[Q] Rooting a KFHD 8.9 running version 8.3.1 from scratch - 8.9" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just purchased a used KFHD 8.9 and would like to root. I would like to use Prokennexusa "How To" for Newbs but have a few questions before proceeding. I'm a brand new XDAD member and literally spent hours researching this site and others.
I don't really care with version of the Kindle I'm running. If I could get this to run Jelly Bean and nuke the Kindle OS it wouldn't be the end of the world. But I'm not in a crazy rush either, and am willing to wait if I need to.
1. Can I root with version 8.3.1 running, or do I need to restore to factory settings while offline and block OTA updates before I can start Prokennexusa's Newb instructions?
2. Are the KFHD 7 and 8.9 interchangeable in terms of how the root process works?
Apologies if I'm threadjacking on my first day or asking questions that have been answered in technical language I didn't understand, and thanks in advance for any help.

Rooting Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Version 8.3.1
I rooted my Amazon Kindle Fire HD version 8.3.0 and along comes a new update 8.3.1 and it overwrites my rooted device. I have talked with two guys at RootPro.com and neither of them had a solution for rooting the new version. If someone comes up with the solution, I would be interested.

Just curious, did you simultaneously disable all OTA updates when you rooted? I may have misunderstood posters on some other threads, but it seems Amazon has found away to get the root-killing OTA's on Kindles that have been set to disable them...

I also have kfhd 8.9 running on version 8.3.1. I am trying to install 2nd-bootloader for custom ROMs. When running adb command I get the error that no device found even though I can get into fastboot. I don't know what to do. I believe that I need to be root to use adb and for it to recognize my device? Maybe need to install root and also driver for usb? I'm so confused. However, this thread makes it appears that I can't root the device for my version of kfhd. Any advice is appreciated if I need to be root and if I also need to find drivers as well even though I have downloaded the latest android sdk.

You can root your device on 8.3.1 I did it last night.
The following assumes windows 7.
First, you need to have adb enabled on the KFHD.
Once you've done that, connect the device and try adb devices. If you get an empty list you need to have the correct drivers installed. That took me a while. In the device manager on your pc uninstall the kfhd. Google kindle fire hd usb driver and you will go to an amazon page that gives you instructions as to how to install the correct adb driver for the kfhd (you have to run a program called Kindlefireusb.exe (or something like that). That will then install the correct driver. Now reconnect your device and type adb devices again once the devices have been recognised. The list of devices should no longer be empty but should show the serial number of your device.
Next you can go on to root the device - i used the Sony experia method, although I had to do it twice.
Once you're rooted, then you can install twrp using the instructions on the second bootloader thread.
I'm on my mobile at the moment, I will update this post a little later on from my pc with more detail.

I appreciate your reply. I've never rooted anything, so just wanted to request that nothing be taken for granted. From what I understand, people who know what they're doing have bricked kindle hd's.
I was able to google "enable adb kindle fire 8.9" and got instructions saying to go to settings, then security.
But a couple of quick questions:
I wasn't sure what this meant:
"connect the device and try adb devices. If you get an empty list you need to have the correct drivers installed. That took me a while. In the device manager on your pc uninstall the kfhd."
Is the Sony experia method different from Prokennexusa's "how to" for noobs?
Also, is twrp the auto update disabler?
I'll hold off on doing anything until everything's confirmed.
Thanks again,
XP

From there type "adb devices" (without quotes ofcourse). If you see something like this:
Then download this and install it:

If you installed that before or just installed it now you should get a screen like this (but with a different serial number)(i blocked mine ;D):
If you did, you have successfully got ADB to connect to your kindle!

No, TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) is a custom recovery for android for installing custom ROMs like CyanogenMod. To install that go here:
Install 2nd-Bootloader with TWRP
Credit to Hashcode.

Excellent summary and thanks for saving me the time in doing it!
Only one comment - the above will only work if the location of adb.exe is in your PATH for your computer (else you will have to run adb from wherever it is installed in your computer, which may be C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools which is a bit of a pain!).
Good luck!

If you go to CM10, then there is no chance of an OTA update. If you stay on stock, there is a risk of OTA update. Lizzord in his ROM (here) thinks he has blocked OTA. I thought I had blocked OTA with KindleFreePro but that didn't work. I personally don't see any need to stay with the Stock ROM, with its bloatware, now that the CM10 ROm is doing so well.

Apd, thank you for much appreciated advice. I was able to get the amazon drivers installed and adb to recognize the device. I tried dugoy13's link to install root using option 1 and then followed Hashcode's instruction to put cynogenmod on my kindle. I only see few apps installed just the really basic stuff. Where's play store? The google search bar I have don't have the mic icon on it either. How do I go about installing apps?

What a huge post - not entirely necessary! Anyway, if your app drawer doesn't include Google Play, try reinstalling the google apps (i.e. reinstall the gapps ...zip in TWRP) as they include Google Play. You will need to manually install some of the other google apps (such as maps) using google play.
There's no audio input on CM10.1 on the KFHD8.9 yet - only audio output. Hashcode is working on it.

Apd I cleaned up my messages, it was sort of a stream of questions that I resolved myself and felt people should know since I asked. But it is a mess As for reinstalling gapps, do I need to uninstall, wipe clean anything or just go to install and select gapps to install? Thanks.

