I feel stupid, but still need help please - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

OK so I have been trying to DL and set up custom lock screens, but for some odd reason I am having a brain fart and can't get them working. I have tried Zipthemer and also CWR and neither seems to work on my GS3. I am also trying to find some cool themes and get them working, but always get errors.
The errors for the lock screens through Zipthemer says "can't find the control file".
Through CWR it just doesn't work.
With the themes they just say that they are missing assets. Mainly for the screen resolution. Apparently I'm great with CPUs, but I feel like a COMPLETE NOOB when it comes to android molding.
PLEASE HELP the noob!!!!!

First thing you need to answer is if you are rooted or not..... if not I am not sure you can apply themes. If you are rooted, then you should state which rom you are using. I am going to take a wild guess and say you are on stock rom not rooted.... Not sure what CWR is, but if the app says requires root then it won't work on a non rooted phone.... Since you are new to the scene, rooting your phone will void the warrenty incase you are thinking of going that route.....
Some launchers can be themed but you need to say which one you are using also.....

Yes I am rooted. I'm using CM 10.1.0 RC2 on an AT&t GS3. And sorry CWR was suppose to be Clockworkmod recovery. CWM.

Software update from T-Mobile with custom rom??

Just keep getting a notification about a software update from T-Mobile is this safe to do when having a custom rom? The FreeGS3 R6
Is anyone having this notification as well??
Sent from iPhones worst enemy THE SGS3
Don't do it. Realistically, the dev should've disabled the room update feature if he used the TMo ROM for his base. You may want to pm him and let him know.

Its not gonna do anything. If you accept it'll download and attempt to install but will fail.
You can go into app management and disable the software update apps there.
FreeGS3 is a wip. Dev is also working on incorporating a software update for his rom, so it may have been left purposely. Either way, no harm has or will come beccause its there. Its already been covered many times in that roms thread as well as multiple others.

Titanium
Use Titanium backup to force stop the updates from happening or uninstall them all together I did that and now the updates are gone.
Since the thread is covered and done. I'm curious as to the whole update search app not hurting anything. On the g2x WhitehawkX always removed the possibility for it cause it was !
1. Annoying
2. Something that was always checking and causing battery drainage. It this not true?

Do you mean the Software Update and FW Upgrade apps? On a custom rom I dont think itd matter either way. Most likely you wouldnt be able to use it since you are rooted, deodexed and prob on a custom recovery. Like what happened for many on FreeGS3. Able to download the update but installation failed. But we knew it was available.
I dont think it uses much in the way of resources. He could be right about battery though, and im sure he knows more thsn I do on that subject.
In short it doesnt hurt anything to be there, but if it cant be used, isnt it just wasted space?

In case you havent checked this out

I know a few know about the TW laincher ported to all devices but I thought Id share for those who didnt.
Mainly cause I just found it and was really excited what it did.
It adds a whole bunch of TW goodies like sounds, apps, etc.
I have it running on AOKP and love it.
so hope you enjoy it as well

I downloaded this and when i tried to use the TW launcher it kept giving me errors. It was un-usable for me. Anyone else with this issue?
I like it. Email would be nice because I have it on my tablet that is home all the time
Left feedback in the play store

Nice, kind of ironic given the often debated conversation topic between developers over whether TW development versus AOKP or CM is "original"... Now, given like that" originality, we can put a TW app add on... To make the "originals" look like the real "original"....

[Q] Google wallet aokp issue. Yes, I've searched already!

Before anybody flames me, yes, I have searched every forum related to this issue. I am not a noob, just a lurker, so I don't have enough posts to post this in the development section. Here is my issue. I'm running Task650 and Ktoonsez 4.1.2 (build 11.18.2012) and I am trying to install a working version of google wallet. Before I go on, awesome ROM! I flash others and always come crawling back. Anyway, I've tried every variation on getting this to work out there, with no luck. This where I am at now. I can edit my build prop and get the market version of Wallet to work, but obviously it won't once I change my build prop back. If I try to flash the AT&T Modaco zip, I loose NFC in my setting menu. If I try to install the Modaco apk, it acts like its installing it, and at the end I get an "App didn't install" message at the end". My question is, how can I get this to work? If I can't, what exactly is the effect of leaving my build prop set on Nexus? Is it possible to flash the zip file, then extract something from an ota that I can flash to give me back NFC, but leave the rest of the changes the Mocado zip makes alone? If anyone can help me, I pretty much always donate to developers whose hard work I benefit from. Please help if you can. I am stubborn as gravity and will either get this to work or brick my phone trying.
Oh yeah, Its an AT&T phone.
I'm on the same ROM and have not encountered issues. Flash the modaco zip instead of installing, edit your build.prop, then reboot and add your card in the wallet app. After the card is added you can revert the build.prop.

I must have had a corrupt version of the file. I tried again and instead of loosing nfc, or wallet not showing up, the installation aborted. I redownloaded and reflashed with no issues. Thanks!
Glad to hear it! Remember, if you ever switch ROMs always reset the Google wallet app before flashing the new ROM.

