[Q] Xperia Arc Replacement - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day everyone!
For the past two years I've been using Xperia Arc, and it lived a long and exciting life, but not it came the time to move on to something faster. Unfortunately, I am very limited in the amount of money I want to spend on my new phone, but I want to continue the tradition and keep with sony products. That is why I am here asking a question, what would be the best alternative for Xperia arc, which will be both quick and relatively cheap. I've considered Xperia V, Xperia Acro S and Xperia T, but i haven't found much of a difference between them, therefore, i need your help. What is the best Arc-like smartphone currently on the market for the cheap? ( I do apologize if I've wrote the question in the different thread, but I thought that it would be best asking Arc users for their advice)

if you want it with similar specs then get xperia J, it has a JB update and its cheap, plus has an appealing sony look

He mentioned about Xperia T or V and you are suggesting J

he clearly said "What is the best Arc-like smartphone currently on the market for the cheap?"
so Xperia J would be the best match for his budget

well, yeah, But I ment looking like Arc, not being slow as it is now! That's why Xperia V looks like the best of them all, cz looks like Arc (curvy) and ahve quite enough power.

My T beats the heck out of S3 almost in every benchmark.so T or V but v looks like arc more than T.

Thats what I have been looking for! and V does look like arc, so i guess, it should be v!
Is there any other similar smartphones on the market, similar to v
sorry for misleading you guys before, my English is not Brilliant

HTC has some dual-core alternatives, the One SV or the older One S. Basically any dual-core HTC from 2012 would be lightning fast compared to the Arc.
I'd stay away from LG altogether. Anything below an Optimus G is a junk. They all have horrible build quality.
I don't want to step any toes here but the Galaxy S3 Mini is a hell lot of phone for a very reasonable price. Phone prices depend on the market but in Europe, this phone sells less than the Xperia T (despite the price cuts on the T) and is a better phone (in my opinion).
Recently a friend bought an Acer. Forgot which model it was but it had 720p display in a 4.3 inch screen or something similar. He is pretty happy and I've seen the screen, it looks pretty clear and amazing. And the viewing angles are a million times better than the Arc (well, that's not fair, all Sony phones, the Z included, have terrible viewing angles. So maybe I shouldn't compare).

For that price no.there are some samsungs but they are heck ugly

I am currently living in Dubai, UAE, and prices on smartphones are quite cheap, however, I really dislike samsung design- they look too cheap, and a friend of mine owns S3 mini, says thats it's a great phone, but i dont like it looks. The thing why I like xperias was their UI, simple and usefull, compared to HTC Sense or Samsung UI. Thanks for your help anyways, I think I will have to go and look a bit more for them, or wait couple of month with Arc for now, which is barely living now( boot is slow, back cover broke, screen scratched, Overheating etc...)

Get a TX I'll be getting one in a couple of days :highfive:

if you want a good looking smartphone then go for HTC One, I know that is not sony, but it will provide you with a whole new experience. It is made out of aluminum so rock-hard. it has probably the best camera on an android smartphone (ultrapixels), and I read everywhere that the wifi range is breath-taking, the wifi range can simply blow our xperias away.
And you can see the rest of the specs HERE (not all info here are true, eg:camera)

Xperia SP (if affordable would be the best choice)
Xperia T
Xperia ion
Xperia L (cheapest of em all btw worth it)

[Q] Should I keep my Xperia arc s or sell it to buy other phones?

