720p display can play 1080p video smoothly? - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Well,as a proud ion user here,I wanna ask some question
Ion have 720p display which if play 720p video,it will fit perfectly on screen...well,I've been downloading 720p anime and it runs perfectly without errors...
What I am confused is : Is ion support 1080p video playback with its hardware?
I mean, even if the screen resolution isn't 1080p and oversize the 1080p video,I still can make it fit on my screen using MX Player...
Just the total question : Does it support 1080p video?
Sent from my SK17i using xda premium

the physical pixel dimensions of the Ion's screen is ~1280 x 720 (not sure if its exactly that, but its close)
the phone's hardware, though, is capable of outputting 1080p video...the 1080p stuff is for outputting to a HDTV via HDMI.
if you play a native 1080p video in MX player, what happens depends on your scale settings in the player. If its full screen, you set the scaling to 'fit to screen' or whatever its called...and its actually 720p...if you set to full scale, it'll play it in 1080p, but it will be zoomed in...even at 100%, as all the pixels can't fit on the 720p screen.
I'm pretty sure the stock player doesn't give you the options of full scale...it'll just fit it to the screen regardless...but MX player does let you 'see it' in 1080p, it just won't all fit...i had to mess with this because all my top gear episodes are in 1080p...

Thanks for replying, well now you confirmed it that ion can play 1080p video...well does it have any problem with it?
Sent from my LT28h using xda premium

I push 1080p episodes of Top Gear via HDMI pretty regularly, and it works great. I can't comment on sound though, as i don't have HDMI running from my TV to my receiver...so its just TV speakers, but it works and everything...
I can't remember what type those files are, i wanna say they are .mkv ...but not positive...i just know its something my PS3 won't decode, so i have to use the phone...nearly any other video file i've used the PS3 plays fine, so i don't have to use the phone...
I will say though...MX player hated these types of files for the first few minutes...it only did it the first time i ever played one...it would get out of sync and stutter a lot...but after about 5 minutes it smoothed out and i never had an issue since...not sure if that is cache related or something, just saying though...don't give up if its a little wonky at first, it'll probably smooth out fine...

Play HD Videos on X1i ????

hello need a player who can play hd videos ( coreplayer, tmcpm, windows media, divix mobile etc ) dont work what can i do ? i cant play avis or some other videos on the x1 rom is toutchit v11 leo german please help me!
Let me Google that for you.
X1's hardware can barely play SD videos with acceptable quality/frame rate, let alone HD...
Another thing - the screen is 800x480 and it is not capable for any of the HD resolutions (720p/1080i/p). There are not enough pixels to display HD content. DVD (NTSC) video resolution is 720x480 and that's eventually the best you can get as a resolution off X1.
X1's hardware is capable (of SD), just use the normal WinMo Media Player instead of others which cannot make use of hardware accel.
Use the tool provided by XDA to convert your movies to mp4. Those can be played in high res 800 X 480 with wmp or the media xperience panel.

...i played video with more pixels than screen have...it was about (854*480) in .flv format, played in CorePlayer...i have few videos of that size, some of them plays fine, some of them are played in low frame rate(few per second only)...so its depends on hardware speed, not screen resolution...
armin van buuren-love you more.flv, is 864*480,and it plays very good...video is downloaded from youtube via savevid.com
I've posted links, so you can see...
I use mp4 format and this is this same what HD quality

HDMI with browser videos?

Just ordered my HDMI cable and wanted to know is it possible to watch movies from the internet on my TV. Like hulu or megavideo? Idk if there r any hacks or custom rims I'm new sorry. And thanks
Anyone have an answer? Please
Works fine for me. Youtube and other movie sites that I frequent play through hdmi to my hdtv.
The image displayed on your tv will be the size that would he displayed on your evo so don't expect any kind of fullscreen display. The evo acts as the movie controls when using the hdmi video out.
Looks great on my 55 and 60, don't know jow it would look on something smaller.
Thanks. But your saying that its only gonna be like 5 in on the screen? Bc that's how big it would be on the evo..? Kinda confused

Yes that's exactly what I am saying. The screen resolution that would be displayed on the evo is what would be displayed on your tv. Slighty bigger of course on the tv but not fullscreen.

