Should I buy the Galaxy Nexus? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys,
I am looking at getting a new phone and my requirements were:
1GB RAM
4.3+ inch screen
720p display.
The Galaxy Nexus caught my eye as it has all those things. I don't have a huge budget (£150, or €175, $225)But I am slightly concerned. Firstly because it is an old piece of kit. Now, that doesn't bother me if it performs well and gets the latest updates, but that's what I am worried about. Secondly because of Dev Support. I need a phone that will be supported for at least a year.
Please tell me what I should do. I am willing to buy a used device. If you think I should get something else, please let me know as to what device you are thinking.
Thanks!

Don't buy this phone.

Extend your budget go for a Nexus 4 or maybe wait for the next Nexus. Galaxy Nexus is a great phone but let's face it, it's been around for a while... And I doubt if it'll get official updates for the coming year

If you want it, then buy an extended battery with it and IMHO one should also buy the charging port flex board which may stop working anytime.
Whether or not it gets official updates, it will receive the custom ROMs. But then again why would you go for a 2 year old product?
Get the n4 or the n5 when it releases

Get the s4 or wait for new nexus at end of year.

Go for nexus 4.....though I'm not saying that Galaxy Nexus is not good, but it has now become somewhat old and won't get support from Google as Nexus 4 will get. Though you always will have support from the custom ROMs....but not stock ROM from Google itself.....so go for Nexus 4 rather than GN.

Screw n4 and its iphone-ish glass back

Okay, popular opinion suggests that the N4 is my choice. Is there anywhere I can pick it up within my budget?
Thanks!

The n4 is old as well, considering the new nexus will be out in a few months, the n4 has been a blunder from day one an forgotten about due to its terrible launch an unavailability, so people just decided to boycott it an skip it altogether, lg have even said themselves it wasn't on the list of priorities to get that phone out, I don't think google would bother asking lg a second time to make another nexus with that kind of poor effort or attitude.

So here I am.
I have been watching a load of videos comparing it to Samsung flagships, HTC flagships and some weird devices made by a fruit company. The hardware has EVERYTHING I want for my upgrade. Almost double every spec to my current phone. My only concern is updates. Does this device have 4.2.2 Officially? Will there be 4.3 and 5.0 for it unofficially, if not officially? I need it to last for a year.
If you can answer my questions, I will be extremely grateful. My other option is the Xperia S, but it costs too much, bigger camera then I need and no official 4.1
Thanks Again!

Android 4.2.2 is officialy suported on the galaxy nexus and 4.3 will normally be that too but for 5.0 nobody knows.
And yeah I love the phone and it's getting old but it is still a good phone

Do you know anywhere that would sell a used GNex at a low-ish price?

Not true, it has official 4.1.2 and unoffial, pure 4.2.2 AOSP (where everything but 1080p recording works).

Can anyone suggest:
An extended battery
A case (Gel Case, but hard and protective)
A screen protector
I would like these to be low cost and high quality. Thanks!

I bought mine a few months ago for exactly the same as your budget and I am more than happy with it yes it's old but not everyone can afford to get a nexus 4 and to be honest it's a bit to much like the iPhone with it's glass back the gnex gives you plenty of bang for your buck IMO
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 4 Beta

If you don't need the good cam, HDMI and so on, go for a GNex. As far as dev support's concerned there's no need to be worried, even the Google Nexus S (maybe the WFS too?) will get Android 5 (unofficially).

Advice needed: get a GNEX or wait

Hello, i am an xdanoob. I have been an iphone user for the last 2 years and i feel the time to upgrade and switch to android has finally come, i have always liked to tweak my stuff to get the most out of it ( i build my own PCs etc ) and i am tired of IOS lack of customization. I have read a whole lot on this forum and have narrowed my search to 2 phones, the GNEX and galaxy s3, other stuff like HTC etc is impossible to find in my country ( Argentina ) and even the gnex isn't sold officialy, so you have to get it via import. I also want to buy my cell phone unlocked since i don't want bloatware and carriers here take ages to update OS if they ever update it at all and they don't even sell the gnex...between the 2 phones i like the gnex most ( updates directly from google, no overlap UI, huge dev comunity etc ) and i have tried the s3 in stores and i just don't like how it feels. My only concern with the gnex is that it feels that im buying an outdated phone now that the quadcore era is approaching. Since i am spending big bucks on either phone ( no google play store here nor used at a reasonable price etc ) it will have to last at least 2 years. Should i buy the gnex now or wait till the new nexus and find a way to get my hands on one ( some1 travelling to the US, robbing a bank etc ) for reference unlocked phones here cost roughly 200% of US retail price, for ex: best price i found for a new sealed GNEX right now was 750 dollars.
I know all the info is already out there but i really need advice on this specific situation. Sry for my english and thanks in advance.
EDIT: i finally got it! it arrived today, love it.
another one of these threads and I may vomit
^ ^
Go ahead. I have read all the related threads and the general consensus seems to be: if you can get one really cheap buy one, otherwise wait for the next-gen nexus. <---- since this is not an option available to me i have started a new thread for my ( and i guess everyone living in this region ) specific issue.
But thanks for posting anyway.

