[Q] Brand new T999V running Cyanogenmod 10, camera doesn't work! Please help! - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

*************************SOLVED*****************************************************************************************************************************
Hi everyone!
I'm a noob. I got my Galaxy S3 T999V rooted and the boot (recovery?) runs clockworkmod. CyanogenMod 10 is running smoothly, except:
The camera doesn't work! Getting a "cannot connect to camera" error instantly upon launching the camera app (stock).
So from perusing the internet a little more, there are other phone models also suffering from this "can't connect to camera" error.
The fix involves: Booting into rooted stock. extracting the folder "cameradata" in system using a file explorer (AndroZip). Put them on the external sdcard or your computer. Then overwrite your CM10 flashed system/cameradata folder's .bin(s) and setting the permissions a certain way.
Does anyone have the stock Galaxy S3 cameradata files? And I have no idea how to change permissions!! HELP!!

THOSE ARE THE FILES (or click here?)
1. Download the files, unzip them and place them somewhere on the phone (sdcard0 or sdcard1, in some separate, user-made folder)
2. Make sure you have CyanogenMod's built-in File Manager set to allow ROOT access
3. Using CyanogenMod's built-in File Manager, click the "parent folder" at the top until the top reader line says /
4. Look for a folder called system, enter it
5. Look for a folder called cameradata, enter it
6. With nothing selected, press the :: button in the bottom left, on-screen. Select "properties" and choose 'permissions', grant all properties to everything (except the S column). This allows you to copy the downloaded files into this folder.
7. Browse to where you have the files. On the left is a tick-box, tick them all.
8. Browse back to the /system/cameradata/
9. Select the :: again. Select "paste all items here". SELECT OVERWRITE.
10. Individually long-press each item and change it's properties. Select permissions and permit all except the S column again. This allows the app to be accessed, the user to change the app, and the app to save files.
11. Attempt to run the STOCK camera app. CHANGE THE SCENE "SCN" TO 'ACTION'. I've been told this keeps it from crashing again...
12. If the camera app is a bit laggy, try rebooting. If it persists (but camera app is functioning) may want to restore permissions using Recovery Boot (I use CWM).
The difference MAY be adding that one extra file (_ZH), but I recommend moving and overwriting all just to be safe.

I'm new to the whole modding/cyanogen/clockwork thing. I got my Galaxy S3 T999V rooted and the boot (recovery?) runs clockworkmod. CyanogenMod 10 is running smoothly, except a few issues:
- The WiFi and mobile network connections fly between 20% and 60% (with the WiFi signal reaching 98%) when I am just sitting in my room and the phone is motionless. Do I need to update the radios to get better reception? (And how do I do that? I am on Mobilicity in Canada)
- What steps do I take to perform a restore? I've made a backup in the CWM boot/recovery of Cyanogen after I got everything working fine. If I messed some things up, what steps do I take to restore back to that point? Do I press Wipe Data/Factory Reset and Wipe Cache, or do I just select Restore and the file to restore using?
- THIS IS MY BIGGEST ISSUE: The camera doesn't work! None of the camera apps work in my CM10. Skype and Hangout using the front camera works, but no photo-taking apps work (they do not even run, just black then they back out to the Apps screen)
So how do I:

try to reflash. wipe everything and make sure you didnt download nightly. nightlies can have some problems. are you sure you download the stable version?

May I ask quickly what steps are involved in "reflashing"? Just to make sure I don't do some extra step or miss something.
As far as the stable version goes, I looked for the d2tmo file on get.cm under the Stable tab. I'm assuming that would be the most stable build?
(Perhaps a nightly might fix it??)
Question: Is there not a way I can just install/add this "4.2" camera? I've seen videos and read that people are using that just fine on CM10. Alternately if I boot into recovery would "fix permissions" be any help?

The very best advise is to do the following, doing anything else will most likely prolong
the problems you are having or making them even more difficult to resolve.
First thing you need to do is to install the stock Tmobile T999 rooted firmware.
Here are the exact step by step instructions with the download link for the firmware.
After you have followed these instructions your phone will be working properly and if
you like you will be able to flash any custom roms made for the Tmobile T999 phone
or restore any backups unless the the backup is corrupted in some way or another.
Here is the link to the Tmobile Stock & Rooted firmware you need:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426451
After downloading it make a folder on your desktop and unzip the file
using Winzip or 7zip so the .TAR file is in the new folder you just made.
Here is a link for ODIN which is required for flashing the stock rooted firmware
(a windows app) http://d-h.st/Q14
Download and extract Odin into the same folder you made containing the TAR file.
Here is a step by step guide for you.
Download the firmware of your choosing (use the root66 version if you want root)
Run Odin by double clicking the Odin.exe within the folder you extracted
Turn off your phone and boot into DOWNLOAD MODE (Volume Down + Home + Power Hold until phone powers up, then release and press Volume Up to enter Download Mode)
Once in Download Mode, connect the USB/Charger cable to the phone and plug into the USB port on your computer.
You should now see a COM** port listed toward the top-left of Odin (under ID:COM)
Click on the PDA button in the middle-right area of Odin.
Browse to and select the FW you downloaded (TAR file)
Make sure Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are the only options checked and that PDA is the only other thing checked.
TRIPLE CHECK your settings and that you have selected the correct firmware for your model phone and are using the correct options.
If you are using a laptop, make absolutely sure you are plugged in, or if on battery, that it is charged enough and will not go into sleep mode during flash.
Click Start to begin the flash. This will take a while, so be patient!
Once complete, in the top-left box in Odin, it will say PASS and the phone should have automatically rebooted.
You may unplug the phone and close Odin if you wish.
Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the system to boot the first time and then build its cache! (It may seem to hang during boot, this is normal and you must be patient!!!)

I followed most of these directions the first time, using the guide from High On Android:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPeIZZVYHbY
I used Odin, got root, wiped and got CM10 working.
This seems to be a bit of a problem that has cropped up in other models (i747). The fix that was used was to get back to the Stock ROM, while rooted, and browse to the system folder /cameradata/. In there are files for permissions for the camera. Copy those to the external SD card or your computer, then get back into CM10. Replace the CyanogenMod system folder /cameradata/ with the files you got from the Stock ROM. Then change the permissions for these new files.
So does anyone have the Stock /cameradata/ files? I'd greatly appreciate it!

Just download any of the custom rom zip files based on the jellybean v4.1.1 stock rom.
All of those custom roms will have the files you are looking for.

