[Q] Help with newly aquired used KF 1st gen - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
First off I'd like to point out I am a noob when it comes to kindle rooting/flashing but have experience rooting mobile devices and most recently the Razr Maxx so I have some basic knowledge but not enough to figure out what my kindle is running. I recently bought a used Kindle Fire 1st gen and I have just realized that it is or has been rooted at some point and time . Here are a few things I can offer the experts to try and help me figure out where to start to find out what I'm running, etc.
- Looks like its running stock not a custom ROM. I see nothing to be related to Android System, no Google play market or android anywhere in the device settings
- The system version under device tab shows 6.3.1_user_7 digit number (option to "update your kindle" is greyed out)
- When I power on the Kindle the boot logo shows the words Kindle in white and FIRE in blue. At the bottom of the screen it says "press power button for boot options"
-When I hold the power button down the boot options are: Normal/Recovery/Reset Boot Mode
-In Recovery it shows that its running TWRP V 2.1.1
-I have had a error message that says "The process android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" pop up at random times
Before I figured out it had been flashed/rooted at some point and time, I went to the device options and factory reset to default because the previous owner left some apps and games on it, not sure if that was a good or bad thing to do I do not see any Superuser App or anything that would be a giveaway that it has root. To the best of my knowledge it's been functioning properly other than the forceclose issue I mentioned above.
Hopefully someone can help me figure out what this thing is running if anything and what i should update and what exactly a rooted Kindle allows me to do as the thought had not even crossed my mind about it being able to get root.. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

This is running stock with the custom bootloader and recovery

Im sorry but what does Side load mean? Never have heard that one on the mobile side of the forum sorry for the dumb question.
What are the perks of having a flashed ROM on a Kindle other than the customization part of it?

means find an apk online and put it on your sd card and manually install it.
benefits range from faster overall, to being able to get more apps

Ah OK, thanks for the clarification. Do they improve battery life like with mobile ROMs? I've noticed the battery life isn't that great on this kindle.
In regards to the get more apps part do you mean by being able to get apks to install manually vs what's available in the Amazon store?

Can you recommend a good stable ROM? I don't plan on flashing over and over again as this kindle will go to my daughter.

Any chance of porting the software to a different device?

Anyone know if there will be any chance that the Kindle Fire OS will be able to be installed on a different device? I would love to turn my dell duo into a kindle fire if there was a way, I already have android installed on it so I wouldnt think it would be much of a stretch...
It's already been done, look around

Not really a "how to"...
The UI is just a launcher app that can be installed on any aneroid, you would just have to figure out what dependents are required.

Has anyone figured out a way to install the amazon launcher over the standard Android install?

It's not compatible. Try using a custom ROM.

there is good news and bad news:
I'll start with the bad one - not really possible, as it is not just a simple app, it's more like a framework, and devs need to work too much for this to be possible, if this is ever possible
The good news - you can download the kindle apps from amazon, and use them one by one, like Kindle for Android, Amazon Mp3, etc. :good:
I was looking for the same thing and found this post

I was trying it a little bit yesterday, and messed something up... I am going to flash a new ROM either tonight or in the next cpl of days and then I am going to try again making sure I follow the steps correctly.
I did get the amazon video app to load, but when I tried searching for a specific title it did a FC

Kindle Fire HD losing root access

I rooted my 7" Kindle fire HD shortly after getting it. To my surprise there was an automated program that did it for me so I didn't have to learn a whole lot. That was ~ 5 months ago. The big thing was to add the play store and a custom launcher which I did (apex launcher in case it matters).
Yesterday the only launcher available to me was the kindle launcher. I thought perhaps an update went wrong so I uninstalled and reinstalled the apex launcher via the play store. The launcher works, but I have to access it by going to the play store and clicking "open" on the app page (where you could install/uninstall the app). I searched how to install a launcher since I remembered taking different step other than just installing from the play store. The article mentioned going to app/data and when I do it says i no longer have root access.
I tried running the root program and I got a access denied message and root failed try again.
My question ends up being did I actually loose root access or is it something else? All I really need is to have the home button take me to the apex launcher and I wouldn't know anything had changed.
Use this to see if you have root.

If so, what version of the software are you running? Sure sounds like you got updated.

Sorry, no root access....
Software version 7.2.3 . I had thought about an update as well, but I didn't find anything about a recent update. I didn't think 7.2.3 or any of the released updates messed with root access.
Sorry. I just realized you have the HD. This is the forum for the KF2 non HD.
I'm sure you'll get more help in the right section.

Kindle fire 8.9 2nd gen not working

So i just found my old kindle charged it up and factory restored it. But now it doesn't want to do anything it won't download apps and is just acting weird. I think at one point i tried to root it using some app called king root. I'm not sure if that's what is causing issues now or what but i was wondering if there was a way to fix it. I realize its a bit outdated but i paid like 300 for it i would like to use it for something. Any help would be greatly appreciated [emoji16]
