Several problems with s4 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi all,
so, i persuaded my friend to buy a s4, bt now she's facing several problems with it, the problems are:
1) heating issue (my Note 2 heats too, bt she claims that hers heat very fast, even for short usages)
2) Front camera is blurry ( i'll post a pic soon)
3) she put her phone to charge the whole night (about 8 hours) and when she turned it on, the battery percentage was only 95%
She also bought the phone for a cheaper price ( I'm thinking it's nt 100% genuine, bt she said she gt it from a authorised dealer)
Hope there's a solution to these problems
for now, i'm suggesting her to send it back to a samsung center for a change of device.

How much cheaper are we talking about here? You can always buy warranty as well just for protection. As for the heating issue, I do find it to be more frequent that my previous Note 2 or S3. I noticed this especially when I'm using the camera, YouTube, browser. Haven't even played any games on it yet.
As for the camera, you might try to go into settings. Perhaps its trying to auto-focus too much - I also have this issue sometimes with the camera when it wouldn't focus, but just adjust the settings maybe.

These issues are common amongst many users. I personally would not recommend this phone to a friend without telling then about these issues. Its a shame that Samsung has the latest and greatest and then ruin it with these small but important problems.
I'm extremely happy with my phone ONLY because I am rooted and will have access to amazing ROMs that will cure these problems. Software aside, the actually device is amazing and i wouldn't want any other.
The camera could be blurry due to the packaging sticker that most people don't notice and don't remove that's on the camera. Although the sticker has a round cut out and shouldn't affect the picture at all unless its misaligned. Some say its there for protection others say to remove it. Do as u wish.
On the topic of heat, if your charging and heavily using your phone, it DOES get unreasonably hot. Uncomfortable but still not a defect. I'm sure the device is more than capable of handling these temperatures. But it is uncomfortable to hold...this is also very subjective. Hot to me may not be hot to you and vise versa. But I think that it is much hotter than older phones so I understand why people can be alarmed by the difference.
Charging batteries is a wonky topic. Batteries all behave slightly differently. They are temperamental and take time to perform their best. Fully draining and then fully charging ur battery is good practice to ensure good and long lasting performance. But I'd say its too early to call your issue a problem that requires a replacement. If it were, let's say, 75% I'd do something about it. 95? Ehhh not an issue. I suggest getting a larger aftermarket battery anyway if you want acceptable battery life. (12hours)

Seriously? I came to the S4 from the Fascinate (S1), and my USB port is just as firm as it ever was on the Fascinate. (Of course, haven't had the S4 enough to tell..)

Uh... those problems are not normal. Those sound like serious issues and do not seem consistent with a typical S4 experience, at least not mine or the two other people I know that have one. I would even consider that your friend purchased an imitation s4, which are known to exist.

If ever in doubt, return the phone to where she got it from.

I, likewise, have NONE of those issues. At all. I do have occasional stuttering lag, but that's it. If I were having those issues I would send it back.

Though it is possible that there are hardware issues with the device itself, here are some common things to check:
1) Heating is normal when running graphic intensive apps like games. If the phone is heating up while idle, it is a problem.
2) Make sure there is no plastic covering on the front camera. The picture may appear gritty on the screen but transfer it to a computer and check the resolution.
3) I am almost certain it is taking forever to charge because she may be using an old charger or an old usb cable. The S4 comes with a different charger output (0.5V and 2 A) & will charge the phone quickly. The older chargers are (0.5V & 1A), which will charge the S4 but take forever.
Check these things first. If any of these are off, replace the phone asap!

[Q] N7100 Suddenly Won't Charge - Ideas?