What ROM are you using that allows this functionality!??!
I believe Youtube should work, and so should any video that's played through the system's media player, but not the hulu app (The hulu app is just a tweaked browser). HDMI out doesn't show what's on your Evo's screen, it shows what's either playing through the built in system player (so RockPlayer, etc. doesn't show) or what the default slideshow app is showing.
Also, don't see why you can't fill your screen with the video. On all of my TVs, I can generally stretch out my videos to the extent of the screen's edges at about 720p.

I think you're confusing yourself. I never said the evo screen is displayed. The op asked about video being displayed through hdmi and I said it works fine for me.
As for not being fullscreen, the image passed from the evo through hdmi gets pixelated as it is. Do you really want to stretch that? I pass my hdmi cable through my denon receiver which does not upconvert hdmi signals....only analog. Even at that, stretching through my receiver or tv distorts the already pixelated image. But hey, if you want to stretch your images thats on you.

The Evo's screen resolution doesn't determine the resolution of the video being sent out through HDMI. That's determined by the resolution of the video file or stream itself. For instance, I play a lot of 720p videos from vimeo.com, and they appear to stream through the Evo and out the HDMI as their full 720p. And I'm 100% sure that 720p video files playing directly from the Evo go out as 720p through HDMI. I do that all the time and it looks great. Of course, a lot of stuff on youtube and other sites aren't very high resolution, or you may be served lower resolution versions since you're on a mobile platform. Those would look like crap if they were stretched to full screen on a big TV. But my point is, it's the video site, not the Evo or its screen size that determines it.

meaning the resolution of the video file on the evo screen when watching browser videos (such as youtube, vimeo, etc) would be displayed. I said don't expect fullscreen which pertained to MOST video sites (youtube as an example) that do not stream full 720p video all the time. If you are watching a true 720p file on the evo and output it through hdmi of course it will be fullscreen 720p. When watching youtube videos and you watch the sd versions it won't be fullscreen.
The op never asked about 720p videos in the first place only simply hdmi and browser videos. Like I said, most browser videos are not in full 720p. And if you have to stretch a file to fit a 720p screen it's not a native 720p.
I was answering the op staying within the bounds of his question but everyone else had to take it beyond what he asked. No where in the op's title or first post did he mention anything about 720p output through hdmi. The question was simply enough if hdmi worked for browser videos.

It's no big deal. People often say one thing when they mean another. I was just clarifying it so nobody else was inadvertently misinformed.

Understandable, which is why I stayed within the bounds of the ops question. While what I said was not misinformation, I probably could have worded it better. Either way, I do believe I made the points that pertained to the op's question clear.

The simple answer is it should since it would most likely play through the stock media player.
I use a modified stock rom and kings kernel so ymmv depending on the way you have your system setup. But if you are on a stock rom and a kernel that supports hdmi out you should be fine. I am work now so can't test megavideo but youtube, vimeo, etc. all play fine for me through hdmi.

[Q] Whats the best resolution to convert a video to for the Galaxy Note 2?

I watch a lot of movies on my phone, no matter which one it is.. I had a iPhone 4, with at least 10 movies... My Galaxy Note had about 6 movies.. Now, I'm about to put a few movies on my Galaxy Note 2 as well..
Just wanted to know what resolution I should convert the video to so that the video size is not too big, and it uses almost the whole screen...
I looked up Wikipedia, and found out the screen resolution is 1280×720.. I use Xilisoft to convert movies, so I'll try this resolution out to see how the videos come out..
Does anyone have any presets they use while converting videos for their Note 2?
I'll post how the quality comes out.
I always use 720x1280 and it looks perfect like an hdtv

what program do you guys use to convert video for the Anroid system.
And with the Note 2.. the box has DIVX written on the side.. so does it need to be transcoded to something special for it to play or does mp4(i think it is) work fine?

I put a blu ray rip of T3 on my Note2. Used mediacoder. Kept video and audio format (1920x1080) but changed to a mp4. Looks really great no stuttering. Only thing was file size 7gb. had to split to fit on sd card.