One more question. Have yuo had any issue with nfc toggling off randomly since flashing this? It seemed to be working fine but what I have noticed is that if I haven't used nfc for maybe twenty minutes, it toggles off. Its still checked, but I have to uncheck it and recheck it to get it to work. I usually set it to stay on even when my screen is off, and haven't had any issues with it before, even when the phone is asleep. I could write a tasker workaround, I suppose, but I would rather just fix it.
I did notice that occasionally the NFC settings become unavailable. A reboot always fixes it for me.

Can I ask why not? I get not wanting to go as far as custom roms, but with adblockers and access to the system and data partitions, you can do quite a bit without having to go for a full rom.
Well I'm just comfortable with touchwiz and honestly the last phone I had I thought I knew what doing and bricked. So I lost the courage just getting into all this so I'm a newbie...
:'( but I see all the customizations and would love to have them so I just wanted to take the easy way out and get some apks that would work with my stock...

Best way to customize your unrooted phone is probaly thru your launcher of choice... there are some that can be customized more than others, basically what your looking for is different themes/icons which you can find for free or buy in the play store.

Have to agree with lickarock. There's still quite a lot you can do without going all out like full ROMs. If you simply root your phone and load SuperSU (SuperUser), you can load something like ES File Explorer and do simple installs of apk files through there. You really don't have to worry about bricking your phone in that situation.
While I do load different roms on my N2, like you, I just wanted to get blacked out apps also. I'm running blacked out Gmail and Facebook currently, which I loaded through ESFE. Just make sure you uninstall the original apps then install the apks through ESFE and reboot. Everythings running smooth on my phone.
I've had a few scares loading different ROMs where my phone wouldn't boot up and I thought I maybe bricked my phone.......luckily I got it back up and running. Battery pulls suck.......lol
Just be sure to read through all the posts that you find which interest you. Typically, people post issues they are having and possible fixes. If you want to run different roms or something later, just be sure your phone is running the correct specs for it, ie....your baseband version is MA7 vs MC2, not all roms are compatible with multiple versions.
Okay I think I will go that route... ? Say I root it, and 4.2 finally makes its way ota will it still hit my phone or will I have to unrooted in order to get it?

What spary said! You're really better off just waiting for one of the devs to roll the updates out.
Again....read the threads all the way through and if you still have questions, do a SEARCH and see if you can find your answers.......if you can't find after searches, don't be afraid to ask ?s.

If you want a brick-proof(ish) method to get a Root, just Odin a full rooted restore to your phone. Such as this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241136. Its about as mindless and safe as you can get.

If you choose not to root, there are still several ways to have a highly customized phone.
Personally, I am a fan of rooting. I have rooted every android phone I have had except my Note 2. Long story short, I bought my Note 2 through my business and cannot afford to run into any headaches that can sometimes pop up even to the most experienced flasher. I will say the Note 2 is also the first android phone that I haven't felt the need to root for increased performance. CPU, RAM, Battery life, this phone has all three for days.
I created a thread dedicated to creating a custom look without root. And in many ways this is the most custom phone I've ever had.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2274378
It's a work in progress and I am adding more and more stuff all the time.
Also check out mycolorscreen.com
For a blacked out messaging app you might check out Go SMS Pro. There are downloadable themes and you can make your own.

Darkhorse apps flashed broke wifi

I love using the Darkhorse inverted apps. I currently use them on my Note 3 and have no issues. I installed them on The Note 10.1 2014 (SM-P600) and every time it brakes wifi for some reason.
does anyone know of a way to solve this?
Anyone have a kernel to flash possibly? I believe on phones I've had in the past that was a work around. Wondering on tablet though.
To fix previously I had to reflash MK1 firmware then reflash TWRP and Re root but I lose the darkhorse apps. I currently haven't redone the steps and was wondering for some insight.
Thank you

i'm not too familiar with the dark horse apps, but are they for deodexed roms only?
I dunno, Gun said it shouldnt matter. the apps loaded. its Wifi that is at issue. i think i need to reflash kernel to correct.
wondering does anyone have the kernel, just not posted? how do you compile stock kernel? i have the source code, just clueless as to what to do. any type of instruction involved extracting the zImage, or something like that and replacing an existing stand alone kernel to flash but as of this post, i dont know of any stand alone kernels yet for the device.
thanks

compiling crap is way above what I know. if you made a nandroid I think you can reflash just the boot which I believe is the kernel. it's. been so long since I've ever restored that I can't. really be sure. I do make back ups for just in case but haven't restored.
is wifi just a specific router or all your routers? can you connect via tether to your phone?
what's the link for the apps? I may have some screwing around time this weekend and I see if I can find anything. hopefully you'll be fixed by then though, lol.
The wifi button won't turn on, to clarify it says it's turning on but can't deselect it or select. I can't see any routers. It is grayed out.

have you installed busybox from the market? i've used stericson's. it doesn't look like our root or recovery installs busybox.
also, do you know which specific darkhorse app kills wifi?
Not sure exacrly , i think it could be Google play store 4.4.22. I flashed TBO zip of the same version and no issues in the past.

Ended up re Odin mk1 then Odin twrp. Guess until I can find out why the app breaks wife or a work around I can't have the darkhorse apps on my note 10.1 2014 like I do on my note 3.
If anyone knows of a work around I'm all ears. I could get the apps to install it is the fact I need wife is the issue. I would think if we had the kernel alone to flash th a t may solve the issue, not sure.
