Possible to make "shell" to turn it into a netbook?

(Apologies if this has been asked before or if it's mind-bogglingly retarded.)
What we have with the SGS2 is remarkable - it's as powerful as a netbook, with video-out and USB host functionality.
It seems to me that carrying such a super-phone alongside a netbook would be a waste of money and effort, when the processor in the SGS2 is more than up to scratch.
So what would be the obstacles in making a "shell" that provided a laptop-like keyboard, mouse and screen, with an SGS2 where the processor, RAM and so on would normally be housed? (The SGS2 would be removable, of course.)
These are the ones I can think of:
USB/Bluetooth keyboard support - may have to be Bluetooth keyboard.
Touch input? (May have to be Bluetooth mouse, but mouse input is possible in Android)
Connecting a monitor and USB device through the same USB port (not necessary if keyboard/mouse are Bluetooth)
Battery life - just make the shell house a fat battery!
So let's say we could piece all that together - a keyboard, mouse, battery and screen in one shell. It could come out considerably cheaper and lighter than a netbook, with all the SGS2's media playback abilities, internet without having to tether, and no need to change apps when going from netbook to phone.
There's probably something I haven't thought of, but I couldn't resist posting.
Thoughts?

I would love to see something like this happen. The SGS2 will be my first Android phone, coming from WinMo, so I've no idea what is available or is possible with the OS. One reason I bought this phone was because I wanted to connect a Bluetooth keyboard (and mouse?) to it and keep it mounted on a dock or stand right below my two monitors at work, serving as an internet/chat/email computer, instead of taking my phone AND laptop to work every day.
Now I may be mistaken, but MHL doesn't support simultaneous USB and HDMI out, so if you wanted to connect input devices AND have monitor out, I'd guess the keyboard and mouse would have to be Bluetooth, as you've mentioned. One thing that interests me is something the Wiki entry mentions:
"The HDTV remote will control the connected device with guaranteed mixed manufacturer interoperability."
So perhaps one day we might see some SGS2 "lapdock" like the Atrix?

You won't be able to do a full netbook, because the microUSB connector on the SGS2 can be used either as microUSB or MHL (HDMI video out + charger input); the two functions of the connector are mutually exclusive. So, if you're piping the SGS2's video out to the shell's display, you have no USB, and if you're using the USB, there's no external video.
You might be able to use some kind of remoting software to work around this & use the USB functionality of the SGS2; the shell would have something like a VNC client installed, then connect to server software on the SGS2 (over WiFi or BT networking).

Hm, are you 100% sure about them being mutually exclusive?

Interesting, but I would still prefer a full size keyboard.

No idea how this can be realized. Afaik, there is a VNC client installed, but no server.
Guess it is easier to try what is mentioned above :
Use NHL to get the monitor working and BT for the keyboard. Would be good to have some profile, which enables the BT keyboard when NHL is plugged, maybe through locale or so.

I know this thread is kinda old now, but some recent tech news brought this idea back to memory for me. ICE Computer showed a docking tablet they call Trinity at Computex 2011, which apparently can be made to dock with nearly any phone or even a PC module. I didn't find too much info that wasn't regurgitated between sites, but it sounds like they won't be selling it themselves, rather they'll sell it to other companies who want one for their device.
My hope is they'll sell some kind of universal version that takes different phones and maybe just requires a different-shaped module for different phones. Here's a link to the Engadget post, but there are other pages that describe what it does and when it should be available.

Add a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, perhaps a stand, and voila!

Need a solution like this
1) MHL output to a tv/ monitor
2) Bluetooth keyboard and mouse work over HID profile
3) Remote Desktop software that allows use of external keyboard and mouse and which can output native resolution rather than just mirroring the screen.

Galaxy S3 composite out?

