Lit Screen Woes. My phone's bright beautiful and won't shut up. - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I would love it if my screen stayed off when I'm not using my phone. My screen is constantly lighting up. Many different things can trigger it, but once the screen is lit up, it stays lit for hours. This is very stressful. I have not modified my phone; it is stock. I have installed an Snes emulator and Worms Armageddon. That's it.
When I'm charging the phone, I'm usually asleep. When the phone completes recharging, the screen lights up and stays lit ALL FREAKING NIGHT. When I wake in the morning, I have to reach over and hit the button. When it's in my pocket and I receive a text, the screen lights up and STAYS LIT until I reach in and hit the button. Sometimes the phone is lit for an hour or more before I notice the heat in my pocket.
Also, this phone is huge and beautiful and I love it, but it's so wide in my pocket that the power button is constantly being pressed somehow. This also causes the screen to light up and stay lit inside my pocket. So far on average 80-90% of my battery is CONSTANTLY CONSUMED by this screen constantly turning on and staying on when I don't want it to. Do I have any options?
Is there a rom that addresses these issues?

1. Happened a couple times on my wife's stock rooted phone. A dalvik cache clear set it right whenever it happened.
2. Get a TPU case that has holes for buttons. This way buttons would be accessibly only by accessing it wantedly, and not by pockets.
3. Install greenify, and push all games to that. This way your emulator would be put to hibernate mode until needed again.

That's interesting because I only had:
Reboot system now
Apply update from external
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache

Yep I'm crazy. I flashed back to stock and low and behold it wasn't there.

I don't feel much closer to a solution here. I would really like to know: Is this behaviour normal for the S3? Do your phones do this too? Or is it just mine? My Galaxy (original) never did this kind of thing. It would light up, then time out, and turn off the screen, like a phone should.
Just today, I open my work locker to check my S3. Screen's on again of course. Why is it on? Because I got a text 2 HOURS AGO. I just .... don't freaking understand this behaviour. It's AWFULY FRUSTRATING AND STRESSFUL.

1. I looked it up. A "dalvik chache clear" requires that I install something called the "Clockwork Mod" - is that right?
2. I have never used a case for my phone and I NEVER will. I suppose I'll just have to put up with the button problem. I'll be more careful maybe.
3. How would pushing my games to greenify solve my problem? Doesn't android automatically hibernate all unused apps anyway? And do you think my Snes emulator is affecting my phone in the way I described? I don't think it would.

1. Yes
3. If an app requests to access resources like internet at regular intervals, android doesn't stop it. Greenify stops this from happening by disabling the app completely. Consider it on lines of disabled service.

I +1 on greenify!
Its a great app!
But don't hibernate apps such as Facebook,Gmail,Twitter, anything with push notifications. Since greenify "freezes" them until you open them manually, you won't receive any notifications. But nonetheless its a great app and battery saver

Greenify sounds great and I'll likely get it.
But none of this addresses the issue: My issue is not with the phone's efficiency. I know it would be fantastically efficient if it didn't permanently light up the screen every time I received a text. This wears out the screen too! THIS is the problem and it's a real big problem!
EDIT: "To prevent spam to the forums, new users must wait five minutes between posts" - Okay but why do I also have to wait 5 minutes to fix my typos? GRRRR!! Website design oversight, I think!

You might have it set not to time out ever.

Yeah I checked that. it's always been set to 30 seconds. Thanks though.

To me it sounds like you dont have anything on your phone so why not do a factory reset? You can use SMS Backup to keep all your texts, and everything else is synced. If you dont want to factory reset, then I don't know what.
Id just root it and put a custom recovery such as TWRP and clear both caches.

get used to it if you intend to use sense, the screen you speak of is sort of like the htc sense/rosie intro. If you dont like it you can go vanilla and use another launcher, like adw froyo, launcherpro, or even the extra launcher thats included....
Sounds like you enabled aggressive handling of apps. Can you get in there to turn it off?

