[Discussion] how many of you use lockscreen widgets? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi, just want to know how many of you guys feel that lockscreen widgets are useful and use them. I have never used them till now. Let us know.

Personally, I use dash clock widget with a bunch of extensions. Most of the info I like is all on 1 widget. Missed calls, texts, Google voice mails, weather, battery, BBS, gmail and a few others. As far as other widgets go I also use Google sound search as well as the "my work clock" widget. I can punch in and out without unlocking the phone. Quick and easy:thumbup:
That's really all I use but it all comes in handy I think.

i only use the origin clock

I use DashClock and Flipboard. This thread would be better with a poll FYI.

Only missed it widget

Just use the clock...

I have one, and it's the camera. I find lock screen widgets annoying.

I never got the utility of the lockscreen in the first place. If your phone is not password/pin/whatever locked, why would you want to touch the screen 1-2 times more just to get to the main screen with all your usual apps/widgets or to the full menu?
And all the info you could put on your lockscreen, you can put on your main screen in a better, more personalized way.
I tried a few times to use a lockscreen (a total of a few weeks over the last 2.5 years), but I always deactivated it after a few days.
Just my 2 cents.

i only use them by accident and that suxx. me wants them gone for good

Dashclock is basically what the lock screen should be all about - an extendable piece of quick info.

I just use dashclock and poweramp. I tried to use calculator but when i was using it the screen turned off everytime. So i gave up.

I guess most of them thinks it's useless. Even I feel the same. I don't understand why Google introduced it.

Probably because they needed to ship some features with the N4 and didn't have much else to present. The whole 4.2 series looks like a cherry picked filler between the JB and next major release.

I use Dashclock, the stock camera widget, and a flashlight widget on a regular basis. The lock screen widget feature certainly isn't groundbreaking or anything and it does seem like a bit of an after thought (for example, Dashclock is what the stock clock widget should have been as others have mentioned). I do like the idea and see it as a quick intuitive way for getting to things quickly without having to unlock your phone first. Sure you had the shortcuts on the lockscreen before that would take you directly to the camera and what not but with the lock screen widgets the operation seems a little faster, more stream lined and fluid.
Really though, I don't see why you would want more than 3 lock screen widgets. There is the main home page one that you see whenever you wake up the phone, which most people have either the stock clock widget or Dashclock and is therefore mostly for informational purposes (do you have any new emails, text messages, time/date, battery percentage, etc). Then from there you can swipe to the left or the right to easily get to the other two widgets which are more functional in the sense that you can interact with them (camera, calculator, flashlight, etc.). If you have a 4th one you have to swipe a second time and at that point you have to wonder "why not just unlock the phone in the first place".

i just hate them i use pattern lock and while i try to unlock the screen moves arrfgghh thts soo fukn irritating :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I used to disable them with Lockscreen Policy, then I started using Dashclock.

[Q]Calendar widget?

I just got ADW launcher and I need a calendar widget to replace the stock one.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
I'd like one similar to the stock month calendar widget. One that shows the whole month, some kind of bullet or marker on days that have an event, and some kind of text box showing the event for the day you touch.
Thanks.

I second that question/request. I wonder if theres a way to use the stock one with other launchers, it seems to be the only stock widget thats missing if i remember correctly.

Actually there's a couple more I need to find replacements for too.
The task manager widget that displays the number of active apps and takes you to the task manager if pressed.
And the double clock widget that will let you display two different clocks, with time zone and location of your choosing displayed.

Thanks! I'm trying it out right now. There's still a few things from the stock one I miss though. It doesn't have a widget with a text box on the bottom that can show the whole event. Instead it shows small text in the day box that gets cut off, and you have to click on that day to see the whole event title. The tasks seem to be a little limited too. Like you can't add a location that you can navigate to later. I'm gonna keep playing with it though. Thanks.

yeah I saw Go launcher yesterday during my search and told myself I gotta try that one. Looks like a lot of good stuff on that one. I especially like that task manager widget that they have.
Thanks for the recommendation AllGamer! I'm using Go Launcher now and loving it.
lilant510, if you're still missing stuff from the stock, I suggest you try that one. Has everything I was missing from stock and more. Better than ADW IMO.
AllGamer,
Do you use the Go launcher toggle widget? Does it work ok for you?
When I press the GPS toggle, it goes to the GPS settings menu, instead of just automatically toggling it off/on.
The 4g toggle sometimes does and sometimes doesn't work also. Seems to depend on if the wifi is toggled on with it or not.
Wondering if anyone else is having the same problem.
i do not use the Go Toggle
because the ROM already has all the on/off switches i need build in

they also have a Transparent skin for the Go Calendar Widget, it makes it really elegant
I've used literally ever launcher available to date and imho Go launcher is the absolute best! And all the Widgets that come along with it put it over the top. There are so many skins fir the Widgets and I use the calander widget which is my favorite.

Lock Screens

Was curious if there were any good lock screen apps. I.e. clock, text pop ups, custom lock screen, (I already have that option but haven't found a good one yet) etc.
Ooops, didn't realize I was in dinc2 general. If someone can move this to q&a would be much appreciated

I really like WidgetLocker (~$2 I think). It allows you to basically make your lockscreen into a homescreen, adding whatever widgets/shortcuts/etc you want, and choosing your custom unlock method as well. I've been using it for over a year now. Only downside is that the more widgets you have, the more memory used up, so on my phone I only have a few, on my tab I have probably 10 on my lockscreen.

[Q] Calendar in notification bar?

I did google a little bit but most things are about calendar notifications, I'm lookin more for an actual calendar I can put in my notifications bar.
I just switched from iPhone so I'm actually lookin for something like this. modmyi.com/images/joshua/calendarfornc.jpg
I think you'd be better off finding a calendar widget to your liking. I'm not aware of any notification panels that have widgets embedded in them.