I've been searching and I'm not finding any real answers which leads me to believe that it won't be possible without a digital converter box. I'm looking for some type of analog out adapter for my S3. I would like to hook it up to my car's in-dash head unit which does not support HDMI. Now a days a regular micro usb port on these phones seem to be used for every purpose. I do want video. Has anyone had any luck?
EDIT: This post started with 6 adapters and has dwindled down to just 3. I'm surprised to find the S3 VGA adapter but this is the digital to analog converter I need. The total cost is about $30. I pulled the trigger and will update you guys in a few weeks once it arrives.

I was focusing on the conversion from digital to analog and didn't consider the encoding is different... The VGA out does however work with my HDTV. It's not great though. The output is fixed at the 720p resolution which means it uses about 1/3th of my 1080p screen. The screen flickers occasionally too. Sometimes it won't even work without a minute of messing with the cables. The screen is just staticy until I get it right. It has however gotten better so maybe it needed to break in or something. Either way, I guess I'm going to buy an HDMI to Composite converter box instead.

That's the guy I was looking at first but you have to buy a 5 to 11 pin adapter, an MHL HDMI cable, and then the converter. That's around $50. The VGA adapter will only run you $30.

Raspberry Pi
Hopefully people are still reading this... Someone had mentioned a Raspberry Pi... How would I go about using that to connect my phone to my car system to get video? any ideas anyone?

What car system do you have? What kind of input methods are available? What are you trying to achieve?

I have an Avic Z1 in my car. The video inputs are just RCA/Component cables... no high-def. I essentially just want to be able to play movies off my phone onto my screen/sound system in my car. I have a Raspberry Pi sitting around; I've never used it though, so no idea what to do with it. I'm hoping I can use that so I don't have to buy anything else. Any ideas?

Well, the Pi does have RCA output. So you could connect it to your Z1. The Pi is a little computer on its own. You could just use it instead of your phone and put your movies on a sd card or a thump drive. It is possible to use the Pi as a dlna device and your phone as a dlna server that transmits movies to the Pi which in turn outputs the video to your Z1. That however isn't the easiest of feats. It takes a lot more effort than a plug and play solution like a hdmi to RCA converter box would.
The Pi is linux based and I don't use Linux. So I don't know if Linux can work with the MPA or whatever that standard is named, that the S3 uses instead of the standard older phones are using which makes them appear on a computer like a harddrive when connected via USB. If Linux can work with the S3 you could just connect it and use it as a Harddrive, using the computer system of the Pi to navigate content on your phone. Would be a lot easier than streaming.
Anyway, there are a couple of ways you could use the Pi but none of them are easy out of the box solutions. The Pi is more of a developer device at least when you want to do more than what the Linux distributions that are available can offer. There are some that offer that DLNA feature I was talking about. Look for XBMC, there are Videos on Youtube. All those solutions aren't plug and play. If you like playing with computers and figuring out stuff, make it work, this should be fun for you. If not, you better think of something else to do with your time.

Looked it up. It's called MHL, not MPA.

You'd also need a MHL Cable that turns your Micro USB out to a HDMI out, Plug it into the converter and said converter into your Z1. Once you've set that up with all the cables needed (quite a lot of cables going on there), it will be plug and play in the future.
Not cheap, so it depends on how often you are going to use it, if it's a worthwhile endeavor.

Interesting... I'll have to look into all that.. My only concern is then I'd have to keep a mouse and keyboard in my car at all times, correct? I was hoping I could just play something on my phone and it would appear on my car screen. I'll youtube the stuff you mentioned and see what works. Thanks a lot!

Well, the converter box would do that.
With the Pi being a real computer however, some kind of input device will be necessary. Using the Pi is kind of a long shot anyway. It's possible but it's not what the Pi is intended for. It usually is easier and more user-friendly using a dedicated system instead of something cobbled together.

No. The S3 has it's own cable and it's different than the ones from the S1 or S2. There is an adapter available but that one usually costs nearly as much as a new cable from ebay.
Also, depending on your ROM, TV-out may not work at all. There is no TV-out on Cyanogenmod ROMs for example.

