Sticking with S3 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

After reading the reviews on the S4 camera, I'm quite happy to stick with the S3 until the next update cycle.
I guess it's finally time to root this puppy. Hopefully the last ota didn't lock me out.
Sprint replaced my HTC 4g Lte with the S3, so I'm pretty late to the game.

Not sure what reviews u read but all the ones I read praised the s4 camera. Its a notable upgrade if u dont have a s3. But the s3 will be getting all the s4 features so really no point in upgrading.
My s3 is running find with no lag and I doubt I would see that much of a performance gain in the s4 besides benchmarks

Just played with one here at work, it's low light abilities are much better than my S3, not had time to do a real comparison yet though.

In most reviews, it finished behind the new HTC, LG and even the iPhone (in some categories).
It's a big bump pixel-wise, but it's not over overall game changer.

Me personally I like to skip a generation of phones. I'll pass on the S4 and get the S5.

Not sure what reviews you are reading but CNET did a camera shoot off between the s4 iPhone 5 and HTC one and the HTC one finished last.

Sprint replaced my EVO lte with an S3 as well and I have been lovvvving it. I have an upgrade coming up in August and pondered the thought of getting the S4 but after seeing the review videos (especially those comparing it to the HTC One), Ive decided that it would be a waste of money to upgrade to that....especially when we're going to see 75% of the S4 features in future ROM builds.
Side question...what was specifically being said about the camera?

Just one of hundreds of article's

There are plenty of reviews that say the opposite, especially in low light situations.
However, some of you are not getting the point of the thread... Even if the camera was a game changer, is that really enough to upgrade?
I personally feel the changes/upgrades are not worth using an upgrade. The S3 was made well, and I can hold out until the S5.

Have you considered the HTC One at all? Im kind of stuck on what to do for my next upgrade. Im not a huge fan of there Sense UI but I must say the design of the phone and some of its features are def tempting.

Also to add to that...im kind of fearful that Samsung is going to get in the habit of coming out with their next model but only to make minimal upgrades to software/hardware and keep their design the same...almost like apple...I know this is me speculating and looking WAYYYY too far ahead but does anyone else feel the same?

I have a rooted and heavily modded s3 I really love, but I'd upgrade for the screen alone.

As a previous owner of the HTC Lte 4g, I can tell you they are very developer unfriendly. They play games with releasing the source only when the next update comes out; leaving the developers with outdated source.
I do think HTC's photo chip is superior (not sensor). Their overlay is smoother and less memory intensive than touchwiz. If HTC can market properly and can get back in the good graces with vendors, they have potential.
I only wish Samsung spent as much time on the hardware as software. Actually, most of it is worthless. I have most of it disabled.

This. I just used my upgrade for the S3. Yeah, I was impatient to get a new phone, but I did a lot of reading on the S4 and while it looks great I think the S3 is going to be relevant for quite a while longer. I don't know much about the S2, but my Epic was running real good up until the time I shattered the glass and the charge port went out. I have TEP, but didn't have the $100 for a new phone.
Another reason to go with the S3, I saved $200 buying it....
I still have my Epic, thinking about using that as a learning device and take it apart.

I feel like I am the only one that noticed this and I have to see anyone else mention it. But the s2 to s3 was such a little upgrade if you do a side by side comparison both in software and especially hardware! Yet it was a massive game changer and I also jumped on that band wagon. Maybe I bought into the hype but oh well. Now if you you compare the s3 to the s4 specifically hardware alone! Its a massive change way more significant than the s2 to s3 was. Points to consider.
720p vs 1080p
3xx PPI vs 4xx PPI
Corning glass 2 vs 3
8mp shooter vs 13mp (with arguable better lowlight)
Dual core snap dragon vs quad core snap dragon
No ir port vs ir port
No true world phone vs true world phone
2100mah battery vs 2600mah
These are high level non finely grained specs and hardware only as there is speculation the s3 will get a lot of the same features software wise. But you can see there are major changes all around.

