in their reviews that the Viewing angles are Bad & are Washout. But there is actually need to Point out the issue because poeple Spend A lot of their Hard erning Money & in result they don't Get the good thing.
In the Same sense with our TVs Picture Settings in Our Family member Set it to Vivid, some one came(suppose Papa) and set it too Standard & you like Soft or any of Factory settings given in Picture Mode of your TV.
so the point is that the Everyone have their own Preference for the Colors & look on something.
Although we all Admit that Sony should Put the IPS Panel screen in their High End Smartphone, there is no Lag or Cons in Xperia ZL either than of slightly viewing angle, Because in Some situations we must have need for Viewing Angles(not all the time), In that condition the screen Fade out is really a shame for the owner of device as well Sony too because we having a High end smartphone and the screen is Fading in some conditional bloody angles.
I'm saying again there is no any Smartphone which is Perfect in All of their Aspects.
Htc having Heavy software,as well the Htc oneX+ is A issue with its wifi by manufacture, Some People Blaming Sony for their Late Updated Schdule for Software, But remember & check the Htc is having same thing with Software updating schedule, and Samsung having their own bloatwares type software in their mobiles. The Clean and Best nearly Stock Android you Can found in Xperia Z/ZL Smartphone in Form of Jelly Bean (4.1.2).
Also the App "screen Calibration" is putted in Xperia ZL for screen Adjustment by user Preference.
Mostly the chance is that the Latest Software May set all of the issue Regarding our Concerns.
Go in your Nearly Store & check for yourself the screen how its looking to you, leave that how its looking to another person.
God Bless you
I've been using the C6506 since April 3rd and I can honestly say that I *really* love the display. Calibrating with the WB app really helped and everything looks really sharp. I couldn't care less about the viewing angles, because honestly, how many times do I really need to look at the phone off-angle? I moved from an iPhone 5 for this phone and it's far, far better.

[Q] ridiculous screen wake lag

This issue is present in both sony models (xperia Z & ZL). I put my ZL side by side with my old at&t branded DUAL CORE galaxy s3, a nexus 4 (same exact processor), an iphone 5, and an at&t branded htc one.... my brand new crazy expensive ZL takes WAY longer to wake up from sleep then ALL OF THEM. Every one of these phones had a BIG LEAD over my phone. How is there not a thread about this already? When I saw my old GS3 woke up way faster I was sad.... but when I saw how fast the htc one screen woke up I was straight up embarrassed. What are the odds this issue will be resolved? Developers on this forum are very capable and willing to work hard but to an extent. With so much stiff competition I have to ask how many developers will invest their time into even looking into this issue. I have tried every rom/kernel available to me at the moment to no avail. I have tried changing every setting and even eliminated the lock screen... no change. I tried raising the min. cpu speed... nothing.
To make matters worse every single one of the phones I compared my ZL to had better viewing angles and a brighter screen then the POS screen sony decided to cheap out on and stick in this phone. WHAT IS THE POINT OF HIGH PPI IF I CANT SEE ANYTHING ON THE SCREEN UNLESS I HAVE MY PROTRACTOR OUT TO MAKE SURE IM LOOKING AT THE EXACT RIGHT ANGLE. Sony should give you a free protractor key chain with the purchase of this phone I heard about this in reviews but never took it seriously because I didnt realize the extent of the issue. If I look at my phone just slightly off angle the colors are washed out and if its sitting on the table and im looking down on it from my desk the screen is 50% washed out and some colors are muted.
I hear the htc one x had the same wake lag issues and it was resolved via a software update. I wonder if we will be so lucky....
Anyone have any idea or solution to get rid of or at the very least lessen this extremely irritable wake lag?? Let me know !!
My phone doesn't have this issue, the wakeup time is almost immediate and is faster or on par with the phones you mention. This has been tested out of the box and rooted/unlocked bootloader/custom ROM. As far as the viewing angles go, why don't you visit one of e the 3095809385092385028365275829 threads already talking about this?

