[Q] New to a rooted android phone - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Ok, I am new to this business of rooted phones, custom roms, and mods. I had someone root my phone mainly to help with battery life and to be able to use the wifi/tethering without T-Mob charging me extra or eating up my data plan every month. I have installed a 3rd party wifi app and it works fine but my data is still being eaten up. I have seen where people are saying the stock rom needs to be changed 1st. How do I do that? What is a custom rom and which 1 do I need, also how do I install it. I will be the 1st to admit this whole thing is foreign to me. I need help. Anyone willing to hold my hand and teach me? I'm a great student. Thanx for your time...

I wanted to say a public thank you to the guys that responded to my post. Your help and links got me the answers I was looking for. Not only is my device rooted but now it has a custom rom running on it! Very cool how this forum works, having people that are willing to help a newbie out with some basic stuff. Once again thanks guys, you are lifesavers...

I did have another question though. I did a bunch of searching and found a lot of stuff but none of them have helped me with my new problem. Here goes, I would like to use my phone as a wifi hotspot or tethered hotspot without it eating up my data so fast. I have seen that it is possible to do but like I said I can't get any of them to work right. They work ok but it is still chewing up my data. T-Mobile already charges me too much for data and I would like a work around I can use. Let me know if anyone can walk me through the steps. If you need more info from me just let me know...

T-Mobile has some of the cheapest data rates around.
Their capped/throttled data plans include hotspot functionality. The " truly unlimited plans" do not.
Also check the play store. I know of one called " foxfi" that a friend has had luck with.
there is no spoon.....

Are you running a jellybean ROM? I don't believe WiFi tether works for jb ROMs. U could try. An ICS ROM.
I wonder if touchwiz based jb ROMs have working WiFi tether?

Any tethering app will use up your data, there is no way around that.

Novice w/ New Evo 4g wanting to flash it to Boost But...

I know i'm not the only one but i'm like a kid waiting for Christmas. In short, I bought a new Evo 4G used, its not even 2 weeks old. Gingerbread is on it (4.22.651.2) and im waiting for the ability to root /unroot [which way im not sure] and last i was told its Ruu is not made or found yet. Please make this an easy transition and let me know here if the Ruu is created and if the steps will be different than the other steps you've guys shown here and on youtube, please! Also, I'm paying for Boost's blackberry service (60 bux a month) which i won't need when i get the Evo 4G going. I would be over grateful for your patience and consideration. Also, i did do my due diligence to look for all the info and tried several rooting options i.e.: Unrevoked3 and so on, with no luck.
Thanks!!

If you would have looked harder (sarcasm), you would have found that there is not root method for the newest OTA update. There are dozens of threads pointing this out.
Thanks, tgruendler [re-sarcasm] I did indicate that i knew the OTA wasn't able to be rooted yet HOWEVERm if it did come about if it could be posted here, i'd Highly appreciate it since there is a TON of information throughout the site! Yet, Thanks for the Razzin'

Not sure I understand your question but I presently have a Blackberry 8530 on Boost mobile but i just bought a Evo 4G which it seems to have been updated to Gingerbread 2.3.3. I can not root it to switch it to boost. I don't know if anything in your thread helped. But thanks!
you dont need root in order to get it on boost mobile
you just need to fix some things ,, due to forum rules i dont know the legal wording to use .....but on gb its a lil tricky to get the info fixed and that is where i am in this moment in time
Thanks for your reply. I've been doing alot of reading yet I'm still gun shy. Can anyone let me know if this thread is what i'm looking for?

[Q] Stop Throttling Hack

This being my first 4G device, I went through my allowed data usage a little early and now I'm on sub-mediocre and pre y2k Internet. I was curious to see if there were any legit stop throttling hacks
And yeah I know it won't help me now
You have two options:
1. Pay for the data you're using. Don't like being throttled? Upgrade your plan.
2. Look a little. Like a few threads down. It's not even like you have to look hard for an answer.

Unthrottling "supposedly. " even Melvin asked users input if it worked or even did anything.
If you've used up your data allotment I don't think there's anything you can do about that.

Lucky punk! I switched to 4.0 right before i reached my limit but still got shut down...
Weird thing though: the 4G icon is still in my status bar, but when I hit a bad spot it'll change to E. No change in speed though.
Also, darkside, I tried the voicestream apn, and although it did not Dethrottle me, my Internet speed is a tad faster and tons more stable. I spiked to 240 kbs once. May have been a glitch

One more thing.. The guy with the picture of the sweet evo (car) in his sig has mentioned a method of avoiding throttling by altering something in the file system. Does anyone know anything else about this?
Hi guys, I'm the one that told everyone how to do this in that other thread & I wrote up a tutorial which can be found in the link in my sig. Some people are reporting that its not working for them, but I've been testing this little tweak for 6 weeks now & it definitely works for me.
That said, I have not been able to test if it works to de-throttle, since I've never actually been throttled.

You say it's working for you for 6 weeks now. Then you say you've never been throttled to know if it works. :-\
That makes no since what so ever....
The change didn't work for me. And had I of known you've never been throttled before, I wouldn't have trusted the 'hack'.