Hi all, I'm pretty lost here. My Note II (N7100) suddenly won't charge. Earlier today it charged just fine. I've only ever run stock with root on it. It's not the charger, it's not the cable. I've tried many of both, all of which worked before, none of which work now. I flashed back to stock recovery and did a factory reset, and the problem persists.
When I plug it into a charger while off, briefly a gray battery screen with what looks like a stationary 'wait spinner' will pop up and then the screen will turn back off again. I know the USB port is not totally FUBARed, because I can flash it with heimdall in Linux. It shows up in lsusb when in the bootloader, but not otherwise. The port is pretty much spotless, especially compared with that on my GNex, which still works fine.
I've tried leaving the battery out for an hour, holding the power button, etc. It almost seems like a problem that could be solved by discharging some capacitors, but battery pulls always solved those on my Galaxy Nexus.
Any thoughts on other things I can try?
I can't even figure out how to contact Samsung support in case this is somehow a warranty/hardware issue. At least on their US site the N7100 isn't even an option in the pulldowns they want me to go through.
After some calls to Samsung USA and Canada, I gave up. Apparently the phone is from the UAE, for which Samsung USA has no phone number, and their repair centers won't touch it if it's international. This is really stupid and I plan to write to Samsung about it. It had only been three weeks since I ordered it, so I am returning it to the Amazon seller for a refund. I'll let them deal with their supplier in UAE I guess. I hate to do that, but it seems to be a hardware problem and I have no other recourse at this point.
I cant really help here but i wanted to let you know i had the same problem with a white note 2 from Carphone Warehouse in the UK, just stopped charging after owning the phone for 2 days (i had also only rooted and running stock rom).
Carphone warehouse replaced the handset for me and havent had a problem with the new one so far but its made me take extra care when plugging or unplugging the usb cable ( i use Airdroid for file transfers now). I guess there must be a defect with a limited few usb ports on the note 2.
I thought it might be a 3rd party usb cable to blame (i use a blackberry usb cable at work but ive stopped that now and only use the official Samsung cable).
Sorry i cant help just wanted to share my experiences, hope you get it sorted, good luck!
Thanks for chiming in Steve, good to know I'm not the only one. I saw another post on here like that too, maybe it was yours? There was no discussion. The strange thing is ODIN worked just fine. Maybe a loose connection only on one/both of the power pins?
Nah it wasn't me mate, I had just put it down to me being heavy handed and thought nothing more of it till I saw your post.
I've seen a post in the Jellybam thread today about the charging being down to software but I don't know how true this is as i've yet to check the facts.
Did you manage to get it replaced? I remember it was the worst feeling in the world when the realization hit that my phone wouldn't charge.

Yeah I just invoked the Amazon.com return policy, sent it back for a refund, and ordered another one. It was supposed to arrive today, but apparently UPS had some kind of mechanical issue and now it's delayed until tomorrow. I just need it to get here before my next month's Verizon plan bills so I can cancel before paying another month.
Sorry to drag up an old thread but this has just happened to me, EXACTLY the same as OP.
I've reset it, wiped everything, re-flashed latest stock firmware. Tried 3 different cables and two different chargers.
Pretty sure the battery is good because if I take it out of the phone and charge it on the dock, it works fine. If I then put the battery back into the phone, the phones works in every way except it wont charge
I have most of my digital life on this thing, I am so screwed without it. Look like its a warranty repair job then? Ive had the phone about 3 months from Phones 4U :crying:

Happened to mine to T-mobile version. Never dropped it, never got it wet, only 1.5 months old.
WTF? Seriously?
Behavior:
Charges sometimes.
Charge sometimes stops at 70% or less.
Screen sensitivity screws up sometimes.
Data constantly being transmitted whether WiFi or cell network.
Never dropped.
Never wet.
Never harshly impacted.
Never rooted.
Tried factory reset.
Tried pulling battery.
Tried different chargers and cables.
Wondering if the trident aegis case put too much pressure on the charger cable by pushing it sideways with the flap.
Any ideas?

Check in the box, and if you have an EROS Group sticker on it that means it's covered under warranty here in Dubai, UAE as they are the main distributor here for Samsung products.

This happened to me yesterday after spilling tea on it. I took the device apart as per this video, checked the connectors and reassembled it. Voila, the charger is working again. Obviously I take no responsibility etc etc.
My Samsung Galaxy Note 2 wont charge
I have also had this problem where my galaxy note 2 wont charge. I have tried all the chargers i have used successfully in the past and none of them will charge it now. I had the problem some weeks ago and now it has happened again. I only purchased the phone in January 2013. It is very frustrating. I have never dropped my phone or damaged it in any way what so ever. I have no idea what the problem could be but i will be taking it back to Telstra as i need it sorted out.