I agree with Spycedtx. Use a widget instead. If you want to reach the calendar widget from any screen you could add it to a SwipePad panel that has a widget launcher. It works very well for me with a quick settings widget and a note widget.
Thanks guys
Cool the swipe pad will work and has more uses too. Maybe it's cause I was an iphone guy but I'm not a fan of widgets yet. Maybe in time

The I phone has you stuck in the past with old out dated features lol, your not used to making things easy and the way you want like an android.
I just don't like a lot of garbage on my home screen, looks too cluttered... but as I said maybe in time. Any how noob question, how do I mark my post solved?

I also like empty screens. But the bonus is you have several. My main has an analog clock just to look pretty. One page over I have a calendar widget. Quick swipe and back if I need to see it.

How would you change Samsung's Touchwiz UI for your Note 2?

I'm curious to know what you'd change in the latest version of Samsung's TouchWiz UI for the Note 2. If you could design the next version, what would you add, remove, or tweak? I'm curious to see what the fans, and non-fans, would change.
For me, I would definitely want more functionality from the lock screen in the next revision. Having 5.5' of real screen estate means a lot of space for us to add extra info such as email/message content, info of last dialled/received call, more access to favourite apps, etc. I'd also like to be able to pull down the notification centre in the lock screen and be able to access the relevant notification from there. Lastly, I think the stock icons could go for a revision to give a more high-tech futuristic feel instead of the much cartoonish appearance it has now.
I'd make it look like Apex and just as customizable!
Done.
I would like a 5x5 or 4x5 grid size on the home screen,
Auto correct on the keyboard,
Resizable widgets (like we had on touchwiz 4.0),
Better Facebook integration,
And a few more s pen features
Cheers
Corey

I know I've probably said this before in another thread, but I really think that TouchWiz (and I mean the whole framework, not just the home launcher) on the Note 2 should be, and should have been from the get go, a hybrid ROM with PAD and PAL (per-app density and per-app layout) options baked right in. I mean, let's face it, some UI layouts of certain apps are just simply better and easier to use than others. YouTube and Gmail, for examples, are simply better experiences in a tablet layout.
Another thing that would have been nice to have would be capacitive buttons that respond to the SPen, instead of having to use gestures (just a minor niggle though).
Hello,
I would love to see a scrollable favorites contact widget with direct dial function (like HTC has.. )
I would lose the freaking gingerbread theme is all the Samsung phones....touchwiz and the whole framework is nice but looks totally dated to 3 years ago.

If my phone was locked, I wouldn't want someone to be able to pick it up and read my notifications without having to enter the PIN/password etc.

New UI for E-mail
The black UI on the e-mail is shocking. Can never read e-mails outside. THis should change to white, or atleast have the option to change to white.
I would make it able to lock in reverse portrait mode.

They should get rid of that ridiculous amount space berween the dock and the app shortcuts. I know theres a mod but they should change that. And ofcourse incread grid size especially with the columns so we can add more folders or apps in a single row. Also add the ability to be able to add folders within the app drawer or at the least allow to reorganize the apps to our liking. Also it would be nice if we could have the option to choose the folder icon background.

I like the TW UI, it's a lot easier and simpler than other branded UI's. Just some things,
1- Bigger grid size options, I mean, up to 8x8.
2- Enabling custom icons.
3- Scrollable dock.
4- Re-sizable icons, including dock.
5- Vertical menu in App drawer (I am not talking about the list view)
6- Not a must, but it'd be cool if they could allow a custom background for App drawer. I kinda like it and miss it from bloated Go Ex.

Pop ups and multi windows are different in this case !

Using V10 Second Screen App Shortcut for Quick Popup Widgets

Using the app called Popup Widget, I'm able to quickly place any kinds of widget directly on the second screen, since we can easily move back and forth app shortcuts from the second screen and home screen, but that mainly applies to the stock launcher only, tried with Nova, but didn't work. Anyways, here's a video showing an example of creating widget and placing it into second screen and works fine.
https://youtu.be/mX-diQEANw8
The app is called Popup Widget, and can be found on the Play Store.
Credits @klark1kent for the idea of implementing custom widgets on the second screen using Zooper and Tasker apps. If you want, you can head over to his thread in the link below for an in-depth guide using Zooper Widgets
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v10/themes-apps/screen-custom-app-icons-widget-t3269726
Update: So, I've created a new video that actually allows you to add more icons/shortcuts to the second screen. So take a look over at the link below.
https://youtu.be/nuo0IAhwUR0
The app is called SiMi Folder Widget, and can be found on the Play Store.

The idea was actually from your thread, so got to thank you for that idea that you actually came up, and I was looking around for other alternatives instead of using Zooper and Tasker, and Popup Widget sort of solves the issue for me. And also having to place any kind of widgets on your second screen really helps in situations where you wouldn't want to get kicked out of other apps, let's say if you are messaging and you want to quickly see some new tweets to freshen up.

That's exactly what I said in thr original thread. I used popup widget also but hey I'm happy you liked the idea and clearly I didn't create a guide initially because I wanted to get it out to the community as soon as possible anyway I agree the options are endless... The only thing about just using popup which I alluded to in the other post is that it wasn't working with other launchers and zooper allows you to create your own widgets and add them to popup instead of relying on system default widgets. Let's keep the innovations coming though but yeah I was surprised you essentially jacked the idea with zero credit. Thanks for making it right

As those are LG-based Widgets, which is lockdown only to stock launcher, Popup Widget can't recognize it as a proper widget, only universal ones work.
Hence sadly it's not possible to actually get those into the second screen.