No I would simply reinstall the gapps (from within TWRP). it might be an idea to wipe the cache and the dalvik afterwards but do not wipe anything else as you risk wiping the apps you have just installed!
PS Thanks for cleaning up the thread!

Not a problem, didn't realize I can edit past posts, I'll keep it cleaner in the future. Thanks again, reinstall gapps file worked!

Apd one more thing. I know that I need to wipe the "System and "Factory Reset" (no idea what it's doing behind the scene) when installing from amazon stock. But if Hashcode release a new build with me having his previous build, should I wipe anything before installing his new cm10.1 build? Do i just select the Install from TWRP for the new build? If there is no new gapps, I don't need to reinstall gapps correct?
There is also option of side load(dirty flash?) which also can be done in TWRP. So it's confusing which way to proceed. So essentially what are the steps for installing a new build? I think my install from stock did not install gapp correctly because I installed both at the same time instead of one at a time such as the cm10.1 build reboot and install gapps and reboot. Thanks for all your tips.

Factory reset: erase all user data and apps but preserve the ROM itself.
Wipe system: wipes the ROM including apps and userdata but preserves the content of the internal SD card
Dirty flash: flash a new ROM over an existing one without performing a wipe beforehand. Still recommended to wipe cache and dalvik (don't ask what they are (Google!), just do it!)
Sideload: can mean many things but in this context usually means pushing a file via adb
When a new ROM is published, if it is an iterative change to the existing ROM (ie no major changes to the underlying ROM) then it is often safe to dirty flash but if you have problems then you should wipe and reflash the ROM. The creator of the ROM will usually say if it is safe to do a dirty flash. If you dirty flash you will not need to reinstall gappps or other apps. If you wipe you will.
Some tips. Before flashing a new ROM, take a backup in TWRP. This takes some time but it means that if something goes wrong with the the new ROM you have a backup of your entire previous setup.
Also, download (and buy) a copy of Titanium Backup and learn how to use it. This allows you to backup all your apps and their settings in one go so if you have to wipe, you can reinstall all your apps and their settings in one go. It very rarely causes problems. It is not recommended to reinstall system apps or settings using titanium unless the ROM is very similar to the previous ROM.

Awesome. You are a very informative. Thank you. From what you say, the TWRP's Install option seems very similar to TWRP's Sideload option then. I use adp to push the zip files to my kindle and then in TWRP perform the install operation. If I go into TWRP's Sideload option, I presume it will get the zip file from my pc and install it and thus saving me an extra step.

Much easier to install than sideload . Just copy the file from your pc to the tablet before you reboot into Twrp. Our better still, download the file directly from the Web on to your tablet and then reboot into twrp!

[Q] I deleted Gtalk, Talk, etc (the talk services) help

HELP! I have Root Explorer installed on my rooted Evo (2.1) no custom ROM. Like an idiot, I uninstalled gtalkservice.apk, talk.apk and talkprovider.apk. Fortunately I moved them to my sd card so they didn't disappear. Of course, now I keep getting that "com.google.process.gapps" error message and I haven't been able to download apps from the market all day. I tried reinstalling the apps with both package installer and with app installer to no avail. Someone please tell me how to fix my idiotic mistake! Thanks!

Is your phone rooted? If so, hopefully you have installed a custom recovery and you can flash the google apps file from the CM6 thread. If you are not rooted there are 2 options:
1 - Rerun the RUU. This means you'll lose all data OR
2 - ADB install the missing apps, this is more complicated as you need several things, like the android development kit, the driver and the files you took off.

How do i root my incredible?

How do i root my droid incredible s?
I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOU FOLLOWING THIS PROCESS.
First of all, you must check if your smart-phone is on S-ON or S-OFF version. 1 – Open menu and then to Settings, you will see ‘Applications’ Go to it and turn off Fast Boot. 2 – You must turn off your smart-phone. 3 -Now you’re going to boot your smart-phone into Hboot. You can easily do that by holding the volume down button while turning the device back on. 4 – Most likely, you will see a white screen and you will have to look on the first line to see which version your smart-phone is depending upon. Your phone should be on S-OFF version if you want to root your phone and flash custom ROM's.
To get S-Off you need to use an XTC Clip or wait for AlphaRevX
Please, you must follow these instructions to the letter.
Now that your Smart-phone is of S-OFF version and you’re all set to root your phone.
- Download Gingerbreak APK - Make sure USB debugging is enabled - Make sure you have an SD card (formatted and) inserted - Get the APK on the phone somehow, and install it - Open the APK, press the root button - Wait a few minutes. If there are no problems, the device will reboot (note that the reboot itself can take like 10 minutes due to cache wipe) - Make sure the Superuser app is install and working - Optional: Install BusyBox from Market (I personally prefer the stericsson installer) - Optional: Uninstall GingerBreak, you don't need it on your phone anymore
Get CWM (Clock Work Mod) on the device. - download ROM Manager from the market. - Open the app and Flash/install Clock Work Mod Recovery.

FYI this is the HTC Incredible forum not the Incredible S forum.
1. You're in the wrong forum, try searching a little harder
2. I'll be nice and point you to where you should be asking this question, or you can browse around and find the thread that will give you a guide to rooting.