I always put my phone on charge overnight , woke up yesterday and it hadn't charged. Swapped batteries - no problem - then put original battery back in, hey presto, charging!
But since then both batteries have run out and I couldn't get either to take any charge. Got it plugged in now and just like other people I've got a static charging ring showing, And no power.
Bought an external charger to try and get round this, but has anyone come up with a proper solution??

a mate of mine just mentioned to me today that his note was charging strangely recently, apparantly he took an air gun (on low setting) to the charging port to blast out any miniscule dust n stuff and that fixed it!
Seems they're very sensitive and the smallest thing can make it act strange

Uh... no? This is about the coolest running tablet on the market. Also, I have read every single piece of literature and commentary on the internet about the Note 8, and not once has heat been mentioned. Where, exactly, are you reading this?
Mine runs perfectly. No heat issues whatsoever.

I haven't noticed much heat or warmth at all, much less heat problems. I'm not a tablet gamer. But I do watch video, and download files (sometimes big ones and using Advanced Download Manager). And not heat issues.
Mine gets pretty warm on the lower lefthand side of the back plastic. Probably 10 degrees over ambient temp.
This is consistent with other devices that run at relatively high clock, or my phone if the wimax antenna is on - I'm not seeing it as a problem.
The only time I have felt any excessive heat, is when I was watching Netflix and charging at the same time. I use this tablet very heavily and have not noticed any heat issues!

Device warming up is not the same as a heat problem. My S3 and the Note 8 will both get warm with heavy use, but so will everything else. You have to have realistic expectations on a device that only has passive cooling. Heat is a problem if it causes the device to crash or otherwise misbehave.
Used mine to play a game with 3D graphics for an hour or two and it was only slightly warm. Tablet was sitting on my pillow.

Echoing this statement. My Note 8 gets noticeably warm on the left side even on lower loads. It's never become hot enough to be an issue though.

My charger does get warmer than my G Note 10.1 and my G S3...
Mine is just like any other high end tablet. Stays cool but gets slightly warm warm when used heavily. I have the 3G version.

A few months ago, my wife and I visited the local AT&T store and picked up a Galaxy S4 and a Galaxy Note 8.0.
While my SG4 is working beautifully, the Note 8 is unusable, even after having it sent in for repairs (the problem persists as if it was never repaired).
Basically, it has a glitch that I've seen before on PCs that have a heat-damaged GPU. When the system is booted, it displays a graphically garbled mess and will not achieve full boot.
We have reloaded it, to no avail, and as I say, it's already been sent in for repairs yet it came back to us as if nothing had been done to it at all. It worked intermittently, as i had before the repair, so my wife tried to make due because we couldn't take time off from work to go back to AT&T in the last few weeks since we received our Note 8 back from Samsung (or whoever they farmed out the repair to). In the last few days of my wife using it, it's gone from intermittent to full-blown unusable. Now, about 15 to 20 seconds into the boot sequence, the GPU overheat glitch rears its head. There's no way now to get to the desktop to attempt another reload... but that wouldn't help anyway. When we last took the unit in for repairs, I reset the device to factory defaults at the request of the AT&T rep that was assisting us. Within 2 minutes after booting back up, the system was nearly unusable.
It was a rockin' little tablet... for about 4 days until it started overheating. I'm figuring it's likely a manufacturing flaw, based on the testimony of others that for the most part claim little or no heat issues.
Now, I'm not sure what we can do to rectify this. I hope we're not stuck with what amounts to a brick.
FYI / background-info: I've been a computer user for 31 years, and worked professionally in IT for the last 15 years. Embedded hardware hacking and embedded systems development are a few of my many technical hobbies. To say the least, I've been very thorough in my examination of this problem, and have an immense amount of experience with a large variety of hardware, which is why I recognize the problem to be related to overheating damage to the GPU -- I've seen it plenty of times before... the summer heat where I live will kill a GPU if it's fans aren't cleaned monthly, due to the amount of dust that blows in from the plains states immediately to our west.
i have GT-N5100
the unit so warm (not overheat) if i played some 3D games for a few times.