I bought the n8010 yesterday as my current android tablet is starting to feel sloow, a ViewSonic 9.7" single core that's about 2 years old.
I'm quite disappointed.
No hdmi out? My old cheap tablet has this!
No dedicated dock that gives USB and hdmi? My Note 2 has this.
No decent netbook keyboard/case?

The Note 10.1 does have HDMI-out (but the cable is still like $40 even from china)
I do agree on this point, I want a Smart Dock for my Note 10.1
There are quire a few nice keyboard-cases, especially if you dont mind wireless (if someone would make a dock connector that pointed to the side instead of down we'd really be in business...)

Except the hdmi is built in to ye olde ViewSonic, not an expensive extra :-/
I have a wireless case for the ViewSonic and don't like using it, I'd prefer something more Asus Transformer like that turned the Note in to a laptop. If something like this was available for my Note2 I'd have it instantly!

I guess u knew about all this before you got this tablet.
Also getting note 10.1 has so many other features including the ability to use s pen, which no other tablet has that you forgot...
Every user has their own requirements in a device. Select the one you need and not buy one that does not fit your needs and then cry about it.

Sadly the HDMI comes and goes, there seems to be a wave of tablets and phones that have a dedicated port, then a wave that dont and we're currently int he "dont" wave...
That was something I did love about the TF101 - the keyboard dock with USB, SD, Battery, AND charger... I havn't seen another tablet (baring super-high-end "convertables" running x86 or x64 chips) that has a keyboard dock like that...
Also just to point out, afaik, you *can* get a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 keyboard and use it with the note. Dont know if you've looked at those but I'm told the docking connector pinout is the same for both tablets so their accessories are interchangeable.

Well....... it does work, I just tried it. You have to find something that is in stock. The HDMI adapter is out of stock and it does not show the discount for things back ordered.
One other thing the item has to be under $50.00 bucks and the code is case sensitive so copy and past the code.

If it matters to anyone i brought from amazon prime the samsung all cast wifi media hdmi out hub ...did not update and using dice player ..works really good for watching movies.. but i cannot firgue how to watch with close caption with dice to display on my 46 inch lcd..also i brought the black keyboard case from amazon ..i think it cost me about $35 ..it work pretty good till i wet the keyboard..so then from ebay i got the ipad 2 illuuminate keyboard $ 45 just for the lighted keyboard using it works okay ..but loving the light part...and it fit it the case..just my 2 cents

I've heard random reports of occasional stuttering on 1080p content with Wireless streaming, how's it working? (Trying to figure out the best way to get media from my server to my TV - Allshare, Android-system-on-a-stick (running Plex client) or STB like Roku)

Yeah, the whole lack of HDMI out is a bummer, but quickly forgotten when you can use a media dock for the original tab 7 w/o the guide.
They run about 8 Bucks on ebay .
That and Bluetooth peripherals= business, in.

You won't be able to, unfortunately. The way the video works on our tablets (and many other Android devices) is there's a "Video" output, and an "Overlay" output for secondary video (like Closed Captions, some subtitles and things like buttons and menus), and the "Overlay" output is just as it says, overlaid onto the main Video output before being displayed by the LCD panel. Unfortunately, the video the AllShare Cast (and IIRC, the HDMI output) is only the main "Video" output. That's probably done for DRM purposes, as if you could read the main Video output, it might be theoretically possible to copy movies (it'd be a slow, and dumb-fsck way to do it, but so is Hollywood's paranoia).

I have the tab media dock mentioned here and the allshare cast dongle that I use on my note. When I connet to comcast xfinity player the wireless dongle displays movies as normal but when I connect to the wired media dock I get this message "Please disconnect the secondary output before playing video". This must be a block from a paid service account as video files played from my tablets sdcard play normally when using both dongle and dock.
Just thought you would want to know before purchasing one.
Does any one know if this condition is the same for other online video broadcast sevices like Hulu and Netflix?