Is it hard for Xperia arc s to catch up with other phone like samsung galaxy s2 and iphone 4s?
Should I sell it?
Wait if jb comes to arc s then you can have that no need to sell wait for sony announcement
If you think these phones will improve your mobile life, then yes, but if you want one just to be up to date then don't bother,I had an iPhone4s and capability wise its not that different to the Arc S also I felt it had a big lack of customization compared to the Arc S e.g ROMS, firmwares, themes etc

I've just bought one so maybe not a objective adviser but that deepends what you need. For me arc s better that sgs 2. Better direct sun behavior than super amoled, almost as good camera beside 720 not 1080 recording, brighter screen, not as smooth web browsing but ok on ics, ant+ support, and half a price of sgs 2 in my carrier offer...
Wysyłane z mojego LT18i za pomocą Tapatalk 2
if I were to sell it, I would certainly not get an iPhone!
i've been thinking of selling my arc s as work issued us with an xperia s, but now everytime i pick up my arc, i fall in love with it again (seems all the lags and cracks are easy to forget! lol), might sell it and get the xperia t so at least i can still have a reminder of the perfect shape!
This is like tryin to get to the end of a rainbow mate....
So you sell your Arc S for something newer then....... 2 months later your "upgrade" is behind again...
IMHO the Arc S is still a great fone (I have one)
If you want to freshen it up why not try one of the ICS/JB roms in the developer forum?
As above. I've had my Arc for 16 months, I chose it above the sgs2 as I believed(and still do) that the screen and looks of the Arc outweigh the performance of the s2. I've been trying to make up my mind about a new phone since February, and while I'd be lying if I said there's not much difference between my arc and an s3 it still does what I need it to do. Probably the next nexus, or even the xperia T, will push me to change.

THIS.
Agree with you.
I was using a Nokia 5800 since 2010 and recently bought the Arc S and only because it was cheap. Only thing that are annoys me is the battery life... I' d say it's 50% less efficient in comparison with the 5800. :\

But the 5800 is too old now. I tried to use it today and now I really know why they call it "puchscreen", lol.

is this a good smartphone?

hey guys, i came from optimus 2x thread and my phone is getting old, i'm thinking to buy this phone, for people who have this phone already what can you say or what is your experienced? is this device can handle USB OTG in the future? what about the battery life specially in heavy gaming/usage? -----sorry for my bad english
What mobile carrier are you on? The zl is an amazing phone. I came from the note 2 which was also quad core and I feel this phone to be more speedy than the note 2 was. Benchmarks higher too. And compared to the g2x the battery life is a lot better from that. I can say that the battery is not ad good as my note 2 though.

Z or ZL?
I am coming from an Arc S and I'm just wondering if this phone would support mods coming from the Z where the forums is a lot more active; just like how Neo and Ray gets mods from Arc S...
I am still torn between the two, but overall I think both phones would be a good buy

Well from my past phone, I guess it was depend on what kind of mod it is, Roms of course wont work I wouldnt think, But themes and such might be the same.
AW: is this a good smartphone?
I'm using 2x as well atm, and I most likely will get the ZL soon. It was hard to choose between Z, ZL, HTC one and S4, but I think this one is the most beautiful and useful phone for me, although SoC isn't at Top anymore. I don't care of benchmarks, I need a mature phone and not some kiddy playtoy like samsung or htc. Thats what I think after weeks of thinking which phone it could be...
Don't want to offend anyone, just my 2 cents.
i think more people will go to sony ZL, sony Z is only special because of its water and dust resistant feature but other than that ZL is more attractive by its design and specially the IR remote

[Q] Z or SP for S?

Hello guys,
after the long wait for Jelly bean on my Xperia S ive had enough of that phone. It lags a lot in the Homescreen, its slow very often, the walkman random pauses, its sluggish and the support is as good as dead. So now im Thinking of buying a new phone in mid Juli. So my question is: What phone do you think i should get? Ive got my eye on the Z and the SP. I know SP is only a midrange phone, but I completely love the design of it. The Z is more expensive, but probably the better phone. I like Sony a lot, because of the general design and the UI. I wont even start about the support because,... well you know.. And im begging you, no Samsung suggestions )

might as well go all out and buy the Z. Its flagship status pretty much guarantees it will be first in line for updates (at least for this year, cant say anything bout next year). better specs and great design, plus water(Proof/resistant).
Yeah I thought so.. I just hope Sony fixes everything in Jelly Bean..
noo!! i refer you to uy SP i know Z is better in everything than sp but SP is simple and just like the S u can use it with 1 hand and its battery life is incredible than the Z so i refer you to go with SP