Yes, I tried all the other options for getting my camera back on track, but only going back to a full stock (rooted) ROM got my camera up and running again. FWIW, I was running an AOSP ROM for months without issue. What kicked my camera offline (the dreaded can't connect to camera) for some strange reason was when I updated to the most recent firmware VRBMF1. Now its straight back to AOSP for me! Thanks for creating this post! Very helpful!

My fix
I'm going around posting my fix to all the camera threads in hopes of helping people find a solution sooner. I created a thread over in d2vzw http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2492304

[UPDATE][WIFI ONLY][3.1] - Flashable, No Wipe Necessary, External Storage Enabled

FIRST THINGS FIRST:
This represents very little work that I've done on my own. It is mostly appropriating the work of others. The important thing to note is that the file works and it works well.
All I did to create this file was incorporate a modified version of stachre's updater-script into the official WiFi 3.1 update from Google (this is not the file you should flash).
I then added the kernel & all of the files from bigrushdog's HC3.1 .zip EXCEPT the system.img file (which is the vast majority of the update). BRD's HC3.1 installs the 3G version of 3.1 with Hotspot/Tethering options in the settings menu under Wireless & Networks, and I personally want to have the WiFi-only software on my WiFi XOOM. His version seems to work just fine and the only difference I noticed was in the Settings menu, but that was enough of a difference for me to prefer the WiFi only software. I'm sure more of you may feel the same. If there are any other differences between the WiFi & 3G software I'd be curious to know what, if any, there are.
I then added the code from BRD's updater-script (minus the parts relevant to flashing the system.img) on to the end of the updater-script from stachre's updater-script.
One of the benefits of this approach is that it does not require you to perform a factory data reset, as BRD's method currently does. And yes, you will have access to your external SD Card in the /sdcard/external folder.
It is super late and I am exhausted, but I wanted to share this with you before I fall asleep. If you seem to notice that these instructions are more or less copy and pasted verbatim from stachre's thread, that is because they are. This is a simplified version of his method with the addition of BRD's modified version of the stock 3.1 kernel for SD Card storage. There are fewer steps (now only 2) because more files are included in the zip.
[size=+1]DOWNLOAD HERE - FLASH IN CLOCKWORK RECOVERY:[/size]
MZ604_3.1_ROOT_update.zip
WARNING: Following this procedure may damage or permamently destroy your device. This procedure is provided with NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. Perform this procedure at your own risk.
COMPATIBILITY NOTE: I have personally tested this procedure ONLY ON THE US XOOM WIFI MZ604. If other devices (i.e., Euro Xoom WiFi) implement the same Android 3.1 update file, then this procedure *should* work; some users have reported success with UK and Canadian models (see this post for more info). Know, however, that you proceed at your own risk. If you're stuck in a boot cycle, try a factory data reset in recovery.
[size=+1]SUMMARY[/size]
Here's a run-down on the current procedure:
Updates the Xoom WiFi to Android 3.1 using ClockworkMod Recovery (MZ604_3.1_ROOT_update.zip)
Resolves issue in updater-script: get_prop ro.product.device wingray
Pushes Superuser and su, sets correct permissions to enable functioning root
Flashes the system partitions to stock (required at this time)
Flashes bigrushdog modified stock boot.img (kernel) to enable external storage
Updates bootloader to include Recovery in the boot menu
Leaves user data intact
Leaves recovery intact
Outstanding Issues:
The new
Videos.apk does not appear in app drawer after update, according to Motorola this was done intentionally. Videos still play in Gallery. For some reason Motorola doesn't want us to use this app yet on the WiFi Xoom, but it's available on the 3G Xoom.
Now, without further ado...
[size=+1]ASSUMPTIONS[/size]
You've downloaded the update here: MZ604_3.1_ROOT_update.zip
You've downloaded and unzipped the stock Xoom WiFi MZ604 HWI69 images from Motorola also available via torrent
You've flashed a recent version of ClockworkMod Recovery (thanks, bigrushdog, koush, et al)
You've installed a physical SDCard in your Xoom (required for ClockworkMod Recovery updates) and have it functioning properly
You've configured the Android SDK on your PC, with adb functioning properly
You've downloaded fastboot and have it functioning properly (usually alongside adb in platform-tools)
[size=+1]PROCEDURE[/size]
Flash stock system.img & boot.img
Prior to performing the actual update, the update script checks a number of files (including bcm4329.ko, which is usually built with the kernel) in /system. If any file doesn't match what's expected, the update halts. Flashing the stock system.img ensures a smooth update.
The pre-update checks also include the boot partition. The actual update flashes this partition with a new kernel that implements the new 3.1 features.
If you are unlocked and running unrooted stock Android 3.0.1, you can skip step 1. If you are already on 3.1 and just need root and/or external SD card storage, see this thread.
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
Perform update
Code:
adb reboot recovery
You may need to re-enable USB debugging in the Application settings menu before you can send the above adb command. Alternately after sending 'fastboot reboot' in step 1, wait a few seconds after you see the Motorola logo and tap the Volume Down button. If you see "Android Recovery" at the top of the screen, tap the Volume Up button to boot into recovery and install from there.
Note that in recovery, you use the hardware volume buttons to navigate up and down, and the power button to select.
In ClockworkMod Recovery, select "mounts and storage"
Ensure your Xoom is connected to your PC via USB, then select "mount USB storage"
On your PC, copy MZ604_3.1_ROOT_update.zip to the root of the Xoom's SDCard ("Removable Disk" in Windows)
In ClockworkModRecovery (still on the "USB Mass Storage device" screen) select "Unmount"
In the "Mounts and Storage Menu" screen, if the option "unmount /sdcard" is present, continue to the next step; if "mount /sdcard" is present, select it then continue
Select "+++++Go Back+++++"
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard"
Select "MZ604_3.1_ROOT_update.zip"
Select "Yes - Install MZ604_3.1_ROOT_update.zip"
"Install from sdcard complete." will indicate that the update is completed.
.
Select "reboot system now"
New bootloader will install. The message, "Congratulations! Your bootloader was successfully upgraded" will be immediately followed by an automatic reboot.
Enjoy your rooted Xoom WiFi, running on Android 3.1!
CUSTOM KERNELS:
I told you guys it wouldn't be long. TDR has already released an overclock kernel for WiFi Xooms on 3.1.
Tips & Tricks for quick-booting into Fastboot & Recovery:
Booting into Fastboot:
Hold down both the power button and the Volume Down button. Fastboot support will boot and you can flash system/recovery/userdata images.
Booting into Recovery:
I haven't seen anyone else mention this. If you power up, wait a few seconds after the Motorola logo appears, then hit the Volume Down button you will see "Recovery" appear at the top of the screen. Hit the Volume Up key to boot into recovery!
Great instructions, the simplest I could see so far! The above process worked for my WIFI only XOOM which I had rooted and installed the Tiamat Xoom Kernel. I am in Australia so was impatient to wait for OTA which probably wouldn't have worked anyways from what I have read.
How does this differ from bigrushdogs procedure? I have a wifi only xoom and am not sure which method to follow. Is this for stockusers?
it is different because no wipe is needed, if you are stock (unrooted) you will have to wipe when you unlock the bootloader
This is exactly the method I used, though I did thinks manually and it took a while, but works great
I don't know about the videos.APk thing, there are some 3g users with the same problem, one current theory is that it has something to do with root