Or just do a factory reset.
also, you are experiencing some isolated problems which leads me to beleive the issue is software related rather than hardware.I have experienced NOT ONE of the issues you speak of. Make sure you update prl. I can vouch for that one. My data was 90% broken till i did. Also try and wipe data, that would prolly fix everything as well.....FYI, i cannot gurantee the problem lies with your hardware OR software. Thats just my diagnosis. Good luck

Heh...I did that once on my hero. I know the feeling.
some versions of spare parts come with a launcher. the problem is that when you press the home button now, it's trying to goof with /system, which is forcing the reboot. even though you may be rooted, you don't have rw privileges in /system while messing with android.
you may be able to get away with accessing /system and erasing your goofy installed spare parts app. you'll have to do that through adb shell, and the custom recovery. do a search for 'remove apps', you should find it easily enough. i think the thread was moved from dev to general, or q and a.
anything that will call a write to /system (i.e. a rooted app that needs access to it to work right) has the potential to cause the phone to reboot. when i installed adfree, it had the same effect. trying to install hosts (which write to /system/etc) caused a reboot. i had to install hosts through recovery with a push after remount.
hope that helps
Hmm I installed autokiller and it appears to work doesn't mess with anything that is
I really dunno a way of testing that its actually working though if you where looking for a way to manage memory
I was using a task killer but read up on stuff and turned it off just keeping it in case I need it for something that wont close and the phone is running great and battery life keeps getting better and better.

autokiller
People you need to be careful with autokillers!
Make sure that you are not closing down sense items.
Put anything that says htc or sense on ignore.
If not you are shutting down parts of sense. Then sense has to reboot. Witch is why you see the white screen with the htc logo in the middle.

battery pull?

Anyone else have serious issues with the inc2? I am not sure if mine is constantly running out of memory or something, but I have tried using a task killer which did not help. Push email does not push, whole phone slows down when all I do is run Facebook and use the default internet browser, and I mean to the point of the text becoming lagging, where I can continue to tap letters out and then it literally has to catch up to write it all out.
I have done a few factory reset and now have no applications installed and still see the phone struggling to type this very post out.
Sometimes it for so annoying that I just had to restart the phone or if that had trouble loading would simply pull the battery out.
Could the phone be over heating or something? Because it does not seem like it is an issue with background applications as it always tells me that I have more that 90% of the memory free.
I would somewhat understand if I was watching some highdef movie, streaming Pandora all at the same time...but no.
Sounds like my Eris before root...something is wrong...maybe try to swap if for another?

Do you use the HTC email app? Apparently this causes a lot of the problems you are describing.
i've been having some of these issues also, especially the typing lag. not really sure why. but i'm hoping that with a new custom ROM, things will be resolved.
I've had some of the same issues as described but I found it to be fixed once I got into the default recovery and cleared out the cache.
It doesn't erase anything on the phone and seems to have helped things out for me tremendously.
Just be prepared the first boot afterwards will take a while.
You also need to disable fast boot in the power menu through settings in order to access the default recovery.
Vol down + power I believe.

Yes I do. Mainly to push my university's email, which uses gmail. I guess I will try to use the gmail application instead and see how that works.
Ugh, hopefully Gingerbread fixes and upgrades a lot of this stuff.

Unless I'm wrong, the HTC mail app will only push Exchange accounts. Everything else is polled at an interval. It can be a good part of keeping the phone awake/draining the battery. Though, it is for legitimate reasons.

[Q] Screen timeout not working?

I have stock (rooted then unrooted) JC with APEX launcher. It sounds crazy but my phone screen doesn't turn off by itself.
There are several times I woke up in the morning to find out my phone screen was on overnight (screen must have turned on when I plugged in the charger). Right now, I turned on my phone just to see if the screen would turn off at 1) lock screen 2) apex home screen. neither works.
I tried all these with different timeout settings (15 sec, 30 sec, 1min, etc.).
Anyone having the same problem? Anyone with solution?