REALLY? What model ZL are you using and what kernel and rom???? mine is the C6506 with an unlocked boot loader. Would it be possible for you to upload a comparison video with one of the aforementioned phones (or different ones of the same caliber) with a lock screen wake up test?? If you dont have a one to compare it to even a sample video of waking it up from deep sleep and also a regular wake up would be awesome. thanks in advance man I hope I can crack this problem
No such wake lag on my ZL (C6502) either. Stock rooted rom (.434) with locked BL. Screen wakes up almost instantaneously on mine (just like on my previous Xperia S). I did have a lag of about 2 sec while waking my Note2 (N7100) though. Didn't compare it to htc one or S4 but i'm sure it wouldn't be any laggier on my ZL (shall compare tomorrow when S4 arrives at stores locally here). Maybe you could upload a comparison video showing the said wake lag, if you can't then never mind. Btw, this issue seems specific to your device since nobody else here has any such complaints. So, try a factory reset, if already done then a repair using PCC/SUS. If all this doesn't work out then send it in for replacement under warranty!
About screen, I think ZL screen is stunning! It is very crisp & rather accurate to colours than say SAMOLED screens imo. I like it more than my previous Note2 screen, esp browsing webpages is like night n day! Text appears much crisper on ZL screen no matter how small it is! Viewing angles are never great on sony screens (but not too bad either), and I don't mind that, given the screen is second to none head on! If you judge the screen quality by the viewing angles (like bazillion reviewers out there) then i'm afraid Sony ZL is a wrong choice to begin with! Btw, I have no issues reading text, browsing web, viewing images/videos (with mBE2 on) with the ZL screen placed on table or bed beside me (from an angle of say 45 degrees to 135 degrees). There is a thread regarding it in the ZL general section too (many others in the XZ forums).
P.S: Having said that, I would love to see an ips panel on a sony smartphone!
you can close the thread I am the only one with the problem and IM returning this lemon I got to newegg for a full refund. I was trying to decide whether I wanted a refund or replacement and I put this thing next to my old dell streak that i bought for 220 bucks TWO YEARS AGO.... they both have 5 inch sceens... it was honestly pathetic. THE DISPLAYS LOOKED ALMOST THE SAME. No wonder the htc one threads in the xda forum have hundreds of thousand of views and the ZL doesnt have more then 10,000 in one thread. if your on the fence thinking about buying this phone... this is strictly my opinion but.... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DONT DO IT. god bless newegg, they waived the restocking fee because my phone was defective and im getting a full refund. My ZL may have sucked but you guys were a big help. Thanks for your input dudes, I would not have known my ZL was defective if it wasnt for your posts.

by the way.. I have been a sony fan my whole life and still am..... every tv i have ever purchased EVER was a sony. and they have all had good viewing angles ... and as far as cell phones go if you compare this cell phone to ANY OTHER ONE in its price range they ALL have great viewing angles. I laughed when I read that comment about sony and bad viewing angles because your screen is probably manufactured by sharp. hell it might as well say SHARP instead of sony on the phone.

Sorry, but I didn't quite get what your post was about. Just for clarification when I said "sony screens" in my previous post, I was implying the displays on sony smartphones (which I thought was obvious as we are here at xda forums & not TV forums ). I am well aware that the Sony ZL has sharp display, and fyi the HTC One too has displays sourced from sharp/Samsung.
Well, I think I don't need to be a fan to appreciate a good screen! I appreciate your opinion & concern about bad viewing angles on ZL, but as I've said before it isn't an issue for me, so I hope you appreciate mine.
P.S. Btw, the other day I played with the GS4 and I still find the ZL screen better especially with regards to web browsing (better whites & crisper letters) & daylight legibility (better brightness perhaps). I still might end up buying it just for fun, or maybe NOT .

Should i get this phone?

Yeah we all heard about the screen quality issues and stuff, But is it really that bad? I would love to get one coming from the og pixel xl. But do you guys recommend me getting one?
I got a P2XL 64BG black to replace my 1st Gen Pixel 128GB and overall I'm happy with my purchase. That's not to say the display is perfect, I do have the blue shift when I look at it sideways and I also don't really like the bland colors. I haven't had any issues with burn-in yet though I did install the 8.1 beta to make sure that the soft keys don't burn in. That said Google increasing the warranty to 2 years, the beta dims the soft keys and Google is promising a software update that will offer a more saturated color scheme.....so between what Google has done and are in process of doing I am not really too concerned about the display issues. Display aside it's a great phone, it doesn't get warm like my Pixel did, it's very fast, smooth, great battery life and the 3 years of OS updates is a great perk. I can't speak for anyone else but I am happy with my purchase and will be keeping my P2XL. The best advice I can offer is what others have said in other threads, go to a store and check one out for yourself then decide.
It rocks. Get it.
i love my phone. im coming from the OG pixel
all the negative reviewers are just dumb imho
I highly recommend it for fun on XDA! But it's your decision...
I love the phone too. Only grip is the fingerprint reader. Finger needs to be dry & clean. Otherwise it won't work well.
Go for it. I upgraded to P2XL from Nexus 6