I can't since my contract isn't up till July 1st ill have plenty of time to wait and see what the next big thing will be.
Most likely ill be getting the s4 but if there is rumors of the note 3 with a snap Dragon 800 I might just wait

Galaxy Nexus compared to AT&T Galaxy Note...Nexus wins out IMO

It's funny to me, when I first took my Galaxy Nexus out of the box when I first bought it, I thought that was a large phone (though I didn't think it was too large). Well once I took the Galaxy Note out the box, I no longer consider my GNex to be large. The screen of the Note is almost the size of the whole GNex. Depending on how you look at it, that's a good thing or a bad thing. All in all, after playing with both of them side by side for a while, I've come to the conclusion that the GNex is better due to it being faster in essential things like browsing and GPS. I just wish the GNex got as loud as the Note does.
Here's a link to my brief comparison:
http://thesmartphonechamp.com/smartphone-heavyweight-bout-galaxy-nexus-vs-att-galaxy-note/
I also have both and like both! I love the Gnex because of ics , 0 crapware installed pure google experience.
But i love the note because of the big screen, long battery life, and lte. The screen of the gnex looks a little better because it's smaller. The gnex might be better for you and the note might be good for someone else... It's all about taste!

You're right, it's definitely all about taste. I think the Galaxy Note is an awesome device. That screen is tremendous, but for me it is a little bit too big. I value one-handed operation, and I don't really think the Note is very well suited for one-handed operation. For a person that doesn't mind two-handed operation I think it's a fantastic device. For example, my uncle is geeked about that phone and intends to buy it. I took it over his house yesterday so he could see it and now he's in love with it lol. He likes two-handed operation, so yep it's like you said, it's a matter of preference. Just wish they had toned it down with all the bloatware (the phone has a massive amount of bloat). Also, the Gnex shines with ICS and the optimizations really show up in the browser, as it blows the Note away in browsing speed. It really isn't close. I'm curious to see how much improvement the Note's browser speed will see once it gets ICS. I just hate how they will "uglify" ICS with Touchwiz on the Note.
The international note is faster than the Gnex due to the Mali 400 GPU but on the AT&T version it has an adreno GPU which is probably the worst GPU series of all major ARM processor families

I think too much is made about GPU's. None of the GPU's are incapable and run software and games just fine. They only matter in benchmarks...which really don't mean anything at all besides message board bragging rights. I think if there is fault to be found in the AT&T Galaxy Note's hardware it would be the processor. They went with the S3 Snapdragon which definitely isn't in the upper tier of dual core processors. The S3 has less than half the memory bandwidth of the OMAP 4460, A5, and Exynos 4210. Then don't forget it isn't even an A9 chip either. BTW the OMAP4 thus far (the S3 has already been counted out) is the only current gen chip that will be compatible with the upcoming wifi display feature that will be added in an update later this year. Heck the Tegra 3 isn't even compatible.
I'm curious how the battery life compares between a Nexus with the 2100mah battery and a Note with the 2500mah battery.
I wouldn't even look at a SGS3 if the Note had stock ICS and NFC. Otherwise it's worthless with TW barfed on it. The Note is a fantastic mobile otherwise. I do miss the notification light though.
(I'm talking about the international version. That 4 button abomination just released doesn't count.)
(I know I can flash it to whatever I want. I want stock ICS OOTB.)

I agree with you that Touchwiz is definitely not the greatest. I've seen the leaked ICS Rom and you can barely tell the difference between it and Gingerbread visually. As for the US version of the Note, I think it looks much better than the international version with its giant ugly PHYSICAL home button. Besides, that one home button is a little too iphone-ish for me.
I have yet to play with note but I have a feeling I will trade this guy for a white note.

Well I just played with the Note at an ATT store last night, it was beautiful.
The case didn't feel as premium as nexus, but ahmigawd the screen!
I originally wanted a Note but it didn't support T-mo properly so didn't import it. No way in hell I'd get it for ATT or VZ (both can diaf).
However I don't feel you can really compare the Nexus to a Note, it's in its own category, the size will basically polarize people. The interesting thing about the Note is that, pretty much the only complaint about it is that it's "too big", reviewers list that as a con - which imo is just dumb, considering it was intended to be a big phone.
I'm going to hold out for the Note II

We should know in a couple days, I would assume.
Had the Note (international) now have the GNEX. Don't fall for the Note. It's neat, but it's still a Touchwiz-y typical device. AOSP forever. I'm done with non Nexus devices. It's just not worth the agony of always feeling left behind on the software/functionality front.

