Note 2 and SwiftKey. - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
Anyone got serious and annoying lag on the latest SwiftKey? It's so unfortunate, on my GNex it still runs as smooth as butter and no lag but on 2 different note 2 handsets it just runs like a dog. Laggy touches and it'll slow and catch up. Soooo frustrating...
Any help would be appreciated on this one. It almost takes the enjoyment out of having this lovely fast phone and a beautiful screen to thumb type with...
Cheers.

I too have it but barely noticable!
I guess its because its learnt too many custom words from my sms's.

Long time Swype beta user, I converted to the newest version of the SwiftKey out of pure curiosity, and after trying for some days found that this is a keeper, and it is so fast when I open it and no problems whatsoever with this keyboard, I use also the default keyboard for hand writing with the spen board switcher, just amazing experience, so far. Btw I am using 240 dpi.
About your problem, try cleaning cache plus dalvik cache and reinstalling one or 2 times plus reboot. Hope this will help.

Same here.
In Hebrew if I flow more than 2 words it stops understanding what I flow, so I don't have THAT problem. On English its pretty annoying..

This happens sometimes. Sometimes the keyboard doesn't even disappear or anything like that because it's stuck. Only thing you can do, I imagine, is clear cache, and start again. Pain in the butt! But hey... it's all you can do ATM.

Happens with me too. When too many processes are running in the background, it sort of lags sometimes. Also it has crashed on me twice till now. Not much but just putting it here. You can try clearing the cache and see if that helps in any way!

unlink it from your SMS , facebook and twitter.
I use Swiftkey and no lags at all.

Thanks for all your replies guys.
Yeah have emailed them and got the usual. We work on improving it all the time blah blah. She said to use a task killer... Strange as we all know this isn't the best way to handle memory any more. That'll just ruin things more. Anyway...
Yeah I don't have it linked to any of my accounts, I don't have twitter ect anyway so I don't know what's causing the lag. I wish it was as smooth as my GNex... I don't understand, this phone is twice the specs and it lags on a keyboard, weird...
Sent from LV-426...

Strange, I never had the problem and I use Swiftkey for 3 months (with stock and dualnote roms (actually))
I think you should try to install again your rom, maybe you have some files corrupted and it makes it laggy.
If you are root, you can also try to use Greenify to decrease your ram usage or/and remove some app activities to disable autostart of them. (autostart or system tools app can do that)

Oh ok thanks man.
Yeah I haven't rooted yet. Going to but haven't got around to it haha. So fully stock and I'm having these issues. It's not unusable is just slower than it should be. And my GNex runs it perfect. It's strange.

Strange indeed, SwiftKey is an app I've never had issues or freezes with, and I restore it with data with TB on new roms like once a month.

Wow all I can say is that Swiftkey has been giving me lags ALL The time. I'm on MC3 and I"m not sure if it's the update or the program, but I have even reset to factory, started anew, backed up, cleared cache and then restored, I've tried EVERYTHING. Still laggy as hell and then buttery smooth at other times. Strange.

I noticed at times that it took a while or the keyboard won't show up at all. I was using latest Samsung Rom based on xxdmc3 with both Swype and swiftkey. I'm now on ARHD and its doing fine so far. Somehow I think the issue it with the libraries that calls for the keyboard to pop up when needed, and not necessarily from the keyboard app.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium

is there an option to use one keyboard for S-pen and another for key-press... like stock for s pen and swiftkey for hand writing??

I've a problem with Swiftkey on Quicksheet (from QuickOffice Pro) either on stock Polaris View :
When I have modified a cell, I can't modify a new one. These softwares freeze. And with the stock Samsung one all is ok.
Have you been facing this ?
Thanks

Is there any reason to use Swiftkey over Swype Beta? Because Swype works for me flawlessly and I have Swiftkey on my GNex and it seems to me that Swype is quite superior to Swiftkey?

Thanks again guys for your feedback.
Yeah I get all that bad stuff. As I've said I've emailed SwiftKey and they haven't helped me at all. Really disappointed.
I get laggy input and keyboard bring up is sometimes slow too. Geez, this device is quad core and should fly compared to my GNex... My GNex runs it like butter. Never misses a beat. Really confusing.

Google Play is so laggy!