This is the only way to root gingerbread on the dinc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400
Unrevoked does not work on gingerbread for our phones.
..............
when i try to root with unrEVOked i get "is your firmware to new". not sure what im doing wrong. I've even tried showing it the custom clockwork mod .img
May I tag along?
I have decided to root my Dinc. Currently on 2.2
I am getting this constant notice to install the System Update 4.08.605.2.
The message states that it is ready to install.
Can I choose "install later" and then proceed and root with unrevoked ?
Or will the update install first, when my phone reboots again?
Is this a valid concern ?

If you want to root your phone do not accept the update. Root it first, go here and follow the instruction www.unrevoked.com after that you can flash a custom Gingerbread ROM. Do some research before flashing anything, patience for this pays off believe me!
I've done considerable research. Enough to learn that I do not want this update before rooting my phone.
My concern is that the update has been downloaded onto my phone and awaiting a reboot to install. Is that possible ?
When I go to: menu-settings-about phone-system updates, I see this:
Android Software Update
(4.08.605.02)
Downloaded and Verified 87.7 MB
Bla-Bla-Bla......
Restart & Install
Can I proceed with root anyway ?

Help, I have a problem...
I ran the Unrevoked3 and got the "your done" message. My phone was fully booted.
Everything appeared to be normal.
I installed Titanium, that tells me I have root access.
However, I cant get into clockworkmod.
I can't do anything with rom manager.
Then I remembered that I did not format my sd card to fat32.
Here is where I messed up.
I copied the contents of the sdcard to my desktop, formatted to fat32, then copied contents from desktop file back to sdcard.
Then I ran the unrevoked3 again. It did not finish, instead it ended with the "firmware too new" message. The phone was still in HBOOT.
Next, somehow I inadvertantly selected "clear storage" and pressed the power button.
When I was booted up again, all of my downloaded apps were gone, as well as my contacts and settings.
I figured at this point I might as well do a factory reset too and just start over from the beginning.
After the reset, I was surprised to see I still had my email settings.
I went into HBOOT, still S-off.
Rebooted and ran Unrevoked3 again and got the same results as above.
All seems to be ok, except I'm not rooted and I can't access the Wifi setup.
What should I do now ?
From what I gather, you are still s-off.
What troubles were you having in accessing CWM? What issues arose in rom manager? Did you also have superuser installed (requirement to use rooted apps)? Please elaborate.
SINCE the factory reset, have you re-downloaded Rom Manager and do you have access to the Android Market? You may want to re-download rom manager so you can perform a backup of your stock rom (i.e. prior to flashing roms) once you set up your phone how you want due to your accidental factory reset.
I say "may" because the same backup process can be performed via recovery. Recovery can be downloaded from: "http://pvillecomp.com?page_id=128"
Once downloaded, you must install the file via hboot, so reboot and accept the update and DO NOT let your phone off.
To address your present situation,
Were your contacts stored in gmail OR Verizon backup assistant? If so, those are easily retrieved. You may want them in gmail now on to avoid this from occurring in the future.
What issues are you having with accessing wifi set up? Are you able to access it at all via Settings/Wireless Networks?
Thanks in advance for your help.
I am still s-off
When I first initiated the unrevoked process, my phone indicated an “unable to read file” error when the process was “flashing clockworkmod”
Rom manager failed to flash and “forced close”
Wi Fi displays “error”, can't access via settings.
I was working on my PC. Then since my last post, I tried this on my laptop last night.
This time, the unrevoked batch process indicated “Success !” and then “Done”
My phone did not display any error messages and finished in a black screen with orange scrolling text and then the phone rebooted.
Wi-Fi still displays “error” when I tap it.
I downloaded Rom manager and initiated Flash ClockworkMod recovery, and it completed without error. Current recovery: ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 ( I did not Erase Recovery first )
I have Superuser Permission app in the drawer, but not Superuser. Neither shows up in Manage applications.
I also download Titanium backup. It shows Root access: OK (BusyBox 1.18.4-Titanium from app)
I don't know if that indicates that I am rooted or not.

Congrats your rooted! Not sure what the issue is with your wifi tho. Try a custom Rom/Kernel and see if that fixes the issue.
We are talking about the same Superuser, which is great cuz your rooted apps work. The wifi issue should not be happening although that occurred with the accidental clear storage. If you plan on flashing a rom then this will not be present as you will format data, cache, etc and essentially wipe your phone to the point of a clean state. You are definitely rooted as you have CWM 5.0 as your recovery.
Have you retrieved your contacts? Prior to flashing ANYTHING that involves wiping in recovery or rom manager, ensure you have them saved in gmail OR Verizon backup.

What troubles were you having in accessing CWM? What issues arose in rom manager? Did you also have superuser installed (requirement to use rooted apps)? Please elaborate.

Superuser is running and other apps ask for SU permission
SINCE the factory reset, have you re-downloaded Rom Manager and do you have access to the Android Market? You may want to re-download rom manager so you can perform a backup of your stock rom (i.e. prior to flashing roms) once you set up your phone how you want due to your accidental factory reset.
I say "may" because the same backup process can be performed via recovery. Recovery can be downloaded from: "http://pvillecomp.com?page_id=128"
Once downloaded, you must install the file via hboot, so reboot and accept the update and DO NOT let your phone off.

I did re download Rom manager and flash CWM with success. I understand I need to backup my current rom, but I don't know what you mean by "recovery". I am not very comfortable knowing how to proceed. I appreciate your help.
To address your present situation,
Were your contacts stored in gmail OR Verizon backup assistant? If so, those are easily retrieved. You may want them in gmail now on to avoid this from occurring in the future.