I think this problem is a bit two-faced, as a few of us on the 3G/VZW XOOM have updated fine and have a working video player, but rentals purchased do not play instead throw an Error 49 license error, while local content plays fine.
The Wifi users are reporting that the videos app doesn't even show up, let alone open. General suckage, not even being able to play local content.
I've been tinkering around with logs and trying to narrow down my error 49 issue but thus far have been unsuccessful.

Yeah, the two main differences between this and BRD's procedure is that you don't have to perform a factory reset to get this one to work, and this method requires adb/fastboot. I don't think you should have to erase all your data just to install an official update. It's also only one file to flash.
The other difference is that this version doesn't have artifacts from the 3G version in the Wireless & Networks Settings menu (if that bothers you).
I don't know if this update would apply on an unlocked and unrooted Xoom, but if your Xoom is unlocked this version of the update should give you root. Both would be worth testing

You can still play videos/local content fine through the gallery app, so we are safe in that respect. I can still watch all my movies or videos filmed on the Xoom just fine.
Here are some observations that I made. The WiFi update only included the Videos.apk file while the 3G update also included a Videos.odex file as well. I chose to add the Videos.odex to the update file in the OP, but it didn't make a difference (Videos apk still doesn't show in the app drawer).
Thanks.. Worked great.
Note: I had to re-enable USB debugging on the Xoom after flashing the Stock System and Boot Images.

Thanks, I updated the OP to take account of that. Ever since I figured out how to boot into recovery from the Motorola logo I haven't really needed to send the 'adb reboot recovery' command.
I used BRD update method for my wifi zoom (don't care about the extra settings) and I have a working videos.apk that plays local content. I have not yet tried to rent a video.

Yes, I'm pretty sure for whatever reason the Videos.apk is enabled for the 3G version of 3.1 but not for the WiFi version of 3.1. I agree that the extra settings isn't a big deal, I made this file mostly because I wanted a way around wiping all of my user data.
Rumor has it that Google has said that the Videos.apk will be working on the WiFi Xoom in a few days.
I used the method posted by stachre from yesterday, and I don't have access to my sdcard in sdcard/external. Any way I can change that? The two methods seem to be very similar...and I want my SD!

You are beautiful, and I love you.
I installed brd's 3.1 update yesterday, and i tried to install this zip over his method because i have a wifi xoom and wanted to get rid of the hotspot settings, but when i try to flash this in cwm i get an error:
Assert failed: file_getprop("system/build.prop", "ro.build.fingerprint") == "motorola/tervigon/wingray:3.0.1/hwi69/110420:user/release-keys" || file_getprop("system/build.prop", "ro.build.fingerprint") == "motorola/tervigon/wingray:3.1/hmj37/124251:user/release-keys"
E: error in /sdcard/mz604_3.1_ROOT_update.zip
(status 7)
installation aborted
What is the problem? Is it not possible to flash this over his method? Do i have to change the build.prop?
Thanks
Edit:
Solved by going back to stock 3.0.1 and installing the cwm to get updated to 3.1.
WARNING Boot Loop!
Warning. This method set me in to a boot loop. The tip at the bottom of the instructions eventually saved me as I booted in to recovery (adb stopped working after awhile) and upgraded via bigrushdog's clockwork thread. Not sure if it was my custom boot theme or something else. I reflashed twice while adb was still working. All looked good each time but then when I rebooted to do the final cwm step, this is where I looped each time. I was careful. Not sure why it messed up.
Thanks a lot for putting this together, worked like a charm.
So what about overclocking. I don't have option above 1ghz. Is this because we are back on a stock kernal. Will we have to wait for Tia to make a new one?

Bigrushdog has said that they are working on an overclock tiamat kernel for Android 3.1. So yes it is expected that you can not overclock your xoom in 3.1 currently.
A few questions since I have not updated my xoom to 3.1 yet:
1) Is everyone experiencing the Videos.apk error where they can't install the videos app?
2) How are the 3.1 updated features? Can anyone share if the overall user experience is better in 3.1 (better scrolling, smoother, etc).
I am kinda holding off updating 3.1 until I hear more of the drawbacks of 3.1.

1. It's weird. My understanding is that even, unrooted stock WiFi Xoom owners can't access the new Videos apk on 3.1. The Videos.apk is there it just doesn't show up in the app drawer so there isn't any way to access it. If you look for it in a file manager like Root Explorer you can see it. There are other "ghost" apps like that in Android like the SoundRecorder.apk, so that's not completely unheard of. What's puzzling is why the 3G Xoomers got one that works and we didn't. If/when this is solved I will update the OP. It does work if you use bigrushdog's update method (but you gotta wipe all your data).
The Videos apk is mostly a showcase for their Video rental service that they announced Tuesday, you can still play videos in Gallery, so you're not really missing out on any major functionality at the moment.
2. The new features are cool! It's hard to compare performance since I was overclocked before and now I'm not. I love the resizable widgets. Overall it does feel like a more polished OS, they fixed a whole bunch of little itty bitty issues here and there. I can't really think of any downsides to the upgrade, it just feels like a step in the right direction. I'm definitely looking forward to see where Honeycomb development goes in the future.
I have installed this update over my rooted wifi only 3.0. It worked great, i did get a boot loop and was forced to wipe in recovery (luckily i did a titanium backup first), apart from that it went through no problem.
I haven't used the browser extensively yet, but it does seem more stable, hasn't crashed yet and the overall browser seems much better, especially the thumb menu from labs.
Good work!!
(I have the wifi only UK version BTW)

