USB OTG Cable? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Firstly, is it worth getting a USB OTG cable? What can you use it for? Do you have one?
Second, which one should I get for the Galaxy Nexus? I've seen these two:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Con...=1365625468&sr=1-2&keywords=samsung+otg+cable
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Micro-Cable...qid=1365625284&sr=1-23&keywords=usb+otg+cable
Which is better? Is there any difference? Appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Python.

First you have to get the app called Stick Mount if you want to use usb flash drives. But the OTG cable can be used for a lot of things, keyboard, mice,
usb flash drives. I've seen a youtube video where the guy uses a hub and uses all 3.

It's also my understanding that you can also flash leaked ota's from stock recovery with an otg cable.

I was going to get the Nexus Media Importer. But, which cable should I get?

I have a generic usb OTG.
I have successfully used a mouse, usb flash drive, keyboard.
The only thing I couldn't use was my CDMA internet stick.
If that would have worked then it would have really been awesome!

I would say just go for the generic or regular OTG cable.

Also, would this work with the Galaxy Nexus: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cablesson-MicroUSB-HDMI-Female-Adapter/dp/B007K8NNOA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

How much can you do using USB OTG with an unrooted Galaxy Nexus? Most importantly, can you use a memory card reader to copy files from the memory card to the phone or use it to upload the files to Dropbox?
I'm asking on behalf of my sister. I don't have access to her phone so I can't simply try it out. I know USB OTG works great on my rooted Galaxy SIII but I've never had a Nexus device.

As of 4.2 there is native support for USB OTG on the Galaxy Nexus so you don't need any third party app. You can use it without root USB device is mounted as /usbdisk. Try X-plore from the Play Store which shows a separate drive for the USB device you have connected.

I have tried on my unrooted Galaxy Nexus 4.2.2. with stock ROM, with an original Samsung OTG cable, but nothing happens.
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

See if there's an option in settings>storage as Mount USB storage, if not there use an app such as stick mount or USB OTG helper. Even for using those apps the phone should recognize when a storage device is connected, the pen drive/card reader should light up.
If option is there and still not mounting then any of your devices may be improper check your OTG cable with other phones, your pen drive/card reader.
Clean the contacts of cable and your USB device. Best way to confirm working is to boot to recovery and connect, USB storage is always mounted in recovery mode.

Any decent file explorer should also be able to see mounted storage, especially given 4.2. You may have to browse to root and poke around until you find the appropriate /mnt folder, but set a bookmark (your explorer supports bookmarks, right?) and that should be all she wrote. StickMount is also great for me.
OTG has been really helpful for playing media off of the occasional flash drive, and while using a mouse isn't all too helpful, playing with a full keyboard can make for a surprisingly good experience.

Here is an article that gives more info on it...
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...behind-galaxy-nexus-lack-of-usb-mass-storage/
USN Mass storage no, but USB Host yes ???
I'm utterly confused. If you look at
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/mg14z/whoa_whoa_ics_doesnt_support_usb_mass_storage/
it seems that GN can't be mounted as USB drive to a computer - they replaced it with MTP. How come that USB Host works ??
Because this time your phone will be the host and not your PC. That the internal storage can't be connected as ums doesn't mean your phone can't play host for usb thumb drives. All the honeycomb tablets do that already and some of them also just use mtp, like the Galaxy Tab 10.1 I'm typing this from.

is it only your supposition? or you have already checked this?
as it says the link above:
"What we will probably do eventually is add an import/export concept to removable storage. So the Camera will always save to internal-16GB, and when you pop in an SD card (or insert a thumb drive on USB host devices) you can start a migration or import/export dialog."
Am I right that there is no ability to connect usb flash drives for now on this device? Sorry, English is not my native language so I could make a mistke while translate this.
Explain to me please. usb-host for usb flash devices present or not?
Thank you in advance.
Has anyone who has the phone ACTUALLY tried it?

meanwhile this is very important function for device that doesn't have micro SD support.=(

I think that it isn't samsung fault. GN have the same USB swith that Galaxy Note have. so the hardware is similar. I think the reason may be in new ICS (in that case I hope we will get host later) or in same that GN doesn't support usb mass storage (in that case we can forget about host).

It's neither.
ICS obviously supports it, as it was part of the sourcecode from hc and onwards.
And it cannot have anything to do with the way it connects to a pc, as that is nothing but a problem with the fact, that the storage for the pc and the storage for app-data is on the same partition, meaning that mounting this partition to a pc in ums would render the phone useless meanwhile.

No it doesn't but I think I know why, both of the drives are ntfs. Let me format them to fat 32 and try again.
You have to use a cable like this to test:

How do I mount a USB drive?

I've got 4.0.2 running - mice work fine. But how do I reliably mount USB drives? I tried downloading USB watcher OTG from the market, but the application is incredibly buggy and unstable.
Any other ways?

ICS and the Galaxy nexus no longer uses USB mount.
We now have something called MTP, and If you have the correct drivers installed your device should appear in my computer as a media device and then you just copy and paste as normal.
I have just had a ***** of a time getting my GN to show up in My Computer. In the end all I had to do was update Windows Media Player.