When I tap on Wi-Fi, it immediately displays "error". In settings, "Error" is shown under Wi-Fi. Add locations is grayed out
Yes, I am saying that a custom Rom/Kernel might fix your WiFi issue.
As for backing up thru recovery it mean booting into CWM, and making a backup. I do this instead of backing up thru Rom Manager because I have had some issues with Rom Manager.

Security update with root

So, I'm new to rooting and this is my first Nexus device.
I'm loving it and all the options but now I'm getting a notification to update.
I see all the forums about hooking it up to a computer and using commands to do it all and then rerooting.
I was looking for an easier way.
I bought a Nexus 5 to play with because I liked this one so much and when OTAs came up, it would let me download them and reboot into CWM recovery and ask if I want to flash the ZIP.
This one just boots into TWRP (No CWM for 5x) and does nothing.
I found the update as a zip here:
<https://gist.github.com/jduck/744a6c8a9042e9c792b7>
My question is: can I just download it and use TWRP to flash it or is the sequence of commands on a computer the only way to do it?
Thank you in advance for your help and I apologize for my ignorance.
Gotta start somewhere though, right?
Hi !
I personnaly use NRT from Wugfresh for my Nexus 5x and my Nexus 7 2013, both rooted.
In "model type", select Nexus 5x and your build.
In "Restore/upgrade/downgrade", select "device is on/normal", then click "Flash stock+ unroot".
Select the build you want to install, it can dl and extract it for you, and select "No Wipe Mode" in order to keep your data and apps. (don't try to put your ota file here)
Go through the steps, and in the end, hit "Root" to root again.
I know there are others methods to apply just the OTA with command lines, but I never did it cause I never took the time to learn. I should do it, maybe it's faster with command lines.
Anyway this works, even if it takes a little time, and it is kind of automatic. But I strongly recommend you try both method to find what suits you most. Or wait for someone else to reply so you'll have more points of view !
Have fun with your N5x !
I like the idea of that.
Does it reinstall the superuser app automatically?
If so, which one?
And does it redo custom recovery?
And which one for that?
Sorry for all the questions but I purchased SuperSU and I don't want it to automatically download a different one and have to go through the steps to change a superuser app.

It's not working.
I have Xposed installed.
I unmarked all modules, rebooted, and tried again but to no avail.
Other than Xposed, no mods to the kernel.

Are you using flashfire v0.28?
Xposed modifies the system so while you maybe able to get the ota it can prevent you from installing them even with flashfire.
Go to the flashfire thread and see if this is a problem with the app or because or xposed (most likely answer).
Otherwise find the ota threads and see if you can flash it through recovery (not the N version)
Yeah, it's that version of Flashfire.
I have the update zip but I'm afraid to just flash it.
I was hoping that I'd get some more help here.
Not that I don't appreciate your help.

Thats at the end of my ability to help you with this particular problem, I have only owned a Nexus for 2 months and they are completely diff to Samsung plus I run pure nexus rom, you may just have to use a computer.
And I really appreciate it.
I'll just use a computer and do it.
Don't want to risk trying to flash the zip and bricking but I'm still curious.
Just not curious enough.
Haha.
Got it.
In case anyone needs to know for themselves, I wanted to post it here.
http://nexus5.wonderhowto.com/how-t...thout-losing-root-no-computer-needed-0168428/
I used that and it worked.
I didn't flash the Xposed zip and had to later on.
Worth it just to add it to the queue to save the time.
Everything else seems to be working fine thus far.
A few settings are changed (TinyCore was turned off and hidden apps in Smart Launcher 3 were unhidden) but that's nothing big.

That is the same manipulation I explained in post 2, but with Flashfire, without using a computer. And full automated, where with nrt you have to factory reset and root later. I'll try it next time ! And yeah, the version of SuperSu is always the latest, and if it is not, it will update via play store (I bought it as well ^^)

This one didn't unroot. Just uninstalled Xposed. Kept all my data and stuff. Apps stayed signed in even. I was afraid because I heard "factory reset" in yours. Or something to that nature. The only thing I'm having problems with now is Tapatalk told me to check my adblock settings and won't load anything. I'll have to look up what's wrong with it. Other than that, it's doing all right.
You are right and wrong, it unroots but reroots in the process. Same I did when I used nrt. And as i didn't wipe data, apps stayed sign in as Well.
But i tried flashfire on my nexus 7 and I it is way more useful and faster than nrt. I am adopting it !

New Tab S 10.5 Owner! Need Help/Suggestions

I just ordered this beautiful tablet. I've never owned a tablet before. I've actually always wanted a laptop, but things are changing. I have an Amazon Kindle Fire HD from many years ago. It's actually worked pretty well for me for ebook reading, limited web browsing and email using. But, the last few months it's really started acting funny and not working right. So I've decided it's time to upgrade. Did a week's worth of research and decided this is my best option. I haven't received it yet, but I'm really excited to dig in and do a lot more than I can with my Kindle.
So that brings me here. I don't remember where, but through my research on which tablet to buy, this website was mentioned as a major resource. To be completely honest, I'm 100% lost. There are things I want to do but I don't even know where to start. I love tinkering and figuring things out, but I need a little push in the right direction.
One of the biggest things I want to be able to do is make a complete low level backup of the entire system to store on my home server should anything happen and I need to restore it.
The other big thing I want to do is remove all the excess junk that comes pre-installed that I'll never use. With such a small area of space available, having half or so used up in unnecessary stuff is just pointless.
I'm sure there are other things I can do and may want to do in the future, but for now, these are the major keys. So... any help? Did I make the right choice? What other features/functions should I be looking at or considering?
Thanks guys! Looking forward to getting a lot of great use out of my new tablet and this site.

