Distorted Sound - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I've brand new T989 with me, I moved to India after purchasing it so didn't got chance to check it properly while I was in USA. I just turned it on today and sound is distorted from rear speaker and in Earphones. Its just unplayable at even minimum volume and its not just with music its with every sound phone makes.. I can upload sample after recording but wanted to ask first if it can be fixed some how? I know its not speaker problem as sound is messed in earphones too. I don't know I feel its Hardware fault but its very rare :\ It is same sort of distorted sound when one preamps the music to make it louder.
Things I've tried 1 factory reset 2.installed clean factory image using ODIN and custom rom. Problem still exists.. Downloading 4.0.4 image to try it out too.
Please suggest if there is any fix available as I can't ask for warranty outside USA and sending phone back and getting it back from USA will cost almost half the price of phone so its not worth.
EDIT: its like something is boosting audio, for a min it started working fine but after reboot its screwed again. Any help would be highly appreciated thanks
Thanks in Advance

there is an official release of Jellybean 4.1.2 for our phones... try that out...

An update to jb from ics won't change it. Sounds like a hardware issue

[Q] Desire HD - no sound on earphones after rooting - help :D

Bought a Desire HD I rooted the phone with ace hack kit, whole procedure, downgrade root and all, everything went perfect. Didnt wanna flash a newer radio, cuz everything worked fine with any rom i flashed. I flashed it so far like 50 times, going back and forth with Erebus,Energy,SmartDroid, Android Revolution, Coredroid,etc.. after some weeks first time i plugged in my earphones, and trust me i have 3 pairs, all HTC all working. I get no sound at all on them, except some crackling and loud clicks. It is the same with every rom. When i plug them in,phone detects the earphones and puts out the icon of the phones, but no sound. When i try play music,or especially when i move the volume sliders in settings, the sliders quick freeze bit and give me these loud crackle sounds in the phones. Tried newest radio,no changes. Everything else works perfectly with the phone. if anyone can help with some idea,or at least help me convince that its hardware related and that i cant do a damn thing about it Worst is,i didnt try the phones BEFORE rooting :S cuz i rooted and flashed the phone like one hour after buying it
Thanks in advance for any help or idea,i searched and searched and couldnt find any answer yet
Sounds work ok without headphones?
How does the YouTube app sound?
If it's the same on every rom its probably hardware or a bad flash of something.
It's stupid but try this
Turn up the volume when the headphones are plugged in, work?
Turn off the phone and remove the batt for a few mins. It's important to remove the batt.
Work? Only solutions i can offer
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
Thanks for the suggestions.
Nothing of the above steps changed anything.
Youtube player works fine, tried it the first time now.
Without headphones everything works perfect.
When i turn up the volume while having headphones plugged in,i get these crackling clicking noises, when i move the sliders in the sound volume settings left right,i get these short freezes and crackle sounds
removing battery ( 5 minutes and more ) also changed nothing
Before every flash i do full wipe of everything, sometimes even 2 times (paranoia hm)
So basically, same thing on 5 different roms, fresh flashed or filled with apps to the max,and even without sd card or sim card
Right we'll start the process....
Can you force close some apps
Twitter
Facebook
Internet
Any others that you can, don't touch the main processes. Just basic apps.
Sound work?
If not, is fast boot on? Try turning that off and do the batt thing again for a few minutes and try again.
i force closed all i could and tried,no change
fastboot is one of the first things i turn off when i flash a new rom
tried both ways now, also again removing battery
but what i realise now,i discovered an artifact i didnt pay attention to (stupid of me)
without headphones sound on the phone speaker works perfect and all
but i realised, when i plug in the headphones,i was so focused on the crackle noises and clicks, that i missed the fact that from the moment when i plug them in (while playing a ringtone or any sound) the phone stops the sound on the speaker for like 1.4 second, and then again you can hear the sound on the phone speaker but very silent when i unplug, the sound gets back to normal loudness crazy
i tried 2 days ago to reverse the root process, with ace hack kit,but the process hanged, thought i bricked it,but brought it back to life everything else works perfect perfect, only this thing not
well, regardless of fixing this or not,i keep this beast, its an amazing device, and cant afford any servicing here, will be just sad not to be able to listen to music and play games enjoying on headphones i still hope its some software related business, and that i eventually find whats wrong
Not really any further information anywhere, I could only find
http://www.htcdesireforum.com/htc-desire-troubleshooting/headphonejack-problem/
Some solutions say to plug headphones in and turn off phone, remove the batt and then boot.
Other than that, you don't seem to be alone! Might be a software problem with the specific hardware so could be worth posting feedback in the dev thread as only a minority of users are affected.
I think it must be something in the original downgrade that it didn't quite like.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! After suffering with no speaker sound and no phone ringing, relying solely on headphones or vibrate to know a call was coming or an alarm was ringing, I found your post and tried it.
As you can see by my delight ... IT WORKED! :highfive:
Thanks again :victory:
Ok, that's weird.