Lots of people seem to be getting these confused. I'm talking about using USB OTG to plug USB flash drives into the Nexus and then access the files on the drive.
MTP is working fine for me with both Windows 7 and Windows 8. No need for installation of drivers, it seems to be 'plug and play'.
Thanks for the reply!

Android 4.0.2 does not support auto mounting USB drives automatically, or does not support USB host mode ?
I'd like to use my GN as a remote control for a DSLR. I believe it is not a matter of mounting a flash drive (but who knows ?), and I can't get it to work on my stock Android 4.0.2. It may be the cable I bought which does not work, but I'd like to know if it's not my Android version which causes the problem before buying another cable ?

Will my tablet recognise my Sony Handycam? Can i upload videos to youtube from it?

Hey guys
So basically I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC19E camcorder, and was wondering if i plugged it into my galaxy tab using the samsung usb adapter thing, will it recognise it and allow me to take and transfer files to and from the tab?
As i want to upload some videos to youtube but it wont work on my computer?
So im basically asking if anybody has got mass storage access to devices they have plugged into the tab 10.1
Thanks in advance for any help
Adam
I have a Sony dcr-sr100. It mounts to my galaxy tab 10.1 on stock firmware.
I have found that " high" powered USB devices are rejected by this tab, which is annoying. But i have found that how you connect the devices matter also.
E.g. if the adaptor is plugged in then i use my USB drive to the adapter is does not work.
If my USB drive is plugged into the adapter then into the tab it usually works, if not pull out and try again right away.
If you can get a powered USB hub, this will help for connecting more devices. Generic keyboard & mice work fine ( if not " high" powered)
USB mass storage otg app in the market will help to mount more drives at once and enable access to NTFS formatted drives which are not supported on the stock firmware.

I don't see much point paying more than this.
Also the " card reader" versions are designed to only mount one card at a time since that is how the stock device handles otg. But if you already have USB card reader your happy with, it can be used with USB mass storage OTG app from the market. ( Which also adds NTFS support).

There is rick of the corded version breaking on the cable, but it is a cheap replacement fix.

[Q] Why won't USB OTG work correctly? (Galaxy Note 2 N7100 x - demo version)

I have a demo Galaxy Note 2, which is running on the Revolution HD 8.0 rom. I flashed the following PIT file;
PIT_N7100_16GB_20121102.pit
The device works perfectly; very smooth, no FC's, the full 10.16GB of system space etc etc. However, one issue I am having is getting USB OTG to work.
When I plug in any one of my 4 USB OTG cables, I get the following;
'USB Mass storage connected'
'USB mass storage unexpectedly removed'
Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening? I was hoping to use my Note 2 as a portable media viewer for the photos/videos I take on my DSLR. Kind of frustrating ...
Does your device do this at all? Better still, if you have a demo version of the Note 2, does USB OTG work on your device?
Really hope someone can help,
Thanks

USB OTG works on my device but...
Without a power source I can only see USB sticks and SDCards.
If my hard drive enclosures have an external power source that I hook them up to, then they work too. It the drive is NTFS formated then you have to use Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ to see it.
Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. I actually ordered and replaced the usb connection port, yet the issue still remains. So I am quite sure it isn't a hardware fault. I'll try and find the mod you have mentioned ...
Just out of curiosity, is there anything else I can flash beyond the pit file, the kernel and the rom? My device is a 'demo' Note 2, so I am starting to think that maybe Samsung put some other firmware file on the device that tells it not to fully mount USB OTG devices (it'd make sense to do such a thing in order to stop customers in a shop loading up their software from a USB stick).

I've tried everything I can think of to get this problem sorted. I am starting to think that it is a hardware issue relating to the fact that the 3G aerial that would normally be powered/connected to the USB connector board is not attached.
As such, the USB power being delivered to USB OTG devices is higher than normal (given that there is no 3G power drain)...so it perhaps overloads and disconnects connected devices.
I have replaced the USB connector board with a hardware revision 0.2 board (the one that came with the phone was a 0.7). I have installed the following files via Odin;
BOOTLOADER_N7100XXDLJ2_422394_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5
CODE_N7100XXDLJ2_422394_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5
CSC_XEF_N7100OXADLJ2_422394_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5
MODEM_N7100XXDLJ2_422394_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5
t03g_0907.pit
I don't think there are any other software partitions on the phone that can be overwritten (the phone is therefore 'stock' as far as could possibly be the case with a demo phone).
If you do find a solution, I would be most grateful to hear about it. This is my perfect device for video/picture editing & uploading to Youtube whilst cycle touring (I don't need the phone connectivity when abroad). Although I can work around the USB OTG limitation, it would be incredibly useful to have that functionality.
All the best,
Laurence
me to.. stil looking for this solution. When OTG pluged to my phone, it's rapidly connect-disconnect in 2 seconds x_x
ROM : hawkish extreem 4.1.2

I have another issue. When i plug OTG cable, I can use flash disc and everything is OK. But then, when i unplug and plug in charger, charging doesn't start. I have to reboot phone, and then charges...

So any one found solution? It's very important function for me in my work.

I face the same problem
solution is very simple
go to Play Store
search USB mass storage