and maybe i suggesting you not playing much games or heavy games with this Note 8.0
i don't know about the other handheld, but note 8.0 almost suck my battery 1minutes : 1% just for play LINE I Love Coffee or any light-weight games.
BUT, if you do for work (write on S-Note or drawing or adjust some shortcut and setting) it'll be so damn long lasting battery, but once you play (at least) 1 game, you'll see the battery drain so much.
don't know how to fix this (even i already turn on the Power Saving and turn off another function except vibrate, and screen rotation, also wifi...because i use battery program..that program indicate use Mobile Data/3G more drain than Wifi)

That's how the first Note 8 that I was shipped was (my post about it is somewhere) it was roasting when it arrived and oddly the battery showed it as fully charged. Screen was a complete disaster, reset it and it was fine for a few days then started acting up with the heat and screen issue. I only had had it a week so I just asked for an exchange (at first they wanted me to go through the warranty to fix or replace it ha! No). Got this new one and have had no issues (except the wifi which I finally seem to have working but that's whole other thing), like others said it just gets a little warm on the left side but nothing like that old unit and nothing horribly burning type of noticeable.

please help me about my galaxy note 8,GTN5100.
I have my galaxy Note8 for a year,and it was perfect for me.i just play candy crush saga with it and check my facebook and instagram and twitter.but it is about a week that it overheats,after 5 min that i connect to the internet via wifi the back of the device on the left becomes very hot,and after that the battery drains very fast.it is not rooted and its android version in 4.2.1.

Mine said last night that it had to close down programs and I could only use the phone because it was overheating. It was cool to the touch every where and battery monitor said the temp was 30*C or 86*F. So does it over heat not too the ftouch as it always seems cool when held, But?????

Has your nexus gone bad? Suffered from a damaged speaker, fried CPU, broken screen or similar? Here's the thread to share your exprerience.
Personally I bought my Nexus, brand new on September/October 2012. Sometime on August 2013 a got caught up in an endless bootloop, even odin or similar tricks couldn't save the day so took it to the repair centre (Smartec Greece) and had it back after 4-5 hours with a new motherboard. Pretty fast- problem solved, didn't have to pay something, even though I never got to know which part actually gone bad.
That's about it. I also have replaced stock battery with a new one as the old one was draining faster than the speed of light, no matter what rom I was on.
So let me hear ya!!!!
The goddamn USB port issue, couldn't charge my phone, until I poked that little bugger in there to rise it up a little, created such a hassle

You were lucky, after a year and a half of use my USB finally took a sh*t completely. Luckily the insurance I use has no deductable so I had to fire up my old Incredible 2 for a few days while I waited for a replacement. I'm so glad we have nandroid. All I had to do is unlock the bootloader on my new device, put TWRP back on and restore my nandroid. No hassle really.

Sometime on August 2013 a got caught up in an endless bootloop, even odin or similar tricks couldn't save the day so took it to the repair centre (Smartec Greece) and had it back after 4-5 hours with a new motherboard. Pretty fast- problem solved, didn't have to pay something, even though I never got to know which part actually gone bad.
That's about it. I also have replaced stock battery with a new one as the old one was draining faster than the speed of light, no matter what rom I was on.

The same happened to me but I let the battery drain and then charge it for a bit to eneter recovery mode to restore from a back up. Why didnt you do that? I think your problem wasnt just a bootloop problem.

Trashed my charge port one morning getting out of bed with a bad hangover..Forgot my phone was plugged and snapped the port right off :crying: I just bought a new charge port flex from ebay for $10 and replaced it myself in about 20 mins

Last year my Nexus dropped into the sea, but luckily survived
My Nexus's battery was damaged so from phone service I got a new one in 2012.
Then My Galaxy Nexus got a screen burn-in ("ghost image") and in the phone service they changed a screen, but my Nexus got that screen burn-in again..
Everything have worked so fine and I never used any other kernels on my Nexus, than the stock ones by Google and CM's kernel and ofc. my modified CM kernel., I have tried some custom kernels, but I never liked any custom kernel. My Nexus has scratches on its cases but screen has always been clean and good. :3
I'm really happy, that my Nexus looks like a new one, but only that screen burn in is annoying
I am on handset number five; one blown earpiece, two cracked screens and the last one had the interface between the digitizer and the motherboard come loose. I was able to wedge some paper between the battery door and phone body to make it work until the replacement came in. Thankfully I got the phone when beat buy had them for free and ponied up for the service plan.