Root with chain fire root, flash via Odin.
This will allow you to have root access allowing you to remove unwanted app amongst other things
Flash via Odin: TWRP Recovery for Chagallwifi (assuming it's a Samsung T800)
This will allow you to create a back up.
I believe the order of this can be inverted. IE. Flash recovery with Odin and then have TWRP flash the CFAutoroot zip and the SuperSU (the app that will "manage" your root)
Install Titanium Back up and freeze/uninstall unwanted apps. There are lists of removable apps on the forums. I prefer to freeze but it's up to you.
!!!Make a backup prior to this step!!!
Will update post when I am home with more suggestion's.
Thanks, that's somewhat helpful. At least it give me the names of programs. I have no idea what I'm doing though. Can you give me a link to a step-by-step guide, or at least explain what the different things are and what they do? Sorry for being such a noob with this.
Instructions
MAKE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE FILES FOR YOUR SPECIFIC DEVICE (T700, T705, T800, T805, etc.)
You will need Odin (This is the software that will allow you to install the root and other files [FLASHING])
CF-AutoRoot (Will provide Root access for your device): You will be flashing this with Odin
Optional: Install custom recovery TWRP. This is also done with Odin. This will allow you to make backups and flash .zip files, including custom roms, apps, etc.
Just google for guides on rooting Samsung Galaxy Tab S. They will show you step by step on how to do the Odin flashing, PDA, settings, autoreset or not, etc.
I recommend backing up your device at this point. Reboot into recovery (instructions will be in the rooting guides), go to backup and backup everything for now. In the future when you feel comfortable enough that you can/will select to only backup what you deem necessary.
Your device is now rooted, the first boot after installing CFAutoRoot will take awhile +/-3 - 5 minutes.
Now download Titanium Backup, and you can google or search XDA for a list of "safe" things to uninstall. Just go into TitaniumBackup and look for the app you want to Freeze (This will prevent the app from running but it will NOT delete it, thus it will still take up space) or Remove.
Busybox: Will be required by certain apps.
Optional:
Link2SD App, this allows you to install/move/link your apps to the SD Card, it essentially frees up your internal memory of the device and tricks the device into installing apps and their data files onto your second partition of your External SD Card (Google or Search XDA for guides on Link2SD). This will allow you to install a lot more apps than you normally would be able to. (Example: Vice City, San Andreas, Plants vs Zombies, etc. I mention these because of their large data size). Not all apps will work when linked, just trial and error. I can't seem to get Word, Excel, Powerpoint linked to my SD Card without at least one of the failing, same with Facebook. You will have to test each app and see what files you can link/bind and which you can't.
Adblock Plus: Self explanatory
Xposed: A bunch of customization options for your device
ES File Explorer Pro: The best file management/directory app IMO
Greenify: Battery saver
Aptoide: Secondary App Store
Hancom Apps: I feel these work better on occasion then the Microsoft Office apps (Example large excel files with multiple formulas and filters)
NovaLauncher: Custom launcher, a lot more customizations then TouchWiz will provide you. (Your home screen)
Tasker: Limitless possibilities with this app (Search google/XDA for info)
TWRP Manager: TWRP Recovery app.
VLC: Video player
4way_multiwindow: This will allow you to have 4 apps open at a time and 3 apps "minimized", this also allows floating windows (Moveable apps running in "windowed mode" essentially.) There is an aesthetic bug when minimized, I have not found a fixed version of this yet, maybe others can provide link. Just load up TWRP manager and choose install, and select the .zip file and it will reboot into recovery and install the file for you. Or you can boot your device into recovery and install it the same way. I am attaching the .zip file.
If you are happy with your device up to this point, I would create another backup after you are done with the initial set up and have installed the apps of your choosing. Save a copy on the device, PC, NAS, etc. just in case you lose one of your copies. Some TWRP versions do not allow you to backup directly to the external SD Card, you may have to backup into the Internal and then transfer the information over to the external SD Card.
Good Luck.

This is just an app I get from the Google Play store right? Or is there a special version I need to get, or install manually? I think I saw in a YouTube video that I need to install something called GApps if I want install something from there after rooting, is this correct? Also, if Titanium Backup IS an app, how can I get a backup of the entire system when I'm booted into the OS? I think I read somewhere, or saw screenshots that show this basically creates backups of your installed programs, so you can easily restore them without having to re-download them. Maybe I'm wrong, as I said I'm completely new this and probably don't know what I'm talking about.
My biggest concern is that I'll screw something up and find myself with a tablet I can't use, without having had it no more than a couple days, and having spent nearly $600 for it and the accessories. I know that rooting/etc voids the warranty, but I also have seen where people are able to put the whole system back to factory default for repairs, etc. That sounds like something I really need to learn how to do and be confident I can do should something happen.
Thanks again for any help!

The previous link contains TWRP, read above. The normal CF Autoroot comes with CWM Recovery I believe (A custom recovery similar to TWRP). You can use the link you posted. Chagallwifi is the "nickname" of the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 WiFi, it is one way to search for a device, the other being the model number T800, for instance or the long commercial name.