+1 me to the xperia sp is my next phone
If you are going to spend your bucks on Xperia Z range phones, I would suggest you to buy the HTC One...
Don't buy the SP, it's a mid - range non flagship phone - - - - - SO FORGET ABOUT LONG TERM SUPPORT(Look how Sony is treating their last year flagship XS, so SP will suck big time in terms of support from Sony)..
Yeah the xperia S is almost dead to Sony, thats the only thing ( except the the bugs) that i really hate about this phone..
Don't think and just go for Z. It has amazing support from Sony and should even have long term support. I think that it even has good developer support on XDA, No need to say anything about the performance. I can easily run any game or app without a single lag on my XZ. There is enough ram to anything that you want. Around 1-1.2 GB free ram is perfect for all user apps. XZ and SP are not comparable. If money doesn't matter to you, just go for a XZ. Believe me, you won't regret it.

Yeah HTC One is better in my opinion (even though I'm a total Sony fan). It's chipset and display is top-notch. Battery life is also better than Z.
HTC One - over 10 hours of video playback, almost 10 hrs of web browsing and 13 hrs of 3G talk time
Xperia Z - 5 and a half hour of video playback, 6 and a half hour of web browsing, 16 hrs of 3G talk time.
(source: GSMArena's battery tests)
Despite its 4MP Ultrapixel camera...HTC is trying to provide continuous software updates to provide better camera quality and improvements.

That was one of the bigger dilemmas i was facing HTC one or z.. I just dont really like the ui htc provides and i simply love all the things sony adds to the roms.. The walkman app for instance. It is by far the best music app

Yeah, thats what I was thinking.. Lets just hope the JB for Xperia S really fixes everything
Leaving my own personal rants on Sony's software support out of it; i too am in the same boat currently owning an Ion.
As far as the big Android phones for 2013, this is all i've noticed so far...still have plenty of time to figure it out before my upgrade, and i'm hoping i'm happy enough with JB to just wait it out until next year.
Sony Xperia Z/ZL: by far the absolute best physical design i've seen so far in a phone. 5" screen freaked me out at first, but its barely bigger than my Ion, just much more screen. I haven't held a ZL yet, but the Z is pretty incredible if you haven't seen it in person yet. At the same time, its a big 'who knows' on its support. Going by 2012, it'll get one update late summer...then barely ever get mentioned again...Soon after 18 more phones will be available, and Sony will continue having no realistic way of supporting devices they already sold.
HTC One: Good design overall. Most are reporting its very durable, good for me as i love dropping things that are expensive. Not sure about all that layered UI stuff they're up to yet though. Only bad thing for me would be the lack of SD card support.
Samsung Galaxy S4: By far the most popular choice, creating a community of users that rivals Apple, and the support that comes with it. Too bad, though, it looks like a toy. I wouldn't be surprised if the box included a Sesame Street DVD.
for all the above reasons, i'd be very happy just waiting it out and seeing what 2014 brings. maybe sony will turn it around company wise, maybe not. But i still think the Z is too early in this mess for it not to share the EXACT same fate as last years flagship.

Unfortunately, the midranger like XP are getting JB 1st before XS. Not to mention XS got ICS latter than 2011 devices.
The thing is the cost of XZ or HTC ONE is twice the price of XSP.

Yes, of course those phones cost twice as much as the XS. But lets face it, the XS has horrible support and an extremley buggy ICS.. Why do you guys think the HTC one is so much better? It probably is a bit better, but id really like to know why. Andthe Z is now already available for 500€ which is a lot less than the HTC