You'll like the note. I loved mine. The 5.3 inch is huge at first, but warms up to you real quick. I just traded my international note for a gnex. But it wasn't because I was dissatisfied with the device, I just needed a phone that I can wear in a holster for work. Besides, no matter how much I like a device, I can't hang on to just one, I have to try em all . I haven't received my gnex yet, but lord knows how long I'm gonna be able to hang onto it once I get it.
I just played with the att note, brand new just arrived today. Its bigger than i thought! One thing i noticed is that thing is laggggy compared to my nexus. I did side by side comparisons in many major apps and the nexus spanked it in every instance. Lists just had low frame rates and stuttered a bit. But the nexus was silky smooth for example both scrolling the same search in the market, or youtube or a webpage. Must be due to lack of exynos? Thank goodness i love my nexus.

What would make you upgrade?

For those of us still on a SGSII, no matter what the reason is (no money, no stock, price too high for s3, nothing worth a 2 year extension), what would make you upgrade?
For me I'm hoping that the next Nexus will be the super phone of my dreams AND available for t-mobile.

No beats because they are only optimized for crap headphones. Once you start (I know its not the best quality... but its better than any crap headphones I can buy) streaming to your done up car stereo, that can handle REAL audio quality... then you don't want any help at all.
Just today I discovered lows I never knew existed on one song because I'd never played it in my car.

Money is always the reason.
If someone were to buy my phone for a decent price, I'd upgrade.
Other than my 2 years between upgrades being up, the things that would make me upgrade would be:
Much faster processor (better than Qualcomm S4)
720p non-pentile display
Overall size not significantly larger than t989
2gb ram
Most importantly for me: DAC as good as Wolfson
And nothing missing the t989 has. I'm extremely happy with my S2.

You hit the nail on the head with the wolfson dac. That things kicked SO MUCH ASS with my epic and nexus. Also I'd take a quad core s4 SoC over a quad exynos any day. 10 bucks says quad core s4 ass rapes the quad exynos when released. The dual core s4 krait SoC is the second fastest SoC out behind the quad exynos.

But to answer the question the next nexus will make me upgrade. Having already been an ex nexus s owner I've experienced how much better the dev support was on that device. Worlds ahead. I had aokp on my nexus last year.. with the same exact features aokp milestone 6 has and more. With the nexus you could raise the wolfson dac 5 decibels above its stock setting for some AMAZING sound processing and you could tweak the amoled screens brightness contrast and colors with all with voodoo sound. I NEED that back in my life. Call me insane but I've considered taking the huge performance hit and going back to my old nexus s because of how amazing the benefits are over this t989.

Truthfully, this. I know we're all here cause we care about benchmarks and the latest software, but I can't think of anything I want to do on this phone that it can't deliver.
I'm pretty happy with my phone now too. One of my friends just got an s3 & I got to play with it for a while last night, and I can honestly say I was NOT blown away. I ran some benchmarks on it and my phone either came out ahead or VERY close on each test. I'm sure it's probably all due to software, but still. I thought the screen on mine looked better too, honestly. I could see the pixels more clearly on his even though it's higher-res. I'm perfectly happy with the t989's performance, the only thing that could make me upgrade would be a significantly larger display since I'm a size queen, lol... I've heard that the Note will be coming to T-Mo this month, so that's what I'm saving my pennies for
I agree if the nexus came out for tmo I'd hop on it quick!

Nothing.
I don' t NEED the latest greatest, BUT, ONE THING that would make me upgrade, a camera capable of shooting over 200dpi, NOT the 72dpi garbage we're being given.
Otherwise, the SG2 is an EXTREMELY capable phone and they (manufacturers) are just tossing little bones to try and get people to ugprade and keep up with the Jones'..
....forget it, no thanks.
Saving my money.