Guid for Noobs to root and rom

This is a guide for noobs
First things first, ask yourself am I using a T-Mobile Note II SGH-t889?
If you are not, stop now.
Now if your phone blows up, fires nuclear missiles, activates sky net, or becomes a nice pretty paperweight, I am not responsible. You are using this guide at your own risk.
That being said I have provided the exact methods I used to do this on me device and it works perfectly.
OK let’s begin.
First plug your phone into your computer.
-If you are getting an error message about a connection you must have windows xp SP3 or higher (vista, windows 7)
-you must also have the Samsung mobile phone drivers available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
-you must also have windows media player 11 available on the Microsoft website.
Now that you have all this you should be able to explore the files on your phone, it will be under mobile devices.
Now on your desktop let’s make a new folder called System Folder, and in that Folder make two folders, one called ROM and one called KERNEL.
Now back on the desktop let’s make another folder called ODIN
SYSTEM FOLDER
-ROM
-KERNEL
ODIN
Let’s go over to the T-mobile note II XDA forum page http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1877
Now we’re going to go to the section called ORIGINAL ANDROID DEVELOPMENT
Download the KERNEL "peruses". http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960935
Download the one that says Perseus-alpha27.4-T889-CWM.zip (though the version number may change)
Put that file in the KERNEL folder (DO NOT UNZIP IT)
Download cwm6-recovery-n7100-121014.tar : http://www.mediafire.com/?mouxvj4og7azcow CWM md5: 67208cd19e82478af8591a83ca0a39b2 (the md5 is used to check your download, make sure you have no errors)
Put this file in the ODIN folder
Download CWM SUPERSU installable ZIP: http://www.mediafire.com/?w3i20sr6r58r8ah (put this in System Folder, DO NOT UNZIP)
SU md5 : 010b98d757544d7b2971574951c1d5e6
Download PC Odin: http://d-h.st/6Er put this into the Odin folder and unzip this one
Download Xquizit rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960950
Download the xquizit rom kitchen too.
Put these in the ROM folder, (DO NOT UNZIP)
This rom is straight forward, once you get the hang of flashing try other ROMs.
Now copy the System Folder to your phones external SD card.
Now open Odin and select the pda button and select the cwm6-recovery-n7100-121014.tar file in the Odin folder on desktop
Now switch off device and reboot in download mode by:
Press Vol down + Home +Power, and then, press Volume UP button in Warning Page to enter the Download Mode
Connect device to PC and wait till device successfully added to com port (it will turn light blue)
Hit ‘Start’ to flash
Once it flashed successfully, you can see 'PASS' in table above the ID: COM, you can disconnect device from PC
Now reboot into CWM by: Switch off device and press Vol Up + Home +Power hold about 5 second
Install SuperSu by selecting install zip from SD card, then select install zip from external SD card, then navigate to system folder and install the superuser.zip that is there.
Reboot.
Download Triangle Away from the play store or from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
Run this and it will reset your flash counter to 0.
You have now achieved root.
Install titanium backup, and backup all of your user apps+data (USER APPS ONLY or just reinstall them all from the play store) (you can do this one by one or in a batch in the third tab if you have the paid version. (DO NOT BACKUP RED NAMED FILES, ONLY WHITE)
Download APN backup and restore from the play market
Open it, you will get an error, dismiss it and press the back button
Open titanium and find APN backup and restore, long press it and select to make it a system app.
Press home.
Open APN B&R. and dismiss the error, this time hit menu and disable the ICS check. Then press back and reopen it, NO ERROR
Now backup your APN settings.
Switch off device and press Vol Up + Home +Power hold about 5 second to go back into recovery
Go to the backup/restore section, and backup your current rom (do not skip this, we are about to erase your phone and if something goes wrong and you do not have this, pretty paperweight)
Now go back to the main menu
Wipe data and factory reset 3 times over, wipe cache 3 times over, now go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache 3 times over
now go back to the install zip from sd card menu and select the external sd card, navigate to system folder, and then Rom, then install the xqizit rom.zip file it will open aroma installer, it will give you options of what you want to do, you do not need to re wipe, install typical or custom to choose what apps you want, (svoice is removed unless you add it back under custom) then you want to install the 15 toggle mod.
Now once that is done, reboot the device, wait 10 minutes.
Now open the play store and update superuser
Download apn backup and backup the new tmobile apn with the wifi fix and titanium backup and restore your apps
You are now rooted and on a custom rom with multi window support. Hold down the back button to activate multi window.
Reboot into recovery
Install the perseas kernel zip from the kernel folder
Reboot the phone
Wait for the home screen
Reboot for good measure
You will want to put triangle away back on your device and run it again
You can download CPU control apps and over clock and under clock ECT.
You can change your boot animations; see my post under themes n apps for that.
Have fun and enjoy
Special thank to Dr.Ketan , Chainfire , Chenlu, simplelife, wild child, and any others I have forgotten to mention
Well I would say this needs a sticky...
But since we cant get anything stickied for no reason at all. It will just wander off into the forgotten realm of the tmobile note 2 forums in the dark cold depths of xda where no one cares to do anything to help organize this forum.
Not only do we have worthless posts repeated day after day to no end, and the same question asked repeatedly by the same user. The foreigners that dont have a clue. And trolling to no end. But a thread that could possibly help someone one day will just die along with 'help I bricked my phone' threads. What a shame...
Someone please sticky this

This snt fair to let this thread go into oblivion. Mods please sticky this guy actually spemt some time making something useful but you guys wont sticky it. Yet viirus comes on here and bilks money from the community and basically steals doing absolutely nothing to back up his promises and people treat me like crap.
But you guys loved him....this is messed up.
Do something positive for the community.
I was right the first time. Please just listen to me

Bump for your hard work.
This seems like a great tutorial and guide. The only thing missing might be pictures for the super noobs
I haven't tried this yet but i subbed for future reference
What about backing up the IMIE? Forgive me if it's in there it's just that I am very nervous about that. I am coming from the HTC Sensation and am not familiar with flashing Samsung phones. And from what I am understanding this issue is even new to those that have been flashing Samsung phones in the past
To be honest
I havr never backed up my imei
I only use sammy
I have never had a problem
Ill look into this for you though
Good point, better safe than sorry.

Thankyou for your kind words.
I made this for one particular person who was a bit afrade of rooting.
As always I share with the world for those who dont think to or are afrade to ask.