Really? This is how we welcome new members? Not exactly a good way to keep a forum going.
To the OP: I think the current Nexus has great development and will continue to even after the next Nexus comes along (whenever that may be). I prefer a non-bloated, "clean slate" device as well, and the Nexus seems to deliver on that experience better than the S3 IMO.

Wait to see what the next Nexus will bring.
This will also lower the prices of the present Nexus by then.
Definitely do not buy one brand new right now. Just wait to see what the specs of the new one will be.
Use your IOS, you won't die if you keep using it for the next 1 ~ 2 months. =)

I agree with everything in the quote post. Welcome to xda. I had a nexus on vzw and switched to sprint. Got an evo 4g lte and selling it to go back to the gnex. I would agree that there will be deving for a long time on it just look at the older nexus phones and they all still have quite a bit of deving for them. No bloat and constant updates available by google means a smooth running phone and the best experience even stock.

And this is what I am doing. The GNexus a bargain now. So what if a new Nexus is coming, pick that up in a few months on the cheap as well. Just do not tie yourself into a contract.

You can get great deals on the gnex now. Wait if you want the latest and greatest, but you'll pay over twice as much. The gnex is a great phone, and there are already great roms and mods. A new nexus will take some time before developers have roms and mods. Just some things to consider.

I say: buy. It's such a nice device with A LOT of customization. In my honest opinion it is truly the most beautiful smartphone atm.
When you have an LG device or Samsung or any other than Galaxy Nexus series you will kinda get dissapointed when new devices come out, becuase of better specs, you know. Also it will take longer for software updates.
This is nice about the Nexus. When new devices come out you don't have to worry about your software walking behind, becuase you know you're always the first guy getting new software. And in that case hardware won't matter, at least not to me.
Hope this helped
I just got mine a couple weeks ago from Newegg , got the DOCOMO version unlocked. I first had it on Simple Mobile and would have said wait cause the phone sucks but after switching to AT&T go the phone works perfect and awesome signal and speeds. I'm happy as hell with this phone and development. I have never liked I phone or there software just me though lol feel there made for old people and people who do not know or care about customizing there phone. I also agree with most here about a asop experience. I have had a lot of android phones , HTC, Samsung and etc. And this is my first carrier unlocked and pure Google phone and I have to say I don't think I could ever own a non Google android phone again lol. For the $349 price on Google to me you can't beat this phone right now.

Sure the S3 is nice as hell but was a no brainer for me $600 + unlocked s3 or $350 unlocked nexus lol. As nice as the s3 looks and probably is. It isn't $300 + better lol. Believe me I looked and almost bought the s3 and I'm happy with my purchase.

get a gnex! I paid 440USD for a BRAND NEW one. bought it from amazon! its cheap for such a great phone! (its the best on the market, the s3 is just ****!)
But CM10 is not aosp. And things will not work as sweet as the GNexus. The S3 is great but not that great.

In order to get everything to work correctly on cm10, the devs need to "blindly" port over cm10 as the S3's stock os is not open source. Some files also are from the stock ROM and not cm/aosp so they will not work as well as the aosp ones from the gnex. There will always be bugs with the s3 cm, always.

