Pie seems great, but... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

A few of the roms have the ability for PIE which i assume is a PA thing. I am a currently using PAC and it has the ability for pie, And i see the amazingness of it but i just cant see how i can use it.... I swipe in from edges all the time on my phone for different things and pie will always get in the way of that... It has a "Trigger area" but i dont know what thats doing because its not changing anything... You should be able to move the trigger area to any section of the top, bottom, left, or right sides, like not the whole left, burt only a small section of it....
Also, shouldn't you be able to add additional apps to it? wouldn't that make it even more functional.
Who came up with this? is this a google thing? an OEM thing or did a Dev do this himself? It seems incredibly polished!

Pie can do all that, go into its settings and explore. Ull see it does only swipe in from a certain side and u can assign apps or whatever u want for it.

I guess i wasn't clear, I know that you can pick only one side, but i use swiping in from the side in other apps. On the launcher, i swipe to go from screen to screen, and anywhere I pull down notifications. In chrome, the verge, dolphin, astro I swipe in from the sides. And alot of times I swipe in from top or bottom where I'm scrolling, it just gets in the way alot...
Why I meant was, you should be able to use only a portion of the side or top, like just a little bit of the top or middle of the left side would activate it.

Oh okay got ya. Seems like that would be useful. Contact the dev and see if u can get him to implement it.

What is pie? Browser?
Edit: Ok, got it, Pie Control. Looks nice. I'll try, thanks.

The default trigger is usually the middle side and can be set for left and right not just one side. The trick is not to swipe right away. Just tap the middle of the edge of the screen and it will trigger pie. Then u can swipe to your desired pie action. This way should not interfere with other swipe function. After a while you'll know how to trigger it quickly. I love this app on the note 2 as I do not need to deal with the capacitive buttons anymore or to reach all the way on top to drop the notification bar.

you can change the length and thickness of the activation area under pie settings. make it as small and thin as you like. for me it only activates from the very center of the very edge of my screen which leaves the majority of the rest of the side for swiping gestures

How do you change the length? I dont see any option to change the length. I can only change the thickness and location of the activation area whether its left, right or both. Mine is showing the whole length of the side of the screen as the activation area.

If you're rooted on any rom Google lmt launcher. Its on xda in the general apps section. This app had pie working way before PA did and has a ton of customization. Even gestures. One thing PA does better is notifications. Remember LMT

ICS 4.0 & All the Little Things! [undocumented features]

Just wondering for those of you who have the device already, have you guys found some neat features/tricks using 4.0 that haven't been documented or heavily advertised?
I would love to make a list of these features for other users to explore...
Lets get this started
List:
Reserved........
I know it's documented, but it was still a surprise to me - you can now finally delete apps straight from the app drawer, by dragging them just as if you were going to place them on the desktop, but then putting them in the recycle bin on the top.
No affiliation with apple. Or siri.

Nobody's talking about the search app. It's way better than the one in Gingerbread. Much easier to find stuff in your phone : music, app, sms, docs, etc. The old one was returning web search suggestion in 90% of the result... useless.
Search in browser let's you edit suggestion if you want to add something to it. But we lost popular web site suggestion
Just read it on Pocketnow but you can make folders in the favourites bar. Apologies if obvious.
When in the stock browser and you change orientation, tap the screen to make it rotate.

Rotate the phone to the right whilst in any stock app (so the speaker grill and front camera are on the right). Notice that the back, home and task switch buttons have moved to the top of the screen so that they stay on the right.
When using an ics app hold down on an icon in the action bar to get a description of what it does

This is known about, however you said undocumented and I haven't a single document for the Nexus/ICS apart from on one which came with the phone, telling me how to fix the battery.
Hold the volume down and power key, and you take a screen capture. Which is very handy on occasions

If you tap the volume button which makes the volume bar appear, you can then press the icon to the left of the volume bar and it toggles between ring and vibrate.

In settings/about phone. Tap repeatedly on the android version number (4.0...) then a little android appears. Keep ur finger on it and it grows into a screen animation.

[APP][LAUNCHER] TasKarou Launcher Overlay

Tired of moving your fingers up/down your tablet to switch applications? Try out TasKarou!
TasKarou is a multitasking launcher overlay.
Taking inspiration from the 'Quick Controls' feature in the android browser, TasKarou provides a multitasking layer on top of a launcher on tablets.
By swiping anywhere on the left or right edge of your tablet screen, you can activate TasKarou's UI.
It gives you access to a quick, smooth, and intuitive interface to facilitate app launch, transition, and management for the user
The user interface brings a more responsive, and enjoyable level of interaction to your tablet.
Notes:
To use TasKarou, set it as the default home launcher, and from TasKarou's settings, select the actual home launcher you want to overlay.
TasKarou user interface is then triggered by swiping from either the left of right edge of your tablet screen, while still allowing access to the overlaid home launcher through the home button.
The app is also available in the android market.

