[Q] WiFi Tether enable or working app? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey all,
Does anyone have a wifi tethering app suggestion? or specific settings to set on a particular app to get wifi tethering working?
I'm rooted using MotoChopper. I tried WiFi Tether for Root Users and I can get the app to start just fine but my the network doesn't appear to be broadcasting as I can't see it on any other devices.
I can't use the built in hotspot feature because it's not enabled on my plan.
I understand it's early in the development stages for the SGS4 but just seeing if anyone has a workaround for the time being.
Thanks,
n64kps

Some strings need to be edited in the framework to change where the traffic get directed to so T-Mobile doesn't see you are tethering. Then you will be able to use the native app/toggle.

any simple app suggestion?

Do you need "wifi" tethering?
If not, PDAnet for me via bluetooth and usb.

does it provide free tethering? or are you on a tethering data plan?

Is it possible to redirect all tethered traffic through a VPN and therefore circumvent t-mobiles tether detection?
E.g. set up an SSH tunnel with port forwarding on the phone and then set your phone as a proxy server on your PC?
Or, if t-mobile only uses user-agent detection, can you simply use a VPN directly from your PC? As all traffic is then encrypted, t-mobile should no longer be able to identify its origin.

im on my unlimited plan, and the free version is limited to a small bandwidth limit. 8 bucks for the full version and no additional fees.

[Q] WiFi Tether for Root Users

Anyone confirm that WiFi Tether for Root Users works on our handset (or any recommendations for Wi-Fi router) or will T-Mobile still block it?
Would prepaid make a difference? I only plan to use it on rare occasions but so far I'm not using anywhere near my 5GB of 4G unlimited data as I generally have access to fast fiber Wi-Fi..
- Thnx

I am currently on the T-Mobile unlimited data plan (no paid hotspot add on is even available) and after quite a bit of messing around with my phone this is how I was able to get wifi hotspot working.
1.) Root your phone - http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-samsung-galaxy-note-ii-xda-developer-tv/
2.) Freeze tethering provision using Titanium Backup Pro (available in Play Store)
3.) Download TrevE’s modded wifi tether app for root users http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35476525
4.) Download Hotspot Shield VPN from Play Store
*When tethering to my Asus Transformer, all I need to do is activate the hotspot and it works flawlessly. If you want to tether to your laptop or Xbox 360, you need to active the VPN first, then start the hotspot (if you do not start the VPN first you will be brought to the dreaded T-Mobile upsell page on your PC and your Xbox 360 will not be able to download anything or connect to Xbox Live). The VPN stops T-Mobile from packet sniffing, which is what causes the upsell page to being with.
Thanks JB910, I will try those steps when I get a chance but was planning this easier wireless root method instead since my handset still has the pre T889UVALL4 OTA update Exynos exploit. Also just out of curiosity yesterday I tried Hotspot Shield VPN to run alongside FoxFi which did not work as it still brought the T-Mobile page but I did run a where's my IP & it was a South Korean IP, everyone trusts Hotspot Shield VPN when it's needed (nice to read not in all use cases but still many or most cases)?
I would likely only use it rarely as a backup on PCs-tablets but am now more motivated to root if this proves workable.. - Thnx

haha omg thanks so much I've been trying to figure all that out for myself
So with the help from you I was able to get it working as follows:
1) I rooted according to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37188698&postcount=28
2) Installed WifiTether-TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012_driverReload2 (defaults to Wifi Driver Reload 2) - http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390208427046731813 with settings changes as outlined at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35476525 & attached thumbnails at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37109011&postcount=7 . . Once I checked the boxes next to connected authorized clients as shown in last thumbnail (after putting in Wi-Fi passwords on devices) I was able to connect 5 handy devices simultaneously (Cr-48 Chromebook, Windows Notebook, EVO 4G, someone's iPhone & iPad). Interestingly I was able to browse websites on the two notebooks running full speedtests & checking sites for about 10-20 min non-continuously before getting the http://offers.t-mobile.com/tethering/upsell.do?source=redirect which I don't think I can even add to my prepaid plan. At this point I had to run Hotspot Shield VPN to continue browsing with the notebooks at 10% speeds (mobile devices like EVO 4G & iOS devices did not need Hotspot Shield VPN to continue so could I try to changing desktop client settings in Chrome or Firefox to avoid use of Hotspot Shield VPN?? that http://whatismyipaddress.com identified this time as ISP: nLayer Communications Organization: GIGLINX Services: Suspected Network Sharing Device City: Torrance Region:California rather than South Korea when first tested Hotspot Shield VPN or T-Mobile USA when off).
Again I don't plan on abusing this rather using it as a backup on occasion as I usually have access to fast fiber Wi-Fi. Will T-Mobile further make this an issue assuming I don't abuse this on my prepaid account? -Thnx

Ok, so before I got the dreaded message telling me that tmobile knew i was tethering and made me pay for a new play that included tethering.
Are you guys saying that being rooted, I can change my plan to the unlimited, and even though tethering is not allowed, I can still do it and never worry about going over my 5gb and being throttled?