Suggestions for Xperia S replacement

Good Day guys,
First and foremost, this is not a SONY hate thread so all Sony watchdogs, give me a break okay?
After being disappointed with the recent turn of events thats been happening with my Xperia S, I am now planning to "upgrade" my hardware after a year of using my phone. I just need something that's less of a headache(good battery life, good performance, etc.)
I know the new Galaxy S4 sounds good specs-wise but honestly, its just too ugly for me. iOS device are out of the question too(EEEWW!)
So far, I still feel that Sony still comes on top with regards to producing gorgeous phones. I know they produce good firmwares too(I bought my misis a Xperia V: Its buttery smooth, good performance, etc.; hence that's what triggered this "envy" inside of me.)
Initially, I thought it was because of Jelly Bean but after upgrading my XS, I noticed that the difference is substantial. (My phone still feels like an ICS device, with just JB themes...if you guys get what I mean) Honestly, I dont blame Sony for not sending their top devs to work on the XS because lets face it, they don't make money from it anymore...and as most of us will agree, money makes the world go round....ANYWAYS....
So far the two contenders are Xperia Z and Xperia SP(XS predecessor? )
Specs wise, I'm more keen on the Z, Also, waterproof is nice(again, my misis has a V...and it probably paid off from what I saw her do to her phones)
But I've seen threads about the XSP out performing Z on benchmark tests...plus it also has an illumination bar! Also, the $200 price difference between the two here in Australia seems a lot.
Now before some of you guys blow-off on me and start posting things like:"Do a search!" or "This is not the right forum!"...
My question is this:
Coming from a Xperia S,... Which would you prefer?
Basically, I am asking opinions from you guys, Xperia S users, with regards to what you think (in terms of feel, size, practicality, etc.)
IMO, 5" screen is a bit of an over-kill if you ask me(especially transitioning from an XS)
Any personal experiences are highly valued.
Thanks in advance...
I had an iPhone 4 sgs2 lg thrill ion as of recent. I LOVED my galaxy s2 I honestly wanted to get it back after I got my ion. I've played with the new HTC one x? So many ones, but the sound was fantastic from the forward facing speakers. I'd also take the iPhone 5 I enjoyed my 4 . The galaxy has an open boot loader with tons of custom roms as well as a mod for inductive (wireless ) charging that I'd love to try when I get my new phone. I'm personally after the sgs4 or iPhone 5

HTC One could be an option if you want to choose another brand.
HTC one or a nexus device. Or you can stay with your Sony device and wait for the next release of a nexus device.
Was actually thinkin about HTC too...
I always hated how HTC phones looked "plastic" and toyish but after seeing the new HTC One, I'm really liking the new look with aluminum body.
Here's a good read:
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_vs_xperia_z-review-917.php
My sister had a SGS2 also and she loved it. Only thing I didn't like about it was the screen. Resolution and color wasn't that great compared to XS. I got turned off ever since I saw the SGS3 though(call me vain, but that design isn't just me)
Will the next nexus phone still be an LG? I have a really bad experience with them(owned 2 phones, both were crap)
Iphone5...its just too rich for me. Couldn't swallow paying for it (as well as buying all the expensive apps)
How about SG4 Active? I love its design more then SG4 and its water and dust proof.
such rtypte
I would definitely go for the Xperia Z. In terms of specs, it crushes SP. Bigger screen, higher PPI, higher resolution, quad-core processor over dual-core, 2GB of RAM over 1 GB, better camera. Anyway, I think you knew this already. Also being waterproof and dust resistant is a nice and quite handy feature. It is more expensive, of course, but it will make a difference. Getting an SP feels like an update while getting the Z feels like an upgrade. Just think about it, SP is quite similar to S and if you are going to spend money, even if it's more, spend it on something that will make a difference, that will make you feel like you have a new phone or you will end up with a polished version of the S. Now, it's your choice, but I highly recommend you go for the Z.

If it was for me, I will buy Xperia Z.
The best looking (IMO), waterproof, bigger screen than XS, best scpecs.
If the GS4 was not all made of plastic, the choice would have been more complicated
I would say go for HTC One. Better specs than XZ, boomsound, lighter UI(atleast lighter than sense 4), faster updates than XZ,good support for custom roms,etc..