It's not possible to use both at the same time, since both controls rely on the user touching the edge of the screen.
If you have an idea on how I could get around that issue, I'm all ear.

some ideas from the top of my head:
- disable taskarou menu completely when in browser
- disable one side of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
- disable the upper/lower/middle half of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
on another note, the notification HAS to go. at least make it optional.
that being said, i really do like the concept of the app :good: i found myself regularly swiping in from the screen edges when not in browser, and then being disappointed that nothing happened.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have a few other ideas along with the ones you suggest that I will try to integrate, and test in the following days.
In the meantime, I updated TasKarou to also support android phones. I duplicated this thread in the 'Android Apps and Games' section to make it more visible: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984010

Definitely slick in some aspects. Can't say I really like it as it messes with my LMT set up and takes up more RAM on top of it.
There's a lot to be done like distinguishing different "hotspots" and designating right side only or left side only. Overall though I really enjoy the transitions and how the menu auto-switches based on which choices you're hovering over. Very intuitive choices too that I agree with about which things go where.
Looking forward to the potential this holds in the future. I may just abandon my LMT setup if done right.
Edit: And of course the ability for users to add/edit the options, potentially switch the color for mere superficial reasons. Something like my screenshot.

Maybe ask SwipePad's developer.
(I'm not being sarcastic)
Really useful. Love the idea, but it does cause a few conflicts with apps that rely on swiping from the sides of the screen. Having said that, when I set the margin to 13 pixels I can use the Dolphin browser (for example) without too many issues by not swiping from the outer edge, but by placing the finger a little more away from the edge and then swiping inwards. Other apps are less forgiving.
What about a button in the notification area, which is visible at all times anyways?
EDIT:
If swiping has the preference, then it would be more logical to align the available programs/tasks to the side from which was swiped. Swiping and selecting can be done with one hand then, regardless of which hand was used to swipe with.
The recents button is useless, I never use it, ever.
I'd like the option to use this instead and just disable the side activation altogether.
Nice idea. However on TF101 after getting the quick control moving the finger to one of the options too fast causes the quick controls to disappear. I have to move the thumb really slow in order to select any option. Hopefully, this will be fixed soon:fingers-crossed:.
ppl get over it, the man is trying to make ur life simpler, so if u don't like some stuff about the app then tell him your opinions in a decent way so he can make a proper development for the app instead of trashing it, otherwise f*** off
I like this!
1. I only see it from the right edge in portrait.
2. Might have a user selected area(s) for its swipe. This would allow those with conflicts to fix them. There is a similar app on Play which just gives a row running/recent apps icons which is not a bad interface. I found its use of the bottom obtrusive.
3. The home key does not go home in the base browser (I am using Trebuchet on a CM10).
4. There is a difference between "running" and "recent" (exited, cached, and still available.) !!
Long press of home gives a vertically tiled thumbnail view of both.
Taskarou shows only icons of running apps, not recent.
Taskarou should show both, either in two panes or in one with some distinction?, i.e. frame around one or the other. I sort of like having the thumbnails and they could be tiled or cascaded. If cascaded, should be focus-able, if tiled, scroll larger view like the app list. Best eliminated the number of apps option or make that for the pane (but that would be scroll-able for more). Cascading the main webOS motif. Flick down to kill?

First of all, as far as I can see, no one is trashing his app. So maybe lower your tone a bit and at least pretend to be able to communicate in a proper way.instead of telling people to "F-off".
The developer probably appreciates the feedback as he responds to it. Feedback (be it positive or negative) is valuable for both him and the app he works on. The end product can benefit from any kind of feedback as it points out flaws and strong points, and it can give the developer some different perspectives and experiences from different users and from different devices.
The day a developer stops listening to his/her targeted market is the day the product will begin its downfall.

Was having issues on my Nexus 7 running SmoothRom 4.1.2. Updated to 4.2 and no more disappearing quick controls as soon as my finger leaves the border. To get them to stay I had to leave my finger there for at least 1.5 seconds. Now all is well. Really liking it. I look forward to extended and customizable menus
Update:
Scratch that. Conflict was gesture control. Had it set to consume events in starting zone. So a touch on the edge first went to gesture control. Just an iD10t error.