I have had mine for nearly two weeks and it is absolutely stunning. Yeah I have a bit of the blue shift (to be expected on most OLED displays) that I don't mind at all, haven't seen much burn-in at all but have moved over to immersive mode via ADB until they release some additional screen fixes/improvements to try and help with it, haven't seen any black smearing whatsoever, etc. In regards to the bland colors, Google announced saturation mode that I imagine will come with the December release? This will be x amount more than the current vibrant mode or whatever it is, I believe it is +10%+, not certain on how much more saturation mode will be, if you dig more vibrant colors and all. I actually prefer, the more true-looking, duller colors but do have vibrant mode turned on (not much of noticeable difference), will play around with "saturation mode" once available but will likely stick with the duller look, saturation mode may be good for video viewing/editing and watching movies/videos.
Like the first poster said, the phone is great, does not get warm, incredibly fast and feels buttery smooth, the battery life is phenomenal, 2 years of warranty and 3 years of OS updates. Could not be happier. I almost got 50 hours out of my phone the other day, probably would have but needed to head out so wanted to throw it on charger, ended up charging it at 7% and about 48 hours off charger, granted I barely had screen on (4 hours) as it was a busy weekend where I didn't need my phone much but all in all very impressed as I have quite possibly every little battery sucker turned on on the phone. I did do some GPSing, lots of music, texting, some snapchatting, lots of Twitter feeds loading, etc. but I'd say mostly light to moderate use, impressed nonetheless.
In the end, it is your choice but I could not be happier with my purchase and would do it all over again, had I known about screen issues upfront.
EDIT: I take back the saturation mode coming in December release.....it is here and available in the November release. I will post screens to a different thread and can provide a link to it later but just thought I'd let you all know.

Yes
Disregarding screen issues that don't even bother me personally. The colors I know will be fixed either by Google or of not with root and custom kernele we will be able to fix that. The phone is amazing. If you do paranoid about the screen stop at a Verizon location and look at it even if you don't have verizon, but I don't recommend buying in through Verizon! :highfive:
I've had mine almost 2 weeks and really haven't found any reason to not love it.
I did a comparison of the screen / blue tint HERE if you want to see a bunch of side by side comparisons.
But honestly, like I've told everyone who's asked: get one, keep it a week, use it play with it, run it through your daily use, and then make the call to keep it or return it.
Nearly every aspect of liking a device is subjective to each person's individual likes and tastes.
I'd hate to see you cheat yourself out of a great device because someone else said it sucked, or had this flaw.
Get it. If you hate it, or just can't get over the blue tint, return it and move on
No one knows better than YOU what you'll like.
If you have to ask, then the answer is NO!
The device is only for self-minded individuals.
If you like a good screen then no

False statement. The update only sorted the colours... More saturation. Most of the issues are hardware. It's not just a few batches. You don't have to be picky to not be happy with the issues...at the high price too. It's been proven the LG p oled in most cases is sub par

Did it? It didn't provide the dimming of the home back and recent buttons to help prevent burn-in? It didn't update brightness configs? It wasn't just colors...
And yes not all batches have the burn-in or even the severe blue tinting issues. I have no signs of burn-in and compared my phone to another P2XL and my blue tinting is hardly visible when my buddies is easily noticed. He does not have any noticeable burn-in either.
I understand that a lot of it is hardware related but there can be improvements on software side to help make the screen last as long as possible as we all know OLEDs decay over time regardless. Is it sub par, it very well may be, but to the average user I dont know if they will notice it being sub par versus superb. I honestly have zero gripes with screen, it is highly objective, but so is the term "good screen".
And, as I mentioned in my post, in the end it will be up to the end user to decide if the screen is bad or not.
I love my Pixel 2 XL. It's the best phone I've ever used and that's with five years of selling phones.
The screen isn't as good as Samsungs. I wish that it was, especially considering the price tag. But the screen is not bad but any means. The blue tint is a design choice. It doesn't bother me. I would like a wider color gamut than just the RGB colorspace and the new "saturated" option just seems to make everything more saturated as opposed to just enabling super saturated colors to be displayed. I find that very disappointing. But that is fixable...
I could go on and nitpick the rest of the phone, but truly the reason to buy this phone above all others is the software. It's buttery smooth. It makes the other companies software look bit silly.
I would recommend the phone. It was otherwise perfect for me if not the screen, and the screen is not that bad especially after the OS update yesterday. I don't see any graininess. I like the natural color more (and now you can change to saturated mode), there is very slight screen burn in or image retention (which I have to look for it by downloading a screen test app and adjust the screen brightness and environment lighting to be able to see, normally I just can't see it). The worst about the screen for me is the blue tint. It was very noticeable when I first switch on the phone, perhaps I specifically look for it after reading all the comments everywhere. After using it for a week, it becomes less and less noticeable. And now in the saturated mode, the blue tint becomes the normal color I am used to, while the normal color when viewed straight on becomes a vibrant and saturated one that everyone else wants.
However, I agree with others that you can go to a verizon store and have a look yourself. And buy and try for a week then decide whether you want to return it.
