How to Enable and Disable On-screen/soft ButtonsEnable on-screen buttons:]
You will need root access for this.
Please take complete backup before proceeding, in case if you do something wrong..
If your phone isn’t rooted, you can use this method to root the phone.
You will need root access for this. If your phone isn’t rooted, you can use this method to root the phone.
Install ES File Explorer File Manager on your phone from the Play Store. This is a file manager that will be used to edit those system files to enable/disable on-screen/soft buttons. Those already experienced with using a root-enabled file manager can go directly to 4.
Open ES Explorer. Then, click the menu button on your device and click Settings. Here, tick the “Up to Root” option. Then go down and tick the “Root Explorer” option, then press Allow/Grant button when prompted to grant it root access. Then, tick the “Mount File System Option” as well. Once all three options are selected, press back to exit the settings.
Hit the Up on top in ES Explorer till you reach the outermost folder (till it says / at the top).
Go into the system folder, then scroll down to find the build.prop file. Tap on this file to start editing it. If you get an “Open With” prompt, select “ES Note Editor”.
Now, at the end of the file (at the bottom after the last line), add the line “qemu.hw.mainkeys=0″ (without the ” quotes), then save the file (press the Menu button to see the Save option).
Then, reboot the phone. After the phone boots up, you should have the virtual on-screen buttons on your phone
Disable Soft Menu and Back keys:
In ES Explorer, now scroll to the system » usr » keylayout folder, then tap on the Generic.kl file. Select to open the file as “Text” in the first popup, then select “ES Note Editor” to open the file.
Now, find the line that says “key 139 menu”, then add a # in front of the text, so that it becomes “#key 139 menu”.
Similarly, add a # before the line that says “key 158 back”.
Then, save the file.
Reboot the phone, after which the capacitive menu and back keys should be disabled

Waste of screen space, that's what the keys under the screen are for...

By mistake pressed thanks instead of reply... lol..
Yeah waste of screen but by changing DPI that is compensated and as far as I can see the home button provided by Samsung is too cheap quality.
Who knows we might need it.

I think it's not possible in 4.2.2 build. It was possible in 4.1.2 and possible in 4.4.x onwards.

Is there any hope?

Anyone can solve it for v4.2.2

disable method not works.....
i appreciate your struggle.....but disabling method of soft keys not works.... disabling is done simply removing the line which we have added in build.prop folder....so kindly check it and correct it in description......:good:

Does it work for custom ROM, like cyanogenmod?

[THEME] Black Modified Dock and Battery Icon

hi .. posting my first here at xda,, just wanted to share the theme i created by adding some of those modifications and themes from here at xda.. cannot recall the original authors but credits goes to them... if this post seems not good for them then please delete this respectable admins and moderators..
the theme is all black and have a modified clear dock, battery icon also modified..my rom is untouched... well don't know what to say but please see the pics for reference...
1. you need to have root access and a 3rd party launcher installed like adw or launcher pro just in case you mess touchwiz.
2. create a backup of your twframework-res.apk, framework-res.apk, and TouchWiz30Launcher.apk
3. replace them with the attached files. use adb or terminal emulator to do so...must set as SU and system is mount as RW.
just revert the steps to return your original files. i don't know how to create update.zip file, if anyone like to help then please post as you wish...
tested on JPK, JPC, JP6 and JPM.. i have not tested this to other firmwares.. please do at your own risk.. thanks...

how to apply the theme
some detailed steps for the newbies like me..
requirements:
1. root with busy box 1.17.x
2. terminal emulator [downloadable in the market free]
3. root explorer like astro
4. other launcher like ADW or Launcher Pro - [In case you mess the touchwiz]
5. download the 3 files on my post then save it at root folder of the SDCARD of your SGS
steps :
1. using root explorer.. create a backup of the following on your computer or external card
a. TouchWiz30Launcher.apk = location is system/app/
b. framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk = location is system/framework/
2. open your terminal emulator
3. type su then hit enter
4. type mount -o remount,rw / system then hit enter.
5. type cp -f sdcard/TouchWiz30Launcher.apk system/app then hit enter
6. type sync then hit enter
7. type reboot then hit enter
8. open your terminal emulator
9. type su then hit enter
10. type mount -o remount,rw / system then hit enter.
11. type cp -f sdcard/framework-res.apk system/framework then hit enter
12. type sync then hit enter
13. type reboot then hit enter
14. open your terminal emulator
15. type su then hit enter
16. type mount -o remount,rw / system then hit enter.
17. type cp -f sdcard/twframework-res.apk system/framework then hit enter
18. type sync then hit enter
19. type reboot then hit enter
separate each file and do sync and reboot to avoid problem such as terminal freezes then eventually system/framework will be corrupted, though you can fix it by reflashing, still best not to do reflash
done...
Is there any chance you can do a version without the tellytubby backs for the icons in the app drawer ?
i will check if that can be deleted.. love the idea
flanflinger...
i guess it is possible.. i need to test first.. i can change them to black to accompany the all black series like the dock background... wait... will use paint now and will try it first

updated TouchWiz30Launcher.apk
Spot on !
Oh this looks awesome, I just have 2 questions.
1. Will this work on JM1? (As I've seen a lot of themes for just JPM, JPK etc etc etc)
2. Which apk contains the edited top bar? Is it possible to just get the rest of the mod without the top bar editing? (I already have an edited one and I like it the way it is.)
Thanks,
Luke.
While at this step:
7. type cp -f sdcard/twframework-res.apk system/framework then hit enter
My phone froze, and I couldn't do anything for too long, so I turned it off and on by removing the battery, now whenever I try to boot it, it gets stuck on Galaxy S GT-I9000 screen...
Any idea how I should recover from all this?
Hi chickie.tobias i like your work.
I wanna know if u can make a framework-res.apk working on JM8 with stock samsung icon and battery icon version z stock gradient.
If u can do this i will appreciate your work. thanks
@chickie.tobias if i give you my framework-res.apk + twframework-res.apk, could you mod this for me? I really like your work bro!
[email protected],
I can try... really depends if you wanted the same look as this...
TawaNicolas,
i believe the only way is to reflash using odin....
lelf,
i can try, i just need your framework-res.apk and this file "battery icon version z stock gradient".