Okay, went to Optus(Mobile provider here in Australia) earlier today to check out the phones.
I inspected 3 phones in total: HTC One, SGS4, and the Xperia Z.
So far, here's my personal verdict on the 3.
Build quality:
SGS4 - Looks sturdy from afar but once held, feel is too "plastiky". My Xperia S feels "tougher" than the SGS4. Somehow, I don't comfortable putting it in my pocket while my 2 year-old bounces around on my lap. The plastic case feels flimsy. It was a bit "squeaky" too.
HTC One - Feels really sturdy. The fact that it is made of one-piece aluminum, I wouldn't be surprised. I think that thing can double as a weapon in bar fights(metaphorically speaking, of course). Actually, Im surprised they did not make it water-proof. They could have just added a few rubber seals here and there and that would be it.
Xperia Z - With both glass front and back, it definitely feels better than the SGS4. It feels "durable" too.The power button was moved to a good location too. Its now a bit accessible, compared to my Xperia S. Its a bit high maintenance though when it comes to keeping it clean. I just held it for a few minutes and it was already coated with smudges.
Looks:
SGS4 - no comment.
HTC One - It looks good in a sense that its very unique for a HTC phone. The look is a bit retro also, which I like.
Xperia Z - Damn, that phone is gorgeous. For some reason, Sony did a very good job in making that phone look elegant and classy. Its decent enough to pull out in a black tie party yet it can still blend in well when going on a hunting trip.
I couldn't really comment on performance since I was not able to turn on both the HTC and Xperia Z since they didn't have demo units for those two.
At the end of the day, I went with the Z. Factoring in the price and features(I just love the waterproof feature), I'd be getting the most out of my money.
Phone will arrive in 5 days(they didn't have white, so I had to pre-order)
After that, its bye-bye Xperia S
Thanks for the help guys!

Top phones for me. . .
HTC One - Great hardware, great software, great build quality. The perfect phone
SGS4 - Great hardware, the best software, bad build quality. Although the build quality improved greatly compared to SGS3.
Xperia Z - Hardware trails behind SGS4 & HTC One, great software but bad support, and absolutely amazing build quality, the best build quality I've ever seen.
Nexus 4 - Probably outdated hardware but still great, direct Google software support, great build quality. Better wait for the next generation this coming months.
I was almost won over by HTC One...The thing that prevented me from getting is was actually the camera. 4MP?!? For a 2013 phone, thats a bit weak.
get Xperia ZL and join our community..
Hehehe

Will you buy another Xperia?

So just wondering how everybody feels here, after your experience with the XZL, will you buy another Xperia device?
I myself am conflicted. I loved this device when I bought it, the way it's built and the hardware were awesome. Plus I love the screen.
But I actually feel like this was a bad investment now. Sony takes ages to make software updates, and then takes ages to actually really roll those out (seriously 2 months between starting it and it getting to me?).
The customer service is pretty awful, and on top of that the expensive laptop I bought from them last year is no-longer supported an I need to fiddle about with it now to install drivers.
So on the one hand I really like the hardware they make, but on the other hand I feel like I'm not getting any value from it past the first 6 months of its shelf life. And that's simply not something I want to experience when I pay the kind of money the stuff costs.
How about you?
I love sony and their products..
Their build quality is awesome, not crappy plastic like samsung.,
Lovely ui
But I hate the way they update us..
Sony makes good hardware and good software but every manufacturer needs a lot of time.
But I will not invest in one more Sony because there is one better investment. An unbeatable one:
Project ARA