I just purchased a Nexus from the Play Store yesterday and on the first of October I am getting a Red GS3 from AT&T just because that Red color looks so good and a 148.00 price tag from Sam's Club is not all that bad,as for the contract that is meaningless because I have been with AT&T long before the Cingular days long ago and do not plan on going to any other provider because contrary to popular belief AT&T has been a good fit for me and my wife!!! Had a HTC Vivid and all I can say is man what a crap phone!
WOW thanks for all the replies guys. i have decided to buy the gnex, i cant go wrong with a a nexus device after all hehe.
I am looking forward to learn a lot from xda

My Samsung Galaxy Nexus is on the way!
I can't wait, since this will be my first smart phone. Although I have had Android tablets for a couple of years and I have a Nexus 7 16GB (which I love) I have always had a simple phone (w/camera)
Since I enjoy the NEXUS experience, I wanted my first smart phone to be a Nexus.
I am new to this forum (but not to the XDA Forums) and I look forward to posting/commenting here too.
Thanks

GNex is a great choice... $50 vs $200 for practically the same thing. A slightly bigger screen, 2GB of RAM (which is totally unnecessary), Dual-Core (since it's from Verizon)... To me, GNex is the best deal on the market (or so it was, until the Nexus 4 came out - but lets not talk about that).
@OP
You made a fantastic choice. I love my GNex, like I said before. Trust me, your going to love it and have loads of fun toying around with it. First thing I did was Unlock the bootloader and start flashing. xD Not to mention your guaranteed future updates since it's a "Nexus" device.
Enjoy your work of art.

Had the Galaxy s3(i9300), traded for a Galaxy Nexus and I think this phone is Excellent and have potential!
I very recently upgraded from a HD2 to a Gnex. It feels like the very best thing I've done for a while! The Antutu scores are more than double also every JB rom I've tried runs fluid on this phone.
I did consider the Nexus 4 but to me the option of changing to a bigger extended 3500mah battery is important to me, so I got the Gnex. I use my phone as a GPS on my vehicle and my work involves me being away from a power source and just generally putting a lot of use on my phone.
If Nexus4 didn't have a sealed battery I would of bought it in a heartbeat.
in my country there is no playstore (portugal) and the nexus 4 will come out for 400-450 probably so i think the price of gnex is quite good
It's good. But nexus 4 will be better. Also i think that my gnex is lack of juice
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
in my honest opinion get the nexus 4 if possible but if not get the galaxy nexus , once you use a nexus you can't really look at other phones the same , S3 ,one x and all those phones are great but my friend's s3 seems so much laggier compared to my nexus which is a lot cheaper ,oh and the nexus gives insane bang for the buck but the if have a rather lackluster camera though =(

Galaxy Nexus Dual-Core Performance

Hey guys. I'm thinking about buying a new android phone. I have to chose between Galaxy Nexus, S2 and Htc SeNSATION.
I want to for Galaxy Nexus. but I'm wondering which will be the best for me.
I will use the phone mostly for gaming.
Which one should I choose ?? S2 has better performance for gaming but there is a big difference between it and GalaxyNexus, should I trade the little performance for the HD Display ?

Google would never abandon their baby. They're practically like a lioness, left the Nexus S to wander and grow on its own and will come back for it when KLP comes out. As for 5.0? Sammy and HTC can kiss updates goodbye, permanently. Those would probably never see the light of it.

Anyone who claims to have an answer to this is purely speculating. No one knows whether the GNex will see 5.0 or not. I hope yes... but after the Nexus One got abandoned, I'm not so sure the GNex will see 5.0
nexus s was abandoned already with android 4.1 (maybe because of 512 mb ram?)
so we already lucky to get 4.3
I don't have so much expectations to get 5.0..google is focusing a lot on nexus 4 / 7 / 10 ...our gnex is 2 years old, and the gpu is 3 years old, it's not slow, but useless to support..this is my thinking..we will see when 5.0 come out
Hey man, I'm interested in The Gnex, Do you think its still worth buying it? If so, i think youve got alot of knowledge, and im stuck with a galaxy Y, i want to change. Will the nexus be a good choice now? In Mid 2013? And if i get it, how long can it last with me being bored of it?

It was abandoned because 4.2 introduced the multi-user /0 folders. The Nexus S would need a full wipe (sd included) and they didn't want to push it out due to this. If it wasn't required to full wipe it during the OTA, it would've gotten it officially.

Why are you guys telling the OP that the Gnex will get 5.0? Nexus devices only have 2 years of support.
As far as Google support, the Galaxy Nexus will get 4.3.X and no further. It's up to the community to put 5.0 on it.