Don't wanna be a hater, but this guide is super drawn out. There is already plenty of guides that explain it much better, A for effort tho.
Yea its long but I mean where are the other guides? This forums a mess and theres no sticky thats what I was talking about

The stickies you all want regarding root already exist in the Development forum. Everything you need to know is contained in that thread.

E980H Basics (How to return back to Stock,Rom related stuff and Rooting)

Hey guys I am making this thread no help with everything I can to people with the E980H.
Returning back to Stock:
This can be really easy or really problematic if something is wrong with the phone, but here is what helped me even in those hard times.
1) You necessarily need one of the KDZ files with our modem wich they are the Mexican or the one from Panama you can find them here (http://lg-phone-firmware.com/index.php?id_mod=25).
2) Make sure you have a full battery always helps with the pesky LG Softwares.
3) Power-off your phones then go into Download Mode (+Volume + -Volume and insert USB cable while plugged in PC.).
4) In the Flash Tool make sure in the right upper corner you selected DIAG and in the left box 3GQCT.
5) Add the KDZ file to the flash tool (make sure you have a copy of the file because it erases the one you put in the program, helps fot those with slow connections as my self ).
6) Click on the Normal Web Upgrade Test box.
7)A new windows will pop in that one click Upgrade Start.
8) In select country choose Different Country and in language pick Spanish.
9) Wait for the S/W tool to finish.
10) After it is done go ahead and do a factory reset (-Volume + Power Button, hold them till factory reset text appear.).
That should cover the returning back to Stock part, I always do this process two time in a row just to make sure everything went down right but the second time instead of going to Emergency Mode, I choose to connect the phone in LG Software in the USB connection type menu.
Rooting:
1) Download this tool (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxGv8NM2g4yqUHRQdUF6S2J4QnM/edit?usp=sharing).
2) Turn on USB Debugging.
3) Make sure your phone is in MTP.
4) Open the Current Root.
5) Click Enter as prompted then wait for phone to reboot.
6) Update the SuperSu app
Pretty straight forward with this one. I recommend for a root explorer to use the ES file explorer it is free and has every tool you could possibly use.
Cleaning Bloat:
I would recommend just disabling the apps but if you like to delete them it is pretty easy using the ES file explorer.
1) Give root permissions to ES file explorer
2) Mount system as R/W
3) System apps are located at /system/app
4) Remove bloat make sure not to delete any LG or stock android app
That covers bloat
Roms:
This is a really everything can go south topic, so I am not responsible for anything you do to your phone. Personally none of the current ROMS beat Stock because they do not have all the camera options and i always had problems with the phone app but this can only be a problem of mine so feel free to try ever ROM compatible with our phone. Always make sure to make a Backup as soon as you can.
1) Download the next file (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxGv8NM2g4yqbFBMRG1kOUN3ck0/edit?usp=sharing)
Note: I use the old version because the new one gave me touch problems (Only in the recovery).
2) Put your phone in MTP in the USB connection menu.
3) Open Install_twrp.
5) Make sure you have the ROMS you are installing and the proper GAPPS (If wanted).
4) Click enter when prompted to go to recovery click yes. (If you click no dont worry just make sure you are rooted and download any reboot to recovery apps I like anreboot it has no weird permissions).
5) Select Wipe click on advance and wipe everything except for the SD card twice just to make sure (Know everything stored in the phone memory will be deleted).
6) Go back home.
7) Select install go to your file location and select your ROM and after your GAPPS.
8) Do a factory reset.
9) Flash you modem file to enable deep-sleep in some ROMS.
This covers almost everything I can help you with.
I remark I am not responsible for anything that happens to your phone everything of the above I have tested it with my phone but there is a chance a unicorn licked your USB connection and something goes wrong. None of the tools are my work just sharing.
I SPEAK SPANISH SO IF THERE IS SOMETHING THAT IS NOT CLEAR I CAN HELP YOU WITH IT IN SPANISH!!!