Although I hate to admit it

The Galaxy S III has been outclassed in the performance department by the iPhone 5. Everything is faster on it with the new Cortex-A15 processor by it. I am not sure how the international GS3 does against it overclocked. But it's probably safe to say the new iPhone is the most powerful LTE device on the market at this moment. Although it's not likely, it would be nice of the Galaxy S IV used the Exynos 5450.
The iPhone's hardware improvements alone won't make me switch because it's still an iPhone that runs iOS but I hope Samsung turns up the heat in response.
In before lock.
Yeah, ok.

Why? This is about the Galaxy S III and its brand. There's nothing wrong with discussing how it handles against other phones on the market.
The iphone 5 benchmarks were false (unless you were talking about other benchmarks).
From Adam outler on Google Plus:
CNET posted a bogus report on benchmarks. I had problems believing that a dual core from apple would be faster than every Android device so I decided to go to the source. Turns out the Galaxy S3 and the Nexus7 both score higher benchmarks than the iPhone 5.
You can see here for yourself. IPhone scores 1590, Galaxy S3 scores 1766. These are the benchmarks mentioned in the article below.

It would need alot more than that to get me to deal with all it's other shortcomings.
Who gives a rats ass about the fastest phone? People who are power hungry on specs slightly bug me. The S4 processor with the current GPU play everything flawlessly. Who cares that the ifail 5 has a better processor. Its a common fact that as soon as a new product is released, its outclassed by the time you change underwear at night. Pretty soon were all going to holding quad core/12 MP/1080p display beasts and then god will descend from the heavens and scoop us all us.... or a nuclear strike will occur and we will all be turned into dust.
Let apple have their glory because Samsung did when this phone was announced.

Outclassed how? A Jellybean S3 benches faster than the iPhone 5 by a healthy margin and still has a bigger screen and more RAM.
I was just posting stats that I found there is nothing that apple could ever do that would make me abandon the samsung line of android devices. I have the note tablet as well and that blows the iPad away in my opinion.

Ok... Yeah the crap phone 5 is five months newer than my GS 3... It had better be faster, otherwise they have bigger problems in that company than i thought. Hell with a additional 5 or 6 months, it ought to be faster than it is. Guess what, when the SGS 4 comes out in another 6-8 months, it will be faster than the icrap 5... and so forth and so on... Thus is life.
In before the lock. (to bad i can't lock it)

Ultimately stock vs stock may be faster (marginally), but we can still over clock and optimize like crazy where they can't, and this will produce significant differences in performance. It all lays with the combination of hardware and software and the ability to manipulate it... this is where android will always win, because they give us the freedom to do these things.

The only thing the iphone5 has that I want is the almost unbreakable screen. They did some magic on that.
Other then that the iphone would be useless for me as it doesn't do anything I need and everything it does do is sub par

Pretty sure the only reason the screen is "almost unbreakable" is because of the solid aluminum back and sides. Unlike the iPhone 4/4S, the screen doesn't really seem to cushion any of the blow like it did on previous devices, instead being taken more by the aluminum. As we all know, Gorilla Glass (or whatever they may be using in the iP5) can handle damn near anything on the face, but an impact to the edge is where the shattering happens.
I still wouldn't want one simply because of the screen, because i simply just don't drop my phone. Never have, and doubt i will anytime soon.
Umm, OP, you do realize that the OS are different and demand different things from its hardware right? No offense but it would be stupid to compare two completely different OS that utalize different hardware. IOS is fast in the iPhone 5 because it was made to be fast on iPhone 5. Not because the hardware is fast. Its called optimization. Which iOS is for THAT hardware.
Just my two cents.

same boring os and look as the last 5 yrs
no nfc(even though i dont care about it im sure some do)
no wireless charging
weird looking skinny screen
headphone jack on the bottom(wtf were they thinking)
constantly being scared to upgrade os cuz of waiting on jailbreak
battery life sucks
yea id say once again apple made a phone that is already behind everything else

the iphone only seems fast cuz the hardware never does any work. the apps do all the work themselves. its just the way everything is coded. considering all that i still dont understand why the battery life always sucks.

HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S4? Anyone upgrading?

I got really disappointed when Samsung released the gs4 and it looked basically the same as the galaxy s3 just with a bigger screen and a few new bells and whistles. So I'm opting for the HTC one cause that thing is sexy all around. What about you guys?