I have not tested streaming a movie but all my movie rips some which are at 1080 look great but using dice player seem to make the difference and if anyone knows how to get cc working please let me know..i try using bs player in software mode and i can see the close caption but the video quality suffer and there is a lag..but to be honest i am very happy with samsung wifi hub ..its really cool to be able to watch without a hdmi cable..and i use amazon prime and amazon has a great customer return policy..i freakin luv amazon prime..

I actually want to say it's an artifact from an older time, much like how sound used to be encoded into the edges of movie film...
The difference is "Hard Subs" vs "Soft subs" hard subs are encoded directly into the video - same as if you had taken a pen and written it on every frame of a movie. Soft subs are software controlled and in many instances will not play through a combination of video format, player, hardware, etc (trust me this is the bane of my media experiance because I love to watch Anime with Japanese audio and english subtitles) the only way to be 100% sure is to set up the hard-subs (which will have to be processed on a PC - I think you can do it using Handbreak, but I'm not sure)

I use this dock with my Netflix, Hulu, and VUDU account with no issue. Haven't tried with Crackle yet, but I suspect it'll be fine.
Don't use that service too often anyway.
I suspect if you're using something involving Comcast, you're gonna run into walls like that.

Unfortunately our proprietary connection allows one or the other at any given time. So if you want HDMI to pass through, forget about USB interface & vice versa.Super bummer, but such is Samsung gnote 10.1.
I know the note 2 has that ability with it's dock, which blows my mind. I mean, why offer it to the note 2 and not the full size 10.1 tablet. Madness.

Wireless display / MHL

Hi,
I have tested Z1C with both Miracast dongle and MHL cable.
MHL cable is so called 5 PIN cable. The same one that works with Galaxy S2 and HTC One X.
MHL Cable works just fine.
I have also tested Miracast dongle (iPazzport). It connects slowly in Miracast mode. Screen and sound gets transferred to TV very slowly. It is basically unusable. The same dongle works just fine with Asus HD7 tablet.
DLNA mode is not usable either for video. At least not for HD content. It can be used for sound transfer. But it has minor problems also with sound only connections. I have tested with the same iPazzport HDMI dongle and WD HDTV Live box.
Please share your experience.

how is the lag for mhl? i heard some phones get quite a bit of lag.

There is definitely some lag with MHL. I can only express my gut feeling. 50-100 ms, I guess. Is there any good way to measure it?

I plan to order the PS3 controller too for gaming on screen, but not sure how it will be with the lag. also not sure if these cheap ps3 controllers will work or i need the original ps3 controller. for wireless of course, not planing to use wired controllers. maybe xbox wireless can work too. testing to come.
For measuring it, the best method is to start the stopwatch and record the TV and the phone's screen with some point and shoot camera, just stop the video later after 10 seconds for example and see the difference between the times.

MHL lag.
First, tested using timer app in phone. Took pictures containing both mobile and plasma screen.
Out of 13 shots:
0.1 s delay - 9 times
0.2 s delay - 2 times
All the rest, 1 shot had 0.1-0.3 s delay (between TV frames), another had 0 - 0.2 s delay (between TV frames again).
Second test.Used http://vimeo.com/12505989 test video.
My laptop (connected through display port->HDMI) was 100% in sync. Z1C was 2-3 frames late (on 24 fps video).
I would say, it is about 120 ms delay. And it is huge for a cable connection IMHO.
Shame, Sony, shame!!!
My other phone Galaxy S Advance did much better job with DLNA sharing.
Which means that there must be a problem with WiFi (either HW or SW).
I am really disappointed. Way too many problems with a device that was meant to be almost a flagship. I wonder if all those problems also exist with Z1 older brother as well. Or did Sony cut some corners again...

Anyone who could explain why it's necessary to switch wifi off then on again when you activate media sharing (DLNA)?
Say you sit at home, your wifi is on ofc and you like to send a pic or a track to your AVR or TV, then why does it say "please turn on wifi" when you activate media sharing...