Kinda glad i wasnt the only one having this issue. Happened to me yesterday. Kinda freaked me out as i dont want anything wrong with this phone.. reboot worked for me yesterday.
On a side note.. every once in awhile my youtube app goes to **** and it refuses to play videos.. it says network error yet i can do everything else... reboot fixes that too.

Yeah no kidding. I really don't want anything to go wrong with my phone. But unfortunately it has been kinda buggy from day one. A minor issue with the stock keyboard was solved after the 4.1.2 update. But the weird error with the Quick Commands thingy ain't getting sorted out, even after the update. Of course, reboots also never help.
Oh someone please tell me what's wrong with my phone The screen timeout thingy ain't working An unattended message or missed call means my display stays on till I turn it off manually A reboot would solve the issue but then it would come back again. Any permanent fix? Please help I've never rooted my phone.

Went through the 124 apps that had WAKE_LOCK permission. (Used Permission Explorer). If I count out the recently installed apps before which the problem had originally started, I guess there aren't any suspicious apps. Oops Aren't there any apps that forces the display to go off? ^_^

Hi. Having the same problem... However, i believe it has to do with the feature that prevents screen from turning off if you are looking at it. Try to turn it off and on. Perhaps it will help.
If you continue to have problems, just disable that feature... it is a good adon, but having the screen turn off tose battery is more important.
Hope it helps.

Inexplicable behavior

Recently I have observed the strangest behavior with my phone running cm10.
Whenever I am in this particular classroom, everything works fine until i open google chrome, the phone screen will start flickering and the reception bar instantly drops to 0, battery bar drains completely empty (or so it appears), and the phone screen hangs. The only way to recover from that is by pulling the battery. However the syndrome comes back without having to open the chrome the 2nd time and on.
The only way to completely recover from that is by pulling the battery and leaving the phone off, get out of the culprit classroom, go underground, get on the train and then turn the phone back on. That's when it will start behaving normal with remaining battery level intact. Turning the phone back on before I get underground will still bring back the problem even if I have already walked half mile from the campus.
This is simply beyond my comprehension. I don't know if the problem is caused by some sort of signal interference that exist in that room(I have never experienced this in other rooms prior to this semester). Why is it only triggered by operating chrome? And finally, why is it fixed by such an unorthodox method?
That sounds too crazy to be true...

Thanks, I will try all the suggestions.
However regardless of the outcome, I am still bewildered as to why the problem only occurs in that room and would not go away unless I go into the subway.

Definitely aliens. Or the government...

isn't chrome bundled with gapps for CM/AOSP releases? OP could try reflashing gapps and wiping cache and dalvik. plus investing in an aluminum foil case wouldn't hurt, to prevent alien/government interference of course
OP have you tried reproducing this with any other browser like Firefox or Dolphin?
I have had this issue with Chrome since three second beta update. Never could rectify it. Nothing really showed when I read through the logcat. I had to quit using it.

This is just a theory… but give it a shot.
Every time you put it down, sounds like something has come lose inside of it. Has it been dropped at all since you bought it?
Either way, try this, for starters:
I would suspect that your battery might be a little loose. Fold a small little shred of paper up, and wedge it between the “butt end” of the battery (this opposite side of where the connector pins are) and the device. This will effectively push the battery into the pins a little more, and possible keep it from coming loose.
Also, put a small folded piece of paper directly between the battery and the back cover of the device.
The idea here is to keep the battery from moving around. This will rule out the possibility of it coming loose, and resetting.
Also, take your micro SD card out if you have one.
Are you using any custom ROMs or kernels?
Good luck, I’ll keep an eye on this thread.
Well not every time, sometimes, sometimes when I lock the phone it restarts. Yes I have dropped it couple times, and no I'm not rooTed or running custom roms or kernels. K so for now turn off automatic updating and see if the problem goes away.
Also, why are you not rooted? I would recommend doing this. There is no reason not to be at least rooted.
Also, go into your settings>application manager and wipe data on the following system apps...
Google play store
Google play services
Downloads
Then reboot the device.