Build quality? Crappy screen for flagship phones! Bad viewing angles (xperia z, xperia z1 and my ZL). Even mid range Moto G had better screen. Thank God! now they fixed it in xperia z2. Severe heating issues in xperia z2 that force closes after 2 mins while recording 4k videos. Only good things are looks. Flagship phones for every 6 months. That's insane. Sony releases n number of phones. Instead they should concentrate on few phones.
Yeah absolutely
I will buy XZ2...
Well not now, maybe couple years later xD
Probably not. Their phones are getting too big for my liking. Sucks though, as i love the camera and walkman apps.
Honestly the XZL is a nice phone, but owning one kind of feels like I've signed up for something that's nearly unsupported in the dev community... *shrug*...
It feels like we're constantly waiting for an update to actually push out... (eg .230 and now .233)
For me this is a perfect phone.
I don't care about viewing angles, when I look at my phone I look at it straight ahead and not from the side. In fact, I would prefer even worse viewing angles so when I'm using my phone in the train or bus my neighbour isn't able to see what I'm doing...
Updates are ok! I once had a lg phone, it took them two years to get android 4.0 running... And 2.3 was full of bugs, didn't get any bugfix release.
This phone has a great hardware and a very cool UI. No need for me to run any custom rom. Rooting is very easy, so the social media crap can be deleted (in fact facebook as a system app is the only negative point so far).
Short answer: yes, I will certainly buy Sony again. And again I will not get it through my provider, I will buy it in store to get an unlockable bootloader.
I will switch back to Samsung or go with a Nexus the next time. The CM support is just crap for my xperia zl and many other xperia device.
The XZL is my third xperia. After this, I'm going with nexus. I've been so disappointed in so many ways.
Xperia X8, X10Mini Pro, X10, Arc S, PLAY, Pro, Mini Pro, Live With Walkman, P and Xperia ZL..
this is my tenth xperia's phone, probably i would get Samsung Galaxy K Zoom after this.. it has 20.7MP with XENON Flash..
I really miss a phone with XENON flash.. last phone i owned with xenon is lumia 1020, before that is SE Satio..
My question, why sony didn't want to include Xenon flash to it's Xperia?

The XZL is my second xperia and i like sony, the UI is one of the best i see in an android phone, the walkman app is amazing, i dont have any plans of change it anytime soon, but i will probably buy another xperia, or a nexus..
Love my ZL but I won't buy another unless they produce another the same size. All the newer stuff have giant bezels and make the device way to big. Also don't like the glass backs.
I think whatever I buy next will be a Google play edition...

You know the main things that made me move towards the XZL over other phones were:
Camera
Walkman
IR blaster
The other specs were covered by other phones, but since I had this I noticed that while the camera is really nice, I bought a much better one from the store. Walkman seemed cool and all, but Poweramp which I still had from before was superior in pretty much every way. And Samsung is now putting IR blasters on everything they make.
And others use Sony's camera sensors as well. So the only way Sony could really persuade me to stay with them is if they made my experience with this phone so good, that I stay out of solidarity.
But so far they have done their level best to alienate me, slow as hell updates, which when they finally arrive are so buggy that they feel unfinished, and terrible customer service.
This entire time I feel like I have an unfinished product in my pocket or hand, it never feels complete or well finished. Which is not cool if you spent this kind of money in one go.
So really, I could just buy a Samsung and continue using the apps I bought and have a better experience than this.
If the next Xperia got a camera like Lumia1020 (manual focus/xenon), surely i'll cancel my order for Samsung K Zoom and go for another Xperia..that would my eleventh Xperia phone ?
i'm a die hard fan of sony product, even home theatre and tv at my home is sony branded..
even my car audio system also is sony branded.. ?

Absolutely not - unfortunately, as it turns out, the Xperia Support is probably the most terrible you can get. I made a post on it in their forums, but I doubt it'll lead anywhere. If you're curious: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z-ZL-ZR/Horrible-Support-Xperia-ZL/m-p/751775#U751775
Yes.
This is my second xperia (X10 was the first). The only thing with this phone I still not getting used to is the front camera. I love the size and if Sony releases another handset like this, I would give it a try.

oh damn, this made me lose all my trust to Sony.. well f**k you sony for terrible customer care..

Personally I don't care much for the Sony software, I'm using PA 4.4 and I'm quite happy with it, and any other phone I get will probably end up being the same.
What it really depends on is if they make a phone with everything I want in terms of hardware, currently what comes closest is the Oppo Find 7, if that was 5" it'd be perfect, but alas there's the trend to make phones bigger...
I'm pretty happy with my ZL so I'll probably end up waiting another year at least before getting a new phone.