You get the app from the playstore, correct. I am not sure about GApps, I want to say it isn't necessary unless you will be installing a custom rom (you can double check this on the rooting guides, if it asks for GApps, then flash the GApps)
The system back up is done via TWRP or CWM, boot into recovery and choose backup.
Titanium Backup allows you to back up the app and its data file. So you don't lose the progress of your games. Also backs up email, WiFi passwords, etc.
My biggest concern is that I'll screw something up and find myself with a tablet I can't use, without having had it no more than a couple days, and having spent nearly $600 for it and the accessories. Most of the errors cause soft bricks, you can recover from these. I would recommend you backup after rooting, in case you mess something up toying with Titanium, Link2SD, SuperSU, etc. You can always use SamMobile and find a Stock Rom to flash back onto the device, again via Odin. Not sure if the KnoxTrip flag will still show up, you can trying Googling how to root without tripping Knox, I know there are methods, however I have never used them. I have soft bricked my device before, I deleted everything with TWRP, I wanted to factory reset, and I selected erase System..... scary times.
Stock Rom: SamFirm (Outdated) or Updato
Thanks for all your help and advice. I just got my tablet today. Still kinda playing around with it. I probably won't do anything for a couple of days. At least till my next day off from work (Thursday) so I can concentrate on what I'm doing. I was really scared when I first turned it on, everything was in Korean. I had to find a YouTube video showing how to go through the initial setup to change the language. All good now. Once I got it fully running, it downloaded a 350mb update and rebooted. I'm now running Lolipop 5.0.2. Is that going to cause any issues? Also, I can now confirm that it is model SM-T800.
Thanks again!
ChewVodka, once your past the learning curve rooting etc. can be done in your sleep. After some research, I rooted a 10.1 tab 4 a while back with no problem. Definitely better o have more control over the device, I think. Just got a new 10.5 also, and am looking around for the best way to administer the Android system - the Galaxy Tab S for Dummies book seems to me to be actually a good place to start. I'll check back here with any choice info I find on the 10.5.
Also, I have this case for my 10.1, and this is the best under $20 case you can get for the 10.5 - so cheap I bought two of them! Type in search: Xtra-Funky Exclusive Samsung Galaxy Tab S, 10.5 -- the black and navy blue are cool -- the others kinda garish.
Easy Way, allow installation of 3rd party apps in settings download this for android https://kingroot.net/ run it select install anyway when you get the pop up, and root device , open Playstore download flashify for root users, run it allow it access , click recovery image then download twrp choose the 3.0.2-0 release and install to your tab and reboot into recovery, at this point you can use it to make a backup of your current rom or install a custom rom (following the directions on the page for the rom that you choose), this is easier method if you aren't familiar with odin and don't have the drivers and all set up on pc. You can also change kingroot over to super user in a few different ways can download and use supersume from play store and run it or, just flash the newest superuser in twrp and remove whats leftover from kingroot manually after reboot. If you intend on doing a custom rom i suggest choosing first and having all files available before you start. However if you intend on using odin You might want to install this first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790 so you have full communication with the device in case anything does go wrong there will be other options. This is of course if you are not already setup with this already. Also I would like to note there are a few roms here based on the stock firmware if you like it just look through the forum see what you like, and read everything.
What are the benefits to a custom ROM? I assume you're talking about things like Cyanogenmod. There are some people in another forum I visit that like it, but I don't know what it is or why I would want it. Does it allow installing pirated software or something? It's probably not allowed to be discussed here, and I'm not saying I would purposely do something like that (not that I wouldn't if possible lol). It all comes down to the fact that I'm completely new to the tablet world, other than the fact that it's a bigger and better Kindle Fire that I can get more usage out of by not being limited to Amazon's ROM and store for apps. The biggest things I'm looking to do is get rid of bloatware that came preinstalled (of which a lot was added with the update) and the ability to make backups of the entire system should something screw up.
It sounds like "rooting" is essentially giving you the administrative control access to the system (like in Windows) instead of being limited to a generic "user". That allows you to install more system accessible programs, where a generic user would get a UAC prompt and then be told and Administrator needs to preform that action. As for "recovery", it sounds like that is sort of like the CMOS/BIOS of a PC. It's the first "program" that runs when you boot up (even requiring a specific keypress to enter). This allows you to access the system before the system boots, to get you backup/restore functions, and the ability to install new OS's. It also sounds like the built in version from Samsung is what is getting changed (like updating the BIOS of the PC) to allow more functionality (like backups, etc). The only thing you don't have access to is stuff like disk drives, but things like RAM and CPU can be adjusted once you have ROOT.
The more I learn about it, the more I'm eager to do it. I really don't like feeling confined to a predetermined set of available things to do, and I really don't like having somebody decide to install software I'll never use on my system that just takes up space. I especially hate that said programs can't even be uninstalled. Looks like this is what I'm gonna have to do!
Decided not to wait and rooted it tonight. I have the freedom now to play, though I'm not sure where to start. Currently I have the CF-Autoroot thing done, and it installed SuperSU. Then I did the TWRP recovery, and made a backup of all the partitions. I was kinda hoping I could backup remotely (like on the computer) rather than stored on the same device. I have a microSD card ordered and on the way, so my next task will be to back up to that. There is a tool I use on my Kindle Fire called ES File Explorer. I'll see if I can get that on this. Then I can find the backup and transfer it over the wifi.
I'll check out your other recommended apps as I have time. Thanks again!
Now I'm having a bunch of trouble. I was able to get the Chainfire root to go through, and verified it with a Root Checker. I then installed the TWRP recovery so I could make a backup. I even have a few backups. Then I went and installed an app called TWRP Manager, that was supposed to enable me the option of making backups LIVE (without having to boot into TWRP). It wasn't working, so I went to do a "Classic Backup" which reboots into TWRP and starts the backup then reboots normally. Well, TWRP never booted. I just had a black screen. Nothing seemed to work. I couldn't power on with the power button, and I couldn't manually boot into TWRP. The only option that did anything was ODIN (Download) Mode. I'm really freaking out at this point. I found a way to connect to XDA's IRC Channel and talked with some really nice guys and was told to try re-flashing the stock. I did that, and it worked. But now I'm stuck again. Basically starting from scratch with a stock system, I went through to install the Chainfire root again. It seemed to work ok, and SuperSU showed up. Ran the Root Verifier and it confirmed it was successful. I then went to flash TWRP. ODIN says it passed, but I still can't boot into it. Here's the kicker.. even if it appears that it's not working, if I do the keypresses on my tablet correctly and wait like 2-3 minutes then try again, TWRP will actually be up but the screen locked. WTF??
So did I something wrong? I'm really lost. Like I told the guys in the chatroom, I'm going on blind faith here, not really knowing what I'm doing. I figured once I have stock installed, I'm basically back to square one and can go through the whole process again. Doesn't seem to be working. I have to go to work now but hopefully somebody has something of a suggestion I can try by the time I get home.