After a year, Google Play is STILL the laggiest piece of software I have seen on ANY platform. How can Google still have it so laggy? I never use Google play because the experience sucks.
How come Google didn't fire the guy who approved the app with such lags and still haven't solved this issue?

Are we talking about the market? If so mine is nice and smooth, but it was laggy before but they updated it long ago.
When you scroll up or down when browsing apps its sooo lagy! But when you view an app its very smooth. Also transitions on Google play is very choppy.
Maybe this is an ICS issue because its the same on every app

You may need to re flash your phone or something. I am on my GSII and other than the millisecond it takes for the icon to appear the market is very fast and smooth. I can flick my finger and scroll through fifty apps with no issue..... Every click and backspace is smooth..... You might want to try and smooth your phone out..... Seems like issues from flashing a million times. Don't forget to wipe..... And wipe again.
killing is my business, And business is good.
You're holding it wrong. But seriously the only lag you mention might be when you scroll down the page is caching more apps and you're waiting for it to download. The faster your connection the less lag/caching you will experience. Everything else is as smooth as my latency allows. No lag here.

When looking at a long list of apps, scroll the page/screen one app at a time, then you'll have no lag.
Like everyone's said, there's "lag" because the screen is generating/downloading/updating the blank app icons to the app icon's picture.

To the OP you seriously have some really bad problems with android. You were ranting about nexus and the updates now about the play store why don't you go with iOS or windows phone 7. I personally went with iOS for 6 months and yes there is less bugs (yes they do have bugs trust me ) but the system is so closed the you get bored at it ( at least I did ) and the app store takes longer on iOS ( I do still have my ipad tho ) but is just how it is. Nothing is perfect nothing will be. Personally I haven't played with windows phone 7 much so I can't give you any excuses but that it doesn't have the apps and some are too expensive. Please move on if you feel like it, I do no feel the phone laggy and I don't have problems with it. I don't look for something wrong I just use it as normal and so far mine everything works normal .
For the rest sorry for the long post. Please let's move on and forget about this

Jellybean Keyboard lag?

Hey,
I'm having some keyboard lag input on my Galaxy Nexus running Jellybean... I noticed it in applications like facebook messenger (sometimes) and whatsapp.
I find this very annoying and would like to know if anyone got the same issues or even ideas to fix it?
I had this problem on ICS, too.
You could be running a bunch of background **** that lags other apps. I have a pretty clean Nexus with next to nothing running in the background and I have no keyboard lag.

Yes, i have the same lag issues, so much for proyect butter, now the keyboard lags even more than on ics , i use whatsapp a lot and the lag is quite noticeable
The first thing I noticed about my GNex (coming from a Droid X) was how lag-free the Keyboard seemed.
I was super impressed.
The first thing I noticed on JellyBean was that my keyboard seemed a bit laggy despite all of the smoothness in every other UI element.
Maybe once source hits it'll have been improved.
Keep in mind...we're using a "preview" build currently.

As I said I am running Android 4.1 Jellybean, on ICS I just got these lags from time to time...
It's very annoying typing with such a keyboard, sometimes it doesn't respond to keypresses what means that it skips letters n' ****..
I haven't noticed a lag...
No lag as such on mine, but for some reason I find myself mistyping more frequent and hitting shift and delete rather then 'a' and 'l'. Probably just me though...

This is a little off topic, both does facebook messenger work as expected in jellybean? For me there are no messenger notifications since I installed jellybean. I have to manually check if there are new messages.
As per the keyboard lag, try a different keyboard. I use Swiftkey 3 and I'm very happy with it.
Try going to settings/ language and input settings/ Android keyboard settings/ advanced settings and uncheck next word prediction. I remember I lagged A LOT and it seemed I was hitting random keys. Idk if this is related but I restored all my apps and data and the lag was horrible even throughout the entire system so I did a full wipe and only restored apps with NO data. Haven't had a single issue since.