I think she's trying to say she changed her APN prior to being throttled so she wouldn't know if it stops you from being throttled if you change your APN after you've already hit your data cap and are being throttled.
Didnt work for me.. Tried it while being throttled.. Left it until my cycle started today. It already showed the mb i used up..

I don't know what doesn't make sense. I said I knew for a fact that I've gone over my limit but haven't been throttled(I measured my data with a separate app), and that my data counter on T-Mobile.com hasn't budged since I changed my APN, therefore internet2 does not seem to be monitored. I never said I didn't know if it would work at all, I said I didn't know if it would work to de-throttle anyone because I changed it on my phone before I ever got throttled.
Sorry it didn't work for you, but I've gotten numerous reports from many people saying that it works like a charm.

[Q] titanium freeze list

Hey all, so new to the sgs3 as of yesterday, I remember finding a list that named off all the processes that you could freeze with Titanium for my sgs2... wondering if anyone has a list of removing the bloatware from our phones.
Seems with nothing installed, the phone is using almost 500 ram, where as the sgs2 was down to 264 on a boot...
So any and all help would be great
Also, is the cfroot the best way to go with rooting the sgs3?

I really don't know. I would suggest maybe disabling bloat first and using your phone for a few days.... This way you can see if you've disabled something that you require. If all is good then freeze. Also, if you do run into problem, you can always go back to stock. I'd have to do some more digging to see the difference....

Ubuntu Touch and our device

Just curious, didn't know if there was any interest in this or if anybody else had looked into it. it should be doable now that we have S-Off and can unlocked bootloaders. Has anyone else attempted a port yet for the m7vzw or would anyone be interested in seeing one and/or helping with one. I'm pretty limited in my knowledge of the subject, but would be willing to toss my hat in the ring to try and help out if there's any interest.
I would be on board for trying to port. I can ask some guys to see if they would help.

Sweet, I'm looking into it myself to see how much of a challenge it would be, I know there seems to be some issues with 4.3 on our device, but we don't have a cm10.1 kernel we can use, so I don't know how much that'll hurt us.

The cell or data connection problem is likely because that build is for the AT&T and T-MO M7. Not the VZW M7.

[Request] Port of the "X-Note" ROM built for the international NOTE4

I wanted to request any of the developers for our phone to port over a ROM made by soloilmeglio for the international variant of Note 4. The ROM is called X-Note and can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/snapdragon-dev/rom-x-note-build-1-0-nj4-t2935625.
The developer (soloilmeglio) seems to be well regarded and it looks like the ROM has been crammed with a ton of features. It would be nice if we could get it for our phone also.
You are probably better off contacting the developer and working with him to test and see if he would port it over. Good luck, looks like a great rom.

Yea I suppose if nobody steps up I'll take a shot at it myself. I'm not a developer but I did some research online and various guides teach that you need to replace about 3 folders in the system directory to port a ROM.
I was just hoping that one of the devs would at least acknowledge this thread and take my request into consideration....

I'd also be willing to test. I've never developed before, but I've been flashing for about 3 years now, so I'm moderate experience in testing.
To op if it the same principal as the note 2 which it probably is the international version is pretty hard to port att is the easiest.I'm still debating on the note or nexus 6 if I get the note I will help out some.

I read a few people from the T-mobile phone discussing porting in the thread. I had the note 2 before this phone but don't remember such a discussion. Would you mind linking a thread where people talk about difficulties porting an international version ROM?
Thanks

Just wanted to update you that i am working on this. I have it booting and everything is working with a couple of workarounds. I had to import the apn file from our stock rom to get lte and data working right. I am trying to fix the prl and profile update. I also have hangouts crashing whic i am working on. I reached out to the developer of the rom because i want his permission before i post it.

Awesome! Thanks!
I'm actually not going to post it yet. I spoke to the developer and we are going to bring it to sprint hopefully next week. If it doesn't happen I will post what I have so far. Profile and prl update don't work. LTE and data work but you have to bring APN from old ROM. Was never able to send MMS, not sure about receiving.

Wow. Thank you so much. I had given up any hope that a developer would take this up. I was going to take a shot at it myself but I was wary about the kinds of issues you mention and wouldn't have any idea on how to deal with them.

If all you want right now is the Sprint system update then I can do that as long as you have the original dev's permission to port and post it in our Sprint forum. If you already have data working then upload it to AFH or similar an PM me a link. But if im not mistaken, international phones lack a lot (if not all) of the necessary code/files necessary that reside in settings, jars & framework. Ill know right away if i peek inside just one file. If it lacks the necessary code/files then you might as well forget it because it would be like spending $3,000 to replace the transmission in your $500 Hyundai. Not worth it in that case.
I had the port working but data wasn't great. Only had 3g in certain places. APN wouldn't stick if you select LTE. I think it had to do with the profile not updating, so that might fix data. I'm actually getting a new phone this week because of a major lag issue so I stopped working on it. I spoke to the developer. He said he would help but has been unresponsive this week. I can wait till you release your next rim. You did a good job on the stock ROM. I wish I didn't have a hardware issue.

Thanks for trying. Do you think it would be easier to port the t-mobile version of this?