[HOW-TO][LS-980] Restore, Downgrade, Install CyanogenMod on LG G2

READ ME FIRST I am more than willing to help you guys, so if you have questions, please ask me via my facebook page, as I get notifications there instantly. http://facebook.com/vacationlandtech
Also of note, I no longer have a LG G2, and it has been a long time since I made this, if you can be as descriptive as possible when asking questions, that would help a lot. Also, because it has been quite a while since I've been in the G2 community, I'm not up to speed on anything newer than early November, 2014. I don't have experience with ZVE+, CM12+, CloudyG3, etc. so if you have problems with new ROMs and software, get help from the people who make/support those ROMs and software.
Good luck!!
So I've been helping around the forums with people trying to install CyanogenMod on the Sprint LG G2 (LS-980). I have done this successfully and will outline my steps to do so below. A small caveat – I've only gotten this to work the way I'll outline below. I've tried getting CyanogenMod after the LS980ZVA/C/D OTA and no matter what I do I cannot get it to work. That being said, let's get to it.
Edit: I've added videos!!
Part 1: http://youtu.be/NRwlxeUprZE
Part 2: http://youtu.be/7rohyf_W13k
Part 3: http://youtu.be/Uw3J5ZTb3ro
*REMEMBER* - Always create Nandroid backups before flashing a ROM or doing anything, really.
Required Materials (some of these files (LS980ZV8_13.TOT) are over 2GB, FYI):
EDIT: I have put all the required files into a .ZIP archive and uploaded it to Mega
There has been a report that that the CyanogenMod .zip in my file is corrupt. You can still download the file I uploaded, just get CyanogenMod from the link below.
Update: I uploaded *just* the LS980ZV8_13.TOT file to Mega. Here is the link (beware it's not zipped, it's over 3GB).
Code:
* LS980ZV8_13.TOT - [URL]http://storagecow.eu/Xda/LG%20G2/Stock/Sprint/LS980ZV8_13.zip[/URL]
* LGLS980_20130904_LGFLASHv151.dll - [URL]http://storagecow.eu/Xda/LG%20G2/Stock/Sprint/LGLS980_20130904_LGFLASHv151.dll[/URL]
* LG Flash Tool - [URL]http://storagecow.eu/Xda/LG%20Software/TOT%20FlashTool/Setup_LGFlashTool_1.8.1.1023.exe[/URL]
* MegaLock.dll - [URL]http://storagecow.eu/Xda/LG%20Software/TOT%20FlashTool/MegaLock.dll[/URL]
* IOroot25 - [URL]http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/ioroot/ioroot.zip[/URL]
* LG G2 (Verizon) USB Driver - [URL]http://tool.xcdn.gdms.lge.com/dn/downloader.dev?fileKey=UW00520120427[/URL]
* GApps - [url]https://s.basketbuild.com/gapps[/url]
Now, back up any files you want to keep from your phone. This process will remove EVERYTHING from your phone INCLUDING Internal Storage! Also install the USB Driver.
Let's get to it (please read all instructions before doing anything):
Resetting to Stock
Required files: LG Flash Tool, MegaLock.DLL, LS980ZV8_13.TOT, USB Drivers.
1. Install LG Flash Tool , but don't launch it yet!
2. Copy MegaLock.DLL to the root of the installation directory of LG Flash Tool.
3. Launch LG Flash Tool.
4. Check “Manual Mode”
5. Browse to the .DLL file you downloaded by clicking the “...” button to the right of the first text box.
6. Browse to the .TOT file (it'll have to be unzipped) by doing the same thing for the 2nd box.
7. Click okay, then click the green arrow at the top right of the window.
8. Wait for one of the boxes to turn green and say “Ready”
9. Turn off your phone.
10. Plug in the phone to your computer while holding the Vol+ key to put your phone in download mode.
11. Open Device Manager on your computer by pressing Win+R and typing “devmgmt.msc” without the quotes, then pressing enter.
12. Scroll down to “Ports” and expand it.
13. There will be an Android entry, right click it and select “Properties”
14. Select the Port Settings tab, and select Advanced.
15. Change the port number to 41.
16. You may have to unplug and reconnect your phone.
17. The box that said ready should now have some messages inside it (ie. “Waiting for connection.” and stuff about phone checks).
18. Allow the flash tool to do its job, after anywhere between 10 minutes and half an hour the phone will be done resetting. In my experience, the flash tool will always say there was an error after the phone reboots, this is because the phone reboots into Android, but the flash tool has done everything it needs, don't worry!
19. You can now unplug your phone and close LG Flash Tool.
20. Your phone is now on stock LG firmware LS980ZV8!
** - If you're going on to flash CyanogenMod, get through the initial set up, let the phone activate, but don't worry about getting apps or settings, they'll be gone after we flash CM.
Rooting
Required files: IOroot25, USB Drivers
** - I'm going to write this as if you've just reset to stock firmware.
1. Navigate to Settings > About Phone > Software Information
2. Tap on Build Number 7 times, or until there is a pop-up stating that “You are now a developer!”
3. Go back to Settings
4. Go into Developer Settings
5. Enable USB Debugging
6. Plug your phone into your computer.
** - If there is a RSA Fingerprint pop-up, accept it and check Remember this fingerprint
7. Navigate to Ioroot (you may have to extract/unzip the files) and execute root.BAT
8. Follow the on-screen instructions.
** - Note that Ioroot automatically backs up your EFS partition, make sure to keep these files in a safe location, as they can come in handy if something goes wrong.
9. After Ioroot is finished, you can close the program, unplug your phone and disable USB debugging.
10. You're now rooted, you may verify by downloading a Root Checker app from the Google Play Store.
Installing a Custom Recovery
Required Files: None
1. On your phone, navigate to the Google Play Store.
2. Search for FreeGee and install it.
3. Open FreeGee and allow it to download the device list.
4. After the download is finished, you will see a changelog list, close this.
5. Tap on install TWRP (or CWM if you're more comfortable with ClockWork Mod).
** - I recommend TeamWin Recovery Project for newer users because it is more end-user friendly, touch-capable, etc.
6. Wait for FreeGee to do its thing, then you have a custom recovery installed.
7. If you want to, let FreeGee reboot you into Recovery in order to verify.
Installing CyanogenMod 11
Required Files: CyanogenMod 11 ZIP, USB Drivers
** - Get the CyanogenMod 11 ZIP from https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=ls980 I recommend using the latest SNAPSHOT – get the NIGHTLY only if there are problems with the SNAPSHOT.
1. Place the CM 11 ZIP on the root directory of your internal storage.
2. Power off your phone (without it plugged in).
3. Turn on your phone holding PWR+VOL-Down until the screen says “Recovery mode”
** - The screen may say something about a factory reset, in this case press the power button 3 times and you'll be brought into recovery.
4. Tap on install
5. Scroll down to the CM 11 ZIP and tap it
6. Follow the instructions and when prompted to wipe the dalvik and cache, select yes.
** - you may have to do an advanced wipe and select everything except for internal storage, but do this only if CyanogenMod doesn't install properly.
7. You now have CyanogenMod 11 on your phone!
**- You will have to install GApps in order to access the Google Play Store and other Google Apps. You can download it using the browser on your phone or by transferring the .zip file to the root of your phone.
**- To install GApps just boot into recovery, select Install, and navigate to the GApps .zip. Swipe to install.
If you have any questions or any issues, just let me know. Not everything is accurate as I don't have access to Windows right now so I'm going based off memory. I plan on reinstalling Windows 8.1 Professional and making a video to go along with this. If at any point throughout this walkthrough you find inaccurate information or something goes wrong, let me know and I'll help out/update the article. Good luck!
Thanks so much for your sharing this. I have downgrade my phone from ZVD to ZV7 and get it rooted and CM11 installed. However, I found CM11 is not stable and my GPS module didn't work now. Could you recommend a everyday-use ROM with tethering capability? Many thanks.

I use CyanogenMod 11 as my everyday ROM, never have any issues (besides some personal preferences). To confirm that you have a good stable build, check your build number and info. I will post mine below for you to compare to.
To check your build number navigate to Settings > About Phone

AJ, I will do some research as to unlocking this phone. I am a bit busy right now but I'll reply by the end of the day.
This phone is already unlocked and works fine with Indian SIM
This phone is already unlocked and works fine with any Indian SIM. I Just want to migrate to CyanogenMod ROM.

I can't find any information regarding unlocking on CyanogenMod specifically, but maybe you could do the same steps at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2655133 after you follow my instructions to install CyanogenMod.
:Confused
This phone is already unlocked and works fine with any Indian SIM.