Or you can boot your device into recovery and install it the same way. I am attaching the .zip file.

Before I try this myself and bootloop, would I be safe flashing the 4way multiwindow on the new stock 6.0.1 ROM? (SM-T805)

FireStarter/AppStarter Boot & Key Mapping thru XPosed Edge Pro

Already had an idea to possible getting some of the FireStarter options back thru XPosed Modules mentioned in a thread. But once @SimLynks - [TOTAL MOD] Playing With Fire excellent tutorial was release. I was able to guess that XPosed Edge Pro would be the best option to try. Thanks @SimLynks for the great MOD.
This is a walk-thru on how to get the old FireStarter Boot & Home button options working again using the fullest XPosed Module I've seen. This is only fully compatible with ROOTED FireTV (Sticks). This should work for just about any app including FireStarter, AppStarter, Kodi, SPMC, MrMC, etc. This will let you upgrade past FireOS 5.0.5 to the latest FireOS 5 Pre-Rooted roms & enjoy the new UI & bug fixes. A mouse is not require for installing or changing XPosed Edge settings. Since long pressing brings out sub-menus.
Requirements:
1. Rooted FireTV device.
2. XPosed Edge Pro. (More Triggers for boot startup is only available in the Pro version)
Should work on either FireOS 5 or even FireOS 3.
3. Must have installed XPosed Module & Manager App.
4. You have a functioning FireStarter or AppStarter or Kodi or SPMC, MrMC, etc.
5. Read the whole post before getting started.
You do not need the Pro version but @ $1.99 it is a great way to support the developer of this module. And the Pro version will let you do more with this module.
Download & install XPosed Edge Pro v3.9. This can be done thru sideloading. Since the Pro version is needed. Once you have it installed & checked. You will need to reboot your device for it to become active. Change the following settings after you reboot your device. The last setting will not work unless you have the XPosed Edge module activated. And for that you must do a reboot on your device.
1. Start XPosed Edge. Go down to "More triggers". (Only available in the Pro version)
2. Choose "Boot completed".
3. Choose "App".
4. Choose "FireStarter/AppStarter" or "Kodi" or "SPMC" or "MrMC". Depending on your taste.
5. Now your "Boot completed " should show the icon of the App you choose.
6. Now hit back once. And go up to "Keys".
7. Now choose "Home".
8. You should have the option to change "Click", "Double click" & "Long press".
9. Go to & choose "Click".
10. Go to "App".
11. Choose "FireStarter/AppStarter" or "Kodi" or "SPMC" or "MrMC". Depending on your taste.
12. Now your "Click " should show the icon of the App you choose.
13. Now go down to "Double click".
14. In my case I choose to go "Home" when ever I "Double click". You can choose something else.
( I was not able to choose/find "Settings" like we could before. Might be a FW bug. Wonder if that got fix on the latest update.)
15. You should see the icon of what ever you choose for your "Double click". I decided to leave the long press as default.
16. Now go up to "Home".
17. Now long press "OK/Enter" on "Home" until you get to the check box menu.
18. In the check box menu choose "Enable".
19. You will now see the a check in the checkbox for "Home".
20. Hit back one time to go back to the main menu.
21. On the main menu. Go to "Keys" & long press until the checkbox menu shows up.
22. Then choose "Enable".
23. You should now see a check in the "Keys" checkbox & you should see a small popup letting you know that "Key control on" is activated.
Congrats. You now have a FireStarter/AppStarter auto-starting at bootup. And you have full control over your Home button.
I only tried this with AppStarter so there might be some minor tweaks that need to be done with FireStarter or Kodi or SPMC or MrMC but they should be minor. Let us know how it goes for you'll.
Thanks to @SimLynks post here for clarifying that the Pro version is needed to follow this walk-thru. He did mention an option to use his [TOTAL MOD] Playing With Fire directions on how to disable the default FireTV launcher. I myself prefer to just pay the $1.99 for the Pro version. But you do have a choice.
- Will add "running apps list" pics & option in the next few days.
- Updated the walk-thru to reflect that the XPosed Edge Pro version is required to follow it.
Nice how-to. THX a lot.
I will test it in a few days, when I had some time for it.
Good to see that the long waitiung time for a soltuion like rbox-mods did it, has an end!!!