[Q] HTC One X sound bug - A "Click" when sound starts/ends

Hello,
I just got my HTC One X a few days ago (white, o2-branded) and it has a quite annoying bug:
Everytime a sound (no matter if music, a game or just the volume adjustment sound) starts or ends, the phone makes a "clicking" sound. It sounds a bit like a camera shutter.
Hear for yourself:
(had to break up link because this is my first post, just remove the spaces)
youtu. be/thTyeud5foc
I contacted HTC's support and they told me it wasn't reported before and I should take my phone back to the store I bought it from.
Now my question:
- Has anyone else reported or read about that bug? Goggle couldn't tell me.
- o2 didn't deliver the 1.28 Update yet. Could it be a software problem? I remember some custom DHD kernels having similar issues. So should I just wait for the update?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers,
Phil

It happens with poweramp ... When you open it !
Sent from my HTC One X
I don't have poweramp installed...
On my phone, it happens whenever a sound starts/ends, no matter which app it is
Update:
It seems equalizer (an app I installed) is causing it. I didn't realize I had installed it, it was auto-restored by google when I got my new phone. As soon as I deinstalled it and rebooted the phone, the problem was gone. That's sad, because I don't like beats audio but want to be able to slightly increase the bass for some songs.
Anyone know another good equalizer app, preferrably with preset-widget-buttons on homescreen?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
i have the same, sounds like the camera lense is tapping the plastic
Check if you have Any app installed that alters your Sound, like equalizer, poweramp or similar. For me the clicking went away after I deinstalled and restarted the phone. You should probably untick quickstart before restarting.
It can be caused by DSPManager, disable all the tweaks for the speaker and reboot, works a treat.

Also can be caused by the virtual room settings, I would leave that disabled too.

I have the same issue. Stock phone, no root, Tmobile.
Hey guys
I picked up a One X on T-Mobile UK the other day (stock, not rooted yet) and I get exactly the same thing. I've only noticed it when playing music through Play Music (sideloaded the app via an apk found here), but now I'm going to look out for it when playing videos.
Given the comments made about poweramp and other equalisers, I suspect that it's something to do with the Beats Audio gubbins that comes pre-installed. So much for "studio quality sound", eh?
Hi,
mine issue is somehow close to yours.
When I connect my HOX to external speakers there is some sound like click which is heard every time s sound is produced by the phone. This click i hear in the beginning and the end of the original sound (music, notification, etc.). It's quite annoying as long as the overall sound quality of the phone is satisfying to me.
Also I dont have none apps affecting audio quality. Only the stock player + sound cloud + pocket casts.

I'm having a similar problem to others in this thread. I haven't installed any sound-altering apps, and no other adjustments have been made, yet whenever a sound plays a slight audio click follows... If anyone has an idea of how to solve this, I'd be very grateful. I'm on T-Mobile. Thanks!
---------- Post added at 11:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:14 AM ----------
I see on the FAQ that I should "disable any audio effects/audio DSPs to reduce the vibrations of the DAC"...
How do I do this, please? And is this only relevant if you've activated effects already? Thanks.
Is this problem still ongoing for most?
I got this phone for my cuz. When i tested the camera i heard the sound and thought was a camera thing and could be off if the camera shutter sound was disabled
after handing over the phone to him he says he still hears the sound whenever he plays any kind of audio
It was a stock phone from Verizon so I can't tell if any other apps were installed
I'll check and follow the instructions here then let you guys know.
If I find anything else that i can share to help out will also share that
G
That click sound is because of our ****ty DAC ... So if you want to have bad sound quality for example uninstall all equalizer apps...if you want to have better, then keep it and live with it that it will click sometimes...after a while it should disappear

Ok cool ONEX Master I'll see if it does go away.
Thought it was in fact a hardware issue.
Cause right now out of the country and have no simple way of just returning it.
Will upgrading the ROM or rooting and changing the ROM help?

it won't help normally as most EQ/DSP are producing this sound...it's because the DAC is forced to end sound so it will produce that click sound, but after a while it should be gone

[Problem]Stutter/buzz from rear/media speaker.