Are you choosing a phone based on looks alone? Cause the HTC isn't even up to par with the current Euro SIII, let alone the S4 in terms of specs. I guess its about preference but personally I'm pretty intrigued by the S4 eight core processor in a frame slimmer then the SIII, not to mention the 13mp camera features, 5.0 SAmoled (yay no more pen tile) I just don't see a comparison IMO.

First of all, the HTC one has a qualcomm 600 processor which is that the same as the Samsung Galaxy S 4 has in USA, except that the s4 is .2ghz faster in terms of clock speed. Second of all, I'm currently on a contract with t mobile and I was talking about upgrading to the Galaxy s4 or the HTC one, so there's no way I can get the eight core s4. The galaxy s4 has a pentile display. Plus I don't really care about the megapixels or ultrapixels of the camera as long as my pics turn out good and not look like they were taken from a potato.

The source codes take sooo long to be released.
Look at the Amaze 4g and youll see what im talking about.
An awesome phone treated like crap lol.
When it comes to phones and tablets i will not use anything other than Samsung or a nexus. I just can't do it. HTC is a lot harder to root and it takes longer for development and i don't see anything else competing with Samsung.

-2d fighting game like art of fighting for the SNES
-multiplayer fps where you create your own map with a creative mode (minecraft style)
-roller coaster tycoon style game
-get phone out of sleep mode
-many more!
Just message me which idea you want info on and I'll tell you!

I had an HTC VIVID before this phone (cracked the screen), and it was a pain. Unlocking the bootloader, then flashing boot image and blah blah blah just to root and rom it. And then the development thread was WEAK (at the time ) so it was like for no point. I agree with the 2 above mentioned posts regarding source code & development. Its seriously ridiculous & sad!

If I had to pick one of those 2 I would probably go with the HTC One, build quality is way ahead of the S4, I'm tired of plastic phones. My S2 has survived its fair share of drops without no significant damage though so I'm happy with that. Processors are nearly the same unless you're comparing the international S4 and HTC One. The One also has a nicer screen (more ppi). It seems like the biggest knock on the One is the fact that it doesn't have upgradable storage and battery but 64GB is more than enough for me and I never carry an extra battery for my S2 so that is pointless. When it comes to camera quality, the S3 with its 13MP will take better pictures when zoomed in since it has more pixels but the HTC One will blow the S4 out of the water when it comes to night pictures or anything with low light (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I was honestly disappointed with the S4, it seemed like all Samsung talked about at the news conference was all the bloatware they added onto the phone that I'm never going to use.
This is a laughable question. S4 stands head and toe over the crap HTC is throwing out nowadays.

I believe that will be the international s4 with the Exnyos processor that probably wont have much development from what i have read. the North American version
still uses Qualacom, so i am thinking the development will be just as good as the S3.
As for which one i will choose, I will need to see them side by side first before I make any decisions.

If you are one of those people who root and flash away from Professionally built phone software in favor of barely working featureless lackluster crap produced by CM and it's near relatives there is no point worrying about having the newest phone anyway cuz you clearly are not going to use it for anything other than looking at your reflection. honestly you kids would be just as well off with a flip phone and a be-dazzeler.
I could understand the CM worship if this was a walmart prepaid phone with some lame flavor of aosp on it then CM might be a slight improvement but leaving Touchwiz for CM is a huge downgrade every time, all Tochwiz needs is some speedtweaks and a tweaked kernel.
Anyway +1 going to the S4 when It's here, might add a note 3 or even the note2 if I can get a good deal on it!
Wow makes me regret getting the Nexus 4 after what I saw in the GS4. Should have waited. But one this is having Google's latest and greatest code feels awesome. GS2 also has outstanding support and CM10.1
I really miss HTC's look and quality. But they have always been terrible battery life phones. Each one I've had except for the G2. My GS2 is still a champ and love that samsung releases the CODE that makes CM even possible.
And at the presentation I really have to reconsider no SD support and no removable battery. Just this week my old myTouch 4G I gave to my cousin, the battery can't hold charge. He got it replaced and its good as new. To me, having a removable battery just makes it easier to replace it when it does go bad.
I can kinda live with 16 gig and no SD Card, unless you are a heavy media user. But having a removable battery makes it possible to replace it. I don't mind the Samsung plastic. It is cheap and got a mini dent that I can't figure out how it happened on my GS2. I should have put a screen protector to prevent that. Still a mystery how it happened.
My LG G2X, I've never ever ever used at screen protector and its still flawless. Samsung **** is sensitive. They could at least use better plastics if they are sticking with that material.