I finally dropped my beloved GN

I've had for almost two years, finally dropped it on tile floor. Yep, the screen cracked big time. It's a VZW phone, have had zero problems with it. Unlocked, rooted, my favorite ROM. The screen still worked, so had some time to explore options. Called around, going price to replace the screen was around $140. Didn't want to get new phone via new contract as I want to keep unlimited data. Started looking at other phones on ebay. Wife has a droid razr which I like, but don't like the non-replaceable battery, plus resale cost on droid razr is more like $200. As it turns out, GN on ebay is going for just a bit over $100. Took a chance, got a GN in near perfect condition for just over $100. Score, got another GN and my old GN is sitting the drawer as a backup. I know the GN is old and a bit tired, but I really like the phone.
this happened to me, 5 months ago
i brought a bad esn GN on craigslist and replace the screen myself
save me 15% on my car insurance lol

I only bought my GNex 2 months ago for $150.. Best thing I have ever done. I like the design over the Nexus 4 and we know that the Gnex will get KitKat and then CM will support it. I mean the original Galaxy S still is being updated by CM.

...While many way more powerful phones got stuck at official CM9/CM10. Popularity and SoC structure matters a lot. But yeah since GNex is so widely popular, it will get KitKat officially or unofficially and I don't care exactly how.

My GNex is bought days ago with screen cracked (at ~$60 it's still a nice deal), but here in China we have magical repair stations that replaces only the screen glass (they can do this for most Samsung phones) and costs merely ~$25. I will opt for this solution as soon as I have enough money. Too bad I've never heard of this available out of China.

Yeah. For example the Motorola Atrix. It was the world's most powerful phone. And it is stuck on Gingerbread. But it was what innovated Dual Core phones and 1GB of RAM.
The Galaxy Nexus will get it officially.. All nexus' have got 3 code names of Android but the Galaxy Nexus only has 2.

Very good point there. Plus, even the Nexus One gets decent, bugless unofficial 4.3 ROMs now. Unofficial releases should never be a problem. Let's see when will the 1st Nexus die unofficially...

Yeah. And the HD2. It's still rocking Android 4.3 ( and Sense 5?!) and it's not even an android phone!
Yeah. I used a Nexus S with 4.3 CM 10.2 and man. It was smooth. Not Galaxy Nexus/Nexus 4 smooth. But smooth none of the less. So I doubt the GNex will die anytime soon.
Why did you buy a Galaxy Nexus when you have a Nexus 4?

BECAUSE I'M CRAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZY!!! (Think Crazy Dave)
To be honest, I bought relatively legacy devices at real cheap prices not for calling/internet, but for flashing pleasures and special perks, usually determining the devices' uses: e.g. I get outstanding performance (at the purchase time) and QWERTY with an Epic 4G, so it had served as my main gaming device back then; and I get 16:9 screen with onscreen nav keys (a big must!) with a GNex, so I can play PPSSPP without black borders.

Why the 1st-gen Galaxy S? It's fading out of mainstream these days... I am abandoning my Epic 4G myself (it has same internals as Galaxy S)

Well really. I want to collect the whole Galaxy S line of phones. But the S is my favourite. Just really good to see that it is still supported and what not! I may ask this friend... don't want to pay to much for it... <$50 or less.. I'll see what he says... what phones have you got?

My signature lists all phones I currently own. Unlisted are either sold (G1, Milestone, etc.), exchanged (N9, Xiaomi MI-1S) or too obsolete (N900).
Galaxy S is also one of my favourites, I just don't think it's worthy of paying ~$80 for it today (the price here in China), especially when I can have a far superior and valuable GNex at an even lower price!

Did you not have insurance on your phone?? I learned a long time ago it's a must!!!

Haha I have an original galaxy s captivate sitting in my nightstand drawer. I wouldn't even pay 50 bucks these days for it. Soo underpowered.

It still can fly, you just haven't taken the time to prepare it for takeoff And I want a Captivate too.
Back on topic, no more legacy device trading...

Actually, I did. I decided for a couple of reasons not to use. One, there is the $100 deductible. Two, when I found them on ebay for roughly the same price, thought I take a chance and be able to keep the broken phone (which still works). Now I have a backup that I can also try out different ROM's before committing to my DD. I have since cancelled the insurance..
You could purchase a BAD ESN phone off eBay for less than $100 and switch out the parts. Its looks pretty hard to replace the actual glass, but the device looks relatively easy to take apart. Like a micro computer.

I looked at that option as well, watched a couple of youtube videos of it being done. Was not for me, I'm not that good at working with small parts. With my luck, I'd end up breaking the screen trying to replace it.