Have mine for 2 years... only problem is an oled burn where the notification bar clock is... the green and red oleds have less brightens on lower brightenes levels... apart from that everything ok.

I'm past the 1.5 year mark with my gnex and the only issue I have so far happened when it fell from my recliner while connected to the charger. The micro-usb metal piece on the cable got bent from the impact and since then I get a weird buzz/rattle when the phone vibrates. Had to reduce the vibrator strength on fancy kernel to get rid of that specific annoyance.
This has been the case for about 8 months now and the phone is still charging fine. Why I don't know is if this is a symptom that will eventually lead to the dreaded no-charging issue that some have shared here.
Had to change whole charging strip. Gnex was showing frequent charging/discharging and battery would drain within an hour!

1.5 year old phone. Volume-up button doesn't work, and hasn't for some time. To increase volume, I have to press volume down and then move the slider up on-screen. No big deal. Also had the USB port break a couple of months ago and had to get it changed. Otherwise it runs fine. Still on stock 4.2 ROM, I keep the GPS switched off most the time, and also have all the lower-level Google sync stuff disabled (screw Google), and battery typically lasts a day and a half of average usage.
Had the Galaxy Nexus since release day and it served me well. It was fast and I only went through a few. Last October I got my Note 3 so I retired my G'Nex, but now I'm going to be using it as a MP3 Player that I can just leave in my car vs using my Phone all the time. Just looking for a Rom that turns it into the Android version of an IPOD touch.

Hey guys, replacement day is approaching, and I keep reading these articles about overheating / overdraining battery issues in the replacement Note 7.
I wanted to open a main thread about how everybody who got a replacement Note 7 is doing and if they can report any issue...
So, if you have replaced your Note 7, how is it doing?

Got mine a week or so ago, no issues here. I managed to root it again using Sprint userdebug and it runs much better than the previous note did. Battery also seems to run very cool. The highest temp Ive seen was 34Âșc, which is incredibly cool. That was while I was out playing Pokemon Go during a hot afternoon by the way!!
No issues here, other than occasional SD820 lag.
No problems here either...
Agreed, Jo issues other then slight SD820 lag but since the new update its far smoother than the old Note 7 I had and only has the occasional stutter.
Edit: Battery life is still fairly similarr, however, I think that's due to my personal usage.
Works great, the was a couple of minor things that were different. I can't remember what since they were so insignificant

Got the replacement on Sep 21
Today, Sep 25, about 11 am, my note 7 got uncomfortably warm, it can be felt both on the back through the synthetic leather cover (wallet case) and on the front, but mostly on the back.
Turned the phone off for at least 5 minutes, then turned it back on, within a minute it gets warm again, and in about 4-5 min. it gets warmer, unusually warm.
Turned it back off for at least 30 min., turned it back on again, and this time I can't even input my security PIN, the screen isn't responding.
I turned it back off, take off my 256 GB SD card.
Called Samsung (The recall Phone#), they answered right away (very surprised) told them what happened, she then told me that this is not the first time they had this issue with the new replacement Note7, she transfer me to the support department, she told me the tech support department should issue me some kind of report# or whatever, I forgot, so that I could bring that to ATT to get another replacement phone.
The support reps just told me to bring the phone to the store to get it replaced.
Went to ATT Corporate Store in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
The sales person told me that I'm the second person with the same issue. The store can't issue a second replacement phone, she suggested me to bring it to ATT Device Support Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
But by then it's already close to 5 PM, Sunday. The office/store will be closed in few minutes.
So the ATT store clerk says to bring it to Best Buy where they have ATT reps inside to get it replaced.
So I went there, bad news....the wait is long...I decided to come back the next day.
End of story.
Now, Sep 25, Sunday night, I tried once more to powered up the Note7
It works, it didn't get warm, battery is at 40%
Put the SD card back in, and back up everything.
About an hour later, the phone gets warm again!
This time I didn't turn it off, I just stop using it and leave it on, I set the battery to "Medium Power" Saving Mode.
Battery now at 25%.
I think this time, it could be a software issue.
I remember when I change my 2009 iMac hard drive with SSD, I had to install a software to make the Fan work properly.
Samsung need to call that software company
The only issue that I'm having is when I'm scrolling through the app drawer with my finger is very slow. When I scroll with the S pen it's very fast. Other than that no complaints the phone hasn't overheated at all.