Yep, getting TONS of Whatsapp lag. While scrolling, even the keyboard.
Getting a lot of lag but as soon as i turned off vibration when keys are pressed in the input settings it stopped majority of it but now its sometimes mistyping
Same here, but mostly limited to Whatsapp + Swiftkey 3 combination and only in landscape mode.
Swiftkey 3 works perfectly with no lag at all in all applications included whatsapp when used in portrait mode.
The same with the standard android keyboard.
In landscape mode, I can write SMS and other stuff (Facebook messenger etc) with Swiftkey 3 with no lag (at least at my writing speed I am experiencing no delay).
When writing with WHATSAPP and Swiftkey it is a disaster... after a sentence i have to wait half a second for the last word to show up after having typed it!
Things seem a bit better with whatsapp + android keyboard in landscape but still a bit laggy.
It seems tome it is mostly a whatsapp problem after all.

Android 4.2 IMPRESSIONS/THOUGHTS/REVIEW/OVERVIEW

After finally getting the update, I tried 4.2 for the first time. To be honest, I imagined 4.2 to be a needed update to the already amazing 4.1.2.
PERFORMANCE
Like some of the users have stated, there is a slight slow down in performance. After using 4.1, the drop in frame rates in 4.2 is more evident. Apps run slower, laggier, and less smooth. Not all apps though, just some. To name a few would be Apex Launcher, Lock Screen App, Whatsapp (only slightly) and a few others. This bugs me. Project Butter? I definitely do not feel that its faster now despite what people have said.
STABILITY
I don't know how many apps I couldn't run because they forced close. And I'm suspecting its due to this 4.2 update. So now I'm patiently waiting for the updates to hopefully solve the problem.
NEW FEATURES
- Lock screen
I really dislike the new lock screen. It just looks ugly to me. The fonts they used in 4.1 was already great. Why change it to this? Google Now has been placed down at the bottom now, making it slower to access it in my opinion. There were a few times where the phone couldn't detect my swipes - maybe it could just be my fault for not hitting the right place). The idea of having widgets on the lock screen is well...rather niche. There isn't even a lot of widgets that can be added on to the lock screen unless I have to reinstall all my apps that I installed before the update. The worst thing about is, it lags. Even on the lock screen.
- Quick settings menu
I don't really find this helpful. Here's why. I already have an app called 'Notification Toggle' that basically adds toggles in my notification bar. Its minimal, quick and fast. I have no problem with Google adding their own version. Its just that in doing that, they have gotten rid of the settings button at the main notification drawer (one finger pull for notifications). Their own toggles are alright. I'm OK with the look of it, but 5 toggles just isn't enough for me (the others are just shortcuts e.g. settings, profile, battery). Hope Google puts back their settings button like in 4.1 or just improve on their toggles.
- Photosphere
One of the main updates in 4.2. I do like the software and layout behind it. Its really well thought out and its definitely an improvement from 4.1.I can access things faster, capture pictures faster and do photosphere - which is googles new 360 panorama that is similar to Google maps Street View. It isn't exactly perfect but I'm guessing its also the users part to take a well-stitched photosphere.
- Keyboard
This is probably the part where I won't complain. This keyboard is the keyboard I've been waiting for. After using Sense 4's keyboard with 'Swype' gestures, I couldn't find any keyboard that could outmatch it. Everything was perfect for me with that keyboard. But now finally I can say that I have found a better one. Not only aesthetically but also functionally. I type faster and smarter now. Google has done a great job with the prediction engine. Almost 90% of the time I'll get the word I want. And even if I don't, the word will more than likely to appear next to the main predicted word. But I believe that the upcoming updates will improve on that.
CONCLUSION
And no, if you're wondering I'm no apple guy. I prefer Android over iOS. These tiny little things just tick me off sometimes. Especially when it comes to performance issues. Most probably either jumping back to 4.1 or flashing another ROM. I think the only thing I wanted from this update was the 'new' keyboard and probably photosphere. I could've just got it separately and not complain. But anyway, that's my thoughts on 4.2. Quite disappointed as you can tell. If you're thinking of updating, think again before you do.
UPDATE: Replaced lock screen with Widget Locker. One problem down. Weird, but it seems a tad faster now for some reason. Battery life is about the same or maybe a little worse.