Many thanks bro. I dont need the battery icon mod but the notification bar (the black semi-transparent screen with wifi, bluetooth, gps, etc screen you modded). All i need is that (the dock bar would be a plus too). Ive included 3 files (framework-res.apk, twframework-res.apk, and touchwiz30launcher.apk), but from what i know (but not sure) is you only need twframwork-res.apk to change to semi-transparent black notification screen, as framework-res.apk changes battery icon (which i dont need). Thanks in advance bro... (btw, my eclair firmware is zsjg4)
Here we go, my apk are up. I don't need battery icon mod, in this apk is arledy modded.
Pls make all the same as in the screenshoot the icon bar too. Thx you!!!!!!!!
FW: JM8
hi,i really like your themes..i follow your step and after reach the second step it said something like my phone not enough space then it start force close when i enter main menu..i try factory reset and now my phone cannot start but i still can reflash it...but is there any other way to install your themes to my phone since i'm very newbie at this thing..btw i'm running on JP6 with root
thanks
arianto12,
make sure to sync and reboot after copying one file. do not copy all the files at the same time...
[email protected] and lelf,
i sorry cannot do your themes since I am using Froyo... seems like you guys are using Eclair... currently still trying to further check the composition of each icons to modify them...
no worries bro....was really hoping i could get my phone to look like yours.......
No problem mate, thanks you for your time. see for next update for the theme!!
I did sync and reboot when i copy the first file but when i wanna do the same for the second file it said cannot copy..any idea?

No that definetely shouldn't happen. You'll have to reflash your rom. I'm thinking of taking this down, it works for most, but some people are having problems..
Ya, its just stuck... if i go back to the program and hit the button again, it reboots and just loops again..

tried reflashing my rom, still boot looping.. going to have to factory reset.. its cool, happened to run titanium backup and Nova launcher backup yesterday... I know what "Use at your own risk" means... its all good. If you can sure this up, i'll try again.. Thanks

Takes long? more than 5five minutes?
Its not normal.... Do 4 wipes and recovery you Rom.
Do it manually.
Firs´t make sure u have all driver´s installed on your pc.
Gnex must be Rooted. Unlock is not needed.
Install Java Runtime Environment
Make sure you have LMT 0.96 or Button Savior installed otherwise you will be unable to navigate.
This is how you would edit your framework-res.apk yourself to hide Nav Bar:
Google: Donwload Apktool.
(Make sure apktool and framework-res.apk from your own ROM are in the same folder)
Extract apktool and open command line
1) Type: apktool if framework-res.apk in Command Prompt
2) Type: apktool d framework-res.apk in Command Prompt
3) Locate and edit bools.xml in folder location: framework-res/res/values/bools.xml
(Open with Notepad ++ and edit to "false" : "config_showNavigationBar">false)
4) Type: apktool b framework-res new.apk in Command Prompt
5) Open both original "framework-res.apk" and "new.apk" with WinRar/7Zip
6) Delete "resources.arsc" from "framework-res.apk" and replace it with the
"resources.arsc" from "new.apk"
7) Paste "framework-res.apk" into system/app using Root Explorer and reboot device. Should be ok! I if not, go to Root Explorer system/app find framework-res.apk go to permissions and change to rw-r-r-- Reboot and enjoy!
Cheers!

How you mean "not to touch" the screen after starting the script?
Should we wait until the patch loads in successfully, or you are trolling us with this script?
Maybe cuz that forces the lights to go on, wich you are disabling and so crashes..? Just follow the instructions, dont be a badass and touch oit

Cause if the lights are on when the permissions are applied by my script, the stay on FOREVER until reboot. Read point number 4 in first post.No trolling here, its legit you can touch the screen, its just the script won't work how you want it.

Thanks to AlwaysDroid and galaxy888 idea, I have made a quick and dirty app to disable the touch light keys on the fly; next up, a service to set the backlight on boot, and maybe conditional behaviour (like disable key light only if specific app is running).
To enable the light, after unchecking the box, you must perform one backlight cycle (lock/unlock the screen).
It needs root, but no other permissions are required.
PS. I haven't bothered yet to change the checkbox state based on setting, so after reboot even if it's checked, lights are still on; just uncheck-check it again. Don't be too judgemental about it, I just put this together in like 5 mins
Great

Does the app change the value back to 1 or mess up the permissions for the file that controls backlight, the app might work on a sensation but it's default value is 255
Sent from my GT-S5660
What the application does is, when disabling the lights, write a 0 into the file and denies any access by removing all permissions, and, when enabling them back, writes a 1 and change permissions back to default value (in Gio case, 644). I know this is kinda hackish, but my programming and Android kernel knowledge is limited...
If you'd like to try it on Sensation, I can modify it... I just need to know the file's exact path and default permissions. But first, to be sure, you can try to change by hand, to see if this hack does work on Sensation.

Well, it seems that the Sensation has different hardware capacities for the keys light (dimming), whereas Gio has only two states (on/off). So my guess is that this "hack" won't work on Sensation, even done manually...
New update out. No more not touching the screen. It actually replaces the value in the file. Enjoy

@Silvermatrix The KK launcher wont support these icons you have to install moonshine over apex/nova/smart etc. launchers to have it working. The best solution is to have root access and install CM11 and try out its themes. Hit thanks if i helped