Never, I repeat NEVER flash or install ANYTHING that is not specifically for your phone!! This is the fastest way to brick your device, possibly permanently. I understand that you have already unlocked your phone, but you've done so on a stock ROM. What I was saying is follow my instructions to install CyanogenMod (the LS980 version) on your phone, then (re)unlock it following the instructions at the thread I linked to. I'm not sure how to unlock on CM11, but it can be done: LG G2 LS980 GSM UNLOCKED!: http://youtu.be/r8XCpm046-k

Thanks so much for your sharing this. I have downgrade my phone from ZVD to ZV7 and get it rooted and CM11 installed. However, I found CM11 is not stable and my GPS module didn't work now. Could you recommend a everyday-use ROM with tethering capability? Many thanks.

I did try and after a lot of got it to work CM11, you only need ZV8 modem/radio.
Had problems with the GPS even try a lot of apps none of them got it to work, then change the gps.conf file for the orginal LG conf and worked great. The only ROM that the GPS worked since the start was PA all of the others are based on CM so the file wont work, at least for me.
The gps.conf file its on "etc" folder.
CM really its great but to me Omni and most of all that i try in this days (trying to get a good GPS just to play Ingress) Its PA
Good luck

I've never had an issue with CyanogenMod. If you wipe before you install and don't do anything funky with it you shouldn't have a problem. Following my instructions CyanogenMod works flawlessly (for me at least).

How long ago did you have problems?
official.xian said:
So I've been helping around the forums with people trying to install CyanogenMod on the Sprint LG G2 (LS-980). I have done this successfully and will outline my steps to do so below. A small caveat – I've only gotten this to work the way I'll outline below. I've tried getting CyanogenMod after the LS980ZVA/C/D OTA and no matter what I do I cannot get it to work. That being said, let's get to it.
*REMEMBER* - Always create Nandroid backups before flashing a ROM or doing anything, really.
Required Materials (some of these files (LS980ZV8_13.TOT) are over 2GB, FYI):
Code:
* LS980ZV8_13.TOT - [URL]http://storagecow.eu/Xda/LG%20G2/Stock/Sprint/LS980ZV8_13.zip[/URL]
* LGLS980_20130904_LGFLASHv151.dll - [URL]http://storagecow.eu/Xda/LG%20G2/Stock/Sprint/LGLS980_20130904_LGFLASHv151.dll[/URL]
* LG Flash Tool - [URL]http://storagecow.eu/Xda/LG%20Software/TOT%20FlashTool/Setup_LGFlashTool_1.8.1.1023.exe[/URL]
* MegaLock.dll - [URL]http://storagecow.eu/Xda/LG%20Software/TOT%20FlashTool/MegaLock.dll[/URL]
* IOroot25 - [URL]http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/ioroot/ioroot.zip[/URL]
* LG G2 (Verizon) USB Driver - [URL]http://tool.xcdn.gdms.lge.com/dn/downloader.dev?fileKey=UW00520120427[/URL]
Good luck!

I am in the process of resetting everything back to stock. However, I was reading other articles and it mentioned that you must choose the correct files that correspond to either the 16gigs or 32 gigs. In this set of instructions however, it only provides users with one zv8 file for download. I just don't want to mess something up by using the incorrect files. Would appreciate someone's help. Thanks

I have seen what you're talking about elsewhere but I don't believe that this applies in this situation. I have the 32GB LS980, and haven't had an issue, still have all my storage space. From everything that I've gathered from the internet when learning how to do everything a wrote the size doesn't matter. If you're still concerned I can do some more digging, but I don't think you'll have a problem.

Hell yeah I will love to watch and follow that tutorial. I will wait for it. Thank you!

Explain like I'm a three year old, I beg of you.

I politely ask any person able to help to explain to me, like I am a three year old, exactly how to update a Samsung Glide from 4.0.4 to whatever newer version is able to work on the phone, that is rooted? AGAIN... I ask this politely.