Since the note 2 screen is 720p I code my movies at 720p too. Mp4 at 2500kbps is fine for 2.35:1 movies. For 16:9 movies you might want to increase the bit rate a little higher. Audio: ac3, or aac at 192 kbps. I really wish note 2 can support dts audio!
Btw isn't it painful to watch movies on the tiny iphone screen?

haha. true.
i have huge hands (not to mention my height, 6 feet 2 inches).. i had been using the Note since April, before switching to the Note 2 earlier this week, and the transition was very smooth..
before the Note, I used (any guesses?) an iPhone 4 32 GB for 2 years..
now, I cant even possibly think of going to a smaller screen, let along an iPhone..
my brother has a Galaxy S3, and I feel even thats puny in my hands (even though the difference between a Note 2 and a S3 is smaller than a Note 2 and an iPhone 4/5)...

720x1280? Isint that something you would do if the video was horizontal?
i converted 6 movies with the following settings on Xilisoft Video Converter, and they are brilliant..
keep in mind i do not use the default video player.. i use MX Player ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&hl=en ) to watch my videos.. i also use it to watch streaming videos..
i use this because it not only gives me the option to resize videos to fit screen size, but also swiping back and forth on the screen allows me to fast forward and rewind by seconds of my liking, giving me more control..
make sure if you install this, you also install all the free codec types available..
it not only plays formats playable by the Note 2 by default, it plays a host of other formats such as .mkv (if you really really want pretty good quality, and dont care about the size of the video)..
anyways, here are the settings i used on the Xilisoft Video Converter to convert videos for my Note 2 -
Profile - Andriod - Android (320x240) - H.264 Video (you can choose a higher resolution, this gives you a smaller size.. eg. 854x480)
These settings are available on the right panel
Video Size - 1280x720 (videos will be converted to the highest resolution the Note 2 supports)
Video Quality - Normal (you can push it up to High if you want, increasing the size... but if you are already converting a video from a good quality, then there is no need to chance this)
Audio Quality - High (here, i'm willing to accept a size increase by ~100 mb, but normally it wont be that much.. no fun watching a movie with crappy sound quality)...
Going to advanced settings
Zoom - Full (keep aspect ration)
Aspect Ratio - 16:9
Volume - 100% (bump if you your video is not loud enough... may distort the clarity a bit, obviously)..
and there you have it..
Xilisoft
Hello Tutusinghsohi
I am using Xilisoft as well.
They have a preset for Note2 but the bitrate is 4000. So final file is super large. It takes like 5 hours to convert. And if I lower the bitrate, the video will NOT play on the phone.
Please tell me, what bitrate do you use?
Any tips?
Thanks
Julien
I use MeGUI. It's completely free. It took some configuring, but I can convert targeting a specific filesize. I find 2GB is a good target filesize for average length movie with good video quality.

I'm using xilisoft and has a preset already for galaxy note 2. I'm just surprised at the conversion. the movie was 700mb and end conversion became 3gb. it's a bit high for a mobile video IMHO
Transcoding? Ick.
I just throw the mkvs I download straight onto my SD card and play them with no issues. 720p or 1080p.
I've also been using AllShare to throw them up on my 55" Samsung HDTV since my HTPC has been down, works great.
just use VLC media player... if you open the file menu theres an option to convert media files in there. And its free and not spyware like most of those converters around on the internet.

[Q] 720p60 videos on Xperia S?