Official ps3 controller works great for wireless gaming through mhl, i also dont seem to suffer from any lagging? (gaming,streaming etc)

My Pixel 6 Pro does not connect to an external monitor via UBC-C to HDMI cable (hope it's not an issue of my specific device). The video signal just doesn't transfer, and I get a black screen on the second monitor. I tried having a look at the dev settings but there seem not to be an option to enable/disable the feature, only to resize windows etc. Any tips?
(The cable worked fine with my previous Oneplus phone and with my friend's Samsung device)

You would need a DisplayLink dongle and the DisplayLink app, this is the only method to do video out on a Pixel

That's a great idea. Is miracast hardware built into the phone or just a software WiFi stack? I would like to Miracast from the pixel 6 pro.

It's software that relies on WiFi Direct. However Google practically pulled all Miracast support from Android in favour of Chromecast, so it will be quite the job to reimplement it even with a custom ROM.

I just want to vent regarding the lack of HDMI capabilities of the pixel 6 pro. I wanted to buy one of these to replace my landline. I wanted to display it via an HDMI dongle on my 4k tv, one with an ethernet port so I could use it as a hotspot/router and root it for call recording. It turns out that to do that, you have to purchase a special display link adapter (expensive) and you are limited to 1080p. So instead I purchased an inexpensive Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G. I ran it through an inexpensive hub that has HDMI and ethernet out. It has 3 usb 3.0 ports and I use one with a mouse. The freaking setup works like a computer, it is just slick. IT PUTS OUT 4K 30HZ RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. The pixel 6 pro has a few advantages like its on hold software and rootability. But the Samsung absoulutely smashes it when it comes to HDMI affordability. And don't even mention chromecast, it won't ethernet properly and wont do 4k. Chromecast is a joke, just buy a Samsung for HDMI. I don't intend to buy another pixel unless they change their HDMI situation.

If you read the product page, you would've realised that the Pixel series has NEVER supported USB DisplayPort Alt Mode (which is what you'd need for direct HDMI connection), and DisplayLink is the only option.
You also don't have to buy the expensive adapters, there are DisplayLink HDMI adapters that cost only $30-ish.
You're also not limited to 1080p only, as there are 4K DisplayLink adapters (albeit more expensive).
You're also complaining about a $800+ phone you want to use as a LANDLINE, needing a $30-80 adapter to work with a TV.

@GivIn2It It's just a theory of mine for a long time, but I'll repeat it. I suspect (no evidence other than what's publicly known about Pixels versus Samsungs) that Google has a contract with Samsung where Samsung sells Google parts and/or manufacturing prowess for the Pixels, or sells them at a only mildly expensive price, in exchange for Google agreeing to not make the Pixels "too" competitive with Samsungs.
Of course, this idea of mine held more weight before Samsung started to make MicroSD slots rare or even just non-existent on their flagship devices (they keep them on the cheaper devices since cheaper devices commonly hardly include any significant internal storage space), but I think it's still a possibility. Who knows, though, I'm just guessing.
Google does depend on Samsung, so Samsung has all the weight to throw around.
I also cannot stand Samsung's Android implementation (up through and including the Note 10+). Hardware absolutely great. Software gets a 2 out of 10 from me.

I maintain that DisplayLink is overpriced BS. I would not consider anything not capable of 4k, all my monitors are 4k. Any phone I purchase will likely cost at least $800+, but why should I throw money away on accessories that are equally functional and way cheaper on alternate hardware? Google needs to listen, more people are using their phones on Hdmi. Wifi is finicky and unreliable, a cable is solid and trustworthy. And I don't have time to read everyone's stinking fine print on their product page. That info is well buried. I like stuff that just works, and works well, like my Samsung setup. I can't find anything on this pixel that will reliably put its screen on my tv, anydesk, teamviewer, chromecast, all fail regularly, and are low res too boot.