No problem, we are all new at this once, right?
First Step: Downloads!
TWRP:
http://dualhoki.vim.hu/bubor/dev/twrp-i927/twrp-2.8.4-for_odin.tar.md5
ROM:
Here is a matter of preference. If you want the latest *working* version, you can upgrade to 5.0, but you lose the camera. I presume you want the camera to work, so I suggest Bubor's CM11 for KitKat. There are other good roms too, like PAC and SediRom, but we will start with Bubor's CM11.
http://dualhoki.vim.hu/bubor/dev/11.0/cm-11-20160126-UNOFFICIAL-i927.zip
http://dualhoki.vim.hu/bubor/dev/11.0/cm-11-20160126-UNOFFICIAL-i927.zip.md5sum
ODIN:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/7us5q44aab1xl9d/Odin304.zip
Second Step: Prepare.
I am presuming that you are using a Windows computer. If you are using a Linux computer, I can tell you what to do also, but these instructions are for Windows. I am also presuming that you have an external SD card in your phone, if you do not, go buy one and put it in your phone.
Unzip the Odin304.zip by right clicking on it and say unzip/extract, etc. If your Windows does not have this option, you need to download a program like winzip or 7zip so you can unzip this file. If you need those programs, they can be googled and downloaded.
Third step: Further preparation.
Turn on your phone and plug it into a usb cord and plug the usb cord into your computer. If you are using Windows, it will try to find drivers for the phone. It should be automatic and just work. If it does not, then you need the drivers, which are here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/0up21ccc9gajwjv/Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0.exe
*If you downloaded this file, just double click it like a program, it should open and install drivers for your phone. Do not do this unless your computer cannot find drivers for your phone!
Fourth step: Charge your phone.
Plug in your phone and FULLY charge it. ALL the way to 100% CHARGED. No exceptions. No shortcuts. Do it. Then UNPLUG YOUR PHONE AND TURN IT OFF.
Fifth step: Put TWRP on your phone.
a. Your phone should now be unplugged and off. Open the ODIN folder that you unzipped earlier and double click on ODIN to open the program.
b. Click on the PDA button ( you and I both know that your phone is not a PDA, this is not a typo ) and it will open a browser. Find the twrp-2.8.4-for_odin.tar.md5 file and select it. It should now fill in the blank line next to PDA with this info.
c. WHILE HOLDING THE UP VOLUME BUTTON ON YOUR PHONE, press and hold the power button. When you see "SAMSUNG" you can release the power button, but KEEP HOLDING THE UP BUTTON, untill you see a yellow triangle and warning notice. If you hold too long, that is okay as it will take you straight to the download mode with the green android that says "ODIN" at the top and "Downloading" in the middle. If you got stopped at the yellow warning/triangle, press up again to go to download mode.
d. Plug your phone into the usb, and the usb into your computer.
e. In the Odin program, press start.
You should now see a serries of verbage going by on the left, at the top a green bar may fill in, and hopefully, in the end it says "success" or "pass". Your phone should reboot all by itself. If ODIN says fail, ask for further instructions. If passed, close Odin.
Sixth step: Put your CM11 files on your phone.
Your phone should have rebooted and looks just like it did before, now powered on, and in your stock Ice Cream Sandwich firmware. As with any file transfer, plug your USB into the phone and computer. Drag the CM11 files to the phone. Anywhere will do, but if you have an external SD card in your phone, I recommend you put it there.
Seventh Step: Boot into TWRP.
a. Turn off your phone.
b. Unplug the USB.
c. HOLD THE DOWN VOLUME BUTTON and press the POWER BUTTON. When you see "Samsung" release the POWER BUTTON, but keep holding the VOLUME DOWN BUTTON. At the top of the screen, white letters should say something like "entering recovery".
d. When you see "Team Win Recovery Project" release the down volume button.
Eighth step: Make a backup!
a. Press "Backup" button on screen.
b. Check all checkboxes (system, cache, data, boot, Android Secure)
c. Press "Storage: sdcard (xxxx mb)" bar.
d. Select "External_sd" to choose to backup to your external sd card.
e. Slide the swipe bar to the right to backup. This will take a few minutes, with progress bar.
NOTE: if the screen dims, when you touch it, you will see a TWRP lock icon, swipe right to unlock it.
f. When backup is completed, it will say "reboot system", do not click that. Click the "home" icon in the lower left corner.
g. Click the "Wipe" button.
h. Swipe right to factory reset.
i. Click the "home" icon in the lower left corner.
j. Click the "install" button.
k. At the top, click on the "Storage: sdcard (xxxx mb)" bar.
l. Select "External_sd"
m. choose the cm-11-20160126-UNOFFICIAL-i927.zip
n. When that is done, click on the "reboot system" button.
The system will reboot. You should now see CM11's boot screen. The first boot takes a bit of time.
Ninth step: Thank Bubor.
a. Log into XDA.
b. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/captivate-glide/development/dev-cm-11-0-t2802184
c. Slap every thanks button that is for a post by Bubor untill it tells you that you cannot slap any more thanks buttons (that is only 8 thanks per day).
Tenth step: Enjoy your phone!
....I think you know how to do that.....
If you have ANY questions, please just post them here and we will see if we can answer them.
I am thanking you so very much! Also... I do apologize for such a time lapse in my reply. Life happened.
I followed the above procedure and have CM11 installed. But my problem is I can't use my SIM card anymore because it's like my phone doesn't see it at all. I checked my settings and saw that I no longer had an IMEI number. I used the restore feature and the stock ROM had an IMEI number. What should I do? I saw a few threads about using a program to rewrite the IMEI or others to copy the file containing the IMEI but I wasn't really sure what I should do or how to copy files to and from that partition from my computer. I should add that the phone is unlocked.

Great question, and an interesting problem!
First, I am really glad that you followed the instructions and made a backup! It is good to know that you can always go back to the way it was.
I recommend that you download another rom from the developer section here, such as Sedi-rom, omni-rom, etc., and try flashing that. If you flash one of those roms, does your IMEI stay for those roms?
Try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789727
You can do steps 7 through 10 with any of the roms in the developer thread. If this other rom works, you can use it, or download others and try them. If the SediRom does not work also, then we will need to sit down and figure this out.
I really appreciate the fact that you're here to help.
I downloaded and installed SediRom 2.1.2 and my IMEI still shows as "Unknown." However this time I should add there is a serial number, which I don't believe was present in CM11 or in the stock ROM, although I'm not sure if that's at all significant. I made an external backup of the efs file from the stock ROM, is there some way I could just reinstall CM11 and replace/overwrite the efs to give it an IMEI number? I'd really like to use CM11 if possible, I was enamored by how good it looked and how functional it was, especially since the last time I tried CM a long time ago I didn't have such a good opinion of it. Plus the bootloader is friggin sweet !
I recently got the phone unlocked off eBay, so I don't know its past history but I was able to access the network when I had the SIM card in prior to initially installing CM11 but not afterwards. I'm trying to use a T-Mobile SIM but like I said I was able to successfully access the network prior to installing CM11. But the IMEI doesn't show at all regardless if the SIM is in at all.
Is there some kind of different hardware/firmware like in a newer slightly different version of the phone that came out resulting in compatibility issues? I'm not the most experienced but I've dipped by toes in this before, so I would be willing to go the extra mile if it meant I could get CM11 to work, because honestly it looked like everything I could ever want from this phone with a good looking theme too...
Do you have a full backup of the efs partition?
If so it should be enough to restore it.

Yes I believe so. I used the procedure from this thread to back it up. I tried copying the efs directly over using the built in file manager with root access, but when I try to copy the entire efs folder over I get a non-descriptive error "this operation has failed." I tried copying the nv_data.bin folder by itself to overwrite the one currently there (which copied successfully), then rebooted the phone but the IMEI still shows as "unknown." Do I need to copy the efs while the phone is in recovery mode or via PC or something because of file in-use errors or something else I don't know about?

Well restoring efs have to be done in recovery only! Do not try to do this while android is running!!
To be honest the absolute best way is having a dd partition dump of the whole partition. When you have followed the mentioned guide do you have used also dd like this?
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 of=/storage/external_SD/efs.img
I don't know if copying the efs folder alone would work.. better is restoring the whole partition if possible. Do you have such kind of backup?

Many thanks bubor! Renaming worked like a charm.
FYI, I tried re-downloading it, but that didn't seem to work yesterday.
I really appreciate all of your work, everything is working great.
Thanks for the quick responses.
All the best!
So I'm really late here but the phone got thrown to the backburner and I forgot about it. Lol but anyways, I created the EFS backups using dd like it said, but I'm not sure how to restore them? Do I unpack them and then use ADB to move them there? I'm kind of confused. Also, for some reason going through the TWRP to the stock ROM doesn't let me root it, it crashes every time I get to that screen, don't know if that's important to the operation. Hope I can finally get this stupid thing working right with the custom ROM...

Okay so I used TWRP to do a factory restore, flashed SuperUser, then flashed CM11, went into TWRP and did the terminal commands you listed in the guide for backing up the EFS... to no avail. Would it be better to copy the EFS while I'm still on the rooted stock ROM using a terminal app? I don't understand what the problem is...