If you run through a vpn they can't. It encrypts your data so they can't packet sniff.

tethering with native app

I have the T-mobile unlimited data plan with 500mb smartphone hotspot. I understand I can utilize my unlimited data with a VPN(which i have) and tethering. However, can i use the native tethering app w/ VPN beyond the 500mb smartphone hotspot?

this sounds like a good idea inside the vpn tunnel the data could potentially be shielded - but in all the other models there is a system application that detected and prevented or tracked wifi usage and attributed it to hotspot/tethering usage.

Even if you were using another tethering app such as FoxFi or Trevmod?
Most of the google market apps utilize the native tethering under the hood - and dont support Jellybean on the s2/s3 - its always possible but i doubt it.
Trev Mod might work, but i think it needs root access to do so. - This is the one bit that will hold me back from using it as the primary phone too.

When I ran foxfi on my gs3 it basically used the native program for wifi. so thats no good.
But if you dont feel like doing any mods, just use PDANet/Foxfi and do USB tether for laptops/computers and Bluetooth vpn for all others like tables other phones etc.
Thats what I have been doing and no issues, I dont have a tether plan.

[Q] Tmobile Galaxy S4 Mobile Hotspot

Sup Guys, so I recently I rooted my phone thinking that I could find a fully working way that would let me get free wifi hotspot from tmobile. I have the 4G Nation Unlimited data plan which is supposed to give me 2.5 GB of Hotspot but it doesn't. So I called and asked tmobile and they said I can't this service cause I have "Grandfather Plan" so I have to upgrade my plan, which I'm not willing to do.
Anyways, does anyone know a hack that would let me bypass the wifi hotspot plan verification thing?

You'll need to use the Root method for enabling hotspot or download a custom ROM with native hotspot enabled. And only the free VPNs slow your speed. If you pay for a VPN then its not slowed (usually costs around 3 bucks a month for the VPN) A vpn will be the only way to get the itouch working as i don't think you are able to change the User Agent of the Safari browser on the itouch.
And Google will give you more and faster answers then waiting for a reply on here if you don't know what a VPN or User Agent is

User agent checking is done on the T-Mobile's servers when they receive the data. Its impossible to stop that without a VPN. So you would still need the VPN to bypass that.

Just download "Wi-Fi tether router" it's $2 in the play store. It's the only working app that does hotspot through data rather than the hotspot plan. Or use a custom rom with a hacked hotspot built in.

Verizon Wireless hotspot app

On my Note 5 there was an app in the Verizon folder that was a wireless hotspot app.
I kept it on my home screen because I used it quite a bit.
It is gone from the folder now, and I do not see it in the play store.
Anyone know a way I can get the APK from another phone ?
The app is gone. The functionality is now baked into the OS.
Go into your settings. There should be an option for Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. You can set it up from there. There is also a toggle in the notification pull down to turn on and off.
Yea I saw that. I tried to install the apk I got from a couple of other phones but they were only updates. Is there a way to roll back all the updates so I can get the original apk?
Could I get the apk from someone who has a fresh install of an OS and not updated it yet??
Not gonna work man. Your on marshmallow
Quick settings in the pulldown bar has a hotspot toggle, works perfectly for ONE TOUCH hotspot on/off. If I sound excited it's because I used to be on AT&T and they oddly neutered their phones and took the hotspot toggle out of quick settings, and I couldn't find a hotspot toggle app which worked, I tried dozens of them. You had to actually go into settings, then into mobile hotspot, then click the hotspot, then toggle the on button, then click past the wifi will be turned off nag screen, then exit out of settings. So having one click toggle for hotspot is pretty awesome.
Could anyone confirm that this works regardless of the "Mobile Hotspot" feature code on your account? I'm thinking of buying the Note 7, and might avoid rooting it (at least for now) so I can keep Samsung Pay, but I need tethering to work...
I have an former-Alltel plan w/ unlimited data, which never worked with the baked-in "Mobile Hotspot" on my Samsung Note 3 without root+Xposed+XTether. (XTether caused the hotspot feature to avoid the "entitlement check" that usually occurred).

Do you guys not get a weird warning once FoxFi is installed?
After reading this thread I downloaded Foxfi, since hotspot is the only reason I've rooted my phones for years.
The app worked great, and I was able to use my PDANet serial number from 2010 (for my Windows Mobile Moto Q) so I didn't have to pay for it!

Yes, that's because FoxFi has to trick the system to turn on Tethering even if you don't have it in your plan.

I found out it was actually do to a user certificate it installs for the VPN, you can either move it manually to the system location or use a program like this to moved it automatically https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nutomic.zertman&hl=en

OK thanks.
Foxfi and PDAnet work on devices that have no root, but I just haven't heard yet if they work on the Moto Z Play, as sometimes certain devices will not work. Example: HTC 10
You can tether via Bluetooth too. Maybe thats a work-around for being charged for wifi tethering?