Thanks for the great guide! Do you have a first gen stick? I was wondering about the performance on it with this set up. I'm currently still on 5.05 with my first gen stick. I had tried never ROM previously but it had noticable lags. Went back to 5.05.

All my devices are Rooted FireTV 1's.
@Y314K Great work on this guide how to configure some of the more detailed features of this awesome Xposed Mod.
However this guide specifically uses "More Triggers" which IS a Pro-Only feature. Users can accomplish a similar task by following parts of my info on this module over in the Playing with Fire MOD thread, but would need to disable the default FireTV launcher instead of using the Pro-Only Triggers feature.
I do agree that Jozein deserves some money for this awesome Module, but there are definitely a large majority of users who will refuse to pay for basically anything (at least until they try the free version and then realize they want "more" so pay for pro). You might want to consider doing a separate section on how to do this using the free only features, just a thought.
Also I'd recommend suggesting users add in the "running apps list" to Home Double Click or Home Long Press, so that they get access to the Task Switcher built into this Module. Definitely one of my favorite features from XEdge that was missing from FireOS.

Curious if the non-voice remote is being used? Seems to cause slower/choppy navigation with registering input compared to a bluetooth game controller or k400r keyboard on a first gen stick. This was just general observation between 5.0.5 and 5.2.4.1, before the Xposed Edge/Pro module. The xposed module route offers a much cleaner, more responsive approach to the FireStarter home button and start-on-boot features.

Cool. Thanks. Yes I have a non voice remote. It seems that there first gen stick is so sluggish at times. Haven't used it for a while. Was hoping to debloat and make it more snappier.

If debloat is what your looking for, I suggest you checkout the firestick-loader project over at Github. https://github.com/esc0rtd3w/firestick-loader
Seems this does everything it can to remove non-essential packages from the FireStick, is also one of the source I used to know what was safe or not-safe to remove.

Is there any way you can point me in the direction of the Fire TV version of the Amazon App Store? Can you upload the apk and post a link maybe?
I'm sorry for asking newbie question regards Must have installed XPosed Module & Manager App.
Where can I find xposed module and manager app?
One more, is anyway I could get rid of kingroot?
I have twrp installed, is any way I could just load any fresh prerooted ROM? My Amazon version is 5.2.1.0 and I wish I could have working firestarter. If I ask too much please disregard my post.5.2.1.0
Thank you

The XPosed version depends which FTV device you have. Can you be more specific ? FT1, FTV2 or FTVS1 ?
Best XPosed tutorial is in Section 4:
http://marksmods.com/Hack-the-Fire-TV/How-to-Install-Android-TV-on-the-Fire-TV-page2.html#xposed
I usually install the zip XPosed Framework right after installing a PreRooted ROM.
To get rid of KinRoot just follow this guide & reflash your PreRooted ROM:

Thank you so much for your help. I use FTV2.
So, just do factory reset, I bet if I do it I will loose my kingroot and my ROM won't be rooted is it right?
Is is possible to wipe the system somehow in TWRP and just flash prerooted ROM?
Thank you again...

1. When rooted & with TWRP installed. Only do Factory Reset from TWRP.
2. You never need to include /System in any wipe. Even Factory Reset. Since flashing a PreRooted ROM will take care of /System.
3. If you ever do wipe /System make sure you flash a PreRooted ROM before any reboot or power down or you will brick.
4. For FTV1's & FTV2's I strongly recommend you use a Fat32 USB stick to flash anything on TWRP.

Seems you where using the old FireOS 3 external storage script. Not sure there was an .zip uninstall for it. Did u always had a USB Drive/Stick connected to your device ? Are you still connecting to it ?
Actually that was never used on FTV2's.
Try to do a Factory Reset in TWRP but don't reboot (hit the HOME button on the middle-bottom). Then flash the PreRooted ROM. Then reboot. But take the USB stick out after it starts to reboot.

Never seen that error. You'll need a USB hub to try using a USB keyboard & USB stick. Also make sure you include a MD5 file so TWRP can verify the PreRooted ROM is not corrupted.
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-use-twrps-built-in-md5-file-integrity-checker-to-avoid-bricking/
You can try using the SDCard again. Just add a MD5 file for the TWRP verification.

This is something to do with "cache"
Please look at this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/fire-tv-2-boot-loop-twrp-t3648309
Looks like it is the same problem.
how to run this command in adb shell? I have no clue
Stuck in a loop?
If you cannot boot normally and keep going back to the bootmenu, wipe Cache from Wipe -> Advanced Wipe.
If that doesn't work, ensure Cache is not mounted from in the 'Mount' menu and run this from an adb shell:
Code:
mke2fs /dev/block/platform/mtk-msdc.0/by-name/cache

For TWRP terminal you just go to Advanced in the main TWRP menu. You can find it there. Then follow RBox link info for cache loop.
So make sure you have Cache UNMounted in the TWRP mount menu first. Before you run the command.