Fastest way to open quick settings?

I'm not a fan at first, but I'm getting around it. Now that devs have been making stuff for it, I've been using it more more.
However, I hate the clumsy way to open it. So far, I've only known ADW Launcher and Nova having Expand Quick Settings as one of their launcher actions (No Apex, seriously. They're getting really late this time).
How do you guys expand it? Is there a widget, an app, or any gesture system I could use to play around with that?
If you are talking about the new quick settings in the notification pulldown bar you can bring them up by using a two finger swipe to pull the bar down instead of a one finger swipe. Two fingers brings up the quick settings options.
i just pull the status bar down and press the button

Agree. This is a design for tablets being squeezed inappropriately into phones. Pulling it down using thumb and index finger, while the other are stabilizing the phone is just ridiculous.

While I agree that the solution isn't perfect as is, you couldn't be more wrong. This is not a design for tablets being squeezed down to phones, as tablets get the PA approach mentioned earlier, where you swipe down on either side.
That also makes you wrong about PA, as that is stock, just the stock tablet experience.

AFAIK GMD gesture control supports this. Not quite sure. Just try the lite version first.

Few options are out there already.
GMD - You can set various swipes such as 45* up/left for back, up for home, etc, activated at the bottom.
App that I forget the name of but enables pie control in any app. You can set multiple layers as well as an inner and outer pie ring, but this can get a bit clustered. Realistically you can probably set all of your most used apps into the pie on various layers though and get rid of every shortcut.
Latest PA has a more feature rich but less customized pie. Battery bar, time, notifications, access notification panel, per-app color of pie, and more. However, unlike the app above you cannot add additional items into the pie, at least not yet.

LMT with PIE Control is IMHO the Name of the app. In the last version it includes also the swipe from the bottom like in Para...Rom (don't know the name of the rom right now). But it's not the same. A simple swipe from the bottom and it should show the orig. softkeys. That would be soooooo cool! I would never ever switch back and set the expanded desktop active
I have GMD installed and I was not able to hide only the soft keys.
The only option I found hides the soft keys AND the notification bar on the top of the phone, so valuable info like battery, signal strength etc are also hidden.
Any ideas to hide only the soft keys?

Exactly what I was looking for
But how stable is paranoid android compared to CM10
My main issue is I haven't found a good way of hiding the softkeys. GMD closes the whole SystemUI so lose the top bar and app switcher, and the Fullscreen Toggle that a lot of people use removes the in-app menu button which is not ideal as I don't really want to have a gesture just to access the basic menu.
Is there a good way of doing this that I've missed?

I'm running it from day 1 (got my N4 since half December) and it's perfectly stable. I always wait a little while before updating and follow the tread to be sure there are no great bugs. If everything's ok then I'll update to a newer version. The PIE option is really Beta so there will be some bugs.
I think u just must try it, paranoid android is really a original and renewing ROM. Not just because the pie, but also the hybrid, per app color and dpi option.
It's just as stable, if not more stable then cm10.1 The rom is based on AOSP so should be as stable as the original one.

I don't want to jump the post but I think since its in the same vein those playing with this sort of thing might want to give Swipepad a spin around the block. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.conduction.swipepad.android You have to buy into a number of different add on apps to get full functionality and I think the buy in is too steep for what you get but if the stock functions work for you it can be a nice add. Right now I have it set up as a grid of work contacts and it functions well in that use.
Edit... Ok, fiddled with the app, totally dig it. If the guy keeps going with it he has a winner.
It just needs more functionality otherwise it is the best i could have found. Thanks to the app developer
Great find, been looking for something similar to when I had my note edge. Started to live by the edge... This brings me that much close to it. Wish we could get/extract a working apk from the note edge. I tried to take the sidepanel.apk but I didn't take... Any thoughts?
Perfect app for the edge....just have to block notifications for it to get rid of the constant stat bar icon. Thanks for the find!

This app is so great. It really cleaned up my home screen. No more need for a favorite apps folder!
How do you get the actions such as notifications or home button working. There greyed out for me.

I like this app a lot and I would pay for it.
Du you now any possibility to disable the dock and to use the full screen like on the Note Edge? May be there is the option to get and install the launcher from the Note Edge

Go into your application manager in settings. Then choose this app and uncheck notifications.
Hold down tap on notification and select 'i' and then disable notifications for program.