I applied the OTA as soon as I was presented to it, and I have to say that something must have gone TERRIBLY wrong! I had an extremely fast and responsive device, now my gnex is really unusable. Slow, hanging, lags is not the proper word, we are talking about geological eras, here! Instead of going back to stock, I want to test some custom roms (I have to reinstall anyway, so what the heck... I will seize the occasion) and see what could have happened, but I am really desperate. I am trying to understand if I really have to go back to 4.1.2...
I did ota and dont have any sort of lag(camera orientation only), i have over a 100 apps installed and none of them have force closed or slowed down

Yes, that is what I have to do.
I have resistances to doing a full reset because I have made a backup of the SD, but I am happier if my data stay where they are!
For the moment, I will experiment with a couple of ROMs, so I can wipe everything but the SD via recovery.
I'm mostly disappointed with 4.2. A few nice additions I guess: lock screen widgets though it's more or less personal preference, native swipe texting and photosphere. I also like the foundation for multi-users. In the future I think that will be a big thing.
But there are too many downsides. Performance lag compared to 4.1.2 (yes, even after clean install) and my issue with my cheek still pressing things despite the proximity sensor having shut off the screen (I've pressed random numbers and even managed to hang up on people during calls because of it). These are the major things bothering me.
I'll probably be downgrading to 4.1.2 in a few days.

I think the bugs are because something is wrong with the OTA update itself.
I did a takju factory image flash with a clean storage and no performance issues or bugs at all (Except december), but when a friend of mine did the OTA he got most of the bugs people complain about.
Advice: wipe your phone clean and flash the factory image or wait for 4.2.1
I'm quite happy with 4.2
The lock screen is the matter of preference, I like to have the access to the camera when using PIN or gesture lock. In the future I see having some news or weather widget there but definitely not gmail or messaging. I'd quickly regret that if my phone would get lost or stolen.
I love swype functionality. It's a nice blend between two keyboards and it doesn't lag.
Photosphere is big, with some patience you can get amazing results. Try using some kind of tripod for best results.
Gmail pinch to zoom is the long awaited update and works great but also thanks to scaling your emails you can now scroll between emails more easily.
There are parts where the device feels more laggy, less responsive (camera orientation, multi task list) but these will hopefully be fixed with the future updates. And knowing there is no December in people app Google is probably working full speed to bring that 4.2.1 to us

Galaxy S3 Keyboard Lag Issues

Hey I'm making this thread for a friend of mine. He has the S3 (dual core version) and he experiences quite a bit of lag when he's using the keyboard typing a message or searching the Internet.
It's completely stock, not rooted. I have LTE disabled on it. I also disabled all the transition effects on it. Don't think it made much of a difference.
Is there anything he can do to speed it up? Surely it should be lag free with a dual core on android 4.2.1.
Rooting is out of the question. He doesn't want me to mess with it.
I have same thing..... Download a trial of swift key..... It's the best keyboard ever made in my opinion. If he likes it.... Tell him to buy the full version.
It includes:
Swipe
3 language autocorrect at same time

I'm not sure why there's lag, but if he would like to try another keyboard, I recommend Swype or Swype Beta.
Granted, there's a bit of a delay when you're pressing the key one by one, but if you're just "swyping" along, it's very fast.
Go to settings and uncheck the tap sound & vibration
It got better after that
You can also try going into applications, Find samsung keyboard. Clear the data. Worked for me.

Hey thanks a lot of all the recommendations.
I'll first try the clearing the data and vibration changes, if that fails I'll see if he wants to try SwiftKey. I purchased the paid version of SwiftKey I know that's a fantastic keyboard!
I use Kii Keyboard. It's developed by a guy here on XDA, and it's available in the play store. There's a free version and a paid version, but your friend would have all the features he needs in the free version. It is the best keyboard I've ever used, but to each their own. I encourage him to try it out. Zero lag ever.

The Samsung keyboard will always lag as it tries to learn the user type style but Samsung has mastered it yet. So clearing the data brings it back to normal but will return to its laggy style after a day or two.
Stock jellybean keyboard or swift key would be my top recommendations

Hangouts lag??