Hi guys,
I'm not sure, but I think this is my first post in here after a long time registered... But anyway, I tried to convert some 1080p24 music videos (not from YouTube, but instead some masters (per say) from Vimeo "Original file" download option) to 720p60 using AviSynth and SmoothVideo Project (SVP) for frame interpolation. In addition, I also tried to deinterlace some 1080i TV footage to 1080p60 and convert them to 720p60. I encoded both videos using MainConcept Reference with 6000 kbps of H264 video bitrate and 192 kbps of AAC audio bitrate. Both videos play smoothly on my PC at 720p and 59.94 fps, but on my Xperia S phone they're kinda jerky. Well, not exactly jerky, but they look like they're not over 30 fps. So, finally, my question: what is exactly the problem? Is the 720p60 video too heavy on frame-rate? Or is the phone screen's refresh rate below 60 Hz? Or maybe the encoding settings are too complex? (I used the slowest preset on MainConcept Reference) So far, I've ruled out two things:
1. Resolution: I can play 1080p Apple trailers in 16:9 format smoothly (although they're obviously in 720p because of the phone's screen resolution).
2. Bitrate: The problem is definitely not the bitrate because the Apple trailer for Avengers in 1080p is somewhere around 9000 kbps.
P.S.: I'm using Android 4.1.2 JellyBean 6.2.B.0.211 stock ROM. I've had some issues with video playback on older Jelly Bean releases (6.2.B.0.200), but they seem to be gone in this version. Using MX Player, latest version.

Nothing is too heavy for SONY XPERIA S. Like others in here you are trying to much to push the limits of your phone with all kinds of weird tweaks. Well, by doing so, here you are, posting a question about a phone that works fine, if you know how to use it.

Err... ok, but if you're saying that "nothing is too heavy" for it, then there shouldn't be any limits to push, right? I know this phone has some limitations (like all the phones do), I just want to know what exactly is limiting it. I don't understand what is so wrong about trying to use all the capabilities of the phone. If the phone has a 720p screen, why shouldn't I be putting HD videos in it? I wouldn't spend so much on it if I'm not planning to use it. If it's just to listen to music and take 12 MP pictures, I would buy a much cheaper phone and a camera.
You are pushing non-compatible and Science-Fiction apps and mods, that's why.

Oh, and I've already tried to play the original 1080p files, but they're like 30 or 40 Mbps, so it starts to lag. The 6 Mbps master for Eminem's "No Love" plays fine in 1080p, though.

Those who have a Note 3: can anyone report back on how MKV files with 10-bit profile/hi10p play back using MXplayer (Using HW+ or whatever codec works best) or whatever video app you prefer to use?
Sample files in both 720p and 1080p resolution are here: koi-sama.net/files/hi10/
This was one of the first things I tried, to see whether or not it could handle my bluray quality anime. Guess what, IT DOES! Both MXplayer and even the stock player handle hi10p mkv bluray flac 1080p videos with ease. Also subtitles work great in both, but are substantially better in mxplayer which does some effects for the subtitles and can do more than one line at a time.

Samsung should give you some commission because you just sold me on the phone! <3
Thanks and thanks!
Can you try out Dice player to see if that app works also?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.a
Use the provided codec with it please. The codec has to be in the internal sdcard & link it in Dice settings
TYVM
Here's the codec since I'm unable to edit my previous post

It worked both without and with the codec. Subtitles worked better than the stock player, as it showed multiple lines at once during openings with karaoke lyrics, though both lines were on top of each other, instead of one being on the bottom and one being on the top like mxplayer had it. There are possibly settings to play with subtitles and such, but either way it seems that the phone is playing videos like a boss.
For testing I was using these videos: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=236223
I'm about to test http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=446022
and one of the most subtitle intensive videos I know, the first episode of this http://colormesubbed.com/the-world-god-only-knows-ii-bd-vol-1
I'll update this post when I am done testing.
Update:
Alright. The stock video player failed to play both of those, and only played the audio and basic subtitles. MXplayer and Dice player both played the World God only knows video perfectly, but with only MXplayer perfectly applying all of the subtitle effects(which is pretty impressive). They both needed S/W rendering to play it however. They could only play Garden of Words with S/W rendering as well, though it did lag and stutter. The video for Garden of Worlds is honestly a nightmare with even most laptops being unable to play it, though I do expect that the Note 3 will eventually be able to play it with better optimizations from the video player apps in the future. Even though the world god only knows video was the same codec, it was at half the bitrate and had 2-channel sound instead of 6-channel. Like I said, that video is an overboard example. The phone literally plays every other video in my collection.