Hi all.
My GN is going through a rough patch and I can't nail down why.
Basicly, to keep this brief, the rear/media speaker is buzzing, crackling, static(ish) when any sound is played through it. It sounds a little like electrical interference, most of the time a bzz and a crackle.
I also noticed last night whilst watching a youtube video, that video playback freezed during a noticeable buzz from the speaker. Additionally, scrolling through the phone/browser seemed less responsive, slow and pausing for half a second on occasion. I'm unclear as to whether this is me looking for problems or an actual one, but I'm throwing it out there.
I figure the phone is beginning to die on me but I really can't tell if this is a hardware fault or software. I have contacted Samsung and whilst I wait I thought I'd see what you pro's thing.
Running 4.1.1.
I don't mess with kernals.
Installed Volume+ after sound issues to see if I can improve sound thru EQ, but have not increased volume.
I've included a recording of what the speaker sounds like.
Any help would be awesome.
Thanks.
Update.
Reply from Samsung.
Regarding your case, kindly note that the issue reported with the phone
indicates that the phone would need a software reset, or re flashing of
the Software, in order to have it operating normally again.
Please note that what has happened is caused by a minor software
confliction.

What is the easiest way of solving this?
I've tried a factory reset before through the phone menu's and also reset through boot.

Major CM9 Problem on Xperia Play

Back when I was on stock GB 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 my volume was extremely loud. Now on CM9 the audio quality is better but the maximum volume is terrible. Also my main problem, recently 1 of my speakers ( the bottom one, or the right one when the phone is open ) stops working and the left one gets EXTREMELY quiet. The only way to fix this is to reboot the phone and even then I usually happens again! WTF! someone help or confirm this is a know problem??

It's not. The volume in cm9 with NEVER be like stock. You can try dsp manager or volume+, but like I said it'll never be stock. As far as the speaker issue is concerned, it's sounds like a hardware issue not a software issue
I have noticed the Max volume on CM9 is quite low, I have to get some extreme sounds for my alarm.

Also 720p video recording does not work and makes my phone force close the app. Sometimes the camera app actually triggers my speaker to stop. I don't believe the speaker failure is a hardware problem I've been using stock 2.3.3 for almost a year with no problems what so ever but with in a month of using cm9 i get this problem typically once a day. That's what leads me to believe cm9 is the cause.

720p does work, I've used it..In order for 720 to work you need to use the correct kernel and wipe everything, not just dalvik cache. There is nothing in the rom that work cause your speakers to act that way, and as I've been developing since android 1.0 (and on cm for over 6 years) I know what I'm talking about. It may be a corrupt download that's the cause, but in general there has never been this issue related to the speaker brought up nor any complaints about 720p when done correctly. Sorry if any of this sounds rude, it's not meant to be

I'm using the included kernel in CM9 RC2, can you supply the kernel that allows me to use 720p? and whats the difference? If you don't have speakers problems with it I'll give it a try. Like I said no speaker problems what so ever on stock GB.... that's why I find this odd.

Audio problems when using earbuds with YouTube

A couple of months ago, my wife got a Samsung Galaxy S8 (Verizon variant). Overall, she's been happy with it. Recently, she pointed out that she cannot watch YouTube videos while using earbuds because there's little to no sound.
After checking it out for myself, I've found that videos playback normally without earbuds (internal speaker), but when connecting any set of earbuds, it's as if the primary audio in the video is virtually muted, while sounds like audience applause come through loud and clear.
I'd thought perhaps there was a setting related to audio (equalizer, maybe?) that could be adjusted to correct this, but I've found nothing. All of the volume sliders are turned all the way up. No change.
We just took an update to Oreo this evening, hoping that might correct the issue. It did not.
Has anyone else run into this issue? We're you able to correct it? If so, how? We'd appreciate any help you can offer.

Go to these settings, on the second photo pick preset 1, that should solve the issue
Thank you for replying. I gave it a go and there was no change. I even went so far as to back up the device and do a factory reset on it. Didn't restore the backup because I wanted to test the device "out of the box," so to speak. The problem persists.
Well, we're paying for insurance through Verizon... Guess it's time to pay them a visit tomorrow.
Thanks again!