Anyone getting alot of lag when sending hangouts messages?
On both the LG G3 and this phone.
I have not received any lag at all with hangouts or the default messaging app on the note 4. I am however having issues adding widgets on the homescreens and keeping apps in my folders in the app drawer after reboots. beautiful widgets and hd widgets and widgetsoid widgets all act as if they were added to the homescreen but then when you get to the homescreen, they aren't there. I know the apps coming out of the folders in the app drawer were a problems on most other samsung phones after the first boot, but mine is happening after every single boot.
As for sending messages, i havent had any lag at all. If anything, my signal has greatly improved

weird.. wonder if it's something with the resolution.. It's not some kind of intensive activity though. It's just really janky when hitting send.. hmmm
If that was the case, then why wouldn't i have the lag issues then? Is there any other apps that are consuming your ram while on your phone? At least enough to bog it down while sending messages?
I also encountered this issue. If you downgrade to stock hangouts, there is no lag. The lag is pretty harsh ONLY when you are SENDING the message.
yup! just put my 1 star review on Google Play. hangouts is the worst. it's terrible on all samsung devices. it's practically unusable. it lags down swiftkey like crazy. the only devices hangouts works well with are nexus devices and aosp roms. it's terrible on LG, samsung and htc ui. ugh so annoying.

I completely disagree. No offense. I have used hangouts on my old htc, and all my samsung devices and have never had a problem at all. Ive used it on the s3, the rezound, s4, note 3 note 2 and now my note 4 with no issues.
Ill keep trying on my note 4 to see if i can duplicate the issues but so far it has been flawless
Do you have animations on?

Yea.. same exact experience Im having.
I even deleted my whole text database and hangouts message history to make sure that wasnt causing a problem. Tried clearing cache, data, re-installing, etc.
have sort of the same issue on my Galaxy Note 8 and my gfs Galaxy S4.. so many it doesnt like Samung for some reason. Dont have the problem on my old DROID RAZR M.
Oh well.. maybe it's something they will look into if enough people have the problem.
I get a small amount of lag right after I hit send, the paper airplane gets stuck half way thru it's animation then after a second or so it finishes it's animation and the message sends. Had this problem since the last update. Also affected my LG G3.
To whoever asked if i had animations on, i do.
I should also note that I am not running the tw launcher but nova instead until they can get the widget issue fixed. Not sure if that would have anything to do with it or not.
Some of you guys having issues be interested in trying a launcher form the play store and see if the issue still remains? Just fyi, themer is not compatible with the note 4 yet but all the others seem to work.
don't know how some people have it and some don't. i always suspected, though, that swiftkey might be a part of the culprit. swiftkey is the only keyboard i can use and type fast on, so i can't use anything else...but in hangouts it was always much slower than the stock keyboard. on my GS4 it was awful and lagged horribly. i miss google talk lol that app was perfect. never any lag. was always so quick on those low end phones..ugh!

has nothing to do with launcher. i use nova.
Ok, with this new info, I am NOT using swift key. Beginning to wonder if that may be why I'm not dealing with the lag issue. It's weird that a keyboard would be lagging a messaging app though.

I'm using stock note 4, just have my regular apps. Using stock Samsung keyboard, stock launcher. Still have Hangouts lag. It's not terrible, but definitely noticeable.
I have lag when sending messages, on that animation. Also had the same lag on my GS5. Not sure why.

SwiftKey can make anything lag... lmao. it's akin to people's hate for touchwiz. it's an amazing keyboard but it just lags down when a stock keyboard wouldn't.

I'm fairly confident the lag is from the last update. I didn't have this issue before they updated hangouts for calling features etc

I've tried desperately to duplicate this issue in hopes to help resolve any problems. I have Uninstaller hangouts and downloaded from the play store just to make sure I'm running the latest version. I hate to say this, but I still have no lag whatsoever. If you're stock and lagging in hangouts, maybe uninstall and reinstall?

Same here, recently after thr upgrades, Google Hangouts has become worse. It does lag whike switching from text to emoji. Or as mentioned here by fellow XDA Member, that it lags while sending the message.
I could even feel the lag while typing. None other app has this issue. It has got nothing to do with what's in the background and what not. I stopped using Hangouts. Only use it to make Video calls.
Also, use any launcher. It doesn't affect it. Nova, TW, whatever. And the same goes to the keyboard too. I tried using Swiftkey, Swype, Google Keyboard, Phone's stock keyboard.
Reading some replies here, and I'm just giving my view. This lag isn't from the last update. You can say last few updates. Because before those updates, Hangouts used to work fine.
Hope there is a fix to this. I don't like downgrading applications. I better stop using them.