Thanks for the report, hi10 compatibility is a major point for me too!
So, all videos play fine, even 1080p hi10 subbed, except some pretty heavy ones, like Garden of Words..
Maybe this was due to the bigger size (a movie and not episodes) and the sourround sound?
Just figured I'd post a more technical answer for people here who are wondering. The Note 3 does not appear to support hardware acceleration for High [email protected], or for most people who watch anime know it as, 10-bit. Now that doesn't mean it won't play it, but you aren't going to get 100% smooth video with it when video higher bittrate or 1080P video.
Just so you know I've pretty much watched every new anime that came out this season on my Note 3 (20+ shows) and not a single one had issues. At most I've only had one or two instances of stuttering which was attributed to other tasks in the background doing stuff, since it still is a phone. The Note 3 definitely is a beast and probably the best phone you could get for watching Anime. Heck, there's times where I'll sit on my bed watching an episode because it looks better than my computer screen.
But regardless, just know it doesn't really support it. This means that the H/W and H/W+ modes in MXPlayer (or any player you can get from and Android store) don't work on the video and it'll force you to use S/W mode (you can tell by the S/W mark on the top right of the video when you open the seek menu within MXPlayer)
So what does this mean exactly? Well even in S/W mode the phone has enough power to force its way through rendering anything as long as it's not too demanding. Several of the shows that came out this season are encoded 10-bit by quite a few groups and I have had no issues. The biggest one I've watched without issues is [UTW-Mazui]_Toaru_Kagaku_no_Railgun_S_-_24_[720p][1E0D545F] which comes in at about 800mb for the episode and definitely has one of the highest bittrates you'll see for currently aired Anime. Though do note the video is High [email protected] so it's not the newest format profile but it still forces the phone to use S/W mode. However the video plays perfectly fine with no stuttering or lag issues.
But once you go beyond that the phone's power just isn't enough to make up for the lack of hardware support. Playing [Coalgirls]_Sword_Art_Online_02_(1920x1080_Blu-ray_FLAC)_[483024FB] shows noticeable lag and is practically unwatchable. I would say I get around 10-15FPS, but that's really only an estimate. My guess is most 1080P 10-bit videos you'll watch with software mode will be unwatchable, however 720P 10-bit videos seem to be fine. I've thrown everything I can find at it and anything 720P 10-bit works perfecly. But do note that if the video is not 10-bit then you should have no problem at all watching it. I've watched [Coalgirls]_Infinite_Stratos_01_(1920x1080_Blu-Ray_FLAC)_[A9B39255] without any issues, and in fact completed that entire series on my phone without a single issue, however the phone does play back the video in H/W+ mode because it's not 10-bit.
I hope this helps someone decide on this phone. It is honestly the best phone I've ever owned and finally lets me watch all the Anime I want. While I wish it would watch every video I have as I have a lot of newer 1080P 10-bit stuff it still gets the job done better than any other phone I've tested. And my god lets not forget to mention the screen which is absolutely perfect for Anime viewing. The size makes the viewing a pleasure and the extra color options really make it perfect. Though there are settings to get the color accuracy down to normal if it is too colorful for your taste.
P.S. I also have a paid Chrunchyroll account and have had no issues watching anything there.

I just want to make sure that no one buys the phone thinking this is true. MXPlayer will play 10-bit anime in S/W mode and the built in video player will say "unsupported video codec" While not ill intent was involved my guess is that wiimonkey9 probably tried 1080P MKV blu-rays that weren't 10-bit encoded. Read my post above if you want more information but I figured I'd quote this in case anyone does a Google search to get here like I did and immediately read his response.

Is this for a particular type of anime. or just Anime in general?
Is this for specific MKV files running bluray (fullHD) rips?

This isn't specifically only related to Anime or MKV files, it's more specifically related to the h.264 standard. You can read a brief description of it here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Hi10P and a more indepth description here: http://x264.nl/x264/10bit_01-ateme_pierre_larbier_422_10-bit.pdf
While it can be used for any videos, it's primarily used for Anime as it can provide better video at the same bittrate. It fixes a lot of problems that come with animation being encoded such as banding. It can be used for regular content but the benefit for non-animation medium is not enough to justify the increase in processing power and lack of hardware support to get people to switch.