I'm noticing some bluetooth issues.
It won't connect to my asus zenwatch2.
It will connect to my macbook pro for a few minutes.
I've cleared the bluetooth data and cache and turned bluetooth on and off.
Ditto on the bluetooth issues here. I use a Bluetooth continuous glucose monitor that worked great before I swapped. Cleared cache, reset, et cetera but connectivity is still intermittent.

I m getting the note 7 would you guys recommend me getting one
no problems at all! wonderful phone!
Exynos model here, no problems.
Replaced Exynos working well.
With new N7 I got better battery life and the phone doesn't heat up at all during fast charge (V1 did a little). If anything, the touch was not registering too well, sometimes I had to press twice to register. That was yesterday, today it's fine now, so maybe I just need to wait for things to settle, since I was downloading 3 GB of programs and data and still setting things up.
Im having bluetooth issues as well. it keeps disconnecting from my gear fit 2 and i have to manually open the app and hit connect, which works about 75% of the time. Also battery does not last as long as my previous one. its not horrible but i notice the difference.
Does anyone have gap problem in the replacement note 7?!

yeah i can slide a sticky note along both sides of the frame and glass on mine. my previous one was almost as bad. From what I understand this is by design.

Note 7 Successful Life! Now what?

I kept my Note 7 from Verizon. I disabled Samsung's update app through ADB which prevented ALL of the device killing updates from ever even appearing. This is the second version Note 7, with the green battery charging icon, that I obtained after I brought my first Note 7 back for the first recall.
I have since used my Note 7 ever since, with zero problems of any kind. And I just ordered my new Note 9 to replace it, 512GB and 8GB RAM. Fantastic journey!!!
I'm going to keep m Note 7 and was wondering if any definitive solutions for replacing the battery ever emerged? My Note 7 is at the point where it's battery's capacity has simply diminished from normal use. I have every single battery sucking feature always enabled - high accuracy location scanning, etc. I get a few hours out of a full charge before I'm getting low, plus I get precipitous zeroing in cold weather. Like, the phone shuts off if I leave it in the front pocket of my jacket when downhill skiing, when the battery gets below 40%.
So, I *would* like to replace the battery at some point, for that issue. Will an FE battery just go into it as a direct replacement? I did buy an S8+ battery at one point, after reading that it looked like it would fit/work, but I never got around to trying it. And tonight I just read later that it supposedly won't fit/work. So, I was rewarded for my inaction, in that case

Sorry for mistopic, but can you share your ROM somehow?
My N930V is simply killing me. Interface lags are constant with lots of crashes.
I believe to have the first version without green battery, maybe it's software is not as good as second one.
Can't find any solutions for this on the web unfortunately.

John, I have a little insight on replacing your battery. Luckily, all Samsungs S6 and up have the same connector. If you are able to find a battery that fits, whether it be an S7 or S7 edge battery, you might be able to do this repair yourself! I haven't had the opportunity to attempt this repair, as I live in a small town, and the device is almost unheard of nowadays. I work at a mobile repair shop with a national branch, known as CPR Cell Phone Repair. I'll do a little more research on this, and give you a reply with an answer on whether or not it's possible.
The battery protection circuit has been *unofficially* identified as the culprit of these devices. So in that case, use a different device's battery, right?

You know, I bought a new battery for an S7 edge for it, but never tried installing it because I did some more reading and thought I saw something that made me think it wouldn't fit or have the correct connector or something.
But, I still have the phone and the new battery and it would be way cool to still do the replacement! The original battery is just really tired and beat. It was diwn to holding maybe a third of its original charge capacity. It would be like having a new phone again if I got a working replacement battery into it!! ??