If you even read the news... htc is yesterday's news...an exact quote "it's not in the kids club anymore" and that is why they pushed the date back for the htc one release...it's not even that it's hard to root, it's that it leaves traces for the carriers and htc to know you've rooted...

+1 ! Considering selling y S3 on eBay and paying the difference to get the S4.
I want to know what is the difference between the S3 and the S4. Its not that more different. The only reason I would get for being wireless charging and the core. My point is that I still have htc evo which is a great phone and the camera is still good. I cant really tell the difference except it is lighter. Also it makes a great back up phone for my S3. phone comes put every year how can ppl afford it and itsba waste of money I rather weight every 2 years after the s3.

I'm going to sell my s3 and get the S4 or HTC One and pay out of pocket pretty much what a upgrade would cost. You just have to time when to sell your old devices so you get a good amount of money to cover the next device if buying off contract. There is quite a difference in the S4 and S3 but the S3 is still a great device, just no longer the latest and greatest. Some worthy key upgrades of the S4 are a 1.9 GHz quad core processor compared to the S3 1.5 dualcore. 1080 screen with 441ppi S3 306ppi S4 13 mp camera S3 8 mp, S4 4.2.2 Android S3 4.1.2 etc. Plus software features updated apps etc. My brother has the S4 its nice.

My brother got his last Friday, so I've played with it. I was at his house today and I will be there tomorrow. He has kids so there is so much stuff on it its crazy. Mine will be much better. He has a really cheap case to. Its kind of wrong to me. I had to remove a task killer app off of today and explain those are no longer needed. But anyway when I was in Best Buy today the Samsung guy had a S4 in his pocket and he let me play with it for an hour. The camera is amazing I already know that. They had a TV set up so I was looking at pics on a big screen through whatever Samsung calls their mirrorcast. Its a great phone and definitely feels like a upgrade from the S3. And I will appreciate it even more when I get it because on Sunday when my eBay auction ends I will be shipping off my S3 and going back to my S2 until next week when I get the S4. Keeping it all in the family.

Oh ya and the screen is freaking amazing. I played with my brothers but unless you look at some pics you don't get the full feel of how many pixels there are. At best buy there was a bunch of preloaded pics taken by some ridiculous photographer supposedly with the S4. But those pictures looking absolutely amazing on the screen. I though my Samsung 8000 series TV had a good picture on it.

I will say so far the device is well worth it. A few minor bugs here and their but can be fixed with updates easily. A few features of the phone are amazing. However the scrolling webpages with your eyes is alright but its more like it reads your eyes and your tilt your head, hard to adjust to but fun to creap people out
So far Sprint is the only one with a unlocked bootloader and no real devolepment has struck. Got a couple of CM 10.1 ASOP and i believe Slim Bean. We have one guy who made a rom with all bloat crap removed which is night. Other than that not too much other than minor mods like hotspot, 4-1 reboot, and something else.

Its still really good and the quadrent scores are in the ballpark of 12000. so when its fully OC and UC it will be an awesome device. Battery life is incredible even with a lot of use. But the major bugs are to much bloatware running in background (my opinion on that part) causing a lot of lags but clears up easy but when it hits its noticeable. Other bug is or could be a defect is some devices have a red, blue, or purple tint on solid black screens which i haven't seen.

Quadrant scores mean zero/zilch/nada to me. It's all BS to me honestly lol.
Well I understand to some it is just BS. But to others it means a lot. You take something like the htc hero it cant even touch 600 in quadrent as the thing was slow as dirt and now with like the s4 its over 12000 which at that point it really doesn't matter because no game or anything is going to crack that down. It may have hiccups and lag once in a while (due to bug) but either way it is fast and thats thats counts
